North Argus Slave Trade (TWI Only)

Postby Athara Magarat » Mon Oct 29, 2018 7:05 pm

From 14th to 18th Century; many nations of the Isles were involved in the North Argus Slave Trade.

With the arrival of members of the Portuguese bourgeoisie and nobility in the Captaincy of Aldeota, there happened a lack of manpower to execute the manual labors that neither the high and the middle classes wanted to do. To solve this problem, the government of the colony partnered with the Empire of Noronica to buy its slaves. The most part was composed by poor people from Arván and Dormill and Stiura, who were catch by the Sunuwar Hangate on monthly raids and sent to the Noronicans who would in sell some of them to the most wealthy land owners of Aldeota, mainly to work in farms and mines.

- From the history factbook of Dragao do Mar

Nations such as Aldeota, Noronica and the hangates of "AM" demanded slaves to work on their plantations. Sunuwar Hangate in northern Gael were the guys to go for that. They would launch monthly raids into what is now Dormill and Stiura, Michigonia and other mainland Gael nations just to catch slaves.

Then there were certain nations who had abolished slavery and hunted down ships carrying these slaves. There were those like Pirate Queen Hema Ghotane, who would board these ships to steal all the loot including slaves. Ghotane's group would either enlist these people into their pirates or sell them to highest bidder depending on mood.

So...what did your nation do while North Argus Slave Trade was a thing?

This comes from my draft of Totzkan history covering our relationship to the Slave Trade. It takes place during a period known as the Feudo do Nobre (Noble's Feud) between the old aristocracy and the new class of the Portuguese landowners

The settlement of the Jhoufou deal led to Portuguse landowners expanding outside their traditional lands around São Tiago and into Rio de Ouro’s interior as they rapidly purchased land that had been mortgaged following the collapse of food prices in 1776. To work this land tens of thousands of slaves were transported from Portugal’s colonies in Angola and Mozambique en mass to Rio de Ouro. In order to remain competitive many Suhaans began to replace their tenant farmers with the free labour providing slaves. Other Suhaans simply forced their subjects to sell them their produce at a reduced price to compete. Among the peasantry resentment began to grow as many agricultural workers, facing poverty, chose to move to the cities to seek work among the dockyards or as construction workers. Like many cities, São Tiago faced a wave of unemployment, crime and prostitution as vast slums began to grow on the edges of the city. In 1782 Sebastião José sent soldiers into the largest of these slums in an attempt to destroy it. The ensuing riot and violence gripped the city for weeks as many wealthy foreign investors retreated to their homeland.

A crackdown in law and order by the Saaya and the Viceregal military didn’t little stem the anger felt by the Totzkan poor. In the summer of 1784 the first so called ‘Slave riots’ broke out as bands of Totzkan peasants, possibly armed by discontent Suhaans, raided slave utilising farms and began to slaughter the workers, burning down slave pens and having their inhabitants shot. Those slaves that managed to escape the massacres were often recaptured by their former owners and hung for absconding. Over three quarters of the 27,000 slaves brought to Rio de Ouro are thought to have been killed between 1784-1790. Initially landowners began to employ armies of European mercenaries to protect their farms. In 1787 one Portuguese aristocrat, Dom João Carlos de Bragança, publicly accused a neighbouring Suhaan, SãoGrace Aslambro Illo, of sending professional soldiers to raid his lands. In retaliation Bragança had his own mercenaries occupy settlements belonging to Illo, which resulted in a short fight with the local garrisons and militias of these towns. This was one of the rare instances that the Portuguese and Totzkan nobility engage in in combat with one another and is generally considered to be the climax of the Feudo do Nobre.

I like what the details here but we need more details on how this ties into the slave trade going in North Argus/rest of the Isles.

You see, our goal is to create Isles self-sufficiency. Threads like this (stand-in for trans-Atlantic/sub-Saharan slave trade in minor scale), Khas-Kirati invasions (Viking/Mongol-style invasions), Great Argus Wars (Napoleonic Wars), Great Gael War (First World War), Impetial War (Second World War), etc are to ensure that we use lesser and lesser real-world stuff and move towards TWI stuff.

Sorry if I came hard on you. Hope you understand what I am saying :)

This is why its just a draft I have on my PC and not an actual factbook yet. I want to integrate my history more with the region anyway. I'm fine switching from Africans to impoverish Gaeltics or Totzka could also become a historical exporter of slaves?

Cool :)

The North Argus slaves were mostly Kaelectians (from Dormill and Stiura and Ariua) and Michigume natives (Michigonia). There were others; mostly poor folks.

Of course! This is what the thread's about. Glad to sell you some slaves, sir.

Speaking of Kaelectians, I’ve been making strides to remake them, so expect some name changes or something else from me.

Aside that, I wonder how things’ll go with the slave trade of these people since they’re pasty white (mostly anyways)

I think they could be like how Western Europeans, North Africans, Ottomans, European khanates (Crimea, Nogai), etc had Slavic slaves.

IMO; a person's color doesn't change the fact that they can be enrolled into slavery. (Maybe this comes from a naive Nepali point of view where notions of "black" or "white" people don't exist.)
