Tumblr Bans All Adult Content by December 17th

There are more communities on Tumblr than porn, and they haven't nuked "most" of the community.

Hosting child porn is a legal nightmare (and should be) and thus the staff is protecting Tumblr as a whole. Anyone who can't get along without their porn GIFs can find more suitable places -- like porn sites.

The problem is that tumblr was an accessible place for it
Artists and models could easily post content and gain feedback on the platform, all while being easy to consume

Yeah, I know. I've had an account there (a non-porn one) for about six or seven years.

What it really needs is better tagging and better ways to search for really bad content.

But... we'll see. It's not likely to affect the RPs I do there, or the fanfic, or the videogaming stuff, or the Sander Sides, or.....

Honestly, Tumblr is a very silly place, but that's kind of why I love it.

Back when I was semi-active in it, you could get a dashboard full of cutesy drawings with wholesome messages, beautiful photos of envy-inducing bookcase-bunk-bed hybrids, a very LGBT+ friendly sex ed blog, a former gay pornstar and gamer mid-transition who posted a bunch of Dark Souls porn...

i suppose the problem is the question of what is consent and what isn't.

but also, the mood swings of political culture.

of course you know, any envelope, someone, lots of someones, are going to try pushing those edges.

trying to hold someone accountable for what someone else does is a bit of contrary logic too.

if they've taken a suicidal course by taking what is the only safe course for themselves, it isn't them that i entirely blame.

nor is most of what is concidered 'adult content' any particularly great loss.

but then again, most of the great works of art, and a good many mostly innocent ones, can also be construed as 'adult content'.

rather then getting bitter and whinning about it, the thing is, culture is the statistical sum of all of us, sooooo ...

The other thing is, apparently, its automoderation is completely ineffective and incompetent. People (myself included, admittedly), have complained about some moderation decisions here, but apparently, on Tumblr, the bot mods are even worse, falsely flagging things that are supposed to be kosher (even the staff's own post about the new policy change).

Or the other perfectly fine and good posts that obviously are not porn.

And, apparently, unlike with human mods, there's no way to appeal a bad ruling.



So, yeah. There's absolutely no reason to feel optimistic about the future of Tumblr.
