The year is 1880.
The world of Non Plus Ultra's biggest difference from our own is its lack of the Americas. The Atlantic and Pacific are one giant hemispheric ocean, referred to as the Great Western Ocean in English, with North and South America being two submerged continental shelves in the middle of the Ocean. Somehow or other (arguably because of the shallowness of the ocean where the Americas would have been) Earth's ocean currents and climate have been affected only minimally.
However, history in Non Plus Ultra has diverged from our own a great deal since Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492 and did not return. Nations have still risen and fallen, Europe has still engaged in a period of discovery and colonisation and the Renaissance has still blossomed into the Industrial Revolution and the Enlightenment. The Reformation still occured. Africa is still staring into the face of European Imperialism, and Asia and Oceania are also staring down European rifle barrels (although the empires of the Near East and Far East have a fighting chance against Europe). The assortment of nations and empires engaging in these events are different from in our timeline, however.
The world is a bit smaller in land area than our own, but just as eventful. Why not roleplay as a nation in this interesting alternate timeline?
I'm going to set up a region system for nation claims, in which a set amount of land claims can exist within certain regions. It generally won't interfere with much, but there will be some set guidelines.
There are several types of regions -
- White text regions that are not (heartlands) may only have four (4) nations' land claims inside of them
- White text regions that are (heartlands) may have an infinite number of nations' land claims inside of them, but only if they are of that (heartland)'s civilization. The maximum number of claims that are not of that civilization is four (4) nations' land claims.
- Black text regions are undeveloped and ripe for colonisation. A maximum of three (3) non-native nations' land claims can exist inside of them. If a fourth nation attempts to colonise during the RP, it creates a COLONIAL CRISIS in which one of the other colonisers must be expelled from the region if another coloniser is to move in, keeping the number at three.
- Post-colonial nations in black-text regions (an independent Australia or South Africa) are exempt from the above rule, but only in regions at or adjacent to their capital city, otherwise they are treated as colonisers.
- Yellow text regions may have an infinite number of colonising nations' land claims inside of them, but a maximum of three (3) native nations.
The little grey islands in the middle of the ocean (with as Mauritius, Diego Garcia and Cape Verde, among others) are part of no region and you can do what you like with them. Just don't be unreasonable.
