California to Vote on Splitting in Three in November

Postby San Lumen » Fri Apr 13, 2018 4:06 pm

http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2018/0 ... er-states/

A billionaire from Silicon Valley has supposedly submitted 600,000 signatures to the Secretary of State's office for a referendum to split California into three states. It's not officially on the ballot as signatures must still be verified.
This is not the first time its been proposed nor will it the last. Tim Draper the man behind this proposed a similar referendum in 2016 but it failed to get the required signatures upon scrutiny by the Secretary of State.

I think this is a absurd idea that if it gets to the ballot is even more unlikely to pass. The populous coastal counties are unlikely to go for it and there is simply not enough votes in the interior to overcome them.

If by some miracle it did I doubt the State legislature or Congress would approve it as no state can be formed out of another without the consent of that state.

That's not even getting into potential issues with splitting the state. For example there are 10 University of California campuses. Imagine a family in Los Angeles having to pay out of state tuition to got to Berkeley. Water rights could be another sticking point. Not to mention its also a power grab to try and get more electoral votes and representatives in Congress.

Update: it is officially on the ballot. It has virtually no chance of passing. A recent poll shows 72 percent against. Only a fringe minority supports this wacky idea.

What's your take on this absurd referendum NSG?

One of them better be the state of Jefferson or its heresy.

It would seem that the biggest backer merely claims to have gathered enough signatures, but I'm naturally skeptical of this claim. If he garnered enough valid signatures, I think (and correct me if I'm wrong), that actually getting this on the ballot could still be difficult.

But, in the scenario this somehow lands on the ballot, it would probably be defeated by a large margin. As interesting as the idea sounds from a perspective of it being, well, merely interesting, the logistics of such an idea would just be crazy. Not to mention, the state and federal government would never approve of this even if it was on the ballot and miraculously passed.

I'll call it a total non-issue.

Northern California would technically be that.

I know, hence why I said that in the first place.

Dilute voting power for one and anger in some interior counties that they are outvoted by the coast. I very much doubt this would pass if it got to the ballot and even if it did Sacramento would never approve it.

Pretty much every Californian besides those that signed:
"This stupid shit again?"

I would not be the least bit surprised if it turns out a slew of those signatures fail verification. And in the extremely unlikely situation of it making it to the ballot, it's not going to pass. Just like the Texas secessionists, just like the California secessionists, and so on, this is not a thing the vast, overwhelming majority of people want. It is the fringe obsession of a microscopic fraction of the population, a few of which happen to be particularly loud about it rather than anything remotely representative of the real world. Every flavor of "divide California!" that has been proposed (and this has been a thing for decades) hasn't come anywhere close to succeeding.

Smaller states already have more power. This proposal wouldn't give any minority a voice.

I wouldn't mind an independent Jefferson/Norcal. That part has always seemed more like Oregon or Washington to me than the rest of California, so it would make sense to create a new state. However, I don't see such a thing actually happening.

I am actually kinda excited to see where the referendum will go, I hope some actual change will happen, more stars for our flag and less Californian power in the Congress

I don't know what to say anymore. As a person living in California at the moment, I think this is ridiculous. If Fresno wants to leave, I wouldn't miss them, but Fresno would be a disappointing state. Same with Jefferson. California is good as a state because people live there. If everyone just leaves, we will find ourselves with Beverly Hills as a state eventually. I doubt more than 75 people - tops - even actually signed this petition. The referendum will probably not happen and even if it does, Sacramento will kill it. It's unlikely that this ever happens.

Please not that California is not all like this. Where I am right now is pretty darn cool.

The people in charge of that state are basically doing whatever they want anyway, regardless of what A: the federal government or B: literally anyone who doesn't live in the big coastal cities wants. I would love for them to break up. Maybe that'll inspire a breakup of the Vampire Empire State next.

Also, California's very nice.

Because the state government is legitimately terrible and does everything it can to undermine the rule of law. It should be contained.

I like how state's rights trump federal rules now that a certain someone is in office, but when it was other states and someone else was in office, it was all about the federal supremacy.

At the very least, I've heard the weather and landscape is generally fairly pleasant. That much won't change regardless of how this referendum goes(if it happens).

Utah is also nice

Also, there is a huge line between "State Rights" and "Senate Bill No. 179"

How so? As i pointed out int the OP the logistics of this make no sense. For example Why should someone in San Diego have to pay exorbitant tuition to attend UC Berkeley?
