[ACCEPTED] Born to Kill

Postby Jutsa » Wed Jul 25, 2018 10:25 am

I've had this one in stock for quite some time — thankfully. I did end up rearranging things.
Here's hoping it works? Haven't uploaded one of these in a month >_<

Draft 2.12
Title: Born To Kill
The Issue: The @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ army now consists of giant super-soldiers thanks to embryo-screening technology. However, upset with being bred in a lab to be used as weapons, a battalion of super soldiers have staged an uprising, taking over an important military base. Their message been sent across @@NAME@@, as well as to the remaining super soldiers.
Validity: Nation has chosen #183.4; some time has passed; Sex is legal

Option 1: "Whose stupid idea was this, anyway?" shouts the general who came up with the idea, marking a folder with an X on it with an even larger X. "Our specially-bred soldiers are wondering why they were created in labs destined only to protect us, as Soldier 13 put it, 'cowardous scum'. The super-soldiers there are too strong, but they're still traitors. We need to go in with our full army, kill on sight, and if that doesn't work, we'll just bomb the crap out of it."
[effect] national borders are vulnerable every time a correctional facility is held hostage

Option 2: "No! Zee soldiers are too important to us!" informs Dr. Frankincense, who appears to have a sleeping super-soldier strapped to your desk. "Ve need to invade ze compound viz even more super-soldiers! Super-duper soldiers! Ve can zen keep zem all under control — viz mind-altering drugs!" @@HE@@ injects the soldier with a glowing substance, who then wakes up and breaks free of the straps. "It's ALIVE!"
[effect] an army of super-zombies roams @@CAPITAL@@

Option 3: "Now you see why they don't like you very much?" asks the soldier who broke free of the straps, Dr. Frankincense tapping his syringe in bewilderment. "They'll come back if you treat them better. We should be treated like normal soldiers, complete with a paycheck, vacation time, and a chance to eventually retire. Maybe you could even lighten up on some of the missions you assign us. Us soldiers are people, just like you — but betterer.... RERRR?" The drugs begin to take effect.
[effect] hundreds of thousands of @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@ are put into breeding normal people

Option 4: "BAH! Who needs 'em?" Libertarian and suspected secessionist @@RANDOMNAME@@ asks looking at the super soldier in disgust. "They think they're so tough that they can beat us? Fine! Might as well let them have their crap and eat it too. In fact, we'll declare them an independent state and let whatever greedy neighbor of ours do all the work for us. It'll be a lose-lose situation for them, but at least we won't have to deal with that crap!"
[effect] forfeited land has formed a military alliance with @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ rivals

Ah yes. I've always wondered why so many scientists in fiction think it's a good idea to intentionally horribly mistreat the beings they created to be ultimate killing machines.

It's like these people love to go out of their way to give their creations both the means and the motive to murder them. I thought scientists were supposed to be smart.

Baked goods are not relevant to this issue. You mean "bred", not "bread".

Also note #486 5 already gives both super-soldiers and vats in one go. (This has drawn some player complains for not being obvious that civilians will be vat-grown too, but it does say "completely regear our population for total war and utopian health".)

Jutsa wrote:[effect] the population's slowly becoming too strong to play jenga
Those must not be very good supersoldiers, then. Being able to hold a gun steady and aim accurately is more important in modern warfare than brute strength.

But then, the people who tend to make these have already been established to not be very smart.

1) Absolutely, yes.

2) Absolutely, yes.

3) Oh yes, definitely. That said, I kinda think this'd still be a nice issue to appear specifically after 183.4, and I think the core premise is both
different enough from that and really works better for nations that don't vat-grow all of their citizens already.
That said... I think I'll add "sex is legal" to the validity.

4) Good point...

I see that the supersoldiers were still baked to perfection. ;)
Or are the bread references deliberate?

If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. All this "bread" stuff reminds me of a time I was in Baltimore and the city had put the slogan "Baltimore: the city that reads" on some benches and things. Some graffiti writer had added a "b" so it said "the city that breads."

Draft 1.00
Title: Born To Kill
The Issue: The @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ army now consists of giant super-soldiers thanks to embryo-screening technology. However, an attempted coup took place at a top military base as revenge for being bred in a lab only to be used as a weapon. Though the coup itself failed, the message has still been sent across @@NAME@@, as well as to other super soldiers.
Validity: Nation has chosen #183.4; some time has passed; Sex is legal
I think the second sentence here sounds a bit weird (i.e., the part that begins with "as revenge...") and I think that sentence may need to be rearranged.
Option 1: "Whose stupid idea was this, anyway?" shouts the general who came up with the idea, marking a folder with an X on it with an even larger X. "Our specialty-bred soldiers are wondering why they should be going into battle to defend us, as Soldier 13 put it, 'pathetic wimps'. We need to shut this program down — along with everyone who was created by it, before they all rebel!"
[effect] thousands of super soldiers are being expunged

Specialty-bred? Or specially-bred?

--------

How will shutting the program down will help, actually? Is "fighting for @@NAME@@" really the only problem that these people have? Can we just "kiss and make up" if we set them free? I think it is more probable for them to resent having ever been created like this, to be honest.

(By the way, seriously, no V For Vendetta references? Seems like it could be accommodated.)

Option 2: "Zees soldiers are still of important use to us," informs Dr. Frankincense, who appears to have a sleeping super-soldier strapped to your desk. "Ve just need to make zem like serving us more - by injecting zem viz mind-altering drugs!" @@HE@@ injects the super-soldier with a glowing substance. The soldier wakes up and breaks free of the straps. "It's ALIVE!"
[effect] an army of super-zombies roams @@CAPITAL@@

Option 3: "Now I see why they don't like you very much," protests @@RANDOMNAME@@, gently caressing the dead-eyed soldier. "These superior people need to be adopted by society, and be able to have a life just like the rest of us. In fact, I bet they wouldn't feel so alone if you made everyone better off! Why not have all newborns made using vat technology so we can become superior as a whole nation?"
[effect] the population's slowly becoming too strong to play jenga
[Flag Change] No Sex

Who is the speaker in Option 3?

So, wait, it's not enough if we just adopt these people and show compassion to them, but we should be like them as well in order to gain their approval?

Also, we haven't grown these people in vats, so why do we have to grow the rest of the society in vats to be as good as them?

Thank you for the comments, FuF. Sorry I took like two weeks to respond...

Sacara wrote:He could say "as an act of revenge..."
Yeah, that's better, thank you Sacara. Added that. :P

Specialty-bred? Or specially-bred?
Fixed. >_<
Is "fighting for @@NAME@@" really the only problem that these people have?
Yeah, I didn't do a great job of clarifying that they're PO'd by being bread to kill. I mean, it'll be hard to kiss/make up with people
who could snap your head after being shot who were made to be violent meat-puppets, but y'know, that's a nice consequence for option 3.
(By the way, seriously, no V For Vendetta references? Seems like it could be accommodated.)
See, here's the problem: I don't get most references, and I honestly have never even heard of that.
If you or anyone else can think of some to add, I'd be happy to oblige. :)
Who is the speaker in Option 3?
Fair, yeah. Made her an army nurse (and female). Hopefully that's enough?
So, wait, it's not enough if we just adopt these people and show compassion to them, but we should be like them as well in order to gain their approval?
I'm not entirely sure why I wanted to do that, to be honest. I think I was kinda thinking about having one option like that and another one just reinviting them to society,
and then only wanted three options, but it's such a while ago that I'm not really sure.
So, I split the option, and now one shuts the program down and converts them, while the other prepares genetic screening for everyone. :P
Also, we haven't grown these people in vats, so why do we have to grow the rest of the society in vats to be as good as them?
Yeah good observation, and I'm not even gonna try to guess why I did that.

Anyhow, new draft's up. Let me know if it seems better, the same, worse, or unworkable. Thank you again, FuF. :D
ed: oh yes, and again, if anyone could help with the Vendetta references...

Finally, a version of this draft without any accidental references to bread. :p

Conserative Morality wrote:"It's not time yet" is a tactic used by reactionaries in every era. "It's not time for democracy, it's not time for capitalism, it's not time for emancipation." Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

"Screen all embryos for superior genes, and with the right amount of psychological conditioning and government funding, we can regear our entire population for war and utopian health."

Both of these feel like bait-and-switch options that start out from a reasonable position ("we should treat super-soldiers like people"), then twist it to do something completely out of left field. The editors may like those kinds of option, but I don't.

Also for what it's worth, while the compassionate option might seem like the "reasonable" option for normal nations, note that nations which were inclined to develop super-soldiers in the first place are likely to feel differently. For example, the compassionate option on #279 is the second-least-selected option, ahead only of the just-silly option, but actually chosen slightly less than abolishing vats, and both are chosen significantly less than the ruthlessly-efficient option. So you don't have to worry about a no-catch compassionate option being "too reasonable" and being selected by everybody, I think.

Hmm... I agree with your logic, Trot, about not needing to go the extra mile for a compassionate option.
Seriously, I thank you so much for pointing that out; something to try and remember for the future.

However I'm not entirely sure I 100% agree with you about options 3/4 being that similar.
Yes, I admit that I did basically make both of them out of one option, but option 4 suggests making the rest of the nation built for war (which is done in other issues),
while the other suggests stopping the program and helping them. I mean, 3's compassionate, but 4... I'd honestly disagree to call it anything other than a radical war option, which if anything is a bit like option 2 although probably more extreme.

If anything, I think 2/4 and 1/3 are more similar, funnily enough, but I still kinda think they're all different enough from one another.
I'm welcome to more feedback, of course, and if you really disagree, I can consider changing it and maybe even discard an option.
For now, I think I'll keep it as-is. Thank you for your feedback, though. :)

I didn't say they were similar. I said they had similar flaws.

If you're looking for food, then a rock and a plastic bag have similar flaws in that they are both not edible, even though they don't have much else in common.

The 1/3 similarity is also a problem. Both want to shut down the supersoldier program, and get rid of all existing supersoldiers (either by killing them or by brainwashing them into forgetting who they are). I think the compassionate option should be something that keeps supersoldiers, but gives them rights that normal soldiers have, such as a paycheck, vacation time, not being sent on insane suicide missions, and so on.

Ah... yeah, that actually does make more sense.

Option 4's a little over-the-top probably, but I do like that idea for option 3. :)

Woah! I forgot to actually post that I changed anything. >_>

I even typed it out... wow.

Changed option 3. Very much like the change. :)

How did the coup fail? I'm assuming a bunch of regular soldiers put down the coup, which would make the super-soldiers, well, not very super.

Oogh, you have a point.
That said, I'd imagine there were only a few supersoldiers and many regular ones, but you do have a pretty good point there.

Hmm... think it'd hurt the narrative too much if it actually succeeded?

I was victim of same psychopathy. I created imaginary DNA modificated beasts. As the story developed I employed them in military as hunting killing machines. The beast started to kill humans from my nation. The whole idea of scientific andvancement got screwed up trough psychopathy. When you realise your MISTAKE you can then modify butterflies or something more peaceful lol

(u can read the whole development on my nation page under factbooks: Wild Liger, Blood Chamber meeting & also piece of News "scientific error")
