Frank Roosevelt Sobel - Democratic Party
Image

Account Name: Collatis
Occupation: Senator from Vermont
Political Ideology: New Deal liberalism, progressivism, Keynesianism

Family: Lifelong bachelor
Background: Franklin Roosevelt Sobel was born in 1982 in Burlington, Vermont. His parents were transplants from Brooklyn who had come to Vermont two years earlier. In Sobel’s home growing up, there were only two pictures: one of Franklin D. Roosevelt, for whom Sobel was named, and one of Mayor, and later Congressman and Senator, Bernie Sanders. His parents, union workers themselves, taught Sobel that there is power in a union, and instilled him with a keen sense of justice.

Rather than attend university immediately upon his graduation from high school, Sobel volunteered full time for Ralph Nader’s presidential campaign. The 2000 election was too important to miss. Though he came from a Democratic family, Sobel had determined that the differences between the Democratic Gore and Republican Bush were minimal. Nader seemed to be the only candidate who offered real change. However, as he watched the Republicans steal the election in front of his very eyes, Sobel left the Green Party and committed himself to restoring the Democratic Party of Roosevelt, Kennedy, and Johnson. The coming years of the Bush administration would only strengthen his resolve.

The next year he attended Columbia University, eventually settling on a degree in Economics. Sobel found himself gravitating in particular towards the work of John Maynard Keynes. Trickle down economists and deficit hawks became his sworn enemies. Sobel was active in opposing the Iraq War and George W. Bush’s attempt to privatize Social Security. Though Sobel managed to graduate from Columbia, he never took much interest in his studies, seeing them as tedious, and he eventually dropped out of graduate school. From there on, Sobel pursued a career in politics.

Returning to Burlington, Sobel became heavily involved in the ascendant Vermont Democratic Party. He worked for Bernie Sanders’s successful independent bid for the U.S. Senate in 2006, gaining a post-campaign job in Sanders’s Senate office managing policy. After helping to manage Senator Patrick Leahy’s re-election bid in 2010, Sobel was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives, where he became a leading advocate of establishing single-payer universal healthcare in Vermont. Sobel supported the eventual “Green Mountain Care” program, but became critical of the state’s lack of progress in regards to the program, resulting in its eventual scrapping. Sobel resigned in frustration from the House, slamming the governor and his fellow legislators for failing to provide for the basic needs of Vermonters.

Sobel at first resisted efforts to draft him to run for Mayor of Burlington in 2018, but eventually agreed to run. He gained cross-party support from the Democratic and Progressive parties, triumphing over a Republican and an independent. As mayor, he increased government transparency, improved public utilities, and re-introduced instant runoff voting for mayoral elections. He proved willing to work with the small Republican minority on the council, but did little to hide his disdain for their party. Only a year after President Donald Trump was reelected thanks to Mark Zuckerberg splitting the vote, Sobel was reelected under Burlington’s IRV system with a majority of the vote. As mayor, he continued to pressure the legislature to adopt universal healthcare, to no avail.

I'm just wondering if it would be ok if we could change a state, California, to a parliamentary system through introducing a new Constitution with my character or is that too much me creating the history?

Great character — I just have two requests if you would be amenable to them. The first is for him to belong to one of the two major parties, simply because for more than a month we'll be doing primaries, and independents will likely have little to do during that time (plus, we just have too many independents as it is). The second is a little bit more modest: instead of Senate President pro Tem, either Majority Leader or Minority Leader would be more realistic. This is just because the PPT is usually the most senior senator — someone who's served in the Senate for 40+ years.

Assuming you can do both of those, or provide a compelling reason why you can't, your application is accepted.

Thank you. I have changed his party to the Republicans and his role to the Majority Leader.

Is jimmy carter the oldest person in the world at this point? As he is 124 years old I think.

Obviously an excellent app so far, and since I'm familiar with your roleplaying, you're accepted. Just be sure to finish the app at some time.

I think that would be acceptable. Uphill battle, certainly, but not implausible for California — go for it!

    Great — accepted.

It's an uncomfortable thought, the fact that Jimmy Carter is going to outlive us, but it's something we have to accept.

I will not accept this application as it stands. I will accept it if you can do the following for me:
      • Change the political affiliation — roleplaying an independent is more labor intensive and I am not familiar enough with your roleplaying to trust you will fulfill those ends
      • Reconsider the Mayor of Miami position — there is another prominent position in Miami politics with a similar title that attracts more attention
      • Expand on the biography — and expand on why he's successful (i.e., his wealth)
I hope to see you improve your app so you can join!

What might the interest rate be?

Assuming 4% it looks like the states would be paying 16 trillion per year in interest payments.

Great question — I can't say I'm big with macroeconomics, but a little bit of research suggests to me it'd be between 4.5% and 5%. But if anyone knows more about this, your input would be valued.

Ok. Thank you. I think I was mistaking 1.6 trillion for 16 trillion, because for 5% I got 2 trillion.

A good story rests on plot development and character dialog. Elections have consequences - both on nations and the individuals who get to be a part of that history. How else will people get interested in a story of they can't relate to characters?

Would you guys mind if I edited one of my previous posts?

Based on the IC, it sounds like people can announce their candidacy up to a year in advance and so official candidates probably would have been announced before the last minute point.

Edit: never mind. After some more internet research it sounds like some candidates announce their plans years in advance.

Theodore “Theo” Courtney Guess - Democratic
      Image

      Account Name: New Cobastheia
      Occupation: Premier of California
Political Ideology: Left-Libertarianism, Democratic Socialism, Egalitarianism, Left-Populism, Enviromentalism

      Family:
      Eric Santiago (43) - Fiance
      Alice Rivera (41) - Ex-Wife
      Cassandra and Alexander Rose-McKaughan (16) - Godchildren
Cynthia Guess (13) - Daughter with Alice
Benji Guess (9) - Son with Alice

      Background:
Born in Tahlequah, Oklahoma as a member of the Cherokee Nation in August of 2007 to his two parents that were just out of high school. For most of his childhood, he was very poor and because his parents wanted a better life for all of them they decided to move to California, settling a little bit north of Redding, right before Theo started 5th grade.

However do the stress of moving across the country, among other things, his parents ended up getting a divorce when Theo was 11. They both ended up remarrying by the time Theo graduated High School, but the whole process force Theo to grow up faster than he probably should of, he tried to run away to Oklahoma several times as an act of rebellion during his teenage years.

During his high school years, he was somehow both one of the smartest people in his grade and one of the most proficient partiers. He first became politically aware when his school had an active shooter on campus, She killed 11 people and injured 17 more, including Theo, who got a bullet in the shoulder. To this day, he suffers from mild PTSD, although episodes at this point in his life extremely rare due to a lot of past therapy and medication. He first became enamored with Politics during the 2024 election, supporting Gwen Graham from the moment she announced her Candidacy. He ended up Valedictorian of his high school and, after taking a gap year to volunteer and travel Europe, he headed off to Stanford. Graduating in 2030 with a BA in Political Science and Economics with a Minor in Religious Studies.

Wanting to get into politics, quickly, he ran for an At-Large seat on the Cherokee National Council, with 8 candidates running he won with a plurality of 35%. He held that seat for 1 term of 4 years and lived in Washington, DC for most of it while still having California as his legal residence. This is also around the time he met his future ex-wife, a law student at Georgetown. After his term he wanted to move on to federal politics, running against the unpopular incumbent in California’s 2nd District. After the primary Guess and a Republican remained, with the district being very much to the left, Guess won easy.

While a Representative, he kept a low profile, partly due to being part of the California delegation. He did gain some national attention for being the youngest member of the house at the time and for introducing a bill that would stop the production of the penny and nickel, which eventually passed. But, other than that he remained relatively low profile.

Guess, seeking a higher office ran for Senate in 2036. The final two ended up being the incumbent, Kevin de Leon, who had become more like Dianne Feinstein over the years, and Guess, who was even farther to the left than de Leon. Guess used similar strategies thate de Leon in 2018. He also called him a fake progressive, all talk and no action, were as Guess had the legislative history to show that he was backing what he was running on. On all sides the race was vicious, however, Guess won at 52-48. Due to Guess being too young to actually hold the seat, it remained vacant until his birthday in August. After this swearing in, he was heard saying, “The best birthday of my adult life.” During his term, he proved to be a figure similar to Paul Wellstone, Sherrod Brown, and Tulsi Gabbard in Congress, which lead to him becoming even more popular in California and more well known nationally.

On a personal note, a few months before Guess took his seat, a long-time friend and her wife asked for Theo to father their children, which Theo agreed to. When they were born he was designated as the Godfather and still keeps in contact with them, acting as a fatherly figure in the form of a pseudo-uncle-father. A few months after he took his seat in Senate, he got married.

Two years after becoming a Senator, the California Gubernatorial Election happened, Guess supported his long-time friend and former classmate, Eric Santiago, a Professor of Applied Mathematics at UC Berkeley. He was the top Democrat in the race and a good chunk of independents supported him as well, however, the field had an abnormally large amount of Democrats that year as the incumbent decided not to run. The large field ended up affecting the primary with the spoiler effect. Santiago finished 3rd, behind two Republicans. This election ultimately what was needed to start a movement for a Third Californian Constitutional Convention, something the Republican Governor of California would refuse to do.

During the rest of his term as Senator, while still supporting progressive bills and was a main leader of the progressive movement in Congress, he mainly focused on Electoral Reform, although he wasn’t very successful as the status quo is the status quo after all. His focus gained him even more popularity in California, where he was already rather popular. When the 2042 Elections came around, Theo had to make a choice. Either rerun for Senate, where all the polls showed him winning his seat a second time or run for Governor in a race where no one knows what will happen. Although he originally intended to run for Senate, a little over 5 million people signed a petition asking Guess to run for Governor so he could fix California.

Guess was the first progressive to announce his run for Governor, running on “Making California a Real Democracy”. Because others wanted to avoid the spoiler effect he only faced two other Democratic challengers in the primary. On the Republican side, there was the Governor, of course, and the Lt. Governor. The final two were Guess and the Lt. Governor. Although the Lt. Governor was much more popular than the Governor, he was still a Republican running against an extremely popular candidate in a blue state. Guess won 61-39.

One of the first things he did as Governor was forming a Constitutional Revision Commission, the start of this 4-year plan, Commission to Convention to Approval to In-Effect. One of the suggestions Theo submitted was to turn California into a Parliamentary System, something he had long supported citing deadly, deadly gridlock. It was one of the many things the Commission recommended among others.

One year into his Governorship, the Fresno Constitutional Convention was called into order. Guess, holding an ex-officio seat in the Convention, because he was the Governor, was elected to preside over the Convention. After about a year of near-constant debate from all the isles, a Constitution was approved and headed off to the State Legislative Branch. It passed State Assembly easily, in part because it was giving them more power. The Senate, on the other hand, did not like the fact they were to be abolished. A compromise was reached where the Senate would be merged with the Assembly. About a month later it was approved by the Convention and the Senate. A referendum was set for Election Day 2045.

If the year wasn’t going to be rough enough campaigning to change a Presidential system to a Semi-Parliamentary one, he walked into his then-wife having sex with another man a few days after New Year’s. Theo wanted to kill them both right there, and he would of if he didn’t realize it would destroy his political career. Instead, he decided to divorce her and get the custody of their children after proving his ex-wife’s abuse in court, which it should be noted it wasn't all that clear if she even wanted custody of the children. To keep his mind off the divorce, he drowned himself in his work.

Now on to the campaigning, the Democratic Party of California wasn’t the happiest with Guess, partly because they’re more moderate than him and partly because of the Constitution which required STV or IVF depending on the number of seats available, which could bring down the Democratic Majority in the Legislative. They had to go along with it because they knew the people wanted a more democratic California after the Governor’s Race of 2038. Theo found that getting the current government to agree was much harder than getting the people on board, which allowed him to have some downtime for campaigning standards. In this downtime, he became “closer” with soon-to-be-husband Eric Santiago. The vote for the referendum won with 69-31. As such, next year’s election, wouldn’t be electing a Governor, but a Premier as to ensure a smooth transition between the two constitutions when the new one came into effect.

With the nonpartisan blanket primary replaced with a partisan semi-closed primary for the office of Premier. Guess ran unopposed in the primary and as such, won the Democratic Primary. Facing his main challenge, a moderate Republican, Guess won. Under the new system, the Democrats won 123 of the 200 seats in the California Parliament and Guess won his election for Premier. Now with the power of a Head of State and Government with no gridlock to get in his way he was able to pass several progressive measures, such as single-payer healthcare, universal credit, more regulations for big businesses and higher taxes for the richest of the rich. He is currently in his 2nd term as Premier.

By the way, if anyone has any questions about California's Constitution I would be happy to answer with what I've thought of so far.
