YN measurment system

Postby Alinghi Federal-Democratic Republic » Sun Dec 09, 2018 6:47 am

Your nation use metric or a own measurment system.

If you use metric system, before it's impementation what system was used in your nation?

In Alinghi the metic system was introduced 1852 and became fully metric in the 1872 (these period of 20 years is called by historicians: "measurement transition period"). Before the metrication, Alinghi used the Alingan Costumary System (ACS):

Length

1 point = 0.25 mm (0.009842525 U.S. inches)
1 inch = 80 points = 2 cm (0.787402 U.S. inches)
1 foot = 13 inch = 26 cm (0.853018 U.S. feet)
1 mile = 2807 feet = 729.82 m or 0.72982 km (0.453489124 U.S. miles)

Weight

1 sand = 1.25 mg (0.000035274 ounces)
1 pitch = 4400 sands = 5.5g (0.0121254 lb or 0.194008 ounces)
1 pebble = 88 pitches = 484 g (1.06804 lb)
1 alingan tonnes = 1000 pebbles = 484 kg or 0.484 Mg (0.533519 Short Ton or 0.476356 Long Ton)

Capacity:

1 drop = 0.03 ml (0.006086526 U.S. teaspoon)
1 teaspoon = 150 drops = 4.5 ml (0.912979 U.S. teaspoon)
1 glass = 61 teaspoons = 274.5 ml or 0.2745 l (1.14375 U.S. cup or 9.2819492 fluid ounces)
1 jar = 44 glasses = 12.078 l (25.5253604 U.S. pints or 3.19067005 U.S. gallons)

The old system was taught pratically for only historic purpose in the primary school math's lessons, are taught expecially the convertions to/from metric by/into ACS.
Either in formal or in colloqual/informal form, the alingan population use the metric system. In the road signs, in the weight of product, etc... are shown only in metrics.

The metric system has been the sole legal system of measurements in Gandoor since the passage of the Metric Act 1952. The Metric Act ended a period of metrication that began in 1935.

Prior to the adoption of the metric system, the measurement system used in Gandoor was the Gandoorese Standard Units, which were derived from the English customary units and had been, since 1841, identical to the imperial units used in the British Empire.

During the period of metrication, both the Gandoorese Standard Units and the metric system were legal systems of measurement, although with an explicitly states goal of the replacement of the old units with metric units by 1965. Most research and studies indicate that Gandoor had been fully metricized by 1948, it would not be until 1952 that the legal recognition of the GSU as a system of measurement would cease.

Great Nortend uses Queen Catherine's Weights and Measures which were codified in the Statutum Catarinæ de Mensurara et Pondere (Statute of Catherine on Weights and Measures) in 1799 during the reign of Queen Catherine the First, commonly known as Catherine of Hall. The most recent addition of the system was in 1999, when new electromagnetic units were formally added with the passage of the Statute of Catherine the Second on Weights and Measures by Queen Catherine the Second. Only the units prescribed below are technically legal for trade purposes, as well as a number of additional units established through orders-in-council not listed, such as cords, sacks, tods, tubs, weys, candlepower, however the use of customary measurements such as the surplace, the finger, the load and the last are still used informally.

Temperature:
Degrees Marsdon (°M): Freezing point of alcohol is -200°M whilst the boiling point of alcohol is 200°M. Originally defined as 0 being the same as 0°F, being a solution of equal portions ice, water and ammonium chloride, and 200 being the boiling point of alcohol. The boiling point of water is approximately 245°M (244·95°M).

Electrical units:
The base electrical unit is that of charge which is defined as the charge where two such charges placed one yard apart would have an electrostatic force of one pound-force between them, which is obtained through Coulomb's law where the prefactor or Coulomb's constant is 1. The unit of charge thus has the units of (yd.(lb)^(1/2)). The unit of potential energy or voltage is defined as one pound-yard by one yard-pound-root or symbolically, (yd.lbf)/(yd.(lb)^(1/2)). This is too large a unit for typical use, and so the Fitzon, a unit named after Lord Fitzon, a prominent natural physicist in the 20th century, is defined as 1/100,000 of this value.

Metric equivalents may be calculated using the equivalence of 1 grain = 64·171 milligrammes or 1 inch = 24·88 millimetres. One ounce is the weight of one fluid ounce of water and at standard pressure and temperature, has a volume of 2 cubic inches (1·2599 cubic inches), which is also the volume of one solid ounce. The approximate conversion from degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Marsdon is °M = °F×1·16. One Fitzon is approximately equivalent to 1·8V (1·80524V).

International System of Units (SI). But outside of scientists and engineers, very few people are familiar with them. This is because our economy and society is quite primitive, and most people are hunter-gatherers or peasants with little need for math. And also, not all SI units are used. Volts and watts are unnecessary when all you've got is steam.

The Equestrian measurement system is, by our own admission, a hopelessly complex and antiquated mish-mash of differing units of measurement devised by Earth pony farmers, Pegasus meteorologists, and Unicorn astronomers from ancient times. However, ponies being hidebound traditionalists, we've never been able to agree on a common set, much less simplify it with metrics. Somehow, we manage to muddle along.

The Mangahhan Super Region uses both SI Units( Système international (d'unités)), Imperial and English units, in 1986. The government wanted to change the units from Imperial to SI, yet theyve implemented to use those 3 measurement systems instead.
Learning all the 3 measurement systems used is part of the nation's educational curriculum.

The metric system has been the only measurement system used in Aikoland since our founding in 1995.

Our predecessor states of Japan, Korea, and Taiwan used Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese traditional units prior to their metrication from the 1920s to the 1980s.

Knessniet uses the US customary system, as they adopted them when Britain still used the same units, and like the US they didn't change them afterwards. An interesting thing to note is that Knessniet uses the Troy system of weights, like the precious metal industry that the country is known for.

Before the adoption of those units, Knessians just used a simple alternative. They used Roman measurements until the British system came to be useful in trade.

SI (metric) system is the only system of weights and measures permitted in Brystolville. Use of Imperial or US Customary units in government, science, education, and business is banned, as is international trade with any country still using US measurements.

As a British colony, Brystolville was forced to adopt the Imperial system of weights and measures in 1824. Adoption of the metric system was one of the very first reforms implemented by the Labour Party in 1958 with the Weights & Measures (Metrication) Act of 1958.

It is still common (especially in rural areas and among less-educated people) to use obsolete units like feet, miles, stone, pints, etc. in informal contexts. This is illegal under the Weights & Measures (Abolition of Noncompliant Units) Act of 1975, and is punishable by three days to one week in jail and a £25-£100 fine. However, such cases are rarely prosecuted.

Primarily the metric system. However, the British imperial system is also used, especially in the food and beverage industries, as well as in the railways. Metric equivalents are required to be given equal importance in public use of Imperial measurements.

Prior to the 1970s, the Christian Republic used the torgovye system, based off the common system of measurement used across the states that preceded Luziyca.

Since the 1970s, we have largely metricated, though we still use torgovye units for weight (for example, we say that a typical newborn weighs 7.9 funts), or for cooking (5 chast of flour). As well, many standards, such as our 1,422 mm rail gauge (2 arshin gauge), are based off of the torgovye system.

In 1841 Thermodolia adopted the metric system as its sole measurement system after the Standardization of Measurements Act of 1841 passed. This followed the period of forced metrication imposed by the government a year earlier.

Previously Thermodolia had several different systems. From 1233 the Thermodolian Unified Measures came to be. This would be a standardization of several previous system which where in use. In 1510 private measurement systems where allowed to be used alongside the Thermodolian Unified Measures System.

In 1755 following the Nationalization of Measurements Act the private measurement systems where forbidden and all but three systems where discarded. A year later in 1756 the Standardization of Measurements Act of 1756 passed creating the Thermodolian Standard System. This system was based off of the Chinese System, the older Thermodolian system, and two of the three private systems.

A private system of measurements, the Fárath System, would continue use until 1838 when the government forbade its use.

Ænglland's customary system:
1 inc = 25.4mm
1 fūt = 12 inces = 304.8mm
1 yard = 3 fūtes = 914.4mm
1 cein = 22 yards = 20.1168m (not used regularly)
1 firlong = 10 ceins = 201.168m (not used regularly)
1 miel = 8 firlonges = 1760 yards = 1609.344m

base 16 'metric'. because cameroi (like all lananarans) are born with 8 digits on each forepaw.

16 hexichrons to the day, 16 heximeters to the kiloheximeter, that sort of thing, though the terms in their own language more and completely natural in it.

16 drops to the sip, 16 sips to the cup, 16 cups to the glugalion.

prefix mini = 1/16th, micro=1/16/16, nano = 1/16/16/16 and so on

The official standard of measurement in Endrie is the metric system. Other standards of measurement may be used - and they are, throughout the country, based on a variety of different customary measures from many different cultures. However, all establishments using customary measures must clearly display how those measures relate to the metric standard.

We use the SI/metric system; however, we have a local customary set of measurements based off the weight of cubic centimeters of gold dust. These customary units are popular in rural areas due to the imprecise nature allowing greater variance in constitution of weight definition as well as difficulty to dispute accuracy of said variance.

1 Ini = 1 cm3 of gold dust
Unti = 7 cm3 of gold dust
Onti = 15 cm3 of gold dust
Dlenti = 30 cm3 of gold dust
