This looks really, really cool. I think I'll put in an app.

Question about characters though: Do they all have to be a mage? I was thinking of making a rogue Red Dawn soldier who isn't very magic-focused. Would that make him irrelevant?

Your character doesn't have to be a mage, but not being a mage definitely puts them at an disadvantage. Some things a non mage could be is a politician, head of a house, counter revolutionary etc. You could be vital member of a faction, which always makes things interesting. You wouldn't be totally irrelevant, it just depends on how you manage your character.

NS Name: The Krogan
Family/House Name: Megalostrata
Insignia/Symbol (optional): A many headed Hydra rising from a crimson sea.
Motto (optional:
Faction Alignment: Neutral, they look out for their own best interests first
Elemental Affinity (what element does this family specialize in, if any?): Water Manipulation, specializing in salt water environments. Though Nullification magic is not elemental the Megalostrata are the founders of it and the foremost experts in its use.
History:

Three hundred years ago the Megalostrata Clan was like most other families living among the Adriat Islands, poor farmers or fisherman, part time pirates, and had far to many mouths to feed. This all changed when Gylippos Megalostrata, the first of the clan to attend an academy of magic, discovered Nullification Magic by accident while fooling around with some friends. While his his intellect and above average affinity for magic had gotten him into the academy, his discovery and refinement of his ability to nullify magic was what put his name into the history books. Gylippos, having graduated and moved back to his home island, along with the rest of the Megalostrata quickly took advantage of this newfound magic of their's, ascending to prominence among what where then several island nations off the coast of Cagia. Historians would later point out with great interest how fast the loose collection of blood related families that made up the Megalostrata Clan were able to coalesce and militarize themselves.

Using Gylippos' knowledge from the academy, many within the family able to use magic gained rudimentary skills in its use and its application for violence. They made their first move within the criminal elements of Adriat society, expanding their smuggling, piracy, and their ability to conduct organized crime in general. By the end of Gylippos' life the Megalostrata had established their interests throughout most of Adriat society, in both the legal and illegal aspects. Their roots growing deeper and deeper with each passing year, expanding even on to mainland Cagia. Fast forward to current times those roots have only grown to further depths, the Megalostrata know a common facet of life on the Adriat islands and in many of the port cities of Cagia. With members ranging in occupation from Admirals to politicians to poets, one would say that the many headed hydra symbolizing their Clan is quite appropriate.

Additional Information: The Megalostrata were a driving force behind the creation of the Semi-Autonomous Region of Adriat within the Cagian Commonwealth. Realizing that the current state of near lawlessness and disunity among the island nations was starting to cost them more money than it was worth, the Megalostrata Clan began a grand undertaking to stabilize the islands through their accumulated wealth and power. Not only would they get massive returns for this long term investment it protected them from the inevitable war with the disgruntled Cagian Commonwealth when the second phase of the plan was put into motion.

The people of the Adriat Islands had long plagued the surrounding trade routes, and the mainland itself, with piracy. While kingdoms prior to the Commonwealth had tried their hands at invasions and anti-piracy campaigns all had failed for several reasons. The powerful and now well established Cagian Commonwealth though could provide a real threat to the islands if it could gather a unified force from the mainland. To dissuade the Commonwealth from conducting a war that would be extremely costly to both sides the Megalostrata conducted a successful political campaign that promised a stable and prosperous Adrait Islands to the Commonwealth if given time. While the process was not easy and costed more than a few lives the Megalostrata and other like minded islanders were able to achieve this goal, for the most part. The Adriat Islands are still widely known for their less then legal enterprises, but with the Cagian Commonwealth benefiting they have little to complain about.

The Adriat Islands also contribute a great deal to the Commonwealth's naval power and can field significant amounts of privateers in times of war.

I want to ask: what would be the limit for esoteric magic before it could be considered too powerful even for being the most powerful kind of magic?

I would make the limit at magic that would make you virtually invincible and omnipotent. For example, time stopping magic, although Esoteric, would be way too OP. Even the Devil's Whisper technique kind of treads the line at being over powered, but due to its restrictions, I would allow it. The more powerful Esoteric magic is, the more drawbacks it must have in order to balance out. I would not allow any invulnerability magic or reality changing magic either

The shadow assassins are esoteric. That’s one of their main perks.

Edit: Also Asardia, would generating a strange black and red lightning that easily penetrates through almost any defense be too op (even though that’s probably not what I’m going to go with). The drawbacks would be using it tires him out and the power is incredibly unpredictable, with him not even really controlling what it does or where it goes unless he really focuses.

I'm not aiming for making another Shadow Assassin, but more of a regular assassin if I go down the non esoteric path.

In fact, I have this idea of making an esoteric mage with powers that are completely useless in combat situations (Think of Biscuit's nen ability, if you've seen Hunter x Hunter)

I'm kind of mixed on this one. What are the objects/defenses that the lightning can't penetrate?

It seems Nullification Magic would best be classified as Esoteric Magic, since it's unique to the Megalostrata. Would you agree with that? Anyway, House Megalostrata is accepted.

I was actually wondering about that, I was thinking that it can exist outside of Megalostrata but is very rare and no other family or individual has cultivated it as successfully, thus having a monopoly on it. I was also thinking that it is an ability a person is born with and can't be taught to anyone who does not posses the natural affinity for it. Does that still count as Esoteric Magic?

It does. Although Esoteric magic is defined as unique to a mage, it can be unique to a family and very rare. Kind of similar to the Kekkei Genkai from Naruto

Cool, also for clarification is elemental magic performed similar to what is done in Avatar or do we use spoken spells and such to manipulate the elements?

From what OP has said, it varies. Some things like the Devil’s Whisper has to be spoken, while others don’t.

Elemental magic specifically doesn't require spoken spells.

Also, I've been thinking about the idea of squads/teams for the Shadow Assassins and Sidiroú faction. I'll create another character for the Shadow Assassins as well. He'll be an NPC

Could you check my app? I added a potential esoteric ability but I don’t know if it’s too powerful or not,

The void ability seems interesting. I'll allow it, but I'll keep an eye out to make sure it isn't overused or used in a way to make it OP. But can you explain a bit more on exactly how it can be used? You did say it could be used as a projectile, so I'm assuming it mainly requires physical contact, right?

Have you even seen JoJos Bizarre Adventure? Well, if not, there is something in that show that can sweep it’s hand in front of them and delete all physical matter directly in front of them, and reality closes up and smooths over like the matter never existed. I weakened it down by making it hard for him to delete large amounts of matter, though he could delete a whole city if my character wanted to, but he’s too conservative with his power to do that, plus it would probably take so much out of him that he would fall dead, and it would have to be a pretty small city. Depending on how much energy he uses, it has different symptoms.

Due to it being too OP, I can’t use the power of ZA WARUDO! So I settled with the hand. I could’ve used Echoes power, or maybe the Emperor, or even Hierophant Green. Then again, my favorite stand, by far, is golden experience.

Now that you mention it, the power does remind me of The Hand.

My character can shoot his void attack over a long distance and delete matter of varying size.
Do you want me to tell you the various symptoms of energy deficiency?

I prefer she/they pronouns, and I enjoy not having to debate people over whether or not they should respect that. If they/them pronouns aren't something you're cool with, just use she/her. Thanks! -That same idiot, 2020

Sure. Also exactly how long can your character shoot the void attack?

About as far as your average 9mm revolver shot. That’s about 2200 meters, but just like a revolver, it’s not accurate at all when fired at that distances, and if it makes contact with anything on that journey there projectile will delete itself with whatever it hits. It also takes large amounts of energy if the projectile will travel that far. It does drop exactly like a bullet, because the energy has mass, and weight. Also the symptoms of energy deficiency go as such. Stage 1: Nausea, profuse sweating, fatigue
Stage 2: increased fatigue, vomiting, hot flashes, migraines
Stage 3: intense headache, coughing up blood, temporary blindness in the most extreme cases.
Stage 4: risk of permanent blindness, bleeding from the eyes, ears, and mouth, intense full body aches.
Stage 5: fainting, risk of entering a comatose state
Stage 6: the final stage. The only symptom of this stage is guaranteed death.

Ok. I'll make sure to keep watch over this, although it seems you can keep it balanced. I would recommend putting that into the list of limitations on your app. Also, how much usage would cause the stages? For example, if the void attack is used one time, then would stage 1 occur? Then if it's used a second time, stage 2 would occur and so on?
