Fletcher with a borrowed Stoner 63 [1970]

Biography:
Rainier Fletcher, often refereed to simply as Fletch or Finn by his parents, was born in 1945 to World War Two veteran Irwyn Fletcher and his wife Maria Fischer, and immigrant from Germany who had come to America as a student before the war and had stayed once it begun, in a small neighborhood just outside of Anchorage Alaska. Fletch's early childhood was largely full of rummaging around the woods of his childhood, as his neighborhood was quite far from the down town area of Anchorage, and thus separated largely from the vast majority of people and requiring a fifteen mile trek from home to the docks for works each day. As a child Fletch grew up very independently, despite being an only child, his mother having been very sickly since his birth [eventually dying in 1964 due to an Earthquake] and his Father often going away for long periods of time on fishing trips. As such Fletcher largely grew up learning everything first hand, and getting a majority of his education on life and in general in a self taught manner, as his family was subtly sacrilegious and thus most concepts on life were left up to the formulating of young Fletcher. However, some boons of his independence were a naturally independent if slightly uncaring attitude from the young boy and even at a young age was noted to be very mellow in nature if slightly aloof, and often got sever scolding for spacing out, yet he was never considered a terrible student by any measure and carried his own weight when it was needed.

Even after his father's death at sea on his first day of high school, he took the news surprisingly well, seemingly unphased by the incident at least from what others could note, but in reality it likely hit him quite hard as he skipped several days of school afterwards and simply camped out for the first week of school. Upon returning he was more or less his normal mellow self, though noticeable a bit more laid back than usual, though he was never known to be much of an uptight person. And despite his outwardly dislike towards small talk towards strangers, he managed to secure himself the position as a Captain on a local Rugby Team before he graduated high school, due in part to his assertiveness. His high school life since Freshman Year was largely uneventful, yet the one thing that stuck out was the old journal of his father's he found not long after his death. It held many of the stories he had heard before and upon finishing it decided he would enlist. He had little other aims, and since joining the great fishing boats was out of the question he elected to enlist much like his father had done nearly twenty years earlier, hearing much the same call to join as his father had upon hearing the stories of his father. Not ones of glory, but of adventure and camaraderie like none other in the world.

Upon enlisting he found himself relatively at home in the military. Work was hard, but he was used to work and work in the freezing temperatures of the Alaskan winters was one that you learned quickly to accepted when the fridge temperatures haunted you at every step one would take outside his home. Though early on in training he suffered a bout of heat exhaustion very early, and though he did not complain about it, his Sergeant and fellow bunk-mates were quick to chime in and upon learning of his origins fitted him with the name of Eskimo and often joked that he was quite a bit far from home for a snowman, which was in some ways true. The blistering Heat aside he passed through training relatively easily, finishing towards the upper middle of his class, excelling at many of the land navigation excersizes, his natural sense of direction and sharps eyes allow for him to assess the terrain and come up with cunning movements, and in 1964 officially graduated from Basic as an Infantryman and was sent over to the 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry, 9th Division in New Jersey where the slightly cooler temperature allowed for easier life style during peacetime. However, in 1966 with the Vietnam War now a year under way, his Battalion was deployed along with her sisters in country to serve in the war. By this time Fletch had achieved the rank of Corporal and went over as a fire team leader. Once in-country Fletcher began to show his true colors, and the largely gravely voiced boy who spoke few words that were not orders or stories made his skills known, having a naturally assertive personality and a seemingly grave lack of self-preservation or fear, a skill perhaps honed during his many years playing Rugby. Nonetheless, his accomplishments and by 1968 had already achieved the rank of Sergeant, and upon volunteering for the newly announced Sniper School, was among one of the few many picked from his Battalion and many others like it. Upon Graduating from the School, officially refereed to as AMU, he had little time to try out his new skills before he was shuffled over to prepare for a massive operation of which he would be taking part. In the Delta during this operation would be his first chance to prove himself as one of the Army's newest snipers and impress he did as by the end of the Operation the following year he had already confirmed a total of seventeen kills, six of which were conducted during night operations, which he thoroughly was reported to have enjoyed much more than the day operations that required him to sit in the often hot sun for hours upon a time, despite the fact a vast majority of his kills came from such operations. Though the crowning moment would come later in 1969 after setting off on a two day hike for an enemy logisitics trail. Positioned out among one of the many brush paths used by the VC for logistics he came across a unit about two platoons moving through one of the many trails. Cut off and without a radio, the young Sergeant of twenty-three elected to tail the group for a total of four days, picking off targets from the bush, laying traps from their own munitions, and interrupting their travels where ever he could, and largely living off the scraps picked off the enemies corpses, often forcing him to back track several miles during the times the enemy would rest. By the time the four day trip was over, Sergeant Fletcher Wandered into Company headquarters, his uniform more mud than cloth, all of his ammo exhausted including that of his pistol, and upon being asked where he had been was reported to have simply replied, "I don't know, but I don't think I'll ever eat rice again." in a manner of dry humor that was typical for the man's quick retorts. For his action which resulted in the deaths of a confirmed twelve enemy soldiers, though he personally estimated he directly or indirectly killed several more, earned him recognition in the form of the Distinguished Service Cross.

For the next three years until the GATE incident, Sergeant Fletcher, until a promotion a few months later landed him the rank of Staff Sergeant, spent it largely engaging on a number of operation in the same areas that the 4th battalion had been assigned to, tallying up an additional sixteen confirmed kills and a great dozen more unconfirmed before being rotated back home, just in time for the GATE incident, and while originally stationed in New Jersey during this time, upon the outbreak in Kansas, his unit was quickly rushed to the sight of the GATE and was instructed to join in with the fighting already happening 'across the way' as it was being refereed to, the term Unknown Region [UZ] not emerging until the aftermath. It was during this initial fighting in the first two days that he gained an additional twelve Confirmed kills, and countless unconfirmed, simply due to the nature of the fighting. Now with the fighting dying down around the FOB being established on the other side, and with nearly 57 confirmed kills combined on both sides of the breach, he has volunteered to join the 97th Mech for a scouting mission across the Breach...

Personality: Will be better developed ICly, but...Fletcher is a seemingly relaxed and carefree man, despite being somewhat mellow, even in the face of combat. Though outwardly distant towards others and perhaps even to be considered cold due to his blunt nature at first, he finds immense pleasure when among his own men, laughing and spending time with them as if they were family, giving off a steadfast and solid, yet warm aura that refuses to allow you to leave once you get involved with him on a personal level.

Finley Baker | CPL | 25C (Radio Operator)
Age|Height|Weight:
21 | 5’4” | 150 lbs
D.O.B|Birthplace|Nationality
3rd March, 1950 | Lippitt, Rhode Island | American
Sex|Sexuality:
Male | Heterosexual
Appearance Image & Description:
Standing at a shorter height than most, Finley’s large as hell forehead, kept brown hair, and rather voluminous moustache has earned him a place in ‘people who look most out of time’. Strictly speaking within regulations, of course. His musculature is thin and not at all outrageous, though most certainly is enough for the pack the man has. His eyes are really quite calm, the color of a New England forest. In terms of scars, Finley has two located at the bottom-half of his chest, one between the left 8th and 7th false rib and the other between the 7th and 6th false rib, also left side. A burn scar can also be noted on his right arm, small and overall only along the outer forearm. In terms of clothing not considered issued, Finley has a brown scarf, woolen, and two sets of seaweed green socks, never worn. A light coating of cat hair can be noted on said scarf, at nearly all times.
Biography:
Born in Lippitt, RI, a tiny little region technically called a ‘village’ by anyone with a sense of scale, Finley’s life growing up was one that might be considered normal for the vast majority of Americans. He played football, went to high school, did his sports, listened to the radio, things of that nature. His father worked in the fishing industry, an injury from the war preventing his return into the service, and for the longest time he watched the Seniors from high school go off, go off to enlist and off to war. The Vietnam War, by the time he was a Freshman, had been going on for nine years, nine long years, and there were times he heard of it over the radio. There were times where the protests were heard, one thing or another, and his father would always shake his head, rustle the newspaper, and say, “wouldn’t be saying that if this were Russia.” The man had avowed anti-Communist beliefs, a strong supporter of the McCarthy reign.

When he hit seventeen, with the permission of his parents, Finley would enlist in the Army as a Radio Operator. This was, of course, under the initial assumption that he would be operating a radio somewhere a good bit farther behind the lines, in a firebase, or even in Saigon, and that assumption was rapidly dispersed with the training he received. Rifle training, in addition to this, was given to the young man, as was the great joys of being cool and collected under fire, and after just a few weeks he was shipped-off to the jungles. Since that point, he’s dodged the majority of bullets shot at him, receiving two wounds during the Tet Offensive in the defense of Saigon.

On rotation back in the states, the Battle of Emporia occurred and Finley was rushed back. Since that point, he has fought well in the new jungles of the odd world, albeit with little overall distinction in comparison to the more gung ho soldiers.
Personality:
As caring an individual as one would likely find in the Vietnam jungles, Finley is quite choosy between what he does care for and what he does not. The sociopathic behavior he does have is largely directed towards those people with which he does not have a personal relation with, those people not in the US military or a US citizen, and those people who are not allies. As such, the disconnect he does have in relation towards the treatment of enemies, enemy prisoners, and enemy-aligned civilian combatants can come across as incredibly inhumane. This stated, his care and compassion towards animal life is considered above normal, as there is a noted instance of his adoption of a stray cat in 1968, which he still has with him. Finley’s style of humor can be considered deadpan, something not out of the ordinary for such a soldier. In terms of religion Finley has lost the vast majority of his dedication over the years, the belief that ‘god is dead’ being a keystone.

Ormata wrote:I tag. Do we have grid coordinates laid-out or am I going to have to do bearing/range for calling-down artillery?

No Grid coordinates, just bearing and range, but even that's limited in the application of artillery as the recon mission is set to move out to 400 miles beyond Hill 001, approximately 375 miles past the known maximum firing range of the M107 SPG. What will primarily come into use is rotating helicopter gunships flying on set paths along the 24 different directions the various recon platoons and teams are moving. You'll learn more in the briefing being made.

SSG Fletcher is hereby reassigned to the 97th Mechanized Infantry Battalion and placed within the Special Reconnaissance Platoon as Section Leader.

Only thing I'll have you fix are getting rid of the second Personality tag, as you explain it before the biography and the renaming of the Special Region to the Unknown Zone (this is just a thing being done to make it all that much more independent of original lore, in spite of how canonical most of this information will be).

Additionally, I'm currently working on the OP to the IC and that should be up in about an hour, depending on how often I get interrupted trying to write it. Apologies for also not updating the OP last night, I got caught up in some work-related issues that needed to be resolved. Everyone who has been accepted will be edited in after I finish the IC OP.

Truth be told, when I was reviewing my app, I couldn't find the old personality tag for the life of me, and so I made a new one. But that and the other error have been fixed as of now.

Also, don't worry about. Life can be a pain in the ass. Personally I'm being berated with mid-final-testing crap, so that's sapping a lot of my time and focus. Can't wait to the see the IC OP though.

No worries, I'm just finishing up the IC now. Not throwing you all immediately into the swing of things, given how we could do with a few more people, but other than that, I think we're just about ready to get started.

Name|Rank|Role: Andrzej 'Andrew' Wojciechowski|Sergeant|11B

D.O.B|Birthplace|Nationality:7th August 1947|Pittsburgh, PA|American

Sex|Sexuality:Male|Heterosexual

Appearance Image & Description:
Image

Biography: Andrzej was born in Pittsburgh, to Maciej and Beata Wojciechowski, a family of Polish immigrants. His parents were from Gdynia and barely escaped with their lives after the German invasion and moved to the UK. They initially intended to return after the war, however after seeing the rise of communism in Eastern Europe they moved to start a new life in the United States.

Andrzej was quite average as a child, doing okay in school, partaking in community activities and clubs. Not much was expected of him, and he didn't expect much of himself too. His father had set up a small shop that eventually grew to have a few other small locations in the Pittsburgh area and Andrzej was supposed to help out with the business after school. That's what his life was supposed to be. That all changed in 1965.

America entering the Vietnam War provided Andrzej with an opportunity. Since before he really understood what they were talking about, his parents kept telling him about how communism had destroyed Poland. Not that they were the only ones. The majority, if not all, of Pittsburgh's Polish community possessed a deep a hatred of the USSR and its evil ideology, instilling that same sentiment within him. He saw the South Vietnamese as akin to the Poles in that they both despised communism and believed that if he fought in Vietnam he would be doing his part to liberate the fatherland that he had never known.

The same day that he received his high school diploma, Andrzej signed up for the military. He was first deployed in Vietnam in 1966, to see that frontline combat was not as it had seemed, though he didn't let that stop him. He counted every kill as one less communist imprisoning Poland. He quickly found his place as a automatic rifleman, finding peace by becoming closely knit with the rest of his unit.

Unfortunately, in 1970, Andrzej's unit was ambushed. Only he and one other soldier survived but surely would not have were it not for reinforcements. Andrzej was sent back to America for temporary leave due to an injury acquired during the ambush. As he was getting ready to be deployed once again, he was informed of his deployments cancellation. His heart sank, as he simply couldn't adjust to the pettiness and unimportance of civilian life. That is, until he learnt why.

Personality: Andrzej tends to be rather laid back, joking and fooling around, though this behaviour does not continue during situations of great importance. He is fiercely loyal, having disobeyed orders multiple times in order to save the lives of his fellow soldiers, which creates some distrust between him and his superiors.

Well, so far we've got a Sniper and a Gunner as far as specialized weapons go [and possibly an M67 gunner], so a medic or Grenadier [M203 or Thumper] would be nice, but go with whatever you feel is best. Also, the OP said that there's no diplomats at this stage in the operation for the moment

We do already have a medic, so best to strike that off.

Staff Sergeant Fletcher, though a Squad Leader can very easily double as a Marksman. Filling up another slot like a Grenadier might be more helpful at current. I'd also offer M67 Gunner, but I think we either have someone accepted for that role, or already have someone working on an app for it. But go with what you feel as best, OP will point you in the right direction if need be

Do we have a machine gunner already? That might be useful here.

We have someone carrying a Stoner 63 which can be configured to be a Light Machine gun, but a dedicated Machine Gunner would actually be quite useful.

What about designated marksmen?

Name|Rank|Role: Eduardo Mäkinen|Cpl.| Designated Marksman

Age|Height|Weight: 24|5'8"|160 lbs.

D.O.B|Birthplace|Nationality 1947| Chengwatana Township, Minnesota| American

Sex|Sexuality: Male| Heterosexual

Appearance Image & Description:
Image

Biography:
Biography: Mäkinen was born in a small township called Chengwatana. His parents were both immigrants, his mother from Mexico and his father from Finland. His father was a sniper in the FInnish military. He fought in the Winter War against the soviets and moved to the US once it became apparent that WW2 would expand to FInland.

Mäkinen lived in the forest with his family. The small township didn’t supply things that they needed and the closest store was far away. So they had to get things such as food by themselves. At an early age, Mäkinen’s father taught him how to hunt. He taught him how to use a gun properly and helped him hone his accuracy with a rifle. Soon enough Mäkinen was able to hunt by himself and would become the sole hunter in his family once his father became too old.

Mäkinen was homeschooled by his mother until a highschool opened near his township. This provided him with a new opportunity and he was enrolled the following week. He quickly learned and held onto subjects much better than many students in his class. Yet there was one thing that he enjoyed the most in school. A photography class opened up at his school and he soon took on a new task. His photos were remarkable. Mäkinen was amazingly accurate with a camera just as much as he was with a gun. He took pictures at the perfect moment, never missing the perfect shot.

Soon enough the Vietnam War started and Mäkinen was drafted like many others. His plans to be a photographer were ruined but his love for it didn’t. His marksmanship provided him an easy route to becoming a designated marksman. Due to his early deployment in the war, he was given an M1 Garand sniper variant instead of a M14. He didn’t mind much and he actually enjoyed using the relic of a gun. Mäkinen had over 40 confirmed kills during his deployment, taking the perfect shot at his target, whether it be with a gun or camera.

Personality: He likes to keep to himself when he's off duty. Living in the forest and spending a lot of time hunting with his father has shaped him to be very serious unless he's around people he's close with. Tries to put off a serious character but when broken it's hard for him to hide fun and open side.

I like it, CPL Mac is accepted into the 97th MECH INF Recon Platoon

But with now two potential sharpshooters, I'm going to close out that role to further applications. I'm going to request we get some scouts and RTOs set up for the Sections as well.

But wasn't there a medic right now, Everson Daniels? Granted, we can never have too many medics...
So I guess I'm the man who makes things go "boom". Probably rocking the M203 with an...M16? I assume for simplicity's sake we're all repping the same kit.

We can double up on roles, but I would like to have a broad variety of people first. Most kit though will be quite similar.

Since the only thing we have close to a Grenadier right now is some 22mm rifle grenades, a dedicated Grenadier with a M203+M16A1 combo would be more than welcome, I'm sure
