The Story

It is the 32nd century…

Humans, from the planet known as Earth successfully breached the barrier of space travel at the turn of the 23rd century and colonised their home solar system. The decades that followed saw mankind’s Golden Age where science and technology progressed to levels before deemed impossible.

However, the age of peace and prosperity would not last long. By the dawn of the 24th century, human colonies near the sun Sirius first encountered extraterrestrial lifeforms. Inevitably, conflict with the xenos began, and as human spacers explored more of the Milky Way, they encountered other alien civilisations. In the grim darkness that followed, three centuries of warfare ensued.

Over time, the cost of sustaining these war became too great, and the various alien races and humanity agreed to a peace. In time, this peace brought greater trade relations and soon the various civilisations and races came together and formed the Republic Galactica, therefore uniting much of the Milky Way. It seemed like a new Golden Age had dawned…

And for many, it was. The Republic stamped out conflict and brought commerce to much of the galaxy. Great shipping lanes, protected by the Republic’s navy, transported goods to distant island planets across the great sea of stars. Interstellar ravel, once thought of as amluxury, became the normal for most people.

However, this progress came at a great cost. At first the Republic served only as a mediator and arbiter to ensure peace, but slowly its power became greater and greater. The Earth, like many planets, lost all semblance of autonomy. Most saw this as a necessary price. The painful wars were history, but the fear of conflict remained.

Not all accepted this price on freedom, though. Space pirates, always a threat especially on the frontier systems, championed a more libertine way of life and challenged the Republic. Other, less interested in morality, used piracy as a way to gain wealth and fame. By the 32nd century, the issue of piracy became the dominant point of debate in the Republic Galactica after a major raid on the main trade lanes. The leaders of the Republic instructed the navy to stamp out piracy once and for all…



In this RP, you take the role of a Space Pirate in the service of the self-professed champion of liberty, Captain Arminius von Sigurd, a former officer in the Republic navy who resented the loss of Earth’s autonomy and the growing power of the Republic. Aside from the Republic, Captain Sigurd also battles against other pirates for his dream of a freer galaxy.

As a work of science fiction, main inspiration comes from the stories of Isaac Asimov and Frank Herbert, the original Star Wars trilogy, Cowboy Bebop and Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and Disney’s Treasure Planet. The aesthetics and technology are therefore a pastiche of these major inspirations and thus gives a large amount of freedom to the galaxy as a whole and to character creation. Your character’s role, history, and essentially everything are left open so long as he/she/it is a member of Sigurd’s crew.

Bio: The exact origins of Captain Sigurd are shrouded in mystery, and no definitive version likely exists. This is just one of the more popular theories surrounding the enigmatic pirate. It is said that he was born on the Earth, or perhaps in one of the colonies not far from humanity’s birthplace. Sigurd came from an impoverished area, some claim, and seeking adventure and riches he joined the Republic navy. He distinguished himself and became the commander of his own ship, the legends say, after he rescued an admiral from a pirate attack. However, as the Republic’s power grew and the individual planets lost their autonomy he left the navy.

At some point the name “Arminius von Sigurd” appears in the records when he raided a Republic shipyard and stole an advanced experimental ship that he modified, later known as the Fafnir.

The young pirate began his career with a bang, and soon became widely known for his daring exploits and love of freedom. He dedicated himself to the end of the Republic Galactica and fights for this cause. However, he also does battle with other pirates and is known throughout the galaxy as a proctor of the weak and defenseless.

Skills:
Tactical genius— Either by his own innate skills or perhaps learned over time, many, especially those in the Republic navy, fear Sigurd’s ability to outsmart and defeat them.

Piloting— Both large and small ships, Sigurd can pilote just about anything.

Duelist— Sigurd is a renowned duelist with both pistol and laser swords.

Gambling— Sigurd loves to gamble and is quite skilled.
Personality: Sigurd’s personality is one of dichotomy. To his allies, he is kind and compassionate and often jovial. However, he is ruthless to his enemies and will only show mercy to the few opponents who can gain his respect. Above all else, he is a figure obsessed with honour, both personal and that of his crew whom he treats like family.

Name: Aelia Lupuer

Species: Hyperian, an offshoot of human kind, they are the genetically modified elite upper class of the Hyperian Empire, a collection of deep space systems on the edge of the galaxy colonized by authoritarian hardliners that were exiled at the foundation of the Republic Galactica. In order to remain in control over their hordes of Xeno slaves, the Hyperians genetically modified themselves to the point of a new species being created, Homo Exilus, as a reminder of how they were cast out by their own species. As a result, Hyperians have many edges over a baseline human, being faster, more durable, and much longer lived. Their strength and intelligence however vary as much as it does in normal humans however. Though indertiminable from a human from the outside, Hyperians can be identified by slightly glowing blood, serrated incisors, and a second set of lungs to enable better oxygen flow and endurance throughout the body.

Bio: Aelia was born to a moderately wealthy family on Hyperion during the Imperial Succesion, an event that many considered a curse, for the child had been born without an Emperor. The outcast status she suffered from this only grew as she showed more tomboyish tendencies in a thorughly traditionalist empire. Angered by her status as a freak, Aelia struck out, starting many fights in the schools, until she was removed for a strict set of tutors at home. This was only officially though. In reality, she was taken to be trained as a Naval Officer by her uncle, the up and coming Rear Admiral Pallas Lupeur. Under his watchful gaze, he tried to forge his rebellious niece into a weapon. He only however made her anger towards the empire a roaring inferno. When she was finally given a command as a lieutenant in her uncle's fleet, she struck out at him, using her small craft to inflict critical damage upon an Imperial capital ship before warping into Republican space.

The years that followed saw Aelia become one of the most feared pirates on the outer reaches of the Republic, known to many in the area as the Ghost of Hyperion. Using rapid fire imperial shock tactics, she caught the Republic Navy on it's back, while also moving frequently enough to avoid making regular enemies of any one particular officer. However, around 10 years ago, the first Imperial raids into Republic territory in generations forced her to seek safer hunting grounds, with not one but two interstellar powers in the region. This proved to be her undoing as a pirate captain, when she faced far stronger republic resistance than she had been expecting and was forced to abandon her ship and crew in exchange for her own life. Taken prisoner by the republic, she used their infamiliarity with Hyperians to escape before she could be processed and ran, wandering the galaxy for around 5 years before she found work aboard the Fafnir as a gunner and combatant. Using her military training, she quickly rose to become Sigurd's Master Gunner, using the name Sara Lianna, though she is more feared than respected by the crew and is seen as an oddity by the very select few who know her true identity.

Skills:
Master Combatant- Though she isn't a sterioded brute, or a tactical genius, Aelia is perhaps one of the greater martial artists and fighters in Republic Space, being trained in dozens of combat styles and weapons in her many decades both as an Imperial Cadet and a Pirate. Keeping her true race a secret enables her to gain suprise over enemies who think her human, and she has spent years refining her talent.

Multi-lingual- A somewhat useful skill when it comes to negotiations, Aelia is fluent in most of the important trade and political languages in the Milky Way, as well as a few lesser known ones from the outer rim where she worked as a pirate.

Hyperian Physiology- Due to the genetic modifications to the Hyperians as a species, Aelia is much more durable and faster than the average human. This comes with the added bonus of being able to drink most under the table.

Personality: Aelia is an incredibly irratable and all around unpleasent person. She, like most Hyperians, has a large superiority complex, as well as a general distaste for non-humanoids. She mimics the freedom loving desires of her fellow pirates on the outside, playing up her crazy and postive Sara persona to hide to coniving, hate filled, and authoritarian true personality that longs to gather a pirate fleet and long lost weapons of war, and seize her empire for herself.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
Strengths- Great physical shape

Seems to radiate fear onto her enemies

Weaknesses- Total psychopath

Incapable of forming proper relationships

Character concept: A Republic-built robot that was stolen by Arminius during the same incident where he stole the Fafnir. Arminius managed to reprogram it, its primary object was changed from "serve the Republic Galactica." to "serve Arminius von Sigurd. (and the rest of the crew of the Fafnir)" It now serves as "First Mate", generally acting as an advisor to Arminius and a secondary authority onboard the ship.

Between the possibility that it is only faking its shift in loyalties, and its tendency to act incredibly sociopathic in its pursuit of the crew's prosperity, I'd imagine the crew only barely trusts the robot. (An interesting dynamic would be for Arminius to be far more trusting of the robot then the rest of the crew is, viewing it as a friend that he liberated from Republic slavery.)

I'm thinking I might go with the team pet, maybe a Rocket Raccoon sort of deal, but I dunno.I've used up too many "I'm not a furry" cards lately

I'm a little disappointed you won't be going with a Bojack-expy, but yeah, a weird alien animal as the team mascot works.

At 1.6 m, Maira is short even by Giokeni standards. Thin, with a small chest but wide hips not uncommon to those of the Most Noble and Ancient Clan of u'Oriunn. Her hair is messy, as is typical of Giokeni, and her skin has tanned to a bright Crayola shade of cerulean. Prefers leather clothing, most notably her human-made sheepskin jacket. Is actually capable of being clean, but is usually not.

Role: Chief Engineer and fourth-in-command (at her insistence) behind the captain, first mate, and chief medical officer.
Skills: By Giokeni standards, Maira is a pretty good mechanic, by human (and overall galactic) standards she's a genuine genius in the engineering department, with the unusual gift (among Giokeni) of actually being able to articulate what's supposed to be done to non-Giokeni subordinates (as many Giokeni in the engineering field use colorful terminology comparable to Russian mat, where nearly everything can be described with a variant of a word that otherwise describes genitalia, and is nearly indecipherable unless you've been raised and educated with it). She is also a good pilot, if rather reckless in combat and prone to showing off. She excels in making bombs and improvised weapons, too - a skill many lowhive Giokeni have. Plays the pipes very well.
Personality: Maira is the type who was built from the ground up to do something with machinery. Innately curious about the inner workings of mechanical parts, she is almost never without a tool of some sort (most notably the spanner she keeps on her person at all times), she has both the education and the experience with virtually every major class of ship in the Republic and the Giokeni Confederation to deal with virtually anything any spaceship can throw at her, including her own craft.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Maira is a great pilot and mechanic, and can drink most humanoids under the table, not to mention play the pipes and sing. Good shot with a pistol and battle rifle as well. She is, however, reckless, short, and tends to show off, and while she's good at making bombs, she doesn't quite have the aim for throwing them in battle. She also gets mad easily in mano-a-mano combat, which can make her make mistakes.
Likes: Meat, whiskey, flying, the wind in her hair, oil between her fingers, a good puzzle, family, her clan, loud music
Dislikes: Deliberately impossible challenges, Clan d'Rengo, silence, overly jingoistic war cinema.
Misc. info: The orange fighter in the Fafnir's hangar is technically hers, which would make her flight lead, but then Sigurd also owns one of the fighters and both he and she are on board the Fafnir as often as not when it comes to fighter battles.
