STAFF
Manager: Anatolmirs Paznerk - Age 54
Assistant: Naznas Vulnerk - Age 42

After a rather successful season at the helm of Lidvas Alnan FK, Anatolmirs Paznerk has been asked to take over the national team. He is a rich man with enough free time to manage both a local club and the national team. His football knowledge is fine, but he's nowhere near an actual professional manager. His assistant, Naznas Vulnerk, is actually his nephew and doesn't know more about football than Joe at the pub watching the games.

GOALKEEPERS
#1 - Znonan Duzkamo - GK - Age 33 - Lidvas Alnan FK [C]
#12 - Amintirs Musnalmas - GK - Age 28 - Kerezkes AK
#23 - Talamong Meheznanis - GK - Age 29 - Roznazkaros FK

Znonan Duzkamo is the best Miznani goalkeeper around. That may admittedly not mean much, but he's still considerably good, and a great captain to boot. He's perhaps Lidvas Alnan's biggest asset, so it's no surprise Paznerk has chosen him for the role of captain. In the bench, Amintirs Musnalmas turns out for current champions Kerezkes, so he's not too shabby a replacement. Talamong Meheznanis is a third goalkeeper, so he's ok but irrelevant.

DEFENDERS
#2 - Tusvarzn Vuladeng - CB - Age 31 - Kerezkes AK
#3 - Nunalok zi Pavnanes - CB - Age 23 - Mazkang no zi Palang
#4 - Luhimirs Ruriznanis - LB - Age 25 - Kerezkes AK
#6 - Rurn Dolmus - RB - Age 30 - Lidvas Alnan FK

#14 - Inkamirs Vulnasnang - LB - Age 28 - Lidvas Alnan FK
#15 - Dulmirs Lovitar - CB - Age 29 - Nuzugnazka no zi Palang
#16 - Bazkan Vulnang - CB - Age 33 - Roznazkaros FK
#19 - Invirs Rurnerk - RB - Age 27 - Znaruskas Leonis AK

The Miznani defense is nothing spectacular, but it does have some players that could aspire to be professionals in better leagues at some point in their careers. Tusvarzn Vuladeng's the best defender in the nation. Both tall and fast, as well as good at marking, he's one of the few professional footballers in the nation. His partner centreback will be young talent Nunalok zi Pavnanes. Many expect zi Pavnanes to become an even better player than Vuladeng. For now, they make a pretty solid defensive pair. On the left flank Luhimirs Ruriznanis is a fullback that is capable defensively and has a bit of offensive flair that he puts to use when the team is in a pinch. Rightback Rurn Dolmus is boring and unimpressive, but there weren't any better rightbacks. The bench is filled with players with roughly the same lack of talent.

MIDFIELDERS
#5 - Zugaznas zi Mileng - CM - Age 19 - Znaruskas Leonis AK
#7 - Eheng Tusvarznerk - LM - Age 25 - Kerezkes AK
#8 - Rurkanong Eheneznas - RM - Age 27 - Mazkang no zi Palang
#10 - Lorkalunita Znorskela - OM - Age 25 - Kerezkes AK [VC]

#13 - Rasazn Salstarz - LM - Age 24 - Sozkinis FK
#17 - Palok Limsamitar - RM - Age 26 - Sozkinis FK
#18 - Anunita Dunaznerk - OM - Age 28 - Lidvas Alnan FK
#20 - Mortamaznirs Palkaznerk - CM - Age 30 - Znaruskas Leonis AK

The middle of the park is where Miznan shines the most. All four starters are among the best players in the team. Centre midfielder Zugaznas zi Mileng is the most promising young talent in the country. It's astonishing just how complete he is for a player his age. He is the second-best player in the team. Left midfielder Eheng Tusvarznerk is a pacey winger that relies on his pace to put in lots of dangerous crosses for the strikers. He's also got an impressive workrate. On the opposite flank, Rurkanong Eheneznas is a less pacey, more physical version of him with roughly the same talent. Finally, we have Lorkalunita Znorskela in offensive midfield. Clearly the best player in the team, Znorskela can pass, dribble and score. His offensive repertoire is simply unmatched in Miznan. The bench has two young talented wingers in Rasazn Salstarz and Palok Limsamitar, while Anunita Dunaznerk and Mortamaznirs Palkaznerk are decent replacements for the ones ahead of them, while admittedly not really close to their level.

STRIKERS
#9 - Polinom Duznis - ST - Age 29 - Kerezkes AK
#11 - Ladvas Zneherk - ST - Age 27 - Sozkinis FK

#21 - Keznan Merkerk - ST - Age 20 - Znaruskas Leonis AK
#22 - Miloznen Polovnis - ST - Age 28 - Mazkang no zi Palang

Up front, Ladvas Zneherk is a striker that has got speed and good finishing. He is good, yes, but not all that good. Polinom Duznis is much better at pretty much everything; he's got speed, good finishing, height, dribbling skills and a lot of strength. A goal machine... or, at least, the closest a Miznani player can get to a goal machine. Polinom also has great understanding with club teammate Znorskela, which will make him all the more dangerous. In the bench, Miloznen Polovnis is not very notable. Keznan Merker looks like a possible future Polinom Duznis, but it's a bit too early to tell. He's good enough to challenged Zneherk for his starting spot, though, so watch out.

Footsoccer: Team Krenorus Heads for Baptism of Fire as Arrowson's Son is Born
Some say this will help unite our divided nation

By Ouinstonne Le'Allemand and Jean De'Pommevaleur

New London, Krenorus - Today, Krenorus' Football - Footsoccer to us - Team has gone up into the skies as the jet they are on heads to Semarland for the B.O.F. Cup being hosted by said country along with Farfadillis. The Eagle-Eyed Fighters' Manager, Gerald Barbs, said in a pre-flight interview that he was confident Krenorus' team would be able to make it to the Round of Sixteen. 'I also wish to let you know that we are extremely joyful to congratulate one of our most accurate goallers - Krenorussian slang for goal-scorer - Ash Arrowson for having his first son, Everett Silas Jasper Arrowson,' he said to the sound of clapping. After that, Arrowson was given a question by our own Maximillian Virfortis on whether his son would be watching him play. 'I talked with the doctor about having a telly-screen installed for the lad,' he joked to laughs all around. Krenorussians are looking up to the Baptism of Fire. This comes after Krenorus was not able to make it into the Round of Sixteen in the Hockey World Cup.

Krenorussians fans lined up to say farewell to the National Team when they got on their jet. This night, most Krenorussians will be taking airlines to Semarland to watch the B.O.F. - However, some are saving up to watch the World Cup and will watch the Baptism of Fire from home. Fans shouted, 'Go Eagle-Eyed Fighters!' while the Krenorussian team waved as the jet took off. Now, they're going to their destination, to win glory for Krenorus! This is a time to unite as a nation when we are so divided by politics and culture. Come! For Krenorus!

Krenorussian analysts predict that Krenorus will win their first match! How great for us. However, the Dominion's Fighters will face tough competition from other teams. But we've received great hopes that the Krenorus' team will be able to win us this Baptism!

Injure Players: Yes (minor injuries)
Godmod Injury Events: No (if it can't happen in the World Cup, can't happen to my team)

Shofercia's League System consists of 80 teams, 20 in the Premiership, and 20 for each of the Division 1-3. But like any major soccer league, we have the golden teams:

River City Raptors - due to Konovalenko's superb performance in goal, the team came in first. The team is based in a major commercial center, and the fans are truly passionate. The stadium is always full, and the public is demanding that it be expanded yet again.

Invention Golazos - they play in the Capital City of Invention, and were it not for that damn salary cap, would've bought most of the players. They came in second, but won the Open Cup.

Port City Storm - a major team in the port city, this is viewed as Shofercia's coastal team. They came in third, and round out the trio. Think of them as Barca, Real Madrid, and Altetico Madrid.

Zhatai Ballers - Shofercia is a very cosmopolitan place, and the ballers are a team that's supported by Shofercia's immigrant community. Everyone in Shofercia speaks Shofercian, so language is not an issue, but some of the Ballers' celebration and culture are a bit on the wild side, and Greg Burki is the embodiment of that. However, these are usually clean, (if a tad weird,) and admired by most Shofercians. When they came in fourth, quite a few people, immigrants and natives alike, cheered. Style of play? Seville.

Castle City Hounds - came in fifth, much to their chagrin. They're the classic, old city team, proud of their roots, and their culture. Their city is over a thousand years old, one of the oldest in Shofercia. There's always next season, and the World Cup!

Bratsk Boys - Bratsk, the first development team to come in sixth. They're on the lower side of the salary cap, and their players are ecstatic to be on the national team, even as subs.

About the country;

Shofercia is a very wealthy, educated nation, that spends at least third of its GDP on education and research. The results are phenomenal. No one is hungry, or poor, or homeless. Most of the power comes from Solar Panels, although some of the cities have advanced power generators, like the City of Invention, which is powered by harnessed geothermal energy from a volcano. The country has a stellar public transportation system, and numerous parks; as a result the population is quite healthy.

Since most of the causes of human aggression are external in Shofercia, and humans are aggressive and competitive creatures, the public turns their aggression and intensity to sports. Every city, no matter how small, has at least a few sports teams. When your team thrives, it's a massive city holiday. The country has both, winter and summer sports, and association football is the most popular summer sport, whereas hockey is the most popular winter sport.

International competition has some influence over Shofercia's Sporting World. For example, when Kelly Clark and Sammi Shot dominated the Summer Olympics in Badminton, the sport picked up prominence in Shofercia, and was soon introduced into the school curricula. The head of Shofercia's Badminton association wanted to build statues in their honor, but both, Clark and Shot, wisely declined. Nevertheless, they became rock stars, and even taught King Ilya Murometz, and his wife, Caitlin Damage, how to play.

(Edit: Only the Spoiler was edited in, and it didn't affect anything else in the RP)

Open Cup Format:
All amateur team have two entry tracks:
1. Top 20 Entry Track: 320 qualified amateur teams are invited, and must win 4 elimination games to be in the top 20;
2. National Quartet: each of the four association football regions hold a tournament of 16 amateur teams; after winning 3 eliminations games, the 4 winners are in a group stage and play against each other; winner joins the National Quartet

3. Top 20 Entry Track vs Tier IV/Div III
4. Winners vs Tier III/Div II
5. Winners vs Tier II/Div I
6. Winners vs Tier I/Premier League
7. At this point only 20 teams are left, and the National Quartet is added
8. 24 Teams play down to 12
9. 12 Teams play down to 6
10. If the Open Cup Winner and the League Champion are still alive, they get a bye in the 10th round; otherwise the teams who beat them get a bye, and the 6 teams become 4. (2v2 & 2 byes)
11. Semifinals are Played; then the Finals and Third Place Games take place

Yes, a team can end up playing 13 elimination games to become the winner.

Kits

South Libertopian kits cover only a minimal amount of skin and tend to more closely resemble underwear than normal association football kits. The team prefers to play with gold tops and black shorts but has all-gold and all-black options in case of a clash of colors. The goalkeeper kit is typically all-white but there is an all-pink alternate.

Notes

South Libertopia is an anarcho-capitalist society where government is non-existent and legal services are typically provided by private insurance companies though some choose to maintain their own law and order at the barrel of a gun. Everything in South Libertopia is privately owned, including the gigantic Lake Liberty that is located in the center of the nation's territory and visiting any piece of property without the property owner's consent is considered trespassing and property owners have the right to remove trespassers from their property with force.

South Libertopia Assocation Football, Inc. (SLAFI) is a privately-owned corporation which was founded by wealthy real estate magnate Aaron Rhodes to represent South Libertopian association football at the international level. Association football was traditionally not a very popular sport in South Libertopia as most people found the sport boring. However, around 20 years ago, a South Libertopian businessman named Zachary Sykes popularized the sport in Flyntville by creating an all-women league featuring the most attractive players he could find playing in extremely revealing outfits. The league quickly drew enormous publicity for the Naked Cup, a game at the end of the season between the two worst teams in the league played entirely in the nude. The blatant marketing of the league around the bodies of its players proved to be a massive success and within 5 years the Flyntville Association Football Association (FAFA) was drawing larger crowds than Flyntville's last-place gridiron football team. When the Hoppeia Family Insurance Company announced that it would begin "physically removing" association football players from the socially conservative city of Hoppeia for violating the "moral decency" clause in the Hoppeia Homeowners Assocation covenant, the sport's popularity exploded throughout South Libertopia and the FAFA soon rebranded itself to the South Libertopia Association Football Association (SLAFA).

As money flowed into the sport of association (a shortened form of "association football" that became prevalent in South Libertopia to distinguish it from gridiron football and footy), the quality of play improved rapidly and player salaries skyrocketed as the number of leagues multiplied. Most leagues stayed close to the SLAFA formula that had proven so successful but a few leagues sought to "legitimize" the sport by de-emphasizing bodies as a marketing point and/or opening it up to men. SLAFI is one such effort to capitalize on the popularity of the sport by bringing foreign teams into Libertopia and potentially encouraging foreign players to consider signing with the Libertopian league. Like most Libertopian association teams, the SLAFI team will play a defensive style of association. Libertopian association evolved in a defensive-oriented direction because the actual game on the field did not need to be exciting and high-scoring to draw fans to the stadium. The players on this team were chosen from various leagues within South Libertopia, as most of the leagues agreed to lease their star players to SLAFI.

Of all of the players on the team, Maisie Miah is the most promising coming off of a 5 goal and 15 assist debut season for Rothberg City in the SLAFA First Division. Born in Ciqi, Maisie's family fled when their home nation was conquered by the Holy Republican Empire. As her father was a highly talented engineer, he was hired by a Libertopian company and placed in company housing with his family. Maisie was already a fairly well-regarded youth player in Ciqi's U-8 system and as the sport of association was exploding in popularity at the time, she quickly found a youth team and became a superstar player. While her family would not permit her to sign a professional contract until she had finished her education, she had offers from half of the SLAFA First Division by the age of 13 and eventually signed with Rothberg City on an incentive-laden deal potentially worth a million ounces of gold over 15 years, the largest deal ever offered by a Libertopian association team. While she is only 5 foot 5 and weighs around 100 pounds, she makes up for her lack of size with world-class speed, elite passes and the ability to score goals from long distances.

While the other players on the team are nowhere near as small as Maisie Miah, they are still an undersized team that relies heavily upon speed, finesse and technique. They try to avoid contact and tend to play relatively clean with lots of short passes and a very cautious approach. They will wait for the opposition to make a mistake and then make them pay for it. Set pieces and counter attacks are their specialty and Lydia Morrison is certainly not above diving or exaggerating contact to get her team a penalty kick opportunity.

The Blaneu Broadsheet

Snellbridge Opts For Youth in Semarland

With the first matchday of the Baptism of Fire rapidly approaching, manager of the national side john Snellbridge has opted to select a young side to face off. The deck has decidedly been reshuffled and after weeks of debate the national side will be much younger than the one trotted out at the Independents' Cup. Of the team that played in the Independents' Cup, 6 have been cut, with their replacements largely being drawn from the team that played in the Di Bradini Cup.

At the back Mark Bowen has been shuffled to the bench, making way for Glenn Peterson, meanwhile Graeham Jones has been cut from the squad entirely, and replaced with James Jones of Bay Road. In goal, meanwhile, third choice Peter English makes way for the talented Tudur Aled, who has the current best record of any goalkeeper in the Blaneuan League.

Bigger changes come moving up the pitch, with forward John Hartson moved to the squad and out of the starting lineup, and his sub Brett Evans losing out entirely, as well as squad striker Ron Lemon who has under performed for East Cape so far this season. Coming forward to replace the two that were dropped are John Pottinger and Gethin Powell, with Paul MacDaffyd also keeping his name on the team sheet and looking likely to be deployed more. Pottinger and Powell have both struggled to find the net as much as they would have like this season, however Pottinger has proven his worth as a target man so far this season, creating chances for his team mates. Powell is also most likely better suited to the counter-attacking style of Blaneu, as his club has struggled to press at all during games. MacDaffyd, meanwhile, is a much needed addition as someone who can score goals, taking a total of 5 so far this season.

The last two players to be dropped are John Ludlow and Gareth Lowe, both of whom struggled to make an impact for the national team, and both of whom have struggled at club level so far this season. In their place comes young defensive midfielder Caradog Gwent, who has proven crucial for East Cape's early season success, as well as Euan Fitzstephens, who has helped Defi Rovers transform their two journeymen strikers into goal machines.

Expectation for the Baptism of Fire remain not particularly high, with all the members of the squad belonging to domestic clubs the have had very little opportunity to raise the standard of play. The low standard of play has been made clear to Blaneuans through their poor performance in the Independents' Cup, with the side managing just 2 goals and one point from their four games, and also through the early exit from the Di Bradini Cup. Whilst the under 21s looked not as far off the standard as the full squad did in their respective tournaments, they still did not look likely a very high quality side, other than in an out of their skins performance against Starblaydia. Despite this, many Blaneuans are expected to make the journey to Semarland in hope that maybe, just maybe, they'll have something to cheer about.

Blaneu will be persisting with a 3-1-3-2-1 formation, with a flat back three, followed by Lloyd MacDai acting as the anchor man, ahead of him is the midfield three of Driscoll and Sparks (on the wings) and Aaron Starkey as a central midfielder, deployed for use as something analogous to a quarterback. Navarro and Davis have a partnership as wing forwards, who sit slightly further back, with Paul MacDaffyd gaining a role as a Centre-Forward, one who is more versatile in creating goals than he predecessor John Hartson. On the bench Mark Bowen and James Jones are likely to be deployed as substitutes, Bowen especially if Blaneu need to close the game down. Also on the bench are Hartson and French, but if they don't prove their worth as impact subs then Pottinger, Powell, Gwent and Fitzstephens are likely to be the ones to profit.

MATCH PREVIEW: MICHINE VS. NEO-ROMANUM
par notre correspondant anglais, Alain Outkine, de Szoirsia

What at first many among us dismissed as a fantastical dream has come to fruition; Michine are taking part in multiversal football for the first time. There will doubtless be much written in future about these first steps into a brave new world of athletic adventure, but of more immediate concern is that there are games of football for our appointed team to play, and words to be written by myself about the teams we shall be testing ourselves against.
We of the press corps have yet to be blessed on this occasion with any details of any of our opponents' playing styles, strengths, weaknesses, or even of their players, forcing us to look elsewhere for our information. Of the facts we have been able to glean of tonight's opponents, Neo-Romanum, one thing stands out; that they are unlikely to be inventive or original in their approach to the beautiful game. Their footballing pedigree has thus far consisted of their under-21 team's entry into the Di Bradini Cup, during which they finished top of their group playing a staid, conservative game and winning all three matches by one- or two-goal margins before becoming unstuck in the knockout matches against Qusmo; the Neo-Romanum youngsters simply running out of energy and being unable to offer anything when the match went beyond 90 minutes.
The Michiniens have been preparing for their first game in the oppressive heat of Szoirsia, the still air likely to be a boon from a playing point of view - for all of us, the concepts of 'wind' and 'air movement' have been one of the more unexpected fruits of this adventure - but with some players worrying about taking on enough fluids to survive. Net guardian Denis Lapine describes the scene to me as «like the opposite of a refrigeration plant», but he is quietly confident ahead of the game - «hopefully, it will be a quiet night for me and a busy night for Alex [Aïvtchenko] and Pierre [Lavotchkine] and a good result for ourselves in the end.». It is forecast to be a close game, but with little previous form to go on, there is hope for a positive result. All of Michine that takes an interest in the game does so with baited breath, for the moment of truth is nearly upon all of us.

THE ENGLISH TALON
Rannoria against Oscioru, a Match Preview.
Written by Jadjal Iks

For many people, football is an important game. Known as the global game, or the beautiful game, football has recently dominated many Rannorian minds. Despite the first Rannorian football club being founded in the 1890s, only now have Rannorians really picked the sport up. Many people await the national team's first intercontinental and international debut, consisting of old and young players alike.
Leading the charge is captain Karsten Sawar, the 29 year old centre-midfield who plays for Rannkradle City, the capital's finest club. Although the club itself does not dominate the domestic league, he is still known to be one of Rannoria's best, and was picked to be captain as he is known to work well with many players. Two other players to look out for this cup are the Gontayy twins, Laki, and Susi'anak. Both playing for the strong Admiraal FC, and both in midfield (though at different positions, that is), their chemistry together allows for them to coordinate offensives well. On that note, it is said that for the cup,
the Rannorians will be pushing for a more aggressive playstyle, and that they will be playing in a 4-3-3 formation. Of course, next up is the Osci football team. Donning the colours of red and yellow, Oscioru will prove to be a challenge, as their national team has had practice on the field before with the Confederation of Freeport (another contender in the cup) in the shape of a pre-Baptism of Fire friendlies game. This, along with being their first international match, has made the players nervous according to an interview, but they say they will try their best. After Oscioru, Rannoria will play the nations of Tarper and Illahee, but unfortunately at the time of writing, we have no information on them.
This concludes today's match preview, and of course, make sure to support your team on social media by using the tags #PRROSC and #BaptismRannoria68.

Kavagrad National Team

Background

The Kavagrad Association Football Organisation (KAFO) was formed in 1998 to govern football in Kavagrad after the unification of Kavagrad's 6 Republican teams, which had existed since the formation of the SPRK in 1960. Following the creation of the National Team, Kavagrad would refuse to compete in formal international tournaments out of spite, having been refused a place in said tournaments for the previous 38 years. This led to a slump in Kavagrad football, as the national side would only play close neighbours, and with no competitive element, fans simply didn't care about international football, with the consequence that the results of many friendlies weren't even recorded by Kavagrad media outlets, and so have been lost to history. Despite this, the government continued to pump funding into Kavagrad's football teams, to the point where domestic football thrived in spite of disinterest in the national side.

The appointment of former Kavagrad international Alex-Louis Valentine to the post of Kavagrad manager in 2015 sparked a movement among fans to finally end the national side's self-imposed isolation from international competition. Valentine had, as a player, made strong calls for the team to become competitive, but publicly remained silent whilst manager until May 2018, when KAFO announced that Kavagrad was open to entering international competition, and revealed that Valentine had been pushing heavily for the decision since his arrival.

Kavagrad would enter both the IAC Independents Cup 5 and the IAFF World Cup 2018 in the run-up to the Baptism of Fire. They were knocked out of the group stages of the former, with 6 points from 4 games after managing 2 wins over KPB Top 100 nations, Aggrey-Fynn Land (58th) and Darkmania (99th), but achieved even more in the latter, getting 3rd place in the IAFF World Cup.

Now entering their first NS World Cup in its 81st incarnation, the Redhearts look to set themselves up for a successful run with a good performance in the 68th Baptism of Fire!

Starting Lineup

GK - Edouard Calvin [1] - One of the most renowned goalkeepers to ever grace domestic Kavagrader football, the 37-year old Calvin doesn't seem to have lost a step despite the slow decline of other goalkeepers of his generation. Distinguishing himself both on and off the pitch with his combination of fingertip saves, penalty-saving prowess and near-emotionless demeanour with the media (even in the most emotional of moments), Calvin has been dubbed "The Heartless Redheart" and is rare among national players in that he stresses the individual nature of football, insisting that results are a combination of individual performances, rather than a team effort. It has been speculated that this attitude is the reason that Calvin has never been given a chance to be the national side's captain.

LB- Oscar Maguire [2] - The 25-year old defensive left-back Oscar Maguire has been considered a surprising pick for the national side. Playing for 6th-Placed First Division side Bostror Borders AFC, Magure has been consistently picked by manager Alex-Louis Valentine for the national side since early 2016, despite his less-than-stellar league performances. Strangely enough, the decision has payed off, as Maguire has played notably better for Kavagrad than he does for his club. However, rumours are abound that Maguire will be released from his club contract at the end of the summer, making it imperative that he impress in order to avoid falling into the Second Division Draft, which would likely put an end to his national career.

CB - Axel Anderson (C) [4] - As the Redhearts' long-term captain, having held the role since 2013, the 31-year old Anderson towers over opposing strikers, as he stands at 6'8" tall. One of the best headers of the ball in the game, Anderson is a constant threat from corners, having scored 12 goals from his 102 international caps, despite not entering the opponents' halves outside of set pieces.

CB - Raymond Alexander [5] - Seen as the attack dog of the Redheart defence, the 21-year old Raymond Alexander has only recently been promoted from the Kavagrad Under 21s side, and is well-known for his last-gasp tackles and sudden closing in on opposing attackers ahead of the defensive line, designed to elicit mistakes from the opponent on the ball. Very much seen as the opposite of Anderson's calmer style of play, Alexander's play has drawn multiple yellow cards in international games.

RB - Eric Valenti [3] - Much like Raymond Alexander, the young 22-year old Valenti is fiery and aggressive, but without the talent for tackling precision, resulting in far more discipline against him. Valenti will therefore do most of his defending outside of the penalty area. Valenti is a challenge for any winger due to his pure pace, which also helps him provide aid to attacks, often arriving late to provide an option on the right for bogged-down playmakers just outside the box.

CM - Aaron Wordsmith (VC) [8] - The backbone to any built-up Kavagrad attack, the 28-year old Kava-Nida native went underappreciated in the early years of his career, never making it past the lower regional leagues until 2014, when he was moneyballed into the First Division Draft from the Nida South Division (in the 6th tier of Kavagrad domestic football) by a data analyst at league champion side Spartak KVG. Despite not being drafted by Spartak, Wordsmith was picked up late in the draft by newly-promoted Rivers Athletic, proved his worth quickly, and carried the club to an unprecedented 2nd place finish, coming within 2 points of dethroning the Spartak behemoth, in the 2014/15 season. At a national level, Wordsmith debuted in 2015, and has since become vice-captain. He is a renowned set-piece specialist, and will happily pick up long shots outside the box when a stray ball falls his way.

CM - Kyle Keelie [14] - A second-generation player, son of the legendary Roddy Keelie (now manager of the Kavagrad U21s), Kyle debuted for Kavagrad at just 19 years old and is now a tenacious defensive playmaker, and an international mainstay at 24 years of age. Pretty much booked a spot in the Spartak KVG Academy since the day he was born, along with his brother Miles, Keelie brings a rough edge to a club that prides itself on clean, crisp football. On the international stage, Keelie has been impressive, and has already racked up 58 caps, despite his young age. If he stays healthy, he may one day take the caps record and become one of Kavagrad's legends, exceeding perhaps even his own father.

AML -Benjamin Mumuni [44] - An extremely recent addition to the first team, having only debuted on the international stage this summer, Mumuni is the youngest player to ever debut for Kavagrad at just 17 years old. Mumuni was, like some of his other teammates, brought up through the Spartak KVG Academy, but showed exceptional talent as a winger, and so skipped much of the youth system to debut for the first team in October 2017. Mumuni soon created an excellent partnership with striker Louis-Henri Bonne, and ended up with 16 assists from 28 games by the end of his rookie season. At the beginning of the summer, he was placed on the bench by Valentine. However, when winger Marrash declined in early July, Mumuni was put on in his place, and earned his starting place in the team quickly with a further 11 assists in his 15 starts for his country, 10 of which led to Bonne goals.

AMR - Kenneth Gordon-Cameron [22] - In any other year, Kenneth Gordon-Cameron would be considered the best player that Kavagrad has. As it is, the development of the Mumuni-Bonne partnership, and the resulting tendency of the long balls to the wing flying disproportionately to the left, has left Gordon-Cameron neglected. The 29-year old has previously expressed fear for a new generation of players that would overtake him and leave him obsolete, and some now argue that Mumuni is doing just that. While Gordon-Cameron, once lauded for the touchline runs that Mumuni performs with ease, has shown no public discontent towards the situation, some have begun to suggest that his career is coming to a slow end.

CF - Louis-Henri Bonne [9] - 23-year old goal machine Louis-Henri Bonne undoubtedly owes his career to the current national manager, Alex-Louis Valentine. Bonne was only 18 when his team, Torpedo Daniilsk, was relegated to the Second Division, and the resulting exodus of first-team players led the club to a reliance on near-retirement veterans, and hastily-promoted youth players such as Bonne. Valentine took the post of manager after the previous was booted for his failure to keep the club afloat, and quickly made Bonne the focus of his attack. Bonne delivered, pushing Daniilsk straight back up the First Division with 38 goals in 35 games. After a strong season that saw a leaky defence cost the team a spot in the KAFO Super Cup, Bonne was picked up by Spartak KVG, as Valentine moved on to manage the international side. Bonne is now recognised as the best striker in Kavagrad today.

CF - Sam Pyke [11] - Sam Pyke would not be in the first team were it not for the high-profile fall of Shane Dalton, whose comments about the national side's Supporters' Organisation led to his dropping from the side in July 2018. Pyke has quickly adapted to Dalton's role in the team, dropping just ahead of the defensive line to thread through balls to Bonne, and to feed high balls to the wings.

Subs

GK - Ted Mitchell [90] - The 29-year old Ted Mitchell is seen by many as the pinnacle of the new generation of goalkeepers, but has had his spot as Kavagrad's Number 1 withheld while Edouard Calvin carries on in his role seemingly indefinitely. Mitchell, while earning multiple starts for the national side, has never truly broken into the international side, and unless Calvin retires within the next couple of years, the Redhearts will miss out on the best years of Mitchell's career.

LB/RB - Miles Keelie [15] - The older brother of first team midfielder Kyle, the 26-year old Miles Keelie has not had his brother's fortune in football. Suffering a severe knee injury at just 19 years old, Miles didn't play a competitive game of football for 2 years, ruining his development and resulting in Spartak KVG refusing to renew his contract, releasing him around 9 months into his injury. Miles would return in the 2014/15 season, joining Rivers Athletic alongside Wordsmith, Despite not having the full development of most players behind him, Keelie has earned a place on the bench through his ability to adapt to both wing-back positions, although he will almost definitely never live up to his original potential, and will likely spend his career in the shadow of his father and brother.

CB - James Smith-Brown [6] - A solid centre-back of many years, the 32-year old James Smith-Brown is now arguably past his prime, and in the declining years of his career. Still an impressive header of the ball and solid in the tackle, he lacks the pace of his first-team counterparts, but remains a useful backup option at the back for the Redhearts.

CM - David Ochieng [12] - A native of the Bostror Borders, the 19-year old Ochieng has recently graduated from the Bostror Borders AFC Academy, impressing Valentine with his league performance in his rookie season. However, Ochieng was very much lucky to make Kavagrad's 18-man squad, after Valentine's usual backup midfielder, Salih Ahmad, went down with a serious ankle injury in early May, putting him on the shelf for the summer. If Ochieng can prove his worth from the bench, he may yet find himself appearing more often at Ahmad's expense.

AML - Mohammad Ibrahim Marrash - Marrash, a 28-year old left-winger from Kava-Bostror, found himself dropped from the first team to the bench about halfway through the summer campaign as a result of his poor performances in early July, to be replaced by Benjamin Mumuni. As a result, the first team has lost their only culturally Proto-Bostrorian player (while Mumuni is ethnically Proto-Bostrorian, he comes from a culturally Kava-Bostrorian upbringing). Marrash fully intends to fight his way back into the first team, but with the quality of Mumuni's performances as of late, he may have to wait a while for that chance.

AMR - Elijah Preston [25] - Preston may have a spot in the first team today were it not for his history of injuries. The 24-year old sprinter-turned-footballer, has a history of niggling ankle and hamstring injuries that have denied him a spot in Kavagrad's first team on any regular basis. He still provides an option on the right flank, and his pure pace make him almost impossible to deal with when he's healthy.

CF - Jacob Hendriks [45] -[/b] An regular in Roddy Keelie's Under 21s side, Hendriks was called up temporarily to the main national side after the disgrace of Shane Dalton resulted in a need for another backup striker. Hendriks has yet to debut from the bench, but he is expected to come on at some point over the summer. The question at that point will be whether or not he can impress Valentine and become a permanent fixture in the side.

COME ON OUR BOYS LOS TRICOLORES LINE-UP FOR DEBUT MATCH AGAINST GURIGUAY

Image
LEGEND: Gerardo Mercader will be looking for a stunning debut for Carloso in Baptism of Fire

SEMARLAND - Carloso has gone football crazy as Gerardo Mercader and Los Tricolores get ready for their international debut in Baptism of Fire 68 against Guriguay. Flying into Semarland for their first match in Group J, the country is buzzing as we all hope the lads will come out on top as they face off against three other countries: Guriguay, Yanghoon and Togonistan. The bookies expect Carloso to have an easy path to qualification for the Group of 32 if they come out in top form tomorrow. Tens of thousands of Carlosian football fans and fanatics have flooded Semarland for the game, hoping to witness glory tomorrow. At home, millions are expected to tune into the game at home and in pubs across the country as history is made.

Speaking at a pre-scheduled press conference tonight at the team hotel, Mercader said that "spirits are running high". Meanwhile, he revealed the line-up for tomorrows match, promising what looks like to be an aggressive game of football. Mercader is well known for his aggressive style and didn't deviate too much from what was expected. All eyes will be on the 19-year-old centre-forward Diego Santander (5) from Ebon to impress and go for gold. In mid-field, Alemán (12) has been put in instead of favourite Ureña (15). Madrigal United superstar Alex Fernán (1) will guard the posts from the Guriguay forwards. With a strong side like this, the boy's chances of victory look stunning and will be sure to test the Guriguayans.

MERCADER'S PLAN (3-3-1-3)

Loads of celebrities have spoken out on social media to support our lads as they go for glory. President Tobón confirmed on Setsuzoku earlier today that he will be attending Carloso v Guriguay. Keep in touch with all the football news as we follow Mercader and Los Tricolores all the way to the final. Here only on The Scandal!

The GFF is delighted to present our BoF starting 11. We tend to play our football the same way we play our stock market, aggressive. Our 3-2-2-3 formation is designed to pile on pressure and block out escape routes for opposing defenders.

The Blaneu Broadsheet

Opinion: Squad Still Needs a Cull of the Old and Useless

Counter-intuitively for an article criticizing what Snellbridge has done, I'm going to start by praising what has been done well. Firstly, Snellbridge has removed the most obvious under-performers for the national side, Brett Evans, Peter English and John Ludlow have all been cut in a move that was highly necessary. Beyond this, some people are getting opportunities that they thoroughly deserve. Paul MacDaffyfd is probably the best example, as yet uncapped for the national side, he has nonetheless been potent in the league, currently sitting at the top of the goal scoring tally. Leslie Driscoll has also, deservedly, been pushed into the starting XI after being the only stand-out performer in the Indepednents' Cup.

However, the squad still retains a large number of players that truly aren't up to scratch. John Hartson has done nothing to earn his place in the squad at this time, all his international performances have been fairly abysmal, and whilst he has taken three goals in the league, they have come from easy to convert opportunities that anyone could have taken. Fred Christiansson also adds to the number of not very good strikers staffing the team, he hasn't even scored as many for his moribund Portside AFC side as his strike partner Harry Norbitt. John Morgan is another egregious example of waste in the selection, not only has he never performed well at this level, he also has struggled with Defi Rovers AND on top of that he's a poor fit for the team's tactical system.

What makes these poor selection particularly aggravating is that there were clearly other options that would have made for a better fit. At centre-back Elliot Sketty and Sean MacDermot are both youthful options that have demonstrated their quality in the early season, given that only one central defender in the squad is under 30 it would be wise to start blooding them. Dyfed Elron is another youth player who should feel aggrieved, he has quality on the ball and is a useful option out wide, especially given the potential for Lucas Sparks to tank. Rhodri Apnest is the final example, not only is he a good bench option if a change of winger is required, he also puts in a solid shift as an attacking midfielder, which could be useful if Lloyd MacDai needs to come off and we're chasing a game.

Overall, it's difficult to assess how any of this will impact Blaneu's chances of winning the Baptism of Fire. All the teams entering are effective unknown quantities and Blaneu could well glide through to the knock out stages, or could well crash out without making any noise at all. What we do know is that if Blaneu come crashing out then many will begin to question Snellbridge's judgement in selection, as with the poor run in the Independents' Cup he may well find any reserve of goodwill drained.

Soute National Team

Soute finds itself in an interesting situation at the start of the 68th Baptism of Fire. Earlier in the year the national team began participating in the 22nd Campionato Esportiva and suffered heavy defeats in the first few matches. Thankfully, Soute got their feet under them, first by losing narrowly and then scoring their first goals in a spectacular win. However, that was Matchday Four, and the final matchday of the Campionato has suffered delays, meaning the time the Soute National Team is playing in the Baptism of Fire will overlap with the Campionato Esportiva. This will only last for one matchday, since Soute is expected to not qualify for the Campionato's round of sixteen, so the overlap should have little effect on the footballing performance. There will be longer plane rides and heightened fatigue for the first matchday, but Soute is up to the challenge.

The team is very much in a developmental phase, really the infancy phase, but the nation stands hopeful for a respectable showing in their first WCC tournament. All players in the national team played for clubs in the Soute League. However, this may change as Soute's top players look abroad to develop their talent. The manager, Walenty Jez, won the honor of leading the first national team by guiding his club Makarki to the championship of the Soute League. With the domestic season over, it is up to the players to coalesce under Manager Jez into one unit: the Soute National Team.

BoF 68 Pre-Group Stage

Postby Squornshelan Remnant States » Thu Aug 09, 2018 9:22 am

Group F Preview:

Hello, and welcome to Extra Time, you source for all things Confederate Sports, I'm your host, Nurali Jaglani. Today of course we're going to be talking about the most exciting development in decades, our return to international football in the 68th Baptism of Fire Cup. With me today are national team manager, Lopal Daror and renowned sports commentator Stip Shameless to discuss the team and our prospects for the group stage. The Confederacy has been drawn into Group F, along with Cobrio, Halfdansodal, and Kedroiqua, but before we get to our opponents, let's take a moment to consider the roster the SCFA has released. Stip, any interesting inclusions or omissions that jump out at you?

SS: I have to be honest Nurali, I am shocked with the decision seemingly to prioritize youth above all else. This has to be one of the least experienced rosters ever assembled, and there are many deserving players who have been left out in a gross display of what I can only describe as ageism.

NJ: Easy on there Stip, don't you think that's coming on a bit strong?

SS: More like not strong enough. Take Zholtokh Dzrenin for example. He has a brilliant season, assists galore, leads his team to a top 3 finish and what does he get? Snubbed, that's what, bumped off the roster by a handful of unproven kids when he should be the team captain.

NJ: All right, well you've certainly made your position clear Stip, Lopal, can you give us some inside into the selection process and the way you weighed different criteria in selecting this roster?

LD: Well I'd first like to start by acknowledging that there's a very valid point at the core of your argument, Stip. We had a very large number of hopefuls to whittle down do a final roster of 23, so there were always going to be some deserving players who didn't make the final cut. In the case of Dzrenin, we're talking about a player who had a superb year as the midfield centerpiece for Interblag, and would be a fantastic addition to our team. With that said, the other members of the selection committee and I had to consider more than just the present tournament when naming our roster.

SS: So you're saying that any player over thirty has nothing to contribute to the future of the national team?

LD: I'm saying that, first off, I'd like to see anyone argue against Strepol and Damot as our starters in the center of the pitch, and that we were more concerned, when filling out the bench, with giving international experience to young players who could feature on Confederate teams for years to come.

SS: Unbelievable! So you really did just write off any player over 30!

LD: Well let me remind you, Stip, that the Baptism of Fire is a warm-up tournament. A win would be prestigious, and is our goal of course, but this is still a feeling out period. When it comes to international football, none of our players has any experience whatsoever, and the possibility of making adjustments to the roster between now and the start of World Cup Qualifying is still absolutely on the table.

SS: Now you're just trying to ride the fence, Lopal, you can't have it both ways.

LD: I absolutely can Stip. I know Zholtok and other top players not named are bitterly disappointed, but they understand, even if you can't, that I, and the SCFA will do whatever we feel gives of the best chance of competing, both now and in the future.

NJ: Ok gentlemen, let's keep things civil here. Why don't we move on to discussing our upcoming matches?

SS: If he doesn't want to admit what he's doing that's fine, let's move on. The viewers know I'm right.

LD: Charming as always, Stip.

NJ: AHEM. Our first match coming up very soon will be against The Independent State of Cobrio, can you share anything about your approach to this match, Lopal?

LD: Well given we know almost nothing about this team, I don't doubt that the early stages of the game will be a bit cautious. It's natural for players to be a little careful when they don't know what to expect from their opponents.

SS: For once I agree with you. After all, we don't even know if our opponents will be human, let alone what formation they plan to use.

NJ: About all we really know about them, I suppose, is that they'll be on relatively familiar ground, since they also hail from that stronghold of sport, Atlantian Oceania.

LD: They don't seem to have a great deal of history, sport wise, but we'll have to be careful not to look past them.

NJ: Our second match will be against the Principality of Kedroiqua, what do we know about them?

SS: We know they have an FA with the sense to include some veteran leadership on their team.

NJ: Easy Stip. Your thoughts, Lopal?

LD: It's clear from their formation that they intend to control the middle of the pitch, and they have a mixture of youth and experience. It should be an interesting match.

NJ: Their attack is quite young overall, do you think inexperience could be a factor?

LD: I don't want to make assumptions, after all, we have quite a bit of youth on our own team. I would be foolish to think that they would be unable to break down our defense simply because a few of their players are under 25.

SS: I thought you liked making judgments based on age.

(LD stares blankly at SS as an awkward silence descends over the set)

NJ: Yes, well, our final match of the group stage will be against the Kingdom of Halfdansodal, another team about which we know very little, aside from their origins in a sporting region, this time Rushmore.

SS: From a sporting region but without a sporting history.

LD: If they had a history they wouldn't be likely to participate in the BoF, now would they?

SS: Well where does that leave us then?

LD: As a statistical oddity.

SS: Right in line with the aggregate age of our team then.

NJ: Well then that's all the time we have for now, I'd like to thank both my guests for coming on and for not killing each other on air. We'll be back after a few words from our sponsors with a feature on AC Damogran and their upcoming transition to League 1, stay tuned!

Czarna Gora National Team Prepared for Baptism of Fire

Team manager, Niko Petrović-Njegoš, has stated in a recent interview that he believes the team is, "well prepared," and, "ready to represent the Kingdom," in the upcoming Baptism of Fire tournament. These statements come on the heels of a grueling two-month series of training and practice matches held in the Czarno-Goran highlands north of Podgorica. In addition to weeks of high altitude training and lengthy daily practices, the team managed a successful 1-2-1 run in four friendly matches, including a hard-fought 0-1 loss against the 17th ranked international team from the Equestrian States. Both Petrović-Njegoš and head coach Franjo Stankić, have expressed satisfaction with this result, and it is hoped that the experience in international play will give the team an edge in the upcoming tournament.

The Baptism of Fire will pit Czarna Gora against three other novice teams from Alenburg, Saint Emelie, and Corindia. When asked about the opposition, Petrović-Njegoš has expressed his belief that the teams are fairly well matched. In particular, the Alenburg "Redhawks," should be an equal challenger for Czarna Gora, having a similar level of experience and playing a similar 4-3-3 formation. St. Emelie will be the biggest unknown variable. Their team has shown a strong offensive spirit, and has a particularly skilled midfield, but lacks even the modest international experience of the Czarno-Goran team. Corindia is the least well know of these three challengers, and they are not expected to perform up to the same level as the other three teams in Group C.

While Petrović-Njegoš has refused to speculate on the results of the upcoming matches, other football experts from around the country have agreed to contribute. Here are their predictions for the upcoming group stage:

Czarna Gora 1 - 0 Corindia
Czarna Gora 2 - 2 Alenburg
Czarna Gora 1 - 1 St. Emelie

These results predict that Czarna Gora will take either the first or second place in group, and will likely advance to the Round of 32.

We can hope that these predictions are correct, and that our team will not disappoint the King or the Nation! Good Luck!

HREBENIAN ELEVEN FALL SHORT IN FRIENDLY

By Ondrež Karunak
9 August 2018

KONGHEIPATSOY, SANGTI — If you were to believe the National Association, Zeleny Hrebenia's 2-1 friendly loss to Sangti was only a small setback on the way to inevitable dominance on the international footballing stage. The loss was not embarrassing, with several Hrebenians in quite good form and the match remaining close throughout. But for the NA's top brass, who have been all but guaranteeing success prior to the Hrebenian entrance in the Baptism of Fire and World Cup, the defeat was a punch in the gut.

"It is very surprising that we were not able to win handily," said NA Vice Chairman Žulian Borac. "We know that [manager Mikulaš] Krisar will be giving them a stern talking to."

When Krisar was reached for comment, it appears that he was the one who had been given the stern talking to, and he hadn't necessarily passed it on to the players: "I understand that the first impression is a very important one, and I am continuing to work with our players to ensure that we are putting the best effort on the field. Anyone who isn't giving their all will not be tolerated."

A source close to the locker room reports that in fact, Krisar was generally pleased with his team's performance versus Sangti, and was only concerned with their ability to defend against the strong counterattack through which Sangti scored both of their goals. Starting midfielder Žanoš Hrudenka seemed to echo this when asked: "Of course this is not the result we wanted, but we have much to look forward to for the tournaments on the horizon. We have a lot of work to do but I'm confident we can get there."

The team appears to be heading in the right direction, and generally seems to be a cohesive unit with the exception of reserve midfielder Jerzy Grzałka, and to a lesser extent starting right back Adam Brzytwa. Brzytwa's fitness in particular has been lacking. After he was subbed out in just the 58th minute against Sangti, he could be seen bent over on the sidelines, head in hands. Brzytwa apologized in the post-game press conference: "I'm sorry for not having it all with me today. I'm working hard and I will continue to do so."

Brzytwa's inability to get back on a breakaway counterattack led to the first Sangti goal, scored by Kikkoman in the 47th minute. After the Hrebenians failed to convert on a corner kick, an excellent long pass from Sangti defenseman Asturiagas found Kikkoman (both of the hometown Kongheipatsoy club) in the open. He was slowed up by Hrudenka in pursuit, but ultimately broke free. Brzytwa likely could have prevented Kikkoman from getting into the box, and thus have the excellent scoring opportunity which he converted on, had Brzytwa been a bit faster in getting back into the defensive third.

The Kikkoman goal did not go unanswered for long, as Bogumil Šala linked up with Isidor Kovač for the first ever Hrebenian international goal, in the 55th minute. Šala cut past a Sangti midfielder and launched an arching pass upfield. Kovač was wide open, and though he took his time to control the pass, was able to wheel around and fire an excellent shot into the upper right hand side of the net.

Both teams kept it close in the second half, playing much more of a back-and-forth style of football than the long, dreary possessions of the first half. Sangti eventually found their opening in the 83rd minute, once again off of a misplayed Hrebenian corner kick. This counterattack was a bit lengthier than the first, but in this case the quickness of the Sangti team was too much for the Hrebenians to handle. The left midfielder Todo de Rezal slotted the ball home with the help of a deflection off of Hrebenian captain Bernard Bača.

Zeleny Hrebenia opens their Baptism of Fire campaign in Farfadillis against Kavagrad, the first of three group games.

Soute Report

FERDULLAELE - The transition between regional Esportivan competition and the World Cup Committee sanctioned Baptism of Fire has been brief for the Soute National Team. In fact, actually none existent. Unforeseen delays has put matchday five of the Compionato Esportiva in a state of flux. Time waits for no one, so the national team has been flown to Ferdullaele for the start of the Baptism of Fire. The competition is entering its 68th addition in which a new crop of wide-eyed nations enter the crucible of international footballing competition. While some nations have the benefit of a few friendlies to get prepared, Soute has had the advantage of playing a regional tournament before this next level of competition. Of course, thus far Soute has only really learned how to weather strings of heavy losses, but the national team also has a win under their belt that they can work with to try to find a formula for success. The Baptism of Fire pits virtually unknown nations against each other, so Soute still has the difficulty of navigating uncharted waters. Hopefully Soute's meager experience will help them achieve success on their first trip to the global stage.

Just like the Compionato, Soute has been drawn into Group B. However, while the Compionato group featured a collection of nearby nations, Group B of the 68th Baptism of Fire contains nations hailing from all over the world. The nations of Mareibat, Kilaguni, and Ravsol join Soute in the group. Mareibat has the most history of the four, having participated in several regional tournaments. Most recently they played in the 4th Independents Cup. Impressively, Mareibat won their group with a record of two wins and a draw, but they ended up losing in the Round of Sixteen to Northwest Kalactin. This shows Mareibat is capable of offering stiff competition, but their last competition was also years ago. Still, Mareibat is expected to be Soute's toughest group opponent, and it is even likely that Mareibat leads the group into the Round of Thirty-Two. The other two nations, Kilaguni and Ravsol, are a bit of an enigma. Neither nation has submitted an official roster for the tournament, and there is sparse history to look back on. Kilaguni is a complete mystery while Ravsol participated in the latest U-18 World Cup. Ravsol actually had great success in that competition, coming out of nowhere to lose out in the third place game after extra time. This suggests the mysterious nation has a good crop of youngsters they can call up to the national team. Perhaps these two nations are withholding their rosters to gain some kind of advantage, but it is not foreseeable what this may be.

For the time being, Soute has the benefit of playing Mareibat in matchday one, a team that fully discloses its roster. Right off the bat this match may decide the group winner, so hopefully Soute will do better than their first ice-breaker match, a 0-4 drubbing against Brenecia. The match will be played in La Fantás, the wild stadium in the even wilder capital city, Ferdullaele. The Baptism of Fire is a blank slate every competition. Soute will have to keep a calm and collected head, but they definitely have the opportunity to do great things, not only in this match, but in the whole tournament.

Saint Adrensburg, Semarland

The South Libertopia Assocation Football Inc. team's plane arrived at the airport in Saint Adrensburg several days before the Baptism of Fire was scheduled to begin. This was the first time that most of the South Libertopian players and coaching staff had ever been outside of South Libertopia. For many nations, this wouldn't be much of a problem but South Libertopia was not a typical nation. In South Libertopia, there was no such thing as a government and every single thing was fully privatized, even the justice system and national defense. To the South Libertopians, it was perfectly normal for there to be several different competing justice systems, each of which applied their own variant of the "natural law" called the non-aggression axiom.

While it would seem fairly simple and non-controversial, even to those used to living under a government, to say that the initiation of force is always wrong, in practice there were many grey areas and interminable arguments over what exactly was an initiation of force. Indeed, most outside of South Libertopia would not realize that a seemingly uncontroversial statement like this, if applied 100% consistently as a principle, would lead invariably to the abolition of government. However, a government is by definition a monopolist of the legitimate use of force within a given territorial area which means that a government may, by definitely, legitimately violate the non-aggression axiom in order to advance its goals. As this contradiction is unacceptable to many people, some laid out an argument for a "limited" government that would exist solely to protect person and property against aggression. Yet, even a "limited" government that exists solely off of voluntary contributions and service fees must invariably, by its very nature, initiate force against other would-be governments that attempt to compete with it or it is not a government. Thus, only an anarchic system where no government exists is capable of producing a world where the non-aggression axiom is followed with 100% consistency.

The people of South Libertopia had not always lived without a government. In fact, there had once been an Republic of Libertopia that had eventually split into the 4 Libertopias: North, East, West and South. The split had been caused by implacable ideological differences within a nation that was founded as a land of liberty. The South Libertopian founders were zealots for the non-aggression axiom who believed that the initiation of force was always immoral and thus that they should create a society where nobody could ever initiate force.

As time passed, South Libertopian society had become increasingly insulated from the "statists" in the outside world. While some outside companies operated in South Libertopia and there was some movement of people and goods across the country's borders, for the most part South Libertopians had no interest in associating with people whom they looked down upon as criminals and willing victims of criminals. Most people outside of South Libertopia that were aware of the place's existence viewed South Libertopia as an extremely dangerous place where there were no laws and no government to keep people safe. Over time, most South Libertopians came to view their anarcho-capitalist society as the only possible way society could be organized while most outside of South Libertopia forgot that the place even existed.

The sport of "association", formally called "association football" and referred to by most outside of South Libertopia as either "soccer" or "football" had been a fringe sport in South Libertopia until recently. The sport's popularity only exploded when an association league was formed in Flynt that chose to deliberately emphasize sex appeal as the focus of its marketing. The unconventional approach got the league attention and after the people of Hoppeia, a city infamous across South Libertopia for its repressive Homeowners Assocation that "physically removed" from the city anybody who advocated equality, democracy, homosexuality, sexual "promiscuity" or anything else that they considered "degenerate", decided to ban the sport of association, it exploded in popularity. Finally, a businessman named Aaron Rhodes, who had made a fortune selling real estate, discovered the existence of the World Cup and decided to enter a South Libertopian team in that tournament to capitalize upon the massive popularity of association. Thus, SLAFI was born.

However, Mr. Rhodes and his SLAFI staff understood very little about the world outside of South Libertopia. This was unsurprising as Rhodes, despite his great wealth, had never left South Libertopia in his entire life. A collection of the best association players in South Libertopia was quickly assembled. The various leagues agreed to lease their star players to the National Team in exchange for the hope of publicity that might bring more attention to South Libertopian association leagues and fairly generous cash payments.

All of that had led to this day when the South Libertopian team arrived at the airport in Saint Adrensburg, Semarland. Most of the team were like deer in headlights, having no clue how to get to the hotel. Rebecca Goddard walked up to an airport security guard to ask them a question:

Security Guard - Is there a problem, ma'am?

Rebecca Goddard - Hello. I was just wondering how we pay to use the roads here!

The security guard was unsure whether this was some kind of a joke or this woman was on drugs. Nevertheless, he played along.

Security Guard - Ma'am, the roads are paid for through taxes. You don't have to pay for th-

Rebecca Goddard - What's a tax?

The security guard shook his head. This woman had to be high on something.

Security Guard - Would you please come with me, ma'am?

Rebecca Goddard - OK!

The security guard led her into a room to be interrogated. Meanwhile, the rest of her team stayed behind in the airport, puzzled. A police investigator was waiting to ask her questions.

Investigator - First off ma'am, could you please tell me your name and why you're at the airport?

Rebecca Goddard - I'm Rebecca Goddard. I play association for South Libertopia.

The investigator was a bit puzzled as she had never heard of a sport called "association" before. However, she had seen local billboards advertising South Libertopia's Baptism of Fire match against Freeport.

Investigator - So, you're here for the Baptism of Fire then?

Rebecca Goddard - Yeah. What does this have to do with what a tax is?

Investigator - Are you seriously suggesting that you've never heard of taxes before?

Rebecca Goddard - Yes. I'm confused. Why is it so hard to get an answer to my question?

The investigator began to realize that the girl wasn't intoxicated or playing a prank and that she really didn't know what a tax was. She made a mental note to never let her daughter attend a South Libertopian university.

Investigator - Well, government services are not free so people are required to pay a certain portion of their money to the government so that we can have nice things like roads and schools.

Rebecca Goddard - But we have roads and schools in South Libertopia and we don't have any taxes!

Investigator - We also have to pay taxes so that we have a police force to keep us safe. Otherwise, there'd be no law and people would just be able to run around killing each other.

Rebecca Goddard - I still don't understand.

Investigator - Isn't there anybody on your team, like a coach or something, who has travelled outside of South Libertopia before?

Rebecca Goddard - Well, Mr. Stevenson managed a team in the Free Republics at one time.

Investigator - Then maybe you should ask him these questions. I'm sorry we detained and questioned you but I can understand why he thought you must be on some kind of drugs!

Rebecca Goddard - Drugs? Do you mean drugs like marijuana or do you mean the dangerous stuff like heroin?

Investigator - Just don't do drugs in Semarland! You're free to go right now but please be careful what you say around law enforcement in the future. Let's go find your teammates.

Rebecca Goddard - OK.

The investigator quickly reunited the South Libertopian left back with her team and exchanged a few words with the team's manager. Liam Stevenson quickly realized he would need to have a few words with his team as soon as they arrived at their hotel...

Realistic debut at Santiago left the Thunders with some lessons learnt

Marcos Aránguiz - O'Higgins correspondent.
08/09/18 - 12:46 PM

Abilio Espinoza's insistent efforts in order to make the FHF get a friendly before travelling to Farf lands were finally listened, and in a decent way after managing t somehow get a ranked team to play at Santiago de O'Higgins for said friendly, in effect, they managed to get Taeshan for this match. For a new team adventuring into this lands, Taeshan would be a hard nut to crack, literally, by their defensive stances since their beginnings, perhaps they aren't one of the truly referents of this style, but one of the best performers and best suited teams in terms of knowledge of this tactical scheme, Unified Hispania's not as defensive as the Taeshites are, due to the many transitions and possibilities to go offensive that the Thunders have, hence, it'd be important to test out how to break a nut that has been the reason of many problems to many teams in the past.

This match, at some extent, was the cherry of the cake that symbolizes the integrative efforts of the FHF to take football for every province in the newly-formed Union, a not easy task in any instance if you consider the traditional passion impregnated previously in much of our provinces, especially those located at the Cono Sur (Which comprises the provinces of: O'Higgins, Artigas, La Plata and Asunción) with solid teams and lots of history in it, and also some neglect by a couple of regions who didn't felt well assimilated into the union due to their lack of talent, as how the Sucre and Bolivar provinces Football Federation chair acknowledged in the past weeks, something that looks out of context, since once that we have the Super Liga Hispana running, it'll determine the true level of each region, and precisely, Club Mineros (Bolivar) looks as the strongest built team in the complete region, together with Culb La Plata, Almagro (La Plata), CD Cacique (O'Higgins) and Santos FC (Sao Pedro), so, speaking beforehand may be imprudent.

As for being the first match of this process, the match didn't had a packed stadium, in facto, of the 45,000 tickets available, roughly 60% was sold, it does mean that 27,000 people went to that match, something that might look weird due to the nature of fans in this region of the Union, but counting that it meant a friendly and the first game ever of this national squad, perhaps those situations might be self explanatory or maybe would be people putting into doubts this process, as not being faithful that the efforts done to integrate players from different provinces and game styles would give a result in this friendly or perhaps the Baptism of Fire 68th, finding reasons to explain this, will be hard, but time will reveal this.

Espinoza's ideas were going to be tested for real, but it was uncertain on what he would field to begin with, since he was trying formations with all of the available players in different schemes, varying from 5-2-1-2 to 3-3-4, but the final answer prior the match was clear, a 5-2-1-2, trying to play the safest he can, with his homemade idea in order to test it with a regular competing side in the World Cup qualifiers. The rival, was opting for a 4-4-2 in a extremely defensive idea, by having little separation between the two lines of four, so, opting to have eight defenders when needed and only two players that would seek to be the escape valve of rival's pressure, manager Ying Uing's idea has become immutable since his first game and it was getting each day, less attractive between fans and the FA of his nation, by that reason, many said that getting a bad result against an easy team such as Hispania would turn to be his departure.

The stadium wasn't as it's best days in terms of crowd, it seemed to be like if CD Cacique was playing a game into the O'Higgins league, although the crowd was very diverse, since there were people with Sucrean, Ecuadorian, La Platan, Artigasite, San Salvadoran and Tegucigalpan flags over there, so, basically the mission to unify fans seemed to be working, but not in the desired numbers. This environment is ideal for some controversies as it happened, since mistakenly, the audio manager put the old anthem of O'Higgins, the Chilean anthem something that seemingly infuriated some Sucrean and Tahuantinsuyese fans present there, but gladly didn't escalated since the correct anthem was put on play and things came back to normal.

Taeshan won the initial possession, they decided to proceed attacking to the northern side first... Proved to be a mistake since the Taeshite squad basically monopolized the ball possession for the first half, numbers can speak of a 68-32 in possession, which left the fans quite annoyed, since they booed constantly the rival side due to their lack of initiative and mere desire to hold the ball, this lead to some aggressive attempts from the Hispanic players in order to recover the ball and take advantage of a fast transition, Rodrigo Sánchez took a risk and decided to sweep harshly on Enrique Fuegahita, tackling him on his ankle and earning an early yellow card, at the 9th minute. Similar fate had Cornélio Vilar, but this time, he wasn't carded, the Taeshites earned a foul, but Daniel Noguera appeared on the right moment to intercept the ball, passed to Vilar and then to Horacio Puga, who controlled the ball and gave a lofty pass to Carlos Basurto, who headed the ball and smashed it in the crossbar at the 14th minute, having another chance to strike, saved by Jacob Jingleheimer-Smitt and sending it to corner after a point blank range shot. Rodrigo kicked the corner and Puga passed the ball to Vilar with his head, Vilar put in front of the ball to shoot but handled it with his hand, invalidating the play.

Taeshan managed to keep the ball under their control, but since the 25th minute, they decided to try some shots from mid range, trying to test the reflexes of Eladio Salamanca, who reacted badly at the first attempt, leaving a dead ball on the area, Snavely was rightly positioned and shoot, but Joel Fontana was standing on goal line in order to deflect the ball and send it to corner, thus, avoiding for a while the incoming Taeshite goal. Randall Abl-Bakr kicked out the corner and served a nice ball directly to Fuegahita's head, the Taeshite nodded frankly and sent the ball into the net at the 26th minute, to much surprise of the fans, since the Taeshite B-side wasn't having a spectacular performance or something worthy for a goal, but football's not the sport where teams win if they do deserve...

The Thunders crossed their arms for the rest of the first half, by not having a lot of access to the ball, and trying without success to hold it for some time, since their constant attempts to go attacking weren't enough to decipher the deadlock of the Taeshite side, despite light touching was being done, in quick succession in order to find a hole into the rival defense. The first half ended and the fans clapped the Hispanic side, understanding the efforts done and the complexity of facing a well established team into the multiverse. Espinoza decided to make some substitutions, Rodrigo Sánchez went to bench, in his place Alonso Barros entered, Vilar also was benched and came to field Vito Mamani, changing an attacking midfielder by a defensive mid, in order to do some testing on how the play organization went with this ideas.

The second half started and Hispania was having the ball, the players decidedly went having the ball with more intelligence than the first half, this time, they managed to pass the ball faster and precisely, getting the pass accuracy over 80% for the first time into the match, but not having clear chances to shoot goal, instead, it was mere passing in order to get rid of two or three Taeshite defenders, until Mamani saw a clear chance for a long range shot, shooting a lofty ball to Jingleheimer-Smitt's goal, Mamani's shot was powerful indeed and it smashed the crossbar once again, Basurto appeared to push the ball but sent it out for a few centimeters at the 60th minute. Mamani took his hands to head, lamenting the missed chance, but it'd not be the last one in the game for the Thunders, since Basurto recovered a ball on midfield, served it to Noguera, who sprinted through two defenders and saw Puga on the box, with two defenders near, Puga received with his chest and tried to do a bicycle kick, but it was a miserable attempt by the young Tahuantinsuyese striker, hitting the air instead the ball and going slowly to Jingleheimer-Smitt hands on the 67th minute.

Some fans were booing the lack of initiative of the Taeshite team, but on the 78th minute, they had a chance to attack, Wilhelm Quiñónez entered for Fuegahita, Quiñónez commanded an attack to the Hispanic goal, he passed to Alexandr Denisov, who controlled and shot to Salamanca's goal, saving the chance nicely and starting a counter-attack, kicking into the dark sky of Santiago, Mamani took the ball and controlled, dribbling through Jamie Fasnacht and Alex Turniquette, Mamani got grounded by Edison Trueblood, the latter got red carded due to impeding a clear goal chance, and thus, giving a dangerous free kick to Hispania, although, the fans were angry claiming for a penalty kick, though, nerit to the referee by supporting his decision with his assistant, since it was a close call. Basurto decided to take the free kick, but rather than doing it directly, gave a low pass to Puga, who shot and score the goal, but he was offside, since the Taeshite players concentrated more in the barrier, thus, not leaving chance for a quick react like the one Puga tried to do.

It was late on the match, at the last minute of the three added as compensation, Mamani tried the impossible with a large cross who ended like a shot, Basurto tried to nod the ball into the goal, but instead, almost smashed his head against the post, an action that would have proved to be lamentable, but gladly, it didn't occurred. And the end of the game happened, Hispania tried for all their means available and weren't able to break the nut that was the Taeshite defense proved to be, a solid one, despite it's only their B team. Hispanic fans didn't booed the Thunders, instead, a quite warm applause sounded from the stands, as motivation for the players to visit Farfadillis for the Baptism of Fire 68, to be played in said side of the world, co-hosted by Semarland too.

Meanwhile, the Thunders are expected to leave Santiago in the early hours of tomorrow (5:30 AM) in order to arrive on the city of Antofagasta, where they will adapt to the climate conditions of their first venue in Farfadillis, Szoirsia, which is identical to the climate Antofagasta can offer in January. Then, they will fly to Ferdullaele, the Farf capital where the national team will be lodged before departing to Szoirsia, their last destination prior the first game of the Baptism of Fire against Raffiah.

in eyes of Espinoza, facing Raffiah will be a definite test on how his scheme manages to resolve against a team that looks offensive by vocation, using three offensive midfielders and a quite flexible line-up, able to generate high pressure as his team does, but according to him "the best medicine for a pressing favorable team, is pressing" so, it might seem that Espinoza's idea won't vary by anything unless things get ugly during the game, which we hope it doesn't happen.

The forecasted scheme will be another 5-2-1-2, although, Colón and Castillo would be more busy marking Ben Tzion and Elkardan, while exploiting the gap left on the wings in the bizarre 2-2-2-3-1 formation by the Raffian manager Leo Lapid, also, keeping the ball in control pretty much like Taeshan did, would be useful, much to the chagrin of Espinoza and Sebastián Fernández, since as it has been appreciated, the Raffian team has a weird aversion to get carded, so, playing up with their rival's patience would help in order to create effective chances on attack, though, this approach is weak if the team lacks of precision on passing, since would leave somewhat exposed the mid, something not desirable with a team that tends to be really offensive-looking, but that's strategy for you.

The game is scheduled at 7:00 PM for the Eastern Side, 6:00 PM for Altiplano, 5:00 PM Andes and 4:00 PM Northern Pacific.

BoF 68 Preview-Saint Émelie Drawn in Group C

For most of the world's nations, it's just that time of year again. The build up to World Cup qualifying begins with the Baptism of Fire and a field of 64 nations will be watched keenly to see who might pose a threat to the established nations. For Saint Émelie, one of those 64 nations making their World Cup cycle debut, it is a very different type of occasion. The Baptism of Fire represents a chance to win global glory.

Saint Émelie face Czarna Gora, Alenburg and Corindia in the group stage having exploded onto the inernational scene at the AOCAF when they beat Vilita and Turori 4-3 and only missed out on qualification to the round of 16 on head-to-head goal difference. Based on that form, Ameli Martin's team are in good shape to perform well, but the BoF is notoriously unpredictable and with few of the 64 teams having played in another regional tournament, some may yet turn up and spring a surprise.

Here's a look at the teams les insulaires will face and some of the other ones to watch over the course of the tournament.

Alenburg

Fixture: Matchday 1, Adar Jak, Szoirsia

Alenburg will be Mattijana's opening opponents. The Redhawks are certainly up for the challenge according to midfielder Vladimir Rostov. Whether they can translate passion into performance is another matter, but their neutral style may cause some attack-minded teams some headaches.
Despite that, a forfeit may also be on the cards. The team trained back home in Alenburg-Grunbeldtown in preparation and national media reported that the match will take place at the Grunbeld stadium. If the team have made the same mistake, they are unlikely to be able to make it back to Farfadillis.
Even if they do get there, the location may still play a part. The match takes place in the roasting temperatures of Szoirsia and could favour the tropically-based Saint Émelie team.

Corindia

Fixture: Matchday 2, La Gran Avenida, El Gran Bosque

Corindia haven't yet posted a teamsheet for the tournament, so are a little bit of an unknown quantity ahead of the tournament. The venue in the middle of a huge forest may be the most interesting thing about the match and once the novelty wears off, it may be a difficult watch for the few spectators that brave the long and dangerous journey to the stadium and the even fewer that don't get incapacitated by a flying jellyfish, dehydration or a Farve native.

Czarna Gora

Fixture: Matchday 3, La Fantas, Ferdullaele

Saint Émelie's final match will be against Czarna Gora, the Slavic outfit with a familiar vibe to Mattijana, of whom Saint Émelie is an overseas territory. What is not so similar to the marmots is the playing style. Head Coach Franjo Stankic has installed a highly defensive style and his side will be very tricky to break down. A late charge is also on the cards and may catch out teams suffering from fatigue in the dying moments.

Having said that, their vital central defensive partnership is an inexperienced one and Saint Émelie's cutting counter-attacking style may be able to expose some gaps.

This will probably be Saint Émelie's toughest challenge and if they can come through it, they will almost certainly progress barring disaster in the first two matches. Czarna national media predicted a 1-1 draw, which would not be an unexpected or poor result, but the same outlet also underestimated the experience of Les Insulaires on the international stage after overlooking the team's AOCAF performance.

Ambition is high-the team expect to qualify, but that expectation may be disappointed by the often random nature of the BoF.
