Overview
Life on Gresswell is a unique experience - a place where the sun does not shine at all for a few weeks presents its own unique challenges. An island with just over 130 permanent inhabitants, the small population and the researchers who frequent this island certainly have stories that can be told.

This thread is for OOC coordination - a place where collaboration in regards to the island can occur. You can discuss anything and everything about Gresswell Island in this thread - whether that be history, IC posts or its complex relationship with the outside world. IC posts surrounding Gresswell Island will occur in The Citizens of The Western Isles thread unless a RP comes up that can justify a new IC thread for it. IC posts will generally be random in nature, with little story direction. The factbook for the territory is here.

So, there’s been a lot of ideas pitched in regards to this territory and this is the perfect place to discuss and plan some of them.

• A weather station (canon) where meteorology and climate change research can occur (it can kinda be our antarctica regarding that)
• An observatory (non-canon)
• Having the island as a location for peaceful geopolitical friction (canon) (ie intrigue between Thuzbekistan and Ostehaar under the disguise of non-militaristic scientific research)
• A polar expedition, which could possibly be a RP (non canon)
• Seed bank (kinda canon)

I would love the idea of having an observatory on Gresswell Island, or at least, seeing how Athara Magarat seems keen on the idea as well, maybe a collaboration?

That can be quite shaky though considering the tensions existing between Townside and Athara Magarat ICly. The fact that Athara Magarat could pull researchers from the University of Townside without batting an eye doesn't help either. We can still discuss this, maybe as a goodwill gesture between our two nations, but if that doesn't work out, you could always consider having two observatories on the isalnd

It's such a coincidence because I was doing some preliminary plans for the "Royal Penrith Observatory, Townside" dispatch. I'll have that up in about a year. Perhaps if I do end up setting up an observatory on Gresswell, it will be administered by the Royal Penrith Observatory.

Meanwhile, I'll wait to see if there's any other ideas from others that I might... jump on.

The gov received a huge flak from intellectuals for that. I am sure Gresswell can be one of the ways of mending ties.

We're not exactly sure what's north of us, but icebreaking vessel sounds like a good idea.

Why would a polar expedition be a non-canon RP? Or does that mean it just hasn't been canonized yet?

Thuzbekistan would love to have an observatory there, but it would have to be built in the mid-seventies.

Polar expeditions is an idea, therefore non-canon at the time and currently. It was something I was meaning to follow up Verdon (Who came up with it) about in this thread so we can start a RP about it.

Per the discussion in Discord (as that is the place where all shenanigans take place), Ainslie and I will have been jointly building a port in Greston. It will be economic in nature and meant to facilitate the growing fishing and service industries in the North Sea.

Also, given the presence of so many observatories, I think there should be a law that cuts light pollution after a certain time of night. Perhaps limiting lighting to homes and major roadways as well as tall buildings?

130 people live there. Is there really going to be that much light pollution. A law could work though. Curfew at the airport, closure of port except emergencies and those three things you were saying.
