[April Fools]International Domestic Transit Riding Newswires

Postby 95X » Sat Mar 31, 2018 9:50 am

Welcome to the repository for results of public transportation riding competitions. Initial results were created by repurposing a scorinator designed to give results in HH:MM:SS format and using a spreadsheet to add additional information.

For example, competitions can be held to see how fast one can photograph a set of landmarks within a city, finding the furthest location of a chain store (like a restaurant, convenience store, etc.), or the longest amount of time one can stand riding a particularly difficult route.

As always, Nationstates is a work of fiction; these kinds of activities may be prohibited by law and/or social norms and customs in your real-life area.

Imperial Hinodejin Bus Circuit Results

Postby Kita-Hinode » Sun Apr 01, 2018 6:38 am

With a small budget, bus aficionados managed to get a bus riding circuit in the plains near the land of former nation Mongolia. The results come from a 50-lap race done by the very same aficionados, all of those going under codenames. Keep in mind that most of these didn't race alone in their buses and the actual machines themselves were somewhat modified with engineering, nitro and option fuzzy dice.

The Great Drawkland Transit Blitz

Postby Drawkland » Tue Apr 17, 2018 9:24 pm

I may be late with this but shhhhh

Every year, many cities across Drawkland hold what is called a "transit blitz" - citizens from around the city compete to visit as many landmarks and important sites and sights of the city. The only rule? You can only travel by foot or by city-sponsored public transit methods. This could be buses, subways, above ground railways, monorails, and zeppelin or taxi in some cities (as well as the levitating/flying versions of these devices).

A large number of cities in Drawkland participate in this national event in some capacity or another, but 5 cities are famous for it and are the "real" destinations for the Blitz. These cities are Metropolon (the capital), Drawk City (the largest city), Owabrok (western city with a vast transport network), Ducentu (bustling port city), and Corinth City (known for its technological innovations). In the main Transit Blitz event, 10 high-scoring blitz members from the previous year go head to head uninterrupted. In most cities, and all of the Big 5, the top 5 racers from the previous year are automatically invited to the top-level blitz next year, while the lower 5 are "relegated" so to speak, and 5 great performers from more open blitzes are invited to the top blitz.

In these Big 5 cities, there are larger-scale competitions with hundreds or even thousands of participants, but those are generally not as well-kept, timing or rules wise. They're mainly "for fun" of the common man. These times shown here are by transit-riding "professionals" (read: people who don't like driving cars).

Each of these 5 cities gave a 5 hour time limit to go to 15 locations across the city. At each location, a volunteer waits for any racers to arrive, and gives them a checkmark in the corresponding location box on the racer's forearm band. These bands are only for participants, and for the duration of the event, allows them to travel on the city's affiliated transit networks for free. If a participant can't get from the start/finish area (usually a central location like a park or town hall) before the 5 hour time limit, they are marked as DNF along with how many landmarks they visited. Crossing the finish line without all 15 marks is not penalized, but not counted as a finish.

Winners of these high-level blitz events usually receive prizes. In these Top 5 cities, any of these 10 participants which finishes the race without DNF'ing usually receives free passage on some or all city-affiliated transit networks. For the top 3, prize money as well as a corresponding placement medal is given. The 1st place champion also receives a trophy, and occasionally a day out with the mayor of the city and sometimes even Iarocav himself.

These are the results of this year's Big 5 Transit Blitz. Provided at the bottom is a Top 10 placement among every city's racers. While not every city is the same, experts in the field have designed each race to take around the same time for professionals, despite the obviously different layout and transit system of each city. After the blitz weekend is over, Drawkland's #1 transit racer usually has their run broadcast on TV the next weekend (for the Big 5, all racers are tracked and filmed during their run).

8 Irene Elzin (MET) 4:28:38
9 Phillip Leigh (COR) 4:28:38
10 Judy Brielle (DUC) 4:28:54

In the end, Stacy Shay Ververs is the ultimate Drawkland Blitz champion! Her unprecedented 4 hour, 24 minute, 55 second time was over an entire minute better than any other Big 5 competitors. This is unique as well, since Stacy was new to the top-level blitz in Metropolon this year. However, her great skill at being able to choose the right route to correspond with traffic flow, on top of her youth and ability to run on foot at a solid and safe speed, points to her being a perennial competitor. Predictably enough, she works as a Traffic Technician for the Metropolon city government, and graduated from Metropolon City College with a degree in Civil Engineering only 4 short years ago.

One minute later, across the country in Ducentu, Maddie Queen crossed the finish line. 4 hours and under 26 minutes is a fantastic time for any racer, and may be enough to capture the national title, but Maddie was unfortunate enough to get such a great time the same year that Stacy Shay Ververs came to the stage and blew everybody out of the water. Queen, however, was not discouraged. In an interview after all the final results were in, she was quoted as saying that she was definitely ready to indirectly take on Stacy again next year. "All it takes is one red light or one person being slow in a stairwell to make a minute's difference. This is no big deal."

And then merely another minute later comes in Lin Morrish from Owabrok. The last of the sub-4h28m times, Lin had a personal best time this year in the top level. She was proud of her achievement for sure, and said that "the thrill of beating your own best is enough of a reward in itself. And so is the cash prize. That's a good reward too. I don't need to be the best in the nation, I just need to be better than myself."

Then comes the slew of over-28-minute times. This, every year, seems to be the ceiling for most. Some quirks in the data: only 2 of the top 10, Steven Gillian and Phillip Leigh, were male. All the rest were female. Now, in an athletically equal society as Drawkland, this isn't some groundbreaking feat, but it's definitely something interesting to note. Speaking of Steven Gillian, he was the only Drawk City racer to finish in the national Top 10. His time was solidly above 28 minutes, but this was enough to win a Drawk City race that had second place far above 4h30m.

Metropolon, who held the national champion, also held the most top finishers, at 3. Ducentu, Owabrok, and Corinth City all had 2, and Drawk City with only 1. This is a common trend, as Metropolon was a masterfully pre-designed city with traffic flow and transit efficiency prioritized during development. Non-Metropolites usually complain about how the system is unfair, but hey. The nation's top civil engineers design the races and routes to be as equal as possible despite the differing city layouts.

Finally, the closest finish of the year was in Corinth City for sure. Jillian Dunn and Phillip Leigh both clocked in above 28 minutes, but merely seconds apart. Jillian ended in first, with Phillip only 2 seconds behind her. Unbeknownst to each other, both racers had taken the same monorail train back to the finish area after collecting their 15th checkpoint. They were on separate carriages on the same train, and exited on opposite sides of the platform. Both running the stairs down to the ground, they bumped into each other at the platform exit stairwell. They both broke into a sprint to get to the park area where the finish line was. Ultimately, it was Jillian who managed to break away with a quicker stride and crossed the finish line first to win the Corinth City blitz.

Well that's it for this year's Great Drawkland Transit Blitz! We hope to see you here next year for the next edition.

The National Public Transportation Championship of Darmen for the year 2040 was recently completed over the course of the entire year (competitors were allowed to make their attempts at any time during the year, provided only one attempt was made). Competitors were given a $1,000 dollar budget. The competitors faced the following challenges (accompanied by a judge of the NPTCD Committee):
  • Stage 1: Each competitor is blind folded and dropped off at random locations around Scott City, each location a kilometer away from the nearest bus stop. The blindfolds are removed at exactly ten minutes before each bus will arrive at the respective stop. Each competitor is given a map and a bus schedule, and must determine their location within the metropolis, the location of the nearest stop and the fastest path to get there, all without asking for help. After arriving at their bus stop, they must wait for a bus to arrive, board the bus, and travel to the Scott City International Airport. Each of the bus stops are within 25-35 minutes of the airport (adjustments are made to the times of the competitors to account for this, so that there is an even playing field).
  • Stage 2: After arriving at the airport, competitors must book a flight on Air Terranea from Scott City to Centralis, Electrum and back again. While in Electrum, they must buy a postcard and mail it to one of their aunts (if no aunt exists, a cousin may be substituted instead).
  • Stage 3: After returning to Scott City, competitors must take either the Central Express or Red Fire trains to Eau Claire. While on the train, each competitor is required to yodel for at least half an hour, as well as using the toilet and leaving it unflushed.
  • Stage 4: Finally, after arriving in Eau Claire, competitors must board the ferry to Tilden Island, or, if their budget allows, rent a boat.
The competitor with the lowest combined time over the four stages wins.
