Reading the "go both back and forward in time" was the most exciting thing I've read in a while, context considered of course. I'm psyched!

I like this idea. Already working on a character you may or may not have a decent influence on this. A Henri Jomini if you will, and expanding on a Northern Country called 'Aswen' throughout my posts. App will be up in an hour or so. Balancing the Battalion is hard

Cybulskan colonial rebellion when :p

Also I've modified the Cybulskans' stats to reflect the long rifles and added their gear.

This is a pretty cool idea. I hope it's successful.

Heavily W.I.P at the moment, I'm aiming for a devoted acolyte of a specific cult within the Canon, to the point of perhaps a dangerous level of monotheism. A coarse, fanatical and monastic fellow, eager to spread the good word and equally willing to either turn the other cheek or burn the heretic, depending upon circumstance. In terms of regiment, I'm really unsure. Probably very disciplined irregulars.

Captain App
Character Name: Archimandrite-Captain Thomas Rysick "Black Tom"
Age: 29
Appearance: Black Tom is a brute of a fellow, by the sight of him, thickly built and stout with a head of rolling black curls and an unpleasant visage, the result of boughts with smallpox in childhood and a close encounter with a cavalry sabre in youth. Beyond his bruised, scarred and unnervingly cheerful face, Tom is notable for the simplicity of his style of dress, merely the plain white uniform of his order, the red mantle of his position as Archimandrite-Captain and a pair of meticulously polished and well worn boots.
Strengths:
-Lion's Roar The Captain is well placed in command, for much the same reasons as he is well placed as a preacher. Though usually subdued and classically humble, Black Tom is famed among his men for a booming, commanding tone of voice and a clarity of command rarely shared among his fellows. Rhetoric, and the stirring up of the faithful, have been his occupations since his earliest years.
-Oath of the Lion Thomas was raised a monk, and still abides by his vows to the Lion. To that end, he avoids excess, pride, vice, avarice, and all sin wherever he can discover it in himself. Poverty is not his concern, and he is more than willing to suffer in the name of his beloved faith. The sight of a captain at prayer in simple robes, eating among his men and giving away the very buttons of his coat to the poor does tend to inspire a body of devoted men, and the absolute refusal to commit any outrage on conquered peoples outside of cases of heresy or excessive vice tends to quell insurrection.
-A Sweet and Fitting Thing Why should a man worry for his own death in battle when he is assured a place beside the Lion? Black Tom, in his self-denying fanaticism, rarely concerns himself with such things as his own survival. While it may perhaps run the risk of his constant demise, he has raised himself in prayer and exaltation often enough to cast aside fear of the foe, and has been known to throw himself wildly against a superior foe.
-Spread the Word Thomas sees it as his duty to spread the word of the Canon, but more specifically of the Lion, wherever he may. To that end, he is willing, unlike many of his brothers, to consort with pagans and heretics, and even to permit their vices, so long as they seem willing to hear the good word.
Weaknesses:
-Abjure the Flesh There are positives to ignoring mortal needs and all luxury, certainly, but there are many negatives, too. Black Tom simply does not fit with aristocratic society, finding himself incapable of participating in the drinking and debauchery of his fellow officers, and in this incapability he has made a good number of enemies, and very few friends. His piety is regarded by a good number of men and women as sanctimonius, and besides even that his disdain for pragmatism in scrambling for supplies and placements is understandably damaging too.
-God is my Shield When a man doesn't worry about his own death, he tends to bring it on earlier than he would like. Fanaticism can drive a man to amazxing feats, but more often it will lead him to pointless stupidity and violent death. Perhaps dropping all but your knife to swim alone across a river to attack the foe is heroic, but it is also almost certain to lead to death. Thomas has merely been lucky thus far.
If he will not be taught... If the pagans will not hear the good word, and refuse his preaching, however, Thomas will show little mercy. If they will not hear the gospel from a messenger, they will hear it from its speaker in the heavens. He has little patience in this regard, and his temper as regards heresy and paganism often switches erratically and dangerously, as he judges whether a people will or will not convert.
The Chosen will know their own. Social niceties, manners and etiquette interrupt the bonds between men. Sinners cloak themselves in finery as rotten meat in silk, and Thomas steadfastly refuses to take part in the masquerade of aristocratic manners. Of course, to others, this makes him seem, whenever he is driven out of his usual humble silence, abrasive, coarse and peasant, all of which, of course, he is.

Captain App
Character Name: Kasch "Leśnik" Fletcher
Age: 30
Appearance: Red is considered his 'Dress' color, but he normally wear's the same color as the Battalion in battle
Strengths:
  • The Natural - "They say 'Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.' Most of related me to the latter, the man born to fight, and its what I've been doing my whole life it seems..."
  • The Unfettered - "I care not for belifes you hold or the rules you impose upon myself and my men. I will accomplish my goals upon the path I see fit without a care or restraint. The consquences be damned"
  • Among His Men - "The difference between Officer and Private, Cook and Musketman, means little to me. My men are my brothers and sons, and will be treated as such. If we are to march through hell, I shall be leading the charge"
  • Man of the Lands - "I was born into the woods, and it was where I have spent my days, and where I hope to continue such. They are where I shall fight, if given the choice, and where I shall live."
  • The Statue - "Stoic? Well I suppose it has been said before about my state of philosphy. At the very least the men enjoy having a calming and collected figure around them when, well to put it simply, the shit begins to take to the air like a bird"
  • Off-Cuff - "I believe in a flexible strategy and leaving as many options as possible up in both life and battle. I'm not one to be held down by constricting and intriqute battle plans, and I would rather roll with the punches. I'll find a way to come out on top, I assure you"
Weaknesses:
  • The Farlander - "I will not hide it. I was not born upon this land, and it has caused me my far share of troubles, both with my superiors and peers alike. Nevermind many of the commonfolk, or our more, 'patriotic' souls within the Battalion."
  • The Sound of Shells - "I have seen war before, that is true enough, and I would rather not continue to see such, even as it haunts my dreams. There is no glory to be found upon these fields of death, and I would like nothing better than to leave them in the dust of steps. But alas, it seems I am too good to leave such a red soaked life behind, and have too many I do not wish to abandon."
  • The Silenced and Shunned - "I will admit it happens quite often; that being the shunning of the opinions of a man deemed 'free-thinking' nevermind my status as a non-native nor of prominate blood"
  • Holiday's Man - "While I do observe the faith of this great land, I see little reason to allow it to influence all aspects of a man's life. A man should be free to see things as he wishes, not as another prescribes to him to see."
  • Short-Sight - "If you're searching for the many who will plan out detailed plans and months long campaigns and seiges, I'm afraid you've requested the wrong man."
  • Protector - "My men are my Family. You can push me around, and slander me all you wish, but lay a hand or spit a word at any one of my men, and I will personally see to that you lose the ability to do such again. Mark my words."
Personality: Fletcher is a seemingly relaxed and carefree man, a utilitarian if you will, even in the face of combat. Though outwardly distant towards other officers and outsiders and perhaps even cold due to his blunt nature, he finds immense pleasure when among his own men, laughing and spending time with them as if they were family, giving off a steadfast and solid, yet warm aura that refuses to allow you to leave once you get involved with him on a personal level.
Biography: I'm not sure what exactly who wish for to be revealed about myself or nature that you can not come to understand when I walk upon the field of battle. Though, I assume it would be naive to assume such an organization such as this ignores entirely the history of a man. I was born in a distant land to the north, we will call it Aswen, for the sake of your report. I was born into a poor man's family in a coastal town; my father an old soldier long past his days of working the land around our estate, the gift of a late friend or so I was told at a young age upon questioning the matter. My mother was laid to rest upon the birth of my younger sister some two years minor to myself, leaving me without much in the ways of womanly figure in my life, and no doubt arriving at the source of my troubles with them down the road. Seeing as a needed work, and there was plenty to do, I took work not only upon my fathers land, but in the selling of forrested goods for a moderate price. It was far from a comfortable living, but for seven years after my seventh year upon this world, it would do. But alas, I was forced to join up with a passing Reigment of Soldiers one day, off to fight in a board war with a neighbor to the south. I would find myself among their ranks, hoping to earn simply coin to send back to my young sister and ill father. And so, off to war I went, for five long years and by some miracle I survived through it all, returning home a season man of age twenty one. Only to find the family estate had been burned by Cavalry in a skirmish some years back, my father and sister both loosing their lives upon such. And left I was with only my skills as a soldier, a rank of Sergeant in the army of a small northern nation, and little coin or food to be found in my pockets. All that was left was the simple choice of becoming a man at arms, one for hire. Taking what little I had I climbed aboard a merchant ship setting out for the Empire, and no sooner than arriving did I find myself in a Company of Imperial Light infantry, the only experienced soldier among them, I was promoted to Lieutenant, despite my birth by a welcoming Captain. We would go touring about Imperial Lands, engaging in battles and skirmishes of sorts along the boarder regions, until one day when our beloved Captain was struck by a guns round, and relieved of his legs. The Senoir officer on the scene, I took control of the Battalion and lead them in a variety of manuvers, somehow managed to evade destruction and return to the safety of our camps. As a reward I was promoted for my efforts in the endevor to that of a Captain at the age of twenty four, having received no schooling as an officer, as many of my compatriots had at the time, at least among our Eastern Imperial Station. I would hold this post for another two years, until a disagreement with a junoir officer of another Battalion, a more politically favored one, found myself and staff, as well as a few Senior Footmen I had stolen away reassigned to the 'Fighting Fours' and young Battalion made up of mainly men from the Western Reaches of the Imperial Domain, and luckily for me, mainly that of Former or generational Farmers and woodsman, rather than those from larger cities, as was the case with my earlier assignments. This was no doubt instilled upon me as a punishment, as we were soon to be sent out to the less desirable colonial outposts, loathed by many officers, where there was little action aside from occassional skirmishes with sad excuses for soldiers from native forces. I instead, took great though hidden joy in being among the company of my own stock of men, and went to work training and drilling them up in their skills of woodland fighting and living, and teaching them the merits of independent action, even aside from the Company level. Unexpected to the ears of my peers back in mainland stations, my force was succeeded, despite being little over five years old, having only existed a year before my apppointment as a commander. Upon our fourth year together we succeeded in routing a large force of Native Soldiers from a colonial trading town. Rather than being rewarded for our merit, we were to be reassigned to a station loathed even more than a backwater colonial post, as we were transitioned to one of the Empire's even more backwaterish towns.

Battalion app
Battalion name: The 44th Battalion - "Fletcher's Farmers""
Unit type: Light Infantry
Uniform: About Right
Banner: [Let me get back to you on that when I have time to make one]
Marching song: HereA song commonly sung in the Western Reaches of the Empire, where many of the 44th's men originate from. High Germany is replaced with 'far off Acci', or whatever land they are to be deployed to and England with the Empire. It was quickly adapted as their marching song following a deployment to the outer colonies.
Standard gear: Standard Imperial Loadouts for Light Infantry, though they are known to carry additional gear such as small spades that can easily be stored in one's gear and are not much longer than the average forarms, making them simply tools for digging holes and the like. They also carry Hatches upon their packs, though these are mainly used as tools rather than melee weapons. Most recongnizable is the use of straw hats upon their heads when not in combat, and the extra gear their carry such as flints, compasses, extra rope, and a myriad of other small trinkets used for traveling through the wilderness, as well as forges for the making of their own bulets.

Description: The 44th Battalion is a group of hardy men from the Western Reaches of the Empire, generational carpenters, woodsmen, farmers, and craftsman of all sorts who grew up upon the land and in small towns. They're far from complainers, and will see to it that any task they set out to commplish is reached in due time, even if they do not hold the iron discipline of more refined Imperial Battalions, they make up with it with their fierce loyaty to their commander, who many see as a father despite age differences as well as their undying spirits and wills upon the field of battle. It is upon this field of battle they are known for their abilities to not only fight but to live in and with the land, and for their resemblance to pack mules in their abilities to work and march for long periods of time. Off the battle field they are a close-nit bunch of men, many from the same towns, who are always known as lively company whenever Battalions get together, and hardy drinkers as well. Their name, "Fletcher's Farmers" comes from their strange habit of growing fruits and vegetiables when on extended deployments, and the background of many of the units members, being generational farmers.

1st company lieutenant: Sawyer "Sam" Korson | 27 | A long time friend and Junior of Fletcher's since arriving in the Empire and a trusted comrade
2nd company lieutenant: Henri "Whiskey" Ferson | 25 | A Junior Officer who transfered over to the 44th with Fletcher and heaviest drinker in the Battalion, next to perhaps Fletcher
3rd company lieutenant: Jameson "Doc" Long | 24 | A Junior Officer who transfered into the 44th two years ago after having ran away from medical school to travel the Empire, but ended up in with the 'Farmers'

It seems all together fitting an proper that I record the thoughts that have fallen upon me about my fellow officers whom I am to spend quite a deal of time with in the coming days and months of our station in this Backwater post. I cannot say that many of the names on this list are familar to a man who is often shunned from the ring of higher birthed commanders, being a foreign commoner, though I have made it a point to gather what information I can on these men and their units, as to give me some semblence of understanding upon our future interactions and meetings. And to as not let myself or men fall into an unfavorable situtation upon the actions of another, should it come to such a point.

Thus as follows are reflections upon the small gleeming piece of information I have been able to scavange among my officers and other contacts about such men;
~Colonel Horatio Fellus~ "As I would expect from an Officer of Nobility and Schooling, he is quite the social and reglious man, his force seemingly made up likeminded indivisuals. More or less the same men I have dealt with many a time on previous station in the inner lands of the Empire, and I do not see our time together going much different than it has previously. Though I do fear he may not take kindly to my, shall we say, ideals on life and mind."

~Captain Ebenezer Paschalis~ "Ah, Eb, the first man upon the listing of fellow Officers I have heard of, though I have not had the pleasure of a discord with him at any point in either of our careers. I know him as a seasoned officer who can be trusted in dire situtations from the reports I have read of his action in Acc. I dare say I would enjoy sharing a bottle of Brandy between us and perhaps discusse tactics or our time in Acc, though my tour was but a brief one, if he would be so inclined to do so, despite the differences in our schools of battle and mind. I also wish to engage in drills with his men, as I feel both ours could benefit from such interactions, despite our positions upon the field of battle."

~Captain Virgil Jean Louis Philippe Montbeliard de Hohenfriedberg~ "Captain Virgil, the Son of a Duke. I can not say I know much about trhe man himself aside from the occassional leaf upon the grape vine, as I shall put it here. From what I have been able to piece together he is quite speak of the ladies in whatever station he is occupied and has no doubt had his fair share of adventurers both in the sheets of the bed and deep in the bushes of the wild, and such actions have earned him both fame and dispostion from those around him. As for my opinion on such a matter, I'll leave to the meeting of the man, rather than idle gossip of those in small towns and pubs. That being said, I will continue to hold my reservations about a young blood from a noble family. Though, I will say I look very much joyfully towards the reunion with the 'Riders' who I had the pleasure of briefly meeting upon my time in Acc. I do worry, however, how such actions will reflect upon him in his meetings and time with the Colonel."

~Captain Clay~ "Another Career officer like Eb, though I know little of this man aside from the fact that he too started as a simple footman like myself, and is known wide for his tendencies as a brutally fighter and strict commander of his men. I had doubt's that such a group of soldiers could exist more ridged in their chasity of life's pleasures than that of our appointed Colonel, but those men within the 'Iron Wolfes' as they are called, see to be a close runner up for such a dreadful prize. He appears to be seasoned enough, but his unit seems fairly green, not that I doubt a 'will-do' and ridged man such as himself will fit in quite well with the ideals of our Commander. For better or worse."

~Captain Marczynski~ "A force of murders, debters, and other ruthless convicts of a myriad type; all lead by a ruthless enough to keep them from pillaging the nearest town and making away with the goods, is about the best way I can describe the 'Blackfeet' upon pondering the matter. Not that I hold any ill will towards them or their commander. Known for their superb use of Rifles, which I hope to have the pleasure of seeing in action, and seasoned frontiersman, like may of my own men, they seem altogether a comptent force lead by a strong willed and equally comptent Captain, who I can safely say I enjoy the thought of having such men in the company of my own, and would not be opposed to forming tighter inner unit bonds in the time we spend together in this dismal place."

~Captain Strachan~ "I've heard much about this man and his Battalion and look forward to our time in his company. I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting him, but I am told he is a generally more constrained version of his fellow countryman and easier to enter a conversation with, himself being known as quite a charismatic commander, both to his own men and others, including his peers, despite some issues with his lineage. I enjoy the idea of being in the company of another man so devoted to his men in a manner such as my own. Though, I will say I hold reservations for his lack of formal or even informal understanding of military tactics, given their position of men of the line. Alas, I cannot help but feel such a man will be a great assest to our Regiment in a myriad of ways."

~Captain Rosicrucio de Dangomor~ "An interesting man, and quite a different turn from many of the other 'high-standing' men among our Regiment. He appears to be more of an aloof, or rather free-spirited to put it better, of a man carring little for rank or position and more content with living out his life upon his own thoughts, though not quite in the same way as our own Captian Virigil in the self-fufilling type of pleasuring. Though, I must say, that results of such a life style upon his soldiers, nevermind their foundations of simple volunteers fills me with worry as to their preformance in combat should the time come. His ambitious also sets me off in an odd way, and I fear for the livelyhood of his men when lead starts to fly, and I feel as though it would be best to distance myself from connection with him; our ideologies similar, but methologies and sources quite different indeed."

~Captain Rubert~ "If you were to search upon the land for a man as different as a potato is to an apple, in comparison to myself both in character and position, Captain Rubert would fit the bill so well you would not be to embarressed to find yourself mistaken that he had wrote it himself. Raised by holden hands and silver spoons, he seems to me little more than a young boy who wishes to form a battalion as if it were a club of boys walking around town claiming to be Imperial Regulars. The shine of their horses hoves seem to be but a cover for the inexperience of combat of both their commader and troops alike. He is dangerously light with his men and seems better suited to raising horses than to raising men. I truly worry that such a man will become a liability in combat."

~Captain Fletcher~ "I suppose it is only fitting that I would include myself in such a report upon the thoughts of officers within the Regiment seeing as I am one, adbeit unwillingly to a degree. I am Captain Fletcher, 'Lesnik' or 'Fletch' to those of my fellow officers or men in private quarters. I am a native of a Northern land, Aswen, a country about a fith the size of the Empire, domains withheld, and have spent the last sixteen years of my life in the shoes of a soldier, nearly half transfering from one of the Empire's backwater holes to the next in some vain attempt of my enemies to discredit me, but thus far they have been met with little success."

~Captain Diop~ "Thus far the first female Captain among us, and while rare is not unheard of, espically for a post such as this one. The so called 'chicken woman' as various sources have identified her as appears to be a relatively well rounded Commander. Nothing particular about her seems to call out to me in any respect, not to insinuate that such is a bad quality among a Commander, as she seems at least semi competent, if a bit stubborn, but with a calm resolve that is greatly appreiacted by all in the heat of combat. Though I will say her units appears to be one of strict discipline, but on a lighter scale than perhaps Captain Clay, nonetheless has left her Artillery Battalion as a sharp instrument within the Regiment that I see as becoming quite useful in our future operations within the Province."

~Captain Jalair~ "As opposed to Captain Diop who could easily be forgetten upon a few rotations, Captain Jalair is not a name nor man who will easily leave my memory. I am told they are a group of warrior from some archaic land who at one point had been the land of great conquers and horseman, the latter quality only remaining at this point in history. First I must speak about their Captain, who while most would assume would fall into a similar trapping as that of the Highlander Lieutenants, he is instead a very analitical man, who I have heard great things about in his respect to logistic operations; a welcome skill within any Regiment, as I do not see myself nor men relying on the Colonel for such operations more than are needed. He is certainly a man I would enjoy spending an evening with trading stories of times long past, whether they be our own or that of our forefathers. As for a unit, they appear to be even more of odd mix than that of the Highlanders. Perhaps more rounded in their abilities as a unit that the headstrong beserkers of the Highlander Battalion, the men under Captain Jalair appear off setting in thier tradition of using bows among other less fashionable weapons in direct combat as they attempt to fill a role both similar to Line and Light Infantry. Seeing this unit in combat is certainly something I must make sure of while assigned to this post."

~Captain Adler~ "A noble born familar of some name that is unfamilar to me, not that may would be to a many of my station and care about that of noble blooded affairs, with similar views on life and mind to my own, though he appears to take a more militant and active stance on many of these matters, espically in regard to the clergy and noble houses, where as I could simply care no less about their opinions or ideals, which makes me worry he may be even more of an outcast to his fellow officers, of noble birth or not, than myself or Captain Cibor. Aside from that, not much seems to strike me about this man or his unit, the latter of which seems relatively unremarkable based on what records I've scavanged from the Wars in Acc where I am told they have fought, myself highly doubting their men are any more skilled with their weapons than my own or those of the Native Scouts among us."

~Captain Gounelle~ "A strange a shrewded noble whom seems more afraid of his own shadow than that of enemy fire, for better or worse. From what I can gather his unit is an odd one of heavy line infantry, no doubt more of a novelty than a practical force in this province and its woodland bound enemies, and that they along with their commander have survived a large number of unfornate events, though I get a feeling not all would be left to poor luck of the unit itself. Aside from its misfornuted flled service record, the Unit seems somewhat subpar, lead by a commander who's gift for battlefield knowledge would be better leant to a Light Infantry Captain or that of a desk aid, depending on whom was ask. The only thing they appear to be good at is getting shot at, and we're looking for fighters, not sheilds here."

~Captain Eliza Vista~ "Our second female Captain, and one who is certainly more interesting than that of the former, this time commanding a unit entirely made of women, that some would consider a bit of a novelty like that of the Heavy Line Infantry, or perhpas the bows of the Steppe Battalion, though at least the latter seemingly can use them efficently. Their commander, as one would assume, is of noble birth though I have heard she is quite progessive, if an all female Battalion didn't already paint her that way, and she reminds me quite a bit of Duchess Alicia. However, he unit appears relatively average and without much battle experience, leaving me a bit worried how they will preform when they first come under fire, any presumptions about their compisition of females aside."

Can we have a sort of system where each level for each trait of the battalion has an example? Like:
Level 1 Marching Speed=Going at a Turtle's Pace
or
Level 2 Accuracy=Stormtrooper

Or something
Call me Warg or Antic
Yeah, u do that and I’m gonna have to force u to pull a France, and then a Vichy-Wargloria, after one of his allies proposed pulling an Italy

The areas and battalions you all have created have much to bring to the table, for which I am thankful.

Looking forward to it!

I hope that comes to fruition! I think it's pretty rare to see RPs like this set in this time period (which many people seem to gloss over), personally, the age of musket and shot is one of my favourite periods of history, and you don't see a lot of games use the period as much as games set in the medieval or modern age

Personally, I like the Blackfeet and the Native Scouts. Lots of potential for effective counter-insurgency units.

Paschalis is almost complete. Just need to draft a unit description and add Eb's personality.

I'd like to ask, what is the general geography of the region? Is it like Colonial America? (with large settlements but outside that large woods and mountainous terrains?) Or something more like the Netherlands (flatlands with some hills)

The OP has files that describe cities and their nearby terrain (and the map gives a general idea) to a certain degree.

Captain App
Character Name: Samadou “Sam” Diop, “Chicken Woman”.
Age: 36

Appearance:
Image

Lean of frame and short of stature, Captain Diop of the Chandakot Janissaries is a textbook example of the word “spare”. Androgynous, even. And double-jointed, to hear her troops say it - hence the nickname, “Chicken Woman”. Her wide cheeks are laddered with precise rows of tribal scars, and her skin is the colour of old leather. It glistens in torchlight, like oil on water. Her voice could be well described as husky; it carries well when raised in a homey war-chant - and her dark eyes are deeply set in narrow lids. It gives her hard stares when angry and bright smiles when pleased. Slightly deaf, she is none the less not without a certain dignity.

Strengths: As a leader of men or, in her case, women; Captain Diop’s cardinal strength is how damn well she appreciates discipline and regulation. Soldiering, like prayer or dancing, has one defining characteristics shared by all - a right way to do it. In the khol-black eyes of Captain Samadou Diop, the key to that secret lies in unceasing drill.
Weaknesses: Samadou’s main failing as an officer is, perhaps, her sense of personal pride. It leaves her prickly, pompous and, worst of all, hesitant to admit when she is wrong. In tandem with this strolls a leisurely love of theatrical uniforms, dashing appearances and a vast love of praise.
Personality: Calm and level-headed, Samadou probably comes off as reserved to the point of standoffish to those unfamiliar with her. That is not to say the so-called “Chicken Woman” cannot flash a smile, however. She merely reserves it for her confidants. Past her prickly self-assurance, hers is the demeanor of an asp under siege. Calm. Opaque. Poisonous.
Biography: Born from good stock in the tribal hinterlands of distant Chandakot, Samadou's origins are none the less undistinguished. The forth daughter of tribe known more for artisans than warriors, her career may well have stranded in calm mediocrity. That is, if not for the Regency Affair. To most, Chandakot is a dim and distant realm - a stretch of coast on the western reaches of the Stalwarth Sea. Its main claim to infamy is its longstanding matriarchy - for in Chandakot, law dictates that while men might command, ownership of land is reserved for women. That ownership, and the rule dependent on it, has recently become submitted to the Dallic Empire -- In word and ink, at least - if not entirely in spirit. Enter then one Captain Diop. As the price of Dallic assurances for her continued rule, the Majd of Chandakot has dispensed a unit of her Janissaries to serve the three-toned Banner. This, then, is Samadou's lot. To preserve, through service in foreign lands, the fading dream of her motherland's freedom. So far, that tour of service has brought Samadou to Dangomor. It has endeared her neither to the culture or its inhabitants, but that's as well as may be. Her role there is, at least in her own khol-rimmed eyes, to act the part of overseer. Both of her own honor, to be sure - and that of her clan. It is the wealth of their tithes and storehouses which bought the iron that cast her units cannons, after all - and Samadou takes nothing if not seriously the duty of their care. Whether that is a fact which will, at some point, clash with her growing love of honor and martial pageantry remains to be seen.

Finally making my app contribution!

Captain App
Character Name: Altan Jalair
Age: 26
Appearance: Altan is neither tall nor short for his people at 5'7'' and continues to bear a youthful appearance despite the hardships of his upbringing. Although he often continues to wear the traditional clothes of his people, he is a pragmatic man who always ensures that his feet are adorned with the finest boots available no matter the origins or style.

Strengths: Although Altan enjoys presenting himself as a fierce warrior, by far his most important talents are his abilities in logistics management. Although he might not always have enough money to outfit the battalion with a full contingent of muskets, every man trusts Altan to be able to provide them with their monthly wage and can rest easy that they will go to bed with a loaf of bread in their stomach. Apart from this, Altan has a reputation for being able to spin up tall tales and strike up hard bargains, a holdover from his upbringing as a common merchant peddler in the Grand Zakhzeel of Altai. He is a natural leader of men, if not a natural military commander.

Weaknesses: Altan is a brave enough fellow, but he has never had to kill another, nor has he ever had to command a regiment in combat. His knowledge of military theory is based upon only the stories told by his grandfather of their days riding in the Golden Horde, and a Dallic Imperial military manual given to him upon his commision as a captain. Furthermore, his rough upbringing has now made him extremely prone to the vices of man, and he enjoys fine living perhaps a little too much. His attempts to try and hide his humble origins will often result in him telling outright lies and embellishments to make he and his men seem more reliable than they truly are.

Personality: Altan is a cunning individual who always seeks the best deal. Although he is gregarious with his affections and known to be a charismatic individual to those around him, he does not place his full trust on others easily. In his attempt to build his own personal brand, he has become used to posing as a tough warrior noble, equally cultured as he is fierce in warfare. Yet this swashbuckling and fierce image is only a cover his insecurities. He was once softspoken young man with no titles and no money to his name. In order to build a better life for his family, he left that person behind. From time to time, however, he shows his soft side, as evidenced by his reluctance to commit his men into unfavorable odds.

Biography: "I will admit, yes, ours is not a clan that fortune has favored over the years. If you go ask any of the old wise men at the Grand Bazaar however, then you will know the truth. The Jalair clan is the most venerable and honorable of the five great clans. We built Altai, and when the Dallics came, the Great City of Altai defeated every army! In fact, my great grandfather once rode upon the Realms of the Princes himself! When we joined the Empire, it was because the Jalair clan saw the noble truth of the Canon! Altai did not fall, we conceded to the union. We are of the finest warrior stock, our ancestors knew no equal with a horse and bow in his hand. I, Altan Jalair, am the scion of the Jalair Clan. Colonel, with my men and I here, rest assured that this province is in the firmest of hands."

The only truthful part about the introduction he gave to the colonel was that fact that his name was Jalair. Whether he was truly a descendant of the great Khans was another story entirely. By the modern period that Jalairs had long faded from prominence, and while to carry the name was certainly a curiosity, it was simply like giving shine to a ball of dirt that was Altan's life. While their ancestors had once been the terror of the steppe, they had long settled down into lives as farmers and traders. Somewhere along the way, the founding clans had realized that rather than raiding upon the great trade lanes that connected the Dallic Empire with the realms of the far horizon, it was simply more profitable to found a city that could service the trade route. Such was Altai, the Golden City, founded.

Altan was among the first generation of the Khumuus to be born after the Dallic Empire's victory over the Altai Khans. As a child he had only his mother, and he spent most days away from home repaying family debts working as a shopkeepers assistant in the Grand Zakheel, the greatest marketplace to be found along the Spice Road. As a boy, he took every opportunity to improve himself, learning to read from passing Dallic priests of the Canon, who was still in the laborious process of incorporating the Altai Pantheon to their creed. When he became 16, he had successfully saved enough money to open a small trading stall of his own, buying goods from one set of traders, and selling it at a higher price to another set. Although it wasn't easy, for someone like Altan it became second nature to embrace the Grand Zakheel as his only opportunity to create a new life.

By the time he was in his early twenties, he had reinvented himself as a respectable merchant with a flourishing business. Yet one thing continued to elude him. No matter how he tried, he could not break into the circles of the aristocracy no matter how well off he was. He knew that his clan name was a noble one, but they had long faded into the history books. The chance to truly establish the Jalairs as a great clan once again would have to come through accomplishing fine deeds. So it was that when his ears picked up on the call for captains to muster up troops in service to the Empire, he immediately sold his business holdings, and invested in hiring able-bodied men to form the Jalair Jezzails.

His first lieutenant Ogedei was an accountant, and his second lieutenant Timur was merely a nightwatchman. From a simple recruiting stall in the markets, Altan assembled a mishmash battalion of men from all walks of life. Rich, poor, they were all united by their desire to reinvent themselves in a society that had frozen their status. They armed themselves with everything from family heirloom muskets to handcrafted Jezzails and conducted drilling on the grounds of the old market square after dark. They were hardly combat-worthy but all the same, they set forth as real soldiers.

Ultimately it seemed as though the gods themselves were watching over them when Altan was able to convince a Dallic General to send his battalion to a remote Imperial Province to conduct garrison duty. They had talked it out over a fine meal in the old Palatial District. Altan strongly played up his men's "natural affinity with nature" and the second nature of their people to be "born in a horse's saddle" when in fact the realities of growing up poor meant most men had no such chance. It was enough to convince them that the Jalair Jezzails would make an excellent addition to counterinsurgency efforts.

Thus, the battalion set sail for Dangomor.

Marching song: The men of Altai do not have a marching tradition, and attempts to adapt it for more disciplined marching are still underway. Typically, the most talented throat singers amongst the battalion sing the traditional ode to their people's glory while a drummer beats to the rhythm.
Standard gear: Jezzail muskets, Mixed muskets crafted in the Altai Zakhzeel, composite bows, spears, and curved sabres. Roughly half the unit are armed with muskets of one type or another, while the other half are armed with spears, bows, and sabres. Most men carry short knives of one type or another. The men who wield the long and heavy jezzails often carry makeshift tripods on their backs.

Description: Named after the Jezzail, a traditional long barrelled heavy musket carried by many in the battalion, the unit is comprised of both urban residents of the great trading city of Altan as well as rural tribesmen from the surrounding steppe. The men were each individually recruited through the Altan Jalair's business networks, and more than a few are said to be those who seek to escape from debts. Nevertheless, morale is generally good within the battalion, and by drawing upon the long lost tales of their people's horseback warrior traditions, they are a relatively well motivated band. The presence of tribesmen from the countryside in the battalion greatly enhances the combat ability of the unit. These men are concentrated in third company, and possess both the skills and stamina to act as light infantry ahead of the other two companies. Meanwhile, the first and second company fights with pike and shot tactics, with spearmen and archers providing cover for the musketeers.

Journal Captain Altan Jalair, Jalair Jezzails

I set forth now into a new and unknown land, with three hundred of my compatriots at my back. All things considered, I think we will do well for ourselves. We a people of the horse with no horses, but with courage, we will find our destiny in this army. I write these memoirs down such that when we return to Altai, we may be judged by our ancestors, the high lords, and by our brothers. Gods willing, they will recognize our commitment, steel, and resolve. Gods willing, we can be the new generation of great men to come from Altai.

Standing alongside us in Dangomor are a number of captains of great deeds and accomplishments. I consider myself but a humble amateur in comparison, but not that I would ever let them know! Some men got to where they are by virtue of their experience with a sword, but who is to say that my luck with a coin is no less of an indicator that I am worthy to be a captain of men? I pray that they look upon me and see instead a shining example of Altai in its prime. Just we call our homeland Altai, the Golden City, I am Altan, a golden son of Clan Jalair. The boy who cowered under the whip of the shop master, the boy who made a living by dusting the grime off the feet of brigands, that boy should be forgotten.

To take stock of the men who will be my new comrades in arms:

Colonel Horatius Fellus: The colonel reminds me of the Dallic priests of the Canon who provided my schooling. A warm and happy fellow, so long as you aren't caught with a drink in your hands! I cannot fault him for the way he behaves. I can't say the colonel would very much approve of my love of luxury, but this is a man I can work with. That's one thing I appreciate about religious individuals. So long as I say my prayers and keep my men's antics to a respectable minimum, then our affairs will be in order. The colonel doesn't seem to be a fighting man, but with so many battalions being brought into the regiment, I would be more worried about competition to get our own fair share of fighting!

All the colonel has to do is make sure the pay and provisions flow to our men smoothly, and any action we're likely to see will take care of itself. After all, some of my steppe boys were rebels themselves not so long ago! As the colonel himself has said, Dangomor will be a good time to work on some hobbies.

Captain Virgil Jean Louis Philippe Montbeliard de Hohenfriedberg, 1st Death's Head Hussars: Honestly, this young man lives a life that I envy. Parties, women, and noble status. Should a life of debauchery ever tire him, what awaits is an equally cozy life as the master of a noble house. I don't know how I shall ever look him in the eye. I'm supposed to be the dashing horse lord! It's true that we both enjoy the finer things in life, but the difference between us is that he can actually afford it all! I'm not sure if I should admire him, or hate him for representing the aristocratic class that I'm striving to overtake back home. As long as he treats me with due respect, then we will be fine.

Captain Ebenezer Paschalis, West Pfeiffer Imperial Carbineers: This man seems like the real deal. His record says everything alone. I've seen men return from the harder stretches of the Spice Road stumble into my tavern back in Altai with a similar look. The difference is that those men usually find themselves revived after a cool drink and a few nights of rest. This man looks permanently damaged. If I'm clever about how I manage my battalion's terms of enlistment, then we will make it through without being put through the meat grinder as this man has. If he is any indication of what kind of man I will turn into if I stay in the service of the Empire for too long, then I'd best keep the wine close by.

Captain Hugh Lawson Clay, Wolves of Iron: He has the personality of a brick wall but much like the brick wall, I don't see anyone getting past him. He is the model example of the junior officer corps that has allowed the Dallic Empire to conquer so many. Normally I'd have no complaints about being stationed with a man of duty, but seeing as I shall have to rely on the company of my fellow officers for gods know how long, I cannot help but feel my heart sink a little. Time will tell, but I have a sneaking suspicion winning his respect will have to take more than a few well-placed compliments and some bonding over a good bottle of beer. If I chance across a fine horse, I will take note to use it as a gift for Captain Clay. Men who have few words for other men often find it easier to communicate with animals.

Captain Cibor Marczynski, Cybulskan Volunteers "The Blackfeet" : About as pleasant as a pouch of ten-year-old fermented horse milk, but with just about as much bite. I can sympathize with where this man has come from. Like him, I didn't have much growing up, and like him, we fight not out of love for the Dallics, but because it presents the only way forward out of the lives that we led. His men fight in a similar fashion as well. The Cybulskan Long Rifle holds some similarities to the long-barred Jezzail, and our battalions share a common lack of respect for ordered Dallic drill. Still, whereas we hold proud civilizational aspirations, the Cybulskans really just want to be left alone in peace. Not that this was altogether a bad thing. A man with no higher ambitions beyond his rank will make for a dependable companion.

Captain Alastair Strachan, Crask Highlanders: I am no stranger to men wearing tunics, but I must admit I am rather unaccustomed to seeing men who wear tunics that end so short! If the Crask Highlanders were a company of women, then they would make for a much more pleasant sight for the eyes! Slinging insults aside, I do pity them. If ever I had any intention of rebelling against the Dallic Empire, then seeing the Highlanders stomp across the world fighting someone else's war has quickly put an end to that thought. I respect their dedication to their homeland and their bravery, but as they say in Altai, sometimes the deadliest arrow is the one fired while in retreat. I should only hope that in their quest to return home, Captain Strachan does not inadvertently sabotage our own quest to return home one day.

Captain Valentin Rosicrucio de Dangomor, Valentin's Volunteers "Native Scouts Battalion": When I first heard of this man's story, I confess that I wanted to smack him over the head. Foolish boy! If only you knew what others would do to be born into a position like yours. Still, as I begin to calm down I must respect the fact that he would rather work to build a life for himself with his own two hands than to simply accept the inheritance of his forefathers. I only pray that he does not regret that decision if he must explain to his sons why they were denied the inheritance that would also have been rightfully theirs. I can't complain about his troops, however. Gods willing, what better way to put down a rebellion than to make the rebels fight their own people? Saves us the trouble of risking our own skins.

Captain James Augustus Rupert Carlington, Carlington County's Imperial Cuirassiers: In a different circumstance, Captain Carlington would make for a good drinking partner. In their current circumstance, however, I can't see anything but trouble coming from this cavalry captain. What I would do if I had horses like theirs! Give me a horse as fine as those cuirassiers, and I could take the Imperial capital by myself! I confess I'm no stranger to drink and certainly enjoy a good party. Yet to manage a battalion of cavalry is one of the most difficult responsibilities out there. Not only must you respect your men, but you must also take care of the horses - whose lives are probably more valuable than the men!

Captain Kasch "Leśnik" Fletcher, 44th Fletcher's Farmers: A tough and battle-tested battalion. Given the state of many other units, and their leadership, it makes me feel more reassured that we have men like Fletcher and Clay who will be used to carrying out the gruntwork. It is all well and good to have well trained and well bred nobles lead the forefront, but even the most precious arrowhead needs a dependable shaft to shoot true.

Captain Samadou Diop, Chandakot Janissaries, the "Spinning Jennies": I've never quite seen a woman like Captain Diop, but I know better than to say anything out loud. I was raised only by my mother, and on her day she could unhorse any man with a shot from her bow and arrow. It is, and always has been a man's world, and for Chandakot to have continued to persevere with their social system, then they must know how to fight, and fight well. Altai was once in a similar position to Chandakot, but whereas Altai was ultimately defeated on the battlefield, Chandakot achieved a negotiated peace. If only we had been as clever! I look forward to finding out what sort of trade goods they produce in Chandakot. It is no secret I plan to return home one day to seize upon higher ambitions. Building up a larger business network now could yield massive dividends later.

Captain Klaus Adler, Erika's Jagers: Another stand up fellow with a hardened and experienced fighting battalion. Like many other light infantry units in the regiment, they are not blessed with excellent discipline. Against the hill peoples, however, I might dare wager that we have enough guns, and enough steel to make it irrelevant. Most of the other captains are probably expecting the Jalair Jezzails to match the Dangomori in fierocity, but in truth, my own eyes are pointed towards seeing how effective Dallic light infantry will be on the field of battle.

I had contemplated that many of the officers would have advance knowledge of one another, at least by word of mouth or mutual acquaintance. Here is my proposed compilation of how Eb might initially feel about his fellow captains.

  • Montbeliard de Hohenfriedberg - "From my channels within the Cavalry community, I heard that he is quite the swashbuckler. The quintessential Hussar, as Captain Montford told me. His father served alongside my own, and he had plenty of platitudes for the family. However, I have heard rumors that he is a notorious philanderer, and I hold reservations for if he ever courts dear Sussana."
  • Jalair of Altai - "A foreign horselord, if I have ever seen one. Altai is the home of snakes, and the steppes are rife with bandits. I have asked for second opinions of this man, and they tell me of a swashbuckling scion of horse nomad blood, with the silver tongue of a bazaar merchant. Perhaps he could assist me with the acquisition of cannabis and opium plantations in his land. In time, I expect to have a better definition of this man."
  • Fletcher - "I cannot say that I am wholly familiar with him, even by reputation. A foreigner, I know, with a battalion of foreign levies. His martial ability has been well-brokered to me by other officers, but as to his largesse and personality, he is enigmatic. We shall see if this foreigner has suitable mettle, for everything is in the eye of the beholder."
  • Marczynski - "I have encountered this man before, although some of my contemporaries have disputed that he is even human at all. The man has little social fortitude; that is to say that he is almost wholly incorruptible towards the shortcomings of us nobles. Although a commoner, he is among competent peers in my eyes. His resolve is admirable, and in my mind off-sets his brusque attitude."
  • Strachen of Crask - "Highlanders are brash folk, with an inborn pivot to conflict that is unique to them. He is from revel stock, though currently - for the time being - in fair graces with Dallia. I presume that a large investment has been placed upon him to redeem his clan in later years."
  • Rosicrucio de Dangomor - "A far-thinker, with his head high in the clouds. In my eyes, his intelligence has made him predisposed to awkwardness. I cannot dispute many of his professional assertations of our collective military history, but I also do my best to shy away from scandal, of which a thick cloud hangs over this man."
  • Carlington of Carlington - "Cuirassers are simply Hussars with an archaic flair. The Carlingtons are held in high esteem, and Count Carlington and my own father are in correspondence often. My friends tell me that Captain Carlington is quite the social butterfly, and a natural in the saddle. I love it. Of course the regiment is going to be gossiping about a battalion of highlanders that are about to join them.

I approve of this wholeheartedly and would like to produce something of a similar fashion! My character may know much less about the others than Eb for a number of reasons though...

This is amazing. Beautiful. And, anyway, can I submit a delayed app? I want to wait until the WCoH is over, so I can post in this frequently.

Welcome, captain Paschalis. Having some experience with the regiment will be good, and mounted infantry will help keep order.

The Knights of Azorea wrote:Heavily W.I.P at the moment, I'm aiming for a devoted acolyte of a specific cult within the Canon, to the point of perhaps a dangerous level of monotheism.

Captain Fletcher! Good to have you among the men. I am curious to hear all the stories you have to tell.

The Imperial Warglorian Empire wrote:Can we have a sort of system where each level for each trait of the battalion has an example? Like:
Level 1 Marching Speed=Going at a Turtle's Pace
or
Level 2 Accuracy=Stormtrooper

Or something

I will try to get something in like that, yes!

The Imperial Warglorian Empire wrote:I'd like to ask, what is the general geography of the region? Is it like Colonial America? (with large settlements but outside that large woods and mountainous terrains?) Or something more like the Netherlands (flatlands with some hills)

It's mostly fields at the coast, dotted with a few villages. Those fields begin to slope pretty quickly going inland, turning to hills, and then quickly to mountains as you go on. The more you get inland, the thicker the forest gets.

Captain Jalair, welcome to the 22nd. I would watch those shiny guns your men carry, those would make a pretty penny in any marketplace.

Cylarn wrote:I had contemplated that many of the officers would have advance knowledge of one another, at least by word of mouth or mutual acquaintance.

Sussana has told me that the good Captain has 'courted' several of her friends, and I use the term 'courted' in a very dubious light."
  • Fellus of Hevan - "I am quite honored to have a noted theologian in my presence, despite the many tales I have heard of his lack of martial ability. Ursula and I attended one of his sermons with a friend who is quite the admirer of the good Colonel. I shook his hand and traded a few words and well-wished prayers. For the sake of the Canon, I wish for the Colonel to have a prosperous command."
  • Clay of Warudo - "I am surprised that a man of coastal stock would seek out service on land, as opposed to the command of his own ship. The 'Iron Wolf' has a number of supporting accounts that attest to his battlefield prowess. I do admire that, but I heard minor talk of his disciplinary nature, which is said to be of much excess by some."

I would suggest that every captain tries to make something like this, because it would really help with letting the RP hit the ground running. Looks good, Cy! Thanks for that.

The Empire can always send reinforcements, so there is always room to join.

Speaking about that, I am thinking about starting the RP tomorrow. I am interested to see what will happen!

I'll make a list such as Cylarn has done but could you update the accepted roster so I don't miss anyone?
