Most likely from 1991-1994 (or maybe a longer timeline of 1981-1994 ?), the nations of Athara Magarat and San Montagna engaged in a war over the Chatha; claimed by both nations. Chatha was historically one of the hangates of the Khas-Kirat Empire but had been time and again, come under San Montagnan occupation and was considered part of "San Montagna proper". After the Imperial War, the Empire of Magarat was once again divided into several warring hangates (that's a different story but related).
Then communism came to the Chuli Hangate. They "exported" it to their neighbors and by 1977; "Athara Magarat" was a united nation once again. Okay, maybe not that united
Very soon, voices within Athara Magarat started calling for annexation of Chatha into "AM proper". Problem was this new Athara Magarat was a communist state and very much aligned to the UCCR; whilst Chatha, being under San Montagnan influence (I very much imagine the Free Powers aka Miklania, Noronica and rest of the gang promising Chatha to San Montagna during the Imperial War and after it, it is like what SIkkim was to India - a protectorate of sorts whom everyone could see was to soon become the newest state of their "protector").
I think it might be okay to get the League here (how old are they again?) on 1980 for a referendum in Chatha. Fearful that the referendum would mean that Chatha is annexed into Athara Magarat and they will be facing a much stronger communist threat, San Montagnan forces push into Chathaese capital before the referendum is even held. The San Montagnan government manages to convince anti-communists across the Isles while Athara Magarat calls in the socialist internationals of the Isles.
There are two scenarios here:
- Scenario 1: The war starts from 1981 itself to 1994. It is very long and exhausting for both countries.
- Scenario 2: From 1981 to 1990, there are minor engagements across the border. Soldiers get killed by artillery shells here and there and both sides accuse each other of firing first. The League hastily promotes the 30th Parallel as the new border as Chatha is divided. Athara Magaratis and San Montagnan war hawks are not pleased at all; neither are hardline Chathaese nationalists who put up several rebellions, shout anti-League chants, etc. In the name of putting down rebellions, both Athara Magarat and San Montagna violate the 30th Parallel Line and minor skirmishes occur here and there for a decade. "Communist groups" from other nations start pouring into the battlefield as the San Montagnan line is pushed further and further back. In 1991, San Montagna and her allies "officially" declare war. The rest is history.
Aftermath:
- Athara Magarat and San Montagna have the 30th Parallel North as their new official borders; enforced by the League. There is still resentment on both sides at each other and at the League.
- Most of Chatha is in San Montagna now while a few portion of it is in AM. It will be worked upon further when my map arrives
- Athara Magarat shifts from a communist state to mixed economy and begins making allies with "Western" or "capitalist" nations while also having certain ties with communist nations. Eventually, it even becomes a founding member of the CU.
- I expect the war to have effects on other nations as well. Many "communist volunteer groups" from various nations would join Athara Magarat in the battlefield while San Montagna is aided militarily by a host of capitalist nations.
- TBD
Note: While Athara Magarat was in South Mesder; Kho Panha and Mesderina were still part of Athara Magarat at this time. I am not sure that they are still part of Athara Magarat here in Central Argus.
