Immediately after Earth’s nuclear holocaust, the majority of the developed world, sentient creatures and physical structures alike, evaporated or incinerated in an instant. The Americas, Eurasia, and large swaths of Africa were thoroughly demolished. Japan, Oceania, and the Caribbean were submerged by tsunamis or destroyed in the blight of nuclear fallout. A catastrophic nuclear winter persisted for centuries. Numerous small pockets of people, residing in the more farflung regions of the world, somehow managed to miraculously survive deep inside caverns and tunnels. Sadly, given the absence of available resources, the very old, the very young, and the physically and intellectually disabled were among the first to perish. The heroic efforts undertaken to save their lives were generally unsuccessful. We damn humans caused this devastation in the first place.
Over a period persisting for hundreds upon hundreds of years, many communities discovered one another. Even those groups which descended from locations speaking the same languages often had difficulties communicating. The separation had simply continued too long. Anyway, given human ingenuity, that obstacle was eventually overcome. Records and artifacts of the pre–apocalyptic period were slowly but surely found. Some were largely destroyed beyond recognition, but, gratefully, a few were still reasonably intact. They were taken as rough guidelines, as the process of building a new civilization slowly began. This time, however, capitalism and imperialism, the twin causes of the apocalypse, were repudiated in favor of Rosa’s democratic libertarian communism. A new age, the initiation of a protracted and tangled journey, had, at long last, commenced.
Thousands of years then transpired post–apocalypse (PO), and first contact with extraterrestrials was ultimately made. Eventually, The United Federation of Libertarian Communist Planets was founded. We are currently, as this essay is being written, still in the age prior to the dawn of the apocalypse. Preparations for the end of days can, possibly, be made.
