Cat owners are incredibly entitled. New Zealanders in general are enormously entitled. The combination has proven disastrous.

Compare the restrictions placed on dogs, which are far less dangerous to wildlife as a result, to those placed on cats. Not even close.

Banning cats is a necessary step to move forwards. A bit like choosing a price you know you won't get to make sure you do get the lowest possible price when haggling.

There is no right-wing, property-rights based argument for cats either... they're the leading cause of property rights violations.

Omaui is a tiny little settlement at the wrong end of the South Island (just a little bit north of Bluff, famous for it's oysters), but the wish to ban cats comes from Environment Southland which is a organ of the regional council.

And it makes a lot of sense. The region is home to a lot of native bush and coastal areas, and New Zealand has a lot of birds that nest on the ground, including penguins. Cats are one of the many, many threats to New Zealand's birds and to reduce their numbers is a good thing. It wasn't that long ago that a philathropist by the name of Gareth Morgan (who subsequently formed his own political party in the 2017 election and then figured out like acting like a dick to your own party members didn't bode well for political success) suggested banning all cats from New Zealand.

archispirostreptus gigas makes an acceptable alternative for people who want the cuddliness, quietness, and cute faces without the ecological impact.

I can't imagine New Zealand, which likely has vastly more stringent biosecurity measures than the US, would let these in.

captive-bred a. gigas don't have the mites, so if anybody there has bred captive ones before they were banned, they should still be perfectly legal. it's not the only option - there are native procyliosoma pedes which are even cuter and cuddlier.
