QNSG: Can conspiracy silliness be ordinally ranked?

Postby Yagon » Wed Aug 08, 2018 7:31 pm

When I was a boy, there were conspiracy theories that my parents warned me about.

The hippies claimed the oil companies were corrupting the government and causing wars to make profit, and our industrial trend would damage the Earth quite severely.

Those worrisome black radicals claimed that the government was targeting their communities by structuring the war on drugs to strike minority communities especially hard. They claimed minorities were systematically disadvantaged in education, healthcare, housing, and the criminal justice system.

The crazy hairy-armpit feminists women said there was tremendous unreported abuse of women at all social economic levels.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand my parents were full of shit. All that shit turned out real. But it was told me as a strange and unacceptable arrangement of beliefs.

I tell you now that the book Lexicon can actually teach you something about language and people, and if you read it while upside down underwater and in the dark, it can connect you to a universe where all that shit is just as real. By telling you that, I conceptually inch your qualia-stream closer to that universe, and for some non-zero percentage of those reading this thread.....you are in that universe.

So imagine a conspiracy theory that several NSGeneralites have learned this, and are in fact by various means in control of the world in various ways. The joke, the cosmic joke that some god might make real just to see what it would like, is that the community formed from a book called Jennifer Government in a game about really controlling the world is the actual forum containing the entities that controls the world.

The World Assembly is more powerful than the United Nations. The petty veiled hostilities and factionalisms are the actual conflict and tensions of our world, and the bullshit show that we call geopolitics is just a corrupted material demiurge seeking to emulate the True Conflict, which happens in NS General.

Putin doesn't make a move until he knows what Greed and Death wants done. The utility companies in Luxembourg answer directly to Bombadii. Gallo completely controls the American IRS. Nanatsu holds the Japanese secret anthropomorphic robot-figherjet squadron in the palm of her hand like a phone.

The mods struggle to keep control. (I won't name the DEATED player, but he/she had Venezuela...) They prevent nuclear war by removing those who take the conflict too far, like the Minutemen in 100 Bullets, or Liam Neeson in Batman.

The only way to destroy the power of the Mods would be to collapse the real world so the technical and legal means by which the Mods control the RealTimeNSG universe, which require a functioning global high-tech human civilization. Interrupt that, and you stop the mods...

Over course, in their madness, these conspirators don't realize that it would also destroy the forum itself. They would win by destroying the universe, just like in <<insert culturally recognizable sci-fi reference here>>.

And maybe somewhere in the multi-verse, not impossibly even where you're reading this, this is actually the case.

Thread topic: Is that silliness any sillier than Q Anon? If there was a silliness level 5 for what I just wrote, where does Q Anon sit on that scale? Is there a way to quantify absurdity?

My opinion: No, it really isn't. It's even more plausibly, thankfully.

Further thread topic: What does it say that Q Anon is on the radar now?

My opinion: Not necessarily anything terminal, (in before the inevitable "well, we believed in Thor and Jesus and L.Ron Hubbard, so, you know....."), but it does seem the silliness is growing.

Does...does no one else see it growing?

Well, Trump announced Space Force not too long ago, so maybe.

If the board doesn't get kicked over by...you know...them.

The plural of Bombadil is indeed Bombadii.. and yes we're multiplying..

I'd say there's a few factors in all this:

1. The rise of opinion media.. opinion used to really be isolated to the Editorial of media, but through the 80's, breaking of unions, tabloidisation of media.. we had celebrity Opinion columnists where 'opinion' now forms the major part of any media. This rapidly became a race to the bottom fuelled by having to fill 24 hour news and then online media. Everything is opinion now..
2. The fuel of digital - the water cooler is no longer where such opinion is discussed and fuelled.. it's online.. where a lie could circle the world before the truth had time to put on its shoes the lie can now envelop the world, burrow into niches and make its way into full political discourse. Communities grow, build and amplify opinion exponentially
3. The price of content - alongside that the price of content is nothing, you don't need a printing press and distribution to get information out.. any of us can build a website, make a video, doctor a photo, discover crap sources..
4. Algorithmic gaming - fake news started as purposeful attention grabbers to drive advertising revenue.. but algorithms don't assess quality so much as quantity, less should you read this and are you likely to read this..

Snap it all together and you can create your own little conspiracy theory on anything you want - I'm no longer surprised even in parodying something to later Google and find a serious community on that parody. The volume starts to bring it into the mainstream, not of an individual conspiracy but of the whole volume of conspiracy theories and bullshit out there.

I was an advocate back in the early days of the Internet of let it all hang, the truth will out, an evolution of user intelligence in sorting the wheat from the chaff.. I'm not convinced by my younger self.. I don't think I factored in decreasing attention spans.
Eldest, that's what I am...Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn...he knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless — before the Dark Lord came from Outside..

Is it just attention spans? Was there a test in all this?

Discernment is prey to many predators, from the cultural to the neurological. To find the kind of truth that the universe responds to favorably (instead of your ego responding favorably), you must be willing to look at what actually happens, develop an explanation, and then be willing to challenge and refine and eventually abandon that explanation for something better. You have to be willing to not only consider that you're wrong, but ultimately assume that you are until thoroughly investigated otherwise.

Few of us (a might few, but few) are good at that.

Was that why we're about to fall off the wrong side of the evolutionary tightrope?

I'm currently reading Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari, he does lay out an argument that we're on an evolutionary tightrope, that our primal requirements evolved over time are a real problem.. a need to consume in a post-scarcity world, a curiosity to tinker with things we cannot fathom the consequences of, a desire to reduce attention for difficult things..

Few of us (a might few, but few) are good at that.

..and that disparity will widen, go back to Kurzweil and the like and the theory is that the speed of technological change will create a few 'those who can' and a lot of 'those who can't'. Anyone railing at the morality of augmentation, genetic engineering and etc., will simply be superfluous to requirements.

Let the masses have their reality TV, their conspiracy theories and their fatuous politicians and political systems.. they'll be irrelevant to the progress of the elite.

Pretty sure you and I are not included in that few.

Then maybe that's the test. Those techno-lord elites...if they are ultimately as angels, they will take us all to Heaven. If they're demons, they'll cast us into oblivion. At the apex of our intelligence and power, what are we?

We shall observe it emerge from the the ocean of uncollapsed probaility waves into a discrete outcome of judgement.

We are Schrodinger's Soul, and in some branch something like us will go on, and in others it won't.

Do you suppose information can pass between multiverses, perhaps as unrecognized noise in quantum computing processes, information from "Somehow Else", and the regions of light seek to invade and redeem those of darkness, and vice versa, and they plant little seeds of themselves into the other, and it spins around like a yin yang through unending ever expanding cycles?

Let us be angels in this one, and go to rescue the others, as we might like to have been rescued. Let us charge as light against the darkness and be undaunted that we are both endless. Let us dance, in a Chiaroscuro of every possibility imagined.

I hope I see you again, Bombadil, and I'll wear an obnoxiously patterned blazer so you'll know me, and we'll drink and remember this "Time"...

May our drink be a bowl of the finest Ayahuasca.

It's been a long time since I last plied myself with acid or drank a healthy cup of mushroom tea but I rather think it's about time I indulged once more to break the calcification of thoughts as I age.

LSD makes the brain more “complete”, scientists have claimed in a pioneering and controversial new study.

The drug breaks down the parts of the brain that usually separate different functions, like vision and movement, creating a more “integrated or unified brain”, the researchers claim. They also found that people who are having drug-induced hallucinations “see” with various other parts of their brain, not just the visual cortex that is active in normal vision.

"Normally our brain consists of independent networks that perform separate specialised functions, such as vision, movement and hearing - as well as more complex things like attention,” said Robin Carhart-Harris, who led the research and is the first scientist in 40 years to test LSD on humans, in a statement. “However, under LSD the separateness of these networks breaks down and instead you see a more integrated or unified brain.

"Our results suggest that this effect underlies the profound altered state of consciousness that people often describe during an LSD experience. It is also related to what people sometimes call 'ego-dissolution', which means the normal sense of self is broken down and replaced by a sense of reconnection with themselves, others and the natural world.

Watch out for "them". I don't know why they want to kick over the table. I don't know if they're like Kerghan in Arcanum or what the fuck they're doing this for, but they're real (in some universe, maybe this one for all I know).

In looking for another article that was kind of explaining the same thing.. that the noise of Qanon doesn't necessarily translate into belief in Qanon.. I found this better study..

We were able to glean characteristics of this community by writing a computer program to analyze every single user who has commented on /r/greatawakening. From there, we looked at what other subreddits outside of /r/greatawakening these users participate in.

We found that most participants are relatively casual conspiracy theorists. Their interest in /r/greatawakening largely comes from their enthusiastic support for Trump. (There’s also a handful of Bernie Sanders supporters mixed in.) Their interests coalesce around things like video games, cryptocurrency, men’s rights, and martial arts. Although Reddit doesn’t ask for demographic data, it’s not a reach to say they are predominantly white men.

But here’s the kicker: An astoundingly small number of people produce the majority of the content. About 200 users account for a quarter of the forum’s comments. These people are clearly conspiracy theorists who believe they are investigators unearthing the truth, and they spend almost all their time on Reddit investigating these theories.

Another 700 users account for the next quarter of comments. The user we followed at the top of this story is among these people. They are active in /r/greatawakening but also spend time on other subreddits.

Nearly everyone else in the subreddit — the 11,000 commenters and 42,000 lurkers — are just along for the ride.

Those are in a way comforting numbers.

I am embarassed being someone who passes for white generally that "video games, cryptocurrency, men's rights, and martial arts" implies white men, but I'd confess to believing the connection.

Anissimov, with his weird synthesis of 19th-century racist pseudoscience and fantastical futurism, is a Dark Transhumanist par excellence. In a 2013 interview, he outlined how the cultural ingraining of the notion that we’re all created equal left us unprepared for “a future of technologically enhanced beings.” There are, he insists, already significant disparities in intelligence between existing races. Transhuman technologies, he says, would mean situations in which “people could be lording over one another in a way that was never possible before in history.” It’s pretty clear that Anissimov sees nothing to fear in such a future, confident as he is that it will be people like him doing the lording. Despite being approvingly quoted in Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Near, Anissimov is these days something of a pariah from the transhumanist movement. But it is worth asking whether his specific mutation of transhumanist thinking is troubling not just because of its extremist right-wing implications, but because it magnifies illiberal, radically elitist tendencies that are inherent in transhumanism itself. Although its intellectual and spiritual roots can be traced back as far as the gnostics, transhumanism is a fever dream of contemporary technocapitalism, and it is naïve to suppose that the technological enhancements it conjures would do anything but exacerbate already existing social inequalities.

..coalesced into this.. http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/20 ... right.html

The alt-right — or the new right, if you prefer to sound more like Tom Wolfe than Kurt Cobain, or the radical right, to properly acknowledge its break from mainstream conservatism — is a coalition comprised of movements like neo-reaction, certain strands of libertarianism, tech triumphalism, and even the extreme-populist wing of the Republican Party.

But to approach the big messy tent of the new retrograde right — the international brigade of nativist-nationalists, tech-savvy anti-globalists, the porn-loving gender traditionalists — as primarily a political movement is to wildly underestimate its scope. Reactionary energy helped deliver all three branches of government to a Republican Party in the grips of an alt-right-curious anti-PC bomb-thrower the faithful called their “god-emperor” (or at least helped him along with last year’s affirmative action for white people, a.k.a. the Electoral College). But at no point during the campaign, even, could you have mistaken the unruly energy on the right for anything so organized as a party or as purposeful as a protest movement. It was — and is — a counterculture. One formed in the spirit of opposition to everything the existing Establishment stood for: globalist, technocratic liberal elitism. The amazing thing is, in November, for the first time in American electoral history, the counterculture won everything.

Eldest, that's what I am...Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn...he knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless — before the Dark Lord came from Outside..
