Chapter 1: The Plot of the Mastermind

They were getting close now: just a few more minutes and the next class of Novum Saeculum would be touching down. "I think we have a good bunch this year." "You say that every year, William," Grey said with a bit of a chuckle. "Maybe," The mountain of a man said with a rumble that indicated he was amused. "But how often am I wrong? What I want to know is, why do you make me wear these monkey suits, Edwin?" Paladin asked while struggling to tie his tie. "The first impression you make with new students in important. You need to show strength; let them know that you're in charge."

Paladin rolled his eyes and continued to be thwarted by the strip of cloth. "You look fine, Mr. Nantz," Heather said as she and Jacob joined the men on the School's front porch. When she saw Willaim's plight she motioned for him to bend down. He tried to protest, but a stern look from the engineer cut him off. With a sigh, He relented, and Heather quickly fixed the tie. "Thank you." He said with a genuine smile. "You are welcome. And Mr. Holland is right, you should look nice on the students' first day, don't you think, Jacob," She asked her Husband who looking at his phone off to the side. "Sure, but I'll stick to shorts and a T-shirt. Where's Aubry and John?"

"Late. Again." Grey said with a huff as he glanced at his watch. "I've never been late a day in my life." A voice called out as John came out of the house and stood next to Grey. "Where's your suit?" "Uh, I lost it."

"How did you lose the bloody thing? I left it on your bed!" John shrugged. "I don't know, but I'm really old. Maybe it slipped my mind." Edwin rolled his eyes, "You're going to outlive us all, your memory isn't going anywhere anytime soon." John shrugged in an exaggerated manner, and Aubry snuck in to stand next to Jacob and Heather. "Stop bickering you two. The students are here," Paladin said gesturing to the Argus dropship approaching the landing area, a concrete square a few hundred feet in front of the main building.

Joseph squinted as the dropship's rear ramp lowered, pouring sunlight into the relatively dark ship. He shielded his face with his hands and followed an Argus agent down the ramp and began making his way to the very large house in the distance. He had seen pictures of the Island, but it looked even better now that he was here. A good-sized pond shimmered to his right, and in the distance, he saw forest-covered hills. Joseph had kept to himself for most of the flight, giving a quick smile or hello when he had to. The other students seemed nice; some a little too overenthusiastic for his taste.

The herd of students finally made it to the front of the house where the staff was waiting for them. Their escorting agent gave a salute as he headed back to the ship. There was no going back now.

"Students, welcome to the Novum Saeculum Academy. I am Edwin Holland, and I will be one of your instructors during your time here. I am sure you all recognize the man to my left; Your Headmaster Willam Nantz, better known as Paladin." The Headmaster gave a friendly smile and wave, but let Grey continue the welcome. "To my right is John Smith who you can go to at any time with any concern you may face during your time here, and standing next to Mr. Nantz we have Richard Weinkauf, also known as The Artisan, and Aubry Wall. They teach matters including combat preparedness, and combat training respectively. And to my far left, you have Mr. and Mrs. Gross. Mr. Gross is our resident doctor, and Mrs. Gross can repair anything you take to her."

"We, of course, have a set of rules you will be expected to keep in mind at all times. Most of them are common sense: don't injure classmates or damage school property, maintain reasonable dress etiquette, don't skip instruction periods, and don't disobey the Staff. That last rule can save your life, especially with the unique risks you will be exposed to. For the complete list of rules, you can refer to your student handbook waiting for you in your rooms. You have been paired up with a roommate, and your rooms are listed on the sheet Mr. Smith is holding." John held up the piece of paper in question.

"For today, all you are expected to do is become acquainted with your classmates and the Academy grounds. Feel free to explore, but I hope you are hungry; Mr. Nantz will be firing up the grill in the backyard next to the pool area for a welcome cookout. We have high expectations for you all. You represent the future heroes of the world. If you give this school your full effort, we guarantee you we can prepare you for the trials you will face. On behalf of Mr. Nantz and the rest of the Staff: Welcome to the Novum Saeculum Academy!"

The staff applauded the students before they began to disperse and file back inside the house. John stepped forward, holding the rooming assignments. "As Grey said, I am John Smith, but please just call me John; Mr. Smith makes me feel old. i have your room numbers so please come up, one at a time," he added quickly, "and I'll point you in the right direction." Joseph walked up the stairs to the porch, and John stuck his hand out. "Hello, and you are?"

"Joseph Decker." He replied shaking the man's hand.

"Ah, Mr. Decker, you have room 3. Go through the main living room and you'll see a set of stairs on your left. Go up the stairs and it will be marked on the right hand of the hallway."

"Thanks," he replied as he re-shouldered his bag and started toward his room.

Mary and Chahałheeł got off the transport. She listened to Mr. Holland, the coyote didn't seem to care, but he took his cues from his Mistress. Thanks to the Great Spirit that the Academy had let her bring Chahałheeł.

Mary was conflicted about coming to the Academy. She'd left behind her parents and the two other closest to her, her twin sister Martha and her fiance' Luke.

Martha complimented and completed Mary in so many ways. She wasn't jealous of Mary being chosen for medicine woman training. They'd confide in each other, teasing about who had the worst teachers. They also enjoyed physical intimacies.

She and Luke didn't really have an official engagement, there wasn't a ring, but she and Luke had been in love since they had been children and they'd promised marriage to each other after college.

But the Elders told Mary that her going to the Academy would be good for her and for the Tribe. Her Medicine Man mentor had personally been against sending her away, but had been persuaded to add his voice the the Elders.

Now she was here. The Campus seemed pleasant to look at and well cared for.

She approached Mr. Smith and introduced herself, a little uncertainty crept into her voice, "Hi, John. I'm Mary Santiago". Mr. Smith directed her to dorm room number four.

When Mary opened the door to the room, she saw two beds and desks. Hmmmm. This could be good, maybe. She decided that she'd not prejudice the situation before getting to know the other girl. It looked like her roomie was still checking in. She decided, from her view of the room from the door, which opened to the right side, to pick the left side of the room. She hoped that whoever was coming wouldn't make a big deal of it.

Mary unpacked, putting clothes in drawers and closets. Then she slid the empty suitcase underneath her bed.

It had been a tiring morning. Mary decided to relax and maybe nap. She set the alarm on her phone to chime an hour before supper. As she laid back on the bed, Chahałheeł jumped up on the bed and lay next to her. She closed her eyes, breathed calmly and deeply, and fell asleep.

Jessamyn Margaryan

Truth

“Wow! Not even half a day in and you guys are already making death threats. Nice. Well, I’ll remember not to doubt big brother, because I really would like to not die!” said Jess, referencing how Edwin had told them that listening to instructions from the teachers could save their lives. There was a chance that he didn’t really mean it as a death threat and more as a point about the teachers knowing more than the students, but she wasn’t going to pass up on such a good chance for snark. The snark allowed her to deflect from her feelings, at least, even if she had the feeling that this was the kind of place where she could get in trouble for it.

Before there could be some repercussions from what she said, she slung her backpack over her shoulder and went through the living room and up the stairs. She was headed to her room and wondering who her roommate was going to be, and she had… Well, a bit of anxiety over that. She didn’t worry a lot, but if she was going to be stuck with someone, potentially for years, she hoped it was someone that could keep up with her and put up with her attitude. She stopped on her way up the stairs and closed her eyes as she remembered Hannah. It wasn’t often that she found a friend who could match her wit, who also had the bravery and thrill seeking attitude to come help her out whenever and however she needed, even if that help included something like jacking a car.

In the end, it was that loyalty to Jess and that thrill seeking attitude that had killed Hannah, and as Jess wondered who her new roommate would be, she felt pangs of sadness because of that. She missed Hannah so much. Still carried the full weight of the guilt from the accident. Some people showed their sadness about death through things like crying or outwardly showing sadness. Jess, on the other hand, displayed it by not getting closer to anyone else, and flashing anger at the world. There was a lot of anger at herself internalized inside her, but when it came out, it was often directed towards everyone but herself.

Not that she didn’t know how to take the blame. She always blamed herself, but that didn’t keep her from directing her anger at others too. When she reached the top of the stairway, she turned her mind from those thoughts and stepped into her room. No point worrying about her roommate when she could just step into the room and meet them… But it turned out the girl was sleeping. She’d have to wait to talk to her, unless she woke her up, and she didn’t really feel like that right now. So she just set her backpack down and started unpacking her things, not that there were a lot of them.

And then she noticed the coyote on the bed, and she stared for a moment before speaking audibly, hoping to wake up her roommate. What the fuck was a coyote doing in the room? Did it belong to her roommate? Was it trained to not bite her? She was regretting not having a reliable way to defend herself now. “Oh hell to the nah, to the nah nah nah…”

Sam Bellamy ~ Eros

Frost coloured hair swayed in the breeze caused by the dropship as Sam Bellamy made his way amongst the small crowd of people around the same age as he. His plaid skirt and loose areas of his bright blue top wriggled and writhed with the strong, flowing current of air provided not only by the natural breeze, but primarily from the transportation that the students used to get to the island. Sam looked around at the other students, smiling a rather smug yet simultaneously friendly smile on his pale and smooth face. Light blue eyes settled on each and every person before the introduction to the staff.

He wasn't carrying too much. Mostly just some small packs of clothes. Sam wondered if this place had a therapy dog. He rather loved dogs. Especially large and fluffy ones. The bigger, the better! He also hoped that there was quality food, and when the man speaking mentioned that the headmaster would be hosting a backyard grill party, his eyes lit up. He loved food, and even more so, he loved parties.

Soon enough, Sam made his way to the mentioned Me. Smith to find out his rooming.

"Nathaniel Peterson.... Who's that?" He questioned aloud.

Charles Kemp ~ Vortigern

Charles hefted about several large duffel bags on his person. He hoped that his armor and weapons were shipped here safely and without trouble. The huge man lurked in the back of the group, a half-bored, half-irritated look etched into his face. The large man did not care much for the sun on his skin, nor for the group of people he was subjected to traveling with. It didn't help that he was in a sleeveless shirt and shorts as the sun slowly burned his skin, only somewhat alleviated by the coolness of the strong wind created by the dropship.

Charles had no interest in the other people in the group, as of the moment, nor in talk. He half listened to the speech given by Mr. Holland while one ear was accompanied by an ear bud connected to his phone, listening to some tune provided by his Spotify music app. Tired green eyes looked about him to briefly memorize the appearances of the other students as they hustled and bustled about. The only thing that piqued Charles interest in particular was the mention of food. Now that was something he could enjoy. Hopefully, enough would be made to sate his mighty appetite.

Charles waited behind a frost-colour-haired girl (or who he assumed was a girl), and waited to find out where he was rooming. It was unfortunate that he would be bunkered up with someone else, in his mind. He wasn't much for other people, especially strangers. But, he supposed, it could potentially work out, depending on the person. His mind shifted to other things, hoping that the campus would have a place for him to work out...

Will Fischer

Will had made it a point to stick to the background, deciding that, while he had promised his friends back home he would at least try to be social, that didn't mean he had to start from day one. No, first he would observe and when he had a decent idea who was friendly and who was a d-bag, then he would try to make a few friends. So it was with that thought in mind that Will actively avoided talking to anyone on the dropship the entire ride there and that led him standing off to the side while his new professors made their speeches.

'Gotta say, not very impressed so far.' Will thought. Sure, the building and the grounds around it were beautiful in a one-with-nature sort of way, but he felt the speech left a lot to be desired. Basically just introductions followed by a couple of general rules, with a small bit at the end that sorta felt the least bit inspiring. But overall, he didn't feel like he was taking the first steps to the rest of his life, a life of a hero.

'Or maybe I'm just overthinking this.' He admonished himself, barely holding in a sigh. He was about to go find out what room he had when he suddenly had a startling realization, that he really should have already had by now, as to what exactly having a room here would entail.

'Roommates. Right, that's a thing that happens when you go to an academy. So much for avoiding social interaction till I get my bearings.' His feelings of anxiety rising just a bit at the thought of having to interact with a stranger, but still, its not like he could avoid it. Better to just get it over with now. After giving a non-verbal nod to John as he got his room number, Will spent the short walk to his new dorm mentally psyching himself up for what was to come.

'Its just a person, Will, no need to get so worried. And even if he is an ass of person, that just means we'll spend our one or more years pointedly ignoring each other with awkward silences. Ya, no biggie.' And it was with those thoughts that Will finally made it to his door. After taking a moment to compose himself, he opened the door to find...

No one. His roommate was probably still registering. With that, Will felt the white hot shame that came with feeling like an idiot, realizing he had psyched himself up for nothing. With an audible sigh he spoke aloud to himself.

"Well at least I get to pick what side of the room I want. Let's go with... Left!"

Mary Santiago

Windtalker

Though sleeping, their relationship so firmly established, Mary felt Chahałheeł become alert. As she roused herself, Chahałheeł took a defensive stance and bared his teeth at someone else in the room.

Mary made no sudden moves but, as she felt safe, touched her friend in a calm and comforting way that soothed the coyote. He looked into her eyes and was satisfied that she would be well. Then he calmly observed the new human. Mary sat up and looked at the newcomer.

It was a girl with fiery orange hair, dressed in a grunge-punk style. She looked to be Mary's age, or near it.

Mary saw that Chahałheeł had unnerved the newcomer, so she tried to put her mind at ease. "Chahałheeł is very protective of me," said Mary, with an easy smile. "Become his friend and he will look after you, also." She hugged the coyote. Looking at the girl, she said, "people call me Mary. How shall I call you?"

Academy, Day 1
Molly Shanahan (aka "Jinx")

There was a gentle breeze as the branches of the trees swayed. It's funny how one notices things like the condition of the weather in a new situation. Like one is more sensitive to the information coming in, wanting to make sure you figure out what's going on and where important things are. And in the middle of things unknown, various normal aspects of life get imprinted on the mind as well. They make a lasting impression. Things like the weather.

A crowd of younger adults, roughly college aged, had been told to stand in front of a large mansion, and wait. One, a short-ish girl with brown hair that came to the bottom of her neck and then curled out, was wearing crisp and stylish new clothes, and holding a folder. She was a little nervous, and a little sad. This was not the college she had been planning to attend. But her parents who were paying for her schooling had decided that with her abilities - even though these abilities weren't technically harmful - as well as her penchant for causing mischief, this was the place for her. An Academy to help train people like her. But her friends had all gone to normal colleges. She didn't know anyone here. Molly Shanahan didn't blame her mom and dad exactly. Her dad hadn't understood that she was still the same girl she'd always been, even though she could do things no one else could. He kind of freaked out. Got all quiet. Wouldn't address the subject, and tried to pretend like everything was normal when Molly could see his eyes, and know he was scared. Molly's mom, on the other hand, had become assertive. Due to her incidents with the police and shoplifting, Molly was not to be going to any college - even if she got a full ride! Molly had to learn. Molly could have rebelled. Left home and gotten a job somewhere. But eventually, her dad came around and talked with her. And that led her here. Wherever here was.

Obviously important people had come, standing at the front where there was a podium, to address the new students. The headmaster, perhaps, and some of the faculty? The speaker was a professor - Prof. Edwin Holland. The headmaster was a hulking brute of a guy named Nantz. Molly inadvertently gulped when she saw him. Getting sent to the principal's office here could be really scary if this man Paladin was in charge. Though, interestingly enough, there was another guy out in the crowd of students who looked kind of like the headmaster. All muscle and probably no brain. Jock, no doubt. Not that that was a bad thing. He was kind of cute. There were other professors, none of which she knew. One of them was named, of all things, "John Smith." Molly snorted. ("What kind of a name is John Smith? That's the kind of lame alias a really incompetent spy to England would use! Watch it actually be an alias, and his real name is something embarrassing like Humphrey Buttcheeks.") There was an old guy who looked... well, old. Molly had her doubts about such an old fogy teaching combat skills. Well, this was going to be interesting.

Apparently, they had already taken their things to their new respective rooms. Molly walked up to "Mr. Smith" (and couldn't help but giggle again at his lame name), and found out that she was in room 2. Whoever her roommate was, Molly hoped the other girl liked music. Especially her music. ("Please, let her not be a country fan.") Finding the room, Molly found her stuff had been brought in, but needed unpacking. No other one was there. Well, the meeting of roommates would have to wait. Molly picked a bed, and started getting stuff out and putting it away. Food was waiting outside, and she was kind of hungry...

Freyja

"Honestly..." Astrid muttered, walking up next to the other instructors just seconds before the students arrived. She was still wearing the same clothes she wore all the time and her guns were with her fully loaded and ready. She took out a pocket watch as she looked at the time. They were still early and on task, a wonderful way to start the year at least. As they all came out and Edwin gave his speech, she slowly sized everyone up and looked at all of them, judging them as they intently listened to what he had to say. Perhaps this would be a good year, perhaps she didn't need to get drunk anymore, perhaps...

And here comes the snark. She sighed as a girl simply responded to the last section about disobeying staff, treating it as a death threat. She closed her eyes for a moment and took another second or 5 to sigh slightly longer as she could already see potential issues. But no matter. As they were all dismissed, she likewise took her leave, walking back towards the house as she checked off mentally the work she had to do. She still had some paper work to file out and was slightly afraid that Victoria would appear on campus on the first day.

Nate Peterson, Aka Prophet

"Alright, Mr. Peterson, you are with Mr. Sam Bellamy in Room 5." Nate shook his hand and thanked the man with the obviously fabricated name, and headed into the house just in time to hear someone ask, "Nathaniel Peterson.... Who's that?"

"Uh, that would be me. But I prefer Nate." He said, stopping a little bit behind Sam with the strap of his duffle back resting on his shoulder. He was wearing a white t-shirt with an unbuttoned blue dressed shirt rolled up on the sleeves, jeans, and black Vans.

He was kind of confused; why was this (rather cute) girl asking who he was? He had made the local paper in Chicago, or rather, the story of a crook getting the snot knocked out of him by a blue-clad ghost made the paper. His name wasn't anywhere the event. Then it clicked. "Are you... Sam?" Nate asked tentatively. Why would they put him with a... Oh.

"I guess that We're roommates," Nate said with a smile.

Whitney Snyder, Aka Cinder

Whitney was the next one to walk up to the Mr. Smith to get her room. "Snyder," she told the man flippantly. Her first impressions of the instructors were the guy giving the speech had a rod up his ass, the headmaster was dopey, Wall was a rebel tough girl, Weinkauf was an Artist, and Mr. Smith was one of those old guys who tried to act "hip".

"Ah, Ms. Snyder. You are in Room 2."

"Thanks," Whitney said as she slipped in her earbuds and moved through the house, climbing up the stairs to her room. When she opened the door she saw her roommate was already there. "Aw rats!" She lightheartedly exclaimed. "I thought I was going to have the first pick." She giggled and moved over to the empty side of the room. "I'm Whitney," she said with a smile as she started opening her suitcase and transferring its contents to the nearby dresser.

The lighthearted remarks made Molly grin. This was apparently her new roommate, and if first impressions mattered, Molly was favorably impressed. The girl was a little shorter than she was, a blonde ("but hopefully not a ditz"), with long hair that was neatly kept back. But she seemed friendly.

Molly smiled. "Molly. Molly Shanahan. I'm from Edmonton. Just got started here, so if you wanted this side, we can switch. I'm pretty easy-going." With a flip of her curled straight lengths behind her ear, Molly said, "So, Whitney. I hope you aren't a country music fan, because that drives me nuts..."

Please, let the girl have good tastes in song choices and bands. Please, let there be no twang or people singing about bars, horses or small town families. Life was too short to have to be exposed constantly to such psychological warfare.

Sam giggled a bit as Nate's initial confusion before the guy went all calm on him. Smart fellow, it seemed. Sam made a v with his fingers before speaking.

"Sam Bellamy, that'd be me!" He spoke with enthusiasm.

He stuck out his tongue a bit before bumping into Nate before rushing into the building to find their room.

"Come on, roomy, let's find our beds!"

___________________________________

Charles finally approached the Mr. Smith - or rather just John - with the paper labelling where he'd be staying, and who he'd be staying with. Joseph Decker. He half-wondered about the guy, but, for the most part, he didn't really care.

He made his way into the building soon enough, and found his room quickly enough, but all he did was leave his bags on the bed and give Joseph a passing nod before he went back outside. He could put his stuff up later.

Charles found himself soon coming up next to Mr. Nantz. It was a little wierd seeing someone taller than him, but the younger man was most certainly denser. He coughed before speaking in a quiet manner in his deep voice.

"Um... Mr. Nantz? I'm Charles. Charles Kemp. I don't suppose my other stuff got here, yet, did it?"

Jessamyn Margaryan

Truth

Great. The coyote was staring at her and looking defensive, that was just what she needed. Not. She just put her hands in the air in a gesture that said she wasn’t doing anything wrong. “Good boy,” she said towards the coyote, and then the owner woke up. Hopefully she had good control over the thing. Jess relaxed a bit when she said something, because at least she was awake to do something in the event that Chahałhee decided to come after her for whatever reason.

“The name’s Jess. Jess Margaryan. Well, it’s actually Jessamyn, but the people that are close to me just call me Jess. You can call me whatever you want… Jess, Jessie, Jessamyn, Jessa-meen, I’ve heard all of it,” she said, getting over her nervousness and settling into her usual quick speaking tone. She was usually snarky or rude with people that she just met, but since she had to share a room with Mary, she decided that it was better to be friendly. She also didn’t want to risk getting her face clawed off in the middle of the night, so that was a factor in her decision to not find something snaky to say.

“That’s a nice… Dog you have there,” she added, not sure how to say the name correctly. “I take it we’ll be decent friends unless… Well, unless you’re not good at finding humor in the little things. Just don’t rat on me, kay?”

Mary noticed how Jess was looking at Chahałheeł as the girl spoke. Jess spoke of humor and blame..., she was a trickster. Mary could appreciate a good joke, to a certain degree.

Mary gave Jess a smile and said, "You and Chahałheeł should get along, fine. He is a coyote and you have a coyote spirit. I have my limits with his tricks, but on the whole, I forgive him a lot."

Just then, the alarm on Mary's mobile phone chimed, telling her to get ready for the pool party. Mary looked at Jess, "Did you bring swim wear?" Mary asked as she began to remove her travelling clothes and lay them on the bed.

Mary opened a dresser drawer and pulled out a bikini of a coppery brown color for herself. It went well with her dark complexion and black hair. She eyed Jess, who was a bit taller and a little bit fuller.

Mary decided to change the subject, "I'm a medicine woman. What do you do?"

"Haha, nah, that's alright. I don't care either way about the room, I'm just glad they aren't cramped." The room was a decent size, putting her dorm from her short stint in college to shame. It wasn't massive, but it left both girls with more than enough room for their stuff.

"I'm guessing you're passionate about music? Or at least passionate about your hatred of country. I'm not a fan of it myself, but I do have a broad taste." Whitney finished unpacking her clothes and turned her attention to a desk, presumably her's based on its location. She pulled out a laptop and plugged it into it would have a full battery when she needed it. More or less finished with moving in, she jumped on the bed, causing her to bounce up and down for a minute. "Hmm, not bad."

"So you're from Edmonton? That's in Canada, right? I'm from Kilkenny, Ireland. What are you in for?" She asked Molly, turning to look at her new roommate. "I do this..." Whitney clapped her hands together and a small pop of fire and smoke went off like a small firecracker as her powers ignited some dust and dead skin.

Nate smirked at Sam's antics and an idea popped into his head. He was suddenly engulfed in a swirling vortex of sapphire. When Sam made it into their room he found Nate already standing there as the sapphire glow was just fading. "Beat ya to it," Nate said with a grin. "What side of the room do you want? I don't care either way."

“A coyote spirit, eh? Always thought of myself as a lion. But some things made me rethink that, so maybe you’re right,” Jess said, moving back to her bag and looking through her things. She only really had a backpack, with just a couple of changes of clothes and some other things that she brought from home, like her laptop and her notebook and pencils. She also had her pistol there, but she didn’t take that out for now. It would seem strange to carry around when she was with her future allies, even if she did feel a bit unsafe when it wasn’t somewhere on her body, just because she didn’t have the kind of powers that she could protect herself with.

“Swimwear? Oh, no. I’m from pretty far north, there’s not really any beaches and it gets cold, so I don’t actually have any,” she shrugged, but then she chuckled to herself and smirked. “Not like I need to wear anything to swim, anyway. I’m sure the boys would like it if I didn’t… And a few of the girls, maybe,” she added, and after making the remark, she eyed up Mary and the bikini as if she was imagining what she looked like in it. And then she broke the eye contact after making her point, turning on her heel as she picked up her backpack and moved to put her clothes away.

“I uh… My power is kind of hard to explain, but long story short, it helps me know things. I can read a lot of really subtle information that most people miss. But I have to touch something to get info from it. And for objects, I can also read their history for the past couple of days. Really boring shit, I know. My dad is a speedster but my sister ended up with that power, not me,” she sighed.

James Keller

"OH GOD MY FUCKING EYES!" is never the scream you want to emit in front of your headmaster as you come off the ship taking to your new future.

Unfortunately, that's the exact scream James made as the rear ramp unfolded.

James, so used to the dark ship, not needing a cloak wherever he went, had had lots of fun with Umbra pranking people and doing stupid shit. Jumping through walls, sneaking up behind people, making invisible walls, the fun stuff. But in all the fun and excitement, he had been slightly unprepared for...sunlight.

Needless, to say, his damn eyes were on fire. And his bare arms too. Stumbling back into the shrinking pool of shadow behind him, clutching his face with more strings of random swear words and screams, skin burning with a familiar sensation. Pain. He had to pull it together...make something. He could feel Umbra writhing in her pack, feeling James' pain as clear as he did, as both fell to the ground, twisting. He needed to put something up.

Suddenly, everyone's shadows disappeared as a thin shadow wall appeared in front of James' face, blocking out the sun. The pain began to fade, but his skin still felt tender, and it was now very red, small blisters forming on his cheeks. He couldn't do that again, next time it could be serious. Sighing, he tore open his pack, digging out his long, black cloak, one that draped to his ankles to cover any bit of bare skin. After some fiddling, and many a "I told you not to wear a t-shirt!" from Umbra, his cloak was finally secured draping over his head to protect himself from the light.

Despite the pain it caused him, James had to admire the view as he strided out of the ship, boots clicking the floor. It was all rolling pastures, trees in the distance, and that house. White, and huge, huger than any house he'd seen aside from the movies on the telly. There was a sparkling pool to the side as well, crystal clear with a pristine white deck. Absolutely spotting, as those stupid American kids shows said.

Standing among the crowds of college-age or so students, he couldn't help but feel...excited. Energized. Joyous. He hadn't had those feelings in a long time, he hadn't felt so...alive. He was almost shaking from excitement by this point. I mean, what would he do back in Leicester? Get an engineering job, marry, have kids, retire, die? Here, he might actually do something, something that could really change lives.

The staff seemed alright. Paladin seemed like the wrong guy to cross, though, the guy was bloody ripped! He looked like a right old skin golem! Other than that, none of them really stood out to him, aside from John Smith, the most creative name in history. How much did his parents despise him!

According to this "John Smith", he was in Room 1. Room 1 it was. The halls were a bit winding, and there were many rooms, but James found it soon enough, mostly by following the multitude of other recruits swarming through the halls, many giving James a few curious glances for the odd cloak and huge satchel. He must look like some type of voodoo practitioner. But enough of that. He pushed the door open, to reveal....

A somewhat awkward looking guy, yelling "LEFT!" at empty space. As if on cue, James yelled "RIGHT!" directly afterwards, a cheeky grin on his face as he strode in.

"So you're the poor sod rooming with me? Awesome, the name's John Keller, but I prefer James, but definitely not Jim or Jimmy. Who're you?"
yea bro idk

Mary finished putting on her bikini. "I'm not that brave," she admitted. "At least not in a strange new place." Then she put on a light and gauzy white shirt.

"And there's no shame in being like Coyote," said Mary. "Other than the Great Spirit, there are few beings that can best him, though sometimes he can be overconfident and embarrasses himself."

She considered Jess' admission that she wasn't the most gifted child in her family. "About twelve years ago, the tribe's Medicine Man chose me and not my twin sister, to learn the old ways. I asked him why we couldn't both be Medicine Women. He said that when he looked into the future, she would choose a different path. I told Martha what he said and though she was a bit sad at first, she brightened up, saying she wanted to travel and see the world." Mary paused, "Now, the tribe has sent me away and Martha is back at the Reservation. I hope I can help her get her wish. That she can travel and see the world."

She brightened, "Let's go down to the pool. I'm sure Chahałheeł would like something off the grill."

Mary offered Jess her hand.

Joseph Decker

Joseph quickly stuffed his clothes into the drawers of his dresser and slid his empty suitcase under the bed, and decided to wait around for a second to see if his roommate showed. He didn't have to wait long at all. Joseph turned around, and his eyes widened as Charles came into the room. He managed to keep himself from going slack-jaw, but he couldn't quite collect himself to say hello. Whether or not it was for the best, the towering man dropped his stuff and headed out the door just as soon as he came in. "Well, hello, I guess," Joseph muttered to no one.

It was warmer than he expected, so he shrugged off his jacket, leaving him in a dark navy shirt with a geometric design. Joseph looked around the room a little bit more but decided to go down and enjoy the cookout instead of staring at the crown molding.

The teachers had reconvened to the back patio area. Grey was a little off to the side finishing the paperwork, but the others were sitting around talking. The Grosses and Aubry and started tossing a frisbee. Paladin had changed out of his suit in superhuman time and was now wearing a bright Hawaiian shirt, khaki shorts, and flipflops as he fired up a truly impressively large grill. He was just putting the first of the hamburgers on the grill when Charles approached him.

"Ah, Mr. Kemp! I was hoping you'd come to talk. I am not the one to ask about deliveries; that would be Mrs. Gross, the one with the curly brown hair over there. Heather!" The Headmaster called, causing Jacob to startle and fail to catch the frisby that collided with his face. "Sorry Jacob, but I need to borrow your Wife for a second."

"No harm done, Mr. Nantz," Jacob called across the yard as Heather made her way over, laughing her head off. "What do you need, Mr. Nantz?"

"Is Jacob alright?" he asked in a whisper that was still as loud as normal speech. "He's fine." Heather insisted. "Now what can I do for our student here?"

"Mr. Kemp here was wondering if his belongings have arrived." Heather smiled and shook Charles' hand as Paladin introduced him. "Well, judging by your impressive stature, I'm assuming you are talking about a very large and beautiful set of armor and several weapons? They are down in my workshop. Come find me later and we can get them moved to the ready room; we don't really allow you to have weapons above ground. Everyone else will have their weapons moved to the room tomorrow. Now I hope you're hungry: Mr. Nantz grills the best burger you'll ever eat, and we have barbeque and sides over by where Mr. Holland is standing."

Truth

Jess looked on awkwardly for a bit as Mary put on her bikini, eventually looking away from her and making sure all her things were put away before throwing her bag on her bed and shrugging. She considered saying something about the bikini, but she bit down on her tongue. Don’t offend your new roommate less than an hour after meeting them, she told herself. Not that it was her intent, but people reacted in different things and she still didn’t know if her new friend was as cool as her last best friend.

“Not everyone gets to do the exciting stuff, I guess. I’m only here right now because of that, otherwise I would be down in New York City or somewhere like that, working with big shot heroes and drinking with celebrities or something. I don’t know. I don’t know what the hell Mariam is up to these days, but it’s what she makes it sound like,” Jess said, getting a bit off track. “Sorry. That’s my sister’s name. Mariam. Me and her aren’t really on speaking terms, but that’s another story.”

She took Mary’s hand and followed her to the pool, and while she didn’t have any swimwear, she decided to improvise and make do with what she did have. She shed her leather jacket to reveal a white tank top, and then dropped her jeans. She’d just jump into the pool with the underwear she had on right now, it wasn’t like anyone would notice the difference once she was in the water. “I’m going to be honest. I don’t really have a clue how to swim. I’m not going to tell everyone that, though…”

Freak

Finally, a place that is not as flat as Oklahoma and not as vulnerable to tornadoes. Copper Bagge gleefully smiled as always the transport flew ever nearer to his new place of residence. Bits of static could be seen coming out the ends of his wild uncombed hair. "A nice humble abode it is, yet it stands more proud than any other house I have seen." mused Copper, to no one but himself, "Dullness begone."

Grabbing his bags containing his clothes and his Arc Gun, Copper proceed to follow the crowd for an introductory assembly. Listening to the speech from Mr. Holland, Copper toyed the idea of calling him Mr. Netherlands. He is not Dutch and that ruins half the fun. he thought. While the speech was going on, Copper could see a few quick glances coming from the instructors and even from the headmaster himself. He seem to stick out of the crowd with that smile of his, while most people smile out of joy, Copper's smile seems forced or malicious in nature as if he was thinking of a nasty prank.

Nobody else smiled as big or as long as Copper and he could see more serious expressions appearing the instructor's faces when it was his turn to get his room. "Room 6" said Mr. Smith, "And, I see why you are named 'Copper', it fits your hair color very well."

"Thank you." smiled Copper, as Mr. Smith gave him directions to his dorm. Seems he gets first pick as he was the first one to arrived. "Let's sleep Right." decided Copper, placing his bags on the beds located on the right side of the room. He took out his clothes and placed it in the dresser. His smile resided to a small grin as he pulled out his Arc Cannon as his last piece of luggage. Leaving his cannon on his bed, Copper proceeded to make his way to the backyard. The thought of potentially trying new foods brought back his giant ear-to-ear smile. Smile! Copper thought It's a good way to introduce oneself.

Whitney clapped her hands together and a small pop of fire and smoke went off like a small firecracker as her powers ignited some dust and dead skin.

So Whitney wasn't going to be breaking out into any line dances in the near future. Which was good. "Yeah, I don't know why country rubs me the wrong way. But glad to hear that you won't be playing it. I can get along with most things, just not twang."

Molly was beginning to like her new roommate. A Canadian and an Irish girl, paired up and so far things were looking good. Molly got a grin watching Whitney bounce on her bed.

When Whitney showed her fireworks, Molly gaped. "Wow! That was totally awesome. Do that again! So you're all about fireworks? Can you do Saturn Missiles? Sweetness!"

Now it was her turn to show and tell. Molly flipped her bangs back and said, "This is what I do." Then, grinning, one moment Molly was standing by her dresser looking at her roommate seated on the bed. Then the next moment Molly was standing on Whitney's bed, facing the same direction as before. And Whitney was sitting beside Molly's dresser, facing the bottom shelf.

"I can teleport people or things. But it's more like switching spots with two people, or two different things. As long as it's about the same size.

"So, you want to leave this here right now and get unpacked later? I'm kind of hungry..."

Then, realizing that it might be taken as rude to be standing on her roommate's bed, Molly turned and jumped off onto the floor.

Chahałheeł lost his wariness of the new human. As they walked, he would get close to her and inhale her scent. Once he got too close and his Mistress shooed him back, but she smiled at him so he would take his time learning about the new friend.

They walked out of the building and across open space to a place that was hard, like stone, and flat, but there was grass near by. In the center of the hard flatness was a huge area of water! It smelled a little odd but it looked very clear. This was... was a... pool! That's right. Mary took off most of her coverings and bathed in these things, sometimes. Even he had been in a pool, how had he forgotten? It had been some time. He wasn't terribly uncomfortable with the weather, so he didn't think he'd get in it..., unless there was a game involved.

The new friend removed some of her coverings. Chahałheeł, quietly went over to the coverings when he didn't think anyone was looking and gave them some good sniffs.... Remember this, so we don't go crazy thinking it's a stranger.

Mary said to Jess, "There's a public pool on the Reservation, otherwise I probably wouldn't have learned." Then, "Aren't those Olympic swimmers and divers so graceful? I'm nothing like that, but I'll do my best to help...." Then Mary saw what Chahałheeł was up to.

"Chahałheeł!" barked Mary.

The coyote looked at his Mistress and knew he'd overstepped a boundary. He smiled and trotted over to her. For her part, just looking at his face, Mary forgave him. She knelt down and embraced her four-legged friend.

"I'm sorry," said Mary to Jess. "He's kind of nosy. Shall we all grab a bite to eat first, or maybe try out the pool?"

Sam giggled a little as he ran through the halls to his new room, only to find Nate there already. He stifled a shocked laugh as he went wide eyes and raised his hands to his mouth.

"Super powers," he muttered to himself as he lowered his hands to reveal a smile, and sighed. "Shoulda known."

"Beat ya to it," Nate said with a grin. "What side of the room do you want? I don't care either way."

"I'll take the left," Sam said. "Right. Party time!"

And with that, he took off his blue top to reveal a tight, black tank top that accented his quite feminine form, before shifting through his bags to find a pair of dark blue swim trunks. As though he were alone, Sam nonchalantly undid his skirt and underwear (facing towards the wall, of course), and took off his red Converses and blue and white thigh-high stockings, before putting on his blue swimming trunks.

Then, Sam faced towards Nate, skipped over to the other guy, and spoke clearly.

"I bet I can beat you to the pool," he said. "In fact, I think you'll -" he flicked a soft finger over Nate's nose. " - stay right here."

That ought to by me five, maybe ten minutes. More than enough time to get to the pool.

Sam happily skipped down from his room to the outside, finding himself enjoying the tantalizing smell of grilled patties.

Whitney Snyder, Aka Cinder

Molly's demonstration left Whitney a little disoriented, but then her face broke into a massive smile. "Oh my God that was awesome!" She turned and beamed at Molly, "Do that again! Oh... Wait a second." Whitney gripped her stomach and looked a little green. "Let's hold off for a bit," She said with a smile and a slight laugh. "Yeah, let's go get something to eat. I'm starving! Or I will be once my stomach settles," She quipped bumping Molly playfully.

Whitney started for the door, but stopped and pulled out a small ball bearing from her pocket. "You want to see some more fireworks? Watch this." She held the steel ball between her fingers and glowing lines began to etch themselves into its surface. The Irish girl raised her eyebrows rapidly and stepped out into the call, rolling the bearing down the hall. Ducking back into the room she raised her index finger and mouthed the words "Wait for it..." A second later a loud boom rang out from down the hall.

"Now let's get some food!"

Nate Peterson, Aka Prophet

Nate laughed at Sam's astonishment. "Teleporter, well, sort of..." He said trailing off. Nate flushed when Sam started to undress, not sure how he should really react; regardless, Sam had turned, and Nate followed suit. Tossing his duffle on the bed, Nate unzipped the bag, but turned back when he heard Sam skipping over to him.

"I bet I can beat you to the pool," he said. "In fact, I think you'll -" he flicked a soft finger over Nate's nose. " - stay right here."

Nate grinned and attempted to tap into the Void, but his will hit a mental wall. He furrowed his brow and started for the door, but his feet just... didn't want to move. "Super powers. Shoulda known." He wiggled his toes, but for several minutes he just couldn't make himself walk from the spot he was in.

Finally, he felt whatever fog he was under fade, and he turned to his bag. Nate stripped off his clothes and grabbed his swimming shorts and pulled on one of his button-up shirts and flip-flops. Nate walked over to the window and opened it. Their room was on the second floor, but Nate took a running start and dove out the opening. His body was engulfed in blue energy and he curved up and through the air, flying over the building and coming down to land next to Sam. The energy shell evaporated, and Nate grinned at Sam. "Nice trick, but you can't shake me forever." He clapped Sam on the back and walked over to get him some food; he had several minutes of eating to catch up on.

Mi Na was the last person on the concrete pad. No one had noticed her. And why should they? She wore a simple black knee length skirt, a blue blouse, and a black blazer over that, simple makeup and a pair of simple sapphire earrings coming together to make a simple but pretty enough outfit. Beautiful, but without personality. That is what she was called. That is what she was. She watched as others either approached the teachers to find their room schedule or brazenly entered the mansion, determined to find their own way. She wished she could be like them, free to do their own thing and not caring if they messed up. She heard them chatter, and watched as the noise and excitement moved out of range. She watched as even the teachers walked away, completely overlooking her. She stood there, perfectly still, her posture ramrod straight, poised with one and folded perfectly in front of her and the other artfully but forcefully on the handle of her suitcase. The pose her mother taught her when she first began competing internationally, for when the cameras came. Never many, not as many as back in her mother's day, but enough to feed the lust for success and fame her mother felt.

She stood on the lonely landing pad, her hair barely stirred by the breeze. It had to have been at least ten minutes, perhaps more. Why did she let this happen to herself? Always having to have permission or receive orders. All she had to do was find that John Smith man and ask him which room she was in. But it was too late, the moment had passed. It would be disrespectful to interrupt her instructor when not permitted. Carefully, perfectly, she delicately began to wheel her suitcase towards the house, across the pad. She glided in her shoes, the high heels clacking quietly on the hard surface. The breeze began to pick up, carrying petals from a nearby field. What a beautiful place, holding such a terrifying secret.

The white house loomed before her. A symbol of her newfound freedom. But also her new prison. She could never go back, not now. Her mother would never allow it, and her father never seemed to care what happened to her. He had never cared. If he knew about her powers he might have . . . but her mother had chosen to keep that secret. It was not Mi Na's to share. She stepped through the doorway, and the blast of the air conditioning hit her, tearing away the warmth that the Sun had given her outside. Hearing voices and using common sense, she turned towards the sound, making her way to where she saw several students unpacking. She walked past room after room, each with at least one suitcase on each bed. Four, five six . . . seven. The last room, at the end of the hall. It was directly at the end, it's door facing the rest of the hall down, as if in defiance of them. Daring to be opened. This had to be her room, as the rest of the rooms were already occupied.

She turned the doorknob, a simple affair, and opened the thick wooden door. It opened to reveal a room, with a large bay window straight ahead with a sitting area, and a bed to either side. This room seemed bigger than the others, perhaps just a metre or two wider, but it felt like a continent's worth. It was plain, as if waiting for a personality to claim it and make it their own. This room would be waiting a lot longer if that was the case.

She carefully closed the door and set her case down. She bowed her head and muttered a quick prayer. She wasn't sure to what, but her mother had taught her to look like she was praying before a big routine, because it looked good for the cameras. The habit had caught on and now she instinctively turned to the universe when she felt overwhelmed, which had been happening a lot recently. She prayed that her life would settle down, that she could be the girl she had always wanted to be, and that people would accept her. After a minute her head rose and she began to methodically and mechanically unpack her perfectly folded clothes, perfectly putting them away in the small wardrobe across from the foot of her bed where a solid wooden chest rested. She then set her suitcase in the chest and closed it.

Her clothes. That was all she brought; all she had. She had never been allowed any personal effects, as they would distract her. On this island, she didn't see how she could find any either. She sat down on her bed primly, smoothed her skirt, and looked out the window at the field below and the forests. Not knowing how to use any "free time" she had, she resolved to wait for the next meal to be called.

She watched as the clouds moved across the sky.
