Betsy Devos Urged to Drop Dress Codes

Postby Anarcitopianchillstate » Fri Apr 13, 2018 11:35 pm

The person behind the Chillstates (me) has tweeted to US Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos, to urge a nationwide end to sexist, demeaning, school dress codes. The teenagers of North America demand free expression. We demand that we do not have to worry about how short our shorts are, the colour of our hair, the colour of our nails and these things - that DO NOT AFFECT EDUCATION - you know what affects education far more - the suspensions and detentions as a result of violating the dress code - America is very hot in the summer and some states like Florida are hot year world - and most shorts for girls are above the archaic "fingertip rule". We also call for an end to school uniforms!!!!!! Discuss and if anyone agrees, start a petition or contact Betsy!!!! or a state governor, a school district manager or even a school principal (one school at a time)!!! Discuss below!

Disagree.

So I should be allowed to go to school wearing nothing but a pair of socks?

Because allowing people to show their shoulders is equivalent to going naked?

I agree. Trying to abolish dress codes and uniforms isn’t really feasible, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with dress codes either.

Anarcitopianchillstate, no all-caps thread titles, please; and there's no need to flag it as a discussion thread as all NSG threads are discussion threads.

I've edited your title accordingly.

A mere 100 years ago the answer to that would have been "yes, obviously".

I don't see the issue with dress codes. There's no limit to freedom of expression but that doesn't mean you can and should walk around with clothing that is unsuitable for the learning environment or obscene.

School should not be a formal environment... it should be an environment for learning how to live in the real world, including how to live when doing anything in life and in life u will meet attractive females get over it you may aswell practise tolerating and respecting women in school!!!!

School isn't a formal environment. In saying that it's also not an environment where you can just rock on up wearing anything you want. For example, no school would allow someone turning up to school in clothes that were dirty and smelled bad. No school would allow clothing that had graphic material on it or had swastikas or other offensive images and symbols on it. You wouldn't be allowed to turn up to school wearing nothing but strategically placed body glitter. Same goes for "real world" environments who also have dress codes and, contrary to apparently popular belief, for the most part are formal environments. In many instances, appropriate clothing is worn for safety reasons or if that business has a uniform, like McDonald's.

When we have actual cases of a five year old girl being sent home from school for wearing a spaghetti-strap top because it's "distracting", I'd say it's a valid response.

This is a local issue and ditsy dbag has no direct control over it. In the US our education system is heavily decentralized. It's like complaining to the president that your HOA won't let you feed squirrels. She doesn't control it. The thing to do would be to bring this argument up at the school board meetings.

Inappropriate dress, maybe. Distracting though? Eww... for whom was it distracting?
