South the Mason

War. War never changes.
When atomic fire consumed the earth, those who survived did so in great, underground vaults.
When they opened, their inhabitants set out across ruins of the old world to build new societies, establish new villages, forming tribes.

As decades passed, these villages and tribes began to grow. Some united with others, forming greater nations.
Some conquered others, creating vast empires built on a foundation of blood and slaves.

These nations would fight, just as the men of the old world did.
In this cauldron of fire and war, nations would rise and fall, with only a few rising above the others to form great Empires.

Now is your time. For after decades of war, you and your nation stand alive and well over the corpses of the dead nations.
Shall you conquer your neighbors, or band together with them against outside nations. Shall you dominate the land, or protect your Neutrality.
It's up to you, but no matter what, war shall go on. For War, never changes."

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, Whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or in the holy name of liberty or democracy?~ Gandhi.

The United Republic

Tallahasee

Trumpets sounded across the streets of Tallahasee, as the brave men and women of the United Republic's forces led a parade in the central square, with battalion after battalion of soldiers, followed up by humvees (lent by the Pathfinders) and modified cars marching through the streets to the adulation of cheering crowds. Extra portions of food and water were being distributed by well-dressed men and women; a reminder of the abundance that the Democratic Confederalist method of production can bring forth. A few Mosquito Fighters flew overhead, conducting a crude air show that further pleased the crowds, who knew that this was merely a small proportion of the force that can be projected by their nation.

The Radios would then play the words of one of their Co-Presidents, Sedna Hill. Many in the crowd smiled as they remembered voting for her, or voting against but then conceding that she did have her gifts. Public speaking was one of said gifts, and it showed as her words sounded out through the speakers.

"My beloved people, it is with great pleasure to tell you that the United Republic has reached its 100th year. Without your help, without your valor and hard work, our way, the Third Way that provides Liberty and Fairness, would never have lasted as long as it did in this cruel world. The towns and cities would not have united in mutual aid and protection if it was against your will, and the workers and farmers of the world would have remained under the yoke of selfish, irrational interests who care nothing for the suffering of others."

"So rejoice, my beloved people, for we have kept ourselves free! Rejoice, my beloved people, for your interests are defended! Rejoice, for we are strong!"

Savannah

Osecola of the Seminole listened to his Co-President's words on the radio; Sedna seemed to be having fun. But right now, he had a problem to manage, a problem grown out of the very successes Sed was tauting.

Simply put, there was too much food.

Yes, such a statement should be absurd in the post-apocalypse; there was too much food. But the United Republic had focused on agriculture and the worker-farmer cooperatives have proven as efficient as they were in the halcyon days of Syndicalist Catalonia, which is to say; very. Everyone had three square meals a day; including a little fruit and even less meat; meat wasted land that could be used to grow rice, wheat and maize. This contributed to the problem that was causing several 'distributors' to just throw their surplus produce into the sea.

Of course, the population was starting to grow again after the plagues of 2265 and 2270; those had been dark days for the Republic. So one can't just put into place measures to reduce food production; that'd be bad for the long term. But now came the main reason that excess food production was a problem: Only one nation - Lousiana - wanted to trade with the United Republic, and even then it was clear that was only because it feared the Republic of Texas even more than it did the 'Pinko Anarchists'.

Cuba disliked the United Republic; the latter's navy was fending off their privateers every so often. South Carolina's cities - Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston - wanted nothing to do with 'N***er lovers' and 'Femicommies'. Well, Osecola of the Seminole didn't like them either.

His pre-war swivel chair turned towards Aisha Felat, the General Commander of the United Women's Protection Units as he said to the relatively young Kurdish-American, "5000 infantry, 1000 cavalry, and 6 mortars and a selection of heavy machine guns, along with 3 Huey Helicopters. Advance from Augusta and take Columbia by storm."

((Struck Parts are Retconend Out))

Lousiana

Andrew Tanner had the look of a hard man and a hard leader, with a scar across his blind right eye. Clad in his thick cloth duster, his bolt-action rifle (with attached bayonet) strapped to his back, and no doubt hiding a bunch of weapons underneath said duster, he would nevertheless be an unimportant sight.

Unimportant, if not for the three hundred men and women he led, veterans of the United Republic's wars against slavers, raiders, and bandits. As he marched towards the border crossing, his men holding out white flags of negotiation, Andrew hoped in his heart that the higher-ups had notified the Orleanites' own superiors, that his own attempts to forewarn and notify the Louisanans of the purpose of their coming had borne fruit.

The captain of the border guards, clad in a vividly impractical ceremonial uniform, gestured for the band to halt; the crossing already had its artillery aimed at them. He and Andrew would then walk forwards to meet with each other, before the former said, "These are your 'volunteers', Mon Ami?I never knew your 'Republic' would be so miserly..."

Andrew grinned. "This is only the first wave of volunteers, sir. Two more are coming later this month; together we'll be a thousand. The same number of volunteers and mercenaries will come the month after that. You still have months before the Texans come for you, right?"

The guard captain frowned at that, then smiled. "The third month better bring twice that of the past two, or else we might make this agreement null and void..."

American Republic

It took time for the Republic to finally clear the streets of new york of super mutants, raiders and slavers. The Republic quickly established itself as a major power in the area. Manhatten island was quickly locked down, APCs were dragged to be stationed on the bridges leading to the island ensuring no one could access the area while the government rebuilds. The raiders and mutants have done a number on many of the once perfectly preserved skyscrapers. Many of them would need extensive work to restore it back to its original form. News of their achievements soon spread across the wasteland.

The power station close to the city was the first to be restored, lights finally came on, several cases of GECKs were also used to terraform the area, its reactor combined with the fusion reactor in the vaults and power station ensured plentiful supplies of energy to the city. For the first time in over 100 years, the gleaming skyline of new york city came back on. Becoming a beacon of hope for the surrounding area. Fertile land also opened up many opportunities for agriculture. Its advanced medical facilities cured the citizens of common deadly diseases. Schools sprang up across the republic, reusing the old schools back in the day. Teaching the wastelanders the concept of democracy, the wonders of the old world and what is deemed acceptable in American society and the skills necessary for society to grow.

Atlas Corporation has already set out establishing itself back into the wasteland, setting up numerous outposts and bases. The water chips now provided clean and plentiful supplies of clean water for the citizens of the Republic. The rivers cleansed of radiation. Trade flourished between settlements and the city itself. Security forces quickly expanded into the surrounding areas and cities. A clear line was drawn between the rapidly developing cities and the wasteland. Attracting raiders and criminal elements to the city. Ghouls, however, were not allowed into Manhatten island where most of the humans lived. Many lived across the river in Jersey City.

The foundry and automated workshops in the underground vaults produced what the republic needed especially new weapons for its troops. But it was clear from the beginning that it would not be enough to sustain a huge county. Expansion towards the eastern section of the republic was slowly put in place careful not to overextend itself.

Fuel became the main source of concern for the Republic, Coal was still common in the surrounding areas and were used to power the regions and some converted into fuel for the republic's vehicles. A small trickle of fuel flowed into the city reserved only for the military vehicles. The millions of cars littering the place were quickly scrapped for parts and materials. Atlas facilities, especially its oil and research facilities in the north were of priority. A new technology developed by the Republic's engineers found a new way of extracting oil called fracking. Oil wells thought empty now begun to pump out black gold. Atlas was of course put in charge of extracting and protection.

The government settled into their new buildings and got to work revitalising the United States. A link to one of their satellites was briefly established and with it brought vital information about the state of the continent. What they saw concerned them greatly. they did not have a full picture but if the images were right. significant developments are happening in the west. What concerned them more was the loss of contact with major US bases in the vicinity, Raven rock, one of the most important bases in the west coast was active Enclave vaults in new york established a link to the base but so far there seem to be no responses. There are also lots of activity in Philidelphia which is another source of concern for the republic.

Rumours of a new power in Washington DC was a source of major intrigue as well but so far the Republic does not have the resources necessary to explore so far south. Microchips were also the new focus of the republic, with huge potential over the bulky vacuum tubes, it could open many more options and doors to major developments.

These concerns were put to one side in order to focus on reconstruction. Over the past few years thanks to leadership under the newly sworn-in President Kirkman and the late Tanner Mauler the republic has made rapid developments.

Most restoration work in New York city has been completed, the city regained most of its charm as citizens abandoned the shacks of the wasteland for concrete apartments, police kept the street safe and the new york stock exchange have reopened bringing new opportunities for many citizens, especially those that created their own companies, the concept and practice of the stock market has been relatively new to wastelanders but lessons conducted by the republic helped those that expressed interest in understanding it. With it, the stock market flourished and so did many businesses. Those that benefited the most were trading companies who have grown in considerable size. The biggest one, however, was still Atlas corporation, now 3 times the size it started out with. They were responsible for providing most of the trading companies with men, protecting their caravans and goods.

The government also approved of a new plan to extend its reach into the wasteland. Atlas Corporation was tasked with the job of clearing out raider settlements from long island and to open any prewar storage bunkers in order to retrieve the equipment with a 2 million dollar contract. Forces from New York and Philadelphia now pushed down the I-95 highway setting up outposts and reclaiming the land to the town of Edison. The Treasury also reintroduced the US currency(prewar-currency) into the republic to replace caps, its worth now backed by what remained of the few millions of dollars of gold in the federal reserve. Public works project have been set up for wastelanders coming to the city in the hopes of a better future just like the ones who immigrated to new york during the 1920s. Immigrants have a choice between military or civil defence service or labourers in fixing America's infrastructure. With most of new york looking like how it was before, efforts are now been concentrated on restoring the rest of the area as much as possible which had been hard hit by the bombs. The system of pipes and water treatment plants have also been fully repaired piping clean water to new york houses providing sanitation and clean water for the citizens, improving their health. Hospitals many of which have been stripped of essential medical supplies are now being slowly restocked, rusting medical equipment repaired, greatly improving the quality of life and health of the citizens.

The Republic Congress approved a 20 million dollar investment into the Brooklyn naval yards as well as to repair pre-war naval ships still stuck in the harbour and the dry docks. The statue of liberty the shining beacon of American liberty and freedom have been repaired back to its former glory. Shining as grand as it was day and night. The island and the surrounding Ellis and governers island have also been repaired and used by the military as bases to prevent enemy ships from approaching. Prewar harpoon missile launchers have been taken out of storage and placed on the island. They still required extensive repairs but with 5 of these launchers out of storage, work could finally begin in repairing them.

Most of the city' prewar Anti-air defences were still offline, but thanks to the Advanced foundries of the republic, 2 batteries of Patriot missile batteries and three mobile C-Ram point defence turrets have been repaired and rearmed to be redeployed to strategic areas of the city. Manhatten Island now swarmed with troops as the leadership underwent massive relocation efforts, the senate and house of representatives are to be relocated to several different areas of the city to avoid overcrowding.

The government now in order to secure more land and resources have decided to push till West point to the north clearing out raider holdouts along the way and another force towards the city of New Haven. Their Goal was the City of Boston, the surrounding roads and highways were relatively untouched but the rusting cars prove to be an obstacle Atlas Corporation were also contracted to accompany the troops in their expedition and to also finally clear out any hostiles in long Island before any reconstruction teams could move in to rebuild. One V-22 Osprey and 2 UH-60 loaded with supplies and JSOC teams took off from the restored Newark airport their objective was to set up an outpost or FOB to recon the area and wait for the rest of the troops to arrive. A total of 500 men altogether from both the regular republic forces and Atlas Mercenaries have been committed for this expedition. The City of Edison was the first to come under republic rule after the surrounding settlements who craved the luxuries of the old world agreed to integration. Raider gangs and super mutants were quickly dispatched with VB-2 gunships strafing their known hideouts and the rest of the local citizens used to mop up the survivors. A major victory was scored when the locals with the support of a small number of regular troops cleared out the biggest raider gang that occupied a large federal ration stockpile bunker. several Tons of food stockpiled in the bunker now could be distributed to the ones who needed it most and reconstruction teams moved in to rebuild the ruined buildings.
In the other fronts there have been a few hiccups along the way, in West Point, the US training camp was guarded by a zealous raider gang and was well armed. When the fighting finally ceased the death toll stood at 17. 6 of which due to a trap rigged by the raiders which destroyed part of the building. A republic war correspondent overheard a comment made by a Republican combat engineer talking to another soldier whose team were responsible for repairing and restoring the building before the civilian contractors arrived.

"God damn Raiders. look what they did to this place. Have you seen the walls in there or what was in those bags? that shits nasty."

In East Army group B tasked with taking New Haven had to stop in West Haven only a bridge separated them from their objective. But the men were tired and they have encountered much stiffer resistance than expected. the casualty rate has risen to 15 men 6 KIA and they also had to wait for reinforcements and supplies to catch up.

Engineers have also recently repaired 4 F-16Vs and 2 F-15SEs as well as 2 AH-64DS all of which are based in either JFK or Newark international all armed for Close air support missions ready to take off in a moment's notice.

In Harriman state park a mysterious signal could be detected, a team has been dispatched to get to the bottom of it hoping it to be one of the supply bunkers from before the war. In Manhatten, one of the office towers that was slated to be refurbished was disrupted when workers found the doors in the top level were armoured and locked with an electronic key that could not be accessed by anyone. When a team finally managed to open one of the doors, they were fired upon by automated turrets installed on the walls. Swat teams were called to the scene and the building, as well as the surrounding area, was sealed off. It took 10 meticulous and stressful hours and 30 casualties before they managed to enter what looked like a command centre and disabled the security systems. It was a weird mix of both a luxury apartment with beautifully carpeted floors and sofas as well as in the middle a ring of computers, made by Robco or Atlas, in the middle, a large holographic projection of the globe. Two Mr handys flew around pay no mind to the armed men, concentrating on keeping the place spick and span.

The CIA was immediately informed of this and soon they searched the place from top to bottom. the place stretched out 4 floors connected via secret lifts and stairs. they contained files for what the US had dubbed the Cerberus project. This was one of the many bases they had stretched across the US. Its main goal was weapons development and medical advancement as a top-secret special forces unit tasked with the most dangerous missions. Files recovered hinted that the main base of operations is somewhere in Harriman state park. The joints chiefs have approved of the plan to begin searching for the base and find out more about this secret project. Engineers and scientists now scour this facility in the hopes of finding more information as well as restoring it to full operational capacity.

River City, Bootheel Wasteland

It was a typical day along the Mississippi River. Barges moved up and down the river to do trade or just pass through. Many were independent businessmen, and many more were vessels on official business with the Osage nation located on the republic's doorstep. One such vessel was the "William Clark", a large cargo barge used by River Admiral Wyatt Booth as his personal flagship. The ship usually just floated slowly up and down the chunk of the river the Republic watches over, and watches the shore for raider movement. A big concern lately was looking out for craft belonging to New Egypt, a faction of slavers built along the river down south. Although the Republic was far enough away and also had the benefit of Osage boats also looking out for New Egypt, it was still a pressing matter. The River Navy had standing orders to open fire on any New Egypt vessel, which was upsetting to many in the leadership due to the fact that the republic prefers to do business with outsiders rather than attack, but with slavers you usually aren't given that choice.

Within the city, the workshops got busy making flags and radios, as a small expansion was planned which would see trade posts being opened in many independent settlements across the river. Also being made were the hunting rifles and shotguns that the navy depended on, although these were either being produced as a surplus or to sell off to travelers visiting River City. Not much of note was going on in the city itself today, which was just the way Grand Mayor Jackson Murphy liked it. The Grand Mayor was busy planning a grand river caravan to go to St. Louis that would launch today, and did not need any other concerns. The caravan would include a large cargo barge carrying with it a large selection of interesting items found in travels or bought from visitors, the personal houseboat of the Mayor himself, 3 barges belonging to some wealthy traders of the Republic, a single River Navy boat (captained by a long time veteran and man that helped normalize relations with the Osage, Captain John Husk), as well as 3 private security motor boats, hired by the traders to look after the caravan.

As for the expansion mentioned earlier, the Republic sent scavengers to scout out the rest of the remains of Tiptonville, Tennessee, which just consisted of a long stretch of road from the outskirts of Republic territory to the lake known as "the Blue Basin" or "Reelfoot Lake". This strectch of road was devoid of life, save for some mole rats, and the scavengers planted a Republic flag at the Reelfoot Lake Inn at the end of Church street, claiming the rest of the town for the Republic. However, the navy would not protect the parts of Tiptonville that do not touch the river, due to the need for as many boats to be on the water as possible, so the Republic citizens that lived there (a handful of scrappers and salvagers that sought fortune outside of the safe walls of River City) relied on themselves for protection. This wasn't much of an issue, as most scrappers had been at it long enough to afford decent weapons or to craft their own makeshift armors to handle whatever raider they might bump into. The access to the Blue Basin presented many options to the near and distant future of the Republic, and so the Grand Mayor and the General Assembly considered the reclamation of Tiptonville to be a major success, so much so that the scappers that claimed the Reelfoot Lake Inn were rewarded a sum of 1000 caps and granted permission to open any business in Tiptonville that they saw fit, provided that they left at least 50% of the Inn intact for later use.

The second part of the expansion, the largest and most crucial part of it, involved the town of Hickman, which sat just off the river and Obien Creek. The town had long been home to a Republic trade post, and the people that lived there were a decent-sized group of roughly 287 settlers that valued their independence. The expansion called for their annexation. An election would soon take place in Hickman, about joining River City or remaining independent. To help influence the results, the Navy was doubling patrols in Obien Creek, to stress that they can keep the people of Hickman safe from raiders and slavers. The Republic also bribed influential citizens of Hickman, and even held a festival celebrating the 25-year anniversary of the trade post being opened. It appeared that the election might just turn out in the Republic's favor.

The rest of the planned expansion was not nearly as exciting. It merely involve building or upgrading trade posts in settlements along the river including: Wolf Island, Columbus, Winford, Howardville, Wynnburg, Hayti, Caruthersville, and Cottonwood point. Any settlements south of Cottonwood Point will not get trade posts until relations with New Egypt improve. With luck, these trade posts will eventually open the door to peaceful annexation, just a Hickman was looking to be.

Confederate Greensboro, North Carolina
Street fights continued with wastelanders turned citizens assisting against the raider tribals. In portions where there weren't battles. Sheet metal and other resources were gathered up and slowly a wall was built around the city. It would take some time for this to reach full completion, so sentries were posted at areas where the walls were incomplete. However, Downtown Greensboro was flourishing with the reopening of stores and the opening of a brand new Casino called "Dixie Casino". The presidents advisers reported to Pres. Mallicoat that the established government of the Confederacy in Greensboro was a good thing for the residents and that they were living quite well. To the south of Greensboro laid an massive radio station which was taken over by a man named "Confederate Doggie" who was broadcasting tales of the Confederate Commonwealth and other stories, along with music. The broadcast tower was one used by Civil Defense and as you could imagine, reached pretty far. The President would of course, monitor the broadcast for Anti-Confederacy sentiment given Confederate Doggie was a black man.

The United Republic

Columbia, South Carolina

"Remember, girls, we're not the Osage!" shouted Aisha Felat from her command post in the former Columbia International Airport. "Spare anyone who throws down their weapons and herd them towards the P.O.W areas to the west of the city, and refrain from setting anyone on fire as much as possible! Priority targets are the former Fort Jackson, the South Carolina State House, and the centre of all resistance, the Williams-Brice Stadium!"

Shouts of affirmation came from the radios set up around her tent, which was set far away from the areas for the detention of POWs for very good reasons. The staccato of gunfire continued to sound throughout the city, as well as the pounding of mortars and the whirring of her Hueys' rotors. She also knew that her soldiers had checked the bridges for IEDs and other traps, and cleared what explosives they could find.

The final thrust was coming, with white supremacist milita being routed from most of their strongholds in the wrecked city, and the valiant women of the UWPU heading towards the WIlliams-Brice Stadium, where the former sporting grounds had been turned into a slave plantation inhabited by the leaders of the militia, as well as their 'civic leader' puppets. The Arena must fall, it is an abomination.

"Do not let the Hueys' go too far without Infantry support! Same for the cavalry! We are not underestimating these fuckers; they might have an old Bazooka or something that can hurt!" They probably don't, but it's best to keep in practice.

One of her scouts then entered the command tent, saying: "The slaves in the stadium are rebelling! Sargeant Daisy has already flown her Huey overhead to give support!"

Aisha turned towards the scout, and said, "Tell the various platoons making it to the Stadium to move faster, then! And are the mortars pointed towards Fort Jackson?!"

After recieving a nod, the General Commander of the entire United Republic Armed Forces said, "Then send someone with a megaphone to tell the fuckers inside that we'll bomb them all into high heaven if they don't surrender! Do I have to do everything myself?"

-----

Once the city had fallen, food, clean water, and medical supplies will be distributed to the surrendered militia and population. The very next day, women, former slaves, and other oppressed people would be gathered and told that after today, they were free. Not merely that, but life will be much better for everyone from now on. Already, she saw the military engineers of the UWPU beginning great public works, even as schools, coffehouses, and other meeting places were to be built in order to reconcile the people with the creed of liberation. Already, she was listing down potential collaborators among the city's population, even as she sent for further reinforcements from the homeland...

Disposition of Forces:

United Republic:

- 5000 Infantry.
- 1000 Cavalry.
- 3 Hueys.
- 6 Mortars.

Columbia, South Carolina:

- 3000 to 4000 militia mostly armed with crude weapons.

Casualties:

United Republic:

- 250 Infantry.
- 150 Cavalry.

Columbia, South Carolina:

- 841 Militiamen.

The United Republic

Savannah, Georgia

Aisha Felat was just finishing her own prayers, her head in the direction of ruined Mecca, the spiritual home of all Muslims. Several hundred women, all of Kurdish extraction, bowed with her, prostrating themselves on their prayer mats. Some might call her form of Islam an 'innovation', a deviation from the original practices of the old world. She called it a return to the original spirit of the law and the exervise of God's gift of free will and Reason. Despite Islam and the Middle East's enduring bad reputation, she knew this, that Islam was once reconcilable with Reason and can be so again. And so her faith endured, helped and not hindered by the United Republic's credo of liberation, which was also compatible with her beliefs.

Looking up as the final prayers were finished, Aisha turned to the north and said, "And now, to the north we go."

Texan Republic, Houston.

Houston was a hot and hostile place to live. The large masses of people who made up its inhabitants were by and large used to this fact. The large destroyed skyscrapers in the city, once a source of pride for the city, now were a sign of shame for the elite of the city. Afterall why had they not been replaced, or at least repaired?

Most people of the city would do as they did every day. Make the long trek to their work station. Whether this meant going to the workshops, farms and ranches, or setting up their stands in the various markets in the town. Much of the signs of independence were still there from before Houston was absorbed into the Republic. Chief among these were the merchant guilds who ran the area before. They had misgivings about the new way Houston was ran and made it known to the central government. All their protests did however was bring the wrath of the Rangers unto the city.

As happens most days when the rangers came through the town the garrison came out to meet them. The 3,000 strong force stationed there by the Republics high command was only partially recruited from the people of the city, with most troops coming from Austin and San-Antonio. This measure did not go unnoticed by the locals. However despite protests from the elite classes the majority of the city did not mind this as the troops provided a sense of security and order, a thing lacking in the mercenary troops the ruling classes from before had employed.

Texan Rpublic, Austin.

Austin during the winter months, or what passes for winter given that 90 degree weather is as cold as it gets in the area, is a vibrant place as befitting its stature as capital of the republic. Most power both political and military is centered in city and almost all new recruits undergo training in the nearby city of Fort Hood. In addition military high-command makes the city’s former business district their home, concerting many of the old buildings there into more militarized versions of their previous selves.

Signs of the conflicts the republic has taken part in are common around the city in the form of statues. The Ghoul Uprisings, the Brotherhood War, The Raider invasion and many others are immortalized in plaques on the bronze and copper of the figures that stare at the residents. The garrison troops guard the government buildings that the statues are close to and are often a part of. In the city at 0600 hours the city's loudspeakers ring with the national anthem and patriotic messages continue for the rest of the day until curfew at 2200 hours.

When the time comes the towns people go to work in the various occupations with minimal delay. The factory and workshops in town begin to give off clouds of smoke signalling their continued operation. At the edges of town farmers plow their fields needed to feed the country and to provide for the exports that bring the nation wealth.

Texan Rpublic, San-Antonio

Shots rang out. The town's last ghouls had been found the week before and after their short and just trial had been found guilty of treason. The reason: being a traitor to the republic. After All any anarchist who resides in the republic must be a terrorist and traitor, it is in their nature of course. The town went on with their day after this as the excitement had run its course. The productivity of the town was lower than that of Houston due to its lower population but the people were eager to reaffirm their loyalty to the republic.

The outskirts of the town had been the target of many raids by the remains of the Brotherhood of Steel due to its relative vulnerability compared to Austin and Houston. But the towns guard and the national army had recently put an end to the raids which brought a smile to many townsfolk.

However the towns law enforcement had been decimated and would have to be replaced. The years of raids had harmed the town and only the presence of national troops and what remains of the town guard kept order. Many expected the texas rangers to brought in which would bring order, but the martial law that would follow was not something that would be liked by the locals. Regardless of their protests however they would be reminded of the standards the republic expected of major cities in the republic.

Texan Republic, Liberty

Liberty. Hot and humid nine days out of ten and housing some of the toughest people in the nation. Due to its proximity to the Louisiana kingdom it has always had a large force defending it from attack. However in recent months the number of troops held there has swelled by a dangerous degree. From a few thousand strong garrison to tens of thousands of troops, and thousands of Rangers preparing for a eastwards expedition. Having reached a critical mass these troops are chomping at the bit in order to move out.

Texan Republic, Dallas Airport

Standing at the back of the Radar station was a tedious task on the best of days, and most definitely not an enviably task. However it was a needed one as at any minute his services could be needed. Or at least that’s what Air Force Colonel Rhodes tried to convince himself of. Every hour on the hour. Day after day of nothing but maintenance and waiting for the day shift observer to arrive and take over.

“We have a contact on the radar sir, it appears to be a civilian airliner from the uhh… pre-war days.”

“Hold on,” having been jolted awake by the tech sergeant, “The hell do you mean a jet?”

“That’s what the machine says sir, should we send interceptors to it?”

Giving a minute to think, “Get the Zero squadrons on the radio, let em know what’s going on”

Airspace above Texan land,Raptor flight, 30 minutes later.

“Dallas Radar, this is Raptor 1-1 we have spotted the UFO, it is in fact a jet, how copy over?”

A moment passes before the response. “You are cleared to try and get closer 1-1, but do not engage until we say so.”

“Understood command we are moving closer now.”

The zeros began moving in closer to the Jet as it slowed down.

Texan Republic, Austin, President's Office.

The opulence of the room was clearly at odds with the man standing before the desk, or perhaps that was that was because of who was sitting in the chair on the other side of the desk who could have him killed and nobody would object to the order.

“So Mr.Soren, have the troops been sufficiently prepared or do I need to wait another month before the City of New Orleans is in our hands?” Said Hayes, President of Texas.

Sweat dripping down his forehead “We are in fact ready Ma’am, is there anything else before we commence the invasion?” Praying to god he did not have to stay in the presence of this woman any longer then he absolutely had to.

Giving a cruel smile, having noticed her companions discomfort, “Right now, no, but I will have need of your talents later my friend.” Waving him away, “Give the order, and feel free to leave before you die of boredom.”

Gulping down his previous reply, “Right away Miss.” Clearly eager to leave he gathered his papers and left the office stopping at the comm room to relay the confirmation of the invasion orders.

River City Republic

The flotilla bound for St. Louis had just left, and with it, the Grand Mayor. This left River Admiral Booth in charge of the city, not that this would change anything (the Mayor and Admiral are very like-minded). Just as the flotilla began to disappear from view, a building along the main strip of River City came to life. Lights turned on, and a neon sign lit up reading, "Embassy of the Great Osage Nation". Stepping outside of the building was a nicely-dressed man of native blood and two nicely dressed assistants. They greeted the city council and the Speaker of the General Assembly, Jason Garr.

"With this embassy," spoke Mr. Garr to a gathering crowd, "the time has finally come for the great people of our republic and the proud people of the Osage Nation to communicate quickly and peacefully. A lot of foul things have been spoken about our neighbors by wastelanders, but make no mistake. If they were the monsters the rumors call them, would they be such a reliable trade partner? Would they not burn our city to the ground, rather than partake in diplomacy? Pay no mind to the ignorant who fear what they do not understand. This embassy is the beginning of a beautiful relationship with a powerful and noble people, who will not only keep the caps flowing to River City, but will also help keep the savage New Egyptians off of our river!"

The crowd applauded, and then quickly dispersed, eager to get back to work making money.

Hickman, Kentucky
The election in Hickman was a success, with 150 citizens voting in favor of joining the Republic, and 100 voting against. The Republic City flag was raised above the Hickman city hall, and as it happened a handful of citizens left to go elsewhere. The population of the town is now 275. Of that number, 16 of them joined the River Navy, and their existing boats were put to use on the river. The Hickman militia was renamed "the River City Republic Police Garrison of Hickman", and patrols were stepped up. The following buildings have begun a process of re-purposing:
-Helena Chemical (to become agriculture supplies and warehouse)
-Hickman Ferry Dock (will focus on repairing old ferry, to make travel across river to the main city an easier task for citizens)
-Fulton County Jail (will become River City Police Garrison HQ)
-Red Rocket Fuel Station (will become diner)
Also ordered is the creation of a basic weapons workshop.

Things were looking bright for the future of the River City Republic, and celebrating the success, many of the more successful traders took to the river and started out east, along the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers, to find new people to trade with; bringing with them many exotic items and powerful chems....and of course, heavily armed security.
Long Live Emperor Tywin II!

The United Republic

Savannah, Georgia

Aisha Felat would send a message through radio directed at the ICA's capital, saying simply and as poetically as possible:

"In the name of Allah, the most beneficiant, the most merciful, to President Luke Mallicoat, with my deepest respects.

"The fact is that there are many Muslims in the United Republic, all living in harmony with Christians, Jews, and even the worshippers of the Great Spirit. And the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) had originally desired that no Muslim should harm any other Muslim.

And so we announce this: Using my responsibility over the wartime operations of the United Republic's entire armed troops, we not only declare the end of hostilities towards your state until further notice, but should rebellion from those who do not understand befall you, our brother in the faith, our armies will make their way through the Carolinas, foregoing potential conquests, to aid you in keeping the lawful term of your rule.

May Allah be with you always.

The United Republic

Columbia, South Carolina

Diplomatic staff had been rushed with haste that in other circumstances, would be regarded as unseemly. And by rushed, a Piasecki Helicopter had been dispatched to meet the Vertibird, bearing some of the best Diplomatic staff in the United Republic and their escorts; men and women from a mixed force of United Republic People's Protection Forces and United Women Protection Units. Co-President Osecola of the Seminole had decided to accept the profferred overtures, despite finding the entire circumstance personally absurd.

Or at least, that's what Aisha Felat had heard. Nevertheless, she would welcome this new age of truce as long as it lasted...especially as Co-President Osecola had sent her another letter, which said:

Take 2000 women and 600 Cavalry, as well as all mortars and Hueys, to Charleston; 2 Fifth-Rates, 3 Sixth-Rates, and 7 Schooners are to be sent to blockade the town. Additional reinforcements under Lieutenant Jenny, another 1500 Infantry and 80 Pathfinders, will join you in the siege. Co-President Senda Hill has vetoed further deployments; events in Louisiana are reaching a head.

Tallahasee, Florida

Sedna Hill was saying to her General Staff, who were looking to her for leadership in Aisha Felat's absence, "The military and civilian councils in Alabama and West Georgia, as well as the Capital, are to mobilize. With the new bazookas, RPGs, and flak guns from the Unity, we can maintain a defensive footing to our west against any atttempt by the Texans to press their invasion further. Prepare refugee camps stocked with food and supplies for the inevitable migration from Louisiana once the Texans stomp them. We need to have the infrastructure to carefully vet the asylum seekers and filter out the rapists, the thugs, and those who won't reconcile themselves to our system."

One of the Generals, a grizzled old Ghoul, would say, "So we're giving up Louisiana for lost?"

A nod at that from Sedna, her mixed-race features glinting in the lamplight. "We are in for a titanic, apocalyptic struggle and we need to prepare as best as we can..."

Nathaniel Green

This 'American Republic' is like a hybrid of the NCR's values and the Enclave's technology, Nathaniel thought as he went towards the large skyscraper where the very suspicious ATLAS Company resided. It's obvious that they are not genocidal; Ghouls get the short end of the stick but aren't exterminated, but their level of tech is immensely foreboding. He pursed his lips. Time to join these folks, if only to get their secret files and find out what exactly is going on here.

When he reached the Receptionist, he would say to the guy/girl in charge, making sure that his handsome looks were empahsized more than his ragged appearance, "I seek employment in ATLAS. Where are the job interviews held?"

And with that began the first phase of his plan.

The United Republic

Columbia, South Carolina

[RETCONNED]

Charleston, South Carolina

General Commander Aisha Felat had met up with Lieutenant Jenny and her troops, getting a proper siege cordon set up around the ruins of Charleston. The outlying ruined suburbs had been cleared of critters and militiamen, and urban fighting had sparked up in the river crossings and crude gardens that were in the north of the city. As usual, efforts were made to seize vantage points, notable landmarks, and sources of food and clean water. The Navy was doing its best as well, chasing away fishing boats and trade vessels, with any slave ships being seized. The mortars were mostly firing blanks to frighten the city militia, but the Pathfinders were now looking for military installations and defenses to pound with actual ordinance.

This is going to be a dirty little war...

Disposition of Forces:

Columbia Garrison:

- 2000 women infantry.
- 400 women cavalry.
- 120 former slave recruits.
- 1000 female recruits.

Siege of Charleston:

- 3500 women infantry.
- 600 women cavalry.
- 6 Mortars
- 3 Hueys.

- 2 Fifth-Rates
- 3 Sixth-Rates
- 7 Schooners

Casualties:

None yet.

Also Retconned.

Background – the Williamson Dynasty

Image

The city of Cleveland had grown to become the centre of power and prestige of the Midwest. Thousands of people called it home, and many more lived in the surrounding settlements and suburbs, either in trade or in agriculture to feed the ever hungry, ever growing city. Of course, it wasn’t always that way. It had been one of the bigger cities in the region before the bombs fell, and thus was one of the targets that Chinese nuclear missiles hit. It had been a long and difficult journey from there, one with no assured success by any means.

The lineage of the Williamson dynasty goes back to the original Vault-dwellers that hid away from the bombs that fell on that fateful day in 2077. That Williamson was documented as a high-level banking executive. However, it wouldn’t be until much later that the Williamsons would gain real control. It first happened in the vaults before they were opened around 12 years later in 2089. With unrest and uneasiness overtaking the vault-dwellers after spending so much time underground with little to no opportunity to leave, the people their soon resented the vault-keepers their guards and the overseer. This lead to a outbreak of outright hostility and violence that was only solved when that same first Williamson, David by his first name, quickly managed to ease the tension and find a manageable and peaceful solution. He, along with a coordinated group of leaders, would run the vault until it was time for it to be opened. Ever the master at negotiations, he soon managed to finagle the rest of the coordinators out of power, until he alone remained. However, it was not him that really started the dynasty. It was his daughter, Marissa Williamson, who officially became the first in the line of The Royal Family. After the death of her father two years later, she quickly stepped in to declare herself the rightful successor to be the ruler of the Vault. She herself was rather successful in the pre-war years and had spent the last few years alongside her father, being mentored and prepared by him.

By this point there was little in the way to stop her from gaining that control, with most of the security forces on her side. From this point on she was the rightful ruler and sole authority of the vault. However, it wouldn’t be for some years the she took on the title of Queen. However, thus began the virtually unbroken line of succession of the Williamson dynasty on the throne.
When the vault doors did finally open, and the vaulters swept out to rebuild the world and to remake it and build a better one, they did so under the dual authority of the Church and the King, the two pillars that would hold together the now growing Kingdom. The surrounding small settlements were quick to fall under their control. With their weapons, technology an expertise as well as GECKs, they were able to transform the Cleveland area quickly, dominating the unaffiliated settlements and getting the smaller, weaker factions to join their side. The vaulters were quick to establish their hierarchy over them, allowing only the wealthiest or strongest to join their newfound “nobility” status. Each of the vaulters were given some sort of title and area of control and deed. With that, they continued to spread out. One by one, bands of settlements or bandits fell under their sphere of influence, declaring an oath to the king and accepting the swarm of Christian missionaries that sweep over the countryside, often heading out before the armies and conquest.

Their expansion was quick and often bloodless. However, as they encountered more sophisticated opponents, some with vaulters at their head or within their number, sometimes rival monarchies, they were forced to engage them in combat. After many wars, marriages, uprisings and conflict, the Kingdom was soon in control of the entire Ohio area. It was then that they found a much tougher challenger.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was another monarchy with a long history and a large and well-trained military. The two kingdoms were at first peaceful, trading growing together, but eventually they were drawn into all out conflict. During the War of Pennsylvanian Succession, then Queen Marissa IV of the Ohio declared herself the rightful ruler of the Commonwealth, based on a rather vague claim of true blood and right of succession, since the real Prince of Pittsburgh had died and the Commonwealth was left with no true-born heir. The war was an effective stalemate militarily, however, upon the death of the Commonwealth’s monarch, the nation had no true born heir to pass the throne onto. A virtual civil war, with a large neighbor eager to overtake the throne left the remaining loyalist government with very few options. They met with the Queen and the rest of the delegates to formulate a solution. This solution guaranteed the right of the Commonwealth to remain an “independent kingdom” however, the succession of the throne would be passed over to the Williamson line. In place of the King, the National Assembly would act as their own government, able to pass laws and run their government independently. Over head was the Archduke of Pittsburgh, who was the cousin of the former line of Rogers, the last line of Pennsylvanian monarchs, and the technical rightful heir to be the next ruler in line. Thus was born what became the Dual Monarchy of the Ohio and Pennsylvania and Queen Marissa was re-crowned again, as the Empress-Queen of a brand new Empire; Empress of the two now united kingdoms, and still Queen of the Ohio.

The next several years were rough for the now two combined kingdoms, yet still separate. In order to smooth things over, the National Parliament was formed, which guaranteed full and equal participation for Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh became the second official capital of the Commonwealth and the old palace refitted for the Williamson dynasty. By 2083, both sides had come together, working closely politically, economically and now socially. The divide between the two lessening from anger and hatred, to neutral, and now to an deep trust and closeness. They remained still deeply nationalistic in a dual sense. Both first to their own nation, and then to the Empire as a whole, in the effort to expand and to continue to grow the nation. For the Williamson dynasty, it had been a quick rise to power and then a steady and strong reign of over a century.

Chapter One: By Right of Conquest
“This world is for those who are born to conquer it, Not for those who dream that are able to conquer it, even if they're right.”
― Fernando Pessoa

Cleveland, United Eerie Empire
The Imperial City

Cleveland was alive and bustling as it always was. At least in its new light of capital of the Erie Empire. The city had certainly come a long way from the ruinous wreck that the first real settlers had found and began to scrap together some form of society many, many decades ago. Those early settlers managed to survive and rebuilt, in some form or another, a small sliver of the city. Development of the ruins was steady, even if it was slow. However, things would soon change that would cause a massive acceleration. That was the opening of the vaults. When they opened and the vaulters poured out, equipped with the technology and equipment. Old-World knowledge, tech and vaulter enthusiasm soon combined with the rugged knowledge and survival skills of the old settlers.

The city was district by district, cleared of rubble, cleared of feral ghouls, super mutants, and raiders. Block by block the city began its full transformation. As the Empire grew, so did Cleveland. As the wealth grew, the city grew grander. Each King, then later Emperor, would add their own personal wealth and expenses to developing the city, often taking a block or a quarter and focusing their efforts there. Sometimes refurnishing old-world luxury buildings or halls of importance as their Palace. Or rehabilitating old city squares and monuments, and dedicating new ones, adding to the special buzz that the city had.

The bigger the Empire grew, the more people moved, lived and built the city. It was the centre of economics, business, politics, and law in the Kingdom of the Ohio, and then the Empire itself. Thus at almost always had the best and the brightest in the city in the region. The Royal Quartiers were usually the best, since they always got priority and the best funding and workers. But even the non-Royal districts and suburbs were rather decent for the most part. However, even still, the city was always in a state of action. In a state of constant building and reconstruction. To make the city a true emblem of both the new world order and the power and ability of the old world, that was the goal. To create a city that would be the centre of the new world, the centre of trade, finance, economics, military, business and politics.

Emperor Alexander rode his horse down the line of soldiers assembled in the square. His uniform was crisp, the standard horizon blue colour matched with an ornate gold trimmings and crests. He wore white gloves and his beret was also white Beret. White was the 3rd colour of the flag, a symbol of both purity and unity. Purity of the soul and the Church, and the uniting factor of the Church and of the two kingdoms together. Black had been the colour and standard of the old Ohio Kings and yellow that of Pennsylvanian ones. The three colours were now stood together, with white being the third colour added for unity between them. As such, white was a common colour used by the Emperors and Imperial Guards and soldiers.

Lined up on both sides were soldiers from the Imperial Guard Regiment. He rode through at steady pace. Sitting high up on the horse, straight. He reached the end of the square and dismounted. His generals and War Staff were waiting, including the Colonel of the Regiment, Jack Morgan. The group of officers saluted the Emperor as he stepped forward. He returned the salute before walking into the Cleveland Military Headquarters.

The meeting room was large. A long table with a large map was positioned in the centre of the room. Maps and lists and unit dispositions lined the walls as well. Junior staff officers worked away in one corner at a few desks. They each stood dutifully at the position of attention before sitting back down and returning to their duties. Each of them took their places around the large table, with the Emperor at the head. Just to his right was the Chief of the Imperial War Staff, Field Marshall John Lipton. Lipton was a man of around 63, heading towards the end of his career of military officer. However, he was active and well regarded as a general. He had risen up from the Cavalry regiments, before serving as a staff officer in the II Corps.
Emperor Alexander nodded at him before speaking.

“Good day. That was quite a formation, Colonel Morgan. Well done.” Morgan smiles and nods, as Alexander continues, “Now, I certainly am sure that you all know why we are here. We on a verge of brand new military campaign. Now, Field Marshall, you may lay out your strategy.”

Field Marshall Lipton cleared his throat.

“Of course, Your Majesty. So, of course, II Corps under Lieutenant General Laura Armstead will be the lead. Taking her lead units out from Pittsburgh, first securing the towns and suburbs there one and for all. Then, moving more east, splitting into two various detachments. 2nd Division will advance forward here. Down this old highway 79 and 70. 4th Division will move out independently along Highway 76, with units in between to act as a thruway for needed reinforcements, supply and unit cohesion and contact. Any and all ability to secure movement northward will also be advised to her. Air support from the ECD is strong, and we have good reason to believe that we will have good weather for close air support missions. Morgantown should be within reach in 48-72 hours, 4th Division should be securing the northern reaches within 72 hours. Then stage two can begin in full.”

Emperor Alexander nodded. He stared at the map, noting the positions of the small marked squares noting the position of each of his II Corps units laid out as well as markers indicating their objectives. Soon, they would be advancing, moving out in the largest military operation conducted by the Erie military in many years.

II Corps Headquarters
Pittsburgh, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
United Erie Empire

Lt. General Armstead had her marching orders. She had received them directly after her dinner. Her Corps would advance out at dawn. They were ready. They had been ready and been prepared for some time. Operation Jackhammer had been in planning for several months, and her soldiers had all been readied and prepared. Orders had been quickly spread around: prepare to advance at dawn.

For Armstead, she had already memorized almost each step of the plan verbatim. For only the sake of being double sure, she had been sure to contact the Air Marshall of ECD to ensure that all plans had been readied and her air support would be there. There was almost no threat of enemy aircraft, so total air superiority was guaranteed. However, she wanted to be sure that her squadrons of fighter/bombers would be there when she needed them. By now though, it had gotten late. Armstead had gone over each detail of the plan one detail at a time with her staff, but now it was complete. There was nothing else to check. The biggest operation in over a decade was a-go and she was in command. Everything was set for tomorrow. Nothing but an act of God would stop this from happening now. The only thing that Armstead could do was sleep. Sleep and wait for dawn and for the expedition to begin for real.

Rebuilt White House, High Point, Islamic Commonwealth of America

The President and his wife had just finished praying, a framed photo of Mecca sat in the office of the President along with photos of other Islamic locations. He had a lot to do today, considering it was the day that Ramadan celebrations for the next year had to be prepared in advance. It would be a parade, fireworks, and at night, the breaking of fast.

He sat down at his desk as his wife ushered to their room. he proceeded to write on his RobCO terminal about life after the war in his daily journal and how the country was doing. He looked out to the bustling street of High Point and smiled, this is how he wanted his world.

Streets of High Point

Walking down the street in front of the White House, you'd hear "Fresh halal brahmin meat for sale! Fresh brahmin milk! Only 5 Dinars!" and walking down further you'd see a clothing shop advertising Islamic clothing for men and women, hand sewn by the store's owner Aya Ebrahim and her son.

The street markets of High Point were an incredible sight to see. You would find all sorts of items for sale, however guns, drugs were illegalized in the Caliphate. Certain drugs were legal with a doctors prescription and a willing pharmacy. Both of which were established in High Point. The High Point Enterprise reported an article on two war-refugees claiming that a huge war to the south in South Carolina took place. Would this make the end of the peaceful faction, or bring an alliance?

From a distance, the skyline of the New York and the surrounding regions shone ever brightly, work never stops in The City That Never Sleeps. Economic activity never stops in this great city. The metro system was the first public transport system to be restored. Even cars could be seen rolling around the wasteland as Republic engineers set to repair the abandoned and rusting vehicles, those that could not be repaired are scavenged for parts or recycled. Even then, only the military, politicians and wealthy elite could afford a restored pre-war car.

The president and his joints Chiefs gathered in the underground command centre that had served them faithfully throughout the years. The reports of the expeditions have finally arrived, so have the files that were stored in the hidden facility up in the Manhatten office tower. A facility was indeed found in Harriman state park, the only problem was that there was nothing much in there, it was a small bunker made to sustain a small population of 10. It seemed to be more like a prepper bunker than a government sanctioned facility. The only thing of value was the small cache of weapons and food, what happened to the inhabitants remained a mystery. A keen-eyed CIA agent, however, managed to find several files hidden in a secret safe with the same Cerberus stamp on it. There the files lead them to another hidden facility in New York Stewart International Airport.

The expedition has slowed down due to stiffer resistance the closer they crawled towards Boston. New Haven had finally being taken with minimal casualties, Newburg would require several more days in order to crack down on the scattered raider forces, some holed up in the old Steward Air national guard base. The CIA has approved of a plan to obtain more information. 5 V-22s and 4 UH-60s were loaded up with JSOC teams, supplies and even several republican guards tempory transferred to CIA control. Protected by 2 AH-64Ds, their objective. The CIA headquarters in Langley Virginia, mission objective, clear out all hostiles and set up an outpost. All surviving data and files found in the building are to be transferred to the new CIA headquarters in Rosevelt island, Cornell Tech building.

United Republic

Siege of Charleston

Aisha Felat had failed to account for how large Charleston was, and how its militia, though suffering from lack of supplies, were better-trained, better-armed, and better-motivated than the ones at Columbia. Right now, her strategy was to sieze strategic positions and crossings to compensate for her lack of numbers, and use Hueys and mortars to look for concentrations of enemy troops and kill as many as possible. But now a dillemma was set before her: Her troops were nearing the heavily-defended Charleston Arsenal, and it was advised that she blow said arsenal up with artillery. But the problem with that was twofold: 1.) She wanted to sieze a workshop to avoid having to constantly import weapons, and 2.) The arsenal had an intact library of Pre-War books attached.

Both were valuable, so it seemed that she'll have to use more advanced tactics; send two platoons of Infantry to divert attention from an assault by Pathfinders to enter the arsenal and sieze it. Taking out her radio, she called Lieutenant Jenny and said, "Operation: Jewel Snatch is a-go. Repeat, Operation: Jewel Snatch is a-go."

The reply from her subordinate was, "Aye, aye, Ma'am! Also, Fort Sumter just got bombed to bits a few hours ago; thought you should know."

Aisha Felat spoke, "The Navy can be a bit too eager; I'd have preferred if Marines just took it. Nevertheless, we'll just rebuild the place once we're done; perhaps with Unity help."

Speaking of those Mutants, what are they doing right now?

Savannah, Georgia

Co-President Osecola of the Seminole had sent word for two Piasecki Helicopters containing diplomatic staff, guards, and gifts of molasses and sugar to be sent to High Point, North Carolina. Note however that said Helicopters would be constantly radioing their peaceful intentions beforehand, with their Muslim Pilots saying, "In the name of Allah, the most merciful, the most compassionate, we come as brothers and sisters from the United Republic, where all faiths live in harmony. We wish to speak with your President and his staff, to negotiate alliances and trade deals."

This message would be repeated as they came closer to High Point; hopefully, this message would be accepted and a pact can now begin...

Pamico Republic

Another Helicopter would be sent containing diplomatic staff, guards, and gifts of sugar, molasses, and coffee; this helicopter would radio the Pamico Republic, saying, "Good citizens of the Pamico Republic! We come from the United Republic south of you, and we wish for ties of exchange between us! We bring coffe, sugar, molasses, and we can promise manufactured goods in bulk! Let us overcome ideological differences and work for a better tomorrow!"

Of course, the Pamico's psuedo-caste system meant that any long-term peace would be fraught with tension. However, the fact was that even that was easier than war, and nothing said the Pamico could not be peacefully converted to their side...

Disposition of Forces

Columbia Garrison:

- 2000 women infantry.
- 400 women cavalry.
- 120 former slave recruits.
- 1000 female recruits.

Siege of Charleston:

- 3500 women infantry.
- 600 women cavalry.
- 6 Mortars
- 3 Hueys.

- 2 Fifth-Rates
- 3 Sixth-Rates
- 7 Schooners

Casualties

Siege of Charleston:

- 35 women infantry.
- 15 women cavalry.

Nathaniel Green

Nathaniel grumbled as it turned out that he was going to be a packmule for a short expedition to Washington DC by the ATLAS Corporation, and that others will have the opportunity to get the secret files he wanted. This meant that unless the 'True' Enclave staged a surprise ambush (which was undesirable), it would have been better to continue on with his training. Nevertheless, as he boarded the V-22 Osprey, Nathaniel took the time to observe the workings of the helicopter; it was way more advanced than even the NCR's Vertibirds, which was concerning. He also took the time to glance at the high-tech guns and ammunition that the CIA Operatives had, as well as the 'EXO' Armor that if things turned right, he was going to train in one day.

At least I managed to get a report to the NCR when I was asleep last night; the chip is still working.

“Communism is the electrification of the whole country.”
- William Powell

There was a palpable air of tension throughout the capitol. Up and down the streets the citizens were lined up, watching the first march of the year. Soldiers clad in tan uniforms made their way down the streets of the capitol, some on horseback, most not. It was a demonstration of power, not just to the opposition but to the people themselves. A symbol of not just what the state could do, but what the state wanted them to be. Most of the crowd were typical proles, dressed in a strange imitation of pre-war fashions. Those of abject poverty stood next to traders, blacksmiths and librarians. It was a homogenous mix of all the Union's peoples and professions in a single group. Children sat atop their parents' backs, while the Union's impressionable youth were given their earliest lessons in the strength of the Party. Most would need such lessons; to vote was a privilege only granted from military service.

Philadelphia was a massive town by pre-war standards, and little had changed since the end of the Great War. Miles of shops, recruitment centers, and even a resurgence of old world infrastructure dotted the city. There were even remnants of old world culture dotted throughout; an area of the city was dedicated to the descendants of the northern internment camps, liberated during the reign of the Federalists. Chinatown, it was called. It bore the name of a homeland they were unlikely to ever see.

The marches finally ended at the City Hall. It was a large, Second Empire-style structure that dominated the city skyline. The exterior was made up of limestone, granite and marble with a tower in the center and a number of balconies across the second level. It had miraculously survived the Great War, and been restored by the Federalists to its pre-war glory. Unfortunately, it then burned during the revolution, and had to be restored again. It was the seat of power in the Union, playing host to the executive office of the Chancellor. Other buildings of a similar style, albeit smaller, were scattered across the plaza. They were homes to the Judiciary and the Central Council. Atop the City Hall’s tower, where once stood a statue of William Penn, now stood a statue of Powell. It had been forged out of the metal from the previous statue, although in a more crude fashion. The crowds gathered, the soldiers formed up, and all put a closed hand across their chest for the national anthem.

* * *

"My people. Sons and daughters of the Union, your destiny beckons. Stand with your brothers and sisters, stand with me, and together we will be undefeated. The past is our faith, the present our conviction, and the future . . . the future is our birthright! Sons and daughters of Columbia, the path toward a better tomorrow stretches out before us. Toward a future that is golden and eternal. But our journey together must cross an ocean of hatred and bigotry, an expanse of lies seeded by the venom of our enemies. Our foe will come to know us. He will come to fear us. But we must not underestimate him. The old world Regime cowers in New York like a cornered animal, and animals they are, soulless and hollow. They seek to make us slaves like the Burghers of old Columbia.”

The harsh words carried over the assembled crowd. Redding addressed a crowd of thousands, maybe even tens of thousands. Many of those gathered shared the same view, all nodding their heads as they muttered words beneath their breath after the opening of the speech. Every Columbian knew well the Burgher menace, as the atrocities of the Federalist regime had been implanted from a young age.

“The enemy sees us as cattle, fit only for the slog. But they will learn their mistake, my people. We will show them the iron and steel beneath Columbian flesh. We shall cast them against the unbreakable rock that is our collective will. We will make them realize the truth that the children of Columbia know in their hearts: that our people, the Columbian nation, is the only pure civilization in the wasteland. Before William Powell first stood up to the Burghers all those years ago we were lost, a broken collection of souls on the verge of damnation. At first we believed he would deliver us to perdition. How wrong we were. Powell saw what was in every one of us, our strength and our indestructible spirit, and made it manifest. The Union was the rebirth of our people. A people fit to stride the Wasteland and shatter our enemies. Sons and daughters of Columbia, you are the embodiment of that glorious legacy, the inheritors of the victory that we fight for every day. You alone are fit to forge the future and the destiny of our people. History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. We shall not suffer the spineless and weak-willed to dictate our path!

When you granted me the privilege of your leadership, I, Joshua Redding, willingly sacrificed myself to the engine of our nation. My only goal to bring our people the absolute and deserved mastery of their destiny. I am humbled by the magnificent example that you my people have set. The workers and artisans among you who toil and ask not for a claim, but accept the honor of your leaders. The soldiers and warriors who burn with cold fire and unyielding resolve never flinching before the guns of our adversaries. The teachers who hold the very soul of our people in their hands, shielding it from the lies of the treacherous and ignorant. You seek reward in service alone. Each of you shares in the greatest glory of them all. You are the true Columbians! Ruthless to those who oppose us, masters of those we defeat, unflinching in the face of adversity. I pity all those who were not born beneath our banner, for they will never know the touch of greatness as we do.

Our victory is imminent. With our hearts tempered in the fires of war we strive forward and take the fight to our foe. Let us never forget the duty that we have taken upon ourselves. Our enemy is tenacious and bold. The Burghers dared to turn their weapons upon that which we hold dearest. Our cradle, our homeland, our Philadelphia! This monstrous act unleashed the whirlwind of our wrath! Our guns never tire, and we beat back our foe! The path we have chosen is not an easy one. Struggle is the father of all things and true virtue lies in bloodshed. But we will not tire, we will not slacken, we will not fail! In the blood of our warriors comes the price we must pay. Blood alone moves the wheels of history. And we will be resolute! We will fear no sacrifice and surmount every difficulty to win our just triumph!"

Raising his fist in the air, the new Chancellor proclaimed his desire for the Union. The simple gesture made like a wave through the crowd, until every man, woman, and child held their fist clutched up towards the blue sky. "Hail Redding!” They shouted, their cries were deafening and lasted long after Redding had left the stage.

This was only the tip of the iceberg, the demeanor of the Chancellor only seemed to portray an inner desire for more, and more down this path. The Union’s days of incessant bureaucracy, and internal strife was finished. Instead replaced with a firm grip that mandated that the nation fight under the banner of Chancellor Redding, the sole leader, and only leader for the Union. While the opposition only saw him as a mad dictator, the Columbians felt his passion, and desire to bring back the glory days when they were strong and prosperous. Most would wish for this, despite the costs, and wanted to have a piece of the dream to call their own. As such, it wasn’t long before orders were being sent, instructions going left, and right as the war machine once more was activated, going full-throttle as every Columbian prepared for the coming days.

Into the Lion’s Den

Once, such a long time ago, the bar had been lively, full of those with the money, but mostly those with only a little to spare. Once upon a time, dice were thrown and cards were played, and alcohol was served, just like any other tavern. A long time ago, it had been alive with the hustle and bustle of the poor and the suddenly rich, it had been filled with shouts of anger, loss and euphoria. A place that any gambler would have fit right in, even met some friends along with it, if it were only once upon a time.

Of course, the Tavern was now empty, the drinks festering away and souring inside their tanks and bottles, and the tables and chairs showed their signs of rot. The blackjack, poker and all the other gambling tables' beautiful green felt was a dilapidated and fading brown, growing darker by the day, a sad reminder of the fun and not so fun times that were once held on them. The occasional card or coin laid around on these ghostly places, reminding all who visited of the bar's success, of the life that it had before the Great War and the horrific tragedy that was brought with it. While the Tavern had been spared the worst of the fallout, it had died in its own way. The owner had packed up and fled before the bar began its inevitable decay, and its patrons followed, many of them leaving their winnings behind. A bar that catered to a hundred a day was now lucky to get a dozen a month, each of them picking through the wreckage left in the Great War’s wake.

Today, the Tavern served only one man, and that man sat at the bar on an old high backed wooden chair, nursing a bottle of whiskey he’d had to bring himself. He wore a tattered old suit, jacket, shirt, trousers and all, that might have once been the cause of envy, but now it looked as old as the felt on the Gambling Tables. Dark, scuffed, and torn in places, similar to most who survived the hellish wasteland. He was waiting, for who he didn’t yet know. That was the way these things worked, everyone was kept in the dark until all the ducks were in a row. For now though, the man nursed the bottle of whiskey until it was his turn to serve the motherland.

"It is in the best interests of the Council to have our eyes in as many places as possible, our agents in as many cities as possible, and our ears pressed against the doors of the wasteland. Not only does such an attitude serve the Council by teaching us more about the political landscape, but it serves our economic interests marvelously well."
- Minister of the Interior Rachel Abaroa

It had taken several hours each to get them Into New York, and that didn’t include the months of planning and preparation. Anxiety wore patience thin, agitating each of them as they waited for their turn to enter the American Republic, but no amount of distraction could make them forget the incredible task they had been given. The Union told them it was counting on them. That message had been given to dozens of other agents operating in other settlements in the same manner. This immense burden pressured them to ignore the discomfort and press forward.

New York was an ideal locale for a cell. Distrust of outsiders, an over-equipped military and a propensity for prejudice. People were looking for another way to vent, to deal with the problems that they faced.

This particular cell’s arrival was staggered across many hours and four caravans, one of many precautionary measures to ensure zero suspicion. A dozen operatives had been tasked for the mission. Their leader, Montag was a veteran of several assignments. As such, he walked with a certain self assuredness that came with years of proud service. His second would follow him three hours later with a different caravan. If everything went to plan, he would retrieve their weapons from a local courier company paid to hold them a week prior. If things didn’t follow as planned, there were a number of backup plans set in place. They cared little for the wellbeing of a local criminal or an unfortunate militiaman.

The last of the operatives came next, Haley and Wilson. They would pose as a couple, which would hide them among so many other impoverished immigrants seeking a new start. Being lovers only made the facade of desperation more believable. They would get through the easiest out of the bunch, blending in with all the rest. Seeking stability in a wasteland that was always struggling.

Theirs was a mission of great importance, and they knew this. The weight of responsibility seldom left their mind for long.

Delmarva Peninsula

Great efforts were being made to push into the fertile lands on the Delmarva Peninsula. Even before the Great War, it was the Peninsula that held a great many farms that fed the pre-war population. In exchange for more ration cards and greater access to amenities, citizens were encouraged by the government to migrate south from Philly and Baltimore and settle on the Peninsula. This initiative saw an influx of poor or otherwise destitute families. To achieve this daunting task, a great deal of farming equipment and construction projects would be required. Most of the building and field clearing would have to be done manually, but a handful of Brahmin teams were relegated to assist. Though, they wouldn’t be nearly enough.

State Prospectors and unsanctioned scavengers flocked to the area to root around in portions of the abandoned pre-war towns. Numerous small communes were beginning to take root, settling down for the long haul. The influx of people and valuables, also brought unsavory characters. Snake oil peddlers selling homemade remedies, thieves looking to swipe some goodies, and bandits looking to strong arm their way into the equation. To keep order, the Third People’s Army Corps was brought in to watch over everything.

It would be sometime before the project came to fruition, but should it succeed it would greatly benefit the Union as a whole.

Pres. Mallicoat was sitting at his desk when his terminal started flashing with a message received button from the Vault's terminal. He pressed open on the message to reveal a message from the mysterious Institute that people have spoken so much about. He decided, since they were so technologically advanced that he was going to go for the gold, not the silver that the Institute leader offered. He begun typing a reply to the message.

Dear Director Johann Brown,

We will be pleased to give you supplies, Med-X to fix the medicine shortage in the Commonwealth. However, Med-X is hard to produce by us here in High Point even though we can grow poppies and extract the opium from them. We can make a variety of various opiate medications but it's very labor intensive for us as it's a seed to syringe process. So, if we are to get something in return. We expect the very best technology you can deliver. We will begin shipping as soon as you reply to this message. But do keep in mind. I say the very best, not the outdated thrown to the back technology.

He had cleverly deceived the Institute director into thinking that Med-X was much harder to produce and he knew that the Institute held Synths, many rumors from the north had spread down. He wanted a piece of the pie so he could reduce manpower in the Islamic American standing army and give some men time at home with their families. But he didn't want to start an all out war with the Institute as he had heard about the Brotherhood-Institute war and how they acquired an airship.
