JOHRUA
A Fantasy Faction Sandbox RP

~+ BACKGROUND +~+~+~+~+~+~+~
For 1,100 years, the Johrid Empire (pronounced YOH-rihd), also known simply as Johrua (YOH-rwah), after its founding emperor, has been the single most dominant political, economic, and cultural influence of the Eastern Continent, having controlled a whopping 70% of its territory at its peak. Years are measured from the year of the Empire’s foundation, and almost all the nations of the Eastern Continent speak the Johrid language on top of their native tongues. Its seat of power, Eunau, is the largest city in the Eastern Continent, and is known for the artistic and intellectual advancements its progenies helped foster.

The heyday of the empire has long passed, however.

For the last 344 years, the Johrid Empire has been ruled by the Anamuna Dynasty, and throughout its reign, has slowly descended into stagnation, corruption, infighting, and instability. Under a long series of Anamuna monarchs mired by flagrant extravagance, incompetence, or downright insanity, the power and influence of the Johrid Empire was slowly but surely diminished, and with this decline came waves of previously dormant sub-nationalism from the constituent states of the empire, as well as invigorated challenges from the outside.

On January 5 of the year NE1190, Emperor Kanuri V Anamuna died suddenly at the age of 69; his son and successor, Emperor Nihei VIII Anamuna, was just 17, three years too young to govern, according to the laws of the empire. The governance of the empire fell upon the Central Council of Ministers, a committee of eight men presiding over the various imperial bureaucracies, but as if an expression of anger from the gods, another death befell the highest echelon of the Johrid Empire’s government; 76-year-old Amro Artenos, Chairman of the Council and de facto leader of the Empire, fell downstairs and broke his skull in his home, just half a month after the death of Kanuri V.

With the already stagnating Johrid Empire thrown into political chaos by the two successive deaths, which have left responsibility for the Empire's governance in the hands of a 17-year-old boy and a headless committee, the various nations of the Eastern Continent have begun scrambling to find their bearings, taking advantage of the weakening grip of the central imperial government over its territories and a rise of new powers, economic and military alike, all over the Eastern half of the world. None have any doubts as to what fate will befall the Eastern Continent and its oldest state.

The age of the Johrids is over. A new era looms on the horizon.

~+ SYNOPSIS +~+~+~+~+~+~+~
Welcome to Johrua! In this RP, you'll be playing one (or more) of the nations that make up the Eastern Continent, whether they be independent nations or constituents of the Johrid Empire. The idea of this RP is for players to come up with their own lore; as such, you can take free rein when it comes to designing your faction (within reasonable limits, of course). There is no overarching plot, beyond what has already been spelled out in the lore; whatever happens in this world is entirely up to you, the players.

~+ MAP & WORLD INFO +~+~+~+~+~+~+~
Image
For reference, the Eastern Continent is about 0.75x the size of Africa.

Many thanks to Utceforp for the map. This isn’t the final version, however; use it as reference for now. At the moment, the coloured parts show confirmed and pending territorial claims; when the IC opens, we'll have a map of confirmed territories.

  • In this world, there are two main continents: the Eastern Continent (where our RP will primarily be taking place) and the Western Continent.

For 1,100 years, the Eastern Continent has been dominated by the Johrids, but as mentioned, their grip is slowly beginning to weaken, opening the way for new powers to emerge. The Western Continent, which is almost triple the size of the Eastern Continent, is inhabited in the far West by three perpetually warring empires, none of which have any interest in anything beyond their own parochial concerns; given the distance and the political situation, it's not likely anyone will be coming into contact with them anytime soon. A massive series of mountain ranges and canyons down the centre of the Western Continent (not represented on the map) separates its western and eastern halves from each other.

Politically, the world is divided into two spheres: the Western Sphere is dominated primarily by the three warring empires, and the Eastern Sphere, up till now, by the Johrid Empire. Aside from occasional maritime trade in oddities and status symbols, no contact is ever made between the two Spheres.
  • Within the Johrid Empire, there are three main levels of political and demographic organisation.

The inner empire refers to the territories that are located close to the centre of power of the Empire. These territories have been governed directly by Eunau since the abolishment of the imperial family's collateral branches by Arlesti I, and it in these territories that the bulk of Eunau's 300,000 troops are stationed.

The grand protectorates, which bear the prefix "Grand Johrid Protectorate", are nations which are considered to be constituents of the Empire, but which have been granted high levels of autonomy and self-governance. Their militaries and state apparatus are still beholden to the main government, and they have to pay annual taxes (which some of the protectorates consider to be of unfairly large magnitude), but by and large, they are left to their own devices.

The vassal states or colonies are, as their names would suggest, not strictly speaking part of the Johrid Empire; they exist merely as resource farms for the Empire to exploit. As of NE1190, however, the Johrid Empire maintains no such territories, as they have by and large broken away from the Empire in preceding centuries.

Aside from these, however, there are numerous states within the Johrid Empire that do not fit into either of these three categories, due usually to the circumstances surrounding their being assimilated into the Empire, or other political reasons.
  • Technology in this world is relatively advanced, with the most advanced of nations possessing the likes of primitive steam-powered airships and iron steamships. Muskets are commonplace, but bows and arrows are still widely used for their greater adaptability, ease of reloading, and acceptability of enchantment.
  • Magic, too, is commonplace, though the general trend is that nations which have invested much into the development of their magic sciences will, undoubtedly, have neglected their technological sciences to some extent. While magic can be used for non-combat purposes (the possibilities are myriad), it features most prominently in military use, where combat mages either use blasts of magic to directly attack enemies, or enchant their weapons with them to grant them special powers. The ease with which a weapon can be enchanted is its acceptability of enchantment, or AOE, and the general rule is that weapons with more complicated components will be harder to enchant, as each individual component has to be done separately. Note: After some consideration, I have opted not to include a magic-tech scale, so as to allow players more flexibility in determining the advancement levels of their nations.
  • While humans are the dominant race, there are also other nonhuman races present. The Johrid Empire, while predominantly human (as with pretty much every other nation), maintained a policy of tolerance, and as such, there are states within the empire that comprise and are ruled primarily by nonhumans.

~+ RULES +~+~+~+~+~+~+~
  • The usual. Don't godmod, metagame, or be an arse OOCly. Regarding the last one: you're free to be as nasty as you like in the IC, but given the delicate nature of politics, it's not likely you'd survive for long that way.
  • I will try as hard as possible to give everyone free rein in what they'd like to do. On your end, do try to keep it reasonable; time travel and laser cannons are, for obvious reasons, not allowed.
  • I'm not that picky about posting frequency (seeing as I myself can often lag at times), but do inform us beforehand if you're not going to be able to post for more than a week. We'll see what we can do to help you.
  • You can play as many nations as you can handle, but please don't use that to political advantage (you know what I mean). After all, no nations are ever really on 100% good terms in real life.
  • Do enjoy yourself, and feel free to talk to me if you've got feedback on anything!

~+ The Johrid Empire +~+~+~+~+~+~
Name of State (official)
Johrid Empire

Name of State (common)
Johrua

Population
31,600,000

Dominant race
Humans (>85% of population)

Size of military
100,000 active
  • 60,000 Army
  • 20,000 Navy
  • 18,000 Air Force
  • 2,000 miscellaneous (bodyguards, secret police, etc)
200,000 reserve

Leader
  • His Imperial Majesty Nihei VIII Anamuna, Emperor of Johrua
Emperor Nihei VIII’s ascension to the throne came upon the death of his father, Kanuri V. Although he is relatively popular as a person, 17-year-old Nihei VIII will, in three years, take the helm of a nation that is rotten to the core with corruption and instability.

Other prominent leaders
  • Central Council of Ministers
    • His Excellency Sir Dahmon Roquilas - Deputy Chairman of the Central Council (now Acting Chairman of the Central Council)
Formerly the Deputy Chairman under Amro Artenos, Sir Dahmon Roquilas assumed control of the Central Council upon the death of his superior. Already 76 years old, Roquilas is seen as a relic of the previous era by many, and is expected, based on his past decisions and acts, to be a weak, indecisive leader.
    • His Excellency Sir Hrustan Thalbraas (Foreign Secretary)
Sir Hrustan Thalbraas is the influential foreign secretary of the Johrid Empire, having served in the post for almost sixteen years. Widely known as a charismatic, decisive, and ruthless leader, the 56-year-old Thalbraas is seen to be a potential challenger for the position of Chairman of the Council should a power struggle ensue in the highest level of imperial bureaucracy.
    • The Honourable Father Baridze Amlin, Archbishop of the Church of the Empire
70-year-old Archbishop Baridze Amlin is the leader of the Johrid Empire’s state church, and as such, is not only the spiritual leader of the nation, but also the head of the source from which the Emperor draws his mandate, thus making him a powerful player in his own right. While he has largely kept to the precedent of granting the Johrid states their right to practise their own indigenous religions, Archbishop Amlin has, throughout his 38 year tenure, stressed heavily on the supremacy of the State Church, and with the death of Kanuri V, it’s entirely likely that Amlin’s Church may seek to widen its power at the expense of state-level autonomy.

State religion
Arnihism
Arnihism has been the state religion of the Johrid Empire since its foundation 1,100 years ago. In Arnihism, there are two Gods: Arnu the Creator, and Nihimus the Destroyer (these two Gods lend the religion its name). They exist in tandem, with Arnu creating more when Nihimus has destroyed too much and Nihimus destroying more when Arnu has created too much. Worship of the two Gods involves performing several different magic rituals and abstention from red meat during the solstice months.

The form of the religion promulgated by the Johrid Empire is known as Johrid Arnihism, which blends Arnihist doctrine and scripture with Johrid nationalist ideologies.

History
The Johrid Empire was founded in the year NE1, at the conclusion of an eight-way war that had been raging for the past forty years; the king who had led the winning kingdom crowned himself Emperor, taking the name Johrua. While his new nation was known initially as the Eastern Empire, it soon came to be known as the Johrid Empire, about 100 years after Johrua’s death. No emperor has since taken the name Johrua, out of respect for the founding Emperor.

The Johrid Empire continued to expand its territories, and reached its present size in the year NE767, in the second year of the reign of Emperor Nihei II Eunomia, who is historiographically referred to as Nihei the Great. Only 21 when he took the throne, Nihei II pursued a policy of national unity, and upon the absorption of the Kingdom of Hajerus into Johrua, it is agreed that the empire had entered a golden age. During this period, peace was established throughout the Eastern Continent through the efforts of Nihei II and the rulers of the other sovereign nations around Johrua, and while he asserted the political and cultural dominance of his empire over the Eastern Continent, Nihei II made no further attempts to expand Johrua’s borders.

Upon the death of Nihei II in NE836, the Johrid Empire entered a succession crisis. Nihei II never married and never named a successor, and as such, with his death came also the termination of the House of Eunomia. The sixteen collateral branches of the imperial family could not agree on who was to succeed the throne, and as such, for ten years, the Empire was left without an Emperor. Governance fell upon the Central Council of Ministers and its Chairman Amnuri Aisennor, as the collateral families argued about who was to take power.

Eventually, in NE846, the House of Anamuna emerged victorious from the power struggle, and its patriarch, Prince Arlesti, became Emperor Arlesti I Anamuna. A ruthless leader, Arlesti I proceeded to destroy the other fifteen collateral houses that had challenged his house upon the death of Nihei II, staging elaborate public executions for their leaders and even their children, the youngest being no older than 12; this incident came to be known as the Tragedy of the Courtyard, and marked the beginning of the Johrid Empire’s steady decline into turmoil.

By the time of Nihei VIII Anamuna’s ascension to power in 1190, Johrua has become a mere shadow of its former splendorous self under Nihei VIII’s namesake predecessor, and while it retains its territory, there are signs that without the glue of good governance, cracks are beginning to form in the Empire, suggesting that the writing is already on the wall.

Name of State: The Most Sagely Magistrate of Lharuzja

Name of State (common): Lharuzja

Population: 500 thousand

Dominant race: Human

Size of military: 4% (Lharuzja mostly relies on mercenaries in times of conflict, though it has a large fleet of its own.)

Leader: High Magister Horus Leponto: A skilled mage and the patriarch of the young but influential House of Leponto. Blind but far from sightless, his eyes were plucked out during a magical experiment gone wrong, but he has erratic visions of the past, present, and future. He is 53 and a widower, having previously been married to the noblewoman Adria Vulno.

Other prominent leaders:

  • Magister Marcus Leponto: Younger brother of Horus Leponto, he is less intelligent, but no less skilled a mage, and a competent swordsman as well. He was elected to his position on the Council of Magisters mostly due to Horus's manipulations. He is 45, and married to Cassandra Leponto.
  • Magister Petros Jessanti: A childhood friend of Marcus. He has little interest in government, instead dedicating himself to his hobbies: Hunting game and seducing women. He has just enough magic in his veins to be eligible to sit on the Council, but only just. He is an important ally to the Lepontos, as practically everyone in the Lharuzjan government who isn't in the pocket of the Lepontos is instead in the pocket of the Jessantis. He is 42, and married to Miranda Jessanti.
  • Lady Miranda Jessanti (née Leponto): Daughter of Horus Leponto and Adria Vulno. As her husband has little interest in governing, she essentially runs his position in the Council of Magisters herself. However, as a female non-mage, she is doubly ineligible to officially sit on the council herself. An only child, she has inherited her father's cunning and political acumen. She is 32, and married to Petros Jessanti. This marriage is a political match only, and in reality the two have no love for each other.
  • Lady Adria Vulno: She's dead. Indeed, though most believe she died of disease, she actually stabbed herself in the belly after a period of depression. However, Horus has seen visions of her ever since his accident, and he relies on her for advice. She was once married to Horus Leponto, but she never had to take his name, as her family was far older and more prestigious than his. She was 30 when she died, and would be 50 were she alive today.

Location on map: The city of Lharuzja itself lies at the mouth of the river to the northeast of Vedros.

Capital city: Lharuzja

Largest city: Lharuzja

History: The first permanent settlement at the site of what would one day become Lharuzja was established by Johrid colonists about 900 years ago, and was known as "Lhau". A culture of nomadic elves, distant relatives of the Tau'Vedra, were already present in the region. These elves interbred with the Johrid settlers, founding powerful magical bloodlines that would one day become the great mage families.

About five hundred years ago, as Johrua began to decline, a coalition of tribes native to the forests north of Lharuzja decided to migrate southward due to a series of brutal winters. The tribesmen besieged Lhau and took the city, executing the Johrid governor and proclaiming a new kingdom. The Johrid Emperor's attention was elsewhere, however, and an Imperial force was never sent to retake the city.

The non-mage monarchy lasted for over century. The descendants of the tribesmen settled the surrounding area, and Lhau became "Lharuzja" in the tribesmen's tongue. The Lharuzjan mages were brutally repressed, as their abilities were seen as a threat to the monarchy. This caused increasing tension, until finally, the mages revolted.

A coalition of the most powerful mages in Lharuzja managed to overthrow the last king, assassinating him with a possessed snake. The mages declared a new republic: The aristocracy, consisting of the great mage families, would elect thirteen Magisters who would act as the executive branch of the new republic. One of these Magisters would be given the title of "High Magister", and authority over the military and foreign relations. The non-Mage "Low Men", descended from the northern tribesmen, would have no role in government.

The first High Magister was a hero of the revolution, Tethys Qercos, and the Magistrate adopted his personal arms (A white oak tree on a red field) as the city's official coat of arms. The now primarily-Johrid government pursued closer relations with Johrua, and ever since, Lharuzja has occupied a strange position of semi-autonomy from Eunau.

The House of Leponto is only two generations old. A Low Man merchant named Canno managed to accrue wealth from fishing the northern seas, and also demonstrated a degree of magical talent, allowing him to gain a title of nobility and the right to a surname. Canno became "Canno Leponto", married into a Mage family, and eventually became fabulously wealthy. This wealth was inherited by his son, Horus. Horus also inherited the talents of his Mage mother.

The House of Vulno was an old Johrid family from near Eunau. While far from the most powerful family, they owned fertile lands and could trace their ancestry to the days of Johrua himself. However, Lord Vulno was implicated in a plot to murder Emperor Kanuri V, and he and his young daughter Adria were forced to flee to Lharuzja. Canno Leponto, seeking to ensure his descendants would have more noble blood, took the opportunity arrange a betrothal between Horus and Adria, in exchange for a large sum of money.

Not long after their wedding, Adria gave birth to a daughter, Miranda. The pregnancy was difficult, however, and Adria never had any more children afterwards. She also started to sleep for long periods, and was closed off towards Horus and his relatives. Horus, confused by his wife's behaviour, turned his attention to politics and the art of magic.

Horus's brother Marcus had been friends with the heir to the Jessanti fortune for as long as anyone could remember, and Horus believed that this friendship could be used to form an alliance between the two powerful families. Horus secretly arranged a betrothal between Petros and Miranda, and soon afterwards used his and the Jessanti's political connections to obtain a seat on the Council of Magisters. On the day Horus took office, he publicly announced Miranda's betrothal to Petros. Three days later, he discovered Adria dead, with a knife in her belly.

Horus, driven in part by grief, became ever more consumed by scholarly endeavors. He became convinced that he could see into a "hidden world", and that he could visit it in the flesh if he discovered the correct ritual. However, things went wrong. In a ritual conducted by him and his brother Marcus, something went wrong, and in a strange fit he plucked out his own eyes. Ever since then, he has received prophetic visions, and has been visited by the ghost of Adria.

As the years went by, Miranda and Petros married, Horus was able to use his connections to get Marcus and Petros elected to the Council of Magisters, and after the old High Magister died from a suspicious illness, Horus himself ascended to the position. Horus has been the most powerful man in Lharuzja for the better part of two decades, and he may have ambitions even beyond it.

Name of State (official)

The Kingdom of Vedra

Name of State (common)

Vedros

Population

Approx. 4.2 million.

Dominant race

Tau Elves (self-proclaimed 'High Elves') form up approximately 87% or more of the population within Vedros. The Tau have silky skin that is touched by the sun without being dark. Their eyes have a tendency to be various shades of a vibrant purple/magenta color, with an extremely rare gold among few of them. A Tau often has a hair color that is sunkissed blonde, often turning black with age. The Tau are also rather tall compared to an average human - with their females being around six feet and four inches in height on average by adulthood, and their males being close to seven feet and six inches by adulthood on average.

Despite their height, they have an unnatural level of dexterity, flexibility, and agility - more than any being ought to have. They are undoubtedly also one of the fairest and appealing races of the realm, quite often the 'ugliest' of their wretches being compared to the most beautiful and fair women of humans. The Tau claim to be descended from a being they call the Magus, who they worship as a god. They use this as an explanation for their extremely potent magical capabilities that come very naturally to them.

The Tau also are rather long-lived, with the average member of their race being able to live for over a century easily - untouched and unmarred by disease.

But perhaps the most attractive thing about them to other species is that they can breed with every other humanoid species - usually, their Elven traits are the ones to carry over to some degree, but these half-breeds always have a shorter lifespan and are much weaker than an average Tau in magic. Still, that doesn't stop them from living longer and being more potent with magic compared to others of their species are naturally.

History

The Kingdom of Vedra finds its roots in the rise of the Tau Elves on the island of Vedros. Specifically, the Tau Elves came from a city that their ancestors had built into Mount Astarte (an Elvish word for 'Starborne' or 'Sky-Reaching'); this city became known as Tau'Vedra ("Vedros of the Tau", as an approximate but somewhat inaccurate translation). These Tau Elves came to quickly dominate the island of Vedros, simply by virtue of their strength in magic.

The Tau, themselves, call themselves High Elves and claim to be descendants of the Magus - an all-powerful magic god. Their capital city was built atop a Magical Nexus, an epicenter of magical activity and general magic capability. This, along with Mount Astarte's general magical ores and properties, allowed the Tau to become washed with magical energies to the point wherein magic was far more common than technology.

The Tau see no need for it, and in fact, any technology that does exist has been developed under the premise of using Magic to fuel it. This magitech is regulated by the Magi Order, who act as the religious and magical leaders of the Kingdom that became founded as the Tau united under Tau'Vedra's guidance. The Magitech that the Tau use became so advanced and strong that they could safely create artificial Nexus Points, to increase the strength/power of their mages and cities across the island.

The Kingdom of Vedra made contact with the Johrid Empire shortly after taking most of Vedros for itself. The Tau quickly became fascinated by the humans, as their island was mostly populated by Tau Elves and other, lesser elvish races. The Kingdom became a strong ally of the Empire, but maintained its independence by virtue of the fact that it had numerous magical protections and barriers that, quite frankly, left many human mages dumbfounded.

This, along with their Magitech-powered navies and armies allowed for the Kingdom to be a very strong magical ally for the Empire.

The Kingdom of Vedra often allowed its lesser nobilities and cities to wed with some humans, forging powerful bonds between some of the Minor Houses with the humans of Johrua - along with creating some rather powerful human-elf hybrid bloodlines.

The Kingdom of Vedra eventually came to create the Royal Court to help run all matters of the Kingdom, including ensuring that the Magi Order worked even closer with the Royalty than they had before - making the Archmage of the Order have the dualistic responsibility of Archmage and Warmaster for the Kingdom, due to the Royal Armies and Navies being dependant upon Magic and Magitech.

One of the positions here was the Representative, the only elected position in the Court: Lesser Elves and other non-Tau could vote one of their own to represent them in Royal Court proceedings, as well as to make requests of the ruling King or Queen.

The Kingdom of Vedra has predominantly been at peace for most of its history, although there is some racial tension between the Tau and the Lesser Elves.

Some political alliances are being forged among the varied Major and Minor Houses in the Nobility - the two most major of which are the “Purists” that see Lesser Elves and hybrids, as well as other non-Tau races, as unworthy of Vedros and its magical glory. They also believe the Magus would not want that 'taint' upon His soil. The second faction, the “Equalists,” see all as equal, but that this must be taken further by sharing the glory of Vedros and freedom for fall - by any means necessary.

Regardless, the reigning Queen Ophelia Thu'tan was once friends with Emperor Kanuri V and was saddened to hear of his passing. She intends to either visit the Empire, or send someone on her behalf, to offer her condolences as well as support to the new Emperor...

Added Lharuzja and Vedros to the map, and marked the Johrid border with a red line. I'm probably going to make a second map showing only Johrid territory, but in more detail.

Here is one of the Johrid Empire’s constituent states. I will apply for one more nation soon; an independent one.

Name of State (official)
The Grand Johrid Protectorate of Hajerus

Name of State (common)
Kingdom of Hajerus or simply Hajerus

Population
500,000

Dominant race
None- humans make up the largest portion of Hajerusian races at 52%, but the Kingdom is officially a multiracial state. Being part of the Hajerusian race depends less on ancestry and more on the practise of Hajerusian customs and the use of Hajerusi.

Note: All races in Hajerus follow the traditional Hajerusian naming convention. Hajerusian people have no surnames, and are known only by a given name and a patronymic (or, in rare cases, a matronymic). For example, the original name of King Anastas II was “Anastas Lemerothsuri”, i.e. “Anastas the Progeny of Lemeroth”. The suffix suri is a gender-neutral literary term meaning “progeny”, and is used to denote a patronymic or a matronymic. Foreign names would still be rendered in the Hajerusian tradition, e.g. “Ta’qerini T’ajat’nasuri”.

Only the King (or Queen) has no patronymic; he (or she) relinquishes it upon ascending to the throne.

Size of military
6,000 active
  • 3,000 Army and Royal Guard
  • 2,000 Air Force
  • 800 Navy
  • 200 Royal Hajerusian Combat Mage Corps
1,000 Reserve

Leader
  • His Imperial Majesty Nihei VIII Anamuna, Emperor of the Johrids
  • His Royal Highness Anastas II, King of Hajerus
58 years old, and formerly an accomplished soldier in the Hajerus Air Force, Anastas II has been King of the Grand Johrid Protectorate Kingdom of Hajerus for 19 years. A wise and benevolent but also highly ambitious and crafty leader, Anastas II has long been a strong supporter of Hajerusian secession from the Johrid Empire, and with the death of Kanuri V, will likely push further his agenda of Hajerusian independence. He is motivated both by a genuine belief in Hajerusian sovereignty and by a desire to restore the reputation of his dynasty, a reputation that had been tarnished by his father Lemeroth V, who ruled for a brief 4 years and was a well-known womaniser, embezzler, and necrophile.

Note: As per Johrid customs, King Anastas II is addressed as Your Highness rather than Your Majesty. This is because within the Johrid Empire, only the Emperor may be addressed with the term Majesty.

Other prominent leaders
  • Her Royal Highness Palla Anastassuri, Crown Princess of Hajerus
Palla Anastassuri is the 25-year-old Crown Princess of Hajerus, and will be crowned Queen of Hajerus upon the death of her father. Little is known about her stance on her father’s foreign policies, but her actions in domestic policy and her firm hand in decision making have made her a highly popular leader among the populace.
  • His Royal Highness Del Anastassuri, Prince of Hajerus
The younger brother of Crown Princess Palla, 19-year-old Prince Del Anastassuri is second in line to the throne of Hajerus. He is a lieutenant in the Royal Air Force of Hajerus, but owing to his position as a direct offspring of the King, has been known to transcend the chain of command. He is also far more vocal than his elder sister where foreign policy is concerned, and mimics his father’s secessionist views.
  • Chancellor Athel Nilessuri
The leprosy-afflicted Chancellor of Hajerus, 64-year-old Athel Nilessuri heads the internal bureaucracy of Hajerus, and handles foreign policy and financial matters on behalf of the King. He is perpetually shrouded in white silk to cover the sores on his skin, and as such, cuts a deeply imposing, unnerving figure; nevertheless, he is known to be refined and sophisticated, with a level of tact surpassing even his king, as well as a tongue capable of quick-witted gymnastics.

Location on map
Hajerus is a small nation shaped roughly like a diamond, located north of the Ilros River north of Lharuzja. It is one of a few Johrid protectorates that is not contiguous with the rest of the empire.

The port city of Alsebin, located along the western coast, is its main gateway to the seas; Hajerus maintains a small navy, but relies largely on its fleet of steam-powered airships to protect its port.

Capital city
Jun (population: 36,000)

Largest city (if different from capital)
Alsebin (population: 102,000)

State religion
None- Hajerus does not mandate an official religion, though the majority of its citizens are followers of the Arnihist religion.

History
During the time of antiquity, the Hajerusians (formerly known as the Hajerusi, a term now used to refer to the language spoken by the Hajerusians) were a nomadic people. One of the first to tame horses, they quickly established themselves as a prominent race of the southern fields.

The Hajerus Kingdom was founded in NE114 by Pavles Pavlessuri, the leader of a Hajerusian clan that had defeated several other clans in a war that came to be known as the First Hajerusian War. With all the Hajerusian clans united under his rule, Pavles (having crowned himself King of Hajerus) invaded and annexed a small kingdom in the north, and captured its capital city, renaming it Jun (meaning “light” in literary Hajerusi).

Over the next few centuries, the Kingdom of Hajerus slowly and steadily expanded its borders, eventually gaining control of a small port that it renamed Alsebin, through which it engaged in maritime trade. Under the 47 year reign of King Lawrenti IV (555 - 656), the Kingdom of Hajerus built a massive military navy with the aim of defending its largest source of income.

In NE770, Emperor Nihei II Eunomia declared war on the Kingdom of Hajerus, and while the Johrid Empire shared no borders with the Kingdom of Hajerus, the two fought a vicious naval battle that saw the Hajerusian navy utterly decimated and Alsebin burned halfway to the ground. This is known as the Second Hajerusian War, and discussion of it is still controversial in both the Johrid Empire and in Hajerus, influencing perceptions of Nihei II Eunomia and contemporary leaders alike. Defeated, King Esturid IX surrendered, and negotiations with the Johrids were opened in Jun. After much heated discussion, it was finally agreed that in exchange for the Kingdom of Hajerus being absorbed into the Johrid Empire (thus allowing Johrid troops to be stationed in Hajerus, and mandating that Hajerus pay taxes to the central imperial government), the Hajerusian royal family would be left in charge of the still semi-autonomous Hajerus. As such, on 1 December 771, at the conclusion of talks, the Kingdom of Hajerus became the Grand Johrid Protectorate of Hajerus, the last of the Grand Johrid Protectorates to be added to Johrua’s sprawling territories.

The Hajerusian independence movement’s roots can be traced to the short rule of Queen Jiruma I (949 - 971). During her reign, which lasted from 968 until her death in 971 just six days shy of her 21st birthday, Queen Jiruma I sent no fewer than 300 official edicts to Eunau, requesting a reduction in tax rates for the Hajerusian people. The 3 year reign of Jiruma I overlapped with two Johrid Emperors: Selvids IX Anamuna (901 - 969), who reigned from 950 to his death in 969, and Nihei V (953 - 1016), who reigned from 969 till his death in 1016. Both emperors rejected every single request, and Nihei V even returned 116 of the letters unopened to Jiruma I. At a summit of Johrid monarchs and governors in 971, the invalid Jiruma I, who contracted polio at a young age and was confined to a wheelchair, was humiliated in front of the other delegations by Nihei V and his Central Council of Ministers, who hurled insults at her, accusing her of disloyalty to the Emperor and mocking her crippled state. The Queen of Hajerus took every insult silently, without replying to any of them, and stayed through the entire duration of the summit.

Jiruma I died of pneumonia just two months later, but the people of Hajerus would never forget the horrendous manner with which their Queen was treated by the Emperor. Subsequent rulers of Hajerus, starting with Jiruma I’s younger brother Pavles XII, who took the throne after her death, all pursued a headlong policy towards the imperial government, continuing to dispute the tax rates imposed by the Johrid government and, on multiple occasions, threatening to secede. In response, the Johrid government has regularly stationed troops in Hajerus even up to this day, limiting the number of troops that the traditionally militaristic Hajerusian people may have.

Under the hedonistic King Lemeroth V, who was more pro-Johrua than most of his predecessors, a state of uneasy détente was achieved between Jun and its masters in Eunau; his death and the ascension of Anastas II put an end to that brief détente.

@Utceforp: a nicely written app. The only thing is that the decline of the Johrid Empire is considered to have begun around 350 years ago, after the death of Nihei II, not 500 years ago.

Other than that, your app is okay, so it’s accepted. For now, I’ll put it under the list of Johrid states.

Size of military

5% (approx. 210,000 or so).

Leader

Her Grand and Royal Majesty, Ophelia Thu'tan, the Queen of the Tau and Archduchess of the Lesser Elves.

Other prominent leaders

His Grand and Royal Highness, Voss Thu'tan, the Prince of the Tau and Duke of the Lesser Elves.

His Noble Righteousness, Artin Khuvi'rah, the Archmage of the Magi Order and Warmaster of the Kingdom.

Her Noble Righteousness, Jevra Ortis'mai, the Queen's High Counselor and Voice of the Tau.

His Excellency, Khari De'tato, the Royal Court Representative of the Lesser Elves.

Location on map

Vedros Island (the island to the west, off the continent's coast).

Capital city

Tau'Vedra.

Largest city (if different from capital)

Tau'Vedra.

State religion

The Magi Order acts as the Kingdom's religion, as they prescribe the teachings of magic as well as oversee all religious matters in relation to the Magus, the singular 'magic god' that all Tau are expected to worship.

History

WIP.

Tell me what you think so far! I'll try to get the history done tomorrow.

As for why no pictures, I prefer to describe things whenever possible. If you need pictures, I can grab them. And if my map location is unacceptable, I can change that as well.

BTW where on Vedros Island is Tau'Vedra? I'm working on adding more detail to the map.

Tau'Vedra is built into that large mountain/volcano on the southeast of the island. Likely on the west-facing part of it, to avoid being within Johrua's borders.

(If it's a volcano, they probably use magicks to keep it from erupting.)

I plan to finish the history tonight as soon as I possibly can.

Microedit: hey, OP, would it be fair to say that Queen Ophelia Thu'tan knew the current Emperor of Johrua's father to some degree? She's quite old (by human standards, anyway) - in her nineties, anyway.

It wouldn’t be out of the question, for sure. Go ahead and include it in your history if you feel like you have to.

Cool, thanks. I was mostly wondering that because I wanted to have the Queen of Vedros send her condolences to the current Emperor/ruling government, and felt it could be more personal if she actually knew the old Emperor.

EDIT: I have to be going now. Will get my history done tonight. I am REALLY excited for this.

Glad you are :)

As a matter of fact, I plan to open the RP with the funeral of Kanuri V and, a few days later, the coronation ceremony of Nihei VIII. It’ll be a platform for otherwise disparate countries to interact with each other through their dignitaries, as well as an opportunity for those displeased with Johrid rule to make their displeasure felt through their absence.

And here’s an independent state:

Name of State (official)
Empire of Nishikuni

Name of State (common)
Nishikuni

Population
835,000

Dominant race
Humans - the humans of Nishikuni, also known as “the dragon people” for their having domesticated the dragons* of the north, are a curious people. Separated from the rest of the Eastern Continent for two millennia by a range of unforgiving mountains, the Nishikuneans possess a distinct look, with golden, coppery skin, smaller eyes with epicanthic folds and amber irises, and silver hair. Most are rather short compared to other humans, with an average male height of 170cm and an average female height of 161cm.

Nishikuneans have two names: a given name and a surname. The surname is usually rendered before the given name, as per Nishikunese formatting; this holds through when translated into Johrid.

*The dragons of Nishikuni are by and large domesticated, though there are still species that exist only in the wild. For the most part, many of them are fire-breathing, and have armour that can resist arrows, though they are still vulnerable to enchanted weapons and firearms.

Size of military
40,000 active
  • 5,000 Imperial Guard (bodyguards to the imperial family and protectors of the capital)
  • 20,000 Imperial Land Corps (regular army)
  • 3,500 Imperial Dragon Force (dragon riders)
  • 1,000 Imperial Mage Division (combat mages + medical mages)
  • 500 Servicemen (planners, etc)

Leader
  • Empress Nami
53-year-old Nami of the House of Aoki has been ruler of the Nishikuni Empire for 6 years, since NE1184. Her rule, which began upon the abdication of her father, the now late Emperor Seimei, has been characterised by a further militarisation of the Nishikuni and an increase in trade with nations not affiliated with the Johrid Empire, breaking with the Nishikuni Empire’s longstanding policy of absolute neutrality.

Other prominent leaders
  • Crown Prince Asuka no Miya, Yuma
The eldest child of Empress Nami, Crown Prince Yuma is 34 years old, heads his own branch of the Imperial Family (the House of Asuka), and is in joint command of the military with Lord High Steward Okakoji Naruo. He has two sons, aged 3 and 1, and is expected to succeed his mother as Emperor in the future. Despite his background as a military dragon rider and an officer in the Imperial Dragon Corps, Crown Prince Yuma prefers a pacifist foreign policy, disagreeing with his mother’s more traditional, confrontational stance towards Johrua.
  • Lord High Steward Okakoji Naruo
The 68-year-old Lord High Steward Okakoji Naruo is the highest ranking member of the non-royal sections of the imperial government, and is in charge of economic planning and organisation of imperial administrative divisions. He is known to be a quiet man who seldom expresses his opinions, faithfully carrying out the orders and requests of the Empress without question.
  • High Priest Iseya Shuhei
The High Priest of Yatogamido, 53-year-old Iseya Shuhei is the leader of Yatogamido, the state religion of Nishikuni. Like Empress Nami, Iseya is a Johrua hawk, and supports remilitarisation of the Nishikuni Empire, though he is reluctant to engage in economic war.
  • Princess Aoki no Miya, Yuhiru
The second child of Empress Nami and her only daughter, 27-year-old Princess Yuhiru is fourth in line to the throne of Nishikuni, after her elder brother Yuma and his two sons, Joichi and Joji. She is known to be an exceptional painter, with several of her works hanging in foreign palaces, having been given away as diplomatic gifts. Princess Yuhiru is also known to be a skilled magic user and swordsman, and is in possession of the Suijinto, an enchanted sword with water-elemental powers created during the Nomu Civil War.
  • Prince Aoki no Miya, Yuya
Prince Yuya, 22, is the youngest son of Empress Nami, and is a junior officer, archer, and tactician in the Imperial Dragon Corps. He is known to be keenly in tune to the politics of the Eastern Continent, more so than his diplomatic sister Yuhiru, but keeps his actual views on matters to himself. Yuya is in possession of the Raijinyumi, an enchanted bow with lightning powers created during the Nomu Civil War.

Location on map
The icy strip in the north with the green pine trees.

Capital city
Ihama (population: 226,000) (located at the mouth of the little river at the west of the ice fields)

Largest city (if different from capital)
Ihama

State religion
Yatogamido
The polytheistic Yatogamido is the indigenous religion of Nishikuni, and is one of the few religions that survived the rise of the bi-theistic Arnihism. It has been tied closely to the Nishikunean people up till the present day.

Yatogamido has 76 gods and goddesses, with each one presiding over an aspect of human life (e.g. agriculture or music). The supreme god is Yatojin, a god who is often depicted as a winged hare, and who is known to be the father of all the other gods.

History
The foundation of Nishikuni dates back to antiquity, and the stories pertaining to the origins of the people living in the north have been lost to history.

The earliest record of a nationstate existing in the region is a collection of books detailing the reign of an Emperor Tomu, who presided over a population of 6,000 until around BNE400. Little is said about this early Nishikuni population, but it bears significance as the first of four great milestones in the history of the Nishikuni people.

The second great milestone took place at roughly the same time as the creation of the Johrid Empire; around NE3, records become more extensive, and tell of the Empire of Nishikuni’s successful domestication of horses under Emperor Joshu. (Horses hailing from Nishikuni’s territories look very different from horses from the southern parts of the Eastern Continent, possessing long hair all over their bodies that makes them look like hornless musk oxen. When visiting other countries, which almost always have lower temperatures than Nishikuni, this hair is trimmed upon arrival, and the Nishikunese horses end up looking like normal horses until it grows back.)

This achievement allowed the Nishikunese to expand their territory downwards, all the way down to the Arima Mountains, where they were able to engage in agricultural activities, growing corn, potatoes, and grain for the first time and even raising sheep and goats for consumption, to supplement their previously fish heavy diet. From the reign of Emperor Yoyoe (ruled NE220 - NE256), the Empire of Nishikuni officially maintained neutrality, specifically with regard to the rising Johrid Empire; in a document known as the Third Edict, Emperor Yoyoe declared that the Empire of Nishikuni would neither side with or against the Johrid Empire. It is a foreign policy that has been upheld up until the reign of the incumbent Empress Nami.

With their increased self-sufficiency, the Nishikuni began to further develop their magic sciences and martial arts, with at least five different forms of combat magic developed in the century following Yoyoe’s death. The subsequent two emperors, Genji (ruled NE256 - NE300) and Senno (ruled NE300 - NE318), relegated more power to the municipal authorities, dividing Nishikuni into two administrative regions, the North and the South. This decision was to lead to the fatal third milestone of Nishikunean history: the Nomu Civil War.

Displeased with a perceived series of faults against the southern Nishikuneans, in NE401, Governor Nomu Ineji declared a separation of South Nishikuni from the main empire, effectively depriving the rest of the Empire of the arable farmlands on which they depended for grain and livestock. Unable to accept the political and logistical ramifications of a secession, Emperor Akira (346 - 404) mobilised the entire Imperial Guard, and War was waged between the Army (which mostly sided with the south) and the Guard (which, being directly subordinate to the Emperor, was loyal to the main empire).

In 405, a year after the death of Emperor Akira, the recently crowned Emperor Ino (381 - 488) defeated the uprising, thus putting an end to the civil war. He abolished the administrative divisions, in effect placing all of the Nishikuni Empire under central control once again, and issued the Twenty Ninth Edict, declaring any subsequent attempt to geographically or ideologically divide Nishikuni to be a crime against the state (the vagueness of this Edict has occasionally been abused for political ends). By the time Emperor Ino died at the ripe old age of 108, Nishikuni had quickly recovered from the civil war, and had by and large rebuilt its infrastructure.

In 551, Nishikuni experienced its fourth and final milestone; the domestication of dragons. An ambitious project set into motion by Ino in the final years of his life, the imperial Nishikunean military finally realised his dream when, in 551, a young rider named Honjo Takumi flew for two hours on the back of a red dragon (he later died tragically when the ship he was on sank on its way to Alsebin). This breakthrough led to a mass domestication of dragons by the Nishikuneans for various purposes, and while the Fiftieth Edict passed by Empress Enya in 616 forbade the flying of dragons outside of Nishikuni’s territory, the Nishikuneans had come to be known as the Dragon People.

With their borders heavily protected and their neutrality undisputed, the Empire of Nishikuni entered a 400-year era of peace and prosperity. Relying heavily on magic rather than technology, Nishikuni does not use firearms, steamships, or airships, preferring instead to fight with enchanted weapons (though there have been few cases of Nishikuni ever having to fight on a large scale to begin with).

The decline of the Johrid Empire under the Anamuna Dynasty had a great economic impact on Nishikuni. Production of metal became far more inefficient in Johrua, processes being mired with corruption and standards of accountability left unenforced; consequently, Nishikuni was unable to import the metal it needed from Johrua, suffering as a result from a shortage of iron, steel, and copper. Several attempts were made at holding Johrua accountable for its economic mismanagement, but a lack of enthusiasm from the inside meant that these efforts were largely unfruitful.

Since the crowning of the incumbent Empress Nami in 1184, Nishikuni has showed signs of slowly abandoning their neutrality towards the affairs of the Johrids; through a series of punitive tariffs against Johrid goods and partnerships forged with independent regional powers, as well as an increase in military spending and recruitment, it is not known how much longer the otherwise reclusive and almost mystical Empire of Nishikuni will adhere to the Third Edict.

You write that the continent (I guess both parts together) is as big as Africa. Yet it looks on the map, there seam to be sub-polar zones both in the north and the south. Is the planet much smaller then earth, or how is that? (Because Africa is basically just tropical zone in the middle with subtropical zones north and south of it, no temperate or even cold climates.

(Also tag ;) )

Thanks for your interest :)

ICly, there are two parts to that bit about the ice. Firstly, the world in which this RP takes place is slightly smaller than Earth, as you said. Secondly, the sub-polar zones in this world are larger than those of our world, ergo we see ice and Siberian-esque steppes closer to the equator than in our world. Also, magick and shit.

OOCly, I wanted to keep the size of the continent manageable for a period of time roughly analogous to the early post-Byzantine era (albeit with a few technological oddities here and there, like primitive steam power), while also including a generous range of different types of terrain for players to choose.

I'm still writing the app, so consider this a tag.

Hello, there.

You can be Co-OP if you like; I plan to have two, seeing as I'm unsure of my schedule in three months' time, but for now, I'll put your name under the Co-OP section.
