South American Politics Megathread
Original Version
Nuestro Norte es el Sur / Nosso Norte é o Sul / Our North is the South
Image

So, I've been noticing the blatant flood of news that comes straight out of South America -- especially under the current conditions of Brazilian elections, the Venezuelan crisis, the newfound Argentinian government scandal, as well as several minor issues that pop up every once in a while under a continent of more than 400 million people -- yet that is usually either ignored on NSG, or scattered among several small threads. So on an attempt to give more relevance to the stuff that happens down here, here it goes the first South American Politics Megathread :D

TG me for suggestions, polls and also possible partnerships between this thread and your site, server, discord, flying spaghetti dog, whatever :P

Relevant/advised talking topics:

  • South American politics
  • South American news
  • South American economic issues
  • Debates on current events (surely not a lack of those)
  • South American historical events and their effect on the current state of things

Poll Results:

So, Bolsonaro has apparently defended the implementation of UBI in Brazil:
"We intend to establish a minimum income for all Brazilian families. All these ideas, including Bolsa Familia, are inspired by liberal thinkers, such as Milton Friedman, who advocated for the Negative Income Tax. We propose the modernization of Bolsa Familia and the Salary Bonus Program, with advantages for the beneficiaries. Let's make it clear: our goal is to guarantee, to each Brazilian, an equal income or higher than what is currently paid by Bolsa Família." (p. 63)

Not as fucked as Venezuela?

Perhaps that’s too optimistic.

It's not quite Venezuela yet. Unlike their northern neighbour, Brazil has a fairly decent and independent (and less corrupt) judiciary. It could change, given that the country is still grappling with ordinary corruption and spiking crime (63,000 Brazilians were murdered in 2017, a new record).

Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

Guyana and Suriname are not even using the Brazilians tv digital system. Neither is Colombia which will be using the European system. All others are using Brazils tv digital system which is a Brazilian version of the Japanese system.

We have a decent collective memory, but now and then we have to kick ourselves in the head a bit to remember why we stopped applying certain policies.

Can't recall the name of the article, but a few months ago I was reading about how a lack of collective memory is often considered the problem of Argentine in particular.
