Introduction

The world stood in awe when the first superhumans emerged from obscurity. They moved mountains and controlled the forces of nature; gods among men. Some chose to use their power for evil and selfish goals, but heroes rose to meet their challenge. The endless battle of good and evil donned a new face. At first, International bodies attempted to contain and study these new metahumans. Organizations like CADMUS were created, but they ostracised the good along with the bad. Metahumans were hunted like animals, but some stood up and fought back. CADMUS was disbanded, and ARGUS took its place. Superheroes became sanctioned, and they banded together into numerous teams to fight the growing threat of supervillains.

A "Golden Age" of Heroes developed as the world was saved from sure destruction countless times. The second and third generation of heroes took the reins and kept the villains at bay. But then Villains unleashed a new reign of terror. The world of embroiled in war with metahumans on the front lines. Millions of lives were lost and the fighting continued for years. In the end, the fourth generation of heroes emerged victorious, but with a devastating toll. The world was left vulnerable with such a limited number of heroes alive to protect it. A consortium of heroes came together to formulate a plan to secure the future. The Novum Saeculum project was created to train metahumans; the next generation of Superheroes.

Retired heroes from numerous teams volunteered their services, and resources to make the Novum Saeculum Academy the most well-equipped training environment on the planet. Hidden away on a private Island, the Academy boasts several square kilometers of private forest, advanced training facilities and one of the most advanced security systems on the planet. Students who have powers or who show potential to develop powers are tracked for several years before they are offered admission. Potentials are highly screened to make sure they are mentally and emotionally capable of the stresses of being a hero.

Accepted students are gathered together taken in secrecy to the Island and shown the ropes. The tests are brutal and dangerous, but extremely comprehensive. Students will be taught to deal with any situation they may face. The school comes with risks, however, there has not been a fatality in several years.

Word from the OP
Hello and welcome to another installment of Are We heroes! I've never done an academy style RP, but let's hope for the best. You will be a new student at the Novum Saeculum academy. I like to allow for a lot of freedom in my RPs, but there are some things that will be limited. This is set in a modern day in a world that has had active superhumans for several years. "Metahuman" is the broad term used to describe any humans that possess superpowers, but powers can come from mutations, magic, or cosmic events. The academy will accept those with any kinds of powers, but they are wary of students that show signs of abusing their powers.

Your character will become a member of what is considered a "fifth generation" hero. Heroes that are currently active are what's known as fourth generation heroes. Nearly all of the first generation heroes are dead, and the second and third generations of heroes are retired.

During your time at the academy, your hero will be put through rigorous tests, and be sent on missions to deal with real supervillain threats. Follow orders and you are guaranteed a good chance of making it. Students who prove themselves can sometimes be offered a position on a team of superheroes.

The Academy
The Academy was created ten years ago and has trained dozens of new heroes over the years. Class sizes are small and kept that way purposefully so.

More information regarding the new location is WIP

Name: William Nantz
Alias: Paladin
Appearance:
Image

Gender: Male
Age: 82
Build: 7' 7", 350 lbs

Powers:
  • Astral Armor & Weapons: Paladin can at will summon golden Astral armor that encases his whole body, as well as an assortment of weapons including his favorite, a war-hammer, a greatsword, or a war-ax.
  • Might of Kings: Paladin is larger than most men, and has superhuman strength and stamina. It is also assumed to be the cause of his apparent longevity.
  • Divine Shield: In conjunction with the Astral armor, Paladin summons an astral shield that is much more durable than the rest of his armor. It can block most attacks, both natural and magical. He can also cause the shield to dissipate and form as a protective forcefield around a single target where it is all but indestructible.
  • Healing Hands: Can heal almost any wound, even near-fatal ones almost instantly.
  • Shepherd's Post: Paladin's powers grow exponentially more powerful when he is around allies that he is protecting.

Drawbacks:
The Price of Sacrifice: Paladin's powers cannot be used selfishly. He must be either fighting to protect someone or fighting for a just cause; otherwise, his powers will abandon him. His healing hands do not magically cure the wound but transfer it to himself. If he heals a broken leg, his leg will be broken in turn. It will heal at an accelerated rate, but he must feel all the pain. Divine Sheild cannot be used by Paladin and used to protect himself and someone else at the same time, and when used on another person it can take extreme damage, but only for a limited time.

Personality:Jovial and larger than life, William has a very grandfather quality about him. He is quick to laugh and comfort, but when someone threatens the school his emotions turn to steel; his rage won't end until either he or the threat are lying broken on the ground. He is not the smartest man and is more willing to solve confrontations with fists than tactics, but responsibility and old age have mellowed his aggressive tendencies.

Nationality: American
Hometown: Covington, Virginia

Bio: William was a soldier during the Vietnam war, and served in the United States Army as a field medic. He was and is a man of strong faith, and one night his company came under heavy mortar fire. He prayed that they would be spared, and he would give himself if they could live. When they received reinforcements in the morning, they found craters all around their location, but none within their actual campsite. William was the only one that sustained injuries; A broken leg, and multiple lacerations consistent with shrapnel, but no actual shrapnel was extracted. He survived the injuries and was honorably discharged from the Military. After that, he rebranded himself Paladin, and went on to serve on multiple superhero teams. He was the rival of several villains such as Rook and Crimson Titan before officially going into retirement in the early 90's.

Roster

    Instructors
    Name: Edwin Holland
    Alias: Grey
    Appearance:
    Image

    Gender: Male
    Age: 46
    Build: 5' 7"

Powers: A form of Clairvoyance: Can extend his sight and hearing from his physical body, move it through objects and around walls. This comes with the added abilities to see some things that normal humans can't, like things beyond the normal human spectrum. He can also project his sight into photographs and look around, but everything will be still-frame. Has no maximum range.

Drawbacks and Limitations: Even though he has unlimited range on his clairvoyant abilities, he can only move his vantage point at normal human walk/run speed, so it is not feasible to use it to see something on the other side of the planet as that would take him the same amount of time to walk/run there.
He also becomes blind and deaf in his physical body while his powers are in use.

Personality: Holland doesn't seem to bear many emotions, his face is almost always neutral. He will occasionally crack a smile but is largely a taskmaster focused on the job.

    Nationality: British
    Hometown: London
Bio: Edwin Holland was born with his Clairvoyant abilities but didn't understand that he was different or how to control the powers until he was about five years of age. Public school was a breeze for him, all the answers were constantly within his reach, which probably caused the boredom with education that didn't encourage him to pursue extended learning at a university. He became a police officer with London's Metropolitan Police and his abilities served him well with an outstanding service record. He was free from much of the scrutiny of being a superhuman as England was one of the last nations to comply with the UN's ARGUS mandate, but he was eventually registered. He soon became a detective with an impressive arrest record, making him one of the best of Scotland Yard. Argus approached him, offering a leadership position for a new investigatory team. He accepted largely out of curiosity and became responsible for keeping other heroes in check. Holland slowly grew to be quite fond of his team, seeing them as family. They weren't given official nicknames, but that didn't stop the younger agents of his team from calling him Grey due to the foggy color his eyes turn when he uses his powers.

After working for Argus for several years Holland retired to work with the Academy. He teaches several classes including tactical operations.
    Name: John Smith
    Appearance:
    Image

    Gender:Male
Age: Your guess is as good as anyone's
    Build:6' 0"

    Powers: Regenerative Immortality

Personality: Mysterious and pragmatic, John never tells you more than you absolutely have to know. He is manipulative and keen, but not necessarily malicious or good. He usually wears a cocky grin but can be driven to rage.

    Nationality: ?
    Hometown: ?
Bio:John Smith was a name given to him sometime in the Fifties. Evidence of him stretches back through most of recorded history, mostly he is recorded as being a trickster, or a stranger who came on the scene, caused a commotion, and then disappeared. Some records report he has more of sinister nature than he lets on. He has interacted with numerous heroes over the years and helped save the world once or twice. His role at the academy isn't immediately apparent, but he seems to act as some sort of councilor.
    Name: Aubrey Wall
    Alias: Nyx
    Appearance:
    Image

    Gender:
    Age: 28
    Build: 5' 4"

    Powers:
    • Enhanced mental speed and cognition
    • Combat Mimicry- Can nearly instantly learn and copy skills, particularly hand-to-hand combat.

    Equipment:

Personality: Slightly rebellious and free-spirited, although she can take orders (sort of). She is friendly enough.

    Nationality: Hispanic
    Hometown: Palm Springs, CA
Bio: Aubry's father was a researcher with the Paragon Project, an R&D branch of Argus. Aubry was born with a neurologically degenerative disease, but her father was determined to save her. Applying his research, he gave her an experimental drug designed to trigger neurogenesis and speed up electrical impulses in the brain. The treatment worked, and her condition was all but cured. Her father died of natural conditions when she was 19, and the Paragon Project reached out to Aubry to help continue the research. They Introduced her to a young couple, Jacob and Heather Gross: one an engineer, and the other a biologist who had been studying her father's work. The trio developed a serum to drastically increase the neural conductivity in Aubry's brain, allowing her to slow down the world around her to a near standstill, allowing her to plan out her thoughts with superhuman precision. Heather developed the mobility armor to boost Aubry's physical speed, and Aubry trained around the clock to learn martial arts and marksmanship. Nyx was born. She was employed as a skilled spy and assassin by Argus until the Paragon Project was destroyed in a villain attack. Aubry managed to save Jacob and Heather, but the Nyx project was terminated by Argus. Cypher, one of the heroes who helped found the Academy, offered the trio positions at the Academy where they would be expected to teach students in exchange for funding for their research.

Aubry teaches hand to hand combat and coaches physical training.

Skills: Hand-to hand combat, infiltration, espianoge, assasinations, etc.
    Name: Richard Weinkauf
Alias: Richard has gone by the name, "The Artisan"

Appearance:Richard kind of looks like this out of costume
    Image

In costume, Richard is not one for a superhero outfit with spandex, a cape, colored boots, or so on. Instead, he prefers a tan trench coat, black fedora, gloves and a simple mask that covers his head and face. These have been modified in recent years, so that there also is some flexible body armor in the coat, and even some in the hat.

    Gender: Male
    Age: 65
Build: Average. A little tall at 6'1, Richard also weighs 220 lbs. He steadfastly begins every day with some exercise.
    Sexual orientation: Straight.

    Powers:
Artistic Realities - Richard's main ability is the power to make art real, by creating a "new reality" where the work of art comes to life and is able to interact with characters. This applies to classic works of "high" art that might be found in a museum, not comic art. The effect is that Richard can make what the drawing, painting, sculpture, or other portrays, to appear and the world and background they appear in. These "artistic appearances" have a boundary that separates them from the real world. He can put other characters in these new artistic realities, and what was portrayed, now becomes their new world (so these other characters can get lost, wounded, disoriented, etc). In this artistic reality, Richard can also manipulate it in some ways. (He once made a person trapped in a complicated abstract art piece suffer as if he had overdosed on PSD).
Peoplecan see the boundary that leads into the artistic reality from the outside, but cannot see any boundary or "outside" to reality if they are in this "artistic reality". If anyone crosses the boundary, they are in there too. Those inside who have technological sensors can now only scan what happens in that new "artistic reality" and not the real world. Only Richard can let people out, which happens either voluntarily, or if Richard loses concentration (these worlds exist only as long as Richard can concentrate on them, which also means he can only have one "artistic new reality" up and running at a time.) The range for these artistic realities is within Richard's sight, but Richard is more likely to use this ability in closer range to him than further away. (It is easier to concentrate).
The artistic reality is like a small pocket dimension that Richard creates and pulls local people into at will, with concentration. There is a doorway that is easily seen, that is a barrier to the real world. It's a one way trip through the door, however. People that Richard pulls in, and anyone who stumbles through the doorway, are trapped in this new pocket dimension-like type until Richard lets them out. (Richard himself would be immune to that and could leave as he wished). People can also look in the doorway and see what's going on inside it. Doorway appear at an arbitrary location, but they are usually near enough to Richard so he can concentrate better. Say within ten yards or so.

Statue Physiology - Richard can also turn himself into a living statue or sculpture. It has to be a statue that's already created, and not one from Richard's imagination. (He has to see the details). In this state, his body becomes entirely that material all the way through. So, for example, if Richard's arm were to be blasted off by a laser, it would be possible for a sculptor to re-attach his arm in that state, and for Richard to suffer minimal effects when he returned to his human form. There would still be noticeable effects, however, like a visible scar.

Artistic Teleportation - Richard is able to teleport himself, and the things he carries and wears, by art. Whatever the picture or print is, Richard can teleport to either a) the gallery that painting is in; or b) a scene very similar to that painting. The spatial limit that Richard can teleport to is within the city he is in. That means, if Richard were to use this ability by looking at a print of the Mona Lisa, he would not be able to teleport to Paris - though he might be able to teleport to a gift shop at a local gallery that had a Mona Lisa print on display. Richard needs to see the artwork to be able to teleport. Again, this only applies to "high" art of a proven pedigree, and not comic art, graffiti or even new artwork by aspiring artists.

    Drawbacks and Limitations:
    - Richard has no super abilities in fighting. He's a fit, older man, but very poor in almost any combat with another super person.
    - Richard depends a lot on his journal. If he loses that, or finds himself away from other art he can't get the details for well, he's very powerless.
    - Richard can only do one artistic reality at a time. He has to concentrate on it, which means he is exposed and vulnerable to anyone else not in his artistic reality.

    Equipment:
For the limitations and uses on his powers given above, Richard carries a journal that has several prints of works of art that he finds useful for turning into new "realities." Also several prints of statues and sculptures. In addition, Richard carries a cellphone, his wallet and keys. He owns a car - a Chevy Impala. He also carries an artistic sketchbook, some pencils for drawing (different artistic varieties), a pencil sharpener, and a blotter.

Richard's trench coat is now armored, as is his fedora, thanks to an inventor friend. They are bulletproof, water proof, flame resistant, and acid resistant.
The fedora will prevent Richard from head injuries but cannot stop attacks to his face or the back of his head.

Personality: Calm. Perceptive. Logical, but in the sense of an artist's logic and not a mathematician's. A friendly neighbor, and a teacher who genuinely is interested in helping young people succeed in more than just art.

    Nationality: American
Hometown: Richard has taught in three high schools, including Colorado Springs, CO and Phoenix, AZ. For a while, he also lived outside of Chadron, NE and had been moving from location to location due to the prior hostilities against mutants.

    Bio:
Richard Weinkauf is a 65 year old formerly retired art teacher who has now taken teaching back up. Art is Richard's life-long passion. He went into teaching because he enjoyed it and it gave him the ability to be around art permanently. He has taught in three high schools, most recently in Phoenix. He was forced into early retirement in cost-cutting moves, and was somewhat bitter about it for a while. Richard has continued creating art throughout his life, and has had some of his works on display in small shows and museums. He is not known for his artwork by the general public, and few specialists would recognize his name, even though he remembers opportunities that might have given him his break had things turned out differently.

Richard is generally cynical of political promises, agencies and politics in general. Richard prefers to keep his head low instead of drawing attention to himself.

Richard is a widower. His wife, Mary, died decades ago in a car accident. He never remarried. Richard has an adult son, Paul, 35 years old, who he is estranged from. Richard raised Paul alone as a single father. Paul has no powers of his own, and is distrustful of super-powered people and meta-humans in general. Richard wishes that the division in their relationship was healed, but Paul remains unwilling.

Richard was 25 when his powers manifested themselves. He was showing his young son Paul some of the classic art in his books, and ended up imprisoning Paul in a painting depicting the Civil War. After he realized what had happened, he ended the artistic reality. But that set off a chain of events in Paul's life that only led him to grow ever more distrustful of his father. Richard became a vigilante after much soul searching. Tired of the violence in the city, he set out to take matters into his own artistic hands.

His desire for justice was short-lived. About the time when the CADMUS agency first began targeting mutants, a group devoted to standing up for mutants heard of Richard and sought him out. Tracking him down to Phoenix, Richard met Prophet, Arsenal, and others, who convinced him to come with them for his safety. They made it to Chadron, Nebraska, and were there for a little while before the CADMUS agency attacked - partially due to Richard's fault, but no one had ever connected the dots why. When Arsenal, Prophet and others he knew were asked to begin the Academy to train the next generation of powered students, they asked Richard if he wanted to resume teaching, and Richard jumped at the chance. He now teaches art, combat preparedness and justice courses.

Skills: Richard possesses an artist's eye for detail and a good memory. He has skill in several kinds of art (mostly painting, some sculpting and drawing). He is an experienced teacher. Richard is also well-versed in art history and considers himself cultured. He speaks German fluently.
Flaws: Richard's son, Paul, remains a possible enemy, though his location has been hidden from Richard for many years. Though Richard keeps up with his daily exercises, he is still an older man and thus occasionally needs time to catch his breath. Doesn't see the need for the newest and latest in technology, and so he isn't as tech-literate as his students.

    Additional Info:
Theme song: Richard goes classical, impressionistic - just like some artists he likes.

RP Example (if you wanted to know. These are the old examples I gave last time, but I can get something more current if you prefer.) First example, another superhero RP.
Second example, a superhero comedy RP
Third example, a FT nation space RP
    Name: Lee Edwin Roberts
    Alias: The Pilot
Appearance: A mature and very physically fit man, clean shaven with short gray hair.
    Image
    Gender: Male
    Age: 60
Build: Trim, with well defined muscles.
    Sexual Orientation: Hetero.

    Powers: Eidetic Memory. Personal Discipline.

Drawbacks: Asperger Syndrome, does not deal well with crowds or idiots. Only really feels happy when piloting or teaching, bit of a hard-ass.

Equipment: Varies depending on the vehicle (Small Submarines, Surface Watercraft, Ground Effect Vehicles, Land Transports, Aircraft).

Personality: Chariot Racer. Loves mechanized transport. Loves to talk about it. Loves to teach about it.

    Nationality: Australian.
    Hometown: Digger’s Rest (33km n-w of Melbourne)

Bio: Lee Roberts is a retired Test Pilot for numerous vehicle manufacturers. Growing up, he loved working on cars and modifying them for races at the local drag strip.

In the military, his eidetic memory allowed him to memorize any operating and repair manuals for any vehicle he was interested in piloting. Often got into trouble for insubordination, before he was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome and was given a medical discharge.

Contacts made in the military, impressed with his abilities, if not his personality, secured him his early positions with vehicle manufactures and made those companies aware of his Asperger Syndrome. Once given the proper chance with understanding employers, Roberts thrived.

As the Novum Saeculum was looking for an instructor for various vehicles, Robert's name came up on practically every type of vehicle and he was offered the teaching position.

    Other staff
Name: Jacob and Heather Gross (Pronounced Grahs, not gross as in "ew")
    Appearance:
    ImageImage

    Age: 31 and 30

Bio: Jacob is a doctor and biologist specializing in biochemistry. He helped make the second version of the formula Aubry's father created. He serves as the Academy's resident nurse, doctor, and emergency surgeon. Heather, on the other hand, is a brilliant engineer who built Aubry's mechanically enhanced armor. She acts as a kind of handyman around the school and keeps all of their machines in working order.
    Name: Marko Merkas
    Alias: Hellhound

    Appearance:
    Image

    Gender: Male
    Age: 143
    Build: 6' 3"

    Powers:
    • Scalable strength
    • Supernatural reflexes, agility, and speed
    • Heightened Senses
    • Feral Form

Bio: A Croatian national, Marko is much older than he looks, his history stretching back nearly 100 years before the St. Petersburg incident. Due to his unusual appearance, a result of his powers, Marko lived an isolated life; hiding from people and metas alike.

Over the course of his long life, Marko soon became the acquaintance of a Gifted who lived alone with his infant daughter in the cold isolation of Siberia. Their relationship was business at first, Marko kept them supplied, and the man provided him charms to hide is appearance. The arrangement came to a
screeching halt when CADMUS caught wind of the strange man in the cold. Marko came to their usual meeting spot to find a host of dead agents, their blood draining out onto the pristine snow. He pressed on to the cabin to find it surrounded. Enraged, he lay waste to the squadron, ripping them to shreds, becoming more animalistic with each kill. Marco ran to the house after dispatching the government goons and found his ‘friend’ bleeding out from a gunshot wound. With his dying breath, the man offered Marko a final charm that he claimed would make him look normal forever.

He took him at his word, and put it on, but it was all a rouse. The whole time, he had just been gaining Marco’s friendship just so he would take care of the man’s (now 15 years old) daughter. Forced by the man’s magic, Marko was compelled to protect the girl. His appearance and her wanted status made traditional travel avenues impossible, and her father’s wishes was that the girl be taken to the CADMUS Resistance in America. So, they walked.
Marco made good on his involuntary promise, and delivered the girl safely to the Resistance who then got in contact with the Watchers…

Since then, Marco has worked alongside John and Somnus on occasion, and is considered one of the most deadly metahumans in the world…

    Name: Nathaniel (Nate) Peterson
    Alias: Prophet
    Appearance:
    Image

    Gender: male
    Age: 20
    Build: 5' 11", 140 lbs
    Sexual orientation: Straight*

    Powers:
    • Void Walker: Prophet is infused with the energy of another primordial dimension that allows him to open breaches into this dimension and allow him to pass into it, and exit it at will. Traveling distances in the Void moves exponentially in the real world. He can effectively teleport with this ability, but it isn't instantaneous for distances of more than 50 ft.
    • Prophecy: Prophet is linked to the void which has a different timeline to that of our dimension. He can focus on certain events, and can inconsistently see glimpses of a possible outcome of the future. Most often the visions find him. He can get 'micro-flashes' where he senses imminent events, such as someone pointing a gun at him and he ducks out of instinct.
    • BEC Suit: BEC (Bose-Einstein condensate: a state of matter where atoms stop behaving as individual particles.) is the primary matter that the void is comprised of. He can summon it from the void and cause it to form a protective suit around him. It is a dark blue suit with a phantom-like blue cape (like a ghostly blue spawn) When he has the suit manifested he can levitate by channeling Void energy ( a form of extra-dimensional energy). He also has enhanced speed and strength when the suit is manifested. (I drew inspiration for this character from the movie Spectral, and he can do stuff kinda like This The main difference is that he is entirely corporeal at all times.)
    • Void Blast: Prophet can fire blasts of void energy from his hands. Looks like this sorta

Drawbacks and Limitations: BEC cannot pass through ceramics which is a nearly perfect armor against his powers. Likewise, Iron can disrupt BEC forms and cause them to 'flicker' in and out of reality as long as contact persists.
Nate can only teleport instanteously for distances of 50 ft or less, but he still has to open an entry and exit portal. His strength is enhanced and he can punch quickly with the armor, but he isn't anywhere close to someone with proper superstrength.

He also can't control the visions he sees; they come when they want.

    Equipment: None

Personality: Happy and upbeat on the outside, but fears his powers. Nate has been known to have a bleeding heart; he'll give you the shirt off of his back, or punch you in the face if you look at someone he cares about in a malicious way. With the emergence of his powers, he has become more guarded and reclusive. This also means he's more nervous, which means he uses his humor to mask it.

    Nationality: American
    Hometown: Monee, Il
Bio: The first four years of Nate's life were, for the most part, normal. His parents owned a small home in Illinois, a few miles south of Chicago. His mom stayed at home and took care of him, and his dad was a cop. None of them really gave any thought to the "clinical trials" Mrs. Peterson had been involved in a little over four years ago until strange things started happening with Nate. Ever so rarely, a small flash of blue light would wake his parents up at night. Eventually, after buying a security camera, they discovered that Nate was the source of the late night fireworks. Slightly worried, they took him to numerous pediatricians and doctors, but they couldn't find anything wrong about him, except he was a little underweight. Frustrated, but defeated, they just kept going on despite the increasing strangeness. Nate soon started drawing pictures of things that hadn't happened yet, like a bad car accident down the street, or a shooting star. Expanding their search from beyond scientific explanations, they sought out priests and spiritual healers, but still found nothing; until a strange man showed up at their door and announced himself as John Smith.

He told them that their son was special and that he knew how to help them, but they needed to let him take Nate for their own safety. The obviously refused immediately, but it would prove to be a fatal mistake. One night, Nate had a terrible dream. A storm came from the place he saw during the flashes: it came from the Void and took away everything he loved. The next morning, he woke up to firefighters and emergency responders finding him unscathed in the rubble of his home. His powers had unleashed themselves: Void energy erupted from him and smashed his house to smithereens, along with his parents. The only thing he really remembers from that day was the most intense fear he had ever felt in his life, and a man standing in the crowd. He was the only one watching Nate and not looking at the destroyed house.

With no surviving relatives, he was thrust into the system where he bounced around from home to home after being repeatedly kicked out for accidentally destroying things. When he turned 18, Nate found an apartment as soon as he could and hurried to finish high school. His powers kept growing, but he tried to hide them, keeping a low profile. He took a few courses at a community college and got a job as a janitor that earned him enough rent to get a basement apartment in Chicago. He had learned about his powers over the years and was thrust unwillingly into using them to break up a mugging. After making sure the violated party was unharmed, he quickly chased after the culprit; his prophecy leading him right to them. One blast was all it took to knock them out cold. Nate left an anonymous tip for the police and opened a breach that took him back to his apartment. After some soul-searching, he decided to give the vigilante gig a serious try, but then he was contacted by the Academy. And he immediately accepted.

Skills: Nate is highly mobile and packs a decent punch
Flaws: He finds himself at a slight deficit when fighting opponents who specialize in combat or who have destructive abilities. His forsight is also very inconsistent, coming at random times.

    Name: Mary Santiago
    Alias: Windtalker
    Appearance:
Five and a half feet tall. Her build was trim and athletic. The moccasins on her feet seemed to be made of horse leather. Above those, she wore leggings from the hide of bighorn sheep. Going up from there was a very short skirt which looked to be made of mountain lion skin. Her midriff was exposed. A capelet of black bearskin covered her shoulders and down over all but the very bottom of her breasts. A mask of reptile skin covered her face from her hairline just below her chin, black with irregular patterns of red, probably gila monster, concealing her face and her secrets while her eyes shone through its eye holes like dim malignant stars. Owl feathers were tied into her long and black hair. Whatever skin was not covered by her clothing was of a reddish brown color and upon it was either painted, or tattooed, with a number mystic symbols.
    Image
    Gender: Female
    Age: 19
    Build: Slender and Athletic.
    Sexual orientation: Bi.
Powers: Clairvoyance, Dream Magic, Illusionary Normal Appearance (hide Skinwalker appearance), Medium, Radio Communications, Skinwalker (shape shifter), Spiritual Fire, Unknowable, Very Hard to Kill.

    Drawbacks and Limitations:
Clairvoyance has a 19 mile (30.5 km) radius and can be blocked by mystic measures. Any size flame can be used, however smaller flames require greater concentration and stamina.
Dream Magic requires ritual herbs and ceremony.
Illusionary Normal Appearance can be maintained for one hundred minutes per day, beginning at dawn.
Medium requires ritual herbs and ceremony.
Radio Communications requires Radio Transceiver and Radio Transceiver Units in the field.
Skinwalker requires a “Medicine bag of Skins” mostly animals of the North American southwest.
Spiritual Fire is an innate power/skill and is a moveable one meter ball of fire that only burns things and beings not fully protected by a corporeal body. It can be active for ten minutes and requires a rest period of twice the active time used.
Unknowable requires a “Mask of Mystery” and protects the wearer from telepathy and cognitive powers aimed at discovering information about the wearer.
Very Hard to Kill because Yee Naaldooshii can only be killed by someone saying their true name, in their presence. Damage to her body that would normally kill a human causes her to become a dust-devil and she will be able to reconstitute her body in about a minute or so. Receiving killing damage in rapid succession after reconstituting is tiring to her and she would likely attempt to flee and after being destroyed three times. She does not need to breath. She cannot be starved to death, but she will take on a starved appearance if deprived of food. Being Very Hard to Kill does not stop her from being captured and held in a sufficiently designed prison.

Equipment: Bow and Quiver of Arrows, Fire (usually in a brazier, campfire or spiritual fire), Mask of Mystery, Medicine bag of Skins, Radio Transceiver, Traditional Navajo Medicines.

Personality Archtype: The (Damned) Magician. “I make things happen (whether you like it or not).” Secretive.

    Nationality: Navajo
    Hometown: Cameron, Arizona, U.S.A.
Bio: At a young age, Mary was singled out as a future medicine woman. Her childhood was actually quite normal among the other children of her age, except the time that she spent with the elders and medicine men.
At the age of seventeen, she received an offer of a scholarship the Novum Saeculum Academy as a result from letters between former veterans (one a member of the tribe and the other a staff member at the Academy).
Shortly after beginning attending the Academy, during a trip home for her sister’s wedding, Mary was blackmailed into becoming one of the Yee Naaldooshii, granting her new powers but irrevocably tainting her soul.
Skills: Archery, Athletics, Bi-Lingual (English and Navajo), Computer Skills, Dancing, Herbology and Natural Medicine, Navajo Religious and Mystic Ceremonies, Singing.
Flaws: Finds it hard to say, “no” to requests for help, mercy and forgiveness. Low alcohol tolerance.

    Aditional Info: (Optional)
Loves and has a pet coyote, Chahałheeł (a male that she has tamed from a pup).

    Name: James Keller
    Alias: Nightstalker
    Appearance:
    Image

    Gender: Male
    Age: 20
    Build: 5'10, 150 lbs
Sexual Orientation: Straight as the gays ain't

    Powers:
    • Dark Puppet: James has an animated shadow named Umbra that lives inside his backpack, who is the source of James' power, and acts as his ally in battle. Umbra can instantly dissolve into shadow indefinitely, allowing him to swim through shadow, warp through solid matter, and solidify shadows into weapons such as chains, tentacles, and even blades.

    • Shadow Manipulation: As a gift from Umbra, James can also manipulate shadows and darkness, albeit to a more limited extent. James can solidify any darkness into umbrakinetic constructs, or shadow constructs, and can also manipulate shadows, briefly turn into a shadow and even generate darkness.

    Drawbacks and Limitations:

    • Shadow Link: James is connected to Umbra by a pact the two made, binding them together to share powers. As a result, whatever happens to Umbra also happens to James, as they freely share an emotional link. When Umbra feels pain, James also hurts, and vice versa. However, this can also mean that James will die if Umbra is to perish. As well, the farther James and Umbra are separated, the more their powers weakened, and when far enough apart, both will lose all their powers aside from Umbra's shadow physiology. Finally, the two share a combined energy pool, and despite the fact that it is quite expansive, if one member of their duo fatigues enough, it will result in both of them not being able to use their powers.

    • Shadow Limits: There are many limits to James' shadow powers. While James can form constructs, the more complex or far away he creates them, the more energy he uses, and too complex or too far away of a construct can cause unconsciousness or even death.

Second, there's his shadow form. While Umbra's can shadow swim indefinitely until their stamina pool runs out, James has a thirty second timer in shadow form. He can do practically anything in those thirty seconds, but once the clock runs out, he's spit out and can't transform back without a rest period, which can vary from a minute to ten.

Finally, his shadow generation is very limited in its ability. He can generate enough darkness to put a closet in pitch-blackness, or dim a classroom, but that's his upper-limit and he will exhaust himself after that. Umbra also loses energy very quickly from shadow generation, and also prefers to use existing shadows.

    • Blinded By The Light: James must cover himself up in the presence of natural or artificial light. If his skin is exposed to harsh light, he will suffer terrible burns and can die from prolonged exposure. Umbra will also endure serious pain and weakness from light.

Equipment: His black cloak, which he wears everywhere to prevent burns. His large satchel, which also houses Umbra inside. An finally, a rapier

Personality: James can be a friendly person. He's usually friendly and amicable, and an honest and hard-working guy. He has tremendous work ethic and is very punctual and responsible, always striving for perfection and yearning to achieve it. But all that flies out the window when there's something at stake.

James is very over-competitive, and will do anything to win a perfect game. He will give his 110%, but will resort to underhanded or cheating tactics if necessary, and will do basically anything to win. Once he has achieved that, he also has a nasty habit of bragging about it. And when he loses, he's the one guy swearing like a sailor and throwing chairs.

    Nationality: English
    Hometown: Leicester

Bio: James Keller seemed like he would have an average childhood. Regular middle-class parents, regular school life, regular friends, did some athletics here and there, played an instrument, your average life. He wanted to study electrical engineering after school like his father, and seemed well-on-track to do so for the first years of life, all the way through middle school. Really, it couldn't have amounted to anything more than average.

But as he grew older, he saw the world with different eyes. He now saw the crime, the alleys, the homeless people. The news reports on villainous terrorism. It all seemed too much. James wanted to do something about it, but what could a powerless 15-year old do?

A lot, actually, in the coming weeks.

One day, walking home from a party at night, he made the poor decision to take a shortcut through an alley, and straight into a group of muggers. Despite his attempts to fight back, it was four against one, and they overpowered him. They had a gun to his head, and were fumbling for his wallet, hundreds of dollars of saved up money inside.

    That's when Umbra came.

Suddenly, James heard screams as the weight was suddenly lifted off of him, no gun poking his neck. What looked like a demon had all four muggers pinned against the wall of the alley, all choked by thick and dark tendrils. In fear, James ran, but Umbra followed him all the way home, just to explain what had happened.

Umbra was a shadow that had been animated by a local hero as a low-level knight, but Umbra had fled in the hopes of finding a true ally and co-fighter. Along his way, he had made emotional bonds with several people, to give him the energy he needed to continue. And now, he had found a human, a human who wanted to fight back against the wave of villainous people that plagued the world. And it was that day when the two made a pact to link to each other and battle the world.

After graduating high school, instead of going to study engineering, he became a low-level "hero", fighting criminals in his hometown under the watchful eye of the night, and bringing his form of justice, bringing his sphere of strained, temporary peace to the streets. People and papers began to pick up on the doings of James, reporting defeated and turned in criminals that had been demolished by an anonymous hero, known as "Nightstalker", a mantle which James quickly adorned. But the Academy were a little quicker to pick up than the papers, and James soon found himself among their ranks. For better, or worse.

Skills: Very athletic individual who plays many sports like tennis and cricket, strong work ethic and gives a lot of effort into tasks, also great at deceptiveness and lying

Flaws: Over-competitive, slightly hot-tempered, tends to be opinionated and somewhat pushy. Struggles with tasks that require more kinesthetic or tactile approaches.

Aditional Info: Will get into many fights over football teams, particularly his hometown team, Leicester City.

So, if I'm reading this right, this is an academy RP? Or not exactly? Are our heroes going to be the ones doing the training?

Also, what if I bring my artist character back?

yes, this is an academy RP (i'm expanding my horizons as an OP). The Artisan could be an instructor if you want. Teach "art" as a way of relaxation for the students, maybe try and show them alternate uses for their powers?

But my original intent was for your characters to be students

He could teach art as a way of teaching combat preparedness and sparring. Richard has a bunch of fun prints in his journal to draw from.

Argus is an international organization created by the UN to monitor and police metahumans in general but specifically designed to interact with sanctioned Hero teams. They act as the superhero police. Grey worked for A.S.E.T. (Argus Special Enforcement Team) They investigated superhero missions to make sure international laws regarding superhero activity were followed, and gather evidence to convict superheroes of breaking the law.
