Postby Fregantes Empire » Sat May 26, 2018 12:58 pm

Democritus Miscellaneous Works

Welcome to the Miscellaneous Works! This is a forum dedicated to the further advancement of the established universe of Democritus. In this forum you can write stories, articles, critiques and many more things that will contribute to the in-depth development of the regional RP and the regional lore. Now, let’s get to the Q&A explanation for further details;

I didn’t quite understand the general concept, can you give an example?

Say, let’s imagine that there is a fashion festival in Paris/New Metropolitan France (and you probably learnt it from the DT). You can write a newspaper/internet blog critique of the festival, or write a story about a model or a designer participating in the said festival.

Another one, say, you can write the story/dairy of a Japanese student who just graduated from the highschool and got accepted into a university in Berlin. You can talk about the impressions of a foreign student, on the architecture, the people, the education system, and much more!

And another one, say, the Italians found a new cure for lung cancer. You can write the scientific article of said cure, detailing the procedure, its application, the substances which take place, etc.

To put it simply, since we have a big universe and a solid alternate history backing it, the possibilities are limitless!

Hmm, are there any rules which I have to follow?

Although limiting one’s creativity sounds undesirable, it is a bit necessary for this case. Here are the list of rules (they can change over the course of time):

1)Don’t use this forum to insult or undermine the reputation and/or plans of other RPers. We wouldn’t want that, do we?

2)Show respect for the Democritus Canon. Don’t write something based on a thing which isn’t canon. The Democritus Times is a good source for knowing what’s canon or not, and you can always ask in the RMB. See, you can’t write about a fashion festival in Paris, if there aren’t any fashion festivals in Paris. But of course, you can write about past events, be it last year or the 70s, but still, show respect to the canon. (This rule may be subjected to change through further discussion)

3)Don’t try to misrepresent a place or an event. Sure, you can add your touch, but don’t overdo it to the extent of picturing the FSR as a bunch of squabbling workers or Europe as the land of the liberal demons.

4)Consult with other RPers. This isn’t a binding rule, but it is heavily encouraged. Through this, one can follow the second and third rules. Say, you are going to write something about Tehran. You would need to consult the Persian RPer in order to create a quality work.

5)Put effort in your work. This is to be a serious project, and single liners won’t be tolerated. If you think that it is too much, or you don’t have the willingness to do it, then why are you trying to write? Don’t torture yourself. For those who are willing to write, please write one or two paragraphs at minimum.

Is there a format which I have to use?

Yes, sorta. The DT time passes faster than the RL time, therefore, keeping the chronological order of events and happenings is of importance. Therefore, in order to avoid confusion, please use the format presented below at the beginning of each post;

Invovled Countries Through Location:
RL Date:
Democritus Date:

So, with everything said, let’s get to work! For writers, sincere hopes of joy, and for readers, sincere hopes of appreciation and satisfaction!

The city was all the way as it was. The streets were filled with vendors doing about their business, children playing with tires and tin cans, and some men busy enjoying a noon conversation with bottles of soda and roasted chicken near the sidewalk store. This was your typical street in Dili, the capital of East Timor, now a part of Australia.

Our unit trudged across these streets, making sure that there was no one making a commotion or was posing any serious threat whatsoever. There were 5 of us walking along the sides of the street: You got Sgt. Nelson , Private Jon Brett, and Private Chrishyl German on the left side, and me and Cpl. Hart on the right. We were flanking a Bushmaster which had Pvt. Kellog driving and Pvt. Sanchez on the passenger side. The mission of the day was to patrol the busy Villa Verde Avenue at the heart of East Timor.

Although the city was rid of LMP supporters several weeks ago, suspicious activity is kept being reported everyday, with LMP agents mixing with the civilian population to avoid being caught and in order to send invaluable intel of our movements within the city. Villa Verde was one of these so called LMP blocks, areas where LMP supporters boarded for a few nights and then left for the south.Last night, 27 people were arrested by the Beta Squad of 22nd Battalion, people of whom were suspected to be housing and keeping LMP people and documents. A brief gunfight happened that left 2 soldiers wounded and some 10 to 20 civilians wounded.

Now it seems ironic that the same street that saw a gunfight the night before was now bustling with activity as if nothing happened at all. Though I feel a lot safer in patrolling Dili than before, I still feel that we are still being watched from windows and that tingling sensation that a small pull of a trigger directed at me is just right around the corner. But that feeling ain't new for me anymore, having been in the country for more than 6 months already, I've learned to adjust. A simple smile keeps the peace, a wave means even more security.

I smiled at the little children as they approached and tugged alongside me as I walked. The men drinking were having a lot of fun as I could notice, waving at me and laughing hard, saying things like "Lab Awstrialya" with the little english they know. I waved back to tell them I understand.

So far, the country's capital is peaceful. Our division is making sure it is, the 71st Brigade has been in Dili for about 5 months already. But we always hear reports from the southern brigades of the continuous attacks bombings they face as they try to finish off the LMP's armed wings. Some 10 or maybe 15 troops keep arriving at our base for medical attention, their eyes says it all. This war is a war that will be our Vietnam, our Afghanistan, our Nigeria. I still pray to God every night to keep me and my friends safe, and to help end once and for all this war that shouldnt have started in the first place.

Athens/Café Clotilde, a dialogue between two students

M: Mathias
T: Theodore
W: Waiter

M: “Ugh.”
T: “What is it again, Mathias? Is there something wrong?”
M: “Yes there is! Too much French names! Café Clotilde, Brasserie Chic etc. There is too much French-Latin influence! There is nothing Greek that is standing! Even I am starting to forget the language...”
T: “Chill mate, you are thinking way too hard on this.”
M: “Too hard? Yes, maybe I am. Maybe I should stop thinking and start to act!”
T: “What will you do? Will you become a terrorist? Are you confident enough to pour molten gold on your head like that Hellenic agitator form two years ago? Are you confident enough like the militants who mass migrated to Rhodes and took over the island until the blockade?”
M: “I am not.”
T: “Thought so. If you really care about the survival of the Greek Culture, then why aren’t you making plans to live in Crete-Rhodes? The state ensures dual citizenship with them, remember?”
M: “But I want to stay here! And the Greek Culture should live in the lands that it originated.”
T: “A culture only has the right to live, if the people keeping it alive will it so. As we saw, the Latinasation efforts received the support of the majority of the population. The Hellenic agitators were a minority. And the culture still lives in Crete-Rhodes, you know? I visited there, everyone was speaking Greek.”
M: “Ugh, okay. But beyond that, don’t you think that we are living in an artificial state? The Fregantes Empire. The United Roman Triumvirate. These are not nation states.”
T: “If you ask me, all states are artificial. They are legitimate only if they can provide the necessary living standards for its people, and ours is pretty good in those regards.”
M: “How so?”
T: “Let me show you.”
*Theodore makes a hand gesture to the waiter, which arrives to the scene*
W: “Voulez-vous commander quelque chose, messieurs? (Would you like to order something, gentlemen?)”
T: “Oui, on voudrait un mousse au chocolat et une crème brûlée, s’il vous plaît. (Yes, we would like to have a chocolate mousse and a creme brulee, please)”
W: “D’accord, merci! (Okay, thank you!)”
*Waiter leaves*
M: “What is this supposed to show me? Your exceptional skills in French?”
T: “No. Do you think that waiter is Greek/Fregantese?”
M: “Hmmm, I think so, yes.”
T: “No, if you listen to how he is speaking with his colleagues, you will understand that he is speaking Polish, meaning that he is Calin. They fled their country because of a civil war, and now, they are perfectly integrated, and they have decent jobs and places to live. Not assimilated, mind you. And they are speaking French, because its the Lingua Franca of this country. Do you see the pun?
M: “How funny. Then how come the URT is something acceptable? The Roman Empire is long dead, and we aren’t Romans. We don’t speak Latin.”
T: “The Byzantine irony lives on. The thing is, I don’t care about this URT. But, I do remember the panic in Athens when the old Danubian Federation threatened to invade Albania and Bulgaria. Now, they are one of our greatest allies. We don’t have to worry anymore. We can live in our de facto pacifist state of affairs without any problems, and we get to manage the Europe’s biggest economy. The idea isn’t just about “being Roman”, it is about being pragmatic.”
M: “Talk about Machiavelli. Anyway, did you read the news about that guy who froze to death in Preveza?”
T: “Yes, that stupid test subject. Well, I did. What of it?”
M: “Well, I am quite worried about this subject. The technical explanation seems convincing enough, but the Ministry of Interior to prevent further investigation! That seems fishy! Why the people aren’t revolting over this?”
T: “Becuase they don’t care. And on the medical side, I will take your word since you are the one studying medicine. If I remember correctly, the company involved goes by the name ‘PrevezaMed/Mirai24’. I am not sure though.”
M: “It is correct, and that ‘Mirai24’ part seems concerning. Wasn’t the urban expansion of Preveza given to an organisation by the name ‘Mirai’? I hear that nobody knows anything about it.”
T: “Dunno. That’s a peculiar event, but nothing more. I don’t care. Aside from that, my dad came back from Paris. According to him, the French President paid a visit to the victims of Il Desirido.”
M: “Ugh. I am sick of this conflict! Because of this, I delayed my flight to Rio de Janeiro! I really wanted to see the ‘worker’s paradise’ there.”
T: “My quasi-nationalist, quasi-socialist friend. It is too hard for us, the petit bourgeoisie, to be far-leftists, despite being very interested in its theoretical side. Isn’t it ironic to talk about a classless society, while eating creme brulee in one of the most renowned cafés of Athens?”
M: “Just shut up.”
*The waiter brings the desserts, and the dialogue ends*

How thousands of Italians (including me) became millionaires in only a few years

Thousands of people making millions? Whats the catch you ask? There is one- the opportunity has come and gone. Before you stop reading, let me explain:

Thousands of Cape Thetis/Nuovo Milano (They're increasingly merging into the same thing, think Monaco and Monte Carlo) residents including myself have recently been making millions by selling their property that they owned before Nuovo Milano was the fastest growing city in the world or was a financial centre to property developers who are willing to pay millions for the smallest buildings in the city centre to allow them to bulldoze them and build up.

In 2007 I moved to Nuovo Milano from my parents home just outside of Rome. I decided to move to Nuovo Milano as it was the only place where a millennial could purchase their own home- I was sick of living with my parents and wanted a home of my own and I owned, not just some rented apartment in Rome. In 2007 Nuovo Milano wasn't even a city, it was just a generic large town on the other side of the world from mainland Italy, meaning I was able to purchase a charming 5 floor townhouse built in 1994 which had just been renovated with a marble kitchen and new wood floors, for only Ā97,000 (NAF$112,104). I fell in love with Nuovo Milano and my beautiful home, which I have raised my own family in since 2007, however, the opportunity I was presented with last week was worth selling my home. My slim townhouse, which I paid less that 100,000 Aureuses back in 2007, was officially sold to Lusso Developments for Ā4,326,326 (NAF$5 million) thanks to its great location in the heart of Nuovo Milano right between the financial district and the bustling cultural quarter, truly the perfect city centre location.

Pictured above: My townhouse and what Lusso Developments plans on building in its place

Thousands of 'old' Nuovo Milano residents have taken the exact same route as I have and are planning to move back to mainland Italy with their new found millions (as am I), to make room for ambitious, industrious, young white collar workers who will be buying up most of the new luxury apartments in the city but mainly to to get more value for money in a less dense city such as Rome or Milan, or to buy a mansion in the countryside in a reverse of why I moved to Cape Thetis in the first place (cheaper property). My family and I have purchased a large home with acres of land in the beautiful countryside of Tuscany with money left to spare for private education for my children and a new car, as well as funds for my husband to start his own accounting firm in Florence. We are looking forward to the warmth of the homeland and the vast space we will have, however we will miss the bustling cosmopolitan streets of Nuovo Milano and the coziness of a white Christmas guaranteed every year.

Rubelia's Story

Today, the entire family caught a bus to Cali, the closest city to the village. We took the children, grandma, granddad, our sisters and brothers, my nephews and nieces. It was more of a family outing than anything, but we were all determined to do one thing when we arrived. Marcos had searched on his phone, using an internet as to where the local headquarters of the Movement for Socialism was. It didn't take long, we all signed up to volunteer in the upcoming presidential election, we for sure as hell know who we're voting for! It was only a couple of months ago that, we, as a tightly knit family group, supported President Castillo and what he's doing in the country. I cannot express my feelings well enough for that man, a native, like us, who brought our family and communities out of poverty.

Indigenous and poverty welfare groups, established by the President, did not take long to arrive at our doors, offering us job opportunities and entitlements. My nephew, Samuel, was given a scholarship for a high-end sporting college in Bogota. That was because President Castillo authorised indigenous quotas in the elite schools. Grandma was finally given the help she needed, she now receives a weekly check-up from a doctor from the national healthcare service. My sister, Margareta, now teaches people how to speak Quechan, because of a national effort to increase literacy in indigenous languages. She's flying all over the country now. We've finally got an internet connection in the rural villages. I now work full-time making Coca Sek's, our native Coca beverages. It wasn't long ago when you were thrown into prison for touching Coca.

He's done so much for the country, there is no way I will vote against him. I have my own personal suspicions about the Conservative Coalition anyway. They never campaign in the indigenous and rural areas, their voters are the upper-middle class. It was those bastards who kept our people in poverty since the inception of colonisation. I have no sympathies for them when their businesses are re-distributed and seized, who gave you the right to control our products? God? I doubt it. Now I tend not to even watch 'PuertoVision', it's controlled by the Opposition fat-cats. All you hear on their channel is slander against the President, calls to cut ties with the FSR and re-join Europe's adventures. So, if I ever have the chance to watch a bit of television, I watch TeleSur. Sometimes PBC. On TeleSur, there is a specific native-language show just for us and our people. I don't know anyone in the village who doesn't watch it. It's revolutionised our lives.

Two friends....

OOC: The information contained in the story is unknown to every player ICly.

23:47, Athens. A man in his forties is reading a mail on his laptop, and that’s when the bell rang.

-Ding dong!

“Who is this, at this hour?” thought the man, “I didn’t order Chinese food...”

-“ Open the door JM, it’s me!” said a female voice, a voice which makes the man smile and sigh.

-“Alright”

When he opened the door, he was greeted with a very familiar face. A colleague, an old friend. Indeed, it has been a long time he saw her, besides the other person, a publicity person. He acknowledged that he really missed this sincerity.

-“Hey Léone, it has been a long time.”

-“A long time? We saw each other in the cabinet meeting, you know?”

-“No, I saw a head of the state there, now, I see an old friend. Seriously though, how did you manage to come here unrecognised? And why did you come here in the first place?”

-“Asking too much questions as always, this inquisitiveness of your is really the reason that you are single you know? Now, as for your first question; I wasn’t recognised because I didn’t put on any make up, and for the second; look at these” she said, as she raised a shopping bag with three bottles of beer in it.

-“You know, I don’t drink”

-“Who said that they were for you?” she laughingly exclaimed, as she entered the apartment, “So, what were you doing? The usual chancellorship stuff?”

A bit appalled, he replied, “Yes, I was reading the recent data sent by the Ministry of Economy and the MCG board. They have been formulating a post-war URT and MCG global commerce policy, and sent a draft”

-“I think you can take a break, after all, you have a guest”

-“It seems so”

They sat down, and started to chat a bit, about life, about politics, about old friends. Then, Léone’s face became serious.

-“I need to ask you a question”

-“Sure, go on”

-“About the Preveza Incident, why did the Ministry of Interior ordered the termination of the investigation?”

A hard question to answer. However, he knew all questions were in fact very easy to respond. We just make them harder because of our fears.

-“You know that Mirai cannot be compromised. We can not afford the public to know about what’s going in Preveza”

-“But we are encouraging them to settle in the city, a city not run by a democratically elected civil administration, nor an appointed one from the capital. It is run by a secretive organisation. Are we going to let Mirai become a new sort of mafia?”

-“You know that Mirai will never become a mafia organisation. Mistakes do happen. I need to admit, this issue created a bigger reaction than I anticipated. I heard two teenagers talking about it in a café, and one of them was really worried. Nevertheless, we shouldn’t stop Mirai”

-“We shouldn’t, or we can’t?”

The attack hit home...

-“You know that we can't stop him! Mirai has its own security force, its own sponsors, own board, own treasury, own city! It is a state within a state! And he doesn’t wish to be disturbed, and he can’t be compromised, just as Mirai. In fact, we can say that he is Mirai”

-“You need to talk to him. You need to stop this mess!”

-“I can’t. I can’t...”

Of course he couldn’t. A dead person should stay dead. Mirai cannot be, under any circumstances , compromised. Otherwise it would be the end of the Fregantese State.

“So be it, JM, so be it!” she yelled, and she suddenly left the apartmeet, slamming the door.

He sighed; “Even in death, you dictate things, oh you lively person. A person that hates life, but wants to survive...”

"Name?" the first security guard asked, staring at him with a blank, detached expression.

"Uh, André Broessel. B-R-O," the man began, distracted.

"Here you are. The energy section. Just go straight up to the second floor. Someone can lead you from there."

André just nodded in response, clumsily grabbing at the nametag the security guard offered. He was more anxious than he had ever been, every single nerve in his body buzzing with anticipation. Whatever happened that day could change the course of his entire life; whatever happened today had the potential to put him on a guaranteed path towards success! Thanking the guard and grabbing his possessions, he tentatively stepped through the doorway in front of him, butterflies in his stomach. The numerous security checks and the crowded areas outside had already somehow managed to put him even more on edge. All that stress, however, was momentarily replaced with shock and amazement as soon as he saw the inside of the large building

The entrance led to a giant, crowded area, bustling with activity. There were clearly labelled booths, each with a large monitor and an area to set up, spread throughout the ground floor of the room, creating a complex labyrinth. People of all ages stood next to boards and posters, conversing with one another or setting up their displays further. Numerous TV's on the walls throughout the room all displayed the same colorful slideshow, with "Start-Up Magella Demo" spelled out in big, bold letters at the top.

André felt a little disheartened at the sheer quantity of projects he saw. After all, what were the chances he would be chosen out of all of these other talented, intelligent individuals? Determined to at least try, however, he made his way up the stairs, juggling his stuff in an attempt not to drop it, before being led to an empty booth surrounded by full ones and their assigned innovators.

While waiting for his file to open on the monitor, André listened to the other innovators' conversations and was glad to find out he wasn't the only one nervous, and that he wasn't the only one planning to use the opportunity to become a success. He opened his board, filled with pictures and information about his product, under the monitor, and decorated the table below it with business cards containing his contact information, alongside pamphlets with abridged versions of the information on his board. Like the rest of the applicants there today, he had no start-up yet, or even a working prototype, so he had to rely completely on how he described the potential risks and benefits of his project and why it had the capability to become very widespread. Despite his anxiety, he had built up his confidence beforehand that his project would be chosen. Even the potential applications he could think of were grand and unending.

Taking a step back to get a full view of his completed booth, André let out a sigh of relief. It looked very promising and interesting, finding the right balance between information and images that few around him had managed to discover. Taking a look at the surrounding booths, his project did seem more useful, at least, or at least applicable in a wider variety of situations. He was sure he would be picked based on information about projects alone. So all he needed to do was present the information accurately and effectively.

It only took a couple minutes before André got his first opportunity to show off his ideas. He wasn't sure whether they were someone from the selection committee or a curious innovator or even just someone who bought tickets to the demo; there was no way to differentiate between them. Stomach suddenly flipping with anxiety again, he forced on a smile and turned to the approaching woman.

"Hi!" he greeted her. "Would you like to hear about my solar power generators?"

"Yes mom, I think of staying instead of leaving", Kayna says as she holds the phone. "Yes, Yes, everythings gonna be fine. Please dont worry. What? No, there isnt any shooting happening here.Ok, uh-huh. Yeah , got it. Ok. Love you". She puts the phone back into her pocket as she takes one last sip from her coffee mug. She looks at her phone."Oh no! Dammit! Im gonna be late!", she exclaims as she packs a couple of papers and her laptop into her sling bag.

It's been almost a year since she became an exchange student, first in Cape Thetis and then transferred to Magella,or what was once Magella SSR. Hailing from Perth Australia, she took up to herself to study meticulously and vigorously to earn scholarships since starting high school. After attaining a government scholarship to get a course on Marine Biology. Aged 21, her age has not held her passion to be one of the best in the Magellan university she has been attending.

Image

Fair in complexion, around 5'7 ft and long blonde hair. She has always been popular with many both home and in her university for her wits as well as her looks. And now that beauty and brains was on the run to catch a cab to somewhere.

"Taxi! Taxi! Ahh thank goodness!", she exclaimed as she got on. "Start Up convention please", she directed the driver."Sorry miss, wheres that?", the driver replied."Umm just go downtown city sir, ill tell you the directions and can we go double?". The driver nodded and the cab took off, winding across the narrow streets, nearly missing cars as it went through traffic, and stopping from 50km/hr to 0km/hr in mere seconds."That'll be $7 miss". "Thank you very much!" she said as she drawed the money and got out of the cab and stopped blank at her place as she saw the building, having a gulp or two.

"Well, I never expected this. Here goes.", she said to herself as she took a grip of herself to not get nervous. She approached the entrance of the huge building where a security guard was busy handing out cards. "How can I help you miss?", the guard asked."Umm a friend of mine invited me here, but it seems like she already got inside because I'm pretty bit late", she smiled at the guard nervously. The guard scanned her from top to bottom, making her a bit uneasy, the guard replied, "Well ok then beautiful-", "Ugh", Kayna thought, "Not another pervert"."- help yourself in", guard finished."Thanks a lot", Kayna kept smiling as she finally entered the building.

The inside of the building was full of gizmos, booths and all kinds of stuff. "So this is what they call 'Start-Up', seems very techy", Kayna thought."Now, I gotta start searching. Ugh there's literally hundreds of people here...", she thought at the idea of looking for her friend over the immense number of people and narrow alleys with booths everywhere."I'll start at this corner then", she remarked as she slid past people. There were tons of weird steel inventions, presenters telling about them to the listening crowds and businessmen seemingly recording them from afar. "Never thought this events were always packed. Now where was that booth. I could remember that was like 303 or was it 304.Ugh.", Kayna thought as she wound up into another block of booths that seemingly had far lesser people. "Or i'll just call", she thought. She grabbed her phone, punched some number, and waited. No receive. She tried again.Still nothing. "Ahh no one's picking up.Maybe presenting already".

Just as she turned the corner busy dealing with her phone, she hears a man's voice.

"Hi!" he greeted her. "Would you like to hear about my solar power generators?"

She turned to her right as a man greeted her, seemingly ready to talk about his own presentation, although it certainly looked liked she was the only person around. Kayna thought,"Ugh, Still can't find the booth or even call. Sigh, might as well give this guy an audience".

"Ummm, yeah sure Mr-Br-Br-Bros-", she stammered as she tried reading his name tag."Bros-Bruh-Borri-Brosil?.Is that right? Hehe, yeah sure, I think I can have a bit of time to hear about it.", she replied as she let out another nervous smile.

"And this is what I get for being late...ugh damn alarm clock", she thought again as the man talked about his work.

Preveza-Eastern Greece, the Mirai HQ...

He had to do it. Of course he had to. He had to look, see, understand. Understand what? The Mirai, the most cryptic entity in the entire nation. An organisation, to be precise, an organisation in which he worked as a microbiologist.

He got the job just a year ago, and everything seemed normal. they were conducting a research, concerning the cellular membrane. Recently, the Medical Branch of the organisation encountered a new species of bacteria, which had three different layers of cellular membrane, and these layers were so rigid, no antibiotic oracteriophage could penetrate it. A sample of it was sent to the Microbiology Branch for further study and examination. After two months of research, his team discovered that the additional layers of membrane were sustained thanks to the presence of an unknown protein. This protein, named for the time being RGD-99, is a small protein compared to the other proteins, and ties itself to the lipid structure of the cellular membrane, rendering it more rigid and resilient. It also serves as a receptor, identifying viral DNA/RNA, and refusing its entry. RGD-99 equally increases the potential allignments between lipid molecules, thus, enabling the formation of additional layers of cellular membrane.

When this discovery was reported, the General Secreteriat and the Scientific Administration issued a confiscation order, and the officials destroyed all copies of the orginal documents. In addition, starting from the next day, the head of the research team, Mrs. Cougean, went missing without any explanation. This was too much for him. He demanded an explanation, no, all explanations possibl about ths damned organisation! Who is running it? What is its goal? What sort of connection does it have with the government? So many questions to be answered....

Night fell, it was 20:00. He had the authorisation to stay since he had more research to do. After finishing the last touches on a few reports, he left his room, and made his way to the archives.

He had a problem though, the door of the archives was locked, and a master key card was needed. Love and behold, there was such a card on the floor just two steps away. "Way too coincidental, is this a trap?" he thought. Nevertheless, he entered the room. It was a relatively small room, with a single computer on a desk. He turned on the computer, and opened the file "Mirai-Archives". It was a gigantic file, with thousands of other files inside it. Luckily, he found the file of his branch, then, the file of their last research named "Reasearch Log: RGC-99". He opened the file, and found a only one document.

October 20th 2019
The Microbiology Branch, Research Log: RGD-99

RGD-99 is a newly discovered protein, whose family is yet to be determined. As already explained in the Research Report #675, the protein is associated with an increase in memebrane rigidity and resilience, and additional memebrane layers. More technical details can be acquired from the said report.

Upon the report of the discovery of RGD-99, the General Secretariat, and the Scientific Administration held a meeting. It was decided that the protein was too dangerous to be studied by low rank reasearch divisions, and it should be confiscated, and transported to the AFM Research Facility (whose location is confidential). All copies were destroyed, the original documents being confiscated as well. The aforementioned danger is not from any immidiate threat to human health, but an immense potential for biological weapons. As such, further studies will be conducted under the supervision of the General Secretariat.

In accordance with the General Secretariat's orders, the life of the head of the research team, Dr. Marilyn COUGEAN, was termiated. Her body will be used as a cadavre for further studies.

Shock, rage, mourning. He felt these and only these. Just WHO were these people? Who were these monsters ? Why were they doing such a thing? RGD-99 had the create a new future for science, why they were keeping it secret? Why wasn't the rest of the team, he himself included, weren't killed?

He went to the very first document in the file, the oldest of them all, the first document of the archives.

CONSULAR ORDER #89

By the orders of the Great Consul of the Senatorial State, Maxvellein Relhophen Fregantes, a new organisation will be thus created to further increase the scientific output of the Empire. The organisation's name is declared to be "Mirai" and will be granted access to all scientific data in the Empire, and will be subjected to no investigation. It will be prohibited to leak any information within the organisaiton, as the organisaton is to be cryptic at all times. By all means, the organisation is NOT a subject of the law, and its jurisdiction belongs to the Great Consul.

[EXPUNGED]

I am writing this addition to the first log, in hopes that someone will one day read it. Mirai is corrupted. Not by money, no, but by arrogance. The General Secretariat has no interest in protecting the public from the potential dangers of our experiments, and even threathens the government in case of an ivestigation. They have comissioned a private army, a private treasury, and a private city, thus being a state within a state. General Secretary wishes to expand the grip of the organisation over the country, while the Scientific Administrator desires to break more ethical barriers. That frozen man was just the beginning. Many consider it as a miracle that Mirai didn't spread to Austro-Danubia and Italy, but it isn't a coincidence, but a calculated move. They will be safer in their home territory, but they indeed do send scientists as spies to many nations. The General Secretary isn't the person he claims to be. I don't know who he is, his face is too changed and "deformed" for that, but he is dangerous. He must be stopped.

Marilyn COUGEAN

"WHAT? Maybe this was the real reason for her death!" he said to himself. A moment later, the door was opened, and a man appeared, a man whom he somewhat recongised, and couldn't dare to move when he did so. He was someone who should have been long dead. Raising his pistol, he said: "You know, your colleague died for writing that, and we have been using it as a bait fpr curious people. You must be the sixteenth persın to die, I think. Farewell".

The man pulled the trigger and shot him on the head. Before death, the last thing he could think of was a single word: "Emperor"
"Long live the legacy of the Roman Empire!"

Getting a call to the office of the head of the fleet was never a good thing, it usually either meant demotion or you being relieved of command. The question was which one was more likely? That was the thought going through the head of Commander Saito Izumi waiting just outside the office of Rear Admiral Showa. Normally he would pace or tap his shoes, but he rigidly stood at attention, not sure if the secretary in the waiting room with him was monitoring him for the Admiral. Dammit Saito what did you do this time? he thought to himself, Two tours of duty and five years of climbing the ladder could all be thrown out the window! Now think! What the hell did I-" He is stopped mid-thought as the secretary looks over to him. She smiles and says "The Admiral will see you now." He wastes no time standing up and bowing to the secretary before opening the door to the Admiral's office.

The office was relatively sparse with only a few photos and awards plaques decorated in it, the only pieces of furniture were a few chairs and a large oak desk. Behind the desk sat an older man with greying hair and a thick beard. His sunken eyes watch Saito as he enters the room. Saito closes the door behind him and walks to the center of the room, coming to attention and raising a salute, "Sir! Commander Saito Izumi reporting as requested."

The Admiral waves his hand in the air, "At ease Commander, no need for formalities here." He motions to the two seats in front of his desk, "Please sit down."

Saito nods and sits in the left chair, still tense. Saito had never met Admiral Showa before. He was joking called 'Grandpa' within the fleet as the 67 year old man was well past his age to be in the military. More then that though, he would often take a personal interest in the well being of his men and ships, often sending them care packages and giving them extra days on shore leave. However, if anyone crossed him or if someone stepped out of line he would not hesitate to kick them into a different fleet or demote them. Saito gulped upon thinking of the latter.

The Admiral grabbed a file on his desk and adjusted his reading glasses on his face, "Commander Izumi, I am calling you to my office to tell you that you will no longer be the acting XO on the I-503." The words were like a punch to the gut. He had been on the I-503 for two years now, it had been by far his most enjoyable post. Before he could say anything the old Admiral continued, "You will be transferred to the Ryukyu Outreach Project, better known as ROP, effective immediately." Internally Saito breathed a sigh of relief, no demotion. But what was the ROP? He had never heard of it before. The admiral looked up from the paper at the Commander, "I assume that you have a few questions right now."

Saito nodded, "Yes sir. I am afraid I am not familiar with the ROP nor do I understand why you are giving me this transfer in person rather then by letter. Not that I have an issue with it sir, it just seems to be something that could have been handled by another staff member."

Showa chuckles, "Well that would be due to the fact that during this assignment you will be reporting directly to me."

Saito sits in his chair stunned, his possible demotion seemed to have turned into a promotion and a very important one at that. Seeing Saito's shocked face Showa laughs, "I don't give the axe to everyone who walks through those doors." He picks the file up off his desk, "These records on you and your service are exemplary, five years of service to the Navy. Top of your class at the Academy in underwater warfare and so many recommendations in your file from professors, captains, and crew members that I have a separate folder for them in my desk." He puts the file back on his desk, "By all accounts you could be sitting in my chair one day. You are a phenomenal officer, but unfortunately I need a little bit more then just an officer for this assignment."

"Sir?" Saito says a bit confused. Showa pulled up a second folder, "Military records only go so far for what I need, so I did some extra digging. Before the military you were enrolled at the Osaka University studying Economics on your father's request." Upon hearing the Admiral bring up his father Saito curled up his fingers around his knees. "You also took a minor in Environmental Science which was of your choice from what I have read." He puts the second file on the desk as well, "Why did you choose the military over a college degree?"

Saito looks at Showa, "Is that an order sir?"

Showa shakes his head, "No, its a friendly request that's all.

Saito sighs, "Me and my father have our differences. He saw a future for me following in his footsteps as a stock broker, I wanted to make a difference. After two years of classes I decided that I needed to follow my own path and enrolled in the Navy. My father was furious and I haven't spoken to him in four years now, but I have never once regretted that choice."

The Admiral nods, "You spoke up for what you felt was right and you acted on it. Which is why you are exactly who I need on this Project."

Saito raised one of his eyebrows, "Sir what exactly is this project? And what makes you so sure I'm the right fit for it."

Showa leans back in his chair, "A few days ago the Japanese Government purchased the New Tokyo Colony in the R.E.Z. and ever since we did we have been wondering what to do with it. The government was split three ways in wanting it for economic use, a military base, or a science center. In the end the government decided to do all three under the supervision of the military."

"A reassignment to a navy base?" Saito says still confused, "Will I be supervising the civilians on the station as private secutiry or be the tactical officer for the military."

"Not quite." Show says leaning forward onto his desk, "You're going to be in command."

"....In...command...." Saito says processing the words. It takes another minute for him to realize what the Admiral just told him, "Wait, you want ME in command of New Tokyo Station!"

"That is correct Commander." Showa says, enjoying the disbelief from Saito. "We need someone who understands the economic and scientific aspects of the station in command of the station and someone who is flexible with his duties. We also need someone young since almost all of the old guard consider this endeavor to be....futile. I myself and still not convinced about the idea which is why I need someone to tell me what is going on with the operation, not what I want to hear. That is why I think there is no one better then you for this assignment."

"My own command....." Saito says. It was by far not the command he expected but it had been his dream to eventually command his own ship. It could be the stepping stone for a full naval position at sea. He looks at Showa, "Sir, I would be happy to carry out this assignment and am looking forward to the challenge."

Showa hands him a file, "Oh don't worry you will get more then enough challenge, half the station is offline and flooded. Plus half the civilian personnel are always at odds with one another, especially the Australian Security Chief who runs the civilian side. You will have your hands busy for quite a while but I have no doubt you will meet the challenge. I have transfer 47 other military personnel to the station and the Pacific, a brand new small scale submarine that is meant for patrol purposes."

Saito takes the file and opens it reading logs and status reports in a quick glace, "Well then sir it looks like I have a lot of reading to do."

"You better do it quickly." He says standing up. Saito stands as well and the two salute one another. "I want you to report to the docks by 1800 tonight for transport to New Tokyo, so do some of that reading on the way."

The two drop the salute. "Thank you for this opportunity sir." Saito says, "By this time next year I hope to be able to invite you to the station to show you that I not only meet your expectations, but I will exceed them."

The Admiral grins, "I look forward to that day Commander, dismissed!"

Government House, Nuovo Milano Government Quarter:

Governor Luigi Binelli Mantelli's secretary entered his office in a seemingly hurried manner, ushering him to end his phone call so she could speak to him. "Governor, Mr Marino of Marino & Co is here to speak to you, I believe it is an important matter."

"Send him in." Governor Mantelli commanded in an abrupt manner.

"Governor, its a pleasure to see you again, I don't have much time so I'll make this quick." Mr Marino exclaimed after entering the office with an air of arrogant flamboyance.

Recognising that Mr Marino only visits him personally when he wants something to be done 'off-the-books', the governor hardened his stance and snapped back "What is it that you want today Mr Marino? Another shady tax exemption?" The Governor was secretly anxious, as he knew that Mr Marino would have something on him to get him into doing whatever illegal deed the toxic businessman wanted.

With a grin on his face, Mr Marino responded "Bellezza Street, I want to expand my corporate offices to a plot on that street. The only issue is that some stupid old man is refusing to give up the land no matter how much my firm offers him, the stubborn old fool." Mr Marino's grin suddenly turned deadpan as he stared directly into the Governors eyes "I want him out by tomorrow lunchtime, thats when the bulldozers arrive."

The Governors blood was boiling, he shot up from his desk and smashed his clenched fist on his disk "HOW DARE YOU!" he screamed as his face turned blood red, "GET OUT OF MY OFFICE... AND GET OUT OF MY BUILDING!" He sat down and breathed a huge sigh, his hands still shaking in rage. His old age meant he couldn't sustain such a high level of anger as it raised his blood pressure too much.

Mr Marino arrogantly chuckled at the exhausted Governor "Look buddy, if you don't get rid of that stubborn old man, my firm's multi-million aureus sponsorship budget is going to your competitor in the upcoming election." He leaned over the Governor, "Oh, and also my firm has just put in an offer to buy the Cape Thetis Chronicle, looks like they won't be supporting your campaign either, buddy..." He turned around and began to swagger out of the office.

"Fine." The Governor reluctantly mumbled. "He'll be gone by tomorrow morning, I'll have to have him reimbursed for the loss of his property and put in social housing until he can find a new home."

"Chain a rock to his ankle and chuck him in the Atlantic for all I care, as long as he's gone when the bulldozers arrive. See ya' at the opening ceremony Governor." Mr Marino then proceeded to leave the office, not bothering to close the door behind him.

Governor Mantelli leaned back in his chair and held his hand over his face in disappointment with himself "What have I done?" He quietly whispered to himself, before gradually getting back to work with an added stress on his back. "Another skeleton in the bursting closet..." The Governor thought to himself.

Camp Century, Greenland
Top Secret Sixth Republic Military Facility

Corporal Le Roux was awoken by the piercing sound of an alarm echoing through his compartment. In a daze, he hurriedly dressed and put on his uniform. Surely the South Americans haven't gone and started World War Four? he thought, fear gripping him. For weeks now the base's garrison had been gossiping behind the backs of their officers, arguing over whether their country would get drawn into the war between the Great Powers on each side of the Atlantic. Now it seemed, something terrible had happened to make such an event reality. He could hear the raised voices of other people in the base yelling in the main corridor, barking orders and instructions over the loud klaxon. Quickly, as he was trained to do, he made his way down the crowded walkway, trying to keep out of the way of those moving in the opposite direction. After about three minutes, he had arrived at his post along with four of his countrymen. They too looked nervous. No foreign nation knew that 50 French warheads were at this very moment concealed in Greenland, some 'only' with a yield of 150 kilotons, while others were a far larger 5 megatons. Even the Nordic Federation, who had been ceded control of the state more than a year ago, did not question what the Confederation's remaining bases were used for. The facility had been built first the Americans in the Cold War, and then restored by the Republic long after the secret was buried by the American-Soviet War, with one main purpose; the ability to launch intercontinental ballistic missiles against hostile cities. But if that was what they were about to be ordered to do, if Le Roux was indeed about to be apart of an act which would cause the deaths of millions, what must have happened to Paris? Has that dictator Castillo, or the Orostani-dominated FSR regime, already rained down hellfire against our capitol? he wondered. Before he could contemplate that train of thought further however, or weigh up other possibilities, he and the other operators were interrupted by an order from their commander over the intercom.

"Enter the first code for verification."

Le Roux turned to glance at his colleagues. Two of them looked back with matching faces reflecting concern, while the others had already begun to type their codes into their missile's arming computers. Shaking his head, Le Roux entered the 12 digit code he had been made to memorize as part of his training. For a moment his machine did not change, but he knew that it was authenticating that the code entered had been confirmed by the Defense Ministry. Sure enough, a few seconds later a light turned green. They were only moments away from giving their President of the Confederation, if he was still alive, the ability to launch a nuclear barrage against any target of his choosing. Le Roux smiled at the irony; he had voted for the Opposition last election.

"Do not enter the second code, repeat; do not enter the second code."

Le Roux looked up from his computer terminal in surprise and relief. It took a few seconds before it clicked. In that moment he knew what must be happening; it was an exercise. Paris had not been annihilated by South American missiles. The military and political elite must have wanted to make certain that their deterrence force was ready if required during the crisis, in case it was needed. In case the ongoing war did escalate; always a possibility given what had happened in the first Nigerian War. The young corporal leaned back in his chair and wiped away sweat with shaking hands. The Sixth Republic would not end today, and he would not have to follow through an order to kill millions of those living in Rio, Bogota, and elsewhere.

"End the procedure and report for simulation review and analysis."

People began to crowd into the warehouse, all matching in their beige uniforms. Camila was a devote member of the National Bolivarian People's Brigade, established by President Castillo in order to rally the people in defence of the nation. It is, technically, a branch of the National Bolivarian Armed Forces, however those who volunteer are not paid. Hence, it draws many in support of Castillo's socialist efforts in the nation, in what they perceive as a concerted task by Europeans to unravel the President's progress. The on-going war in the Caribbean has only spurred membership in the people's militia, and one of these people are Camila. The entire crowd waited patiently as a military officer took to the podium. It was a small, local meeting and it was seen as an honour that such military officer offered to head this NBPB general meeting.

"We will firstly start with the oath, please stand," he said. The crowd stood up from their old, plastic chairs. With unison, they raised their clenched fists in the air and repeated the oath together.

"We pledge, as loyal members of the National Bolivarian People's Brigade, to uphold the tenants and values of the Bolivarian Revolution. To protect the independent progression of all our people from threats both external and internal. Long live the Bolivarian Revolution!"

They sat back down, and the military officer assumed talking.

"The first step of order today: our reaction to the European threat off the coast of Puertollano. As we are all aware, certain European powers believe they have a god-given right to the soil that belongs to the people of the Caribbean and South America. The Germanic Union is lording over ripe Caribbean soil, only a few kilometers from the coast of our nation. Naturally, our government has begun efforts to liberate these pockets of European imperialism, an ugly stain on the modern world. It is our duty to defend the borders of Puertollano against any foreign incursion, as our oath reads, and this is one of the most volatile situations we have seen yet. I don't want to fearmonger, but we do not yet grasp the hateful and vile neocolonialist measures that such nations like Austria could take against us. Hence, be prepared! Rally your community, and always have you gun by your side.

Our next topic of discussion is the announcement from the Conservative Coalition --" several boos interrupted his speech, he smiled and laughed it off. ".. Yes, well, the Conservative Coalition have announced that, if elected, they will cut all funding to the National Bolivarian People's Brigades. They call us a 'political arm' of Castillo and other .. retarded corporate talking points. Keep this is mind for the Presidential Election, do we want a defenceless nation? No! Do we want to see the Bolivarian Revolution undone? No!" The crowd began to get a little more rowdy, shouting 'No!' along with him. Camila was chanting along. "Alright, well I see you're all getting a little riled up, so we'll take a ten minute break. Next we'll be voting on whether we should issue a condemnation of PuertoVision."

Invovled Countries Through Location: Balabac Island, Australian Territory
RL Date:June 21, 2018
Democritus Date:October 22, 2019

The Australian ship rocked about the waves as the dawning sun appeared in the east, the women and children were still sound asleep except for some early birds looking as well at the horizon. The breeze swirled across the ship's deck and sides, calm as ever.

It's been 2 weeks since we left the coasts of Magella and landed on Balabac Island. Fear of the upcoming war forced me and my family to leave what was yet to come. When I heard news from several friends that the Australians were accepting refugees and evacuating them across the ocean, I thought to myself this was a God given opportunity for my family to have a better and safe life. I felt sad to leave Arica ,the land of my birth, but I had to take the opportunity than to take a risk of falling under bombs and guns and the fear of an apocalypse.

Image

From Arica we took the journey of more than a 1,000 mi south to the port city of Valparaiso where the Australian ships were said to be evacuating people. On the start of the trip we were joined by several vehicles, families who were also moving either just south or also taking the journey to Valparaiso. We did not know what to expect, but the longer we drove past towns and cities, the more cars that seemed to take the same route as ours. After a 2 days of non stop driving we finally arrived in the city, I left my car to a close relative for safekeeping while me , my wife Angela, 39; and 2 kids, Rica, 16; and Isabella, 18; went to the piers to find the Australian ships.

The ships were huge compared to the nearby Magellan ships, some of the Australian ships were military ones while most were huge cruise ships. When we arrived there there were already several long queues of people. Many were Magellans, some were Australian students and citizens being evacuated, while others were from Puertollano and the FSR. It dawned on me that the Australians were evacuating anyone who wished so regardless of nationality, or so we thought. We waited for nearly 3 hours, during that time we waited under the sun and looked as Australian ships began to set sail with the thousands of people on them waving at local news cameras who covered the scenes. When it was our time to board we were first checked prior for any weapons, sharp materials, liquor, smokes and drugs. We were also asked questions, which were quite hard to understand because it was in English, luckily a Australian student behind us intervened to help as a translator.

The ship we boarded was called the Orient of the Sea, it was a cruise ship that could fit probably 2,000 or 3,000 people. I really dont know, all I know is that the ship was crowded but not that much, crowded like you cant just hit anyone everytime you walked down the ship.

It was already 5:00 PM when the ship's captain finally announced that we were finally leaving for Australia. People cheered at the news. My tummy itself was growling. The captain over the PA directed that food will be served to us by the ship's staff and that none of us should rush around to the kitchen or it would cause a stampede, unfortunately many people still rushed to the ship's staff to get loaves of bread and water. But we finally were able to get our food, a pack of bread, a 3 kg bottle of water and some chocolate bars. For us 4 in the family that was good enough for 3 days or 4. But according to the staff member we got it from, we had to share it with the 8 other people nearby with us. The ship just had little food on it for all of us.

Image

On the 2nd day of the cruise, it was hot and humid, I decided to go to the comfort rooms, but it too had a long queue. I decided for me and my family to go to the ship's bow so that we could enjoy the view from there. We were able to find a nice shady spot.By that time, we were joined by 2 other cruise ships, people on each ship waved at each other as the journey moved.

For the rest of the week, our stay in the Orient of the Sea was lackluster, though we were able to enjoy the fresh air, we were quite starving of some 2 days of not eating. People were getting sick as well and some argued with the ship's crew. The crew were able to stop the arguments with what little food scraps they had. But it didn't last. By the 8th day of the journey,we were in the middle of the Pacific without food, medicine and other provisions. Most people had just decided to lay low and hope for the best while some tried to fight their way to the captain's cabin.

But as from a miracle, a big ship with a flat surface with helicopters parked arrived. Australian soldiers were on its deck with many boxes. The Orient's crew laid down an iron ladder as the two ships slowly neared on each others sides. The Australian soldiers hurriedly brought in boxes to the crew and also distributed them to the hapless. The people aboard the Orient were ecstatic and their spirits renewed. I was given a heavy box, other than struggle I was glad that it was heavy. Inside there were cookies, loaves of bread, canned food good for 5 days, noodles, water bottles, some clean underwear, a pair of slippers, a box of medicine and a small sling bag. My family was happy as well as many on board. The PA sounded as the Captain, which we have not heard for days spoke. "The Australian Navy will be carrying out the sick and in need of medicine to the military ship. If you have a member that is sick please go to one of our crew members or soldiers". The sick were moved across the iron ladder to the big flat ship, and the rest of the soldiers followed as the iron ladders were finally pulled back. We waved at the soldiers as the ship carried on the journey to Australia.

For the next 6-7 days the ship was in good spirits as people started talking about their lives, work and what they did in Magella as well as their plans. I enjoyed company with my wife and kids as we spent the evenings singing along with other people in the ship's club and spent the mornings enjoying sunbathing. But then again the captain over the PA spoke:"Im sorry to inform you people, but our course has been diverted to Balabac Island in the Philippines". The people groaned and there was a bit of uncertainty in the air. What was this island? Whats waiting for us there? Will we ever achieve the dream we dreamed of? Questions kept coming. This long into the journey and we were not landing on Australia? I was filled with anger over the lies the Australians promised of. I didnt expect this, but it was the best I could've hoped for. And boy I will never forget that I should've never underestimated that Balabac Island.

By the time we had landed on Balabac, it had already been 14 days since we left Magella, Australian soldiers were waiting for us, they helped with the luggage and escorted us to several awaiting buses. A tall guy greeted us in Spanish and English. "Gentlemen welcome to Balabac". The buses transported us to a place called Annex A where there were some 14 or 15 high rise buildings, probably 15 to 20 floors each. The tall guy once again greeted us and told us ,"Gentlemen, Anenx A's condominiums built by Italy will be your temporary homes, our staff and soldiers will be handing you out booklets, a map and a key with your room number. The Australian government will see to it that all of you will enjoy your stay in the Island and will be improving the conditions sooner".

The soldiers began handing us out the things. We were given a room on the 5th floor, we thought we would be the only people to be on it since we were already a family, but we found out that we would be sharing it with 4 more people. Luckily they turned out to be nice people and the rooms were big enough as each room unit actually had two floors, with 6 bedrooms with queen sized beds, 4 bathrooms and a long dinner table. Outside at the center of the condo buildings was a football field where people could play football, to the south of it there were basketball courts and tennis courts. Just near the entrance there was a 50 m swimming pool and nearby it were several local Filipino shops that served Spanish food. I then learned that there were 5 other Annexes such as ours.

Image

After 3 or 4 days, the tall guy arrived back and assembled us at the football field. "The government has received numerous investments from abroad to help you, by this time tomorrow we will be offering you a list of work occupations in the nearby developing urban area for you to be able to support your families. But do not worry, the Australian government with coordination with Magella will be handing out subsidies and support for helping those who wish to build retail industries. The Australian Naval base is also seeking for workers to help serve as maintenance workers and support crews with fair pay. We are also seeking those fluent in English for some jobs. Those with children who want to continue studying will be given the opportunity to fly to Australia and study there under Australian subsidy as long as they maintain exemplary standings and good conduct"

I was more than thrilled to hear the news. The very next day, I was able to get a job as an engineer at a local Italian construction project, Rica and Isabella were given scholarships at Sydney, and my wife was able to open a new coffee shop near the pool. Best news of all, the tall guy said that, "With the right time and laws, the government might be able to offer free citizenship to those here who prove to be consistent, exemplary and are in the eyes of the Australian law, worth it", he smiled as he went back to his car as we cheered, cried and smiled at each other.

T'was a good day to have been in Balabac.

Federation of Socialist Republics - Orostani SFR - Brasilia

He pulled the cigar out of his mouth holding it nearly horizontal to the floor with his index and missile fingers. His elbow was resting on his desk, the wooden object that had been his workstation for years.

"What did you say?"

The younger man (barely an adult) sitting across from him hesitated a moment before speaking. The plastic shape of a NIB identification card was visible on his white formal shirt. It listed him as an intern in the Board's financial division. He was visibly tense, and most definitely not relaxed.

"W-Well I said-"

The cigar man gave a tired sigh, then interrupted him.

"Relax kid, I'm not going to bite your head off."

Mr. Cigar leaned back slightly in the chair, his cigar smoking slightly as he placed it into an ash tray on his desk. The electric lights above made it cast only a small shadow. Right now in the window behind him, a freight train was crossing over a bridge pulling double stack container cars as the city kept on moving, as all cities do,

"Just tell me what you've got to tell me."

The intern's shoulders relaxed slightly as he prepared to deliver his message.

"The, uh, the military is requisitioning 10% of the NIB's yearly surplus."

Cigar glanced to a bookshelf to his left, which completely covered the left wall of his office. It was full of budgeting and accounting records mostly, but a worn copy of Marx's Capital stuck out slightly from an eye level shelf, the closest on its shelf to Mr. Cigar. Bringing himself forward and closer to the Intern before speaking, he answered;

"Well, I can't say I didn't expect it."

Every year the military took more. It seemed all they were interested with was their goddamn bombs and accounting irregularities.

Someone was bound to notice this soon. You can't hide these huge numbers on a public balance sheet.

Despite no physical identifier, Andre knew almost immediately that the woman in front of him was not part of the selection committee. She had a slight accent and didn't look to be a native Magellan, and seemed a bit flustered and distracted. Both relieved at the fact that he wasn't currently being judged and anxious at presenting his project effectivelly, he stammered for a little bit but regained his confidence soon enough.

"My project is a solar power generator that is quite unlike any others currently in use. It would be much more effective, able to gather solar energy from a larger range of places and able to collect energy even on extremely cloudy days or from the moon. The spherical part of it focuses sunlight from many different angles into one concentrated beam, which is aimed at a small PV panel. As the sun moves throughout the sky during the day, the concentrated beam comes out from different parts of the sphere. However, the fully rotational PV panel follows the beam to collect the maximum amount of energy," he said, handing her a pamphlet and changing the slides on the monitor.

As she seemed to get more interested, Andre pushed on with his presentation, gaining the interest of some other people nearby. Smiling and handing them pamphlets as well, he continued. "'What cocktail of chemicals lies inside the sphere', you may ask. Well, that's just the thing. It's 100% water, nothing else. Not only would these solar generators be much smaller than the traditional ones, they also use a much smaller amount of PV cells, and would cost significantly less while also providing up to 60% more energy."

He noticed a couple people conversing about his project in hushed tones. Their formal attire and tablets, which were used for notes on presentations, gave them away. Definitely selection committeepeople, and they looked, at the very least, impressed. "Currently, this idea is just that: an idea. However, the scientific principles behind the project have all been proven valid on multiple occasions, and the early workings of a prototype I have is proving successful. With the proper funding, this could revolutionize solar energy. The average household of four people would only need three spheres to power every single thing in their houses—and then some. Businesses could put them on the sides or tops of buildings, eliminating their energy costs. These can even become electric car chargers, if necessary. And they can work everywhere there is sunlight!"

He continued talking about his project some more before ending the presentation, handing business cards to the group—including the two he had pegged as being on the selection committee. He presented all day, so much so that he almost ran out of cards, despite bringing hundreds. He came back the next day, and the next, for all days of the S Factory presentations. He was determined to get in, and he was sure he would.

An El Commercio Article

Michel Palin thought that he had everything. He was one of the top engineers in his cooperative and lived quite a comfortable life. He, however, had a secret who he didn't tell others. He invested in the stock market, a thing which was fairly stigmatized in Andea for being capitalistic in nature. Andea itself didn't have a stock market, however, thanks to the internet it was now possible to invest in foreign markets from anywhere with wifi.

Michel had started playing the market fairly recently, only several months ago. Over that time, he grew the value of his portfolio by quite a bit. Over the course of four months, he had achieved a gain of fourteen percent and began to have delusions of being an investment expert. Namely, that time he went all in on Micron Technology brought him quite a bit of money, however, he grew jealous at seeing others make far greater gains than him. He was unsure how, but he persisted investing.

However, one day he had a revelation that changed everything, Michel learned what options were. He quickly received permission to purchase them, and thus entered into a dangerous world where with a single contract, a stock moving by a dollar will cost or gain you a hundred bucks.

With the opportunity of making money in the air, on the advice of an online investment community, he took out as many loans as he could, including foreign loans. Michel even went as far as somehow managing to secure a 500k unsubsidized student loan from Germany, a country which the FSR is basically at war with.

He was just in time to see iQIYI stock, named $IQ plummeting after unprecedented growth. IQ is dubbed the "Netflix of China," and had become quite popular amongst online investing communities due to its constant growth. However, the trend had suddenly flipped that fateful day.

Michel concluded that this dip was an overreaction from the market. After all, the company still had plenty of growth left, and the market had overreacted plenty of times in the past. Because of that, he decided to quit his job and also bought IQ OTM Calls fully leveraged. Michel said that he thought that he'd be the first Andean millionaire since 1920, even though it is somewhat doubtful if the Andean government would have allowed such a thing to occur. Regardless, in anticipation, he posted what he was doing online, in a post where he said he was "YOLO'ing" everything on IQ.

And although it seemed impossible, his IQ went lower. With it in the last trading day having dropped by 6%, Michel panic sold at a huge loss. Michel today has since lost ten pounds and lives on state welfare. The situation with his creditors is still undetermined, but rumors have it that he's planning to file for bankruptcy, the first Andean to do so in over a hundred years.

"Tell me why again you couldn't just get a story from a place that is, oh I don't know, that isn't the Abyss?!" moans Kaito once more.

"Isn't it obvious?" Shina says looking out the window on the port side, "Whats the fun in getting a story where I don't break the law?"

The submarine pilot moans once more as the small exploration sub silently pushes forward into the Abyss's Restricted Zone. About a week ago Shina had come to Kaito asking for his help on a new story she was writing and she wanted some up close shots using his submarine. Expecting something about the mining operations or New Tokyo Kaito had agreed and it had only been once they were 500 feet underwater that Shina told him the actual location of her story. Had it not been for the wad of cash she had brought with her, Kaito would have opened the pressure hatch and shot to the surface then and there.

"I'm just saying." Kaito says grumbling, "New Tokyo would have been much better. Heard the new commander there is trying to shape things up, plus the government won't blow us up for heading there." Shina glares at him and he shrugs, "Just saying. If we get caught we're in big trouble."

Shina rolls her eyes, "Aren't you at all curious as to why this zone is 'Restricted'? Ever since the Clear Vision Act we have had unrestricted access to nearly all locations within Japanese waters, except for Arz." She says referring to the zone. She looks out the window again, this time looking in the view port above them seeing if any subfighters were prowling the waters. They were three feet above the ocean floor with lights off so unless a subfighter was directly above them and using visuals they would be safe.

"Look, I get that you want something to be out here, but the government has cleared this area for shakedown cruises for their ships from the Abyss." Kaito says adjusting his course to avoid a nearby rock, "They don't want civilians getting in the way during weapons testing."

"You're right, partially." Shina says pulling up the map of the ocean floor on her tablet, "The Arz extends nearly 30 square nautical miles, but these five that we are checking out here have never been used for naval drills or operations. In fact they have never been used for anything. The only thing I have found around this area is a large number of reported patrols by subfighters."

Kaito presses a few buttons to adjust the speed causing the submarine to shudder a bit, "Huh....that is kinda strange. Maybe its a subfighter hanger bay or a testing facility for the MF-9, the military has been tight lipped on that."

"Thats what I'm thinking too." Shina says putting the tablet away, "Getting a picture of one of those would get me front page of the site for sure. New Subfighter already in Production, I can see the headline now!" She says spreading her hands in front of her.

Kaito laughs, "Well missy, make sure to include me in that, I want to get credit for risking my neck during this."

"Of course! Let me just take away some of that paycheck of yours and we can call it a deal."

"Shut it."

"Wow no sense of-"

"Stop talking." He says leaning forward in his seat, "Do you see that?"

Shina looks ahead of them and sees a faint glow in the distance, "Yea....can you get closer?"

Kaito smirks as he increases speed, "Is the Pope Catholic?"

The small sub presses forward up a small incline, weaving through rocks and making sure not to send plumes of silt behind it. When the sub reaches the top of the incline Kaito presses the sub forward so it is looking down the ridge the craft is now sitting on. "What the Hell....?"

In front of them was a massive complex, lit by huge floodlights. Over top of the facility was a massive mesh net that rose up nearly 50 feet and was secured to the seabed by massive pylons, preventing the light from being seen from the surface. But that wasn't what caused both of them to be speechless, it was what the complex housed. Before either of them could say anything Kaito slammed into reverse and turned the sub around back down the incline. Shina turned to him, "Did you see that!?"

"YES! Why the hell do you think I am getting us out of here." Kaito said going as fast as possible without alerting the Navy patrols. "We are in way over our heads here!"

"Did you see that thing! It has to be a new sort of battlecruiser, maybe the BSX! They never did launch it!" Shina says her eyes gleaming, "This is going to be a great story!"

"It ain't a Kongo thats for sure, and it looked like it had Ballistic Missiles on it too. None of our subs have that!" Kaito says dodging a rock again, "Whatever it is we shouldn't have seen it!"

As the sub comes down the ridge a hail of bubbles cuts in front of them. To anyone not familiar with Japan that would have seemed strange, but to anyone who was they knew caviating bullets when they saw them. Two subfighters streaked by their small sub, shaking the craft. "Oh SHIT!" Kaito yells, bringing the sub to a full stop. "Where did they come from?!"

"Don't worry about that, just get us the hell out of here." Shina says frantically, her adventurous attitude clearly gone.

"Not in this bucket, I can barely do 30 knots, they do 85! We can't outrun them." He says fanatically pressing buttons on his control panel.

"OK, then what can we do!" Shin asks as the subfighters appear again coming back around for another pass.

"THIS!" Kaito yells as he turns every thruster and propeller he has on. The tiny sub sends a plume of silt up surrounding it and causing the subfighters to fire blindly, missing the craft. Unfortunately, while the silt had saved them they were now blind too.

"OK great, now where to?" Shina asks now terrified.

"Ummmm....." Kaito says panicking for a moment, "Screw it!" He says as he randomly picks a direction and sends the craft streaming at 30 knots, not bothering to conceal himself any more. The high speeds send up even more silt, causing a smokescreen to follow the sub, concealing it from the subfighters above. The sub rocks and shudders as it impacts objects on the ocean floor or possibly getting hit by bullets, Kaito didn't know or care which all he knew was that half the systems were starting to fail and he had no idea where he was going. Suddenly the silt cover disappeared in and instant and the cabin was flooded with light. In horrid realization, Kaito realized that he had gotten turned around and was now back at the compound. Realizing his mistake he pulls back on the control stick to turn the ship around only to realize that his steering controls were gone. Unfortunately the same could not be said for the engines which were still going full throttle. Seeing the seabed in front of them he jumps out of his seat and grabs Shina pulling her in behind him just as the submarine impacts the complex, skidding across the ocean floor.

After a moment of silence, save for several alarms Kaito looks back toward the cockpit to see the glass had held other then a few cracks. He sighs in relief and looks at Shina, "Are you ok?" She nods, "A bit of bruising here or there never killed anyone." Suddenly there is static over the C-LNK Sensor, This is Talon 1 calling to the civilian submarine, you are to power down immediately and prepare to be boarded and taken into custody. Any resistance will be met with deadly force. They look above them through the view port to see the two subfighters that were chasing them circling above and a small shuttle moving towards them. Katio sits back in his command chair.

"This is Kaito Shiguni, pilot of the civilian submarine. We will comply, you may proceed with boarding." He says glumly putting the radio down. "Well looks like you'll get your story Shina, just you'll never be able to publish it." Hearing nothing he turns around to see Shina staring out the port viewport. "Shina are you ok?"

She motions him over and he looks through the glass. His eyes widen at what he sees. The ship that the complex houses was directly in front of them, and it was definitely not a Kongo. Kaito had seen the Kongo when it was launched and thought it was the biggest ship he had ever seen, yet the vessel in front of him made the Kongo look like a dingy. Its massive arrowhead bow sat directly in front of the viewport, its torpedo tubes almost looking like teeth along its hull. Behind the bow massive tubes which Kaito could only assume were Ballistic missiles were being installed in the back part of the hull which was opened up and still under construction. The sheer sight of the ship left both of them speechless.

All Shina could do was point to one spot on the bow of the ship. Kaito looked at her finger and followed it his eyes freezing at the hull. "Thats...then this....this ship is."

The two continue to stare out the window at the side of the ship where the illuminated nameplate bore the gold trimmed name DSX Yamato.

Shina sat cross legged in her small cell wearing a navy PT uniform. It had been nearly two weeks since the submarine crash at.... wherever she was and other then an initial interrogation of her and Kaito she hadn't spoken to anyone since other than the guards dropping her off food or new clothes are escorting her to the shower. And they were not a talkative bunch. She lays back down on her bed, the old springs inside it creaking as she does. The sight of the Yamato and the questions surrounding the ship had been the only thing on her mind for the last two weeks, the image of its nameplate burned into her memory. She hadn't seen Kaito either since the interview as the guards had separated the two of them. Even though they had only known each other for this story, she was still worried about the submarine pilot. After all it was thanks to him they crashed next to the complex instead of getting shot up by subfighters.

There is a solid knock at the door and a clang as the lock is released. Shina raises an eyebrow, it wasn't dinnertime yet and she already showered, which mean that this was different. One of the guards walks in, "Ma'am, I need you to follow me." She sighs and stands up, the unfitted shirt shifting as she does so. She walks out into the hallway and is greeted by the dull concrete walls that make up the facility. Every single wall was the same, unmarked and painted a dull grey ad there were only five other doors in that hallway. This time the door across from here was open and Kaito was standing in its doorway in a military uniform with a Lieutenant rank on his shoulder. After breathing a sigh of relief upon seeing him her mind quickly shifted gears as she realized he was a military officer. Before she could snap at him he looked up with a sullen expression on his face and said, "Shina, it’s not what you think."

"Both of you quiet!" One of the guards says snapping, "Follow me." The two walked in silence flanked by four guards as they walked toward to door at the end of the hall. It wasn't Shina's first time doing this as the showers were in the same direction as the hallway split into two beyond the door. A piston hiss is heard as the door opens and the guards walk through and turn right instead of the usual left, bringing Shina and Kaito down the unexplored side of the hallway. At the end of the hall a large metal door with a scanner next to it stands ominously. Shina's mind began to race, they were Japanese citizens so there wasn't much they could do. However, she expected this was a black site and they did violate the law by trespassing, but it wasn't enough to lock them up forever.... was it?

One of the guards places his hand on the scanner and after a beeping noise and a green light the door opens up to reveal and elevator. The guards and their guests step in and another guard presses the 3F button on the wall panel. Looking up at the elevator level indicator above the door Shina sees 4B displayed on the screen. "I'm four floors underground!" She thinks to herself shocked, "What the hell kind of facility is this?!". The elevator shudders as it begins to climb and an eerie silence follows as no one says a word during the elevator's climb. Only the noise of moving machines make Shina bear the silence. With a thud the elevator stops and the doors open to a much different facility.

Unlike the concrete walls of the prison this floor was covered by glass and steel. A massive set of windows lay out in front of them surrounded by metal bracing and supports. The grated floor and the fluorescent lights on the ceiling cast a much-needed glow that Shina had been deprived of for two weeks. The guards begin to move again, heading left with the two in tow. Shina barely noticed as she was enthralled by what lay beyond the window, the Yamato. It was far bigger then she remembered, but it still left her speechless. She noticed that Kaito was looking just as surprised as well, meaning that he had no idea about the ship either even if he was in the military. That was a big 'if'. The guards continue down the passageway for several minutes and whenever a window appeared both Kaito and Shina would gaze out at the monster ship under construction trying to get a better view of it. Finally, they arrived in front of a door with a pair of guards in front of it. Upon reaching the door the four guards who accompanied them spread out.

"Head inside." The guard nearest to Kaito said looking at them. Before they could say anything, there was another hiss and the door opened. The two stepped in only to have the door close behind them. "So, you're our unexpected guests huh?" A voice says inside the room.

The two spins around to see three men behind a desk and a woman standing off to the side. Immediately Kaito comes to attention and salutes and upon examining the uniforms she saw why. The men at the table had captain and admiral’s stars while the women had commander’s stripes. If Shina had thought they were in trouble before, she thought they were dead meat now. The two stand quietly while the man with the Admiral’s stars waves his hand, "At ease Lt., no need for that right now." Surprised both Kaito and Shina look at each other in disbelief. Kaito speaks first, "Sir, respectfully we breached a top-secret military facility and broke the law, why would I need to be relaxed? If you wanted to court martial me you could."

"Ah but Lieutenant Shiguni that is the last thing on my mind-" The Admiral looks at Shina, "-For you at least."

"Great, now I'm on the chopping block" Shina thinks to herself.

Leaning forward from his chair the Admiral starts talking again, "Lieutenant, my name is Rear Admiral Showa, I am the Admiralty’s point of contact for this project. It has come to my attention that those who are in charge at this facility are unsure of what to do with you since you know what we are working on and have a fair amount of knowledge of the project by your testimonies during our initial interviews. Due to this, they have left the choice of what to do with the both of you up to me."

"Showa?" Shina thinks digging through her memory, "He's been in charge of our submarine forces since the late 2000's. Supposed to be a pretty unconventional leader too.” While she is thinking Katio steps forward and comes to attention again, "Sir! I request that I be held responsible for this event as it was my piloting that made us crash at this facility and gain an up-close view of the.... vessel....as such I am requesting that you punish me and let Miss Shina off with supervised community service and house arrest that is also supervised."

Shocked Shina looks at him and whispers, "What are you doing!?" He glances back and whispers, "Saving your ass, mine is already fired."

"I am afraid that simply won't do." Showa says causing both of their hearts to sink, "I cannot let either of you go."

"Sir! She had nothing to do with this it was my piloting-"

"It is your piloting that is the reason you will now be working under my authority."

Kaito stops dumbfounded, "Um, sir? Repeat that again you want to...?"

"I want you to work for me Shiguni." He says plainly, "You can call it getting hired if you want." He presses a button that pulls up video footage of their crash and a set of military files with Kaito’s name on it that are displayed on a monitor on the wall. "Kaito Shiguni, age 26 joined the military at age 18. Completed Navy Officers Training at 21 with high aptitudes for sub-surface combat. In 2017 you entered the Okinawa Subfighter Academy and were part of its first graduating class, placing 3rd in that class might I add."

"You went to OSA!" Shina says interrupting the Admiral, "What the hell were you doing piloting my sub!"

"That would be due to his suspension since he couldn’t get a full-time job anywhere else." The Admiral states plainly getting a sheepish look from Kaito, "I believe that the crime was striking a superior officer following a bar fight, thought the Lieutenant's description was "Striking a Superior Asshole" if I recall correctly." The screen displays a file for a four-month suspension next to a picture of Kaito with a black eye. Kaito looks at Showa still at attention, "Sir, with these files and the additional charges that this event can hold against me I don't see why you are considering me."

"It’s simple, I need good pilots, and you're a damn good one." Showa states, "You managed to get to this base unseen, fool our subfighters, and get within literal feet of our project without being stopped. Your flight record at OSA would have been enough for me to glance at your file but this was enough to get me to come here in person." He leans back in his chair. "Let me put it this way, either you work under me or you will be headed to a maximum-security prison in Osaka. I personally do not want to waste a man of your talent behind bars, but that’s my opinion. The choice is yours."

Katio stands silently for a second and sighs, "Sir, may I ask what this assignment is?"

Showa nods, "It is the acting Combat Air Group Commander for Subcarrier Combat Wing 1."

"I'm afraid I haven't heard of it sir."

"That's because it belongs to her." He says motioning out the window.

Kaito's jaw drops, "You want ME to be the Yamato's CAG?!"

Showa laughs, "Well all my other options are employed at the front for the war, are in training, or just let you sneak into this facility. The job is yours if you want it, your suspension will be revoked and we will have you in the water by tomorrow getting used to your new set of props."

Katio doesn’t hesitate, "Sir, it would be an honor and a privilege to be a part of the Yamato's crew. I accept the offer."

"Good, the men outside will escort you to our new quarters and give you the run down on how things go on around here." Showa says. Katio glances over to Shina who is still quietly standing next to him. Seeing his concern Showa looks at him, "She won't be going to a prison, but we will have something for her."

"If it’s going back to the cell in the basement I would like to avoid that," Shina says stepping in front of Kaito.

Showa smiles, "You news folks can be a pain in my ass, but you have spunk. Taking a sub out to explore an area off-limits to the public based on a hunch and some data you mined off the internet? Talk about following your gut."

"Wait." Shina says, "How do you know about the data mining?"

"We follow any mention of the Abyss and the Arz on internet search engines and elsewhere." Says the woman in the corner.

Showa extends his hand toward her, "Miss Shina this is Commander Keko Misui, head of our technology and information divisions and the Yamato's intelligence officer."

"Intelligence officer?" Shina says a bit surprised, "Why would a ship need an Intelligence Officer?"

"Not your concern." Commander Misui says with a cold tone, "What is your concern is where you will be in the next hour. You have two choices since for now we can't let you leave the base. You can either wait in the cell downstairs until the Yamato launches or you can enlist in the military under the authority of myself and Admiral Showa."

"Me, in the military?" Shina says, her surprise turning into shock, "Why would you want me? Journalists have no value in the military."

"To the contrary, on this ship they do and your schooling in IT will be of use too." Showa says. The monitor switches from Katio's information to Shina's, displaying the dozens of articles and stories she had written and her degrees in journalism and advanced computer science, the experience from which had proved incredibly useful in uncovering difficult stories. She looks at Showa and raises and eyebrow to which he gives a chuckle, "The Yamato is more than just a ship, it’s a story that is part of Japan's culture with the last ship to carry her name and we need someone to tell her story to the public, though not immediately." Showa sighs, "For obvious reasons we cannot reveal the Yamato's existence for now nor can we reveal her inner workings once the ship has launched, but the people will want to know what is going on onboard. We will give you inside access on the ship as part of the crew as well as being our PR. You job as a crew member will be as a Computer Technician Ensign and you will be working under the Commander in Intelligence. She will supervise your work and have you trained in shipboard operations for basic systems."

Shin groans and puts her hands against her temples, "So it’s either military dog for the rest of my life or basement bunks. I don't really think I have a choice here."

Showa nods, "Very well, Ensign Shina Izumi and Commander Kaito Shiguni, you are to report to your new quarters onboard the DSX Yamato by 1800 and report for duty tomorrow at 0700 at the base's muster hall. You will be assigned duties tomorrow and start your training for the operation of this vessel and her CAG. Are there any questions?"

Katio comes to attention and salutes while Shina gives a halfhearted shake of her head, "No Sir."

"Dismissed!" Showa says and the doors behind them open. Two guards escort them out and walk them toward the base's provisions center for new clothing, Showa can her the two of them bickering down the hall before the door closes. Next to him the man with the Captain stars on his uniform lifts an eyebrow, "Was that really our best course of action?"

"I think it was Juzo." Showa says leaning back in his chair again, "That man's talent and that woman's determination got them both standing in this room alive, I think we should give them a chance to prove they're more than just unfortunate souls. I consider myself as a believer in fate, and I am not going to second guess that now. Besides did you really want to lock them in the lower levels for another year?"

Captain Okita shrugs, "No I do not, they are our own citizens, but this course of action is rash even for you. The Yamato is my ship, she should have a crew worthy of sailing her. I am not sure if those two qualify."

"Then make them qualify." Showa says looking at the ceiling, "You are a fine commanding officer, I have no doubt that you will hammer them into fine sailors." He turns and looks out the window behind him at the Yamato sitting in dock. "Besides with this war we may not be able to be picky with who we have should things turn ugly."

A sharp beeping noise echos in the room and a 'Failure' message displays on the computer screen in front of Shina. She groans out of frustration and next to her Commander Misui sighs disappointed, "Ensign, how many times do I have to tell you that the secondary systems need 30 seconds in order to switch over in this scenario, not two."

Exhausted Shina puts her forehead against the screen, "Commander, I have been at this for over three days now. When can I stop?"

"When you pass." Misui says plainly, "If you are going to be a part of this crew you need to be trained like the rest of us. Fire and Flood system controls and emergency protocols are a major part of that. We also have to start you on you Technical Training so you can start your posted job."

In her mind Shina begins to weigh the options between mountains of tests and her old cell on B3. Misui looks at her watch, "Well, time is up anyway. Report back here tomorrow morning at 0630 and we will start again. And please, actually read over the manual I gave you tonight."

"Yes Ma'am" She says mockingly getting a harsh look from the commander. She walks over to the door and opens it to the hallway. Unlike the base, Yamato was full of activity and was far from bland. LED touch screen displays on the walls illuminated the corridors and the walls had a metallic coating. It was like walking into a spacship, one the few perks of her new life in the military. She turned to the left to heard toward her bunk, passing a maintenance crew installing one of the touchscreen monitors. The ship had an integrated communications network with an extensive monitoring system so you could go to any of the wall computers and do anything from locate another crewman to find out what the exact power consumption of that sector was, or so she had been told. Now that she thought about it she hadn't tried it out for herself yet since she had been studying of Misui's exams. She walks over to one of the panels and presses a button, "Computer, locate Commander Kaito"

There was a beep and the computer spoke, "ERROR - Please Specify last name."

"Keep forgetting this is a military boat." Shina says, "Computer Locate Commander Shiguni"

There is another beep, "Commander Shiguni is currently located on the Forward Mess Deck on Deck 3 Frame 43."

"Huh, neat" Shina says, "Computer, what is the current menu for dinner tonight in the Amidship Mess on Deck 6?"

"Fabricated Sushi with a choice of rice or shrimp."

She curls her nose back, "Well great." While fabricated food wasn't the worst, it certainly wasn't the best either. Chef Natsgou said that he was doing his best to make the food taste more realistic but since it was a prototype system he was running into a lot of issues. "May want to skip dinner tonight." Shina says. Her mind jumps from food for a second to her curious side. She looks at the computer again, "Computer, what is the maximum speed of this vessel?"

There is another beep and a pause before the response, "Ensign Izumi does not have the clearance for this information. Please State another inquiry."

She shrugs her shoulders, "Worth a shot." she says as she starts walking down the hall again. She comes to the end of the hallway near the quick-mag system, a mini mag-lev the ship had so that people could get from one end to the other without taking a week, or in Shina's case lost. She presses the button on the door and leans against the wall waiting. After a few second there was a beep and the door hisses opens to the quick mag shuttle. She walks in and says, "Deck 4, Female Quarters." There is a ding and the door closes behind her. There was no one else in the shuttle with her, most of the crew was already in line for dinner, though they were probably going to be disappointed with the meal. After a few second the door beeps again as the shuttle comes to a stop and a voice comes over the intercom, "Port Side Shuttle Stop 4-F" to confirm the stop before the doors open.

Shina walks out and into the female quarters section. There were around 500 females aboard in total from what she had seen and based on her exploration on the number of rooms in the section. The male quarters were on the starboard side and held a little over that number. The only exception to this was the cooking staff, flight crew, pilots, and officer who each had their own rooms or special quarters areas. Since Shina hadn't been down there yet she assumed the ship had over 1,000 people onboard. As she approaches her quarters she brings her hand up to the door and presses her finger against the scanner outside. Upon confirming her identity the door opens and Shina walks in, exhausted from the training.

"I take it training when well today again?" a voice inside says. Shina wearily looks up to see one of her bunkmates, Ensign Eri Kazi, laying down in her bunk.

"Oh hey Eri, I didn't realize you were staying in tonight." Shina says yawning, "And yes, I bombed everything again." She walks over to her own bed and sits down on the lower bunk. "Where are Kari and Su?"

"Su is on the flight deck again, apparently your boyfriend staled out and wrecked his engine and Kari is getting some of that awful food in the mess." Eri says sitting up in her bunk smirking.

"He is NOT my boyfriend." Shina says knowing that Eri is just messing with her, "I am never going to be able to get out of that am I?"

"As the girl who got into the nation's most hidden black site thanks to the brave efforts of a certain commander, absolutely not!"

The two laugh as Shina pulls out a pair of MREs that she had bought from the base's land side store. They had extra supplies of food if the fabricators ever broke down...or if you just didn't feel like vomiting up fabricated food. The two start eating using one of the room's desks as a table. "So," Eri says between bites, "Is Miusi as bad as they say?"

"Worse." Shina says slurping up noodles, "I think she enjoys watching me fail sometimes. She had something on the test for the ship's computer systems about a quantum gel pack, whatever that is." Eri pauses for a second in surprise and continues eating causing Shina to raise an eyebrow and put down her noodles, "What?"

"Huh?" Eri says not looking up.

"You stopped eating, and you never stop eating." Shina says, "Well at least not in the last three days I've known you."

Eri puts down her noodles too, "Well, I was just, you know, surprised. Thats all."

"Surprised at what?"

Eri nervously starts to tap her fingers, "I just didn't realize she was teaching you all that this early-"

"Wait...." Shina says point her finger at Eri, "You know what those are don't you" She says grinning. It may have been easy for Eri to mess with Shina about her and Kaito, but it was even easier to tease Eri about the ship since Shina was still blocked from any basic information and Eri was renowned for not being able to keep a secret. "Well spill the beans! C'mon!"

"I um....I can't really-" Before Eri can answer the door opens and Kari walks in. The Operations Lieutenant clutches her stomach in the open doorway with her face a pale white. The conversation immediately stops as the two begin to laugh.

"Seriously Kari?!" Eri says through the laughter, "You actually ate that crap again! Didn't you learn your lesson last time?"

"Its...supposed to be healthy though." Kari says as she slowly makes her way to her bed and collapses on it. The laughter coninues for a few more seconds before Kari's snoring soon replaces it.

"That was fast. I know she has the day shift in ops but I didn't think she would wipe out that fast." Shina says.

"This is just how she is." Eri says shrugging, "Regardless, you need to study for tomorrow or the Commander is going to put you on maintenance for a week."

"And we need to finish that conversation we were having before we go to work tomorrow." Shina says grinning as she grabs her tablet and pulls up the 'Fire Safety' section.

Eri moans, "Me and my big mouth." Shina smiles as she reads. She may have been forced into this position, but at least the company she had wasn't too bad. She wondered if Kaito could say the same.

"You TOTALED my engine!" Chief Zuie yells, "What the HELL is your problem!"

"Well sir," Kaito starts, "There was this squid-"

The chief puts up his hands, "Nope. Stop. I do not want to hear it." Kaito shrugs innocently to which the Chief sighs, "Commander, you are going to be the death of me, you know that. You've been here three days and I have a busted landing gear, a snapped rudder, and now a burned out engine just from your sub alone. If you don't start treating these ships right I'm gonna cut your buoyancy control so you just shoot up to the surface."

Kaito sheepishly nods, "Understood sir." The chief, still fuming, storms off to go fix the broken ship. Off to the side Kaito's wingman, Lieutenant Haik Shozura rolls his eyes, "Commander you may get killed by the chief before we launch at this rate."

Kaito sighs and walks over to Haik, "Tell me something I don't know."

"How about that three of our pilots are out on sick leave."

"Fabricator?"

"Fabricator" Haik says shaking his head.

The two walk across the massive hanger deck. Unlike the other hangers on ships like the Zuikaku or Kongo the Yamato was built with a larger open hanger deck similar to most carrier except with a lot more pillars and support structures. The extra space meant more craft and an easier repair for the mechanics who needed room to lift up the subfighters to commence repairs on hard to access points. Kaito opens the door on the aft part of the hanger where the pilot muster hall was located. As he walks in he sees that all three wings that have been assigned to the Yamato were present, save for the three in sick bay. As he walks in a few start to murmur and Kaito understands why. A brand new CAG just because the brass said so was never a good way to get promoted and Kaito knew that it was the equivalent to painting a target on his back.

He walks over to the podium displaying the ships logo, a large anchor with the ship's arrowhead bow silhouette over top of it, and taps the mic causing the murmurs to die down. "OK, looks like were all here. Unfortunately we have three absent from the incredible food we have in the mess." There are a few chuckles from that as well as some groans of agreement, "-So Hammerhead you guys are gonna be flying light today. Manta and Zero you guys take up the slack, can't have another replacement CAG flying in under my our noses to take my job, thought that would make the chief happy." Someone in the back row stands up, "C'mon Commander, leave some of the Chief's headaches for the res of us!" Which gets a round of laughter.

Smirking Kaito continues, "Trust me Whiplash, I would like nothing better. Now as for schedules, as I said Manta and Hammerhead you guys have the first shift, followed by the Zeros and Tigers. Saber squad you guys are on idle today for repairs. Also you guys in the scouting squad, please stop leaving you comms on none of us want to hear about the shit between you and your Tinder Dates, especially me dealing with explaining that to comms and the cap'." A few faces in the scouting squad turn red while the rest of the room starts booing jokingly. "Hey, hey, hey, settle down you guys." Kaito says bring the room back to attention, "Last thing, Captain says we may be getting a few new toys to play with soon, no they are not the MF-9's. I want them as much as you guys but they are still a ways off. Cap' just said that we would be getting new equipment in the next week or so. Expect to be flying heavy with some adjustments to your sticks. Otherwise swim safe guys."

The room stands and salutes to which Katio salutes back to. After a few minutes of socializing the room clear out leaving Kaito and Haik. The Micronesian sighs,"So they really aren't the MF-9's?"

Kaito rolls his eyes, "Oh please, you would wreck one faster then I would!"

"Have to keep the title of the wrecking ball of the wing." Haik says shrugging, "Though you are giving me a run for my money."

Kaito smirks, "In a betting mood are you?"

"When am I not?" Haik says back, "Poker in the mess?"

"You're on"

Orostan - 1971

At first they came in small numbers to the village. A three team lead by a woman who didn’t really like to speak surveyed the land. Next month maybe a man taking notes, on what the indigenous villagers couldn’t guess. Perhaps a few months after that maybe someone who just looked around the village. The 357 (360 of you count a fetus as a person) villages didn’t know what these people were doing, and didn’t really care too much. They were separate from the world, right between the savanna and the mountains. Although many of them didn’t know it, behind the mountains something they’d never seen before was happening.

One morning, when the sun only cast a red color across part of the sky before it rose, the villagers saw that thing they’d never seen before. Four teams of workers were working on laying down sections of metal beams attached to oddly shaped stone bricks in the loose earth over gravel left there by a metal beast in front of them. Railroad ties, and rails over them. In front of the teams were six things that the villagers would describe to their friends as metal horses holding barrels in between their short legs, following men with pickaxes and shovels. The shoveling and picking men would turn the rolling greenish hills in front of them into a kind of uneven ground only holding the same average elevation, cutting through the hills and drawing a dirt colored streak across the idyllic landscape. The rolling things would turn that into flat and hard ground, where even the less than fertile soil of this area was somehow made even less fertile. Then came the gravel machines, and the other machines carrying those odd bits of metal and stone, which were laid down one in front of the other, with four rows advancing across the landscape. Sometimes a bent bit of beam and stone would be built, connecting the rows to each other. They looked a little like roads, some of the villagers thought.

And so it went. The villagers would mill around, watching the work. The workers would sometimes smile and wave to them. Those people seemed alright, most of them thought. But the destruction of the hills was worrying. Sometimes large machines pulling odd wagons along the rails would come, delivering tools and food. Every night one would take the workers away, and the villagers would watch it retreat backwards under the mountains through a large hole in the side of a hill. But after a while, it became clear that as the machines progressed and the workers kept working, they would go right through the village. Would they flatten the village? What right did they have to do that? When the operation finally reached the small stone house that was farthest away from the center of the village, work stopped. A man came foreword to examine the house and look inside, and then stepped aside to let a machine pass. Nobody was inside at the time, so the machine drove through the house, the flat plow at its front pushing it aside like it was nothing, and the treads it was on crushing whatever remained of the house. This made quite a lot of noise, and distracted everyone from whatever they were doing.

The villagers knew that the house hadn’t been inhabited for the last ten years, and wondered if that was why it was destroyed. But even though the inhabited sections of the village were perhaps less than a kilometer ahead, the machines kept going. So the decision was made to confront them. Six villagers stood in front of the plow. They could tell that the man in a cab at the top of the thing was rather confused. In fact, work had completely stopped as the villagers blocked their progress. It seemed going over humans was where they drew the line. In their native language, they asked loudly what was going on to whoever would listen. The workers spoke amongst themselves in their own incomprehensible language, until an important looking one came foreword. So they asked him what was what, and he answered in their own language, butchering the words he spoke with a thick accent they couldn’t identify.

“We... are building a railway. Please move.”

What was a railway? And why were they building it? The chief of the village, an old man with a limp and a curly grayish white beard, would be the one to ask the questions.

“You have come to this land, and have destroyed the trees and grass and left your things behind you. What right do you have to destroy our homes as well for this railway?”

The important one sighed and spoke. He sounded more confident now.

“This is our country. We’ve got every right in the world, and you’ve got to move.”

The villagers were a bit confused at this. The country didn’t belong to the strangers who just showed up a few months ago, or anyone really. How did you even go about owning a country? The chief, with a scowl on his face, voiced the opinions of most of the villagers.

“You do not care that these are our homes? My father lived here, as did his father, and his father’s father.“

The important one sighed.

“Suit yourself.”

Three days later the soldiers and tanks would come.
“It is difficult for me to imagine what “personal liberty” is enjoyed by an unemployed hungry person. True freedom can only be where there is no exploitation and oppression of one person by another; where there is not unemployment, and where a person is not living in fear of losing his job, his home and his bread. Only in such a society personal and any other freedom can exist for real and not on paper.” -J. V. STALIN

Date: January 2020, the hour before the NCRPII vote passed.

Marcel Dutoit, President of the Sixth Republic and the French Confederation, stood in front of a mirror, reciting his speech as he waited to be taken through to the Parliamentary debating chamber. The entire government was to be present for his announcement, and he knew that the media were assembling nearby to broadcast his words across the Sixth Republic and her dominions. It would be the defining moment of his Presidency. The moment that he would likely be remembered for.

"Is Dupont on the plane yet?" he asked an adviser.

"He's just made the final vote tally of NCRPII public, sir. He'll be leaving Iceland in a matter of hours."

"Good, his involvement is crucial, although I hope that this Nigerian disaster won't have tainted him as it has me." Dutoit frowned at himself in the mirror as he thought of something else. "I hope there aren't any complications?"

"No sir, none that we know of. All is going as planned, although there are other issues of importance that need addressing. You'll still need to speak with the Defense Ministry about the subfighter order once we are done here."

"Of course. These recent deals with Orbanis have been a literal gold mine for us, you know. At least the Nigerian War will not leave our country bankrupt, even after the subfighters are taken into account as well as settling our bond deal with the North Americans."

Dutoit spent another few moments in silence, making sure that he was prepared to face both his political rivals, and the war-weary public. How will this day be remembered? Hopefully, he thought, they will see I have made the right decisions. That I've been left with no feasible alternatives.

"It is time to go through now, President Dutoit, are you ready?"

He nodded in affirmative, and walked out to face his reckoning.

Stones defends his "Islamist disease" statement -Independent

Postby The Underground Movement Union » Fri Aug 03, 2018 4:08 am

February of 2018, North American Union

Recently, President Stones had made the following statement:

"The ICN isn't going to stop murdering innocents just because we ask them to, and I highly doubt that the Islamist disease is going to stop at plaguing Nigeria. It is therefore up to strong nations and strong leaders to crush them."

Following this statement, a Zackarothian Cleric named Abdur Razzaaq al-Salehi haad replied in an interview making this statement,

"Ever since the extermination of Wahhabism and the secularization of the Arabian and Persian peninsulas, Islamic terrorism has been at the lowest it has ever been. The ICN is merely a byproduct of the refuse and rejected ideals that where forced out. That's why I believe the Orostani attacks against Mecca and the statements by the Canadian President Stones, are dangerous. Interfaith relations are generally stable but acts and statements like this break down that wall. Calling for the destruction of Mecca or calling Islam a disease is not helpful and damaging. The ICN nor Zackaroth are the entire Muslim world. Muslims live in all countries and all over the globe."

Of course, this wasn't the end of the incident. In a recent interview with Stones by Ontario Times, Stones was asked for his thoughts regarding the Cleric's claim and the outrage that the Zackarothians expressed. To this, he had to say;

"I genuinely do not know where they got the idea that my statement was anywhere near Islamophobic when I had made the statement that Islamism, not Islam, Islamism; fundamentalist, militant Islam, politicized fundamentalist Islam, is a disease that must be wiped from the Earth, much like Wahabbism was from the Middle East." He'd then say in a somewhat joking/sarcastic tone, "Unless he's now implying that modern-day Zackaroth are fundamentalist, militant muslims, which I know they're not, take my word for it I've met some Zackarothians, my statement was neither outrageous nor was it Islamophobic." He'd continue on, talking in a calm and straightforward tone, "My claim was that, like the Zackarothians did to the Wahabbists, we should do to the militant, Islamic Fundamentalists. Of course, I'm not going to say "militant Islamic fundamentalists" every single time I have to discuss groups like the ICN, so I'm going to continue to coin the term 'Islamist" to differ them from "Islam" to support the idea that not all Muslims, especially moderate muslims like the ones we see in the Middle East, are like the ones in Nigeria. At the same time, I can understand how he could have gotten them confused, given they both sound similar and "Islamism" isn't a term commonly used anymore, and some of the more, traditional Muslim scholars don't exactly appreciate the term for some reason, which is something I genuinely don't understand considering it, again, helps differentiate the moderates from the radicals, but their opinions not mine. Either way, I hope this clears any confusion and defuses that situation as a whole, and if he'd like to further discuss this I'd love to invite him to my house one day to have some tea and biscuits and to meet my family, assuming I ever get the time."

Athens, February 5th 2020, during the Winter Masquerade

A touch.

A single touch.

It is really intriguing, and yet also so simple for a single touch to change one’s emotions completely. It is the gateway from confidence to shyness, but equally, from melancholy to euphoria. A single touch can both break thousands of old norms, and establish thousands of new ones. It can break down complex networks of human interactions, and create the greatest of bonds. The power of a single touch, is basically the starting point of the ‘human game’, the game we are forced to play, a game which developed a sick love-hate relationship with its players. This may be the most disgustingly elegant thing ever created by the human kind.

And now, he was feeling the immense gravity of the said touch. A touch of a girl, a desired girl. Indeed, the love experienced by the youth is tremendously passionate, so much so that it burns through all romantic comedy series. Yet, it lacks balance and sophistication; because of a very simple yet dark reason: it is a love of passion, but not of compassion. The youth loves, not for the sake of love, but just for the fantasy of being loved, being accepted, having someone to belong to. The love of youth is an emotional economy of symbiotic interactions.

But, these weren’t the thoughts in his head, no, for he was thinking only of the girl in front of him, the girl which was holding his hand. A sweet smile, the most bitter of masks, much befitting to this masquerade, aye? Oh yes! He was in a masquerade! The emotional shock of that touch faded away, and he started to recall his memories. This girl was his crush, and she had accepted being his date for the Winter Masquerade, and she held his hand so that they wouldn’t be separated and lost in the crowd. Her cyan dress was fitting her perfectly, her brown hair was smelling of orchid, and her eyes were burning with amazement, and her mask was making her look like a French duchess. What a mesmerising sight.

An announcement. For the upcoming waltz. Wait, what? Waltz? Oh dear. Make no mistake, he knows his way around dancing, and waltz was simple enough. The problem? He was nervous. It was the first time he was to dance with a girl whom he had a crush on. One misstep can lead to failure, so everything must be perfect. So, despite the challenges, he formally invited her to dance a waltz with him. With giggles and a witty look, she accepted.

The music started. Shostakovich? A classic! They initiated the dance, one-two-three, one-two-three... Preety good. Every step was being calculated, not by mathematics, but by instincts, and amazingly, with utter perfection. This feeling of success filled him with courage, and he dared to make a move. A very bold move. He took up his hand, and touched her cheek. Queen to h5.

A shocked but pleased face, and she closed her eyes. Knight to e4. He slowly closed in. Bishop to a6. She slowly moved her hand from his back to his face. Pawn to f3. He made a sharp turn, making her lose a bit of her balance. Rook to b8. She accepted the protection of his arms. Rook to b8, the black rook takes the white rook, the game heats up. He closed in even more. Queen to e8. She didn’t resist. Pawn to f4. He slowly but gently touches her lips with his. Queen to b8, the white queen takes the white rook, check. She returns the kiss. King to g7. He goes on a full French kiss. Queen to b7, checkmate.

And the young couple continued to kiss during the waltz, so passionately, devoruingly, savagely. Just like the love they experienced, primitive and brutish, with no sign of refinement. He sighed. Albeit he considered the youth love to be way too intense and and unstable, he was still amazed by its enormous and unsatiable desire. Desire. The maker and unmaker of all things. He sighed again, for he was now 57 years old, a man without the burning desires and dreams of youth. Perhaps, this was his biggest lost.

The bitterest yet the cleverest of ironies put him in a sweet melancholy again. During his youth, he had been determined, determined to make this world a better place, to improve himself, and improve others. Progress was the highest ideal, and skies were only temporary limits. He only needed one thing: power. Power to create and destroy. Only then, his dreams would be accomplished. Now, the attrition of life had bulldozed him for 37 years at least. But during these years, while he lost his desires, he gained sight. The necessary sight to play the game of power. Now, he was arguably the most powerful individual of these lands, and his word was near equal to law. Yet, he didn’t know what to do with this power. His desires, his will to power, the path to the superman, were all gone. No purpose, only ability, a true sandbox game. Isn't this, in a way, the life itself?

“Hey! Fleuchaim! Come here and drink! Take a break from thinking for once!”. Yes. Fleuchaim. Jean-Martin Fleuchaim. The Chancellor of the Fregantes Empire. Surely you have heard of him once. And, taking a break from thinking? Why would he? Thinking wasn’t a job, it was a way of life, a modus vivendi. “I am fine, and a bit tired. Go on without me”. He didn’t have quite the energy. That’s why he was secretly watching the romantic play of the young couple, he was hoping to steal some of their energy, or wake up some of his old energy. No success so far.

Why the passion of youth abandons, and the inner child dies when one ages? Can’t they put up a fight against the reaper that is the life itself? They can. He knew that. They retreat to the innermost parts of the mind, and wait there, taking shelter, and only show themselves before something genuine. One problem though: this was a world of replicas, and a masquerade was even worse.

He left the bar, and started to walk. He was wearing a suit, but not an expensive one. He was wearing a melon hat, and put on his glasses. He was very different from his public appearance, so much so that nobody recognised him. Just as intended. He made his way towards the main square.

The marriage was already over, and the royal guests were escorted to the Imperial resort for a party with the senior members of the government. “Let’s hope that Martin likes the banquet, and the other things we have prepared. We have made special attention to the most tiny details, after all”, he thought. Yes, he wasn’t in the party which he himself organised. He wasn’t the party guy. He preferred walking and contemplating.

As he was touring the square, he felt something. A feeling long lost, yet very familiar. The feeling of a touch. A single touch.

***************

Nobody is immune to the feeling of a single touch. Age has nothing to do with it, nor gender, nor race, nor upbringing. As beings craving for stimuli, humans have a weakness towards these touches, a vulnerability. These are not mere physical contacts, each of them have its special meaning.

“Hey”

A familiar voice, a dear voice. He turned to see a woman, around his own age. She was wearing a simple dress, with a coat. Her hair was tied up, and quite unexpectedly, she was wearing her slippers. He immediately recognised her. She wasn’t supposed to be here, and she wasn’t supposed to be dressed in such an unorthodox way! But, life doesn’t progress as it supposed to. Before him was an old friend, and old desired, a comrade. Before him, was the Empress of the Fregantes Empire and her Senate, in slippers. Quite the scene.

-“What brings you here? Weren’t you supposed to be with the royal couple?”

-“I was, but they wanted privacy, and since there was nothing important to do, I simply got rid of the formal clothes, put on something simple and comfortable, and just went out. I never imagined I would see you here. I thought that you would be in your apartment, in your pajamas. In fact, I was thinking about heading over to your place.”

-“Oh, well, here I am. Interested in sitting down and talking a little bit?”

-“Sure”

Talked, they did. Not of politics, not of bureaucracy but of life and its funny games. He talked about the young couple he observed. “They were very passionate, and the boy was dancing with excellence. A burning birth of a relationship. Unfortunately, although the desire of the youth is intense, it is a fire that burns out too quickly, even for the couple to realize it. What follows is emptiness and mutual harm, all done in order to lit up the fire again. Once they understand it is time to let go, it is too late, for the damage is already done. And then, they claim to have made lessons out of it, to be more mature. That is a lie, because it is nothing more than children hurting themselves, and faintly promising to never doing it again. A promise destined to be forgotten, always”.

She didn’t respond, she only sighed, and put on a smile. But this wasn’t a pleasant smile, this was a genuine smile, a smile of pain and understanding, but also of compassion.

An announcement, for another waltz. They laughed. This was too much to be pure coincidence. But it was. He invited her to dance, an invitation she eagerly accepted.

They started to dance. Unlike the dance he watched, this dance wasn’t one of perfection and calculations. It was just out of fun, and a cordial gesture of mutual care. There were no tactics, and why would there be? This was dance, not chess. It was a matter of pleasure and understanding, not of conquest. One must be comfortable, and must not care about the surroundings during these few minutes.

Comfort and relaxation. An untold but mutually understood openness, a profound serenity. Finally, something genuine. The child slowly crawled from its shelter, the fire once again lit up, much to the delight of the Vestia Virgins. But these desires and passions of youth, these fountains of need, weren’t primitive in this case. They were refined, balanced and sophisticated. This was not conquest, but creation. The creation of a momentary world of inner peace and satisfaction.

The waltz ended. And the two looked exhausted, but happy. People really need to take a break from life in occasions like these, and this was a good enough example.

-“So, would you be interested in spending the rest of the night with reading?”

-“So you are inviting me over to your place?”

-“For intellectual purposes”

-“Fine by me”

And so they went, unrecognised, as two friends, as a genuine being, inside the masquerade.

There had been tense times in Japan's recent history as events from the closing of the Suez Canal to the Nigerian War, however, the tension across the nation could be felt in the air itself. For the first time since 1945 Japan had once again fallen under the Imperial Banner and the flag of the Rising Sun once again flew high above the Palace. No one was more concerned about this change then the man who was standing in the Royal gardens of the Palace, Emperor Akihito. The older man watches the koi in the ponds below him, observing them gliding below the waters surface. Akihito sighed. He had always considered bringing back the throne at some point but he expected it to be when his son had succeeded him. Now with the military coup he was now in command of a Japan that was not so different the that of his father.

The though of his father, Emperor Hirohito, caused a bit of sadness to fill him. While Hirohito had led the empire to the peak of its power in 1941 he had caused its end just a few short years later and had been forced to kneel to a foreign power. It had always been a sore point for him, but Hirohito had paved the way for this modern Japan that Akihito now led. As Akihito continued to watch the koi and his mind dwelled on the past an aid walked up to him. His trance broke, Akihito looks at the aid who bows to him. "My lord." He says, "The Military Council has convened and are waiting for you in the Throne Room." Akihito nods and begins to walk inside.

The Throne Room had always been a symbol of Japan, even during its era of democracy. The 3,000 year old dynasty of the Chrysanthemum Throne had not always lived in this palace as the family had once been located in Kyoto before the capital was moved. Regardless, Akihito felt the full weight of his role as he walked into the throne room which was flanked by his six military advisors, the Military Council. These men had been instrumental in achieving the overthrow of the old government and restoring the Imperial Line to power. Akihito just hoped their ambitions did not go beyond that like it had with his father. After walking past his guard and the Council, Akihito sits on the throne.

The Council steps forward after he sits. The first to speak is an Army General named Haito, "Your Majesty, you called us?"

Akihito nods, "With the new change in the government I want to be informed about the current plans the military has to expand our fleets, protect our borders, and ensure the protection of our people."

Haito nods, "Of course sir, the Army and Air Force will be consolidating their forces while upgrading out current hardware. The Army will be focusing on building a larger assault based force with a larger marine detachment for island hopping operations. Our estimates is this transition should take a year and a half at a cost of 125 Billion Yen. We hope to be able to take to the offensive after that."

Akihito raises his brow, "The offensive?"

"Yes sir." Haito says continuing, "We are once again the empire and we had claims to Korea, Manchuria-"

Akihito holds up his hand, "General, when did I say we were going to invade these nations?"

Haito looks surprised, "My lord, you did not but I assumed-"

"You assumed incorrectly." Akihito says interrupting him. "Every time Japan has intervened in affairs beyond our borders we are beaten back. In the early years of the Empire we were pushed out of China and Korea, then by the Mongols, then we were held a gunpoint by the US. While my successor did gain much he also lost everything. I will not follow in his footsteps and see this nation brought to the brink once more. I will make myself clear: there will be no military invasions without my explicit approval."

The Military Council all looks at each other and hesitantly nodded. Akihito had foreseen this sort of event occurring and wanted to head it off before he lost control of the situation. Thankfully he had seemed to hold control for now. Another one of the Council, the head of research named Shinza, "Sir, if I may. I would like to report on the development of our projects."

Akihito nods, happy to talk about anything else. Shinza smiles and takes out a tablet from his suitcase on the floor., "Well My Lord, our increase in funds has accelerated many programs that were lagging behind. The electric based infantry weapons are in prototype phase and will likely enter service in another year or so. The MF-9 Shinden is progressing nicely and should be in service by 2022, its propulsion system is still causing us issues."

"Thats the Sabre Engine correct?" Akihito asks.

"Correct." Shinza says, "The Sabre is giving us far more problems then the Koi Engine which is for our larger vessels."

"And when will that enter the service?" Akihito asks.

"Soon." Shinza says, "The Yamato Project will be the first to utilize it as soon as the issue we are having with the power plant is worked out. Other then that our Phase 2 Submarines should start entering production soon and the older models will undergo a refit. The Aquagun Mk II will be installed and the improved Katana II Torpedo will be entering service shortly." He puts the pad down, "Other then that there is nothing else major to report on."

Akihito nods, "Thank you. As for the last matter of this meeting, Admiral Showa what is your plan to expand the navy and enforce the Neutral Zone?"

Admiral Showa walks forward, "Sir, I intend to increase production of ships across the board both surface and subsurface. I am also going to expand our small submarine fleet and our subfighter force. The projected fleet would have over 700 subfighters and 300 warships to monitor our waters. Lastly I want to get a new project approved, Project Shogun."

"Shogun?" Akihito says repeating the name, "I am not familiar with it."

"Thats because I just made it yesterday." Showa says, "The plan calls for a series of underwater forts and defenses to be spread around the borders and key regions of the Empire. Since these defense will be underwater they will be difficult to locate and attack. Construction is also hidden from view and the entire project can be built without the world knowing, much like the Abyss and the Pacific Shield. While it would be costly and require maintenance it would prevent an event like that of the Pacific War where the US would enter our waters unopposed if our fleets were diverted."

Akihito nods, "Very well, I want a few small strucutres built to determine their effectivness first before I devote a large portion of the budget to this. Are the any objections?" No one says anything, "The start this project immediatly. I am afraid I must leave now, I have other matters to attend to." The six advisors bow as Akihito stands and remain bowing until he exits the room. Akihito takes his phone from his pocket and dials it while walking toward the Koi ponds once more. After a few moments of ringing there is a a voice on the other line, "Hello?"

"Naruhito I have something for you to do....."
