High Hopes for Midrasia at Copa

Manager Clar said his team is 'raring and ready to go' ahead of their opening match against Transcandar

There are high hopes for a good performance from the Midrasian national team ahead of their opening match against Transcandar later today, with many hoping that the team will finally be able to put to bed the third place curse that has plagued the team for the past two years.

This years' tournament taking place in Salborga sees Midrasia placed in Group C alongside the likes of Transcandar, Indragiri and Naharin. Whilst many have described these opponents as sure walk-over victories, both the players and manager have stated that they must not underestimate their opponents if they wish to go far. Speaking earlier today, manager Pere Clar stated: 'For sure we are favourites, we have one of the best teams with the best talent, but the others in the group will be playing their hearts out and we must not give them room to disrupt our flow.' Many fans of the national team still remember back to Midrasia's shock 4-0 loss to Navack on their first game of the 2017 Copa, a day many, least of all Thierry Florient, will be hoping to avoid repeating. 'Navack was a shock last year, and it has certainly led us to put our guard up from now on. We have to keep our heads in the game now, no matter the opponent'.

Ahead of tonight's match, manager Clar is expected to field a strong team, utilising a high-pressing 4-1-4-1 formation which regularly sees wingers Qualquart and Joulles pressing up into positions more akin to strikers than midfielders, whilst Lazare would play a false 9. However, the manager is yet to announce the team for the first game, stating that we will all have to 'wait and see' before kickoff. Captain Robert Hadrien who takes over from the retiring Henri Sabon has stated that the team will 'not hold back' in the group stages and that 'every game is a must win, no matter the opponent, for sure we will field a strong team'.

Yet whilst the players await kickoff later today, thousands of Midrasian fans expected to be at the tournament to cheer on the reds have been left at home, having to watch the match on TV. Transportations issues and a lack of tickets and hotel vacancies has left many budding fans down and out at home. The small size of the Principality, at only 304,000 people, and 1,564 km² means there have been considerable issues for fans looking to travel with the team for the tournament. Huge issues with flights for the tournament have left many planes grounded due to overcrowding at Arsvad Airport, whilst many more have been diverted as far as Nebligen and Hudenholm. Additionally, all hotels within the Principality have been fully booked, with many fans forced to bus to and from Berke every day just to get to and from their bedroom. 'It's disgraceful one fan said. You have tens of millions of fans coming in to watch this tournament live. Salborga can't take it, there just isn't enough room. They're nowhere near large enough to host a tournament of this calibre. I booked my tickets in advance, but now I have to pay upwards of 100 Ducats to get a 2 hour bus to and from my hotel. It's not on.' The small size of tournament venues has also ensured that the usually huge number of Midrasian fans which travel to the tournament each year has been cut significantly. Another fan stated: 'tournaments like this require space to house millions, it is a global tournament with global reach. Having it on a peninsula the size of Portas' back garden was a stupid move. What's worse is that many of those travelling are coming without tickets to watch the matches at Salborgan bars, but that just causes more disruption. Everywhere you go there are huge crowds, you can't move. It's a disaster waiting to happen.'

Despite these woes, Salborgan authorities have assured the FFA that they are capable of hosting the tournament, and will be cooperating with Navish authorities on security arrangements, and to provide alternative arrangements for fans without hotels in the Principality. A number of airlines including Moineau and Lhedvinsk have stated that they will be updating travellers at the earliest possible moment about new arrangements for flights, which are likely to utilise airports in other parts of Lhedwin.

COPA BEGINS

Today, the new world football championship begins. This year will be held in a friendly European state of Salborga. Each team will play three matches with other teams in their group and the two best placed teams will be placed in Round of 16.

Kagon will play in Group F together with Dreyvisevich, Mardin Isles and especially tough opponent - Navack. The first match will be played with Dreyvisevich today at 8 pm at Pensfield City Stadium in the Pensfield city. This stadium is not particularly large. It can accommodate 20,200 spectators, making it the stadium with the lowest capacity. However, that doesn't mean thet it won't be exciting. Thousands of our fans have already gone there to support our boys. We talked to some of them.

"This is legendary! We will show everyone that Kagon is the best!"
"What are Dreyshavic? Who are they at all? We'll win them easily!"
"Time for a Spectacle"
"I just expect a fair play and an exciting game."
"Our guys have been training hard and I know they can do it."

Particularly interesting match will be played in Mansley between the last year's champion New Timeria and Hipasia. You should definitely watch that one too.

Our talk with the centre forward and the Copa d’Aeia

Centre forward Nikódem Nesz is off to Salborga to compete in the Copa d’Aeia as the
first Ostrin playing for the Purples.

EA: Thank you for talking with us, Nikódem! I’m sure it’s been a busy time.
NN: It has, but thank you for the interview. [laughs] I enjoy talking.
EA: You’re the first Ostrin to play for the Purples. How does that feel?
NN: Pretty neat. Growing up on the island, it’s very easy to assume that you won’t go anywhere, that you’re stuck. And if you do go, there’s that fear you’ll lose that connection to Ostry in some way. When I left in 2013 to play for New Hope FC, I was really conscious of that fear, and I tried to alleviate it. I remember trying to make zupa dôrszô for my teammates without cod and, God, it was horrible. [laughs] Never again doing that!
EA: And coming back to Navack?
NN: It was great! Since I was a kid I always rooted for them, and to finally play for the Purples is really a dream come true. They’re not only a great team, but extremely welcoming too. My first day training with them, Karsten Johansen came up to me and tried his best to speak Ostric. It was botched beyond belief and he stopped almost immediately, but it’s the thought that counts, you know?
EA: I always thought Johansen was the “friendly one” on the team. So, going to the Copa d’Aeia, are you excited?
NN: Of course I’m excited! I really feel Navack has the ability to snag the Copa this year. We made it to the quarterfinals and ranked fifth, so we’re in a position to do much better and win the final. I’m excited for the group stage the most honestly, that’s where we’ll show our teeth. The Mardin Isles field a decent team, but I believe we’re more disciplined and have an edge. Kagon and Dreyvisevich are notable teams in their own right as well, but I do honestly think we’ll come out on top. It won’t be an easy fight in the group stage, but if anything it’ll harden us.

Everything on the Aleian side is ready for the first match of Copa d'Aeia 2018 in Salborga, and the Aleian team has arrived in Asvard all fit for their first match against Crylante. Let's Meet the Aleian football XI!

The team as a whole is known to take a defensive stance during matches, only moving forwards when they see an indisputable opportunity. The strategy often frustrates the other teams, and several matches of the Aleians have ended with a penalty shootout. Still, the strategy proved to be effective in 2007, when Aleia came out as the champions of the entire tournament. Now, there is a question: Who are the people of our team?

Igor Glokker, #1
26 years old, born and raised in Severno, has been a faithful part of Aleian first division Inostranyy FC for almost his entire career. While he was a midfielder at the start of his career, he has announced that he "has found his love defending and preserving the integrity of the ball". Among the three goalkeepers of the Aleian team, he is the only player to have scored a goal on an international level. He has contributed to the Aleian effort for the past three Copas, and is expected to be the goalkeeper for Aleia in 2018.

Daniil Tyvertsky, #14
Tyvertsky, nicknamed "Tyvt" by his fellow players, forms part of the defense as CB in the Aleian formation. 23 years old. From Yasnaya. Relatively new addition to the team. First Copa.

Kliment Karsten Merettskol, #12
Having grown up in Yela village in the far outskirts of Valia province, it was unexpected that K.K. Merettskol, age 22, would develop and be able to follow an interest in football. Yet, quickly came out of his isolated childhood, and is now a part of the top 11 Aleian sportsmen. Currently, he is on the search for a new club to play for, having played for both Sigridsberg and Somersylen. He is known as the most charitable player in the team, frequently visiting his hometown with a football and free shirts. Merettskol will form the rear defense as CB in this Copa, which will be his second.

Yuri Henrik Lokker, #9
Y.H. Lokker, 29, Elenaborg, handsome, apparently skilled. As the Copa will be his first major game, people are unsure what to think about him, but no one can doubt his handsome looks. Will defend the left flank.

Fyodor Hans Vaher, #13
This will be the fifth world cup for Fyodor Hans Vaher (27), a native of Oralienborg. In the Aleian leagues, he has played for Meredettov for seven years, which is a rather obscure team for someone in his position, though he has claimed that the would never betray his fellow players. Eventually, the Aleian national team manager discovered him, and offered him a place in the country's team. Vaher has received the duty of defending the right flank for the first match of his fourth tournament.

Stepan Jon Gederer, #19
Gederer could be considered a brute by other players. 28 and large in size, he has been known to outright stop an opponent simply by standing in front of him. There is no doubt he has contributed to Aleia's reputation as stalwart defenders. Despite his skills being located somewhere else than attack, he will have both offensive and defensive roles as CDM this time. Previously, he has been right wing defender.

Yevgeny Hans Redel, #23
CDM, 22, first Copa, thin, good runner, nothing much else to say. Unusually silent figure outside of matches. Second Copa.

Kirill Emil Yaglin, #20
The oldest player in the eleven Aleians (but not in the team!), age 29, Yaglin became famous worldwide when he scored the winning goal against Navack in the Copa grand final of 2007. Since then, he has become rather obscure, and has only returned for the last two Copas. He is a master at hitting the ball with his head, having once held the world record in continuous heads. With such a strong skull, it is clear that Yaglin is formidable despite his age. K.E. Yaglin will be at the near-front (CAM) for the starting games, right behind the Forwards.

Ullrik Uler, #7
So far, Uler's career has been an unlucky one. Despite being only 24, he has achieved getting more yellow and red cards than the rest of the team. So far, he is yet to score a single goal against an opposing team (though one can blame his position in the field for that). He has become infamous for his annoyed tone when dealing with Alemannics and Vestrics, once even headbutting a referee. Of course, one still expects him to keep his calm when Aleia faces Crylante tonight. CAM.

Enje Elovan, #10
And then we have Enje Elovan, our team captain from Oralienborg! At 27 years old, he is the player in the entire team with the most international goals, and as a former player within the Aeian elite series he is likely the most recognizable face for non-Aleians. Having played almost since he was born, he has been trained by some of the world's most famous players, and now there are few players in Aleia who have ever come up to his level. While the captain of the Aleian national team, he is also the captain of the first division Tarken FC, which just recently won the Aleian elite series. With that in mind, every Aleian has high expectations for Elovan. For the Copa, Elovan will be on the attack as Forward.

Mart, #11
Although Mart is the newest addition (and at 22 years old, almost the youngest) to the team, he has proven his friends that he is a formidable player on the field, and has earned himself a spot in the front. Despite the defensive nature of the team, Mart is noted for taking an aggressive stance towards a match (well, the trademark of a man from Nevelagen). While this has occasionally backfired straight in the face of his team (every Aleian remembers 4-5 Toverlov, just aska fan, they'll know), it has also brought decisive victories for the teams he has played for. He has received the position of Forward, alongside Elovan.

And naturally, the team of Invelden wishes Aleia good luck against Crylante in the match tonight!
