Is it ok to wear apparel from a College you didn't Attend?

Postby San Lumen » Sun Oct 28, 2018 10:19 pm

I recently went to Boston and bought a Harvard baseball cap very similar to what a student attending Harvard would wear. I thought it would be a great souvenir to bring back from my trip.

I have heard the argument made its inappropriate to wear appeal from a school you didn't go to as it somehow is a insult to those who actually attended and is pretentious. I have also heard its duping people into thinking you are attending or did attend.

I don't see the issue with it though it might depend on the school. Harvard or Stanford is a world renowned institution held in high esteem the world over. It shows you support the university as an institution. I don't think its duping anyone.

What is your opinion NSG?

I only find it disconcerting when a student from one University is wearing the memorabilia of another university at school.

It is not a huge deal, just a pet peeve.

I used to have a MIT shirt I would wear all the time, but maybe I could get away with it as a HS student at the time.
Personally it seems kinda silly to limit apparel wearing like that, let people wear let they want.

Yes, why should it not? Seems like a stupid reason not to.

Wear it. It's not an insult to be a willing billboard advertising their college, nor is it an insult to show that you admire them through your choice of souvenir.

Is it an insult to wear a John Deere cap without ever having owned any of their farming equipment?

Is it an insult to wear a Steelers jersey, despite not being in the NFL?

People just have too damn much time on their hands trying to police everyone else.

Seems kinda silly to wear college-branded stuff for a school you didn't attend, but then I also don't have any college-branded stuff from the college that I did attend, mainly because I just sorta find college-branded clothing silly in general. :P Really, while I may think it's silly, being a fan of a particular college and owning/wearing appropriately branded stuff isn't any different from wearing stuff with your favorite sports team's branding, or stuff with the branding from a particular TV show or video game you like so... you do you?

yeah college brand clothing is never, like, good. It's just branded.

When my mother attended my commencement, she bought a shirt there with the university logo on it, and she never attended there. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Also, I have a sweatshirt that's unbranded but because it's a similar color to another major university in the region people think it's that university and ask where I got it. Well, it might not be possible to buy things from K-Mart in the not too distant future, but that's a completely different topic.

IMHO, in grade school and high school it's fine, maybe you want to attend there later in life.

I think there could be two "subquestions" here: 1) absent of a dress code or other regulations, is it OK to wear college apparel for somewhere you don't attend; 2) should there be a dress code or other regulations regarding college apparel on the campus of another college/university?

Mate, nobody cares what you wear. If you're late for class and can't find anything else, just throw it on and go about your day.

Oh, if we're talking about attending a different college it would be just plain rude to wear some other college's stuff, but I think the OP was about wearing it in general.

I wear apparel from Boise State, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Madison. I've never attended any of those schools. My conscience is absolutely clean. In fact, I have apparel for the school I do attend, but I don't wear it!

Isn’t that a bit of a false equivalence though?

A business giving away freebies to promote their product is just, well, business. A college intends, I think, that most of its apparel will be worn by those actually affiliated with the school. They want to promote their own as representatives of the school.

Haah, that reminds me of this one Thai dude who I went to school with. Every day, he'd bolt from building to building in heavy snow, wearing nothing but a tee-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops. Fun to watch. Too bad he got sick after a week. ^^'
