These are somewhat common in more conservative school districts and private schools, in part because of the way the Freneq educational system works. Upon graduating the fifth grade, all Freneq students must go to some sort of public or private boarding school, so these balls serve as going-away parties for the students. Thus, the pledge to “keep in touch” is very important in these balls.

Many outsiders still see these modified versions as creepy as the more conventional versions, if not more so.

We don't have that here in the Empire, however, it sounds like a perversion of the Débutante Ball where teenagers, usually girls, come of age and are considered to be adults, and therefore old enough to marry to secure a deal between noble houses, it was never too popular among the middle class, and even some nobility moved from. Débutante presentations still happen at some elite balls, but not as much as they used to, some see it as a stuffy holdover when mares and women were seen as pawns in political games to secure alliances between royalty.

However, they wouldn't pledge to their fathers as the expectation was to marry, and therefore preservation of virginity was not a priority, traditionally speaking, quite the opposite rather, since with marriage between royalty and nobility, she was expected to bear heirs to secure the legacy of a dynasty.

Other balls happen at the end of school years to celebrate the end of education and extol the virtues of friendship. We are proud of the ball tradition, but we would never enforce a person to swear off sex at one.

Selian culture, both northern and southern, is historically and currently notable for its emphasis on sexual purity, particularly in women. Sexuality is best exercised within the marriage, and the act of bedding a free citizen woman who is the wife or daughter of a citizen is borderline criminal.

Chastity, virtue, and piety are greatly honoured in women, and thus whilst the concept of virignity until marriage, and indeed the father's role in organising the marriage, is readily accepted, there is no Selian equivalent to a purity ball and the event is considered odd.

The Ephyral, nor any other Selian state or people, have ever considered the need for a specific ceremony to relinquish authority to the father as the father always possessed it.

It is not known to be practised by any demographic, ethnic or religious, within the Freehold's vast expanse, and therefore is not subject to any form of prohibition.

The coming of age landmark for a woman is quite varied. By religious interpretation, the gods make a girl ready for marriage at the point of her menarche, her first menstruation, delaying it for some girls and hastening it for others. This creates a mean average of fourteen years. Typically however, the earliest age for marriage is recognised at sixteen, when such females become what is considered a woman grown. With this in mind, the majority of women are not married until the age of around nineteen.

The act of marriage itself is the full entry into womanhood, as it denotes her role as a wife and later a mother, the principle role of free women living in the Freehold.

However, it is the father who organises the suitors and the marriage, and it is he who possesses this authority from the start. There is no symbolic act to confer upon him the ability to safeguard her virginity. It is part of the father's responsibility to defend the virtue and honour of his daughters.

However amongst males is purity very highly valued and virginity amongst men is highly celebrated.

While purity balls are usually very rare events due to the speed of maturation (less than a day) and time it takes to get married off, (about a day) elements of abstinence until marriage are often observed in parties that occur prior to the exchange of vows at weddings.
