"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown."

--HP Lovecraft, 1933

Introduction:

It is 1910, twelve years after the incredibly destructive Great War, which goes by as many names as there are people. The Great Shame to the shattered remnants of the Drachenstaat theocracy in honor of their overthrow and exile as a result of their defeat at the hands of their former colony -- while at the same time, People's Union of Drachenstaat celebrates it as the Workers’ Birthday, the dawn of their new communist era. The Mendeans had no fewer than three names for it, depending on who you discussed it with: the Eiren Winter, the Great People’s War, or the Continuation War. To the Rothians, it was simply ‘the Great War’, and to the Fanaglians it was ‘the Upheaval’ in honor of the collapse of their monarchy and the establishment of the Republic. Regardless of the semantics of the naming, all agreed -- it was a War to End All Wars. And so it had been, as for twelve years, the world had enjoyed a degree of peace unheard of in prior decades. There were always some minor conflicts raging in Nill, of course, and bush conflicts in Pahada, and the latest rebellion in the Clockwork Empire, but sustained conflict was a thing of the past. The Eiren nations, it seemed, had no more appetite for war, and instead turned to the business of peace.

Free from the horrors of war at last, people lept into anything, everything that could provide a degree of escapism from the last half-decade of terror and destruction. Culture flourished, as scandalous new dances spread from Fanaglia to the rest of Eiren, along with the brass undertones of a hopping new genre of music that sent chaperones the world-over swooning in dismay. Museums grew crowded once more, buoyed by a new generation of schoolchildren, and Eiren expeditions fanned out across the globe to hunt, find, and buy exotic new artifacts from foreign cultures for the amusement of those at home. Airships, once weapons of destruction and bombardment, now carried all manner of goods and passengers faster than ever, and the sprawling networks of railroads expanded and grew with each passing month. Telegraph poles spread up and down the continent, carrying news in a matter of days, not months or even years, and faster ships now cruised the seas. The world had never seemed so interconnected as now.

That was not to say that this new era was without issue or problems, not at all. The New Order had toppled the Old Order, but the newfound reign of Ibrahama, Menid, and Varenhold is threatened and undermined without and within. Dangerous new ideologies, born from the destruction of the Drachenstaat order, or arising from Ibrahamic philosophical debates, have the potential to destroy this era’s powers as assuredly as they overthrew the Old Order. Where the sparks of liberation and free-thought were lit, now lies the potential for a overwhelming and powerful revolution. Old grievances within society lurk underneath the facade of gilt and glory of post-war euphoria, and only time will tell if stability can be achieved…. Or if the cycle must begin anew. So it is in Rothia, where bitter reactionaries and militant youths meet in secret societies in catacombs and churches, plotting how best to restore their humbled nation’s glory. So too is it in the Clockwork Empire, where a beaten Aianrida licks his wounds even as rebel armies rise in the south, calling for the return of the exiled Protector. The world passed through fire and destruction, but not all share in the glory and prosperity of this new order. Those who have, must fight to keep what they have seized, and those who have nothing, must fight to survive.

“We sometimes congratulate ourselves at the moment of waking from a troubled dream; it may be so the moment after death.”
--Nathaniel Hawthorne, The American Notebooks

It is often said by post-war poets and authors that man made the world hell for himself during the Great War. In such a destructive conflict, where millions had perished in seemingly fruitless and unnecessary battles, and new and ever-more dastardly weapons were deployed on a near-monthly basis, this is not surprising. The world tasted poison gas en masse for the first time, and walkers and landships crushed crumbling buildings underfoot. The spectre of Famine walked the countryside, hand-in-hand with the pale figure of Pestilence as hundreds of thousands perished due to starvation, or the pandemics that swept in armies’ wake. The aphorism, ‘war is hell,’ took on a deeper, more personal meaning to the millions that suffered through the Great War. Yet, greater threats lurked - and continue to lurk - unseen and unknown by most. Forces so terrifying, so unthinkable, as to drive the most battle-hardened veteran insane in an eyeblink, or to make the most traumatized civilian long for the privations and desperation of war once more. Select few are dimly aware of the unseen horrors behind the metaphorical cosmic curtains, but most dismiss them as superstition, or native nonsense, lending them no credence or further thoughts. Fewer still have seen the supernatural in motion and lived to tell the tale -- and the rarest few do so with their sanity preserved.

This is a story about those unlucky few, the more fools they, who sought to part the nebulous curtain of ignorance and to lift the veil of confusion. In doing so, they desired to glimpse that which, perhaps, was best left unseen, and gain knowledge of the unknowable…

Will you survive this story? Or will you end up disemboweled by murderous cultists in Klippenstaad that daub your blood on the walls of your hotel as a warning to your friends and family -- to avoid the path that you took? Will you survive that, only to find yourself consumed alive by savage riverine gharials, deep in the murky swamps of Menid, your screams swallowed by the empty jungles with not a soul for miles? Or will you survive everything you encounter and succeed in your quest, only to finally succumb to the madness that gnaws at your mind, driven to mindless gibbering by that which cannot be understood, forcing your family to leave you, restrained and helpless, in an asylum in the Volksunion?

Only time will tell.

“Slowly but inexorably crawling upon my consciousness and rising above every other impression, came a dizzying fear of the unknown; a fear all the greater because I could not analyse it, and seeming to concern a stealthily approaching menace; not death, but some nameless, unheard-of thing inexpressibly more ghastly and abhorrent.”

--HP Lovecraft, The Crawling Chaos

IC Knowledge:

"It is for this reason that I urge, with all the force of my being, final abandonment of all the attempts at unearthing those fragments of unknown, primordial masonry which my expedition set out to investigate."
--Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee, Family Letters, 1913

Jackson Elias
Image

Jackson Elias is 38, of medium height and build, and dark-complexioned. He has a feisty, friendly air about him and, as an orphan in Kuffurt, Varenhold, he learned to make his own way early in life. He has no living relatives, and no permanent address. Although born a Drachenvolk, he has since discarded Drachenvolk culture and the masks that go with it, eschewing them as outdated and obsolete. He is an avowed atheist.

You like him, and value his friendship, even though months and sometimes years separate one meeting from the next. You'd be upset and probably crave vengeance if anything happened to your friend. The world is better for having Jackson Elias in it.

His writings characterize and analyze death cults. His best-known book is Sons of Death, exposing contemporary Khalees in Parthan. He speaks several languages fluently, and is constantly traveling. He is social, and enjoys an occasional drink. He smokes a pipe. Elias is tough, stable, and punctual, unafraid of brawls or officials. He is mostly self-educated. His well-researched works always seem to reflect first-hand experience. He is secretive and never discusses a project until he has a final draft in hand.

All of his books illustrate how cults manipulate the fears of their followers. A skeptic, Elias has never found proof of supernatural powers, magic, beings, or dark gods. Insanity and feelings of inadequacy characterize death cultists, feelings for which they compensate by slaughtering innocents to make themselves feel powerful or chosen. Cults draw the weak-minded, though cult leaders are usually clever and manipulative. When fear of a cult stops, the cult tends to vanish.

Skulls Along the River -- written in 1901, this exposes headhunter cults in Oulous.
Masters of the Black Arts -- Written in 1903, surveys supposed sorcerous cults throughout history.
The Way of Terror -- Written in 1904, it analyzes systemization of fear through cult organization. Warmly reviewed by renowned Mendean socialist, Dzhorzh Sorel.
The Smoking Heart -- Written in 1906, the book details the historical practices of the Dødsfolket, an ethnic group within the Volksunion, including no-longer practiced dark rituals involving sacrifice and skull masks that honored the death god Sifyr.
Sons of Death -- Written in 1908, discusses modern-day Khalees in Parthan; Elias infiltrated the cult and wrote a book about it.
Witch Cults of Varenhold -- Written in 1909, summarizes covens in nine Varenholt counties; interviews practicing witches.
The Black Power -- Written in late 1909, expands on The Way of Terror and includes supplementary material and interviews with cultists and cult leaders.

All of you have, in some way or another, a connection to the intrepid reporter and author, Jackson Elias. Some of you have become fast friends with him over the course of his travels, to the point where he makes a point of coming to visit while passing by, or even - more rarely - altering his itinerary so that he might pay you a call. A couple may have had a chance with him at something more than a passing dalliance, but those futures were dashed by Jackson's incessant wanderlust and drive. Others are friendly, but impersonally so, maintaining a friendship over radiograms and telegrams, communiques that are lengthy, but few and far between due to Jackson's travels into poorly-mapped areas. Some are more passive, responding to his updates on the Oulen death cults at their leisure, while others write regularly, regardless of a response or not. All of you, however, have heard of Jackson Elias, and have read at least one of his books. You all know that he is, for lack of a better word, a 'debunker' of superstition and a devout opponent of all things 'supernatural,' eschewing both as mere avenues for the cunning to control the gullible, and by doing so, gain power and wealth for themselves. You know that he is a hardy man, possessed with a great deal of determination, an even greater amount of wanderlust, and a ferocious independence.

Jackson Elias works alone.

Oh, he works with people when he's in a specific area or city, but he doesn't have a team. He has no partners, he has no sidekicks. He travels to a place, works largely on his own or with a handful of close allies, and - once done - departs on another adventure, leaving his friends and coworkers behind as he gallivants off to the opposite end of the world. It's part of his appeal, really, to the public - this charismatic, handsome man, traveling the world unfettered by the restraints of friends or family, his job taking him to odd and exotic locales, where he brings a scientific mind to the matter at hand and by doing so, educates the wider world. A contemporary Bill Nye meets Indiana Jones, really. His closest connection is perhaps his publisher, Johann Kinder, who often is in charge of handling Jackson's fan-mail and other personal communiques, sending messages around the world without judgment, and passing on the choicer messages to Jackson at the site of his latest obsession.

Which is why Mireille Delatte, a Fanaglian balloonist and aviator, found it odd when she received a communique from Klippenstaad - from Johann Kinder, on behalf of Jackson Elias.

The Carlyle Expedition lingers in the memory of most Eirens and other Mizrics, given that it had only happened four years prior. The expedition, setting out from Varenholt, was led by a millionaire playboy who sought to spend his summer playing at being a Mehmetologist. After spending a month in Rothia where the more serious academics accompanying the playboy nobles and magnates were able to study and consult various documents and artifacts, the expedition set out for Asterdan - former southern Mehmet. There, after only two months, the Carlyle Expedition suddenly abandoned their dig site and took ship south, to Eastern Parthan. Rumors swirled that the Expedition had found some clue to the vast treasures of the lost Pharaoh Teklemet, but they were never confirmed. Then, a month into their supposed safari, the entire Carlyle expedition vanished, with telegrams going uncollected, and money no longer being withdrawn. Half a year passed, and the distraught sister - and heir - of Rutpert Carlyle set out to Parthan to uncover what happened to the expedition and to rescue her brother.

With the help of local guides, her expedition uncovered a number of mass graves that contained the bearers and many of the academics accompanying the expedition. All the bodies bore signs of mutilation and heavy abuse, but there was no sign of the bodies of Rutpert Carlyle or a number of other expedition leaders. Distraught, Erika Carlyle returned to Klippenstaad to throw herself into the family business, while local authorities hunted for - and ultimately hanged - a number of natives accused of the murders. Rumors still swirl, however, that the Expedition did indeed find the vast wealth of Pharaoh Teklemet, but fell afoul of some curse placed upon his final resting place, a curse that brought doom to every man and woman of the Expedition. Others claim that Rutpert Carlyle was brutally murdered by agents of his sister, in an internal family coup d'etat that saw her become the sole heir and owner of the vast Carlyle family fortune. Regardless of what one believes, there are a number of questions and mysteries that surround the Expedition that remain unresolved or unanswered even to this day.

It seems Jackson Elias took it upon himself to find out more. But why does he need your help?

KLIPPENSTAAD SCOOP

RUTPERT CARLYLE, the playboy whom everybody knows - or knows about - is quietly leaving Klippenstaad tomorrow to check out the tombs of Mehmet! You've seen the cuties RUTPERT has found in the nightspots. Who can doubt he'll dig up someone - er, something - equally fabulous from the Asterdani sands?
--Klippenstaad Pillar, 4 Apr 1905

CARLYLE EXPEDITION EMBARKS FOR ROTHIA

Led by the fabulously wealthy playboy Rutpert Carlyle, the Carlyle Expedition departed this morning for Pia aboard the crack Rothian steamship Royal Standard.

Contrary to earlier reports, the expedition will perform research in Rothia under the auspices of the Penhew Foundation before continuing to Mehmet next month. Readers may recall the enormous party which Mr. Carlyle, now 24, gave at the Nalfort-Bechel Hotel upon reaching his majority. Since then, scandals and indelicate behavior have become Carlyle's trademark, but he never has become tarnished in the eyes of Klippenstaad socialites.

Members of the expedition have been reluctant to reveal their purpose in Mehmet.

OTHER EXPEDITION MEMBERS:
  • Renowned Mehmetologist Comte Aubrey Penhew is assistant leader of the team and in charge of excavations.
  • Dr. Rutpert Huxton, a fashionable 'Sigmundian' psychologist accompanies the expedition to pursue parallel researches into ancient pictographs.
  • Miss Hypatia Masters, romantically linked in the past to Carylye, will act as photographer and archivist.
  • Mr. Josef Baas, intimate to Mr. Carlyle, accompanies the group as general factotum.
Additional members may be secured while in Rothia.

--Klippenstaad Pillar, 5 Apr 1905

CARLYLE DEPARTS MEHMET

NEKHDJEHENET -- Comte Aubrey Penhew, temporary spokesman for the Carlyle Expedition, indicated Monday that the leaders are taking ship to East Parthan for a 'well-earned rest'.

Sir Aubrey denied rumors that the expedition had discovered clues to the legendary wealth of the lost expedition of Pharaoh Teklemet, maintaining that the party was going on safari "in respite from our sandy labors."

Rutpert Carlyle, wealthy Klippenstaad leader of the expedition was unavailable for comment, still suffering from his recent sunstroke. Discussing that unfortunate incident, local experts declared Asterdan far too hot for Drachenvolk at this time of year, and suggested that the young Varenholt had not been well-served by his youthful enthusiasm, rumored to have led him to personally wield pick and shovel.

The expedition will travel to Asabom in Parthan, where they shall stay with a local Fanaglian magnate, Mr. Royston Whittingdon at his residence in Collingswood House. From there, they shall travel inland to the city of Borian, where they shall embark on a lengthy safari before returning to Klippenstaad.

--Klippenstaad Pillar, 14 Jul 1905

CARLYLE EXPEDITION FEARED LOST

BORIAN -- Uplands police representatives today asked for public assistance concerning the disappearance of the Carlyle Expedition. No word of the party has been received in nearly two months. The group includes wealthy playboy Rutpert Carlyle and three other Varenholt citizens, as well as respected Mehmetologist Comte Audrey Penhew of Rothia.

The expedition left Borian on August 3rd, ostensibly on camera and hunting safari, but rumor insisted that they actually were after legendary Asterdani treasures, notably the lost wealth of Pharaoh Teklemet.

Carlyle and his party reportedly intended to explore portions of the Great Depression, a vast plain to the northwest of Borian.

--Klippenstaad Pillar, 15 Oct 1905

ERIKA CARLYLE ARRIVES IN PARTHAN

BORIAN - In response to clues, Miss Erike Carlyle, sister to the Varenholt leader of the lost Carlyle Expedition, arrived in port today aboard the Asterdani vessel Fount of Life.

Several Kikuyu-villager reports recently have been received concerning the putative massacre of unnamed whites near Aberdare Forest.

Miss Carlyle declared her intention to find her brother, regardless of the effort needed. She brought with her the nucleus of a large expedition.

Detailing agents to coordinate supply and other activities with local Parthan representatives, Miss Carlyle and the remainder of her party depart for Borian tomorrow.

Her companion, Mrs. Viktoria Portner, indirectly emphasized Miss Carlyle's purposefulness by regaling us with dreadful tales of the rigors of traveling aboard the ramshackle Asterdani ship.

--Klippenstaad Pillar, 11 Mar 1906

CARLYLE MASSACRE CONFIRMED

ASABOM - The massacre of the long-missing Carlyle expedition was confirmed today by local Parthan police representatives.

Authorities blame hostile Nandi tribesmen for the shocking murders. Remains of at least two dozen expedition members and bearers are thought found in several concealed grave sites.

Rutpert Carlyle, Klippenstaad's rollicking playboy, is counted among the missing, but his body was not recovered among the mass graves. Many bearers and other expedition members are reported dead, however.

Erika Carlyle, Rutpert Carlyle's sister and apparent heiress to the Carlyle family fortune, led the dangerous search for her brother and his expedition. She credited Kikuyu tribesmen for the discovery, although local Parthan police actually found the site.

Among other expedition members believed lost, and without confirmed bodies, are Comte Aubrey Penhew, noted Mehmetologist; Klippenstaad socialite Hypatia Masters, and Dr. Rutpert Huxton.

--Klippenstaad Pillar, 24 May 1906

MURDERS HANGED

ASABOM - Five Nandi tribesmen, convicted ringleaders of the vicious Carlyle Expedition massacre, were executed this morning after a short, expertly-conducted trial.

To the end, the tribesmen steadfastedly refused to reveal where they had hidden the bodies of the white leaders, including Rutpert Carlyle. Barrister Harrick, acting for the Carlyle Family Trust, cleverly implied throughout the trial that the massacre was racial in motivation, and that the fair-skinned victims were taken to a secret location, there to suffer the most savage treatment.

Miss Erika Carlyle, defeated in her efforts to rescue her brother, left several weeks ago, but is surely comforted now by the triumph of justice. The administration of the Carlyle family fortune now falls upon her slender shoulders.

--Klippenstaad Pillar, 19 Jun 1906

Character Applications:

"If I am mad, it is mercy! May the gods pity the man who in his callousness can remain sane to the hideous end!"
-- HP Lovecraft, The Temple

So, the key to the RP is the character you create to help write the story. The application is below, but I want to offer some context or advice first to help you craft your character. First and foremost, create a character you’re invested and interested in, but don’t get settled with that character. Be willing to move on or sacrifice them if the plot calls for it. Your investigator should not be a superman or superwoman, surviving without issues until the end of the RP. You should very much expect to have to create at least another character by the end of the RP. That doesn’t mean that your character’s death, maiming, or descent into insanity has to be pointless, however.

Secondly, your character is not a superman or superwoman when it comes to the various tasks involved in the RP. If your character is a conman, they shouldn’t be even attempting to read Ancient Mehmetian unless it’s a running joke. Know your character’s limitations -- IC action can be taken to develop more skills or overcome them, but your character can’t be an expert in everything. Let other characters shine when the time comes. Find your character’s niche in the story, and build from there. Characters that are Mary Sues or Gary Stus are…. Boring, really. Unless it’s a satire and they’re actually the most incompetent people to walk the planet, but even so…

As for ground rules:
  • Be reasonable with backstory; again, your character can’t be perfect at everything
  • Most people have no detailed knowledge or experience with the supernatural, beyond soirees that dabble with fortune-telling. Understand that your characters will probably be skeptical of actual voodoo and witchcraft and other things that go on in the RP at first.
  • Your characters MUST have a connection to Jackson Elias in some way, shape, or form. This is to tie you to the RP introduction. This can be as simple as being an obsessive reader of his books, or encountering him on a train to Menid and being enraptured by his jocular but distant manner, or even simply being pen-pals with him for years since you were a child.

Additionally, you may not want to RP a character from your nation, which is entirely your right. I've drafted a list of towns and colleges from a number of other nations so that you can perhaps incorporate them into your backstories, or even mention them casually in your background as a way to deepen your character's history or potential connection with other characters. If your character is an academic - and many people will likely play academics in order to have a background with multiple languages and a knowledge of the occult - then you'll need to have information about your college and other such things. The following list is by no means exhaustive, but simply an ongoing effort to provide additional information for people as needed.

Background Colleges & Towns:

Country:List of Towns:List of Colleges:
Volksunion
  • Volksstadt (formerly Drachenstadt)
  • Bessel
  • Großer Haud
  • Hafen des Winters
  • Eisenschmiede
  • Frederiks Stadt
  • Zentrale Universität des Volkes
  • Hans Idler Universität des Rechts
  • Die universelle Institution des Lernens von Minderheiten

  • Rothia - The capitol of Inoroth, located centrally in the upper half of the nation at the conflux of three rivers, known for being the heart of the nation’s bureaucracy and traditions
  • Pia - The other Free City, located in the South at the outflow of the Great Lakes, known for it’s port atmosphere and exotic markets and goods.
  • Etre Fortezza - Another port city, but has a less of a posh and refined feel to it compared with Pia.
  • Sassonia - Nestled in the mountains, this town is known for small-scale industry and craftsmanship as well as a number of guild schools
  • Rothian Academy of Arts and Social Sciences - Famed for producing some of the best civil servants and bureaucrats in the nation
  • Rothian Central University - Famed for producing skilled professionals, like doctors, lawyers, and engineers
  • Pianese International Institution for a Rothian Education - Trains the elites of Rothian colonies.
  • University of Pia - Famous for a massive collection of foreign artifacts

  • Carbur - Capital of the Duchy of Polydore. Blue-collar mining and rail town
  • Cadari - Capital of the Duchy of Cadwal. Situated between the sea and rolling, fertile hills, life here is slow-paced and people are kind to one another. The idyllic atmosphere has inspired many artists and poets throughout the years
  • Arvirar City - Capital of the Duchy of Arviragus. Bustling trade city famous for its theater and night life
Varenhold
  • Höfn
  • Stykkishólmur
  • Skien
  • Gothenburg
  • Hässleholm
  • Landskrona
  • Söderhamn
  • Ystad
Menid
  • Bandar Garbi - located on the northernmost coast of the Asfaron Sea. It is the capital and second largest city in Menid. It is known for it's vast harbor and ancient seafaring tradition. It is also the center of the older merchant houses of Menid
  • Tsirkas City - located across the bay from Bandar Garbi. It is the largest city in Menid. It is the cultural and economic heart of the country
  • Qala Qarsa - located on the mouth of the eastern straits. It's the third largest city in Menid and is one of the wealthiest. It is the home of the banking sector of Menid. Imagine Constantinople.
  • Nekhdjehenet - the fourth largest Mendean city and is the largest city not on the coast. It sits at the junction of the tributaries of the great Qarilik River. The three tributaries provide ample farming ground and the Qarilik itself is a major artery of inland trade. The northern Qarilik, unlike it's southern portions, is surrounded by farmlands in a fertile valley. The region around the fertile lands of Nekhdjehenet is desert. As one goes south from Nekhdjehenet, the lands slowly become a hellish marshland.
  • Bandar Velikavan - the westernmost city on the mainland. It sits on the Markaz and has been going through a major boom in the past forty years after the creation of the rail network. It is known for its beautiful mountain views, the only ones in Menid. It's the fifth largest in Menid.
  • Habze - the second largest inland city and the seventh largest overall. It is a major industrial city in the old heartlands of Menid. Originally founded as a mining settlement, it soon grew into the industrial heart of Menid. Imagine the Ruhr meets British Coal Country.
  • Tsirkasian Center for Fine Arts
  • Shoresh School
  • Ghazi University

Premade Character Samples:

Since not everyone has the energy or inclination to come up with completely unique character concepts each and every time, I took the liberty of using some pre-made character sheets, adapted for Vaporverse backgrounds. This way, if someone doesn't want to craft their own character from scratch, they can use the examples below for their own, or they can build a modified version. Alternatively, these can serve as back-up characters, should the player's character die or go insane as a result of IC actions.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality: An intelligent and witty woman, Helene is extraordinarily aware of her talents and capabilities. Years of traveling with her Uncle, who gave her a thorough but haphazard education in a variety of fields, have made her into a very willful woman. More at home in trousers and sitting astride a Mehmetian camel than she is in a parlor demurely sewing, Helene struggles to engage well with the rigid nature of Rothian society. In recent years, she has become more aware of her advancing age and pressing need to marry, but refuses all suitors -- or is refused by them in turn, due to her unladylike nature -- that do not accept her goals and desires.

Likes: Mehmetology, Archaeology, sarcasm, Rothian wines, academic conversations, displays of prowess (physical or mental), mutual respect, racing

Dislikes: Boarding school, flippancy, condescension, arrogance, chewing tobacco, mules, marriage

Fears: You fear entrapment in a traditional marriage, forced to play the role of a demure Rothian noblewoman, unable to freely pursue your goals and dreams of leading a Mehmetian expedition of your own.

Goals: To earn a doctorate, uncover a lost Mehmetian Pharaonic tomb.

Personal Strengths: Eiren literature, Archaeology, History (esp Mehmetology), First Aid, Research, Persuasion, Sharpshooting

Personal Weaknesses: Pride, empathy

Mental Problems (if any): Upset and visibly distraught by mention of your boyfriend, who you refuse to mention without prompting. You may reference the incident during other situations, but you don’t volunteer specifics unless pressed.

Sanity Assessment: Middling (58/99). Less so when dealing with personal mentions of David Whitte.

BACKGROUND

Great War-specific History: Nothing major; simply a stint as a civilian ambulance driver during the Great War. It was here that you honed your skills in first aid.

History: When your parents died of a cholera outbreak, you were packed off to live with your nearest relative, Uncle Horace. You remain extremely fond of your uncle, but it was obvious that he was the least prepared man to bring up a young lady of twelve years old. Indeed, he took you with him on his many trips across Mehmet, where he worked for the Foreign Office based in Nekhdjehenet. Traveling allowed him to indulge his passion as an amateur archaeologist and you grew to share this passion, enjoying the many opportunities to explore Mehmet’s long colourful history.

Eventually, you were packed off to boarding school to become a proper young lady. Not to your liking, you much preferred your summers in Mehmet with Uncle Horace. After finishing school, you decided to attend Ghazi University, able only to study Eiren Literature. In truth you wanted to study archaeology properly, and although a good student, you were bored. This is why you became an ambulance driver in the West Bank during the Great War.

That is how you met your boyfriend, David Whitte. He was a Fanaglian from Kraftenburg. Rather than return to your studies in Menid, you went with him to Kraftenburg, where you found that you could study archaeology at the university there. David was studying Anthropology. Unfortunately David was murdered on a field trip in the Duchy of Cadwal, and when you investigated his disappearance, you discovered an evil that haunts you to this day. You were unable to address the evil that murdered your boyfriend, as the outbreak of the Fanaglian Civil War drove you to return to Menid.

That was four years ago, and you have remained single and devoted to your studies, obtaining a degree in archaeology from Ghazi University, followed by a Masters degree. It is your aim to obtain a doctorate. In the meantime, you support yourself by writing short stories and articles for popular magazines. This is how you encountered Jackson Elias, who struck up a written correspondence with you following your publication of a review of his latest book on ancient Drachenvolk death cults. Briefly entertaining the notion of a romance with the handsome world-traveler, you instead found yourself fast friends, entertained by his wit, experience, and seriousness.

Driven by the memory of what you found in the Duchy of Cadwal, you have relentlessly explored the unknown and supernatural, accompanied by your friend, the antiquarian Henry Brinded. Despite your efforts, nearly all of the monsters you’ve found turned out to be of the human variety - and the remainder, exposed as fakes or impossible to prove one way or another.

Connection to Jackson Elias: Written correspondence with Jackson Elias for several years; several visits back and forth as he travels nearby. Good friends, mutual interest in ancient Mehmetology.

Family: Uncle Horace

Notable Skills: Mehmetology, History

Languages Spoken: Rothian, Fanaglian, Menid (several dialects), ancient Mehmetian

Experience with Supernatural: Well studied in the occult, but with few supernatural experiences save for the one experience in the Duchy of Cadwal, which saw your boyfriend brutally murdered. You constantly hunt for clues and evidence to help you put that ancient evil to rest, but have been unable to confront it since.

OOC Introduction:

Hello. This is the OOC thread for a Lovecraft-themed RP based around the regional canon of Vapor, a Steampunk region with its own map, cultures, religion, and history. As a result, the RP is closed to everyone except for members of Vapor. If you’re interested in participating in this RP, or joining Vapor overall, please head over to the Vapor OOC thread! We’re always looking for additional recruits.

For those who are already members of Vapor, and are here because I’ve nagged them enough on the Discord, welcome to the long-awaited OOC thread for the HP Lovecraft-themed RP set in the canon we’ve lovingly created for the past year or so. This RP will be based around a Dungeons and Dragons module, adapted heavily to fit the Vapor canon and history. Cities such as New York, London, and Cairo, will instead be replaced with alternative cities from Roth, Varenhold, or southern Mehmet. Similarly, the cultures mentioned in the module will be replaced with their close equivalent, and real-life names will either be scrapped entirely or replaced with an appropriate alternative from our histories.

I’m not an expert in Dungeons and Dragons by any means, but from my understanding, dice-based games don’t translate well to forum-based RP. This means that instead of me or you rolling dice obsessively to determine success or failure, we’ll instead be going with a more appropriate narrative flow, where the story and your level of detail and engagement are more important than dictating actions or failures. At certain points in the story, I may well flip a coin to determine what happens according to things laid out in the module, but I don’t plan to do this for every single thing. This means that you, dear reader, guide things -- not the dice, not Lady Luck, but you, and the posts you make.

However, I have a favor to ask. I’m working from a script, essentially, to make this RP run smoothly. You all have access to the internet; you can easily look up the script out of curiosity or a desire to be prepared. I simply ask that you not do that; I think this RP will be more entertaining or fun if none of us know what specifically is about to happen next.

Please, use this thread as a normal OOC thread to post character applications, ask questions, comments, concerns, etc. Feel free to chat with other players about your planned actions, or use this thread to make collaborative posts together!

OOC Rules:

You’re all adults (or at least mature teenagers). The rules are fairly simple.
  • Be civil to other players OOCly. Being mean IC? Absolutely. Don’t bring it into real life.
  • Post consistently. We can’t build suspense well if half the players only post once every two weeks.
  • If you have disputes over the way I handled or responded to your character, and you’re not satisfied with an explanation I gave you in this thread? TG me or DM me on Discord. Talk it out with me and we’ll see how to rectify things.
  • Your characters may very well die; that’s fine. Don’t get emotionally attached to your characters! Be invested enough to build good characters, but not attached enough that their death might upset you!
  • Suspension of disbelief is kinda needed for a Lovecraftian RP; be nice about it.

BASIC INFORMATION

Name: Mireille Delatte
Image

Age: 29

Gender: Female
Photo ID (or written description):

Citizenship: Fanaglian

Affiliation (Museums, gangs, societies, etc): South Cynfelyn Aviator's Association

Rank (If military): N/A

Occupation: Balloon pilot

Wealth: Ekes out a modest living making deliveries and carrying passengers around Bosquet Ombragé

Equipment/Weapons: Her only special equipment are those items relevant to flight -- a compass, a sextant, ropes, various hooks, and warmer clothes for high-altitude flights. She also keeps a small pistol in the basket with her, as one cannot be too careful when dealing with both the Pannas Tritios and the skywaymen who make their living by robbing unsuspecting air couriers and sky taxi pilots. However, she abhors guns and only keeps it with her out of necessity; she has only ever threatened to use it once and has never actually fired it.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality: Kind (perhaps overly-so), non-confrontational, and tends to be reserved, keeping her head down and doing what's expected of her. Harbors a deep dissatisfaction with her current life, however, and longs to leave the dull family business and provincial life behind so she can resume her passions and ambitions. She remains professional when it is asked of her, but she can be bitter and darkly sarcastic when in more personal company.

Likes: While she may hate to fly professionally, she does enjoy being in the air and is fascinated by the physical mechanics of flight. Not only does she love working out the ideal altitude and angle of thrust from the small propeller mounted on her balloon, but she just enjoys being alone, relaxing and letting her thoughts wander where they may.

Dislikes: She dislikes loud people with loud personalities, as well as her job (and her life situation because of it) and the anti-intellectualism so common in her part of the country.

Fears: That she's wasted her potential. Also feels nervous during storms, even when standing on solid ground.

Goals: To return to university and explore the relationship between mathematics and aeronautics

Personal Strengths: Skilled pilot and mathematician, dependable and punctual, honorable and loyal

Personal Weaknesses: Not physically strong and often struggles to find motivation, often getting lost in imagining "what if" scenarios

Mental Problems (if any): No diagnosed ailments, but feels resentful about what she perceives as the destruction of her academic career by her family, followed by feelings of guilt for wanting to hold her crippled mother at least partially responsible. Often fantasizes about how much easier her life would be if her mother had died that night her father had shot her. Is prone to bouts of depression and is known to drink heavily to cope.

Sanity Assessment: While she has maintained a facade that everything is OK, or at least manageable, she remains so bitter and feels so trapped that she is nearly at her breaking point; if something in her life doesn't change in a big way, her occasional ideations of killing herself or her mother may become a reality.

BACKGROUND

Great War-specific History: She was only a child when the war broke out, but, with her father being called away to fight, she helped her mother run the family business, learning to fly a balloon by the age of 13 in the process. In addition to their usual pre-war duties, she and her mother also delivered supplies and messages for the military during the campaign against the Mendeans, sometimes covertly and often under cover of darkness.

History: After the end of the war, her father came home, but was never the same. The doctors called it "shell shock"; Mireille and her mother did their best to support him, but he was drinking was becoming an increasing problem and he would often lash out (sometimes violently) during his frequent bouts with poorly-managed anxiety. In 1899, eager to put some physical space between herself and the stresses of home, Mireille enrolled in the Tagan College of Science and Technology in Cynfel City to study mathematics. Despite her family's modest income, she was hopeful about being awarded a scholarship to continue attending the prestigious school beyond her freshman year, and she appeared to be on track to achieve her goal when tragedy struck: her father had gotten drunk again and, despondent, had attempted to kill her mother before turning the gun on himself. Her father died instantly, but her mother managed to survive; however, she would never be able to walk again after that. Mireille was forced to drop out of university and return home in order to care for her crippled mother and maintain the family business. When the Second Fanaglian Civil War broke out shortly after, she and her mother refused to get involved beyond running occasional supplies for the Republicans, instead focusing what energy they had left on remaining financially solvent in her father's absence and her mother's disability.

Connection to Jackson Elias: Jackson Elias had hired her to carry him and his small team around Bosquet Ombragé, Mont Rouge, and the Marais Noir as he studied the enigmatic and elusive Pannas Tritios tribe of cannibals who lived in the swamp. When one of his interactions with some of the tribesmen went awry, Mireille managed to swoop in and carry him and his assistant away from danger.

Family: She has only her disabled mother and a few close friends

Notable Skills: Skilled pilot, adept in matters of mathematics and physics

Languages Spoken: Native Cynfel speaker and speaks passable Arviragan in conversation.

Experience with Supernatural: In her travels through and around Pannas Tritios territory, she has heard many rumors of Pannas magic and mysticism, but remains skeptical, as she has had no such experiences herself.

City description of Varenhold's capital city, Kippenstaad:

Klippenstaad, 1910:

Population: 2.1 million

Located on the southern coast of the largest of Varenhold’s islands, the city rests on the delta of one of the major rivers, Aku River, or the Aukusti. The Council of Masks resides here most of the time, but they do have personal residences elsewhere in Varenhold. The local government is a city council and mayor, elected by the people of the city and immediately surrounding areas. There are many districts in the city, rich ones, poor ones, the factory districts bordering the river. Several districts are where immigrants have settled.

The city is located where one of the largest clans of Varenhold used to camp for the long, cold winters. As the clan grew larger, the camp became a permanent village, then town, before before finally, during the colonization by Drachenstaat, Klippenstaad became large enough that it was considered a city. The center of the city is haphazard, reminiscent of the layout the ancient Varenholts had built their encampments and then village in. As it grew larger, the city found some order as it took to resemble the shape of a wheel, the major thoroughfares the spokes. All of the roads are paved, cobbled as they were built, but if one follows the roads as they wind through the city, many end as alleyways, dirty, dusty, muddy places that good folk shouldn’t roam in.

The weather is cold, especially during the winter, with summers reaching a comfortable temperate-ness. The weather is often cloudy, with enough rain. The winter storms from off the coast brings rain, snow, and sleet; The spring showers bring rain, and the summer thunderstorms bring rain and hail.

There is a sizable police force present in the city, for all intents and purposes to keep away crime, but if you ask a resident what they (the police) do, you might find your answer a confused stare, a laugh, or some mention of the Court, which has an unusually strong presence in the city. However, there has been an increase in police activity, as it seems the Council has finally, possibly, decided to decrease what the Court can get away with. Since the Great War, a rival to the Court has been on the rise, contributing to the increase in police.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality: Lord Luciano is cordial but not immediately trusting, wary of strangers in fact. He does what is required and keeps to himself mostly, though he has a precious few to whom he opens up a bit more. At home, he would often make those around him uncomfortable. Being an educated foreigner at his current position, however, many probably attribute Luciano's nervous habits to that, finding him interesting in spite of them. His accent and occasional mistakes in language 'cover a multitude of sins' so to speak, but under that surface he is clearly a haunted man.

He has a generally nervous posture, never seeming quite at ease. When out, he walks briskly with minimal swaying of shoulders or arms, always with purpose. Luciano also avoids eye contact when speaking to most people, instead his eyes have a tendency to dart about rapidly, like he's looking for something no one else can see. He is easily startled by sudden loud noises, sometimes ducking for cover like he had as an artilleryman in the war. He often removes his handkerchief from his pocket, unfolding it and refolding it the opposite way "so the creases don't settle in". His hands have a slight tremor, and whenever they are free for too long, Lord Luciano absent-mindedly runs his left thumb over the tips of his other fingers rapidly. Alternately, he bites the pad of his thumb when thinking. He also has restless feet, bouncing them up and down rapidly whenever seated. Most nights he has nightmares, sometimes of the war, sometimes of how his wife and daughter died. Other nervous habits include looking over the shoulder frequently, over-preparing everything, and compulsively counting everything four times "just to be sure".

Likes: Order, predictability, preparedness, solving difficult problems, small gatherings, debate, "hard" sciences, alcohol, coffee, vegetables.

Dislikes: Chaos, uncertainty, unsolvable problems, any unplanned physical contact (slaps on the back, bugs crawling on skin, etc...), loud noises, confined spaces, large crowds, "chaotic" ideologies and "soft" sciences, darkness, tobacco, tea, meat.

Fears: Dying alone, being watched, never learning how the paranormal world operates.

Goals: To uncover the truth about the world of spirits, angels, demons, ghosts, etc... and reconnect with his wife and daughter who are in the afterlife.

Personal Strengths: Classical Rothian education, respectable wealth, persistent attitude, relative physical health

Personal Weaknesses: Squeamish around blood, reluctant to use a weapon, not terribly strong, enduring, or fast, makes friends slowly, paranoid.

Mental Problems (if any): Today he would be diagnosed with PTSD, as well as possibly Paranoia and/or OCD

Sanity Assessment: (35/100) Holding it together

BACKGROUND

History: Born in 1876 to Count Elanzo and Countess Silvanna Raminotto of Lietodici in Pia, Luciano grew up the youngest of five, two brothers and two sisters. His childhood was also spent surrounded by many cousins, aunts, uncles, and extended relations who came to visit or were in turn visited. The Raminotto home was rumored to be troubled, however, and when Countess Silvanna died under mysterious circumstances in 1884, the visits ground to a halt and all semblance of family cohesion was lost.

Martial (or Civil) service being mandatory in Inoroth, it is traditional for well-to-do boys to begin specializing in a military subject whilst still underage, to ensure their admission as officers to the branch of their choice. Carlos, the eldest, was a towering figure who had been born a few centuries too late, as his notions of chivalry and honor would have made him an excellent armored knight of old. He nevertheless chose Cavalry as his specialization, and practiced riding and saber combat. Guglielmo, the second oldest, was whispered to be rather dull and not much for anything intellectual, but was very coordinated and intuitive, always been fascinated with flight, so it was decided he should become an ensign on an airship. Although he struggled through the schoolwork about ballast conversions and plotting courses through wind currents, Guglielmo fashioned a homemade airship out of a hot air balloon and some propellers connected to a miniaturized coal-gas engine, which he piloted around with considerable skill. Lastly, Luciano, being good with books and interested in getting away from his Father as soon as possible, studied physics and trajectories so that he could become an officer in the Artillery.

During this time, Luciano also secretly married Lady Rosella d'Isolaverdi, his childhood sweetheart and daughter of a neighboring Count, without either of their father's knowledge or consent. When they were discovered, it was decided that matters could have been far worse for the families, and the whole affair was swept under the rug. They soon had a daughter of their own, Isadora, and on the whole life was beautiful for a time. But that joy was not to last.

The Great War broke out when Luciano was 16 years old, but Inoroth did not enter the war until much later. When mobilization began in 1894, all three brothers had already finished with their mandatory period of service, and all three volunteered to return to duty. When Inoroth entered the war not long after, the two older brothers were sent as part of a large contingent to support Asterdan, while Luciano's unit was rushed to the Fanaglian front. In the Asterdan collapse and disaster of the Expeditionary Campaign, Guglielmo's Airship was lost with all hands, and Carlos Raminotto was badly wounded and captured by the Mendeans, expiring as a POW not long after. Luciano's artillery unit spent the war digging into positions, being shelled mercilessly, settling into the routine of it, only to be shuffled to where-ever else the line was threatened, repeating the whole process all over again.

One night, one of those rare spaces of tedium where neither army seemed very interested in fighting and the men begin to relax, Luciano was gathered with his men laughing and talking around the fire. Suddenly, he thought he saw a young child wandering across the muddy trench floor. None of the other men could see her, though, and they teased him about his "new girlfriend" as he gave chase. The child darted into one of the shallow bunkers carved into the trench-wall. Just as Luciano ducked in after her, the unmistakable sound of an incoming howitzer shell whined over head. Horrified, Luciano balled up instinctually as the earth shook and dirt flitted down from the rough ceiling. When he looked up, ears ringing, there was no sign of the young girl (though Luciano thought for a moment that he heard faint laughter).

Emerging from his hole, Luciano was met with the sight of his entire section, twenty-five men in all, blown to pieces and a large crater formed where they had been standing. Overwhelmed by grief and fear, Luciano snapped and his memory pretty much blacked out after that. The infantrymen in that part of the lines, however, swear to a man that Lord Luciano single-handedly operated the least-damaged gun in his section for for two hours before Battery Command sent someone to relieve him. For his gallant bravery in the face of great loss, Lord Luciano was awarded the CCVO and sent to the rear to recuperate. The commendation did not mention the child in the trenches.

It was only weeks later that an already broken Luciano learned that, the same day as his harrowing experience, five-year-old Isadora, his only daughter, had succumbed to fever, and that his wife had passed from the same two days later. The news nearly drove him mad, and the only consolation was the coincidence of the whole matter. To this day, Luciano is convinced that it was the ghost of his daughter that saved his life.

After the war, Luciano returned home in tatters. His father, Count Elanzo, tried his best to be supportive, but he had pegged his hopes to Luciano's brother's and never seemed to accept that they had died and his youngest had lived. His sisters were better, but they could not even conceive of the horrors he had endured. He would withdraw during dinners, spend free days wandering about the estate and hunting. He never found beds comfortable again, and preferred to sleep outside. Teaching at the University of Pia helped for a while as Luciano buried himself in the work, but the pressures of home proved too much, and a change of scenery was in order. Taking his inheritance and leaving the County of Lietodici to his eldest sister Lady Elenora, he embarked. So, that is how Lord Luciano now finds himself in Fanaglia, teaching at Tagan Tech and leading a quite comfortable life in a foreign city.

Connection to Jackson Elias: Correspondence on the nature of the supernatural. Although they disagree on whether or not it exists, their cordial debate over letter has been a welcome aspect of Lord Luciano's weekly routine.

Notable Skills: Proficient at calculating trajectories and vectors rapidly and accurately. Knowledge of chemistry and chemical reactions.
Competent at managing large sums of money in diverse accounts. Has done a fair bit of outdoor camping and has decent woodcraft and survival skills. Is a pretty fast runner.

Languages Spoken: Fluent in Rothian, Drachensprech, and Cynfeli.

Experience with Supernatural: After his ethereal experience in the trenches, Luciano has delved into all manner of literature on the super-natural, from clearly false ghost stories to seances to haunted houses. It was this interest that led him to Jackson Elias.

BASIC INFORMATION

Name: Faïçal bin Abdullah Teck al-Kayseri (Faïçal Teck)
Age: 37
Gender: Male
Photo ID (or written description): Faïçal cuts a rather dashing figure at 5'11", with jet black hair, a Greek nose, good but not outstanding bone structure in his cheeks and jaw, and deep brown skin and eyes. He has a highly distinctive but not terribly disfiguring scar running from just above his right eyebrow down his face, taking off a very small corner of one nostril, and continuing down on a slight diagonal to the center of the base of his chin, and then missing his neck and resuming just below his collarbone and running almost straight down all the way to his left knee, which he acquired during the Great War, along with four other scars- one large bullet wound on his upper left arm, a cut on his right pectoral from shrapnel, a bayonet stab wound in his abdomen, and a deep cut in the side of his left thigh. Despite his somewhat degenerate bohemian lifestyle, regular exercise (riding, swimming, gliding, et cetera) and a high metabolism keep his figure trim.
Citizenship: Khadari
Affiliation (Museums, gangs, societies, etc): Teck Group/National Museum/Foreign Ministry Special Research Bureau
Rank (If military): Leytenant-Coronel of the Foreign Legion of His Most Serene and Imperial Majesty's Imperial Guard (honorably discharged with special commendation and a suitably raised pension with medical benefits for injuries in the line of duty, recipient of the Imperial Cross for Valor, the Asterdan Campaign Medal, and the Order of the White Peacock, Second Class)
Occupation: Appraiser of rare and valuable objects for the Teck Group's auction house and for the National Museum, part-time field research contact for the Special Research Bureau
Wealth: Kr. 240,000 (£34,268,483.75 or $45,902,771.06 in RL 2018) in total, with about Kr. 40,000 in savings or various accounts, Kr. 110,000 in stocks and investments, and Kr. 90,000 in other assets, and an annual income of about Kr. 15,000 from his Special Research Bureau salary, Imperial Guard pension, and Teck Group and National Museum salaries (plus bonuses and sales commissions from the museum and auction house, and stock dividends from his investments that can raise that figure significantly from year to year). His father Abdullah also maintains an unspeakably large trust on his children's behalf, but Faïçal won't inherit his share of it until Abdullah dies (along then with his inheritance, which is an even more cosmic sum), or just decides to release the money to his children. If he ever really needs something super super expensive, though, he can ask his family to chip in, and together they have an fortune so obscenely and staggeringly titanic that words can barely express it, and will probably help him out.

Equipment/Weapons: Loongsim Type 21 .38 semi-automatic pistol, Foreign Legion cavalry officer's saber, antique Serhat II-period dagger (not going to do an exhaustive list of equipment like Ino :p )

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality:
Faïçal is friendly and gregarious, a boisterous and very well-traveled bohemian and genuine bon vivant with a taste for the finer things known as a popular social butterfly among Khadar's aristocratic and wealthy circles, and something of a thrill-seeker. Faïçal is also strongly opinionated about almost everything and can be stubborn or headstrong, and can be something of a vicious gossip, but is also regarded as a good judge of character and generally is a sharp analyst, particularly in social situations. Despite his sometimes-complicated relationship with his family members, he is fiercely loyal to his family, as well as to his close friends.
Likes: Various sports and athletic activities (swimming, surfing, sailing, rowing, hang-gliding, riding, boxing and whatever I'm calling Khadar's version of muay thai), reading and drawing, travel, socializing of all varieties, meeting new people
Dislikes: Those members of the aristocracy who look down on "new money" like his family (more broadly- pretentious people), even newer money than his family (contradictory and dissonant, yes- but more broadly, people who generally just have no class- that can also include old money families), ascetic/puritanical types,
Fears: Dying alone and loneliness in general, needles, spiders,
Goals: Faïçal is fairly happy with the life he's carved out for himself, but he'd eventually like to get married, more to just have children and a continued family line than for anything else. He also would like to find some more interesting fieldwork assignments for the Special Research Bureau, or perhaps dabble in working for the Imperial Guard Signals Division (their intelligence agency), the Army Intelligence Directorate, the Air Force Special Reconnaissance Division, the Office of Naval Intelligence, the Directorate-General of Tranquility, or the Urban Planning Commission Statistics and Analysis Department,
Personal Strengths:
Personal Weaknesses: All manner of substances (cocaine, tobacco, alcohol, and opium being among his favorites, as well as the powerfully hallucinogenic/euphoric substance derived from the nectar of the Khadari scarlet bromeliad which is known in the city and around the world as Ruby), extremely impatient (which is saying something for a Khadari, and a rich one no less), prone to risky behaviors and flights of fancy (like, to use a modest example, the time he spent Kr. 5,000 building a sandalwood sailboat, whose fragrance was promptly ruined by the seawater and which he quickly grew bored of and got rid of- or perhaps his regular habit of taking his own small blimp up over the city to hang-glide off of)
Mental Problems (if any): Probably some form of PTSD from his wartime experiences, though he heavily self-medicates to deal with this, and also benefits from having a strong support network of family and friends; possibly experiences some sort of manic episodes (or maybe he's just an adrenaline junkie or a very bold person, it's not totally clear).
Sanity Assessment: Wartime trauma, a sometimes-tumultuous relationship with his family (not unusually so for Khadari aristocrats, but still), and a demanding lifestyle (heavy substance use/abuse and partying, lots of travel, a rich diet, intense exercise) don't combine as a great formula for stability, but with the support of friends and family and his own ability to stay somewhat in touch with his emotions, he's not doing terribly. 55/100?

BACKGROUND

Great War-specific History: Faïçal was serving as an officer in the Imperial Guard's Foreign Legion and stationed in Koh Imthut, one of Khadar's oldest Clockwork concessions, when the war broke out and he was brought back to join one of the newly formed air assault groups. He served on the frontline in the Guards First Aerial Brigade, serving variously in paratrooper, glider, autogyro, and airship special assault units against Asterdani and Rothian troops. Serving on the frontlines, he received various scars, being lightly slashed (though very shallowly, meaning he kept his sight) from his face down to his leg, grazed with shrapnel in the chest, badly cut in the side of his left leg, shot in the arm, and stabbed in the abdomen. It was this final wound, which fortunately hit his liver rather than more fragile organs, that nearly killed him due to blood loss and subsequent infection, and he spent several months recuperating in the City before returning to the front near the end of the war in Asterdan. He was decorated for his valor and over the war steadily promoted, reaching the rank of lieutenant-colonel by the end. Six of his other brothers and half-brothers also participated in the war, though all but one served in the air force or the navy, and one half-brother in the air force died when his long-range bomber airship was shot down over Inoroth.
History: One of the younger sons of business tycoon Abdullah Teck, by the time Faïçal was born the Teck empire was fully established as a powerful new force in Khadar. Like his brothers, he was raised to eventually help run and expand the family business, but as one of the younger sons he had considerably more freedom in pursuing his own path in life. He was known as something of a playboy even once he joined the Imperial Guard, and retains some of this image, though his travels and experiences have let him find more direction in his life in the wake of the war.
Connection to Jackson Elias: A few years ago, Faïçal met Jackson at a bar while he was travelling through Khadar and hit it off with him, showing him around the Free City, entertaining him, and introducing him to some of the city's movers and shakers. After Jackson left, they have maintained a friendly correspondence.
Family: Faïçal is the fourth son of Abdullah Teck by his second wife (out of eight, three by his first and five by his second), the patriarch of the mighty Teck family, whose manufacturing interests have grown over the years to become one of Khadar's greatest business empires, with tentacles now reaching into everything from shipping to finance to sugar and palm oil plantations. He also has three sisters and four half-sisters, all older, and all four of his grandparents and both of his half-siblings' grandparents are alive as well, along with a vast array of aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives.
Notable Skills:
Experience with Supernatural: In his time with the Foreign Legion in the concessions, Faïçal visited several temples near Koh Imthut and Koh Sang where local water spirits and rain deities supposedly live, and had a vivid experience there, though he can't be sure it wasn't mere coincidence and not an actual supernatural event. He was escorting some archaeologists along with a few other soldiers and some local monks at such a temple built out on an islet in a coral reef lagoon near Koh Sang. The archaeologists, guided by an older monk who had, in his youth, spoken with a priest who had supposedly visited the temple several times, entered its inner sanctum, when all the water suddenly drew off of the reef. The archaeologists removed several icons and tablets with writing to take them back for study, but suddenly all the water came rushing back (he later discovered this was a tsunami). They were all forced to climb up into a massive banyan tree to escape the water, along with hundreds of snakes- all of which seemed to be king cobras, but none of which were aggressive. Though everyone survived, the articles that the archaeologists had removed were all lost in the rush to escape the water, and when the sea receded the temple's inner sanctum had somehow re-sealed perfectly. Faïçal later dabbled in some reading about the religious and occult practices of the Far West, but mostly moved on to other things.

Saw someone do this, figured I might as well do it as well?

City description of the Free Imperial City of Khadar:

Khadar, 1910:

Population: est. 15.2 million in all districts within the demesne

The city of Khadar is located along the western of the two straits that connect the South Sound and the Crimson Gulf to the main body of the Emerald Sea, with its core districts lying on the western shore on the mainland facing towards the island of Koh Arij, which lies in between the two straits (known as the Golden Strait and the Ivory Strait, to the west and the east respectively). To the west, the city's core districts run along the eastern shore of Lake Balshun, which lies more or less in the center of the peninsula on the mainland and which is connected to the waters of the Golden Strait via two canals that run through the heart of the city (creatively named the North Canal and the South Canal). The city is also webbed with dozens of smaller canals, known as khlara.

Three major shipping terminals lie in the core districts- one at the mouth of each canal, known as the North and South Harbors, and the Old Harbor roughly in between them. Three aerodromes also serve the city's core, though only one actually lays within the old walls, which date from the reign of Emperor Bahri I in the 1200s. This aerodrome is actually located along the South Canal, while the other two lie north of the North Harbor and the old walls and on the far side of Lake Balshun, respectively.

The area encompassed by the Bahrian walls is by far the densest part of the city, and is also the seat of Khadar's government, with the Imperial Palace, the Palace of the Grand Assembly of Notables, the Metropolitan Proconsulate, the Imperial General Staff Headquarters, the Office of the State Security Regency, the Chancellery, and the headquarters of every ministry being located in this region, along with most foreign embassies and many major businesses. In recent years a building boom has been adding taller and taller buildings to this region of the city, demolishing some of its historic villas and crowded slums. The Metropolitan Proconsulate and its Urban Planning Commission has also continued to expand the Metropolitan Transit System, building commuter rail and mass transit lines throughout Bahrian Khadar and even outside the old walls to some of the city's outlying district, which also connect to several of the major rail lines that run through the city. The city has a massive police force, who do a decent job of maintaining some semblance of public order in most districts despite their corruption (though they largely stay out of the city's slums).

Outside the old walls, the city gradually grows less dense, with a slightly less crowded urban environment eventually giving way to the suburbs. To the west, Lake Balshun is connected to the Bay of Opals by the Western Canal (another inventive name), which has a major shipping terminal at its mouth known as the Western Harbor, and the city runs up along the bay's eastern shore. To the south, the city gradually grows less dense, before the peninsula upon which it is situated splits into three smaller fingers. Several rail lines branch off to serve the suburban areas along these peninsulas, which also host a major aerodrome and three harbors, one of which looks south onto the Crimson Gulf, one of which is located along the Golden Strait, and one of which is situated near the mouth of the Bay of Opals. Just across from it is another harbor, serving freight vessels as well as the ferries that run from the city's westernmost exurbs in this area. These southwestern exurbs are located around the eastern entrance to the Southern Route, the shipping route that passes through the Great Lakes to the city of Kinsay on the Markaz Sea. To the east, across the Golden Strait, urban districts cover the southwestern shore of Koh Arij, running about as far northeast as Lake Imnoun before giving way to more suburban areas that trail up towards Lake Temenh and then give way to countryside. Koh Arij has four major harbors, one on each of its four sides, as the island is roughly a square, and two aerodromes, one located on each lake for a combination of shelter from wind and easy access by airship and flying boat. To the north, the city's urban districts run north until they meet Prahda Beach on the Bay of Opals (along the western shore), Lake Khydav (near the root of the peninsula), and the Khydav Canal, which connects Lake Khydav and a major shipping terminal at the northern end of the Golden Strait, at the northern end of the Puansri district. Lake Khydav represents the beginning of the lake country and is connected by canal to several other lakes further to the northwest, out in the countryside, which the suburbs trail off into to the north and west until meeting the limits of the Free Imperial City's demesne. Another harbor is located in this region at the furthest tip of the Bay of Opals.

While all regions of the city are awash with its masses of proletarian folk, its fabulously wealthy elite tend to cloister themselves either in grand villas and palaces right in the midst of the insane business of the old city, or far out in the suburbs along quiet country lanes with plenty of fresh air and space for gardens. Factories and workshops of all types are sprinkled liberally throughout the city, but there are particularly notable industrial concentrations near the Southern and Khydav Canals, and on Koh Arij. The city's worst slums are located along the southern shore of Lakes Balshun and Khydav, but such districts exist throughout the city, even within the Bahrian walls among all the grandeur of the government's offices and palaces. Throughout the year, it also has immensely popular beaches on the eastern and northern shores of Lake Balshun and all along its coastline by the sea, which are one of the few great levelers in an otherwise massively unequal city where rich and poor alike go to enjoy the water. Unusually, perhaps thanks to their city's climate and intertwined intimacy with the sea and its lakes, nearly all Khadari citizens can swim.

In some of the urban districts furthest from the Bahrian walls, the Urban Planning Commission has managed to enforce a north-south grid as a street plan, but in large areas of its central mass its streets have developed largely unplanned into a twisting morass, except for a number of massive tree-lined boulevards and highways that have been punched through the chaos to at least let goods, travelers, and troops travel quickly from one area to another. As they converge on (or radiate out from) Bahrian Khadar, they pass through the old city's massive, ornate gates, and in various areas both within and outside of the walls intersect with one another at grand roundabouts.

Khadar has no real seasons in the conventional sense- it's baking hot all year round, but it does have the wet season and the dry season. From about October to March, the city is inordinately dry (though in such a remarkably tropical place, this by no means makes it an utterly rainless, bone-dry desert during this time) and the humidity goes down (though the heat frequently goes up), while from April to September it tends to receive torrential downpours and very high humidity (during the hottest months, from May to August, but especially in July, absolutely incredible thunderstorms happen almost daily in the evenings, sometimes dropping many inches in a matter of hours).

Khadar's foundation as a trading port has been variously dated as far back as the 12th century BC, though many think it was probably around the 9th century BC when it truly emerged. At that time, it was little more than a speck compared to the modern juggernaut it was become, clinging to the rim of the Old Harbor (which is full of ancient shipwrecks which modern archaeologists are now devising techniques to dive on and study). Its gradual growth through the millennia and the foundation of its power- its canals and its fleet- have shaped the city it has become today, a cosmopolitan megalopolis on the sea, riddled with waterways of all sorts and endlessly growing bigger, richer, higher, deeper.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality: known to be a hard, but kind, man when not on Court business; can be reckless, taking what is in front of him at face value; gets things done; straightforward
Likes: Momentos/trinkets that mean something to someone; the ocean;
Dislikes: Intimidation (something that he, at 6’3”, is often called to do for the Court); puzzles; factories; Fancy people at their fancy parties; being alone
Fears: Fire; the Court; losing Marinette
Goals: leave the Court; marry his girlfriend, Marinette
Personal Strengths: Varen, haggling & good head for small business finances, combat (gun), combat (hand-to-hand), vehicle handling, physical fitness and abilities that come from a rather active lifestyle
Personal Weaknesses: sometimes becomes too invested in the people around him, spending time (too much, according to his Court colleagues) helping those in his neighborhood); reckless; loses track of time easily
Mental Problems (if any): Pyrophobic
Sanity Assessment: Rather stable, but due to his job, is more comfortable with violence, blood, and causing pain that most people (75/100)

BACKGROUND

Great War-specific History: Despite being only 15 when Varenhold rebelled, that was a time when everyone fought. He had been working in a factory (with small jobs for the Court on the side) when protests began to be organized. The man who would become Lord Mule on the Council of Masks led some that became violent, and everything devolved into rebellion. The Court called upon him more and more, and as the rebellion became war, that is how he helped the war effort.

History: Born in Kuffert, life was hard, but happy with his family, until the day of the fire that killed them both. He ended up in Klippenstaad within the year, taken in by his grandmother.

Connection to Jackson Elias: Both orphaned by the same fire, Jackson Elias is a childhood friend from Kuffert in Varenhold. Their paths diverged after the Rebellion, each of them participating in the Great War in a different way. Anders found himself in the Court, during and after the War, while Elias decided to avoid the Court, and is often on his book-writing adventures. Anders has actually only read one of his books, the one on Varenhold witches, and that’s because his (Anders’s) grandmother, Inari, claims to have been one. Given the nature of both men’s work, they don’t keep up much, but whenever Elias is in town, they catch drinks together at The Sparks, a dive that borders one of the factory districts in Klippenstaad.

Family: Grandmother: Inari; steady with a nurse, Fanaglian immigrant called Marinette Capelle, that patches him up from time to time

Notable Skills: good with a handgun, better with knives, he’s muscle in the Court for a reason: he knows how to fight; he’s able to handle both horse-drawn and horse-less carriages; years owning and running a pawn shop have given him good haggling skills

Languages Spoken: Varen (native), Cynfeli (fluent enough), Drachensprache (fluent enough)

Experience with Supernatural: His grandmother claims to have been a witch; His girlfriend says she sees ghosts sometimes; he figures that he only needs to worry about what he can see right in front of him, no use jumping at things that aren’t there

Connection to Jackson Elias: Since reading Elias's books, Egil has been outraged by the portrayal of his culture by the author, as such Egil has been using a portion of his time and SIRDA money to track Elias down. What Egil plans for a final confrontation is unknown.
Family: His sister Aud and his brother Dag
Notable Skills: Marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat, photography, typing, has picked up some minor skills in electrical and mechanical engineering from his work as a spy.
Languages Spoken: Drachensprache (German), Dødsspråk (Norwegian); knows a few other written languages
Experience with Supernatural: n/a

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality: He's very much a man of actions not words. Het cares about what you have done, not what you say you will do. He's a man of few words and he's got little love for the generation who did not fight in the war. Het's a bit of a racist, classifying cultures as either Martial, Civilized, or Barbaric. For all his bluster, the time in the war did shake him to his core. He's very afraid of what comes after death and he fears the day that he is called before a higher power for a reckoning. Yet at the same time he accepts his actions. Het wants to leave society. He believes his crimes make him not worthy of society yet at the same time feels that modern elements of society are not worthy of the name.
Likes: Tradesmen, Academics who actually go into the field, Hunting, Mehmeti and several ancient Martial Cultures
Dislikes: Asteri Culture, Modern Youth, Monarchists and Theologians, Entitlement in general, Fellow non-veteran or field based academics
Fears: Death, Spiders, Snipers
Goals: Achieve enough wealth to allow him to retire from teaching and live in the countryside on his own.
Personal Strengths: He's an excellent tracker, hunter, and sniper. He's also a strong student of history and societies.
Personal Weaknesses: Dismissive of others, lone wolf attitudes, incredibly militant
Mental Problems (if any): Racism against Asterdanis caused by PTSD and other side effects of PTSD. He often dehumanizes his targets or enemies, a legacy of his operations in the Qarilik Campaign.
Sanity Assessment: 65/100

BACKGROUND

Great War-specific History: Het served as an Armed Scout in the 4th Brigade of the 12th Division. His unit was assigned to the deepest and densest parts of the Qarilik Rainforest. As an Armed Scout, he was often part of five man teams that went deep into the jungle to scout out enemy supply lines and determine the loyalties of the native tribes and villages. Most missions were simple reconnaissance where the teams went in and out without ever contacting the enemy. However about 1 in 10 missions saw contact with either hostile natives or Asteri forces. These often took the form of a hunt. Each force would attempt to sneak up on and eliminate the opposing forces through ambushes and traps. Snipers, ambushes, spike traps, and snake pits were all used by both sides. During the war Het became increasingly radicalized against the enemy natives and began to wonder why some societies grew to embrace the truth of civilization while others rejected it. During the war, Het served as a sharpshooter for his team, engaging tribals from vast distances or from tree tops. Other times, when the team was caught in ambushes, he would be forced to fight with melee weapons and pistols. The fighting in the jungles of the Qarilik was bloody and personal. Het emerged from the war a scarred man, afraid of death and seeking to understand why barbarians like the Erebiq evolved.
History: After the war, Het returned home to a small town in the Khanganah Commonwealth, not terribly far from Tsirkas City. He attended local college, learning history with a focus on Ancient Mehmet. After graduating, he was accepted to Ghazi University to student Ancient Societies. There he became a close student of Sorel, a noted social scientist. There he fell into the academic group the Society of Man, which sought to preserve classic Mizran culture and espoused the three-race ideal. As he was completing his final year, his learned his parents had been killed while on vacation to Qar Qarsa. Asteri terrorists had gunned them down in the opening wave of the Asteri Revolts. This only fired the flames of racism in Het. He went on to marry Esther dar'Ifrit, the daughter of a wealthy magnate from the Legations. Through his connections with Sorel and his own personal merit, Het earned a position as a 4th Grade Professor in 1903. Het and Esther had two sons and a daughter in quick succession, however Esther succumbed to Qarilik Fever in the summer of '07. Their children were sent to live with their maternal grandfather in Bandar Sedarjo. Het later went on several research expeditions to Mehmet, Asterdan, and Fanaglia, looking for examples of the daily lifestyles of the Horusi era. By 1908 he was a 2nd Grade Professor and on loan to Tagan College while studying several Fanaglian tribes.
Connection to Jackson Elias: He is a student of Sorel, a close friend of Elias. Het himself has worked with the man on several occasions, admiring his hands-on and self-made lifestyle. Het often remarks that Elias is one of the few people alive today that make society worth it.
Family: Het's parents are long dead in the war. He has no surviving siblings. His wife died of disease in 1907 and his children live in the legations with their maternal grandparents. He has two sons and a daughter.
Notable Skills: Marksmenship, Tracking, Mendean Languages
Languages Spoken: Mendean, Tsirkasian, Modern Mehmeti, Qarsi, Erebiq(Northern), Cynfelian
Experience with Supernatural: While serving in the Qarilik Campaign, Het saw many practices of the ancient tribes of the area. While he is loath to give any of their 'barbaric' practices any credit, he could not dismiss them without attempting to understand them. Many of the practices he saw were mere bunk. Folk Medicine and mystic voodoo. However some of the tribes in the most remote and savage parts of the jungle performed acts he could not explain. While hunting an Asteri company, a young tribal boy walked past Het and his team. He seemed to emerge from the very wood of the trees. Shocked, one of the teammates attempted to stab the lad with his machete. A vine from the tree happened to breeze into its path, blocking the machete. The boy then melted back into the woods. Another time, a young girl was seen walking into the river. The team was shocked, going into the river meant a horrific death. Yet she emerged unscathed on the other side. No Gharial or Crocodile attacked her, nor did the ravenous slaughterfish.

The IC is up and ready to go. First few posts should be about generally arriving in Klippenstaad, chatting with other members of the team (if you're there as part of the team), or otherwise establishing your motivations for being there and trying to find Jackson Elias.

If you have questions about the scenery or other things related to the city of Klippenstaad, ask The Biosyn for information.

Also, Fanaglia, Inoroth, and Biosyn, your characters are accepted. I'll add them to the OP of both the OOC and the IC.

Looking at Faisal Teck now -- the rest of y'all need to finish your applications!

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality: Sevia has been a curious person for most of her life, often going out of her way or even avoiding her tasks to go off on her own to investigate her newest question.
Likes: Reading, libraries, Dueling (non-lethal), Swimming, Philosophical debates
Dislikes: Being called a savage, Arrogant people, Razonican nobility
Fears: Bears, drowning
Goals: To defend her people against claims of savagery by becoming a world-known scholar
Personal Strengths: Hardworking, creative, empathetic
Personal Weaknesses: Cannot let go of an insult against her tribe, not good at survival skills
Mental Problems (if any): None
Sanity Assessment: Sevia is a rational woman, everything has an answer. That is, so long as she has a moment to collect herself. Despite her upbringing in a Razma tribe, Sevia is oddly afraid of wild animals but not of humans. In her mind, a person, even if armed, is still a rational being that can be reasoned with, whereas a wild thing knows nothing about its limits or even of its own existence. Humans will run away if properly fended off, but a beast will never run until it is dead or it has murdered a sentient being.

BACKGROUND

Great War-specific History: Her father was killed in the war and her mother soon passed from a sickness that took her after they lost their house and a source of income. However, Sevia never knew of true poverty, shortly after her mother's death she was adopted by a Razma woman.
History: Sevia was never too good at "being a Razma". Sevia's childhood was one of moderate comfort and never required her to do anything beyond study. When she was forced to learn how to hunt and survive in the woods with the Razma, Sevia proved sorely unable to do so. Once she proved completely useless for manual tasks, Sevia was given to the bards, sages and priestesses to educate. A devout Unionist, Sevia refused to accept the Razma religion and proved unable to be a priestess or sage. She was also awful at playing music and so could not become a bard. In the end, the tribe simply decided to just let her research their history and record it so that the Razonicans could understand the tribal ways better. Though, she was not truly considered a Razma, and could not sharpen her incisor teeth to symbolize her membership. This also meant that she could not get the tribe to fund her education.

Razma must prove themselves by killing a bear in single combat to be a full member of the tribe during the Young Hunt. Sevia was written off as a woman who would never pass the Young Hunt. However, at 18, she took up a bow, shield, and spear and climbed to the top of a mountain to hunt a bear down. In the morning, she came down the mountain holding the head of the bear, fur, and some meat of the bear. Unknown to her tribe, she lured the bear into a trap and stabbed it until it died, a cowardly way to fight in the Young Hunt. Still, the bear managed to rake her left shoulder with its claw, leaving large scars.

Connection to Jackson Elias: While attending the University of Seldal, Sevia met Jackson Elias. He had come to do a brief study of the Razma people for the international community and wanted to find someone who could act as a guide. The guide was to be a college student or professor who could write the best essay about the Razma and their Raz and Raedir cousins in Razonica. Sevia wrote an essay and was personally selected by Elias for her surprisingly vast knowledge of the Razma and Razonican cutlures. Sevia agreed, though did not reveal she was Razma until he'd already hired her and taken her to the Razma lands with him in order to prove to him that the Razma were not as savage as the world believed. To her relief, Elias was mildly amused at her witty trick.
Family: Her tribe
Notable Skills: Strong writer, good with people
Experience with Supernatural:[/box] Sevia believes, deep down, that the bear she killed was evil. Though, she can't figure out why an animal could actually actually understand what evil was and pick it unless it was sentient.

BASIC INFORMATION

Name: Higa Kenkichi
Age: 47
Gender: Male
Photo ID:
Image

Citizenship: A citizen of the Clockwork Empire; a 'Clockie', or more accurately a Korrukkan.
Affiliation (Museums, gangs, societies, etc): Journalistic Unions and Writing Guilds/Book Clubs. He keeps a casual correspondence with all surviving members of his old Great War unit; the 1st Toyone Grenadiers.
Rank (If military): Captain of the 1st Toyone Grenadiers during the Great War.
Occupation: Freelance Journalist and an occasional novelist.
Wealth: Fluctuates immensely on his capabilities to sell stories to newspapers, but a series of lucky breaks have left him with a comfortable $3,100 at hand. Familial investment in West Pahadan Rail has left him with a steady trickling investment income of around $300/month.
Equipment/Weapons:
  • Suit (as seen in picture)
  • Spare suit
  • Three shirts and two smart trousers
  • Accompanying shoes
  • Shihoki Captain's Sword (A wakizashi)
  • Standard Service Rifle of the Clockwork Empire during the Great War, with 4 rouns.
  • Toiletries
  • Pocket mess kit (cutlery, crockery, flasks, etc)
  • 3 notepads
  • 7 pens. Exactly 7.
  • A camera and its accompanying tripod and case.
  • Two different hats; a fedora and a trilby.
  • 3 cartons of cigarettes, two cigars and his pipe and its kit.
  • A lighter engraved with his initials.
  • All of Elias' books except for The Black Power, which he has yet to read.
  • His own work in progress novel, which seems to serve as a window into the experiences of the Clockwork's military during the Great War. As yet untitled.
  • A typewriter and two replacements for all its keys and over 200 sheets of paper.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE

Personality: Calm and friendly, with an ease of speaking that's quite relaxing to listen to. A perfectionist in many regards and meticulous in his writing, often prone to writing and scrapping and writing again. Kenkichi, however, harbours immense resentment and regret. His perfectionist attitude in his work masks a man he believes died in the Great War. Within, he despises Ibrahama and its people, even though he understands its wrong -- because Ibrahama robbed from him. Furthermore, he's a slight hypocrite in his views on pleasure. He eschews alcohol as a coping mechanism for trouble and sexuality as carnal brutality but is adamant in his 'smokes'.
Likes: Writing, people who fought in the Great War, reading, cigarettes, cigars and pipes and his home state of Shihoki.
Dislikes: Ibrahama, people who didn't -- but were able to -- fight in the Great War, excessive violence, alcohol, people who don't appreciate good books and 'carnal actions'.
Fears: Women who hit on him, men who hit on him, fire, gas and incredibly loud noises.
Goals: To become renowned enough to form his own newspaper in the Clockwork Empire, to achieve a truly 'ground breaking story', to overcome his irrational and emotional dislike of Ibrahama.
Personal Strengths: A good writer (unlike me, haha), a good shot and a completionist.
Personal Weaknesses: Completionism to a fault, a bit too within his own world ("the story is all that matters!")
Mental Problems (if any): Obsessive compulsive disorder and being unable to manage his emotions effectively.
Sanity Assessment: Despite that, he's still very much sane. He might be prone to a bit of a ramble about the war, but he's managed to pour himself into his work to take the brunt of the trauma he might have received. Writing is therapeutic to him and an ever increasing desire to "reveal stories" has driven him.

BACKGROUND

Great War-specific History:
Kenkichi was a sergeant when the Great War broke out. Quickly organised into his home city's unit, the 1st Toyone Grenadiers, a succession of battles and campaigns saw the would-be journalist rise to the ranks of captain for the unit. A mixture of merit and the death of all the previous captains in assaults and defences along the Ibrahaman front led to this position. It was on the front that Kenkichi began his bottled dislike for the nation of Ibrahama; as he took on an attitude of parental responsibility for his unit. Each command from his superiors was acted with immense hesitation -- for how many men would die in the assault? This mentality culminated when a Korrukkan counter attack presented a 'safe' opportunity and calling forth the men, ordered the grenadiers to join the assault. When his younger brother was counted as one of the casualties of he only marginally successful assault on Ibrahaman positions, Kenkichi became distraught agitated and his detest had set in. The war however did teach him skills of survival, taught him how to shoot and would go on to give him the experiences he would aim to craft into his book. The stories of the men in the trenches and on the field also drove him to search for stories to report on
History:
Kenkichi was born in the city of Toyone, in the Shihoki region of the Clockwork Empire on the 1st of July, 1863. His father was a school teacher and his mother a volunteer nurse at their hospital. Their modest living let Kenkichi grow up in an educated environment were he predominantly learned linguistics, language and literature. This, as we can see, would go on to shape his career. He developed a passion for literature and reading from this early age and would often frequent the city's multiple libraries as a source of enjoyment.

When Kenkichi completed his studies and school work, his family did not have the monetary funds to send him to a university. Distraught with himself, at the age of 21 he aimed to take the Taebong Civil Examination but failed. Again, angry and distraught he signed up to the Clockwork Empire's military in a rare split second decision. 8 years in the military led him to the position of sergeant on the eve of the Great War and his inspiring letters and tales of a rose-tinted honour for the homeland led his brother, 4 years his junior, to join him in the field.

As above, the Great War saw Kenkichi rise to the ranks of Captain of the 1st Toyone Grenadiers and the familial tragedy that transpired from that. When the Great War ended after six years, the Higa family was down a son -- buried in a mass-grave somewhere in the Clockwork/Ibrahama border. The remaining son was a shell of a man, who would only delve into the journalism and newspapers that arrived in the Empire at the turn of the century. Lost and unsure, Kenkichi began to take his experience with writing and literature to become one of these 'journalists' -- and a freelance operative selling their stories for profit seemed like an adventurous enough life for a former soldier. Not as mundane as teaching, but not as dangerous as being shot at. His ventures and searching for stories, even abroad, have let him meet an interesting cast of characters. This includes the balloonist Delatte, who recently contacted him about Elias -- a mutual friend.
Connection to Jackson Elias:
Kenkichi met Elias when he traveled to Unmeikyo. Seeing an opportunity to write an interesting account on this well-known visitor and to get an indepth analysis of a clearly interesting man, Kenkichi was able to approach him at a bar and inquire about him. Writing about him with interest and gusto, the two became correspondents at the very least - Kenkichi was so enthralled by his character he purchased his books. The journalist also writes to Elias whenever he is especially motivated by something he finds in his home, keeping time in his weeks and months to inquire and look for the occult within his home; usually to little to no avail.
Family: Of his original family unit of his father, mother and younger brother -- only he and his father remain. His youngest brother died in the Great War and his mother died of an illness shortly after its end.
Notable Skills: Writing, investigation, inquiring, marksmanship.
Languages Spoken: Onghiri, Hanchiyuan and speaks a passable but heavily accented Rothian.
Experience with Supernatural:Not exactly any experience at all, except the minor belief that during the Great War he was saved from a gas-attack by a manifestation of his ancestor throwing his gas-mask to him.

Missing Skills and Strengths, but that's a sufficient application to get posting. Fanaglia and Inoroth's characters are already waiting for Teck on the airship.

Seems a bit high on the mental stability ranking, but that's a subjective assessment anyway so otherwise fine. Accepted. Please join Fanaglia and Inoroth's character onboard the airship. Fan's already discussed how you could have joined the expedition via Discord.

Notable Skills: Strong writer, good with people
Experience with Supernatural:Sevia believes, deep down, that the bear she killed was evil. Though, she can't figure out why an animal could actually actually understand what evil was and pick it unless it was sentient.

An unusual but comprehensive story about the bear. Accepted, but with two caveats --

1) You need to have a reason for arriving in Klippenstaad, the capital of Varenhold. A number of Eiren characters have a connection via a Fanaglian university, and some are born in Klippenstaad, or have other reasons for being in Klippenstaad that allow them to 'hook in' to the plot easily. Sevia needs a reason as well, but I'd prefer it be more than 'Jackson Elias contacted her'. Let me know if you're struggling to come up with ideas for how to realistically do this, and I or Biosyn (the Varenhold player) will help you out!
2) It's an expedition of egghead academics and nouveau riche; I'm 100% okay with Sevia getting irritated at their arrogance, so long as it's not overly disruptive to the expedition. Which is to say, feel free to snark and such, but make sure Sevia is doing more than just snarking. I've seen you RP, so I'm confident in your abilities. Just wanted to say it anyway.

Accepted, so long as you -- like Sevia -- have a rationale for being in Klippenstaad that doesn't involve Jackson Elias directly contacting you to summon you.

Two questions:

1) How did he collect all of these bullet wounds? All during the GW? Post-war operations? Both?
2) Is he allowed to take his mask off if it's necessary for infiltration, or does he always pose as non-government Drachenvolk?

Neither of these are essential for your application, just curiosity on my part. Accepted. If I'm understanding our discussion correctly, you'll be skulking the streets of Klippenstaad until you meet up with the Expedition Team once they arrive to see Mr. Jackson Elias.

1) Most of his injuries were during the Drachenstaat Civil War, particularly as part of why he detests large open spaces.
2) Egil can and will take off and store his mask when doing infiltration operations.
