Though it has some precedents in RL, on both the local and national levels, so it shouldn't really be a problem.

It's not unprecedented in the WC, even. At one point this nation renamed from "Falconwhereveryouare" to "Falcus" merely because of foreign dignitaries constantly complaining about having to type it out in full.

Edit: Actually, just this cycle Saltstead did it.

I mean we've seen nation name changes before, like the ones Falcus pointed out, but also FSSO --> Eura and New Sideburn --> Nephara also spring to mind.

And if San Regada is proposing becoming Santa Regada but still posting with San Regada, then there's also precedent for that (THE's account being Alasdair I Frosticus, but nation name The Holy Empire).

That one's potentially slightly different; the full title of the Holy Empire on its NS homepage is 'The Holy Empire of Alasdair I Frosticus'. Unusually, for RP purposes this account goes by the editable nation classification rather than the uneditable nation name; but I'm still using part of the official nation name.

But the key point is that I don't think any of us mind San Regada changing the nation name IC'ly.

Name changes in the World Cup have to come with roleplayed successor states - the KPB rank transfers over onky if it's essentially the same nation. Elves Security Forces becoming Valanora as part of a larger empire, Gregoryisgodistan having a revolution and becoming South Covello, that sort of thing.

"This Is now the correct spelling of our nation and we're updating all the signs, passports, etc" is an unusual one, to be sure, but as long as you can RP it as such then it's generally fine for the World Cup.

To clarify what Star said, although a name change isn't really a successor state, as nothing is succeeding anything, it would still be OK as it's the same nation. If it were something like Zaire/DR Congo, or Swaziland/eSwatini, where a nation just decides to change its name and nothing else, that would be OK too. Usually something other than the name changes too, as in the above examples, but it doesn't actually have to.

Sorry to my Group 3 and Group 10 peeps for the sparse activity, but the weather here has been… tempestuous, to say the least. I just want to confirm that my family and myself are safe and we have taken minimal damage, mostly fallen branches and a couple of trees falling on our outside fence, but the house has held up and no one got hurt. We’re fortunate enough to still have running water and to have our power back, but Spectrum are sure dragging their feet on restoring internet in our area… Minor detail in the end, though.

I’m still in our Discord server and making my best effort to keep everyone posted when I can take a break from tidying up the mess. Keeping some semblance of normality in what has been quite an abnormal time has really been a great help to me, so thank you all for that. :)

I feel obligated to speak in support of San(ta) Regada, given the "Successor State" shenanigans I have planned for the next few cycles. In my case there's no KPB to inherit, but if I can (shortly) have two nations both claiming to be the same nation, surely someone else can add two letters to their name without consequence.

In the event that San Regada overcomes a 10 point deficit with 4 matches to go and qualifies for the World Cup finals, they will be known as Santa Regada for the WC81 finals.

Absolutely not! You spelt it, you're stuck with it! No more name changes for you, not ever! You're stuck with the original spelling for all of eternity!

 Just kidding. Those name changes generally aren't a problem, as long as they're generally consistent acrpss the board(aka you don't use one spelling in one competition but a different spelling in another competition).

Just posting this as a PSA

If you were thinking of submitted a host bid for the Cup of Harmony it should have been submitted by around the halfway point of qualifying. There is already one bid ( Cassadaigua & Equestrian States ). With World Cup qualifying coming to a conclusion for most this evening, it should be apparent that if you have any intention of posting a competing bid it would need to be posted today, prior to the end of the qualifying campaign, in order to allow time for discussion and voting to take place.

Hey guys. We're gonna have to push back this cutoff by 24 hours. I've had a family emergency come up- there's no way I'll be able to finish grading and score tonight.

Host Announcement

Two things. These, of course, will be updated in the relevant OPs.

#1 With the schedule pushed back a day because of my own cutoff, the Playoff Schedule will change. The First Leg will be scorinated on Sunday, 9/23/2018, by FFR, while the Second Leg will be scorinated by yours truly on Tuesday, 9/25/2018. Our cutoff times will remain the same bar any announcement stating otherwise(8:00 AM EST for FFR; 10:00 PM EST for myself).

#2 With that, of course, we'll give extra time to get your sponsorships in. We'll have Sponsorships due on Wednesday, 9/26/2018, at 11:59 PM EST. 24 hours past the cutoff for the 2nd leg of the World Cup Qualification Playoffs.

Best of luck!

Host Announcement

Since neither of us anticipated the CTE (which I literally discovered just minutes before the results were posted), I feel like we need to specifically state how we're going to handle scorinating extra time and penalties for the playoffs, if needed. In that scenario, we will be utilizing the method proposed by Equestrian States and Cassadaigua in their WC67 host bid.

My cutoff time will be 8-10 AM US/Canada Eastern time on Sunday for the first leg.

The World Cup Concert Thread will be up prior to the cutoff.

Votes are underway for the CoH and WCC Presidency.
The poster of this message is probably Ko-oren or Banija as NSWC Signups is owned and operated by the World Cup Committee, bringing you the finest quality in sign-up threads for NationStates' premier football tournament since 2005.

Question in regards to the World Cup Committee -

As per 1.1.1.ii,
ii) Hosting a World Cup to its completion, which grants a nation permanent membership of the WCC. However, that user may only exercise their privileges as a WCC member as long as one of their nations has participated in the most recent World Cup.

Are we counting the "most recent World Cup" as the latest run to completion (i.e. 80) or the one currently in progress (i.e. 81)? As the latter would technically give me a vote.

'Most recent' being a completed one, so WC80.

Apologies for the lack of Holy Empire RPs over the last few days of qualifying; I've been a little under the weather.

I hope to be back on my feet again in time for the finals.
