In the interests of the research and analysis of the political situations of the nations of the world, the World Democracy Index was established by the Political Research Institute of the World Financial Company to analyse nations by various criteria to determine levels of democratic freedoms. Nations are assessed on bases including but not limited to the ability for citizens to participate in government through voting and running in free and fair elections, the extent to which executive and legislative authority are dependent upon freely elected officials bound by regular election cycles and terms limits, and the accountability and separation of powers of the organs of government.
The World Democracy Index II was developed in response to the success of the first WDI, which has classified over a hundred sovereign states. It was developed to address some of the flaws of the original and its formula, so that a nation’s score could be more accurately calculated.
