Australian Fruit Contamination Scare

What started as a contamination of a few strawberries has expanded into apples and bananas, where people have been inserting sewing needles into fruit in Queensland, distrubuted all over the country. As if our poor farmers didn't have enough to worry about with the drought and enough economic hardship because of the afformentioned drought, we now have idiots inserting sewing needles into their produce! Strawberry farmers have had to install metal dectectors to scan all strawberries before distrubuting them, hope that producers of other fruits catch up!

Police believe that they do this to instil terror into fruit eaters. It is believed that the first contamination was due to a disgruntled former employee. Well, screw you! You're not scaring me outta buying fruit. I'm gonna cut it really small, (and I suggest that you do the same), but I'm still gonna buy it. The police said that when these idiots are caught, they'll get 10 years, but I'd give them 15 years. What do think NSG, have you been scared out of buying fruit? Do you think 10 years is an adequare sentence?

A fellow Aussie here, and it's quite a weird thing to see all these cases of people sticking sharp objects into fruit. Not gonna stop me from buying or eating fruit, but I always cut up my fruit anyway so unless I get incredibly unlucky I should be fine.

As for the sentence, 10 years sounds appropriate, unless someone gets hurt.

10 years? 15 years? Why don't you just slap them on the wrist and tell them they're being naughty?

Or how about a real punishment for these psychos instead? 30 years sounds perfectly reasonable to me, oh and prevent them from ever working with food ever again. Assuming they get out before they die.

I’ve worked in the export strawberry industry here in Queensland.

Don’t eat qld strawberries please, the main reason they are in store is they’ve failed a human fecal percentage test in the last three years.

At least..

What the fuck is wrong with people, there's been cases here recently of people putting needles in public transport seats..

Over the past week, six cases of needles being planted in seats on KMB double-decker buses have left at least two passengers injured.

I don't know if the length of their sentencing really matters, at some point I'd be happy to bring the stocks back and throw vegetables and other assorted items for a week but another side is to ask why people get so alienated and angry that they're driven to do such a shitty thing.

I read a long article on someone who interviewed a bunch of mass shooters, nearly all of them spoke of alienation and anger. I fear in a world where people can hide in their rooms and interact only online that these issues will get worse.

On QI the other day they told of a hamster that was laying still against the cage for 3 days so the owner took it in to the vet to see what the problem was and turns out it had eaten a fridge magnet and was stuck against the metal frame.

How embarrassing for the hamster.

It seems like these people are at least somewhat psychopathic and/or sociopathic, and sadistic. Give them psychological help regardless, and try to figure out why.

One year I remember it being on the local news that an unknown house had been giving out candy to children (for Halloween) with a razor blade stuck in the middle. I am not completely sure which I would rather discover by ingestion, and I hope that I would never need to make that choice. But this is the first thing that makes me cringe more than/the same as (its close) the thought of dancing barefoot on machetes with the blades pointing straight up.

No cases of strangers killing or permanently injuring children this way have been proven. Commonly, the story appears in the media when a young child dies suddenly after Halloween. Medical investigations into the actual cause of death have always shown that these children did not die from eating candy given to them by strangers. However, in rare cases, adult family members have spread this story in an effort to cover up murder or accidental deaths. In other incidents, a child who has been told about poisoned candy places a dangerous object or substance in a pile of candy and pretends that it was the work of a stranger. This behavior is called the copycat effect.

Folklorists, scholars, and law enforcement experts say that these stories have been "thoroughly debunked".[2]

Because New Zealand pays a lot more for them, but part of the bilateral quarantine agreement requires periodic tests on soil, as well as treatment and other things.

So when the fecal percentage of soil test fails, they just drop them on the local market which doesn’t have the same restrictions.

And while there are growers who only supply the domestic market, they still use the same foreign labour who caused the soil test to fail. And they are less worried about in field defecation because they don’t sell to NZ.

Oh. I suppose sometimes news is fake even when it does not align with ones politics (sarcasm). It must have been the copycat effect because it showed and interviews two families who found the razor blades and showed them sticking out of the molding chocolate candy.

There's a few stories like this, that repeatedly do the rounds.. rats attacking children in playgrounds is another. More often than not a story goes out on the wires, some 70-80% of news in media is simply copied off the wires. Later investigations to show this or that wasn't actually the case - candy in Hallowe'en sweet stories tends to be cover ups for child abuse or injury - but that isn't reported and what sticks in the mind is the original story.

As media reduces the number of journalists and rely more and more on wires these stories continue.

I did a thread the other day on the town of Uranus.. but actually it's not a town, it's just a tourist destination set up by some showman - the whole news was just a marketing gimmick.

It's a real pity 'fake news' is not to do with politics per se, regardless of what some would believe, but the ease in which you can insert made up stories into the news stream.

Because it’s actually Korean labour, they sign on for a three month all costs included season where they receive a lump sum at the end, and it costs the farm about 12 bucks an hour. And all water is tested.

I wouldn’t be suprised if it’s trucks emptying septic tanks spraying paddocks with untreated ‘fertlizer’

Though as a New Zealand consumer I am happy to hear our fruit imports passed the fecal residue test and get decontaminated before sale
