Baseball in your nation

Postby Carena » Thu Aug 30, 2018 10:01 pm

Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport that originates in the northeastern United States. Developing from earlier English bat-and-ball games like rounders, baseball began to resemble the modern game in the 1840's when the New York Knickerbockers were formed and played the first game of modern baseball. The sport quickly expanded outside of the American northeast, becoming popular all across the country, eventually finding itself as quintessential Americana- earning the moniker "America's Pasttime". However, its growth was not limited to the US, and the sport would also find immense popularity in Central America, the Caribbean, Japan, and South Korea among others.

Is baseball played at all in your nation? And if it is, how popular is it? Is there any organized league of sorts, or special rules that differentiate the game from other forms of baseball?

In Carena, baseball remains one of the oldest played sports. Major League Baseball, in fact, is the oldest sports league in the world, with the National League being founded in 1877. There are many different leagues around Carena, but the MLB remains the richest and most prestigious league in the world. In order to speed up the game, baseball in 2203 looks slightly different from modern baseball, such as only allowing 2 throws to a base when a runner is on it, rapid pitcher substitution via phone, and only allowing hitters 1 time out when at bat. Cybernetics, despite being pervasive in Carenian society, are strictly regulated in pro baseball (and pro sports in general). Any cybernetic implants given to players cannot give them a special athletic advantage over other players. Additionally, any clones with enhanced genetics are barred from playing in human leagues.

Baseball is considered Gandoor's national sport and has been played in our nation since the 1870s, with the first professional league being established in 1892.

The current professional league in our nation, the Gandoor Pro-Baseball League, was established in 1919 and currently has twenty four teams (twelve for both the east and west divisions). The most successful, and popular, team are the Osaka Dragons, one of the founding members of the GPBL, who have won twenty-four Gandoorese National Baseball Championships and have participated in forty-two.

The national championship for baseball, the aforementioned Gandoorese National Baseball Championship, was first held in 1913 and is considered the most important sporting event in our nation and, in the modern day, typically receives an average audience score on television of between 60 and 75%. Of slight interesting note, despite the inaugural championship occurring in 1913, the second championship did not occur until 1919. It was also skipped from 1940 until 1951 and from 1953 until 1957.

Baseball is not a game that is played in Great Nortend. Similar games that are played, however, are rounders, criquet and whelts. Whilst the first two games are fairly well-known, whelts is a unique game of Nortan origin.

It is played with a whelting pale, which is a long, polished plank of timber a yard and a half long, with two handles on the back, used by the paleman, painted with a red end and a white end. Two balls are used, one a red leather-bound ball and the other a white wooden ball. The paleman is required to 'run the cloister', which is a strip on the ground on which five 'beds' emanate, traditionally planted with various plants, and terminate in wickets which increase in height. Behind the wickets, fieldsmen and batsmen, who carry long canes, are placed strategically to try and catch or hit the ball. If they do catch or hit it, the paleman is 'out'.

In each 'run', the paleman runs from the 'cross', a wooden post in the ground surmounted by a cross, to the 'T' where the cloister meets a 'bed', hits the ball over his head, aiming for the corresponding wicket, and runs back before the batsmen and fieldsmen walk the ball to the crosskeeper lest he should be 'caught' and thus 'out'. They may not run and must walk.

The aim of the game is to knock bails off wickets as the paleman using the balls bowled by the bowlsman with the proviso that red ball may only hit red side and vice versa. In front of each wicket there is traditionally planted a rose bush of white or red flowers, depending on the ball which must be used to hit it. The wickets increase in distance as the palesman goes up the cloister, with the score depending on the number of runs made and the number of bails hit. The main form of scoring is the number of bails. The numbered bed which the paleman ran up to is also considered, with a value of 1/12 of one bail knocked down. Thus, running to the second 'bed' gives one 'run'. A full run of the cloister yields 12 'runs', or 1 'bail' equivalent. Scores are quoted in terms of shillings and pence, where one bail is one shilling and one run one pence. Thus, bails are 'carried' over to the shillings if there are more than 12. Teams are said to win if they have more bails and runs put together.

There are teams of twelve-a-side, with an umpire known as the master. One man from the paling side pales at a time, with two men in the other side bowling in turn, four men batting and four men fielding. It originated in the Chepingstow Cathedral School and is well played by many people.

There is a Knessian Baseball League, which receives government subsidies. It has been seen as the most entertaining sport for quite some time. It is one of our leader's favorite things to watch.

Is an minoritary, mostly amateur, sport with little popularity and support. The baseball league is composed only by 4 semiprofessional senior teams and 4 amateur ones.

Football (soccer) is the most popular team sport, followed by basketball, Rugby and Hockey.

Its THE unofficial national sport and we hold over 22 victories in the former Baseball World Cup, now we rival Japan in the World Baseball Classic. Many professional leagues from around provinces, clubs and age-based groups exist and there's also a women's league.

Baseball is almost its own religion in North Saitama. North Saitama participates in Nippon Professional Baseball (which survived the fracturing of Japan after World War II), and has one professional team in this league: the Saitama Seibu Lions.

In addition to this, local leagues also exist. Kita-Saitama Minor League has 19 teams across North Saitama, plus one in Gunma. Youth Leagues also exist, and North Saitama frequently sends Little league teams to Williamsport for the Little League World Series.

On a smaller level than that, both children and adults play ball in their free time, with Beer League teams being a staple of the workplace.

We tried playing it for a while, but it didn't work out.

- Every batter used his military-grade weapons-aiming system to hit the ball, so misses only happened when that system was faulty.
- A ball, well-struck by the bat of a full-sized Decepticon, is propelled for approximately 2 miles, so every hit in any sort of restricted area (such as a stadium or ball field) was a home run.
- In areas with unrestricted space, such as plains areas of Earth, outfielders would have to transform and fly after these balls to try to catch them. This often led to air crashes, both from outfielders flying into each other and from them being too low when they transformed back into robot mode to make the catch.

Due to these and similar problems, it just wasn't fun for us and it eventually died out.

Baseball hasn't been as popular in our timeline as in OTL America. It's pretty much a regional sport like Hockey, and only has a significant fanbase in New England, New York, and to a lesser extent, the Midwest. It's commonly considered to be a dying sport, with most fans being middle aged and elderly white people. Soccer replaced it as one of our three main sports in the 1970s.

It's a relatively obscure sport. Association Football is the most popular sport, and baseball has little to no following. Those who play baseball are from countries with a strong tradition of it, like the United States, Canada, Cuba, Mexico, and Japan, or live in the West Indies territory, which represents itself in any baseball international matches, due to a lack of sufficient interest from the European mainland. Even Hockey and Basketball get way more attention.

Baseball won't be our national pastime anytime soon, because that spot is already taken, by Football, or Soccer, as most baseball players would call it.

Baseball is a small sport in Osweya. We do have a professional baseball league, although salaries are generally dwarfed by more popular sports like Association Football and even Osweyan Rugby. Our professional league has eight teams, with the largest two (Casteton Rangers and Telston BC) winning the majority of championships between them. Baseball is a summer sport, with the season beginning in late May and ending in mid-August; attendances are boosted somewhat thanks to the sport not competing with football and rugby too much during this time, with matches in the top league drawing an average crowd of 4,505 last season.

Due to our nation's history and predecessor states, baseball is extremely popular in Aikoland. At present, we have three professional leagues, each of whom play exclusively in one of our constituent countries and all predate the establishment of Aikoland in 1995. The three professional leagues are: Nippon Professional Baseball (plays in Japan, established in 1936 as the Japanese Baseball League, reorganized and renamed to Nippon Professional Baseball in 1950), Hanguk Baseball League (plays in Korea, established in 1982 as Korea Baseball Organization, renamed to Hanguk Baseball League in 2005, and Taiwan Professional Baseball League (plays in Taiwan, established in 1989 as Chinese Professional Baseball League, renamed to Taiwan Professional Baseball League in 2005)

Despite each league being being based in a different country, there are no restrictions regarding players from other countries that are part of Aikoland playing for a league not from their home country. However, teams in all three leagues may not have more than five players of non-Aikoland birth at any one time.

In addition, despite there being three separate leagues, there is only one championship - the Aikoland National Baseball Championships, which see the top three teams from each league participating in playoffs which culminate in the top two teams overall facing each other in a series wherein the first team to win four games becomes Aikoland National Baseball Champions. During the Championships, it is very common to see people flying pre-Aikoland flags of Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, depending on which country they support.
