SHADOWS OF KREMLIN

Roleplay on The Red Court

Out of the ashes of old, sick Imperium a new Union was born. Its creators had a vision of glorious future society, the one where inequality and exploitation will be forever abolished and men will live as brothers. It was to be first socialist society ever conceived, whose Proletariat, free from the shackles of history will work to build a new communist world. The Communist party that had abolished the tyranny of Tsars and emerged victorious from a bloody Civil War stepped up to take role of a vanguard which will lead the people of Soviet Union into the brighter future.

It was not all perfect, however. World War One and the Civil War were bloody affairs that left the country in ruins. Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, celebrated comrade Lenin had died on 21 of January of 1924 after the assassination attempt and series of strokes had forced him to spend last three years administrating the divided huge country from his sickbed. His closest associates had started squabbling for power as soon as he was interred in a newly built mausoleum on Red Square.

Party is divided over the future course of the country. The new socialist state seems to be mistrusted by every one of its neighbors and its leadership is still unsure of its international position. New Economic Policy that was adopted by Lenin is slowly encouraging economic growth, but is being widely denounced by left wingers and proponents of planned economy. Meanwhile, understaffed and ill-equipped Red-Army is fighting the revolt of Basmachi militias in Central Asia.

You play as member of Politburo, delegate to Congress of Soviets, Representative elected to Central Executive Committee or any office holder in the Soviet Union. You'll be proposing laws, scheming to climb in the ranks of Nomenklatura, fight for your ideals, try to rebuild your country or work to satisfy your own ambition.

Halls of Kremlin are dark and danger lurks from every corner. People say they are capitalist spies and saboteurs everywhere, mixed in with ambitious bureaucrats, party fanatics and professional revolutionaries who had now donned the mantle of politicians. But from inside this darkness, unparalleled optimism and faith in humanity and progress still shines from time to time .

This is Shadows of Kremlin RP, where you will play as small man thrown into whirlwind of history and burdened with responsibility to built society unlike any other world had ever seen.

RULES

1. OP and CO-OP are your General Secretaries of the Party. Heed their words or go to Gulag.
2. No RL characters: just assume everyone nor dead by 10th of February 1924 had different name, picture and bio. However, characters inspired by Trotsky or Stalin would be plausible to simulate that turbulent era of Russian history better.
3. Give notice if you're gonna be absent for longer period of time
4. Try to keep one-liners to a minimum outside conversations.
5. Be nice to your comrades. No drama
6. Characters have their flaws and inner conflicts. Soviet Supermen is something that may await us in our glorious, communist future, but characters here have flaws.
7. If rule isn't clear ask for clarification.
8. If you wish to kill or send to Gulag someone's character make sure this is arranged with that person and OP.
9.-No metagaming. This takes two forms:using OOC knowledge that you have but your character could not in the IC, and attempting to "engineer" a character specifically to do something in relation to specific aspects of another character or a situation.
10. OOC goes in OOC, IC goes in IC. Simple.
11. No one sided caricatures: people of the period were man with their ethics, their flaws, their ambitions...Some were good, some were horrible, some were in for the power, some honestly believed in communism. Avoid demonizing as well as uncritical glorification.
12.Player is allowed to have up to five characters. If you decide to run more than one character, try to diversify between them and keep interaction between characters you own at bare minimum.
13. Respect rules of the NS forum.
14. HAVE FUN

Dominant factions of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks)

Centrists: Centrist faction of the party stands for continuation and better implementation of New Economic Policy (NEP). It relied on state and party bureaucracy and rigorous hierarchic implementation of democratic centralism that empowered Party organs over organs of the State. They were diverse in their economic and social views, wavering between Left and Right opposition. (RL examples: J.V. Stalin, Mikhail Kalinin,Anastas Mikoyan)

Left Opposition: Members of the Left opposition claimed NEP slows down industrialization and strengthens influence of the peasants who they considered backwards and reactionary. They believed communism can be achieved through collectivization of the agricultural land estates and rapid industrialization. They tended to hold relatively socially liberal views. They advocated for "proletarization" of society and believed that USSR as new workers' state would not be able to hold out against the pressures of a hostile capitalist world unless socialist revolutions quickly took hold in other countries as well. (RL examples: Leon Trotsky, Grigory Zinoviev, Lev Kamenev)

Right Opposition: Formed around ideological proponents of NEP in the Politburo, members of Right Opposition stressed the importance of the countryside. They advocated gradual transition from "free market socialism" of the NEP period to communism. Main assumption of the "Right Opposition Communists" was that government intervention in "controlled market economy" will result in gradual disappearance of economic differences. They were first proponents of doctrine of "Socialism in one country". (RL examples: Nikolai Bukharin, Alexei Rykov, Mikhail Tomsky

Worker's bloc: The party group that was formed by union members in response to perceived "bureaucratization" of the Communist Party. They were strongly opposed to both NEP and central planning of economy, advocating for greater role of industrial unions. By 1924 there are largely marginalized, but they still hold a significant deal of sway among factory workers.(Alexander Shliapnikov, Alexandra Kollontai,Sergei Medvedev)

The main governing bodies of USSR :

Legislative

Congress of Soviets of the Union

Delegates were elected indirectly from the City Council - 1 member from 25 thousand voters, from provincial (regional, territorial) and Republican congresses - 1 member from the 125 thousand residents. In 1924 it amounts to 1535 seats. When Congress is not in session, legislation is proposed by bicameral Central Executive Committee.

Chambers of C.E.C:

Soviet of the Union: it has 371 delegates elected by Congress of Soviets.

Soviet of Nationalities: second chamber was composed of five representatives for each member Republic, and one representative for each associated autonomous Republic. In 1924 it amounted to 43 delegates elected on universal secret ballot

Furthermore,C.E.C chambers elected Presidium to act as legislative body between C.E.C sessions. Presidium had 21 members- seven elected by Soviet of the Union, Seven by Soviet of Nationalities and seven elected in the joint meeting.

Executive
Congress of Commissars: basically government of the USSR. It had varying member of Commissars, each one with his own portfolio. It was elected by Congress of Soviet. Its chairman was referred to as "Premier of the USSR".

Party organs

Communist party organs had power that was equal to, or sometimes even surpassed that of the legislative and executive institutions. They were:

Congress: composed of varying number of delegates elected by regional party chapters. At this point in history it meets once a year.

Central Committee: it had 71 member and was elected by and responsible to Congress. It elected Politburo, Orgburo and General Secretary who was de-facto leader of the USSR.

Politburo: Seven member group elected by Central Committee. It set the course of the Party between Congresses.

Central Auditing Commission: Commission that supervised affairs of the party, mostly usage of funds and elections. It had 53 members.

IC Date Range : February the 10th -February the 17th 1924

Currently in the News

Nakhichevan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic Established:

The intention behind establishment of NASSR in February of 1924 was stopping of bad blood between Armenians and Azerbeigans in Transcaucasian SFSR. However, establishment of the autonomous republic is just the first step in alleviation of ethnic tensions in the area. Congress of Republican Soviets will convene to name the commission that is supposed to draw up the Constitution of NASSR and Federal government and the Party will probably want to supervise the process.

Basmachi threaten the peasants in Bukhara

Image

Born in the throes of anti-conscription riots on 1916, revolt of Islamist Basmachi militias still rages in Fergana Valley. According to the intelligence reports, the movement had fallen in numbers and is only 5000-6000 strong and most of its leaders are dead or have left the USSR. Although most of the population are loyal to the USSR, the Basmachi bandits, now resorted to banditry are still harassing the locals, using the rugged landscape to their advantage.

The Second Congress of Soviets in session

The Second Congress of Soviets of the Soviet Union is in session in Moscow. After voting on new constitution and giving Petrograd the new name of Leningrad, Congress has several new decision to make, namely to vote on the new chairman of Council of People's Commissars and to appoint the Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Acting Chairman, Anatoly Mikuliyeev who served as Chairman after the death of Vladimir I. Lenin will certainly announce his candidacy for the post.

Thanks for your imput, corrected it. It depends on the amount of power you want to wield and kind of stuff you want to deal with: Politburo member will put you in the midst of "behind the scenes" politics directing the course of the party. People's Commissars will mostly implement executive decisions while legislators will mostly draft legislation. At the moment NEP is in full swing so country is experiencing economic growth. Most legislation will deal with incorporation of new republics and autonomous republics in the USSR as well as Foreign relations and foreign trade issues.

It is possible to have positions at both Politburo and any of executive or legislative bodies.

NS Nation Name: Amuaplye
Character Name: Nikodin Georgiy Stegnov
Gender: Male
Age: 48, born on January 27, 1876.
Position, role or job: General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
Character Photo: Image
Ethnicity: Russian
Character Faction: Bolshevik (Left Opposition, but may break away and form his own group later on.)
Main Strengths (three to five): Good speaker, good at convincing, and able to hide his dissenting opinions.
Main Flaws (three to five, same number as strengths): Brutal, argumentative, and a megalomaniac.
Bio:

Nikodin was born in January 27, 1876, to a middle-class family in Moscow, his mother was Vera Yanovna Tolstokozheva, and fis father was Tsezar Leonidovich Stegnov. His childhood was relatively normal, and he started working in a textile mill when he was 13.

In 1904, when Nikodin was 28, he was sent to the front lines of the Russo-Japanese War, where almost all of his friends were killed or captured in the Battle of Sandepu, and Nikodin was seriously wounded from a gunshot wound to the ankle.

He returned to Moscow shortly thereafter, and worked at an iron foundry until the Russian Revolution in 1917, where he joined the Bolsheviks. He organized a strike, which lead to him being fired, so he decided to join the Red Army. He has the rank of Lieutenant General due to his actions in the Revolution.

In 1918, he started to have a career in politics. He rose in the ranks of the Russian SFSR division, having gained a large role in the Moscow division, and was elected to the Congress in 1920.

In the Congress, he toned down his more radical policies, as he knew none of it would probably go past Lenin, and it would probably cost Nikodin his position in Congress. He did, however, create a draft, and start a successful propaganda campaign about it.

In 1923, he was elected to the Politburo, with a vote similar to this:

Yes - 68.4
No - 31.6

The reason why people dissented, were due to, again, his radical views.

He had a very short stint in the Politburo, not because he was kicked out, but because he was elected to the role of General Secretary. He only had 1 major thing, an act trying to put all able-bodied young men between 16 and 32 in the military, an act based off of his draft in 1921.

After the death of Vladimir Lenin, he was selected as General Secretary, but only after a week long deadlock in Congress, due to people questioning Nikodin's radical views. And even then, the vote was close, approximately like this:

Stegnov - 50.3
Others - 49.7

His main policies are:

1. Slowly up the pay of workers.
2. Funding science labs across the country in order to advance in biology, astronomy, etc.
3. Catch up to everyone else in military size and technology.
4. Instill a 1-Year Plan system for all farms and factories, by setting an annual quota that would start out small, but then would get bigger and bigger.
5. Develop new technology in order to rival even the biggest of the world powers.

App looks good, I only have a couple of questions to help flesh Nikodin out more. First of all, I don't really understand what faction do you mean by "Bolshevik"? Bolsheviks themselves were divided among several unofficial factions There are factions in the OP where you can choose from. Also, I'd like to know how was he wounded- bullet to the leg, shrapnel... Also, being a representative of Russian SFSR means that he had to be elected to Soviet of Russian SFSR first. I assumed it was in 1921?

NS Nation Name: Free Territory of Makhnovia
Character Name: Anatoly Evgenievich Mikuliyeev
Gender: Male
Age: 48
Position, role or job: Acting Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars, Member of the 12th Politburo
Character Photo:Image
Ethnicity: Russian
Character Faction: Centrist
Main Strengths (three to five): Educated, Old Bolshevik, Good Party Organizer, European connections
Main Flaws (three to five, same number as strengths): Bad speaker, Conservative, Children of "class enemies", Indecisive
Bio: Born in St. Petersburg in 1876 to the affluent member of imperial administration, young Anatoly had everything he could desire. In school he excelled in mathematics and natural sciences, but he was always withdrawn and more drawn to arts and classical music than to company. His world shattered when his father was accused of cavorting with a group of liberally-minded nobles in 1895. In despair and facing prospect of tarnished family name he decided to move abroad to study architecture. He enrolled into École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. It was there that he was drawn to leftist ideas. He came in touch with some of the RSDLP members and took part in 1903 Congress in London where he joined the Bolsheviks. In the meantime he gained some recognition as a successful modernist architect, projecting concert halls and metro stations in London and Koln. In 1909. he briefly returned to Russia after the death of his father and was immediately arrested and convicted to catorga in Siberia. It took him three years to escape and join the group of professional revolutionaries in Kazan region. He was mostly ill suited for agitation, but he gained reputation as a supreme political strategist. During the war, he escaped conscription and hid in London, only to return in October 1917. He was a delegate to First All-Russian Congress of Soviets. He was a delegate at every Congress from 1917 to 1920 helping to organize food distribution to the Red Army troops and helping to secure the old Imperial infrastructure. He was, however vary of Bolshevik radicalism and he often spoke against Red Terror and suppression of religion. In 1919 he got his seat on Politburo and place of People's Commissar for Labor. As Commissar for Labor he devised a system of stratification of the trade unions, bringing them firmer into the grip of the state, while making sure they aren't overly harmed by NEP. In 1923 he devised Secretariat of Post-War Reconstruction, a huge body of construction workers, engineers and architect organizations tasked with re-building the country after the Civil War. The body was attacked by many as overly bureaucratized and inefficient. He served on this seat until 1924, when he became acting Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars and pro-tempore Premier of USSR.
