People are encouraged to marry for reproduction to keep the country from dying, and maybe for more practical reasons such as economic factors. But Vivans in general do not get hung up on the whole idea of forever. For most people all that is required is that all the witnesses can see what's going on and move around a enough. Alcohol is almost never served to the official witnesses or the spouses. Why would you impair your ability to sign the paperwork? Since paperwork is long and ardourous there might be snacks around for people to take eating breaks. The spouses get bored and hungry signing the boring stuff. But all food breaks are held a safe distance away from where all the actual signing is to be done, no use in smudging or spilling any food on the paperwork.
