Man, what is it with these platforms that end up very heavily used by fandom deciding to... well, alienate fandom? LiveJournal pissed off fandom back in like 2007, LiveJournal has long since ceased to be relevant. Quizilla pretty much flipped fandom the bird and killed an entire genre of fanfiction, it's now completely gone. Somehow I don't see Tumblr's outcome being much different with this knee-jerk reaction, especially as large chunks of fandom communities I casually keep an eye on are already preparing to relocate en masse to other sites.

Is it their choice as a private entity? Sure. Doesn't mean it's a particularly smart choice. They're using a chainsaw to fix a problem that needs a scalpel. If the issue that got their app pulled from the Apple store was a child porn incident, there are better ways to resolve that than simply "NO MORE NSFW!" From what I've heard from friends who use it, the net flagging content is stupidly broad and is just going to end up culling a lot of not-actually-porn content. And I have not heard anything good about their flagging or appeal systems; the best I've heard was pretty much "Well, it's better than Facebook's flagging/appeal system-?" which is pretty much damning with faint praise.

All porn websites that allow users to upload pictures, videos, etc. have this problem. But legally speaking, a piece of CP is a grave and serious, serious crime. It has to be taken down as soon as possible, that sort of content can sink an entire website.

If Tumblr want to just be an image hosting website, they could be deciding that allowing for adult content is too much hassle and overhead for them to continue allowing anymore. Not every website owner or company is going to be best equipped to do age verification and aggressively ensure 18 USC 2257 compliance to the best if their ability. Its sad that it has come to this but its understandable if too many people abused the services they were given by this platform.

Newgrounds built itself on Adobe Flash but migrated to HTML5. It is a legacy website in some ways, but it still has room for current or new content. Tom Fulp built something he can be proud of. Forever a piece of internet history that many millions of people enjoyed at one point or another.

Many people believe this is due in part because of their "pornbots" not dealing with the pedophile ring properly. Many users are comparing this to MySpace and it's irrelevancy. It brings up the topic of companies censoring their platforms and a new wave of progressive-ness in social media.
