RTC News is the Federal Republic of Carloso's publicly funded news service, operating since its foundation on the 31 December 1959. Our services are offered in English and Spanish; the first and second official languages of Carloso respectively, but our content is available across the world. RTC News is a 24/7 news services, with offices located in almost every city in Ireland and a large, dedicated staff who strive to deliver balanced, objective journalism. Outside of Carloso, we have offices and news corespondents located in many of the world's major countries. As we are a public body, we are financed primarily through advertising, our own investments and funding given to us directly from the government. As of 2018, Carloso does not have a television licence fee.

A Brief History — Despite its population, Carloso was introduced to television relatively late when compared to most nations. Under the Broadcasting Act 1959, Radio, Television of Carloso (RTC); the acronym is the same for the Spanish version (Radio, Televisión de Cárloso), the Federal Republic of Carloso was to have its first public broadcaster starting just before midnight on New Year's Eve, 1959. Millions of new televisions were bought in anticipation for the technological revolution that was to come. At 23:30, the letters 'RTC' flashed up for the first time and President de Houérou, in full military regalia, addressed the nation. RTC News began airing the very next day, taking the form of a thirty minute news programme at one minute past six in the evening, just before the station stopped broadcasting at seven.

The race for the leadership of the National Salvation party heated up again today as Minister for Internal Affairs Estebán Santander announced his intention to campaign for the position at a press conference in Secano. Former President and current Deputy President George Spalding announced his candidacy early last week. This comes after President Tobón announced his plans to retire from the party leadership in November next year, ahead of the general election in 2020. Among the international reactions, Nifonese Shogun Maki Kojiro released a statement expressing his wish that "the future Carlosian government uphold the virtues of national sovereignty and common dedication to fight against hostile forces of globalism, Marxism and liberalism". More on this at one minute past six.

The Law Society of Carloso has voted overwhelmingly to remain neutral in the upcoming referendum on the proposed Twenty-eighth Amendment of the Constitution of Carloso. The amendment, if passed, would result in Christianity becoming the country's state religion. An InfoReal poll commissioned by RTC News and published yesterday suggests a slight lead for the Yes side of 40% against No at 37%. National Salvation is currently the only party in the Parliament endorsing a Yes vote, while all others have expressed their intentions to campaign for a No vote on the amendment. The referendum is scheduled to take place on 10 November 2018. The President of the Law Society, Mr Trystan Harris, expressed the view that the vote would be a "matter of conscience for people to decide on for themselves".

The RTC Weather Service has issued a red warning for the Cadena Islands ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Eiros. The storm, which has now strengthened into a Category 4 weather system, is not expected to make landfall in mainland Carloso and will weaken as it moves into cooler waters. Hurricane Eiros is the fifth tropical storm system to form in the Musgorocian Ocean this year. Estebán Santander has directed local authorities to evacuate residents to shelter before the storm arrives, warning that Hurricane Eiros "poses a serious danger to everyone on the islands".

An independent inquiry is expected to begin into an anonymous tip given to the National Intelligence Service that several Carlosian political parties are being funded illegally by undisclosed foreign entities. The individual, who cannot be named for legal reasons, alleges that a number of political organisations have taken in clandestine foreign donations, without notifying the relevant authorities. A spokesperson for the NIS refused to confirm what parties were connected with the investigation, though stated that the committee would publish its findings publicly by the end of October.

Concerns have been raised after reports emerged that a mass brawl took place in Moran's pub in Madrigal, often frequented by Members of Parliament. Favourite for the leadership of the National Salvation party, Estebán Satander, was reported to have been involved. A group of unidentified individuals suddenly attacked Mr Santander, who managed to fend them off. Several people intervened in the attempted assault, causing the situation to quickly devolve into a mass brawl. Several people were injured in the fight, though none seriously. President Tobón was not in the pub at the time. The Madrigal Metropolitan Police Service were called to the scene, though no arrests were made.

Polls open on state religion referendum

Polling stations across Carloso have opened on a referendum on the proposed Twenty-eighth Amendment of the Constitution of Carloso. If approved, the amendment will insert the line "Christianity shall be the religion of the State" into Section 2 of Article 20 of the Constitution, effectively establishing Christianity as the Federal Republic's state religion. Stations stations opened at 07:00 this morning and will close at 22:00 in every constituency. Residents on the Cadena Islands have already voted on the proposal, casting their ballots a day early due to concerns about bad weather. The heated campaign has split public opinion down the middle, with most opinion polls indicating that the result could go either way. This is seen by many as a referendum on National Salvation's performance over the last seven years in government, especially that of President Cárlos Tobón. Turnout has been reported as good across the country, particularly in more rural areas. President Tobón and his wife Nicolasa cast their ballots in New Belfast this morning, while Minister for Internal Affairs Estebán Santander voted in Haxton.

Out of the six parties in Parliament, National Salvation is the only one backing a Yes vote, while the Conservatives, Democrats, Socialist Republicans and Communists are backing a No vote. The Synarchist Union is also backing a No vote on the basis that Catholicism should be the state religion of Carloso. Catholic Archbishop Ezequiel Semprún expressed his approval for a Yes vote, though various other Christian dominations and minority religions have encouraged a No vote. While a successful Yes vote would be a major victory for National Salvation, a No vote might spell bad news for the party in the 2020 general election. RTC News, in partnership with InfoReal, will have an exit poll out 22:00 when stations close and should give a rough indication of the result. The Madrigal Times and Roldán Analytics will also have a poll out at the same time. A moratorium on coverage of the referendum; for the first time including social media, was put into place at 23:00 last night and will last until polls close.

Tobón declares victory as state religion amendment set to pass

President Tobón has declared victory for the Yes side in the state religion referendum as it looks like the proposal to insert the Twenty-eighth Amendment into the Constitution of Carloso is set to pass by a large majority. Addressing a large crowd of supporters alongside fellow MPs and family in his home constituency of New Belfast, Tobón declared that "the Carlosian people have declared that they are not afraid to call themselves Christian. It is our identity, the fabric of our civilisation. The nation will continue to wade against the flailing tide of international finance and globalism that seeks to destroy our heritage. Nothing can take this away from us." Shortly afterwards, Minister for Internal Affairs Estebán Santander MP; who is a favourite to succeed Tobón as leader of the National Salvation party, addressed another large gathering of supporters in Ebon. Backers of a No vote have expressed disappointment at the apparent result, with Democratic Party leader Eric O'Neill regarding it as "a dark day in Carlosian politics." A press release from the office of Archbishop Ezequiel Semprún of Madrigal indicated that the Archbishop was "pleased" with the result.

Results have been received from 171 of the 286 constituencies so far, with figures largely in line with the exit polls published last night when voting stations closed across the country. As of 18:00, Yes leads on 57.05% with No on 42.95%. Issues with fax machines in some areas have delayed the return of results to the chief reporting officer in Madrigal, though it is expected that all constituencies will have reported their results by midnight tonight. An InfoReal/RTC News poll with a sample of 6,000 indicated that the referendum would pass by a 60/40 margin, significantly more than was expected by opinion polls in the run-up to the referendum. Another poll by Roldán Analytics/Madrigal Times with a sample size of 4,500 indicated a similar result in favour of Yes by a 58/42 margin. While it was widely indicated by polls early in the campaign that Yes would win, it looked like its lead had been eroded considerably in the closing weeks and that there was even a chance that No would scrap a victory. This speculation, however, was quickly dashed as the result became clear when ballot boxes were opened.

Tobón defends Edomite response to LGBT demonstrations but urges 'restraint'

Following widespread international condemnation of the response of Edomite authorities to so-called LGBT demonstrations in the city of Fineberg; which have left dozens dead and many seriously injured, President Tobón has come out in defence of the actions of the City Militia and local police forces, while simultaneously calling for future 'restraint'. Domestic media outlets reported that the various law enforcement units used metal nets dropped from helicopters to immobilise protesters, while anti-tank missiles, autocannon fire and grenade launchers were apparently used to dislodge demonstrators who sought shelter in nearby buildings, with hundreds more claiming asylum in nearby embassies. Earlier, authorities had used water cannons on an event near the Betharan Palace in Fineberg, which had been attended by numerous well known pop stars, comedians and politicians. It is understood that numerous countries concerned with the situation have granted access to their diplomatic missions in New Edom, including Mcnernia and Thermodolia, to fleeing protesters.

In a press release that was later relayed to Setsuzoku, President Tobón stated that "while violence must always be used as a last resort in such situations, and the right to free and open expression and protest in public constitutionally enshrined", he went on to say that "we must always remain vigilant and tackle the anti-nationalist, communistic sentiment that is being fermented around the globe in the guise of progressivism and social justice". He went on to describe the demonstrations as "well coordinated paramilitary efforts by internationalist forces". When asked to clarify if the Carlosian embassy in Fineberg would be open to those seeking asylum, a spokesperson clarified that the Carlosian embassy was not located near enough to the site of the demonstrations and that no individuals had so-far requested entry. The spokesperson went to say further that the Carlosian embassy would not be admitting any individuals and that they would turn over any persons of interest to the Edomite authorities immediately.

Many have drawn similarities between this incident and the incident which occurred in Oceanica in 2017, where far-left rioters unsuccessfully attacked the Nifonese community of Little Kiyosu in response to the election of President Stanley Bowden. The Nifonese residents responded by assaulting the demonstrator's camp at night with armoured bulldozers and flamethrowers, killing dozens of people and sparking condemnation from many. The violence ultimately resulted in an armed intervention by SACTO-aligned private military corporations. Last year, the National Intelligence Service Foreign Office released a report warning that the "perceived 'oppression' felt as a result of measured responses to LGBT extremism" were being used as a recruiting tool by cells aligned with Homofront and similar terrorist organisations.

The Department of External Affairs is expected to shortly issue a cautionary travel warning to Carlosians currently in New Edom or planning to go there in the near future.

Political turmoil as Socialist Republicans to merge with RAÍZ

Only hours after it was announced that the membership of the Socialist Republicans had narrowly voted to back a proposed merger with the new RAÍZ left-wing populist party, eight MPs have met with leader Maria Chambers to tender their resignation before the decision takes effect at midnight. This represents just over a quarter of the party's current number of MPs in the Parliament of Carloso. Led by the representative for the constituency for Zamora South-Central, Elisenda Abellán, released a statement stating that they planned to sit as independents for the time being, but would look into forming or joining a political party in the future. Mrs Abellán strongly condemned the merger, accusing Chambers of "choosing dangerous populist rhetoric over principled socialism". In response, Mrs Chambers said that she "regretted" the decision made by the group to resign, but went on to defend the vote, saying that that "the merger is wholly necessary for the growth of the left in Carloso and the dethronement of the bigoted individuals who currently wield power", referring to the National Salvation government of President Cárlos Tobón.

Succeeding long-time political veteran and left-wing firebrand Liam Figueroa as leader of the Socialist Republicans in 2017, Mrs Chambers is an outspoken proponent of a united left-wing political front to counter National Salvation, which presently controls nearly 60% of the seats in Parliament and has continued to perform strongly in opinion polls for the next general election in 2020. Starting last June, she has talked numerous times with the leadership of RAÍZ, a small but rapidly growing left-wing populist political party which formed out of the Democratic Party national executive's decision to expel the members of the leaders of its youth wing following violence on the campus of Ebon Metropolitan University in April 2017. Members of this organisation have openly called for the assassination of President Tobón, reportedly leading to it to be placed on a blacklist of dangerous political organisations by the National Intelligence Service Domestic Office (NISDO) in December last year. Since its foundation, it had become a powerful voice on college campuses across the country.

If the merger goes ahead at midnight, it will mean the end for the over 100 year old Socialist Republicans, which was founded in 1907. It is widely regarded as Carloso's first mainstream left-wing party and, while it never led a government, it did form part of several coalitions, with Liam Figueroa serving as Deputy President of the Executive Council during the Democrat-led 'Rainbow Coalition' government of 2001 to 2006. Mr Figueroa has not commented on the merger. In reaction to the announcement, President Tobón dismissed RAÍZ as a "protest party existing at a time where there is nothing to protest about", while cautiously commending the MPs that resigned for "at least standing by their principles".

BREAKING: Gargantuan explosions decimate Port of Madrigal

Madrigal is in a state of paralysis today after at least two massive explosions wiped out almost the entirety of the Port of Madrigal. Eyewitnesses reported an initial faint explosion, followed by a larger one which inflicted extensive damage on the Port. Several seconds later, it was followed by a much larger blast that sent a mushroom cloud towering into the skies of Madrigal, while fire rained down on everything below. Authorities are currently investigating the nature of the explosion, saying that they believe it was a result of an ignition of natural gas contained in one of the dome structures on the LNG carrier MV Andalucia, which was docked at the terminal in the Port of Madrigal this morning.

Thousands of emergency responders have descended on the Port to assist the injured and search for survivors beneath the debris. The Department of Internal Affairs has already released a statement saying they believe that fatalities "are expected to be in the hundreds". The Madrigal Metropolitan Police Service has stated that it is not ruling out terrorism as a cause, adding that "an accidental ignition of natural gas in its sub-zero, liquid state is impossible under normal circumstances" and that it will be investigating reports that a smaller explosion was heard before the main blasts.

Several buildings were demolished by the explosions, while hundreds of shipping containers, cars and other vehicles have been destroyed. A number of ships are reported to have sustained damage. The MV Andalucia is believed to have sank as a result of the explosions, while many warehouses, trawlers and the LNG terminal operated by MGS Ltd. were all wiped out by. Windows for miles around were shattered, believed to have injured thousands. Multiple fires are reported to be burning, though many have now been brought under control by firefighter crews. Debris strewn across the M2 motorway has caused several injuries, with authorities warning that it is currently impassable in some parts. President Tobón is believed to be making his way to the Port of Madrigal, releasing a short statement in which he said that "We fear that there has been an unfathomable loss of life today, and many more who will forever be scared by their injuries. We will investigate this catastrophe and, if needs be, destroy whoever is responsible. I pray to God that we can recover from this."

Tobón vows revenge as Hindu cult claims responsibility for Madrigal attack

Mere hours after the attack on the Port of Madrigal rocked the capital, leaving hundreds dead and inflicting billions of deroes of damage, a Hindu cult group calling itself the International Shiva Consciousness Foundation (ISCF) has stepped forward to claim responsibility. The organisation, which is believed to be based out of the island state of Bangka in the Southern Furukuran Sea, released a short video, where an unnamed spokesman claimed that they had managed to smuggle an anti-ship missile into Carloso, later used to attack the MV Andalucia. The spokesman also claimed that the launcher for the missile was in fact a converted shipping container and had been activated remotely. Addressing the motivation behind the attack, the spokesman claimed that it had been done in retaliation for the Carlosian government's alleged role in the breakup of the Greater Philippine Bayan and downfall of the Erin Terten regime.

If true, this would appear to confirm claims by eyewitnesses that they heard a smaller explosion prior to two main blasts. There was no indication of when or where it was shot, but the video was shared by multiple ISCF-affiliated accounts on the Punch and Setsuzoku social networks. The latter has swiftly acted to purge the content from its platform. Following the release of the video, President Tobón addressed both national and international media on the latest developments, saying that "We have good reason to believe that the claims of responsibility being made by this Hindu cult are authentic. This was a terror attack, designed to kill as many people as possible and cripple our economy. I promise that we will do so much worse to them. Madrigal will recover, we will rebuild, and the lives lost will be avenged."

The International Shiva Consciousness Foundation is known to operate in Carloso and has reportedly been involved in 'faith workshops' at Carlosian universities in the past on the invitation of student unions. It is believed to be a major force in the underground New Age movement in particular. There is at least one congregation in Carloso, located near Haxton, Ebon and led by a woman who calls herself 'Sannyasini Shanaya'. Their current status is unknown in light of the attack on Madrigal.

Carlosian government purges hundreds of academics with ties to Hindu cult

The Carlosian government has fired hundreds of professors and university staff from the country's third level institutions for having alleged ties or relations with the International Shiva Consciousness Foundation, the Hindu terrorist cult which has claimed responsibility for the devastating attacks on the Port of Madrigal which have left 498 people dead so far. Pursuant to the powers provided to the President of the Executive Council of the Federal Republic of Carloso under the State of Emergency Act 2015, President Tobón announced the immediate dismissal of 538 college-level academics, the cancellation of their passports and the rescinding of their postgraduate doctoral degrees. The state of emergency was declared yesterday shortly following the release of a video by the ISCF where a spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack. The measure was passed in Parliament by an overwhelming majority, the Conservatives, Synarchists and several independents joining the National Salvation-led government in declaring a six-month state of emergency which will grant the President a plethora of special powers.

In a short statement, President Tobón said "With immediate affect, we are announcing the dismissal of 538 academics who have varying links with the ISCF. This included sharing ISCF-related material with students, facilitating workshops held by the organisation and actively communicating with the proscribed organisation. Their passports and degrees are revoked with immediate effect."

The individuals concerned are believed to have communicated with members of the ISCF in the past, or facilitated so-called 'workshops' on university grounds, supposedly concerning the 'New Age' movement and spirituality. Sources from the Department of the President have hinted that they may also be looking at the expulsion of students who participated of such workshops and the revocation of their degrees. The cult, led by a Hindu guru called Swami Upadhya and referred to by his followers as 'Bhagwan' or 'blessed one', is now no longer believed to operate in Carloso, having vacated its premises near Haxton in the weeks before the attack. The Ebon Metropolitan Police Service reported finding a lab and large amounts of sarin, a nerve agent often used as a chemical weapon.

Members of parliament Eric O'Neill and Maria Chambers, leaders of the Democratic Party and RAÍZ respectively, condemned the purge, labelling it as a "sham". Mr O'Neill said that "the motivation behind this purge of college employees is purely political and taking advantage of a tragic occurrence."

106 Carlosian pro-abortion groups set to be banned

Carloso is set to ban a total of 106 pro-abortion organisations operating within the country following revelations that several so-called and self-described 'pro-choice' groups shared ties with the terrorist Hindu cult which called itself the International Shiva Consciousness Foundation, and claimed responsibility for the attack on the Port of Madrigal on 3 May. Carlosian federal authorities made a number of arrests overnight, including leading officials from pro-abortion organisations who are believed to have assisted in the supply of illegal abortion pills and services from the ISCF for female patients. Under the Emergency Act 2015, President Tobón has announced an effective ban on these organisations which have claimed in the past to supply so-called 'abortion services' in other jurisdictions, as well as information relating to such services. This comes in the wake of Ebon Metropolitan Police Service personnel discovering grisly collections of abortion utensils while searching the compound once occupied by the ISCF in the suburb of Haxton, in addition to documents linking the ISCF to various pro-abortion advocacy groups operating in Carloso.

President Tobón commented that, "In the wake of the discoveries at the ISCF compound in Haxton, we can say for certain that many Carlosian pro-abortion organisations developed links with the ISCF for the execution of illegal and indeed murderous abortion services. Consequently, we are outlawing the operations of in excess of 100 pro-abortion organisations, including provincial and county branches of certain establishments, and beginning a broad federal investigation into the conduct of these groups with regard to the offences described under the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2011."

Abortion remains a serious offence under Carlosian law, with providers of such so-called 'services' liable to serve a life sentence in prison at minimum, death penalty at worst. Carlosian law fundamentally equates the offence of feticide, as recognised under the common law; and in particular hugely influenced by tort law, to that of murder, largely due to the major influence of Thomist natural law jurisprudence in Carlosian common law precedent historically. Since the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2011, an individual who commits the offence of feticide outside the jurisdiction of Carloso is liable to be stripped of their citizenship and rendered stateless, be it the mother of the deceased child or supposed 'doctor' who carried out the killing of the unborn child. An estimated 3,500 Carlosian women seek abortions in other jurisdictions every year, largely in the far more liberal and anti-natalist countries of Kesslerstaadt or Bourgougia. Under the Citizenship Act 1995, the Carlosian state is required to strip all such women of their citizenship and, to the same extent, their constitutional rights, and also bar re-entry into the country. The Carlosian government under President Tobón has been nearly absolute in this regard.

Despite attempts by governments in the past to liberalise abortion laws, recent polls have shown that Carlosians are more resistant then ever to altering the country's legislation regarding feticide, even among more liberally minded voters. According to a study by Roldán Analytics/Madrigal Times in November 2018, only 22% of Carlosians regard the country's laws as being too strict. In sharp contrast to many formerly conservative Western countries, Carlosian attitudes to abortion have grown more and more hostile as time has progressed, under the leadership of the right-wing nationalist National Salvation party. President Tobón spearheaded the reintroduction of the death penalty for providing abortion services in 2012.

Thousands gather for Madrigal 'Anti-Homopropaganda' rally

Hundreds of thousands of people have gathered in the centre of Madrigal today in what was the eighth annual 'Anti-Homopropaganda' rally. The event was organised by a coalition of various conservative, traditionalist and religious organisations, including National Salvation, the Synarchist Union, the Catholic Church in Carloso, the Presbyterian Church of Carloso and representatives from the Nifonese, Inyurstan and Riysan communities. The Madrigal Metropolitian Police Service estimated that over 550,000 people were in attendence, with the main event seeing crowds stretch all the the way from Saint Joseph's Road to Victory Square. The rally was held on the fiftieth anniversary of the infamous Stonewall riots which occurred in the United States in the summer of 1969, seen as a landmark moment for the normalisation of homosexuality in some countries. Several small groups of rainbow flag-waving pro-LGBTQ+ demonstrators were seen protesting as the crowds of people progressed through the city, but they were dwarfed by the much larger show of support for the 'Anti-Homopropaganda' event.

After marching through Madrigal, crowds heard from numerous speakers at Victory Square, including Archbishop Ezequiel Semprún, The Reverend Adam Sharp and Minister for Finance Robert Casey-Harel MP. They were also joined by Kogyokist pastor Fuma Masayuki, who spoke on behalf of the Nifonese community in Carloso. Casey-Harel praised the high turnout, declaring that "Carloso will never surrender itself to globalism and degeneracy". Elsewhere, event organisers held a no holds barred championship between captured Homofront terrorists and members of the Nifonese special forces. The penultimate fight saw famed martial arts instructor Oyama Yasutora take down five men one after another. Various other family-friendly events also took place, celebrating Carlosian culture and religion.

Internationally, many countries now observe the entire month of June as 'pride month', culminating in parades that usually take place on the 28th or 29th of June to mark the Stonewall riots. While it isn't observed by the vast majority of Carlosians, since last Saturday, police in Madrigal, Toro, Ebon and other cities have broken up at least twenty such unauthorised 'pride' parades which interrupted traffic and reportedly disgusted members of the public due to the conduct of the individuals participating in the illegal events.

Tobón condemns Palmyrion terrorist attacks

President Tobón has condemned the terrorist attacks on an 'LGBT' pride march which caused the deaths of 1,287 people, including monarch Alexander II in the Palmyrian city of Aragon. At least 9,295 others were injured. Speaking at the opening of a new military base in Secano, Tobón said that "The Government of Carloso condemns the heinous attacks committed against the innocent people who were attending the event. I pray for the repose of the souls of the late Lakán Alexander II and all those who were killed, and that their family members will be comforted during this time of mourning." The attack began when Alexander II was shot by a sniper as he delivered a speech to the gathered crowds. Shortly afterwards, dozens of gunmen began firing into the crowd and a van containing phosgene exploded, flooding the area with the deadly chemical agent. Responders managed to eliminate most of the assailants. The Department of External Affairs clarified that they did not believe that any Carlosian citizen was present in Palmyrion at the time.

However, Tobón also criticised the security arrangements for the event, saying "It appears to me that, in light of the recent spate of similiar incidents in Palmyrion, the authorities should have taken security much more seriously. I find it hard to believe they could of let such a major terrorist attack occur without prior indication or warning. If this is the case, then their intelligence and law enforcement apparatus must be criminally underresourced or severely incompetent."

According to local media, the organisation known as 'Bagong Lipunan ng Palmyria' was responsible for the attack, which targetted the event in Aragon City. In a joint press conference held by Palmyrian authorities, the 'Bagong Lipunan ng Palmyria' group was described as "neoreactionary" and "fascist", subscribing to "Christian dominion theology". It followed a string of similiar incidents which had occured earlier in this year's 'pride month', a term used internationally for the entire month of June, culminating in parades that usually take place on the 28th or 29th of June to mark the Stonewall riots in 1969, seen by many as the genesis of the 'LGBT' activist movement. On 7 June, a suicide bomber killed 24 at a pride march organised by the University of Palmyrion. A mass shooting at a pride event in Commonwealth Square on 14 June left 154 dead. On the 16 June, a prominent lesbian activist was killed when she opened an anthrax-laced letter that had been sent to her home.

The successor of the late Alexander II, his wife Elizabeth, did not comment on the attack or the death of her husband, but vowed to continue his policies and avenge his death.
