Carter had been no more pliable than Gonzalez. So Cao moved on to her next stop in the City by the Bay.

The Pacific Research Institute was a center of conservative research and scholarship in an otherwise liberal city.

Heading up its Center for California's Future was Ray Richardson, who had served as a senior economic advisor for the last Republican governor. The last real Republican governor, that is. The one that came after him was a RINO if she ever saw one.

"Mrs. Cao, while I am pleased that you're planning to run for office -you certainly did great things in the State Senate- I am unable to sign on to your campaign. There's no one here to replace me if I leave."

"That's unfortunate."

"However....." Richardson grinned. "I can direct you to half a dozen others who would jump at the chance to join your campaign."

Cao became progressively more and more excited with each person he mentioned, though her face didn't show it. They had all either served under Richardson or worked with another Republican governor. One had even worked in the White House. "I must say I'm impressed, Mr. Richardson. I didn't realize you knew so many old hands."

"For you, Mrs. Cao, only the best." They shook hands. "I'll be watching the campaign closely. Perhaps if you win, I might even work with your office. Good luck."

Story update, 9:58 PM

The area around the building is still roped off and we have been unable to get any official comment but TNS reporters have gotten a statement from a student who had stopped by the event before leaving, who estimated that there were "at least a few dozen" in attendance.
At the current time, it is not known if any in the building survived.

Congressman Barnum stepped up to the podium. Even though he had practiced in the bathroom mirror, his hands were still shaky. Beside him stood his wife, and a bored police officer who was busy trying to catch a fly in his hands.

Barnum licked his lips earnestly, then took a deep breath, and began to read his prepared statement.

"Dear Colleagues, Constituents, and Iowa.

Today marks a turning point in the history of our great state. The Governorship, a powerful and influential position, has been on my mind since the day I was inaugurated into the Iowa State Senate. During this time, I have earned the love and support of the 2nd District, and I hope to win the support of the whole state in my campaign for Governor of Iowa."

A cheer erupted from the crowd, as chants of "Barnum for change" echoed around the monument. Blair stood back, relived at the support he was getting. He then leaned forward again.

"It will not be an easy race. For every milestone there is a setback, for every victory there will be a loss. But I know that we will prevail, and I strongly believe that with your support, I will be able to become the governor of the Great State of Iowa."

A thunderous applause sprung forth from the gathered crowd as Barnum tried to speak over the noise

"If you have any questions, I will be doing a town hall next Tuesday night at the Convention Center."

The children had already been put to bed, but their father was still awake, packing some clothes, a laptop, and a handful of other items into a large suitcase, clicking it closed on the bed once it was full. Buttoning his last button on the fresh suit he had donned, the big man easily lifted the accessory, and made his way heavily down the stairs.

He gave Linda Sue a kiss on the forehead at the bottom before heading over to the door, stopping for just a moment, contemplating, then plucking a black hat off of the peg that it was hanging on, donning it as he left the house. He had not typically worn one since he was a much younger man, but for whatever reason, he felt like the round-brimmed piece of clothing was a good choice.

He had a fairly short drive to the train station, and then boarding one going north, to New Hampshire. A ride of some length in the night-but it would be worth it.

Like the Pacific Research Institute, the Independent Institute was an island of conservatism.

Cao had found yet another notable figure: Madison Sharps. Mrs. Sharps considered herself a civil rights activist, fighting against reverse discrimination affecting Asian Americans and whites in the college admissions process and employment practices.

She had assisted in the writing of Proposition 209, which had struck down the use of affirmative action for government entities and programs. In recent years, she had become a proponent of the practice of blind hiring as a way to increase diversity without using what she regarded as de facto quota measures.

Her "in" was a chance to do civil rights work for the state government, and it had the desired effect. Sharps immediately signed on.

With that, Cao had recruited a diverse field of experts to serve as policy advisors, at least to start out. Now she could move on to her next project.

Barnum hurriedly pulled a rolling bag off his closet shelf and stuffed a number of essentials into his bag. He then grabbed his phone, wallet, and a charger from the wall, hurrying outside to his dark gray Subaru Outback. He fired off a quick text to his wife, explaining the twitter feud, and gunned his car down the quiet street to the Cedar Rapids Airport.

The train journey was one filled with memories...

As the train passed through Martinez, Sydney remembered the accident at the Golden Eagle Refinery. She could see the smoke all the way from their home in Concord. Greg rushed over as soon as it was safe, and over the following weeks she met the Contra Costa County District Attorney, an investigator from the California Environmental Protection Agency, and an official from the EPA office in San Francisco. A revolving door of visitors served as the impetus for a congressional investigation of this and other accidents, and these same visitors ended up testifying on Capitol Hill.

After a few hours, she was finally in Los Angeles.

As soon as she left the station, she got out her phone and called Mayor Cox.

There was no response, so she left a message on voicemail.
"Hello, this is Sydney Cao, who wished to have a meeting with you. I've reserved us a table at Spago. It's a real nice place in Beverly Hills, I think you'll like it. See you there."

Taylor Cox's alarm clock rang, as he woke up in bed next to his sleeping wife. Awake, he sat himself up on his bed, before getting on his pajamas. Walking downstairs, without waking up the whole house, Cox went downstairs to make himself some of toast and cereal. Eating his breakfast in front of the TV, he watched some news in low volume.

"Our news story from yesterday is still in breaking news, as New Hampshire authorities have yet to comment on the actual causality count of the explosion. Social media is criticizing radical Islam, but is not criticizing Islam religion as a whole. There is still no talk of any individual who is identified to be part of Atheist Republic. This news story will keep pending when a new development is made. In other news, many college goers in the Los Angeles area have been complaining over the violence found in sporting events, such as wrestling." Cox pressed the power button on the TV and realized that there was a voicemail on his answering machine.

"Hello, this is Sydney Cao, who wished to have a meeting with you. I've reserved us a table at Spago. It's a real nice place in Beverly Hills, I think you'll like it. See you there.", the answering machine let out a message, which a part of Cox moaned in annoyance. He forgotten about Sydney. Some more sleep would soothe him, but he needed to have that meeting, if it was of any importance. Going back upstairs, Cox got himself a suit to wear, while making sure not to wake up Velma. Exiting the house, Cox got into his car, before noticing Mr. Turner was staring at him through the front window of his house. Slightly unnerved, Cox drove from the suburbs to Bevelry Hills to meet Cao.

Sydney Cao waited patiently for the Mayor to arrive. In her purse, she had her trusty notebook. In her briefcase, she had the rough outline of a policical platform, and a binder with maps, reports, and other information.

If she was to have any chance at getting elected, she would need to coordinate her campaign with that of Cox's. But first, she had to lay out how exactly she could help him.

An elderly Vietnamese woman in a grey pantsuit looked up from her notebook and noticed the Mayor's arrival. She walked over and greeted him. "Hello, Mr. Mayor. I'm glad you could make it. Come, sit down." She motioned to a table just inside the restaurant.

"So... getting down to business. I understand you're running for Governor. I have three questions I must ask before I share what I have prepared. What's your plan to win? Will you run as a conservative, a moderate, or a libertarian? And most importantly... what would your agenda be?"
