In the beginning, there was nothing.

Or rather, nothing as man understood it. The Nothing was not an absence of everything, but rather, a presence of everything that then existed. To say that there was nothing is foolishness- the Nothing composed everything that might be, that was, or that had been. Not emptiness, but presence, and a Presence that understood everything. The Presence was alone, but that did not even have a meaning. What could be greater than one when that one composes everything? Adding an infinity to an infinity is a pointless endeavor, and yet, the Presence was not content.

An emotion, contentment. Not something ascribable to nothing, an emptiness without thought or mind, and yet there it was. A metaphysical concept, a spark of cognition, which hung for an eternity of nameless time in the formless void. A hunger for something different than what was, even lacking the capacity to conceive of anything else than oblivion. This is the first mystery, the first paradox, and from it all reality stems.

For that mystery grew with the passing of time. Time, which itself did not yet exist, troubled the Nothing. Without change time was meaningless- it was only measurable by differences in the universe, but everything that was and had been already existed within the Nothing, unchanging, immutable.

And so the Nothing changed. This is the second mystery, how a something that is everything could make something else that was different from that everything. From that Nothing came Something, a part of the Everything sundered by unknowable force or will, the Something which men call the universe. The spark and the hunger grew then immeasurably, suddenly given a Something upon which to focus its attentions, a validation of its craving for existence. The Nothing gave it a name, not a name that men know, but a label, for it was no longer the Nothing. Men call it the Maker, the First Flame, the Great God. This presence looked upon the Something, which was then almost as formless and empty as the Nothing, and thence it turned its attentions.

Creation. Not the act of a potter, to turn a lump of clay into a vessel or a piece of art. Not creation as man knows it, a poor shadow and imitation of that which was the first Creation. The manifestation of ought else from the tapestry of the Something, a change in the weave, and light started in the void. The Maker first made light to separate from the dark, for its mind was new-formed then, and could ill-conceive of ought that was not antithesis to what already was. But it was enough. Enfolded in the idea of darkness, of blackness, is the question of what could not be darkness, and therein lies the concept of light.

And so the stars wheeled overhead, and the night was turned to day. For with the antithesis of emptiness, of the void, came the fullness, the world. Firm ground, and solid rock, and a counterpoint. This was the Maker's purpose, and it delighted in the seeing of the Something, and in that delight it sang. Another antithesis, to give sound to what had been an empty silent universe. In that song was not only the opposite of this silence, but as the Maker sang its song wove the fabric of what men call Earth, and beyond. Water, harmony to the melody of Fire, which was the fabric of the stars. Life, harmony to the melody of Death, which was the material of the void. Not a dissonance in the Maker's song, not discord, but complementary in their nature, two faces of the same concept given form.

Then man emerged on the face of the Earth, and looked up at the stars. This is the third mystery. A mind itself separated by unknown means from the Nothing could itself beget more minds, more concepts. The priests say that the First Flame gave of itself voluntarily, another point of antithesis, for to have all of creation with none to look upon it was opposed to its being, the counterpoint of creation being unobserved being to give it observers. Men drew breath for the first time, in their chests buried the tiniest spark of the Great God, and to them was given the Earth.

Time passed, now flowing as a river in its proper course, for change men wrought on the Earth, and as a fellow laborer the Maker walked with them. It taught them of the fields, of agriculture. It set upon the hills and dales mountains that it raised high for men to marvel at, and when they asked for implements to ease their toil it set metals in the earth that men might shape tools to their uses. It gave men the gift of life, but also the gift of death, to one day escape the river of time which rolled over their physical forms and be rejoined with the Nothing from which they were taken.

But this is not its story.

As the sons of men grew strong and wise, they multiplied upon the face of the Earth. Discord arose in the Great God's harmony, between the competing minds of men, the sons of its spirit which possessed in part their own ideas for creation, each being a part of greater whole. They could understand the act of creation dimly, as if through a clouded mirror, and each perceived his own purpose in the First Flame's creation- purposes which often brought them into conflict with their fellow man. One man went to plow a field to feed his family, another to preserve the field so he might hunt upon it, another to leave the field undisturbed so it might be a vista of beauty for generations to come. And so man quarreled, and the discord grew.

Thus, the fourth mystery, which the priests will not speak of. The Maker took another portion of its flame and gifted it to the wisest and fairest of men and women, and their power for creation grew in measure. Some it gave the gift of life, others the touch of fire, and the facets of creation were reflected in their abilities. These men their fellows came to call gods, for they were shallow reflections of the Great God, judges set to rule over creation and their fellows.

This is their story.

Welcome, friends, to Divinity! This is a RP that I've had on backburner for some time, and thus the lore is long, but do not worry- the concept is very simple. Humanity is newly arisen on a newly created Earth, and you, gentle writer, are a god. Not a God, but a god, a creature of supernatural power, but not omnipotence. Newly created to, to shepherd the course of humanity, are many other gods, of which you are but one. This is, at its core, a Dice RP, like many you may have seen elsewhere- just with a dash of supernatural power.

This will be their story. The story of early man, and the departure of the Maker from the creation that has been formed, and how humanity handles both its newfound power and the creation that has been given to it.

Intrigued? Fun concept? Feel free to drop in an app.

To explain that application in brief (or at least the points that aren't readily apparent):

All gods are creatures of an Aspect- that is, a portion of Creation, the universe, with which they are concerned. This may be anything from generalities like water, to specifics like the Enfolding Sea, to minutiae such as the little guardian-god of a lake. This Aspect is your god's major source of strength, being the portion of the Great God which it possesses power over. Power is diluted with scale; a god which has some influence over all water will be less capable of influencing a specific body of water, whereas the patron-deity of a small lake will have great influence over that specific lake, but be less capable of changing events beyond the boundaries of its influence. I will not be accepting esoteric concepts like "Time" or "Justice" for godly aspects, because they tend to be misused, and limit the options of other writers.

Every god also has an antithesis, something that is the negative of its essential being. A creature of the sun, for instance, is much weakened at night, a being of fire by water, and so on. This should be fairly general, even if the Aspect of a god is quite specific- the antithesis of a lake god, for instance, is not "that volcano on the other side of the world", but rather heat, or the sun, or the cold, and so on.

Gods (little g) can also change, be molded, accrue influence over domains that were not their own to begin with, and so on. The nature of the First Flame is that of change and creation at its heart, and so I fully expect gods to change over the course of this roleplay.

Divinity
Name:Savarian
History:
Born and named after his home town of Savarus, Savarian had a good childhood, learning as much about the ocean as could be learned in that time.

As a boy he enjoyed going down to the beach and pretending like he could control the waves, motioning wis his hands like he was pulling the waves in, then shoving hem forward like he was pushing the waves back.

Eventually he married, his father and mother picking his bride, a nice girl a couple houses down.

They eventually came to love eachother, and produced a son named Garus.

One month after his 26th nameday he took his son out on to the ocean, but do to that times rudimentary sea going technology, he could not geuss that a massive storm was coming.

The waves pushed his family overboard, and he failed to hold on to his son as his wife sunk to the bottom of the sea.

Desperation taking him, he pushed his hand out, and the water left him.

He was standing on the water.

Name: Oronar
History: Once a young man who worked the Earth to feed his family, he discovered that he could feel some energy floating and evolving around him, sometimes this energy would manifest when he would touch other people, or metal objects. With time, this energy started to flow through him, and manisfested itself in the form of Lightning, white rays that he could control, and even project from the sky.
But with this great power comes great responsabilities, he realized, and as people started to notice him, he knew that his fate would see him rise through the ranks more than anything he ever imagined, and so he swore to use his power very carefully. He renamd himself after his hometown Oronariekov, his real name to be forgotten...

Divinity
Name: Mortem

History: Born in an unknown town, to mysterious parents, he was abandoned in a cave when he was but a baby. Eventually, found my a mother wolf, he lived of its teat until he was able to go and hunt for himself, eventually he would kill the mother wolf as a show of his ascendance to adulthood. Wearing its skin as a large coat, he stayed in the cave until his 30th Birthday, although he knew it not of his age. This day, he decided he had had enough of his cave and its comforting darkness, and that night he slowly made his way out of the cave, a large sword of obsidian in his hand carved from a small space in his cave. As the wolf's skin covered him, and his obsidian blade lay at his waist, he creeped to a nearby village, which happened to be the one his Parents lived in. He killed the sentries, their blood dripping onto his chest, the scarlet contrasting against his pale white skin. Soon, nearly the entire village was dead, Mortem's violence was so great but so silent, not until morning did anyone discover them. However, as he killed his parents, they shouted "Mortem!" as they died, and this was the name he took. As blood covered nearly every inch of his body, he took his obsidian blade and threw it to the ground. However, as he went to walk away, darkness descended upon the village, all the lights went out, and a voice came booming from nowhere but everywhere at the same time. It spoke and said "YOU, VILE CREATURE, WILL BE CURSED FOREVERMORE WITH THE ASPECT OF DEATH! NEVER SHALL YOU AGE, FOR YOU SHALL SEE THAT THOSE WHO DIE WILL DIE, BY MY COMMAND!" Mortem fell unconscious, and awoke in the cave, his body turned black, chains hung from his cloak, and his wolf skin had been replaced by a simple torn hood, his eyes glowed red, and his teeth were sharp to a point.

Aspect: Death (To a lesser extent the darkness and primal fear that is associated with death)
Appearance: (Ignore the other creatures)
Patronized City: Mortes Vacui
Antithesis: Life (and to a lesser extent the light and hope associated with life)

So, Savarian is a child? A child named after his home city? In case it wasn't clear, the gods are mortals now given divine power, not creatures newly manifested. Your character will be known to others as a mere man, and now they suddenly have abilities and latitude with the divine they did not have before, as in, just before the RP started chronologically.

Again- the gods have just been created. I'm skeptical of a city being named after one of them, being that nobody really knows about them yet, but that's a fine name if the god is named after the city instead of vice-versa.

As he approached the town an unnatural dark descended upon it, the torches flickered and fought to stay alight, and the sentries abandoned their posts in fear. As he walked forward towards his parents tent, the ground beneath him seemed to have a permanent shadow that could not be penetrated by light, and his body seemed to morph in the shadows that surrounded him. Eventually he would reach their tent, and anger filled him, and darkness engulfed them all, and their souls screamed in a flurry of death and pain. The deed was done, and Mortem was born.

Yeah... that doesn't really work with the timeline of "gods just appeared", having one who has actually been around for more than a century. Also, divine power is explicitly from the Maker, not a mystical creature like a phantom. Whether such a creature exists is ambiguous, but even if they do exist, they aren't capable of turning men into gods at random.

Common men and everyday people (or not so everyday) were chosen for their affinities to the aspects the Maker sought to empower mankind with, and have now gained a portion of the Great God's power.

I see, that still works with my character then, just have to make sure he's not that old and isn't a god until he kills his parents and village.

Aspect:The Ocean
Appearance:
Patronized City:Savarus
Antithesis:Heat

Cool, cool. Happily accepted.

Is straight up magic a thing as an aspect?
This account must be deleted. The person behind it is a racist, annoying waste of life that must be shunned back to whatever rock he crawled out from.

Offhand, that sounds a touch esoteric. What would he actually influence? Allowing people to walk across long distances more easily?

Ralnis wrote:Is straight up magic a thing as an aspect?

Sure, though I would likely limit it to very specific attributes of magic. "Magic" generically isn't really anything at all, more the ability to influence other parts of the world through unnatural means.
