It turned out that the bye day after the crunching defeat to Darmen was exactly the tonic that the Fleftic Quidditch team needed to return to winning ways against Taeshan. The Fleftic team took their bye day and used it as an opportunity to watch Taeshan take on the Free Republics, and both the coaching staff and the players themselves took notes of how both Taeshan and the Free Republics played, as they were the only teams that the Fleftics were still left to play. The Fleftics took notes of the strategies that the Free Republics used as they romped to a 210-70 victory over the Purple Knights. They also took notes of the Taeshan playstyle as it had been quite effective in giving the Purple Knights the lead until the Republican Seeker snagged the Snitch from practically beneath the nose of the referee, who was keeping his utmost best to not react to the presence of the Golden Snitch right underneath his nose and tip off the Seekers of both teams. Something about being an impartial sporting judge and all that.

Having gathered their notes, the Fleftics went back to their allotted training ground and began carrying out drills and tactics specifically designed to counter Taeshan's own tactics, and it was this intense and specific training that would pay off very greatly for the Fleftics. Kaley Castanas and Greg Santos got the Fleftics off to a good start with three quick goals in the space of two minutes, and while Taeshan were able to respond with two goals from Richard Owlet and Alejandro Swann, it was clear that it was Abanhfleft who held the advantage for the entirety of the game. Taeshan were able to pull themselves level and put the scores at 50-50, but after that Abanhfleft went on a five-goal streak in which the Purple Knights were simply unable to answer. The Fleftics had figured out the Taeshan tactic of spreading the play from one wing to the other if it was becoming obvious that attacking down the side or the middle was not working too well for them.

Papito Banaldo was having his fair share of the fun as well, sending Bludgers towards the Chasers and even sometimes the Seeker when he was feeling a little bit bloodthirsty. Yuri Polyakov, himself not the most combative of Seekers playing the game, also got in on the action by performing a Wronski Feint that actually and absolutely bamboozled his opposite number from Taeshan. Polyakov managed to pull up from the feint just in time, but his opposite number Ollivander Williams was not so fortunate, and while he didn't smash into the ground as many other victims of the Wronski Feint were wont to do, the tail of Williams' broom still caught on the ground and forced him to flip over and over until he was finally stopped by the roughness of the grass. A treatment of barrels upon barrels of Skele-Gro is the only option for him.

Yuri Polyakov took the time that the treatment of Ollivander Williams had given him to continue his search for the Snitch, although he was unsuccessful in pinning it down until the time that Taeshan's replacement Seeker took to the air. The morale hit that Taeshan took following the loss of Williams also afforded Abanhfleft the opportunity to go on their aforementioned five-goal streak through (mostly) Greg Santos and Kaley Castanas, and as soon as Castanas had thrown the Quaffle through the hoops for her fifth goal of the game, Polyakov saw the Snitch loitering just above the middle goalpost, and he swooped in to collect the 150 points and the victory for the side in blue, orange, and green.

NEW HEIGHTS FOR FEARLESS FALCO
WIN SETS 'VIOLAN SIGHTS ON GROUP DECIDER
VALDIVIOLA 180* - 80 PARCIA

A simple victory over Parcia at the World Cup sees Valdiviola top of Group B and favourites to win the group going into the final matchup with the GNP. Delfina Savoia strengthened her bid for a starting place in the crunch match with a hat-trick against Group B bottom side, winless Parcia. Hers was the standout performance in the Quaffle game as Parcia outscored La Viola thanks to some tricky manoeuvring by Parcian Chasers against a disinterested Valdiviolan attack.

As Evangelina Falco claimed yet another Snitch to take the win for her team, her teammates appeared to be thinking less of the game at hand and more about ones to come. For Falco, however, this catch will be considered a warning to the rest of the World Cup contenders as to the prowess that she brings with her to every game. A sixth Snitch in a row in World Cup matches and this one was a real spectacle - soaring high 50 feet above the Quaffle game to dismount for the snatch and then re-mount 20 feet lower, Snitch still in hand. Her World Cup tally now reads as 10 Snitch captures.

With qualification guaranteed, attentions will turn to the last group matchday where Valdiviola face rivals The Gathered Nations of Privateers. No doubt the trickiest fixture of the group for La Viola, The GNP have outplayed most Group B teams and most definitely live up to their reputation as being a team of pirates. Especially daunting are Beater pair Cassius and Leon Thump-Thump who tend to pick on a teams strongest player and target them. Erasmo Burrasca may have to be at his best to keep Falco out of danger if La Viola are to come away as group winners for the second World Cup in a row. Hopefully, GNP Bludger tactics may allow Valdiviola's imperious Chasers to finally find form and get a decent number of goals on the board.

Player Ratings: Nobile 4/10, Peloso 5/10, Fiore 5/10, Savoia 8/10, Febbraio 5/10, Loretto 4/10, Falco 9/10

We are in the common room of the Percyvale Academy again. The seven players of Kriegiersien who played against Starblaydia are sitting in unusual silence. Most are looking into their books.

Skull Dodgery comes in. Kraven looks up.

Kraven: Now, isn't that a rare honor? You can spare time for us?

Skull Dodgery: Hi Gang. How did the game against our host work out? Did you lose?

Tim: Gang? Don't you read the news? We won.

Skull Dodgery: Aw, you younglings, always sitting over your books and papers, in my times we talked about things with each other.

Tim: Younglings? Are you sure you are the eldest? I guess Adhan could tell you something about age.

Adhan turns a page in a rotten looking book.

Adhan: Yes, and we already used books back then. Just because you are too dump to read doesn't mean it's new witchcraft.

Kraven: Speaking of Magic. My plan worked.

Tim: No! It didn't.

Kraven: It did.

Skull Dodgery: What plan?

Kraven: I used an amulet to put a powerful modified levitation simulation spell on it, with the size of the pitch. I stayed mostly in the middle of the arena to secretly bring it on extreme high mountain level. Or to be more precise, only the feeling of enormous height, not really levitating anything. We took high altitude potions to be prepared for these highs. But the Starblaydians weren't prepared for that. Thanks to the purple robes the blue and purple turning faces of our opponents, as result of the altitude sickness, wouldn't be that apparent. And it worked. They really looked and played much weaker.

Tim: No it didn't. Your spell was useless. And you only sitting in the middle and sometimes throwing around bludgers was not helpful.

Kraven: I know it worked. Our triumph is proof.

Tim: Bogus. We won because the rest of us played better. Even Rink. And of course Anora caught the snitch.

Imoen: However, the game was great. We had a draw, I made the 110 equalizer, going around the keeper, a bludger from Adhan taking out this spectacled guy who wants to stop me, and I scooore. And then Anora..

Skull Dodgery: Fascinating. Anora, could I have a word with you in private?

Anora looks over the edge of her book.

Anora: Ok.

The two find themselves an empty space with some beverage.

Skull Dodgery: Can you get me a Golden snitch from the match?

Anora: I try that every game, not only for you, my skinless darling.

Skull Dodgery: I mean, can you get me one after the match?

Anora: We have to give them back. I don't think that I want to risk our disqualification.

Skull Dodgery: But would you smuggle one out?

Anora: How? And why should I do that?

Skull Dodgery scratched his chin.

Skull Dodgery: I may have found a buyer for one, who would give me an incredible sum for it.

Anora: How much are we talking about?

Skull Dodgery shows her a note.

Anora: Holy moly. Who pays so much for a snitch? And why? What the…

Skull Dodgery: Details that should not concern you. If you help me get one, you'll get 10% of the sum.

Anora: Sure. More like 50%. It is my risk first.

Skull Dodgery: Don't be silly. My job, my plan, my execution and contacts.

Anora: Without me you can get one from a souvenir shop. But I guess that is not an option?

Skull Dodgery: It has to be one played in the tournament. I surely can get one from someone else pricier. 20%. Last chance.

Anora: 40.

Skull Dodgery: Ok, you get your 25%. I have a possibility to duplicate the snitch immediately after the match when I get my fingers on it. We switch them in a handshake and you give the referee the fake one.

Anora: After we settled on 30% now - won't the replacement be noticed as such?

Skull Dodgery shows her a deadly stare, but Anora stays strong. He takes a sip and nods.

Skull Dodgery: I am sure it will be. Later. But at the right moment, if everything works out. You do your job. Catch the snitch, get it to me so that we can swap it. Done.

Anora: Deal. Still… doesn't it have to be a snitch from an important match? Best the final? That makes no sense to me.

Skull Dodgery: Don't worry your little head, too many details only produce problems. You are overpaid anyway. Let's go back to the team.

Coming back to the table, most of their teammates are still immersed in their books.

Skull Dodgery: Friends, I am back. The next match I will play again.

Tim: Oh, how generous. But maybe we don't need you anymore. Rink did a good …

Rink: Oh, thank gods, I am happy to be at the sideline again.

Skull Dodgery: Then it is settled. Let's beat Likar.

Zwangzug held off a Kiaser Colonies enclave team. Despite fan buzz, Hrafnhildur Lúthersdóttir was mostly absent from the scoring action; however, Peder Ruud was a threat with the Beater's bat, pelting his opposite numbers and nearly sending Mauno Forrest-Alston spiralling off his broom during one evasive maneuver. Andrea Gallagher recorded a consecutive trio of goals before youngster Sonja Berg pulled the opposition back into the game.

Encyclopaedia of Mountainous Magical Jargon, Part 5

Criminal Justice: Although the use of Dementors is anathema, Zwangzug does have a small rehabilative justice center known as The Roundabout for the magical community, where convicted prisoners are closely guarded. It is located in the Rackham Range, not far from the No-Maj city of Sandwirt.

Occasionally pundits will propose research into whether it would be possible to forcibly remove serious criminals' magical abilities to prevent them from reoffending. This has never been seriously considered to public knowledge, in part because of concerns about wrongful convictions and in part because it would arguably be punting the problem into the No-Maj community.

Journalism: The Fraternal Phoenix, based out of the FTC, is considered the "paper of record" for the magical community, but of course competing outlets exist. The Monthly Mage, published in the southeast, is somewhat of a trade journal with many advertisements for the newest potions and reputable herbs. Modana, from the southwest, serves the non-Anglophone community, and the Journal of Mystical Innovation, in the northeast, is an academic publication that publicizes new discoveries.

For one, the game between Abanhfleft and the Autonomous Region of Helsinki was a bit of an anticlimax. Everyone was expecting Abanhfleft to go up against the Free Republics in the Quidditch World Cup that they all forgot that there was yet another team whom the Fleftics were yet to play, and that was Helsinki. And it certainly didn't help matters that after a little bit of a Keeper showdown in which both teams' Keepers managed to stop the Quaffle from going into their respective goals, Yuri Polyakov snatched up the Snitch with only two minutes played to put a quick end to the game and ensure that Abanhfleft still has a fighting chance coming into the real last match of the group stage, which was now most surely and definitely against the Free Republics.

As a way to wind down before returning to training against the Free Republics, Cesar Banaldo, captain of the Fleftic Quidditch team and also known by the nickname "Papito", used his spare time to catch up on the Muggle sports of the day, such as football (or soccer as other people liked to call it). As the 80th Football World Cup was also being held in Starblaydia, Papito had mingled with the Muggle crowds gathered in Starblaydia for the World Cup. He knew that Abanhfleft had qualified for the World Cup by the skin of their teeth, and while he didn't believe that the team that had come to Starblaydia to compete on the biggest footballing stage in the multiverse was the right team for the task, he still supported the Lady Revolutionaries as they were Abanhfleft's representatives to the rest of the sporting nations of the multiverse, just like him and his team.

It just so happened that the World Cup match between Abanhfleft and Nephara had finished by the time Papito mingled with the Muggles, and since even though he liked Muggles he didn't trust their "technology" too much, he decided to learn of the result via the old-fashioned but trusted newspaper. In his head, Papito knew that there was no chance that Abanhfleft would ever defeat Nephara in a game of football, but his heart still wished for his team to win.

"Papito!" a familiar voice called out. Papito looked up from his newspaper and saw Greg Santos, Papito's teammate and Chaser of the Fleftic Quidditch team, looking back at him. "You follow soccer too?" Santos asked him as he sat down beside Papito. "I never would've thought you would be the kind of guy to follow soccer among all of us on the team! But how goes it, though? How did our team do? It was against Nephara, if I remember correctly. Did they win?"

"What do you expect?" Papito replied. "Of course they didn't! Abanhfleft doesn't win against Nephara! Abanhfleft never wins against Nephara!"

"Oh, come on, that's not true," Santos said. "I remember that we beat them 3-2 once in the World Cup itself."

"Sure we did, but that was a nothing match," Papito countered. "It doesn't mean a thing. We were already eliminated when we won against those green bastards, and the only thing we did then was we also eliminated those damned Nepharans."

"It wasn't a dead rubber, though," Santos said. "Anyone could have still qualified back then."

"Pah! It doesn't matter," Papito said. "All this means is that we are never ever going to win against Nephara whenever something is on the line for us. We scored the first goal at just fourteen seconds! Fourteen seconds, fam! And we still manage to lose to them 3-4! I can't believe this anymore. I just can't believe it. Fuck Nephara. Fuck Pasarga. Fuck all the teams that we can't ever beat in any sport ever. We're cursed against those teams, blud. We'll never ever win a game against Nephara or Pasarga as long as I breathe. I just... I'm done." And with that now off his chest, Papito folded the newspaper and left it behind on the bench as he stood up and walked away.

"I just wanted to know who won, you know," Santos called out, but too late; Papito had already Disapparated back to their training camp. Santos shook his head and picked up the newspaper and read the article about the Nephara-Abanhfleft game. "God, we really can't win against the green bastards, can we?" he finally managed to say once he was finished reading the article.

And the Quaffle was on.

On its way into the left ring. Skull Dodgery ignored the bludger hitting him and made the score 110 to 40. He looked around for a golden sign and what Anora was doing.

Anora hovered, arms folded, over the battlefield, closed eyes and spinning around from time to time. What looked quirky or disinterested to some, was her way to open her mind to the magic of the switch. And in that moment Skull Dodgery observed her (again, as he had done today for an awful lot), she suddenly opened her eyes and jumped into motion, dashing down.

She pushed aside the opponents seeker, which name she had forgotten or never heard of, followed her golden winged target on a looping course, until she reached the snitch near to the ground, closing her hand around it and got hit by something heavy.
She rolled around on the lawn while something hold her tight. When she came to hold, Skull Dodgery was lying on her. She needed a moment to recover from the shock, rearrange his face in her head to the normal, boring looking human and smiled.
“We shouldn't meet in the open anymore, darling.”
“I just thought I had to save you from a bludger or opponent player. Coparo”, he said, while taking her hand and helping her up.

The little crowd that was present cheered and the two waved happily grinning back to anyone looking, Anora holding up the snitch.

The obligatory common room of the Percyvale Academy. Anora and Skull Dodgery are sitting at a table.

Anora: So, when do we get the money?

Skull Dodgery: Patience. Despite all their ignorance, my clients may know when the tournament is over and I don't want them to be suspicious. I don't want to deliver them the snitch before it has ended and we are on our way home.

Anora: I really hope you don't want to cross me. And I hope they don't find out that the snitch is fake. At least not before we are gone.

Skull Dodgery: Don't worry, we won't be hold account for that, I have that planned out. We will all get our share in time.

Kraven and Tim suddenly show up.

Tim: If that isn't our pair of the match. Is their anyone you haven't seduced now, Anora?

Anora: Are you really jealous that you are the only one that I haven't slept with in this team?

Tim rolls his eyes while Kraven snorts.

Anora: Just kidding, I have my standards. It was just an accident on the field. Right skully? But we still won.

Tim: Have you seen our next opponent?

Anora: Razenthuria? These Lion guys? Yes.

Skull Dodgery: Doesn't look like anything to me.

Kraven: They have an interesting history.

Tim: I am more interested in their Quidditch team.

Anora: I heard their keeper is the daughter of muggles. And their beater Viktor K'Rum may be a world class seeker from another dimension. Oh and Julian Aboadei, their chaser, has an affair with their monarch.

She raises her eyebrows impish.

Tim: Where did you get these insane information?

Anora: From the yellow press. The Nude Wizard - Quidditch World Cup edition. They have colorful pictures and articles.

Tim: I see. In one hour team meeting. Then we will discuss how to beat them. On the field, not in headlines.

‭Changjun was feeling better after getting some rest, but flying an unfamiliar broom and relying on its magic as much as her own made her clumsier than usual. Dhamey still wasn't much help. He was getting marginally better with practice, but he still struggled to keep the bludgers out of his teammates' way.

‭Bonriel and the Burnside girls were among the best chasers the Sherpa team had faced yet. Tshering, Dawa, and Dai had trouble keeping the quaffle away from them, and Changjun had trouble keeping it out of the Sherpa goals. Soon the Haven had the lead. Luckily, Wangdi caught the snitch before they could widen their lead far enough to be insurmountable. Despite the rather arrogant and obnoxious way that Wangdi had claimed his position as seeker, he wasn't bad at it.

LA VIOLA WIN GROUP
VALDIVIOLA INTO WORLD CUP KNOCKOUTS
VALDIVIOLA 170* - 10 GATHERED NATIONS OF PRIVATEERS

In what was billed as the hottest ticket in Group B, two teams took to the skies hoping to land as group winners. After a brief exchange with the Quaffle, La Viola set out their stall early and took the lead with goals for Lola Febbraio and Isabella Loretto. The GNP were highly fancied coming in and pegged the group leaders back before Evangelina Falco swooped yet again.

In what has been a frequent sight at World Cup 8, Falco beat her opposite number to the Snitch and won the game for her nation. Celebrations began instantly as the team dismounted and embraced with smiles all round. Group winners again without their star Seeker breaking into a sweat.

With knockout qualification already assured, this victory rewarded this Valdiviolan team with a strong seeding position. The result of the draw sees the team face a rematch with Anthor in the Round of 16 which will delight coach Benedetto Azzardo as he continues in his quest for World Cup glory.

Player Ratings: Nobile 6/10, Burrasca 6/10, Fiore 6/10, Loretto 7/10, Febbraio 7/10, Strazza 6/10, Falcon 10/10

A relatively short match against North Prarie saw Zwangzug take second in the group and advance to the knockout stages, where they will begin by facing Juvencus, second in Group D. "It's been a thrill to meet other teams from around the world, but we're not done yet," claimed Gretchen Kohl-Muenler. "Juvencus are a relatively...homogeneous side, and we hope our diversity will be an advantage. With a variety of styles represented, we've gotten to know each other's strengths over the course of the group stage and hopefully we can bring out the best in each other."

Encyclopaedia of Mountainous Magical Jargon, Part 6

Automation: While house-elves were known in magical society's earlier days, they have gradually tended to earn their freedom and, in many cases unsure what to do with themselves, migrate to other, more traditional countries. This has not, however, made Zwangzugian mages any more fond of doing their own chores. The result has been a variety of magical devices (in many cases patterned off of No-Maj technology) designed to simplify homemaking, though in some cases they merely create a more abstract degree of complexity. Self-Charmed Washboards, for instance, while they often made laundering easier, tended to also create their own musical displays when not in use, often requiring hasty intervention to prevent curious No-Maj individuals from investigating.

Fashion: In many regards Zwangzug's magical society takes a somewhat utilitarian, if not outright modernistic, approach to dress. Warzenhund has no formal dress code, and students often wear jeans similar to their No-Maj counterparts. One trait that may distinguish wizards and witches is their absolute disregard for color coordination; outrageous combinations of oranges and purples are prevalent, as are bizarre stripes and patterns. Foreign Spectrespecs have recently made inroads.

Darmen marches into Knockouts undefeated

After winning the World Cup opener against Equestrian States, the Darmeni national Quidditch team has performed an exceptional feat and navigated its entire Group in an undefeated manner. Topping the likes of the Free Republics, Abanhfleft, and even more impressively, Taeshan over the next five games alerted the rest of the wizarding world that the Darmeni team is very much in form to defend their title from the last World Cup. Darmen's 230-10 victory over the Autonomous Region of Helsinki certainly highlighted their defensive prowess, with Beaters Murray Morley and Russell Forsyth keeping the Helsinki Chasers on the run for the entirety of what turned out to be a short match.

The 270-110 victory over Taeshan meant that Darmen evicted one of the better Quidditch teams in the multiverse from the knockout stage of the competition. Darmen will face the 4th placed team from Group D, Vakolicci Haven and Celeria, in its Sixteen of Sorcery match. The Havenic team went 3-3 in the Group Stage. Joining Darmen in the Sixteen of Sorcery are three other teams who topped their groups with undefeated records: Banija, Valdiviola and the Sherpa Empire.

LOLA LEADS WAY TO LAST EIGHT
VALDIVIOLA REACH WORLD CUP QUARTER FINALS
VALDIVIOLA 280* - 50 ANTHOR

Valdiviola took the next step in their quest for greatness last night as they beat Anthor in the first knockout round. La Viola entered the game in high spirits having qualified unbeaten having dispatched their opponents in the group stage thanks to a Snitch catch from Seeker Evangelina Falco. Delfina Savoia returned to the starting lineup as coach Benedetto Azzardo looked to attack from the off and his team certainly asserted themselves. The first 5 goals were shared between the Chasers in purple before captain Lorenzo Nobile was beaten for the first time.

Each of the three Violan Chasers had hat-tricks before Anthor would score again after Juliana Rake evaded an Erasmo Burrasca Bludger with more than a pinch of luck. Throughout the Group Stage, Valdiviola struggled to dominate with the Quaffle as they had managed to throughout World Cup 7, but against Anthor Isabella Loretto was back to her best and Lola Febbraio was exceptional in taking the scoreboard away from their opposition.

Needless to say, Falco wanted to leave the arena as the match winner again and yet again she did. With her team cruising towards an unassailable lead, Falco outwitted Anthor Seeker Dianne Spring with a neat feint to send the youngster off the scent whilst herself holding on to take yet another World Cup Snitch.

Next up for Valdiviola, Group A winners Banija who pose without doubt the toughest threat so far. Unbeaten so far, 'The White Lions' won their group fairly easily but had to come from behind against the Equestrian States in the last round so moral could have been lowered in the Banijan camp. La Viola on the other hand showed the Quaffle-play their fans have been waiting for and will be champing at the bit to return to the Starblaydian sky in the Quarter-finals.

Player Ratings: Nobile 7/10, Burrasca 5/10, Fiore 6/10, Loretto 8/10, Febbraio 10/10, Savoia 8/10, Falco 9/10

Guess what, it is the common room of the Percyvale Academy again. The Quidditchplayers of the Kriegiersien team are sitting together in different pairs around the room. Kraven and Tim are arguing.

Image
Kraven: Then I hit the keeper, he makes a somersault and tumbles spinning to the ground, his neck breaks when he reaches it. There the fight went on with half a dozen others, which I also killed. But enough of my escape story from the Prison of the Evil Lion Cult. Did you know that the Ghosts in Zwangzug...

Tim: Stop. If you give me one more history lesson I can check myself in a book, I am throwing your books and you into the next river. To the next match. Our counter tactic against Razenthuria was good, but against Zwangzug we really have to bring our play to the next level.

Kraven: I agree. If we are able to bring together their beaters with close formations, they entangle, we can dominate the field and score easily. They are not playing too aggressive.

Tim: We should play relaxed against them to save for more punch later. As long as we stand defensively, we should be able to win it, when Anora gets the snitch.

Kraven: But if we would rush them down, score over 150 points more, we could win it ourselves and put the pressure on them and away from Anora. Wouldn't that be a sight? With my new triangle attack…

Tim: Too complicated. Better if Adhan….

We are zooming to a table with Adhan and Shao, sitting relaxed with beer in their hands.
Image
Adhan: So we are all just Illusions in the end. Ideas of another mind or minds. All our actions, thoughts and what happens to us, done by the maker.

Shao: God?

Adhan: Not necessarily and not one alone. It could be the shared wet dream of puppies or a muggle with a pen in front of a book. I prefer the last one.

Shao: You believe we are just characters in a book written by an ordinary author?

Adhan: A bit more than that. We can even be changed and manipulated to a certain degree by other wordsmiths. And that mix defines our story. Two or more books interacting. A joint venture adventure. Multiplaying.

Shao: Involving there is no free will for us? No 'I think therefore I am' because it is all done by someone else? We are not real?

Adhan: Or by different entities. But yes, we are just stories.

Shao: So my thoughts are just what someone wants me to say, like “Bfgrlllz” or Censored. We are imprisoned in a .. play?

Adhan: Or a game. With someone rolling numbers in the background to bring the story into motion. Doesn't this make sense? All what is happening, this whole odd universe the mind of different confused people?

Shao: And… the results of the games here are just rolled dice, too? Without us really having a say or impact?

Adhan: Terrifying, right?

Shao: Who would write such a story and who would read it?

Adhan: Maybe there is for example one writing the story and history of Kriegiersien, one of Zwangzug. Or maybe hundreds or thousands of writers. And one rolling the dice for all.

Shao: Tsk. Where do you get this crazy ideas?

Adhan: Obviously by one of the beings writing the story. He makes me say it, because he thinks it is entertaining.

Shao: And if we just sit around and do nothing for a while?

Adhan: Then the scene is changed. And we become the background, like the tree in the forest, that makes no sound when it falls, if no one is near to hear it.

They both stare into the void, drinking from their beverage from time to time. We leave them, going to Anora and Imoen on the other side of the room.

Image
Imoen: Have you ever been in Zwangzug?

Anora: No.

Imoen: I would love to open a fashion shop there. They would be a good target for further, fresh input from the muggle world.

Anora: Ok.

Imoen: If we win the World Cup I could open a store over there and sell clothes as Champions. With sports wear from and for the winners!

Anora: Yeah, after we have beaten them in the Quarters. That will give some foreigner from a creepy nation good PR.

Imoen: Ah, we can make contact with some of the players here and integrate them into the business. Famous names, local heroes. Would you like to join me?

Anora: Me? Why, I have no idea how that works.

Imoen: You will learn it. My mother had a little wool shop. And I have ideas.

Anora: And do you have the money?

Imoen: The prize money as a start. And together we could really make it there. It is a nice country, believe me.

Anora: Maybe we should first concentrate on the coming matches and later come back to your other dream.

She stands up.

Imoen: Ok.

Imoen takes a book in her hand, “Stitching for Dummies”, while Anora leaves, passing by the table with Skull Dodgery, who is sitting silent, playing with two little orbs rolling around the fingers of his left hand, while Rink is talking to him.

Image
Rink: ..and then everyone suddenly called me Rink, even though my name is Mijou. Confusing, isn't it?

Skull Dodgery: A simple matter of Retcon after a change in reality. Occurs from time to time.

Rink: I don't understand.

Skull Dodgery: Me neither, but that happens to nomaj when they come to close to wizard reality, too. Complicated magic stuff, don't worry about it. Say, do you still have the connections to the press?

Rink: I know some people. Why?

Skull Dodgery: I may have a story for them. Of course anonymous. More details later.

Rink: What is it about, if I may ask?

Skull Dodgery: Muggels and theft of magical property.

A match marred by substandard refereeing was somewhat redeemed when even the struggling official could not dispute Bita Sarhaddi's catch of the Snitch. Prior to that, however, both sides were awarded many dubious penalties for "garish uniforms" (both teams), "inappropriate substitutions (mostly Juvencus, alleged to be fielding some players out of position), and "conduct unbecoming of the noble sport of warlocks" (mostly Zwangzug, picking their nose). Despite this, it was a relatively unbiased affair, since neither team seemed disproportionately hurt by the abrupt stops and starts. Zwangzug look forward to more competent oversight of their quarterfinal against Kriegiersien.

Encyclopaedia of Mountainous Magical Jargon, Part 7

Arts and Literature: Several of Zwangzug's mages have published great creative works, such as composer Hyacinth O'Maura and novelist Ferdinand Apia. That said, there is somewhat more of an overlap than might be expected between wizarding and No-Maj culture. Young witches and wizards in the southwest are almost as likely to grow up reading The Ashahnemas than their No-Maj counterparts, rather than specifically magical folktales (though this is not to imply that their interpretations are the same). Memoirist Eileen Welkin had to pay several fines for publishing some works of non-fiction in the No-Maj world, where they were invariably dismissed as poorly-written fantasy.

Identity: Vinelings who grew up in magical enclaves often dismissed the Consolidation entirely; if some No-Maj bigwigs claimed they were part of a country, they can say what they like, the reasoning went, but if they tried any funny business they'd get what was coming to them. Many vinelings did not deal in No-Maj currency at all and evaded (significant) tax responsibility this way; a few muttered something about helping their fellow citizens as they handed over sabaots every so often. Indeed, a few cosmopolitans interested in No-Maj sport were said to follow tournaments such as the World Cup and World Baseball Classic, marvelling at the performance of Zwangzug, only to then learn that they were in fact also Zwangzug citizens!

‭Changjun was nervous when she found out they were going to be playing Northwest Kalactin. She remembered how good their national baseball team had been in the World Baseball Classic. Namgyal, Dai, and Dawa were a little intimidated too. Dhamey's reaction was more like, "Where's Northwest Kalactin and who actually watches baseball?"

‭"Changjun's father is a ballplayer, your Grace," Tshering pointed out.

‭"I thought he played football," said Dhamey.

‭"Really, dude?" said Changjun.

‭"Okay, so I misremembered," Dhamey said defensively.

‭Dhamey and Changjun both went out on the pitch still feeling annoyed and embarrassed about the misunderstanding. That made it harder to stay focused, and the Kalactinian chasers were pretty aggressive. Luckily, Wangdi spotted the snitch early and made it a short a game, with the Sherpas winning 150-40.

‭The Haven's offense was just as effective as it had been when the Sherpas faced them during the group stage, and they were playing hard. Maybe they were embarrassed that their top professional quidditch players, chosen from well-established leagues with extensive training and state-of-the-art brooms, had lost to a team that consisted mainly of teenage aristocrats.

‭Tshering had made a conscious effort not to be snobby, so as not to offend the sensibilities of people who didn't believe in hereditary aristocracy. When he talked to anyone that wasn't Sherpa, he was always quite clear that he was here as a quidditch player first and foremost, and the fact that he was nobility should be considered an irrelevant bit of trivia. Wangdi and Dhamey weren't so egalitarian, and they had rubbed some people the wrong way. Tshering had overheard a few people complaining about their sense of entitlement and saying they needed to be taken down a peg.

‭And of course, there was nothing they could do about their age. If people were embarrassed to lose to a bunch of teenagers, then such was life.

‭The Haven was leading 50 to 40 when Bonriel came in to take a shot on goal. Changjun blocked it, but while she was distracted with keeping the quaffle out of the goal hoop, she didn't see Hentasi hitting a bludger her way. The bludger hit her from behind and knocked her off her broom. Dhamey (whose hair still had a few green streaks in it from his earlier experiments with potions) couldn't get there because he had narrowly missed flying into a pole that held up the lights above the pitch, lost his balance, and was still in the process of clambering back onto his broom -- trying not to fall in the process because it was a long way down. Namgyal was busy trying to chase off the Burnside girls. Changjun had fast enough reflexes to teleport to the ground in a flash of blue, rather than falling and suffering further injuries beyond the bruise from the bludger, but she still had a nasty bruise on her shoulder and the Haven still scored while she was retrieving her broom and getting back in the air.

‭Namgyal took it upon himself to pay back Hentasi with a bludger to the face. It took him a while to catch Hentasi off guard, but the seekers were taking forever to find the snitch, and eventually Namgyal found his moment.

‭In the meantime, both teams had scored some more goals, and the Haven was now leading 110 to 80.

‭Changjun spotted a flash of gold and yelled at Wangdi, "Behind you to your right!" He was looking the wrong way. "No, higher and further to the right!" Wangdi spotted the snitch and took off. Celene Burnside was coming in to score, but it wasn't going to matter. She got her goal in before Wangdi caught the snitch, and in fact there were another few seconds of quaffle play as Burnside and Dai fought for possession while the snitch dove off to the left and Wangdi went swerving after it -- but in the end Wangdi did catch the snitch and the Sherpas won 230 to 120.

‭After the game, Changjun went to the school nurse and she was thankful that she hadn't persuaded her parents to come to Starblaydia to watch the tournament. Her father was in Guangzhou right now. He was supposed to be pitching in a baseball game, but instead was watching rain splatter on the tarp that the grounds crew had spread across the field, while a colorful bouquet of umbrellas bloomed in the stands and the umpires discussed the weather. Her step-mother was at home looking after her half-brothers and half-sister. They had stayed home so that the boys wouldn't miss too much school. It went without saying that her biological mother wouldn't come. Her mother never approved of her doing anything athletic. In fact, Changjun had not even told her mother about the quidditch tournament, and she hoped it wouldn't get enough publicity for her mother to hear about it.

Zwangzug outlasted a determined Kriegiersien side to make their way to the semifinals. Though Tim and Imoen peppered the goalposts with excellent shots, and Zwangzug were held to a meager goal from Andrea Gallagher, Bita Sarhaddi was fortunate to emerge with the Snitch. In response, chaser Robert Gaposchkin announced that he was "the only member of this team stylish enough to negotiate with [Kriegiersien players] in fashion matters."

"Look, Enzo [Bartali] doesn't care what he wears as long as he can magic the stains out after getting spaghetti sauce over everything, and [Gallagher] just wants to stay cool during matches. She looks like a No-Maj athlete sometimes, can you imagine? As for Matthias [Vanderwaal], he's usually wandering around with his head in the clouds, you have to double-check that his cleats are on the right feet. I, however, am a wizard of class and sophistication, and would be most honored to bring Kriegierisen's style to our magical enclave regardless of the outcome of the competition."

An obviously irritated Gretchen Kohl-Muenler noted that "all our players can say what they'd like off the field, but we really need to keep our heads in the game when the whistle sounds. The Sherpa Empire are no slouches--they've got that mountainous tradition too, and they've certainly shown their discipline." In response, Gaposchkin declared her "a disappointing casualty of living so near Warzenhund, does she still think the school uniform look is getting it done? I mean, come on."

"I mean, maybe we could do something with Bita [Sarhaddi]'s robes," Gaposchkin mused, "unless that's like cultural appropriation or whatever." Upon being informed that, despite her command of Jojie and Swash, she does not know the Sherpa Empire's indigenous language, he was heard to gripe "so what's even the point."

Skull Dodgery: This is the big final.

Anora: But not of the Quidditch World Cup.

Skull Dodgery: Don't be sad, we will be rich. Rich as the Muggles.

He rings the door bell.

Anora: I hope so.

A voice answers from inside.

Skull Dodgery: We are ...oh, right. Password: A Kind of Magic.

The door opens and the butler of the mansion lets them in.

Skull Dodgery: Hi Oddsworth, a scotch for me and my colleague. I hope the four are awaiting us?

Oddsworth: In the small lounge.

They went into the room, where four men awaited them. One of the “twins” greeted them.

“Mr. Skull Dodgery, you have brought an acquaintance? I hope also the object?”

Skull Dodgery brought up a casket and put it on one of the tables.

“It is yours.”

All four man eagerly gathered around it, starring at it. After a while of tense and clueless examination one of them waved at a dark corner of the room.

“Grand Wizard, may you evaluate the object?”

A hooded figure appeared, creeped to the casket and opened it. He took the snitch, examined it and hissed:

“Yes. Very good. You have the prize of the game.”

“Can you show us some of its magic?”, asked the corpulent man.

“Of course. Sesamopo.”

Runes appeared on the Snitch and the mysterious figure tipped on one of them, directing the bound wings at the Butler.

“Oddswort, throw the scotch against the wall.”

The butler took the bottle in his hand and smashed it against the next wall.

“A mind control device. Fantastic.”, said the fat man.

“Of course it only works on muggles”, hissed the robbed figure.

“May I test it?”, asked one of the “twins”.

“If you wish.”

The man took the snitch, holding it in his hand, directing it at the thin gentleman of the four and flustered something to it. One second later the thin man poured the glas in his hand into his trousers and said “I am incontinent.”

“Perfect”, the other twin proclaimed, while the fat man snickered.

While the butler sweeped together the broken glass of the smashed scotch bottle in confusion, Skull Dodgery coughed silent.

“I hope you will have fun with it. Now the payment.”

“Of course”, the fat man said, presenting him a bag, while the thin man cursed in the background when he discovered his wet trousers.

“I bit you farewell then”, said Skull Dodgery and left with the money and Anora.

The hooded figure also opened a hand after they were gone.

“Against a small obolus I can make you all immune against the effect, if you wish”, he added.

All four opened their pockets for his offer and he murmured words to each of them after they had paid him.

When their last guest had also vanished, the four rejoiced.

“Now we can take over the government. All the important politicians and entrepreneurs in the nation and make them our puppets. If we use this artifact wisely. Unbelievable that this was a trophy In a big tournament for them. It looks so ...small … odd.”

“And the antennas look like wings.”

“Better don't fool around with it. Just use it as instructed. Oh and Oddsworth, I need new trousers.”, said the thin man.

They all raised glasses.
“May the Order of Phoenix rule Starblaydia!”

Outside of the mansion, close to a forest, Anora and Skull Dodgery stopped and opened magical looks that bound their brooms to a tree. Suddenly the hooded figure appeared out of the forest.

“Hi Imoen”, remarked Anora.
“How do you know that it is me?”, asked a stunned Imoen, showing her face.

“Maybe because of your voice and acting and because I am not a braindead muggle? So you two made the heist with these idiots?”

“Yes.” Imoen started chattering. “I made contact with them via a friend and told them that they could get a real powerful magical artifact. And then we started this charade with the snitch as allegedly prize and powerful artifact of the Quidditch Tournament. We deactivated the snitch and put some runes on it who have some neat mind control possibilities, at least for a while, then they vanish.”

“Why didn't we just bring them any object we found? A real cup or vase or sphere or whatever?”

“Oh, for the fun part”, grinned Skull Dodgery. “We have given the press some hints that muggles have stolen a snitch, with some manipulated pictures of the four buffoons being badly disguised at the World Cup. Soon the ministry of magic will pay them a visit and at least quickly wipe their memories after taking the snitch back. No one will know of our involvement and the silly world dominance plans of these Order of the Phoenix will shatter like our plans to win the World Cup.”

“Don't remember me of that. Order of Phoenix. Where have I heard that before?”

“That is an over complicated plan”, said Anora, shaking her head while taking her amount of the money.

“But it was fun and now: Home sweet home”, said Skull Dodgery, jumping onto his broom.

“I will watch the finals. I want to see if my future partners and countrymen do well in the world cup. At least win a bronze medal. Would be good for business”, said Imoen, taking out a Zwangzug flag.

----o-֎-o----

‭The Sherpa quidditch team were stunned at their own success. How could they make it to the final championship when they were so young and inexperienced?

‭Dhamey had realized by now that he had very little to do with the team's success, and that he was only there because he had teammates who were more talented than him. But he still was happy for them and planned to give it his all in the final match. He was talking to Namgyal saying, "What you've done for this team is incredible; don't be so humble just because you're a commoner. You deserve all of this," when they were interrupted by the arrival of Dhamey's parents and a retinue of courtiers. Even among wizards, the brightness of their silk robes and silver jewelry stood out. Because they lived in Jaipur, they had adopted the flamboyant attire that was popular in the South, and because they were high-ranking aristocrats, they had the money to be really flamboyant.

‭Dhamey was startled to see them. "Father, what are you doing here?" he said. "Don't you have work to do?"

‭"If you win the Cup, I want to be here to see it," said the Duke of Rajasthan. "I can take a day off for this." He gave Dhamey a hug and added, "I'm proud of you."

‭Dhamey blushed and smiled. "Thanks, dad. I didn't know you were going to come." He turned to his mother and hugged her too. "I'm so glad you're here!"

‭The duke smiled and said, "We brought some friends, too."

‭"Really? Who?"

‭Namgyal's parents and his brother came out from around a corner, and there was a lot of excited chatter and another round of hugs. "It was so nice of the duke to bring us here," said Namgyal's mother. "We wanted to be here for the whole tournament, but we couldn't afford the plane tickets."

‭Tshering's family showed up later in the day, with somewhat less fanfare. His father still wasn't that happy about Tshering playing quidditch, and it still showed, but he had grudgingly decided to come and support the team because he didn't want to be one of those irresponsible fathers that don't show up for their son's big game. Tshering's sister had come around to seeing why he thought quidditch was cool. She was fascinated with the exotic architecture, the festive atmosphere, the foreign wizards, the regalia of the different teams, the owls flying about, the sorcerous gadgets and unnatural pets that people carried around... "You were right about this whole quidditch thing," she said. "This is cool! You have to beat the Banijans!"

‭"Damn right, we have to beat the Banijans!" said Tshering.

‭It occurred to him that it'd be thoughtful to teleport back to the Empire and give the Dai and the Ihawa families a lift so they could watch the championship match too. The Dais were very appreciative. Kami Ihawa thought it was nice of him, and her children, Changjun's half-siblings, were delighted. Jamling Ihawa explained rather grumpily that it had finally stopped raining in Guangzhou, the Icefall Doctors and the Pirates were playing a double-header to make up one of the games that had been rained out, he needed to be there because he was pitching the first game, ‭and anyway, he was perfectly capable of teleporting himself if he wanted to. He had never gotten the hang of teleporting instantaneously the way Tshering and Changjun did it, but he had his own ways of getting around if he really needed to. "Oh, sorry," said Tshering. "I was so wrapped up in the World Cup, I didn't even think about it. I didn't think about whether you had a game today and I completely forgot you had your own magic. I don't know what I was thinking."

‭"I've heard stupider things, and I don't mean to be rude, my lord, but I really don't have time to talk right now," said Jamling.

‭Wangdi understood that his family couldn't come because they had too many other responsibilities. The imperial family wasn't going to zip off to Starblaydia to watch a sporting event, no matter what sport it was or how important the game was.

That's totally unrealistic ICly, but still pretty cool. Thanks for hosting, Star, and thanks to everyone else who contributed to the thread.
