If the French play as well as they did today, France probably wins the World Cup.

Next time i'll cheer for Holland (whenever they're not playing Belgium..)

France did what they had to do, excellent defensive play. They kept De Bruyne and Lukaku out of the game. Belgium missed Meunier on the right (and Chadli on the left...) Moussa Dembélé played a terrible game.

Anyway, France didn't sparkle with adventurous football, but it was still an interesting game to watch. You could clearly see how changing tactics had an impact on the game.

Football comes down to playing good and having luck. France had both today. Belgium had both in the BRA-BEL game.
Can't see Croatia or England stopping this France from winning this cup. England should play their B-team tomorrow so we can finally get that ENG-BEL rematch and England can dream forever about what might have happened if they went for the win in CRO-ENG.

I'll be cheering for Belgium your next match, don't worry :)

France played really well.

Could've done without Mbappé's antics towards the end but whatever.

If it comes to a France-England final, I seriously hope the French don blue and the English red colors.

Barring an odd turn of events I guess that locks in Sir Harry of Kane as Golden Boot though not sure he can be overly proud of his goals per se.

This has been one of the most 'stroll-to-the-finals' for France, other than a lapse against Argentina I don't know how much trouble they've been in - in fact the cup has been less about fantastic wins and more shocking losses throughout.

Unless Kane doesn't score again, and Lukaku scores a hat-trick :P

Oh yeah, I forget Belgium aren't out exactly, just up for 3rd or 4th place.. still, odds are against either of those things happening.

Another notable aspect - given England do make it to the final's then it will be a really young final - England and France are joint second youngest in average age - https://www.statista.com/statistics/865 ... layer-age/

Pretty unlikely given France's defensive approach under Deschamps - I would love both coaches to go 'you know what, it's the finals, let's just go for it..', and have a 4-3 game with a last minute winner in normal time akin to Zidane's UEFA CL goal in '02.. but by Lingard or Alli.

Or maybe a French player will lose his cool, and we'll get to see another WC Finals headbutt.

I just can't decide which of the remaining three contestants I want the least to win it...

Maybe starting WW3 before the tournament's over is worth it.

Given they're about the 2 youngest teams except Nigeria one might expect this rivalry might last a couple of tournaments.. in which case I'm fine because although the French ultimately had victory this will be the The Battle of Crécy where English longballmen defeat the heavy cavalry of France by cutting off flanking options to force a concentrated attack.

Once more unto the breach..

If I was entirely neutral..

England
Pro - young team, seem genuinely nice, should be better than they are
Con - another 50 years of crowing about a tournament long ago.. don't know if I could stand it

Croatia
Pro - a nation of 4 million in the semi-finals again.. great midfield.. the minnows punching above their weight
Con - half of them are under investigation and the whole team reeks of corruption and political manoeuvring

France
Pro - a team from everywhere, Griezman has a German father and Portugese mother alone, the whole team is a make up of integration
Con - it's France - and Deschamps has taken a bunch of talent and made them boring

So.. tough..

Meanwhile, I'm stuck on a train at London Euston that takes an hour and ten minutes to get home.

No driver has turned up, and we're running at least 13 minutes late.

The train usually pulls in at 7:06; so I was resigned to missing the first 15 minutes or so

But now that's at least half of the first half missed, even if we leave at the revised departure time.

Grrrrrrrrr.

This, and crown Queen Elizabeth as Queen of France, and Germany while you're at it since the House of Windsor is apparently Germanic in origin?
