Does YN have land borders with other nations? Only one, with Spain.
Is YN part of any open border agreement? no
Who is responsible for guarding YN's borders? The Army, usually conscripts are used for this purpose.
How strict is the border control out of 10? (0 = no checks at all, 10 = closed borders) 8 – you can only cross at official checkpoints, and all entries and exits are recorded. Border guards will also check your passport very carefully and ask you a lot of questions, especially if you're not a Portuguese or Spanish citizen.
What security features do borders have? There is a fence all along the border with Spain, forcing everyone to use the official checkpoints. Sensors in the ground will activate an alarm if you hop the fence. The border guards are active duty soldiers so they are armed, and will shoot if they think you're a threat.
Does YN allow foreigners? (if answer is no, ignore all the following questions) Yes, as long as they obey the law and cause no trouble.
What travel documents are required/accepted? Foreigners entering the Ecclesiastical State must have a passport valid for the duration of stay plus 180 days, and a Portuguese Visa valid for the duration of stay. They must also be fingerprinted.
Are there immigration checks on entry, exit or both? both
Are there any internal border checkpoints? Not permanently, but you must show your ID when demanded by police.
Is a visa or entry permit required? yes
How to get a visa, and how much does it cost? You must get an appointment at a Portuguese embassy and pay a non-refundable application fee (varies by nation). There are several supporting documents you need:
- Invitation letter
- Bank statement
- Vaccination record and bill of health from a doctor
- Written travel plans
- Tickets, if you are arriving by ship
Are any nationalities or groups exempt from visa requirements? Spanish citizens do not need a visa if they are staying 30 days or less. Roman Catholic clergy from any nation do not need a visa if they are in the Ecclesiastical State for religious duties. On Christian holidays, Catholic and Orthodox Christians visiting for pilgrimages are exempt, but they are only allowed to stay 30 days.
How long are foreigners allowed to stay at a time? Can this be extended? Visas can be for 30, 60, 90 or 180 days. They cannot be extended except in emergencies, so make sure you choose the right visa when applying.
What happens to people who overstay? The Ecclesiastical State has zero tolerance for anyone breaking the law, including foreigners. Because all entries and exits are recorded electronically, overstays are immediately flagged by the computer. The fine is 1500 escudos, and you will not be allowed to leave until the fine is paid at a bank. Then you will be banned from entering for 10 years.
