Operation Symphonia: Invasion of Louisiana

Operation Symphonia
And some fitting music

After a spectacular reconquest of the rebellious Australia, Luka has not been sated. For he seeks to reclaim the long lost lands of Oest-Amerika: a colony slain just before the declaration of the empire.

In 1710, Letheny found itself amidst a coalition war, in which the previous king had sparked by going on a conquering spree, thus sparking a global conflict. Letheny was swiftly losing ground, her colonies were being torched, her economy was shattered, and Letheny's mighty navy was the only thing protecting the frail Kingdom of Letheny from the gallows. That same year, the first Alterz, a middle nobleman named Linus von Alterz, gained military support and overthrew the King. He had similar territorial lusts as the King before him but the competence to back it up.

Linus waged fierce war against the coalition and threw them back time and time again, and even stepped foot into new lands. Through Linus' capabilities as a warrior and leader, he managed to tire out the coalition enough that the two sides came to a compromise in which Letheny still held onto some of its conquests. But among the territories lost was Letheny's greatest foothold in America: the East America, or Oest-Amerika colony. It had fallen swiftly to the coalition due to its underpopulation compared to the neighboring Louisiana.

Thirteen years later, Linus would go on to subjugate Letheny's long-time neighbor, the Kingdom of Aldeny. He declared the Lethen Empire, but irritable nobles prevented Linus from actually calling himself an Emperor. His descendant, the first monarch of Letheny to call himself Emperor, returns to repay the insult of the loss of Oest-Amerika in blood just three-hundred-and-eight years later.

Belligerents

The Lethen Empire

300,000 militia,
1 carrier, 6 frigates, 17 destroyers, 20 corvettes, 4 submarines

vs.

The operation began somewhat silently, at midnight. The whole world was used to seeing their radars blotted out by the massive fleets of the world's colonial empires darting around. It wasn't until it was blatantly clear that Letheny was coming straight for Louisiana until the fleet had approached Bermuda and had still not turned to beeline to the Caribbean or Guiana. The navy was alerted and the air force was mobilized in preparation for an attack, but they decided to wait just to make sure. The fleet was summoned and stationed in eastern Fleuride (IRL Florida). The Louisianan government also sent a message to the fleet.

Le gouvernement de Louisiane wrote:We hereby ask you to redirect your fleet. It is approaching our waters and almost appears to be directed towards our lands. For the sake of peace, we ask that you do not make 25 miles west of the Lethen territory of Bermuda at any latitude unless you are at the longitude of 30 degrees.

The Lethen fleet did not respond, and instead took a hard turn north. Thus it was evident that was a decline to their offer. The Louisanan navy began to pursue the Lethen fleet, and about 700 fighters were sent out to perform a quick strike. Letheny however anticipated and detected this build-up and scattered the 1000 or so fighters it had upon its carriers, plus 120 more fighters and 40 stealth bombers stationed in Bermuda. The Louisianan air attack force was quickly overwhelmed and enveloped by the Lethen air force.

The Louisianan botched their cohesiveness in communication, and the Louisianan fleet attacked without air support. The 40 stealth bombers rained down a barrage of death, and ended up crippling the Louisianan carrier, 2 frigates, and 3 destroyers. The swarm of fighters came down from above and pelted the fleet with missiles, sinking all of the ships initially hit by stealth bombers as well as 6 more destroyers, 12 corvettes, and left only one frigate still afloat. The remainder of the Louisianan navy realized it was a fruitless effort and fled into port, were 3 more corvettes were sunk. Luckily, all of the crews managed to escape their ships.

With a decisive and somewhat lucky naval victory for Letheny, Louisiana knew what came next, and rushed to mobilize an army, summoning a large chunk of their small formal army and a horde of militias to come to the defense of the nation. The fleet was detected to be approaching the Louisianan coast. Meanwhile, Letheny's submarine detachment of the fleet scattered and went on patrols. Letheny could not blockade, as Letheny had to be careful not to particularly piss off any other great powers, and disrupting trade would do that well -- but the submarines were kept handy to do so if need be.

While the small Louisianan Air Force clashed with the Lethen Air Force, the Lethen Navy spread itself out along the long coast of Louisana. The reason the Lethen fleet appeared to be so huge was now clear: it was escorting a formidable number of transport ships. Letheny appeared to be conducting naval invasions in 5 locations.

A force of 70000 or so landed in Cape Virginia and began a fierce assault towards the western tip of North Carolina, where they would meet up with an additional 40000 soldiers who landed in Carolina Beach and were ordered to spread their occupation far and then march through South Carolina. Meanwhile, a large force of 60000 landed on the tip of Fleuride (IRL Florida) and aggressively began their march out of the peninsula. The remaining 40000 out of the invasion of 20,000 landed in the Cypremort Point in Louisiana and began to fan out all across the state.

Thus began a patriotic war for both sides, with Letheny fighting mercilessly in order to protect its pride in the face of a perceived insult and Louisiana desperately fighting to fend off the invader in protection of the Patrie. The news of the invasion would quickly spread across the planet, but late at night of course. Louisiana pleaded for help against the invader while Letheny's response was total silence.

Rules

Obvious RP rules apply here, but let me remind you that most information of the war is inaccessible. Therefore, while your nation will know that Louisana is under attack, they won't know the numbers of the attack, or the motive, or bla bla bla. You don't have to ask to join, but MT-early-early-PMT nations only, and PM me if you actually want to perform military intervention instead of resorting to diplomatic or economic objection.

"The operation is going well, your majesty." said a military advisor.

"Splendid." replied the Kaizer. "Tell me, just how well?"

"Very, your majesty. They have failed to defend on all five fronts and have not checked our advance in any form at the moment. While air superiority is contested on the Eastern Seaboard, the south-oriented region is under our aerial control."

"So that means all of our forces have already landed? Where did their navy go?"

"Destroyed, your majesty. A few mothballed ships are all that remains."

"Perfection. Commence phase 2 of the invasion, then."

With Louisiana desperately attempting to put up a defense, the Imperial Armed Forces commenced phase 2. The army was expected to link up all five landing forces within two months and an additional 100,000 soldiers were to be added to the invasion once they were complete. So, with the Empire cranking out a tremendous increase in its army and building up for the economic mobilization to support it, the invasion would commence in full steam.

Over a thousand artillery guns and a few thousand missile launchers relentlessly struck Louisianan lines, and the army relentlessly pushed in, usually overwhelming and (at the moment) outnumbering the shellshocked militiamen and infantry in their quick assault. Letheny had ground-strike craft attack supply lines, sturdier defenders, and reinforcements constantly, grinding down Louisiana's attempt at mobilizing a proper defense.
Letheny had brought in plenty of armor and vehicles, allowing for a rapid and well-protected assault.

While it all seemed peachy for Letheny, Louisiana was starting to pull itself together behind the scenes. But day one of the invasion had not passed yet, and victory looked bright and clear at the end of the tunnel for Lethen High Command

(If I can butt in)
"Breaking news, Your Majesty" the messenger said, "from the General Staff."
The Emperor was behind his desk in his office, of course, reviewing a recently passed act of Diät on further devolution of the States of the Empire. He raised his head, looking at the man. "Well then, son, bring it here." he suggested, accepting the note from the messenger, who bowed shortly and left.
Priority Alert

grassroots reports, as well as our own presence in the region and home-world, seems to affirm the claims that the Lethen Empire has begun an invasion of Louisiana. The goals, total units involved, as well as international reactions are, as of yet, unknown. The General Staff believes that some form of imperial domination seems to be the end-goal of such invasion, though we do not yet have enough information to decide whether or not this domination would be conquest -as was their goal in the reconquest of Australia- or merely enforced vassalage. Refer to our documents about The Lethen Government for further information.

The General Staff requests your response on how the Kingdom and Empire should react to this act of aggression from the Lethen Empire.
Hans von Rugesen
Chief of the General Staff

The emperor rubbed his chin thoughtfully. On one hand, the Lethen Empire did not have a high view of Frievolk, but on the other hand, if Louisiana did not have enough allies in its own home-world to make a response - even from their French-Canadian neighbors-, then it probably would not be a good idea to take their side. Pragmatism alone showed that, if Letheny was willing to forego international codes of conduct in favor of aggression, they probably would not react well to a fellow monarchy taking the side of their enemies either.
With a heavy heart, Johann von Berun prepared his official statement.

"The Kingdom and Empire of Frievolk does not condemn the Lethen Empire for their acts of domination" he stated the next day, to the press. "We do not appreciate how they've foregone general rules of conduct, but we can assume Louisiana probably did something to deserve it, it's not like the British -or their Lethen Counterparts in their world- would do something so horrible as to invade another country without prior declaration after all, is it?" he chuckled as the audience did. "Frievolk does not condemn Letheny, but we would behoove both sides to at least try diplomacy first, before open war can actually start. Lethens have a good enough opening to be able to demand, and Louisiana does not seem to have any allies yet, against this powerful enemy. Try to reach a common agreement so as to stop more bloodshed."

The Autumnal Palace, Belgrade, Notovasian Tsardom, 0200 Hours.

"Your Imperial Majesty, I bring promising news." Said Chief of Intelligence Viktor Pyotivich, over the phone to a tired Tsar Wilhelm III. "The Nation of Louisiana is under attack, likely from our allies in Letheny. This makes the perfect chance to launch Operation Seedrache and finally expand Notovasia into full dominance of the Adriatic and Black Seas, without much interference. If my intel is correct, and this is even IF it is the Lethens invading, the Lethen Navy and Army may be all tied up fighting in Louisiana, leaving them unable to manifest a stiff resistance against our invasions." He continued. "No. We can't, we'd be destroyed. Call off Seedrache. We'll bide our time."

The Next Day, In front of the Imperial Palace, Belgrade, Notovasian Tsardom, 1200 Hours.

"The Tsardom and Future Empire of Notovasia wholeheartedly and unabashedly support our allies in the Lethen Empire in this endeavour. This will bring stability to the region of the Americas, and establish the Alterz name in a truly Global Empire. It brings me great happiness to announce that the Tsardom will also take this opportunity to announce our own ambition: The Expansion of our armed forces, to fully establish Notovasia as the undisputed regional power in the Balkans, and set Notovasia up to become a World Power alongside the Lethen, German, and Hinodian Empires. Though we may get opposition to this from the aforementioned empires, I am sure this will quickly be forgotten and overshadowed by the expected Lethen Victory over Louisiana. It brings a smile to my face to see war once again flare up on the world stage, to remind those minor powers about their place in this world."

Battle of Baton Rouge Approaching

The Louisianan Army had retreated northwards where they formed a dense defensive line at the Mississippi River. The Lethen Army had pursued them fiercely and almost overran them several times, but the Louisianan forces managed to escape by the skin of their teeth. The Louisianan forces crossed the Mississippi River with haste and formed a line of defense on the east side of the river, north of where it curved into a horizontal line. On the west side of the Mississippi in which this was not possible, militia forces were thrown in a fierce, sacrificial defense to stall while the army retreated further north to prepare a larger defensive line.

Battle of Florida

Letheny had made a secret treaty with Spain to allow it access through Spanish Florida. Lethen forces were on their way to breaking out of the peninsula by abusing the peninsula's flat terrain in a tremendous blitz.

Battle of the East Coast

There were two landings on the East Coast. The southern one was present in North Carolina while the northern one was in Virginia. Both invasion points faced sub-par resistance as the enemy numbers there were rather lacking, and fanned out and pushed inwards towards Tennessee, but so far were still small occupation zones.

//At this point, we're only about 9 hours into the invasion, by the way.

Imperial General Headquarters, Elysia, Hinomoto, 1600 Hours HST

For the months following the Summer War, both the Aurelian Palace and the Imperial military headquarters had been for the most part, quiet and peaceful. The final triumph and subjugation of the Empire’s ancestral enemy in Sina had seen nearly all of the Imperial Court’s worries regarding leadership and otherwise put to rest, and solidified the legitimacy of the new Imperatrix and her loyalists as they set to work stabilizing the political situation in Imperial Federation. Now, however, that fragile peace and quiet had once again been shattered by the distant thunder of war.

When reports started flooding in that one of the Lethen Empire’s largest fleets had just mounted a crippling surprise attack on the Louisianan Navy, with a massive land invasion to follow in its wake, the Imperatrix called the Imperial General Staff together to deliberate on the matter at hand. As it had in the days before the invasion of Àorǐlìyǎ, the Imperial General Headquarters began to hum with radio and personnel chatter once again.

In the war room, Imperatrix Akatsuki, Laiko Shiroyama, the Imperial Minister of War, and the General Staff had quickly gathered together at the center of operations and begun their discussion, with Her Imperial Majesty having started off. Her expression was tired and grim, yet her tone remained measured and resolute as it always was in her dealings with the military.

“If the brutal events of Australien have taught us anything, it is that this conflict is, troubling as it may be, a foregone conclusion. Given her diplomatic isolation, lack of material resources and political cohesion, and the general disparity between the Armée de la Louisiane and the Reiksmakt, there is no doubt in my mind that Louisiana will fall to the Kaizerreik. It is merely a matter of when, and with the land invasion already underway, the time is fast approaching. With that said, what are our options in dealing with this turn of events?”

Minister Shiroyama spoke up a moment after she had finished assessing the situation. “Hinodia has little reason militarily to take up arms against Louisiana, and even less to take up arms against Letheny, even with this shameful display of undeclared war against a peaceful nation. A denunciation of their actions is in order, though in this case it does not need to be harsh. After all, the Imperial Federation may also stand to gain from this...”

“...Perhaps we have less to gain than we have to save,” Akatsuki pondered, pausing for a moment to consider the implications of intervention and the Lethen Empire’s last war. The Lethen Empire had only recently dragged a resistant Australia back into the fold after a brutal war that had brought a great deal of destruction to both Australia’s infrastructure and economy that would not be repaired until the conflict was long over. If Akatsuki could help it, she would have preferred to avoid such damages, and here she believed she had an opportunity do just that. “Louisiana was our most important trading partner in North America, and we still have economic interests within its borders, not to mention their national debt to us. Naturally, we won’t be able to salvage New Orleans before the Reiksmakt burns it to the ground, just as the Notovasi are doing in Zagreb, but we may just be able to save what we have in Cascadie...If we can station a portion of our forces in the ports of New Saint-Hélier and Seattele and the surrounding region, they may be able to avoid the wrath of the Lethen assault to come.”

Chief of Staff Hattori spoke up in a cautious tone, raising a few eyebrows and earning quiet glares from the rest of the General Staff in doing so. “...Pardon my insolence, Your Majesty, but would sending military forces onto Louisianan soil not be tantamount to invasion? We may as well intervene on Letheny’s side if that is the course of action we are going to take.”

“I am not suggesting an invasion, General. Think of it more as...A peacekeeping mission. By peacefully occupying Louisiana’s last remaining ports while the Armee marches east to meet the Lethens, we can secure the Imperial Federation’s economic interests from the fighting as well as avoid the doubtless thousands of civilian casualties which will result from a Lethen march to the sea or from a possible second land invasion from their Pacific Territories. Should all go well, we will have saved a few million people from death or displacement, averted a great deal of economic and environmental destruction, and secured a beachhead in North America...But before seriously considering such a plan, are we in a position to carry it out?”

Chief of Staff Hattori nodded and gave a short grin as he made his next words. “Yes, Your Majesty. The Fifth Fleet and its Carrier Strike Groups are currently standing by in Hawaii, and can reach the American Northwest in the next three days. They are ready to move on your order, and we can order the mobilization of the Third and the Sixth to follow up and bring over a solid Legionnaire presence.”

The Imperatrix gave Hattori a single, understanding nod before looking to the rest of those in attendance. “I believe that settles the matter. We will give our official admonishment of the Lethen Empire, and commence peacekeeping operations on the West Coast. We will notify the Louisianan government of our intentions prior to the operation so as to note incite hostilities, but know that the matter is not in their control. Either they will accept and save their cities and citizens from certain destruction, or they will fight against us and burn to ash regardless. If any in attendance wish to express concern for this course of action, now is the time.” When the Chiefs of Staff and Minister of War merely nodded and gave no obvious objection, the Imperatrix dismissed the meeting, and Imperial Command began carrying out their orders.

Before the day was up, the Hinodian government made a statement addressing the invasion of Louisiana to the world, though as things usually were concerning Hinodian-Lethen relations, the admonishment was far from incendiary or a call to arms.

Hinodian Imperial Government wrote:With the recent news of the attack of Louisiana upon us, the Imperial government comes forward today to condemn the actions of the Lethen Empire. Though the Imperial Federation has no great love for the Louisiana Republic, this undeclared and dishonorable act of war against a peaceful nation that has until now committed few crimes besides continued existence is a far cry from the justified reclamation of Australia that was conducted only months before today. It is with a weary heart that we hope for a peaceful resolution to end this bloodshed between the Kaizerreik and the Republique, though only time will tell how this conflict will end.

At the same time, the Imperial Fifth Fleet had left port and sailed hard for Cascadia, with its ships freshly refueled and filled with sailors and soldiers, and its carriers stocked with Hinodian fighter jets and drones. It would not be long before they reached their reached their destination, and with the majority of the already weak Louisianan Navy likely out of commission in the Lethen Empire’s opening strike, there was little to impede their progress. Spirits were fairly high among the fleet’s sailors and commanders, even after the Imperial Federation’s ultimatum had been put forward to the Republican government in the wake of their impending arrival.

Hinodian Imperial Government wrote:With the breaking news of Lethen invasion, and the memories of the brutal Australian War of Reclamation still firmly burned into the world’s collective memory, the Imperial Federation of Hinodia wishes to notify your government that it wishes to preserve and protect not only its economic interests on Louisianan soil, but also the many citizens who shall soon face the grim and terrifying realities of war on that same soil.

It is with this in mind that Her Aurelian Majesty, Imperatrix Akatsuki von Alterz, has authorized a peacekeeping mission wherein Imperial Legionnaires will be deployed to the port cities of Noveau Saint-Helier and Seattele, along with the surrounding region of Cascadie, to deter the Lethen Reiksmakt from moving into the region and employing its destructive anti-insurgent strategies against the local populace.

This is not a declaration of war, nor are the Imperial Legionnaires on Louisianan soil under any order to conduct any acts conducive to military occupation. This mission is to ensure the safety, security and continued existence of Louisiana’s citizens, as well as preserve what may soon be Louisiana’s one remaining chance of survival. We hope and pray that you accept our assistance in the face of dying hope, but know that violent refusal on the part of your government will be spitting in the face of Hinodia’s peaceful intentions, and will seal your fate in the hands of the Stalkaizer.

We ask that you choose your next course of action wisely.

North America, Louisiana

Having witnessed the devastation wrought upon Louisianan forces by the Lethen Empire, the Republic’s reactionary neighbors in the Mexican Empire and French Canada had been far from idle. As all available Louisianan divisions marched east to meet the existential threat of the Lethen naval invasion, both the French and the Mexicans mobilized their armed forces against the former colony, hoping to grab what territory they could before it fell to the Kaizerreik.

In a matter of hours, several divisions of the French Royal Army advanced from Southern Ontario into Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, overwhelming the few divisions still present before coming into fierce conflict with hastily assembled citizen militias as they attempted to seize vital urban and industrial centers across the Northeast. In the south the situation was similar, as armored columns of the Imperial Mexican Army stormed across the Great Plains, advancing north and catching the Louisianan divisions attempting to redeploy to the Eastern Seaboard off-guard. All the while, the Spanish Army in Florida quietly marched west alongside Lethen forces, reclaiming the panhandle and restoring the former borders of their old colony. In each cases, the governments of France, Mexico, and Spain declared wars of reclamation against the increasingly hopeless Republic of Louisiana.

Frievolk wrote://OOC: Am I the only one who thinks this will end up into a Lethen vs. France vs. Mexico deal in a matter of few weeks?

*Letheny, but anyways you'll see :)

From here, the RP will be from a more character-based perspective. At least, in my posts.

21 Hours After Landing

For several hours now, Lethen forces had been fighting house-to-house, building-to-building through the city of Baton Rouge. For every city that the Lethens ground to dust or cleared out, there was another building waiting to hold the Louisianan army as it continued its defense. When Lethen forces stormed the city, little did they know that the fiercest fighting of perhaps their entire military career would be attempting to clear out a sewage plant. It seemed that no matter how much imperial forces shelled it, the building would not go down. In the midst of battle, a Louisianan sergeant caught a private, no older than perhaps 18, crying. The sergeant stopped shooting at the people outside...no, the machines outside, to get him back into combat.

"Qu'est-ce que tu crois faire, asticot?" (What do you think you're doing, worm?) barked the commander.

"J'ai peur! Je veux aller à la maison!" (I'm scared! I want to go home!) whimpered the private.

"Ton maison ne sera pas là si tu ne le faites pas combattre ces krauts de mer!" (Your home won't be there if you don't fight these sea krauts!) said the commander. "Tu dois choisir! Je te tue, ou ils pourraient te tuer!" (You must choose! I kill you, or they might kill you!) added on the commander as he drew his pistol and fired a warning shot at the private, who immediately returned to shooting over the sound of his wailing and choking on tears.

In this sewage plant, morale drained rapidly, shellshock became commonplace, and there were attempts at desertion that, of course, never resulted in success -- either their sergeant shot them, or a Lethen soldier shot them. Only 21 hours into the invasion began an epic, yet grim and brutal clash that was reminiscent of Stalingrad. But though Louisiana's morale was faltering here, there was still plenty of food and bullets left for them. This would be a long, painful battle for both sides.

On a nationwide scale, Louisianan High Command still believed they were in control. Though they were being invaded by all three of their neighbors, and a fourth, distant enemy started to harass them, they still had little reason for their own morale to deplete. A day hadn't even passed yet, after all. But things were not as peachy as they believed, quite obviously. Across the great plains, Mexican soldiers rushed in like lightning in mighty armored columns, rolling over Louisiana's already little army. France had swiftly staked her claim on a quite considerable chunk of Louisiana's north, and began to overwhelm Louisiana's defenders in the area to solidify this claim. Spain's confiscation of Florida's panhandle, while insignificant in comparison to the remainder of invasions, was quite a pain to Louisiana as well, as it contributed to the already rapid dwindling of the amount of coastline they still had left.

Therefore, begging for help from the Coalition of Nations was clearly of no use. Both Letheny and France -- not that Louisiana's colonial master would ever be very helpful -- were clearly quite on board with the invasion, and Spain was no pushover either. The pacific ocean's top power was obviously rather eager to beat on them as well and it was blatantly obvious how insincere their admonishment of Letheny was. That only left Germany, who was likely uninterested in opposing both Letheny and France at the same time. Letheny, meanwhile, still had not yet declared war, but Luka was hard at work drafting a glorious, poetic public speech to declare his great war of restoring Lethen honor.

Letheny began a tremendous operation on the East Coast to smash into the great plains with rapid speed and to link up the two east coast landings with each other as well as with the Florida landing. At about 9 PM, Letheny unleashed a large 1,200 gun artillery barrage on multiple cities across the front, followed by a 300 MLRS guns beginning relentless strikes. The one hundred thousand or so Lethen soldiers in the eastern coast sent out their armor in columns, pushing on Louisianan weak points in the region before the infantry there came charging in a tremendous, relentless assault. The winded Louisianan infantry began to mow down the Lethen attackers, but artillery rained down which rendered them stunned and thus completely vulnerable.

This was the typical battle on the quick-moving East Coast front.

As the Kaizerwelt world has unfortunately had Hinodia, a fundamental member of the group behind it, leave, there's no longer much use to this RP.

So, in the end, I'm timeskipping. After a brutal, violent war of suffering unheard of since WW2, leaving about 2 million dead - only 800k of which military deaths, split roughly half-and-half between the invader and defender - Letheny came out on top and conquered Louisiana. The natives were driven out to the rump state left of Louisiana in a careful, well-overseen way. Companies and investors purchased lands across the new territories for building homes for colonists, infrastructure, and mainly business of course. The first wave of colonists, numbering about 70,000, poured in. They were led by lesser noblemen seeking to claim higher, worthier titles for themselves by forming new duchies and counties and whatnot.

A summit of Lethen officials, comprised of the high officers who led the invasion, experts in city planning, members of naming associations, a couple noblemen, and finally the Kaizer himself, gathered to rename the cities in the conquered lands. Also, since the Kaizerwelt really isn't a thing anymore, I'm going to steal the Dutch parts of it too.
