Saving Dinosaurs?

Postby San Lumen » Mon Jun 18, 2018 8:28 am

I read a review of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and have seen multiple trailers for the film and it got me thinking for a interesting Scenario.

Dinosaurs have been brought back to life as in the Jurassic World film in a theme park setting. The park was destroyed and closed like in the film as well but the dinosaurs are still there.
A volcanic eruption is impending that will destroy the entire island and therefore dinosaurs are now a endangered species. The Senate is voting on a bill that will save the dinosaurs and bring them to a new location. The Senate vote is 50 in favor and 49 against. Your vote will decide their fate as the US President has said they will sign the bill if passed.
The bill includes a provision that Disney has a large plot of land set aside with basic facilities and a staff in place to care for these creatures and ensure they are fed and treated with the upmost dignity and respect while the "Dino Kingdom" construction is completed.

Your name is called. How do you cast your vote? Do you vote to save them or let nature run its course?

I would cast my vote to save them. All that effort was made to bring them back and in my view the beautiful creatures deserve the protection of the Endangered Species act. I could not in good conscience cast the deciding vote to doom a entire species to extinction when the means to preserve them is available.

What's your say NSG? How would you cast your vote?

Those "beautiful creatures" are responsible for the loss of many human lives and millions of dollars in damage.

Fuck 'em.

Well I could not in good faith do that. That loss of life and property damage was only due to arrogance, greed and unethical practices.

well its kind of hard to save them since
1. we wont know exactly when the volcano will explode
2. we have nowhere to put them w/o endangering the population on the mainland
3. dinosaurs on the mainland would be considered an invasive species and take control away from the native species
well that pretty much sums it up

It could be at any moment.

Im sure a place could be found for them.

And they wouldn't be a invasive species if their population is controlled.

It was due to a power failure. At least, that was the first park. You could make that argument about the second one, I suppose.

Evacuating a whole island of dinosaurs doesn't seem viable, and if we got the dinosaurs by cloning them from mosquitoes then we hardly need to keep them alive to preserve their species. We can just run another batch of velociraptors or whatever.

Nope, I'd vote against, as I wouldn't put additional human lives at risk combined with the loss of valuable equipment/transportation, in a risky rescue mission.
Just wait out the eventual BB-Q then show up with plates, forks, some pork n beans and BBQ sauce and have a grand ol BB-Q party.

I don't see any point in preserving them, save for the herbivorous ones.

But that might take a very long time and they are sentient creatures I could not watch them die knowing they could be saved. Maybe I'm a bit too compassionate but I simply could not vote against the bill.

As I understand it, the main problem we have with attempting to make dinosaurs is a lack of DNA samples rather than technology (Film or Game Theory, can't remember which show).

Let them die and use their bodies to make more, with the one stipulation that they all be male. If one flip-flops to female, she'd likely get trampled by all the dudes instead of giving the one dino who switches to male a harem.
The government is elected from pools of experts in whichever fields are necessary, with polarizing issues having a minimum quotient for political balance (like abortion rights would be decided by a mix of pro-choice/pro-life expert advocates, for example).

Its quite simple. Do you vote to save a entire species or let them go extinct once more? Why or why not?

But the Apatosaurus that was trying to escape the eruption was super sad.

And that's why I would cast my vote to save them. That scene in the trailer of the dinosaurs running away from the volcano made me so sad.

well that may be true but what about the greater human race and greater animal kingdom of the world, your willing to have them go extinct to save a few dinosaurs from a volcano? where there isolated so no more humans can be hurt.

If we have the genetic data on hand to create them again, there's no point in risking human lives to assist creatures that amount to organic robots. We have the technology, we can rebuild them. Harder, better, faster, stronger Actually, that would be a really bad idea, so let's... not make them any more lethal than they already are.

If we don't the question is more complicated.

I would vote against. There's not really any point in saving them. If I remember correctly, in Jurassic World, Hoskins sent Dr. Wu off the island with the embryos, so you could just reincubate them if you want your dinosaurs back. Also, it costs too much resources to evacuate every single dino off the island. And more importantly, where would you put them? Putting them on the mainland is too risky and you'd need to find another tropical island close enough to a coastline but far away enough from human settlements to be safe and cost effective. And what about the mosasaur? In real life they're much smaller (around 60 feet, but still pretty big), but how would you control where the hell it goes, or catch it for that matter?
