MOSCOW, RED SQUARE, USSR, JAN 22, 1939

Josef Stalin walks up the flight of stairs that leads to the podium which is on a section of the Kremlin wall overlooking the Lenin Mausoleum and the rest of the Square, Millions of Muscovites have come to see the 34th anniversary of the January Revolution. As Stalin and some delegates from Socialist Mongolia stand on the wall. Stalin starts with his speech to the Soviet public, as well as the soldiers ready to March in the square. he looks out at the square and begins: "Dear Comrades, On the occasion of the twenty second anniversary of the Great January Socialist Revolution, I myself and the other members of the Mongolian delegation, representing the National People's Congress and the State Council of the People's Republic of Mongolia, the Central Committee of the Mongolian Communist Party, and all the People and Communist Party members of Mongolia, have the honor to offer warm fraternal congratulations to the people, government and Communist Party of the great Soviet Union, and to all the comrades and friends present here. As our revolutionary teacher Lenin pointed out time and again, the great revolution carried out by the Soviet people forty years ago initiated a new epoch in world history. Historically there have been revolutions of many kinds, but none to compare with the October Socialist Revolution. For thousands of years the working people of the world and all progressive humanity have dreamed of building a society in which there would be no exploitation of man by man, This dream was realized on one-sixth of the earth's land surface for the first time in history by the October Revolution. This revolution proves that, without the landlords and the bourgeoisie, the people are completely capable of building a free and happy new life in a planned way. It also proves that different nations of the world are completely capable of living together amicably once there is no imperialist oppression. In the past forty years the Soviet people have traveled a hard road. The imperialists tried by every means to destroy the world's first socialist republic. The enemies of the Soviet Union appeared for a time to be stronger than the Soviet Union and twice launched armed attacks against it. But the courageous Soviet people, led by their glorious Communist Party, thoroughly smashed the attacks of the aggressors.
The Soviet Union has been invincible because it is a country in which the socialist system has replaced the capitalist system and the dictatorship of the proletariat has replaced the dictatorship of the exploiting classes ¾ a country which develops its social productive forces at a speed of which the capitalist countries are incapable ¾ and a country which truly practices proletarian internationalism, genuinely opposes national oppression and helps oppressed nations to emancipate themselves. The whole world acknowledges that the success of the Soviet Union in recent years on two occasions has opened up a new era in the conquest of socialism. Not only the Soviet people, but also the world proletariat and all mankind can take pride in all this. Only a few reactionaries are unhappy about it. The creative application of Marxism-Leninism by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in tackling practical tasks has ensured unbroken success in the Soviet people's construction work. The fighting programme for communist construction in the Soviet Union put forward by the Twentieth Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union is a good example. The wise measures taken by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union on the questions of overcoming the cult of the individual, developing agriculture, reorganizing the administration of industry and construction, extending the power of the union republics and local organizations, opposing the anti-party group, consolidating unity within the Party and improving the Party and political work in the Soviet army and navy, will undoubtedly promote still further the consolidation and development of all undertakings in the Soviet Union.
Throughout the world the people have begun to see their own future ever more clearly in the successes gained by the Soviet people. Essentially, the path of the Soviet Union. the path of the October Revolution, is the bright common way for the progress of all mankind. The masses of the people throughout the world celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the October Revolution warmly, because the history of the past forty years has convinced them that the proletariat is certain to defeat the bourgeoisie, socialism is certain to defeat capitalism, and the oppressed nations are certain to defeat the imperialists, Of course, difficulties, twists and turns still face the people. But it was well said by Lenin thirty-six years ago: "The important thing is that the ice has been broken, The broken, the road is open and the path has been blazed. "(Enthusiastic applause.)
The people’s revolution led by the Mongolian Communist Party has always been a part of the world socialist revolution of the proletariat initiated by the October Revolution. The Mongolian revolution has its own national characteristics and it is entirely necessary to take these into consideration. But in our own revolution and socialist construction we have made full use of the rich experience of the Communist Party and the people of the Soviet Union. The Mongolian people are fortunate in having the experience of the October Revolution and of the socialist construction in the Soviet Union, which enables them to make fewer mistakes, to avoid many other and to pursue their cause fairly smoothly, although they still face many difficulties. It is clear that, after the October Revolution, if a proletarian revolutionary of any country should overlook or not seriously study the experience of the Russian revolution, of the proletarian dictatorship and of socialist construction of the Soviet Union, and should fail to use these experiences analytically and in a creative way in the light of the specific conditions in his own country, he would not be able to master Leninism, which represents new stage in the development of Marxism, and he would not be able to solve the problems of revolution and construction in his own country correctly. He would either commit doctrinaire or revisionist mistakes. We must oppose both these deviations simultaneously, but at present, to oppose revisionist deviation is a particularly urgent task.
It is equally clear that, since the October Revolution, any government that refuses to be on friendly terms with the Soviet Union only harms the real interests of its own people. Dear comrades, the fact that representatives of the working class and masses of the people of various countries of the world are here today to attend this grand meeting of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, held to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the October Revolution demonstrates in itself the great solidarity of the people's forces of the world and symbolizes the flourishing condition of the international socialist movement. Let us continue our efforts to strengthen the solidarity of the socialist countries, and of the working people and oppressed nations of the world, in order to attain new and greater victories. (Prolonged, enthusiastic applause.)
Long live the great October Socialist Revolution! Long live the solidarity and friendship of the socialist countries headed by the Soviet Union! Long live the great banner of Marxist-Leninist internationalism! The proletariat and peace-loving people of the whole world, unite!" The square erupts in enthusiastic applause, and the Red Army Band starts playing it's music as the Red Army marches down the square. As soon as the 60th Byelorussian Division has reached the gates of the Kremlin, the Tanks roll out and move on. Then as the Armored vehicles finish, Red Army Airforce aircraft fly overhead. this parade in 1939 shows the world the might of the Mighty Soviet Union.

Lisbon, Commerce Plaza, Portugal, JAN 23, 1939

Oliveira Salazar would be smoking in his office just overlooking the beautiful ports of Portugal's riviera and the bustling 'Commerce Plaza'. The winds would be gusty outside the small balcony that would lead to the massive crowd awaiting for Salazar to make his wonderful speech on the victory of defeating the monarchist forces and successfully driving them into Spain days earlier. Salazar would cough and speak in a deep, gravely voice to his secretary of war Aristides Mendes, "Is the perimeter being monitored by the anti-monarchist guards?" Mendes would respond hesitantly "Yes, general. I've made sure the monarchist resistance won't be in the 'Commerce Plaza' during your speech. All your hard work won't go to waste sir." Salazar would draw on his cigar and puff out a giant cloud of smoke into the already cloudy office. He'd stand up and take out his silver, flask filled with brand whiskey and stop just before exiting onto the balcony. "Mendes, I got a letter from my secretary about the speech Josef Stalin made yesterday. Why wasn't I informed of this?" Mendes would back up towards the door tripping on the ornate rug covering the rustic floor of the office. "Well sir...I mean general! We didn't think you'd need the Communists to be on your mind during your big speech. Whom would? Those bloody communists deserve to fall apart at the seams!" Mendes would spit onto the floor to show an example of the Communist party and then would rub it into the floor with his shoe. "I see. Well I want my reporters in the U.S.S.R to gain all the information they can from the government. Also I want a copy of Stalin's speech on my desk this evening. I wish to peruse it." Salazar would say looking back at the cowering, fearful figure of the Secretary Of War. "Yes.....yes sir.." Mendes would slip out of the office and hurry back to his bland excuse for an office. Salazar would think of replacing Mendes for a brief second but that though would fall to the deepest recces-es of his mind. After all he had a speech to give. Salazar would step out onto the balcony and would wave to his loyal Portuguese citizenry. *Loud cheering and applause* He'd set his hand on the podium that was moved from storage and would adjust the microphone. *Silence befalls the crowd*

(Salazar's speech for authenticity and some historic value).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_Mzcf0Ef6Y

Salazar would end the speech as greatly as he had started it and would watch the parade forces walk the 'Commerce Plaza' displaying Portugal's strength and pride. He'd think to himself that Portugal would be the strongest of the European nations to come and may even prove the Soviet Union to be weaker than the smaller country of Portugal! He'd smile as he saw the parading forces wave their flags and ride their stallions. He'd shake hands with the other people on the balcony with him and would step inside to get refreshment and cool down from the reverberating speech. His secretary of war Mendes would be in the grand, open spaced lobby of the government building talking to some other Portuguese politicians and members of the revolution. He'd stop to chat with them about what to do with the Soviet Union and Josef Stalin's speech before heading off to see some others cooling off inside the lobby.

Kure Naval shipyards

"Next!" The inspection officer called out, workers in line entering the covered section of Kure as they carried credentials in hand. Walking in line, the sun slowly began to rise along the horizon, the clear outlines of various ships including battleships and cruisers. Arriving in a staff car, the current commander in chief of naval forces Isoroku Yamamoto arrives on the site, surrounded by soldiers and sailors as escort as the staff begins their unannounced tour of the site, more particularly the covered section of Kure.

The Japanese empire had been more than successful recently. With the end of the Sino-Japanese war and a treaty officially solidifying their holdings, for now they could rest easy as they re-consolidated their forces and pulled combat divisions back to the homeland in preparation. Now, they could finally focus on their plans towards the West, but more so of 'Nanshin' and 'Hokushin' Ron. The former calling for the south to fall under Japan while the latter wanted the North under the imperial flag. The war with China had proved to work in favor of the army, now that they had war hardened veteran divisions and air units.

"Admiral, right now Akagi and Kaga are at Truk anchorage and are currently undergoing drills right off the coast, their air groups are likewise undergoing training. So far we only have 4 carriers ready, some keels have been laid down but these are our operational units." As an officer moved the pieces around, Yamamoto merely sat in silence, watching the pieces move, showing the carriers and their activities. "And that covers most of our movements." So far, based on the pieces most battleships were anchored at home port, half of their carriers at Truk while in Korea and China few ships remained as most returned to the mainland. Looking at the map, he simply nodded and left the room, continuing his inspection of the site.

JANUARY 25, 1939. END OF THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR. OFFICIAL NEWSREEL
Image
Hastily erected barriers in Madrid were crushed under German, Italian, and Spanish tanks today as the capital of the Republican side was captured. The flag of the Nationalists flies over Spain while Republican forces have capitulated in the rest of Spain. The Spanish Civil War is finally over. In a speech today, Francisco Franco praised the Nationalist forces for being the leading force in a brutal time against the 'corruption of the Second Republic' and the 'driving force against anarchism and communism'.

While the issue of Asterguard secession from the Spanish mainland in 1934 has not been addressed, it is predicted that Franco will soon give an ultimatum to Asterguard. However, this is not assured, as Franco, and Spain in general, are still recovering from the war. However, even though they are recovering, they are not to be underestimated. With help from Germany, Italy, and others, they might soon recover into a force that will be a leading factor for the future of Europe, and the world as a whole.

Andsedia Capital Building January 30th
Grant Shalka was currently in his office looking over a proposed bill that would increase military funding. The current Andsedian military was able to defend Andsed effectively but Shalka saw the writing on the wall war was coming. Germany had annexed Austria and Czechoslovakia along disobeying the treaty of Versailles by doing things like establishing the Luftwaffe or sending troops into the Rhineland. Shalka figured Britain and France were sure to do something about it soon. Along with the fighting between Japan and China in the east and the Spanish civil war had ended with the nationalist side with Germany and Italian support winning had increased the tension.

Seeing all Shalka figured that a war on the same scale or bigger than the great war was a very real possibly and if Andsed somehow got sucked into the fighting they needed to be ready. The military currently had around 900,000 men enlisted. They had a decent sized navy and air force and a good amount of tanks and other vehicles so they could hold there own in a war for a while. But he figured it would be a good idea to strengthen the military. He signed the bill and sent it to be enacted.

The Plaza fell silent. Benito Mussolini took to the podium atop the balcony. "Italians, People of Italy! At this very moment your brothers are destroying the last bits of resistance in Ethiopia. Hundreds of planes are bombing the cowardly and savage resistance. They will learn to cower at the sky and clouds. They will fear the sound of our glorious language. They will run from our fierce and powerful troops. We have demonstrated our strength, power, viciousness, and the virtue of all Italians. We have shown the world what we can do if we put our hearts and minds to the task. We have truly united in a common goal, the betterment of our glorious state. It is this unity, this fraternity, this brotherhood that Italians share that will drive us to become a great power once again. Like our ancestors before us we will become strong, show the strength of our people, and the wit of our generals. We will show our enemies what strength we can muster. We will be victorious!"
Applause and cheers erupted from the crowd. Once the cheers began to die down Mussolini started again.
"We have an army that is the marvel of Europe, an air force capable of fighting Jupiter, a navy that can conquer Neptunes kingdom, the only thing that stands in our way is the devil himself. It is your duty to do what it takes for victory, for glory, and for honor. It is your duty to serve your country and your people. Be like your brothers in Ethiopia and join the military. Women be like your sisters and follow the men as medics, look after your husband and fathers estate, and when they return with glory and wealth all will be rewarded. We look to a new dawn today. We will be defined by no horizon. We will be controlled by no nation. As our fellow troops return from Spain they can tell stories of their glory. Do not falter in your path. Right now soldiers are assembling in Squares around the country. This is not something unique to us, the soviets have already begun an invasion, next it could be France or Britain, perhaps even Greece. We will not be surpassed by our enemies and rivals. Will we?"
The crowd responded in a massive "No!"
"We will not!" the crowd erupted in cheers.

"...and so slips the dogs of war."

On board a ship, in the docks but not quite out to sea, a soldier lights a cigarettes, inhales, then sputters and coughs, dropping it on the ground in disgust. It was never something that he was that fond of doing, the soldier did it mostly because it was "the thing to do" at the time, especially in the presence of other soldiers, but this was... a whole matter different from the problems things like this normally had. It was supposed to be high quality, imported, rumored to be from Germany or a captured colony of some sort, and was in short demand and of high value, with it's presence in the hands of the soldiers indicating the seriousness of what they were about to do before their departure, and how important they apparently were to the empire. Still, it was strong, perhaps too strong, and left a foul taste in his mouth, leaving him to think whoever they were that made it, wasn't all too keen on what the people wanted, let alone the average soldier. Looking up at the shore, which was higher than the ships, at least in the distance, his commanding officer, and several officers he had never seen before, turned to face the group of soldiers, and seem prepared to give a speech, or at least tell them something of grave importance. With many of the soldiers in the crowd noticing their presence as well, the officers turned to attention, and coughed loudly, drawing the attention of the soldiers, even over the roar of their conversations, and caused them to straighten their backs and face in their general direction, not fully able to sit or stand in their current predicament. The officers addressed the crowd, with an apparent gleem of excitement in their eyes, but also a hint of sorrow and gloom, with their demeanor tempering their enthusiasm given the apparent gravity of their situation. It was obvious to him, and most of the other soldiers, that despite all their preparation and political maneuvering over the last few months, they were about to be off off to war.

"This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin Nevile Henderson handed the German Government a final note stating that unless we heard from them by 11 o'clock, that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from the Polish border, or that a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.

You can imagine what a bitter blow it is all of us that our long struggle to win peace has failed. Yet I cannot believe that there is anything more or anything different that I, or any of us, could have done and that would have been more successful. Up to the very last it would have been quite possible to have arranged a peaceful and honourable settlement between Germany and Poland, but neitheir Germany nor the Soviet Union would be willing to have it. They had evidently made up their minds to attack Poland whatever had happened; and although they now say they put forward reasonable proposals which were rejected by the Poles, as evidence by our own interactions with the poles intelligence on the matter, that is not a true statement.

The proposals were never shown to the Poles nor to us; and though they were announced in a German broadcast on Thursday night, they did not wait to hear comments on them, but ordered his troops to cross the Polish frontier in the coming days. His action shows convincingly that there is no chance of expecting that these men will ever give up their practice of using force to gain their will. They can only be stopped by force, and we and our allies are today, in fulfilment of our obligations, going to the aid of Poland, who is so bravely resisting this wicked and unprovoked attack upon her people. We have a clear conscience. We have done all that any country could do to establish peace. The situation in which no word given by Germany’s ruler could be trusted and no people or country could feel itself safe has become intolerable.

And now that we have resolved to finish it, I know that you will all play your part with calmness and courage. At such a moment as this the assurances of support that we have received from the Empire are a source of profound encouragement to us. When I have finished speaking certain detailed announcements will be made on behalf of the Government. Give these your closest attention. The Government have made plans under which it will be possible to carry on the work of the nation in the days of stress and strain that may be ahead. But these plans need your help. You may be taking part in the fighting Services or as a volunteer in one of the branches of civil defence. If so you will report for duty in accordance with the instructions you have received. You may be engaged in work essential to the prosecution of war for the maintenance of the life of the people – in factories, in transport, in public utility concerns or in the supply of other necessaries of life. If so, it is of vital importance that you should carry on with your jobs.

Now may God bless you all. May He defend the right. It is the evil things that we shall be fighting against – brute force, bad faith, injustice, oppression and persecution – and against them I am certain that the right will prevail. There may seem there is no greater evil, no greater hell on earth than men should have to endure, than war, but this is simply wrong. In truth the greatest evil one may endure is to stand down in the face of our enemy, and evil, that would subjugate us, torture us, and ultimately kill us and our culture unless we stand against it and fight, for what we know is right. So remember, men, when you are out there, in the midst of the horrors that inevitably will await you, among the wicked and the damned, that there is a fate worse than death, a fate worse than war, a fate worse than fighting, and this fate will befall upon us all without your dedication and willingness for self-sacrifice, to struggle in order to protect this earth and our country."

State of the United Kingdom's Military
Total Figures
British Military: 4.5 million men (46 million Citizens)
British Infantry: 1.5 million

Canadian Military: 1 million men (11 million Citizens)
Canadian Infantry: 500,000 men

In anticipation of the war, the United Kingdom's military swelled up in size slightly larger than if it had been off-guard, which it had been in many cases of the war. The British military is a largely volunteer service, with conscription for about 30-40% of it's members, largely in auxiliary roles. It's emphasis is to use a small spearhead of elite, well trained soldiers to break through enemy defenses and take ground, while the rest of the military moves in to occupy said ground. Canadian military forces are seen as elite troops, in part due to their woodsman expertise due to the harsh nature of Canadian wilderness, and in part due to their relatively good military production figures (producing 20% of the mechanized forces of the war, and virtually all of the UK's). Canada's output of about 800,000 trucks and wheeled vehicles, for instance, exceeded the combined total truck production of Germany, Italy, and Japan. While just 8% of the German's military was mechanized, virtually the entire British military was, with 1 truck per every 3 soldiers (which could usually transport 10-12). As well, their small size lended them better to specific military roles, and they largely served as infantry, many of whom fought on the front lines. The combination of both American and British equipment, such as the Sherman, M1 garand, vickers machine gun and bren gun often gave them the best choices of weapons and equipment, giving them an advantage over most other military's.

The basic strategy of the military forces is to use a maneuver element to take ground, while a heavier elements back them up from afar. Infantry forces and tanks pin down or incapacitate enemy troops, suppressing the enemy, in order to call in artillery or mortar bombardments, or in close proximity use rifle grenades in order to defeat their enemies. As it takes thousands of rounds of rifle fire to kill or incapacitate an enemy, this is primarily used to suppress, while the artillery or other explosives are used to truly defeat and kill their enemies, especially if they are entrenched. As learned from WWI, artillery fire traditionally killed over 1000 times more than machine gun fire per round fired, and thus was considered a more effective way to kill the enemy. Without defense artillery was easily defeated, and therefore needed infantry both to scout and protect the artillery. Depending on the theater small arms fire, including from machine guns, traditionally resulted in 20-35% of casualties, while artillery resulted in 50-75%, and it could take between 7,000 and 25,000 rounds to inflict a single causality on the enemy.

At the battalion level, machine guns and artillery assault the enemy, while the infantry platoons rush forward to take ground or prevent return fire from their position. Infantry rush forward and then dig in, ever under the threat of enemy fire, building sand bag nests and other fortifications for the Bren Gun to fire from. Bren Squads and platoons are organized in to Binary divisions, relying on "Bounding overwatch" or leap frog for units to protect each other with, with one unit always providing fire on the enemy while the other team moves or recovers in some way, so as to always provide the defense of fire when taking actions that might expose the unit. Natural terrain features are chosen for defense, but at times units set up in open terrain when necessary, usually under the protection of fire or armor. British tanks and armored vehicles spearhead most assaults, while infantry remain on the defense in their makeshift trenches and bunkers to hold the ground they take.

Anti-aircraft batteries are present in nearly every battalion, and the 7.7mm british vickers machine gun and .50 caliber machine guns double as anti-aircraft weapons, especially for dive bombing aircraft. Giving their proliferation on nearly every CMP truck, which transport both infantry and logistics supplies, they serve as a powerful deterrent to aircraft attacks, and serve as anti-air defense when amassed in large numbers and in combination with battalion level assets (such as the 37mm anti-aircraft gun). While tanks and other vehicles are percieved as more powerful weapons intended as operational spearheads, the reality persisted that given their smaller numbers, infantry would serve as the key backbone of the military. Thus, infantry and light vehicles, as well as light artillery, were the predominant fighting force of the military, and more significantly influenced the outcome of battles than any other sources.

Tanks and Armored Vehicles
While used as an operational spearhead, realistically the relatively small number of vehicles, and their susceptibility to anti-tank guns and mines (and to a limited extent artillery and aircraft bombardment), lead to their use being more sparing, largely intended as shock troops to break through relatively hardened defenses, or defeat other hardened vehicles and tanks. As tanks only accounted for 15-25% of tank kills during the war, with rocket launchers, anti-tank weapons, mines, and artillery accounting for the bulk of tank kills, tanks were primarily used in the support role, rather than in tank on tank warfare. Aircraft also only contributed to a small number of tank losses, and generally were ineffective except in mass bombing raids. The United Kingdom produced 27,528 tanks and self-propelled guns from 1939 to May 1945, as well as 26,191 armoured cars and 69,071 armoured personnel carriers. A large volume of vehicles came from the Americans and Canadians during WWII, notably the Sherman from the americans and the CMP truck in WWII.

Matilda Infantry Tank Mark II- 2,987, from 1396 to 1945
The Matilda II was one of the longest serving tanks of the war, initially capable of defeating most enemy tanks, until the 2 pounder became obsolete and the 6 pounder, 75mm, and 76mm guns were required to defeat the substantially larger tanks of the war. It was largely supplanted by the Valentine Tank, which was cheaper, and produced in larger numbers, with nearly 8500 produced during the war. By 1939, it is equipped with the Venerable 2 pounder, able to defeat most tanks of the era, before the production of high end German tanks.

Valentine Tank- 8,275 produced from 1938 to 1944
Early in the war, the Valetine tank was one of the most effective of the war, and mass widely produced, largely owning to it's lower price and adequate armor and equipment for the era. Upgraded several times, it originally began with the 2 pounder, progressively working it's way up to the 6 pounder, 75mm and finally 76mm cannon in certain circumstances. While the armor and weapons were adequate for the time period, it proved to be extremely reliable, an important factor as 90% of tanks taken out of operation from the British were largely due to mechanical failures, an issue largely resolved by the production of the far more reliable Sherman tank. The Valentine was a venerable, classic design, influencing the cromwell with it's lower profile and short height, making it hard to spot at a distance and easy to protect while in the "hull down" position. The classic tank of Britain in WWII, influencing later tank design, it nonetheless became obsolete due to it's weaker armor, and was not used as a primary assault tank past 1943.

Crusader Tank- 5,300 produced 1941-1945
The first variation 'Crusader I' tank entered service in 1941, and, though manoeuvrable, it was relatively lightly armoured and under-armed. Improved armour thickness to 49mm marked out the "Crusader II' variant. The main armament for the Crusader Mark I and II's was an Ordnance QF 2 pounder (40mm) main gun, but the 'Crusader III' was fitted with an Ordnance QF 6 pounder (57mm) main gun. This variant was more than a match for the mid-generation German Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks that it faced in combat. As part of the 1st Armoured Brigade, the Crusader was to prove vital during the Battle of El Alamein, at Tobruk and in Tunisia. Retained in service because of delays with its replacement, by late 1942, the lack of armament upgrades, plus reliability problems due to the harsh desert conditions and the appearance of Tiger I heavy tanks among the German Afrika Korps, saw the Crusader replaced by US-supplied M3 Grant and then by the Sherman medium tanks.

Stuart light tank- 3000 Transferred to British service in 1941
An effective light tank, it's armor was comparable to many other German tanks at the time, and it's primary armament was sufficient to penetrate their armor out to 500 and 1000 meters. Despite this is faired poorly against German tanks, largely due to the environment, small numbers, and poor deployment of the vehicles. Minor changes were developed to increase the fire speed and range of the vehicle, but these ultimately were not well received and the vehicle largely took a supplemental role to tanks in the war.

Churchill tank § Production 5,768 produced from 1941-1945
The venerable Churchill tank was produced in large numbers during the war and frequently upgraded, being slow, but sporting heavy armor, making it suitable for tackling most heavy vehicles. It's armor was generally resistant to the heaviest of german weapons, and it's tank guns were upgraded during the war to be adequate at piercing most german tank armor. A large number of variants existed, largely as infantry support vehicles, due to it's high armor and slow speed. The Churchills were fired on many times by Italian and German anti-tank guns, but only one was knocked out and partially caught on fire. One tank was said to have been hit up to 80 times. The heavy armor made it all but invulnerable to enemy fire, and this proved particularly useful in many campaigns, especially in the close support role of infantry.

M3 Lee (Grant) Tank- 2,855 Transferred to British service in 1942
Originally an American tank, it was slow, heavy, and overall underarmored and powered for the American's liking, but was overall a decent tank for the war. Approximately 45% of the tanks, or 2,855 (45%) were officially handed over to the British government. While considered obsolete by American standard, the incredibly powerful 75mm gun was of immeasurable importance against the heavier German armor, who were unable to contend with it's high power. The vehicle also supported a large number of machine guns, making it useful in the support role. Reliable, dependable and powerful, it's poor maneuverability would make it less effective than the sherman while consuming the same amount of fuel, but on it's own it was still a very effective tank for the war.

Sherman tank - 17,184 from 1942 to 1945
The U.S. supplied 17,184 Shermans to Great Britain, mostly from 1942 and onwards. The production of Shermans was high and quick, giving rise to the volume of firepower needed to address enemy threats. Often they doubled as short range artillery or provided protection to infantry on assaults, rather than fight other attacks. Numerous variant of the sherman were produced, ranging from versions with the 75mm, 76mm, 90mm and British 17 pounder (know as the Firefly, produced in 1943) attached, the Sherman was a reliable, dependable tank with good armor, and that outclassed most other tanks in the war, only being superseded by the incredibly small number of german and soviet tanks by the end of the war. The sherman chassis was used in many vehicle designs, such as the M10 and M36 tank destroyers, as well as the crocodile, colliope rocket launcher, and many others. Due to it's high level of performance in comparison to most tanks and it's good reliability, as well as large numbers, it marched across Europe with ease, quickly taking ground and defeating hardened defensive structures. It also used gyroscopic stabilization of the main cannon, giving it extremely high accuracy when on the move, a feature that would allow it largely to outflank the german tanks of the war. These tanks were also widely used by the Canadian forces.

M10 Tank Destroyer (17 pounder achilles)- 1,648 M10 from 1943
A total of 1,648 M10s were supplied by the United States to the British Army via the Lend-Lease program. Based on the sherman, it's lighter armor and heavier cannon was intended for it to be used in the tank destroyer role, which it did quite well, but due to it's smaller numbers saw it largely in the infantry support role. Most of these tanks would be upgraded to hold the 17 pounder cannon by the end of the war, which could penetrate the armor of even the heaviest german tanks.

Cromwell tank- 4,016 from 1943 (in service 1944)
The cromwell tank, due to british industrial production issues, were not produced in as large a quantities as the sherman, however it was largely seen as the pride and joy of the British military. With a low profile, making it hard to spot, a heavy 76mm cannon (sufficient to penetrate most armor of the war, including the heaviest of german tanks), and good acceleration, it was used successfully in many operations to take on the best of german tanks. It's numbers were too small to make up the bulk of their forces, however in the direct anti-tank combat role it was one of the best tanks produced of the war.

Comet Tank- 1,186 from 1944
The Comet tank was one of the most powerful and well respected tanks of the war, with good armor, a low profile, and the powerful 77mm HV, which could pierce the armor of even the front armor of a tiger tank during the war. The Armour-piercing discarding sabot could penetrate 256 mm of armour at 500 m and 233 mm at 1000 m, and allowing it in theory to penetrate the armour of even the German Tiger II heavy tank. Most sources are in agreement that APDS was not available on D-Day itself, but reached Normandy in increasing amounts by the end of June or early July 1944. It was available for the breakout battle from Normandy and the advance to the Netherlands and Germany. Weight of the enclosed shot, minus the enclosing sabot, was 7.7 pounds. The tank, while effective, was produced in too small of number sand too late in the war to have a major impact, but nonetheless was considered among the most successful tanks of the war.

"It may go against my attempts to not be involved in Europe, but it will surely do us good. Send this telegram to The Arctic Confederation." Said Franklin D Roosevelt to an assistant of his that we'll never reference again, handing him a piece of paper to be typed as a telegram. The unnamed assistant was clearly worried as to what the President may be doing. But he'll soon find out. "Yes sir", hesitantly replied the unimportant assistant. The man then left the room to send the telegram.

These are the direct words of The President of the United States of America. I am sure you are aware of The USSR's recent actions, first the annexation of Finland, now the invasion of Poland. I needn't point out that you are likely the next target. So I have a proposition for you; in return for access to your vast oil and mineral resources for 30% cheaper than other buyers, you will be guaranteed assistance in all future military conflicts. It may be at a big cost, but a cost well worth protection from a foreign flag. Especially of the red variety.

Temporary Headquarters, Vilna/Vilnius, USSR Occupied Poland, Jan 31, 1939

Brigade Commissar Timoshenko walks into the Town Hall in Vilna which has made into a temporary headquarters. As he walks down the hall, Major Ulyanov walks up to him. "Comrade Commissar! New orders from Moscow exclusive to the 3rd,6th,and 1st Guards Rifle Divisions." the Major says. "Proceed." the Commissar says while walking hastily. "As an official communique from the Stavka Headquarters in moscow, it is ordered that the 3rd,6th,and 1st Guards Rifle Divisions are to proceed with the invasion of Lithuania and southern Latvia. Memel is being seceded to Germany and the 9th Leningrad Army is pushing into Estonia." The Major says. "Get to the broadcasting station, spread the order." "Right away comrade Commissar." says the Major as he departs towards the broadcasting room.

Narva, Estonia, Jan 31, 1939

The 9th Leningrad Army, comprised of hundred of tanks and millions of troops charge into the Estonian town of Narva, though the Estonians deployed many troops into the area, their weapons and defences were useless against the Soviet Warmachine. The last few Estonian soldiers held in the Town Hall, but artillery batteries from a few miles away bombarded the town hall, killing everyone inside. The Soviet Armies continue to push into the Baltics.

Snap Elections called in Arctic Confederation

January 30th, 1939 - Akureyri

The dead of winter may have seemed like a strange time for elections to be held at the top of the world, and indeed it was; the annual vote normally took place in August. These, however, were extreme circumstances. Just a few months ago the Head of Government had been dismissed on corruption and embezzlement charges, sparking public outrage and decimating support for the centrist Confederate faction holding a majority in Parliament. This in turn created an opportunity for more radical factions from the left and right to rear their heads. The recent invasion of Finland only added fuel to the fire, sparking fears of an invasion of the state of Finnmárku, this time from Russia, not the Kalmar Union, and heated debates about the wisdom of admitting it to the Confederation in the first place. The ruling faction had tried its best to restore stability, but with the people's confidence in it slipping it had at last been forced to call elections, scheduled for February 10th.

For the moment, at least, there seemed to be a lull in tensions. Protesters of all factions were rejoicing at the announcement of snap elections. The streets in front of Government House in the capital city of Akureyri were silent for the first time in months. Everyone knew it couldn't last long, however.

Inside Government House, on the first floor, the daily meeting of Parliament was about to get under way. In an office somewhere on the same floor the Minister of Foreign Affairs was reading a telegram from President Roosevelt of the USA. Normally the Head of Government himself would receive such a letter first, but as the most recent holder of that office was now sitting in a jail cell, the Minister of Foreign Affairs was responsible for it. Despite being a member of the Confederates, he was fairly neutral politically and was probably the only person all the major factions liked; as such, he had been chosen as the Minister to take over for the dismissed leader. After pondering for a while, he wrote out a response.

From the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Confederation, acting in stead of the Head of Government

I personally am quite in favor of this arrangement, and given the developing nature of our armed forces I think Parliament will likely pass it today. As you have probably been informed, of course, snap elections were called yesterday and will be held on the tenth of February. Nobody is quite sure how things will come out, given the recent divisiveness, and if one of the more radical factions - the Revanchists in particular - gains a majority they may attempt to nullify this deal.

With that done, the quiet but intelligent Minister went out to set Parliament in motion. The opening procedures were barely done when he presented Roosevelt's offer. After some heated debate, the measure was passed, 76 to 14.

"It seems that the Arctic Confederation is scared of an Invasion from us. let's ease this up so our Saami population doesn't revolt. Send this telegram to them." Josef Stalin would to a Commissar of his, handing him an official telegram with the seal of the USSR at the top. The Commissar was clearly unknowing as to what the General Secretary may be doing. But he'll soon find out. "Yes Comrade General Secretary", immediately replied the Commissar. The Commissar then left the room to send the telegram.

January 30th, 1939 - Akureyri

Parliament had just finished going through the details of the now-approved deal with the United States when the Minister was called back to his office. Another important telegram had arrived, this time from Moscow. He swallowed hard as he opened what he knew could be anything from a declaration of war to an offer to supply arms. In the end, however, it turned out to be on neither end of the spectrum. It was, it seemed, a reassurance that the USSR, despite its recent expansionism, was not targeting the state of Finnmárku. The unnamed Minister read the message with interest, but remained very skeptical.

From the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Confederation, acting in stead of the Head of Government

I am glad to receive your message, esteemed General Secretary. I must admit I remain wary, but I suppose it is impossible not to be given the increasing tensions all across Europe. In truth, much of the nation's worry of invasion in Finnmárku stems from the New Kalmar Union, not the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. You no doubt remember the Sámi people's struggle to separate from their Norwegian oppressors, and Norway's bitterness toward it to this day.

In any event, I wish your people the best. I agree that a meeting would be very beneficial for our two nations, but that is something I must leave for the incoming administration this February. What that administration will be, I cannot say. These past few months have been rough on my soul.

Best wishes.

The clouded skies outside seemed to our dear Minister to be war clouds on the horizon. Or perhaps the smoke of unrest. He could only hope he was being overdramatic.

THE KALMAR UNION

Starting in November of 1936 the Kalmar Military heightened military preparedness drafting conscripts and increasing military spending. On May 6, 1937, the government called up all those aged 15 for short periods of training. In addition to this, the Kalmar Cabinet ordered that one quarter of those conscripted in 1938 should be retained for further training. In 1938 the Kalmar Home Guard was formed, small groups of reservists and the Kalmar Women’s Voluntary Defense Service was expanded.

Throughout the 1930s many foreign models of aircraft and tanks had been ordered and received, and Swedish models of both were prepared for additional production. Though small in population the Scandinavian Nation had not been at war since 1814 and as a result was spared from the ravages of the first World War, the industrial capacity of the nation was proportionally higher than other nations. The following is a summary of a readiness report prepared by the Kalmar Military in case of war.

The above image shows the march Portuguese soldiers to the border.

The above image shows the effect of the above army reaching the border and fortifying it in case of attack.

Border of Spain and Portugal, The small city of Barrancos, The Portuguese Border Patrol, Main Office #2, January 31st, 1939

The border patrol would be hectic as of late because of the recent invasion of Poland by the U.S.S.R. Telephones would be ringing and the office would be bustling. A dainty, slim woman with a bun would be in her office when her phone began to ring. She thought she told her boss that today she needed absolute silence because of the humongous headache she was having. She'd pick up the phone and would say "Hello? This is Maria De Santos. Whom is it?" She'd stare out at the town that would have been recently rebuilt after many border clashes in the Spanish Civil War when loads of refugees poured into Portugal. That was also one of the days that she, herself came into Portugal. To escape the horrors of the Spanish Civil War. As a Spanish immigrant and supporter of general Salazar's views and his national coup by kicking out the Portuguese and Spanish Republicans and monarchists from the government positions. On the day she arrived from Spain, Portugal's border patrol was going crazy. She and her family had attempted to cross the border together but were separated when gun shots and military vehicles advanced onto the border to protect it from any would be Spanish terrorists. Death befell her also that day when her family of ten were discovered dead in a ditch with bullets in their heads. How inhumane, so she thought why not be a Portuguese Border Patrol officer? She had no lack in sympathy where the other Salazar loyalists that had been instated had no concept of sympathy. It's either you were a supporter of Salazar and Portuguese or you were kicked back out. In fact the only reason she had the job was because of her superior, Felipe Rosa Deliente taking a likeness towards her outwards looks. She'd snap into realization when she heard her boss shouting into the phone angrily. Maria De Santos was a day dreamer....but she got her darn work done. "Yes, Deliente? I was bloody day dreaming?" Deliente's voice would be calming down when he spoke the most horrible words into her ear via the phone. "We're closing the border down. Salazar's orders." Maria would stare out towards the peaceful town of Barrancos. She would've known this day was going to come if she only read the news. The moment the U.S.S.R invaded Poland and the declaration of war on Germany by the United Kingdom. She would've known Salazar's paranoia would catch up to him and would think that Spain would take opportunity of the ensuing chaos and would instantly begin reinforcing the border just in case of attack by those darn Spaniards. She was worried now. Deliente's voice once more broke this silence as he said "Salazar has ordered the reinforcement of the border of Portugal in key spots where he is worried if Spain does attack would it's army would march through first the key roads to Lisbon." Maria De Santos would hang the phone up and quickly get packed up. She needed to head home before things began to break down here at the office. After all she was Spaniard by descent and was fearful of her Anti-Spanish neighbors who lived across the street and practically surrounded her house. She was terrorized of the thought of them thinking of her as a traitor and devil Spaniard who would quickly side with Spain in the case of war. She knew she couldn't leave her house again, not after today. For today was the beginning of Salazar's increasing paranoia of Spain.

Later that same day, Lisbon, Portugal, January 31st, 1939, The government building.

"Portuguese troops have begun the reinforcement of the major roads/city points into Portugal in case of Spain's decision of attacking the glorious country that is Portugal. In other words Salazar has stated that the people of Portugal shouldn't worry because Salazar is the protector of the people of Portugal and the defender of Portugal against Fascism and those bloody Communists." Salazar would switch the radio off and would grin. A grin that explained his deepest fears coming true, a grin that proved his sanity was wearing down. It was the grin of Salazar manically thinking that Portugal shall be glorious against those Spaniards if they do attack. Portugal...shall never fall to Franco if they do attack. He'd keep thinking this all day until finally deciding on an action. He'd send a telegram to Franco to explain the Portuguese increase in border patrol and the promises that no events of war shall take place.

TELEGRAM
To Francisco Franco, Leader of Spain. From Portuguese leader Oliveira Salazar. Purpose of telegram:Promises of peace.

"Dear Francisco Franco,

I must know your intentions of Portugal's fate during this time of chaos. Do you promise not to invade the glorious country of Portugal because of the chaos happening elsewhere inside of Europe? Do not worry about the increase of border patrol. It is simply for satisfaction of my paranoid mind. It's also a benefactor to us just in case you do decide to invade us. We wish no ill intentions towards the Spanish government and hope for peace in this time of death. No harsh feelings?

Sincerely,
Oliveira Salazar."

FDR and a multitude of his Generals, Advisors, and his Cabinet had met for an emergency meeting as to figure out how The US should respond to red expansion. Many arguments were thrown about ranging from a Neutrality-Pact to full scale invasion. This continued until, "That's it!" A general proclaimed. "We must beat the Soviet scum at their own game!" "Do you have any idea how hipacritical we'd look!" Opposing Guy responded. "Oh posh I bet we'll be known for that soon any way. We need to invade Mexico, AT LEAST Mexico." "I've just got The Arctic to agree to the arrangements we discussed. A move like that may shake their trust." FDR said. "If you're afraid of loosing their trust send them a telegram explaining our motives."

*Next Day*

TO: THE ARCTIC CONFEDERATION
FROM: POTUS

I find trust to be very important. This is why I shall explain our motives to you. By the time you get this message troops will be landing on The Yucatan Peninsula from Cuba, The Californian Peninsula will have been cut off by land, and troops will be storming across the Rio Grande. Due to the instability of our southern neighbor, the rise of communism within their borders, and in all honesty, a need to expand and counter the USSR, we have indeed invaded Mexico. We simply couldn't allow Red influence so close to America. So we have decided to puppet Mexico and attempt to better the lives of the civilian there just as we did here. I hope you understand that we are only trying to protect the world against the Red Menace. God bless you. God bless us. God bless democracy. God bless humanity.

(I will go more in depth the rest of the war, but I wish not to speak of the same thing twice so Roosevelt's brief explanation above is what you have until next update.)
(P.S. Due to the instability of Mexico a significant military presence already existed due to immigration and attacks on American cities, {similarly to the Mexican Revolution in our timeline})
(P.P.S. Yes there was more to the argument about Mexico)

January 31st, 1939 - Akureyri

A letter to the Kalmar Union:

From the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Confederation, acting in stead of the Head of Government

I would not be against such an arrangement, but I will have to gain Parliament's approval. My only reservation regards our upcoming elections. Should the main opposition faction win there should be no trouble, but some fear a Revanchist victory, in which case I cannot say what will happen.

In the end, however, the alliance was approved by a narrow margin, and the news was relayed to the Kalmar Union.

It was not long, however, before something even more serious came to Parliament's attention. America was invading Mexico, of all things! Naturally, a vote had to be held regarding whether to continue backing America. Debate was fiery, near violent.

So fiery, in fact, that no decision was reached. There was a tie vote, and while normally the Minister would be responsible for breaking it, in this case he didn't dare. The argument turned to other subjects, and soon the protests were continuing. Deadlock in the government resumed. It was clear that no more decisions would be made until the election gave its verdict.

From the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Confederation, acting in stead of the Head of Government

Mr President, with great regret I must tell you that Parliament has been unable to reach a decision with regards to your current war. Indeed, it seems to have reignited the deadlock we've been enduring for months. The only way I see out of this is to wait until the new administration takes power. I was foolish to attempt any major undertakings so close to the election, and I apologize.

And with that, the Minister walked out of his office and into history.

Statement from the Kalmar Union

The Kalmar Union condemns in the strongest terms the invasion of Poland by the Soviet Union and the invasion of Mexico by the United States. The United States claims to be the light of liberty, democracy and freedom yet oppresses its neighbors without a casus belli.
We are declaring neutrality in both conflicts.

Moscow, The Presidium, Kremlin, USSR, FEB 2, 1939

Minister Vasiliy Krovchenko slams the phone, which catches all of the Presidium members attention. "The damn westerners are trying to beat us at our own game.. at this rate it could lead to a full scale Soviet-American war.. let's keep this with little proxy wars while expanding.. Comrade General Secretary?" "Fund a Communist revolt in Cuba, Station the 15th Yakutsk Army there as leverage, and start the Kishinev Offensive. Simple as that." Stalin would say while puffing on his pipe. "B-but Comrade General Secretar-" The Minister would begin to say as he was cut off "I know it's a US Territory, though I see a flaw, we should also found Revolutionaries in the Philippines, so they can't use that as leverage." Stalin would say. "R-right away Comrade General Secretary." The Minister would say hesitantly as he picked up the phone and contacted the Stavka Headquarters in Yakutsk.

Yakutsk, Stavka Headquarters, Berdigestyahsky Ploshad, USSR, FEB 2, 1939

"Is he insane?! *Sigh* alright, we'll get the shipments on the way." The Stavka Major would say. "Alright Yuri! get those crates in there! we need these to leave in 8 hours!" The Workers would work to get large crates of Weapons and other war equipment onto the large freighters "Helsinki", "Moscow", and "Sevastopol". Simultaneously, contacts from the Soviet Consulate in American Cuba and the American Philippines to negotiate with major revolutionaries to start a few rebellions. The Revolutionaries in the Philippines are convinced and would await the Sevastopol's arrival in a hidden harbor near the jungle, though the arrival will happen on the third.

International Unionists announce coalition with New Liberty

February 1st, 1939 - Akureyri

It's no secret that the Arctic has been more open to the more democratic socialist movements than most countries, but it came as a surprise to international observers when the International Unionists announced their plans for a coalition government with New Liberty, one of the original anarcho-syndicalist movements formed in 1920s Europe. Many Arctic dwellers were less surprised, however, as the Unionists have always been left-leaning and have never stated their goal of peaceful Arctic sovereignty as incompatible with socialism.

Should this new alliance win the elections, one can only speculate how the USSR will react to a socialist state so firmly opposed to its doctrine, as well as one that might be friendly to the western democracies. It also remains to be seen whether the USA and its allies will except a socialist country among them, democratic or not.

Of course, all of this will be meaningless if the Confederates achieve a majority; with war looming on the horizon for much of the world, their chances are looking up as many Arctic dwellers long for stability. Meanwhile, the Revanchists have been reacting in a fiery matter to the recent news, with small-scale riots briefly occurring in Reykjavik and Alta.
