Mostly just for reference both writing and visual. I don't see myself owning an Auto capable rifle/carbine unless it's an FAL style. Mostly because the FAL family are rather brutal on full auto.

That's a pre-86 price point so no license required.
Pre-86 MG's in general can usually be had for several thousand less than the normal online asking price if you spend a bit of time looking and find a local in state seller. It's not all that uncommon to see M-10's and M-11's go for $4,000-$5,000 in such sales compared to $7,500+ online.

I thought you needed a license for automatics.

Na famalam, lemme break this shit down cuz a lot of people still believe that myth.
In 1934 Congress passed the National Firearms Act that regulated several types of guns, including automatics. To own an NFA item you had to pay a $200 tax, register the item, have a background check done and get approval from your local Chief Law Enforcement Officer (in the past couple of years this was amended to only requiring you to notify the CLEO that you purchased an NFA item) and then you could have it. In 1968 Congress passed the Gun Control Act which had some NFA stuff in it which largely banned "non-sporting" firearms from import which largely killed the foreign machine gun market with the exception of what are called Pre-86 Dealer Samples, these guns are generally machine guns that were imported by someone with an FFL after 1968 but unlike Post-86 Dealer Samples they can be kept once the FFL holder gives up their license however when they're sold they can still only go to another FFL holder.
In 1986 and under very shady circumstances Congress added something called the Hughes Amendment to the Firearms Owners Protection Act which banned all new additions to the machine gun registry once the clause took effect later that year but didn't impact guns that were already on it which can still be freely bought and sold. There's roughly 165,000 such machine guns on the registry that legally anyone who can own a gun can buy at the federal level provided they go through the NFA steps and fill out the proper forms and pay the tax and whatnot.
Finally we have Post-86 Dealer Samples which are machine guns made after 1986 and can only be held by people with either an 07/02 manufacturers FFL or an 01/03 dealer FFL. 07/02's can freely make as many new machine guns as they want on ATF Form 2's but they cannot be kept once the license is given up and they must either be transferred to another eligible FFL or destroyed as per ATF regulations.

So long story short, any automatic weapon from pre-1968 can be purchased without a license, like the M16, AR-10, FAL, etc.

1986, but yes. Prices for rarer things can reach into the tens of thousands because of the small market but more common things can be had for just a few thousand with a bit of looking and patience.

Yes.
The guy who runs this site is one of the best in the business and while his prices are usually on the higher end it shows some of the stuff you can buy.
