The Last of Us: The Splinter (Survival-Horror) - OOC/CLOSED

The Last of Us: The Splinter, is a survival-horror roleplay set in the world of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. It takes place in the aftermath of a raid on a Firefly outpost (20 years after the outbreak of Cordyceps Brain Infection on September 26th, 2013) which resulted in the capture of nine Fireflies by the Juliett Squad. This team of soldiers begin to transport those captured back to the Atlanta QZ in their Boeing CH-47 Chinook; the only one the military currently has left. The intel from those captured could be enough to end the war once and for all, a particularly kind stroke of luck that chance had given the soldiers that day. However, chance is often unkind, cruel even. And as for luck? Well… luck always runs out.

Information

Military
The "protectors" of the Quarantine Zones (QZ), the military, along with Federal Disaster Response Agency (FEDRA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC), are the last remnants of the United States Government. The Military works aggressively with FEDRA, eliminating all infected individuals and crushing any act of rebellion they deem worthy. While many soldiers are The Military has been known to crush the sparks of rebellion, but are still at war with the terrorist-activist group known as the Fireflies. While most of the armed forces remain in the Quarantine Zones, a few of them have been employed as scouts, such as Juliett Squad. Residing typically with their battalion (1st Light Raider Regiment AKA “The Commandants”) in the Atlanta, Georgia QZ, Juliett Squad has also been tasked with reconnaissance on the “Fireflies.” Juliett Squad has been given the best equipment, the best training (close to the training a soldier in the Armed Forces pre-outbreak would receive), and the best intel. After discovering a Firefly hideout or outpost, they breach and clear, killing or capturing every member in the building.

Fireflies
The Fireflies are a revolutionary militia group. They revolt against military oppression in numerous Quarantine Zones in the hopes of eventually restoring the US government, albeit, they are currently losing the war against the tyrants of FEDRA. Along this, the Fireflies are one of the few organized groups still searching for a vaccine for the cordyceps brain infection (CBI) and will do whatever it takes to accomplish it. The militia group is spread throughout the country, but their most recent main base is located at St. Mary's Hospital in Salt Lake City. Alongside the Fireflies, normal civilians from Quarantine Zones also may rise up due to food shortages and Firefly agitation. When comparing the Fireflies to these unaffiliated rebels, the latter will typically possess greater numbers and are more brutal, but also less organized and more desperate.
Cordyceps Brain Infection

A species of fungus that once turned insects into mind controlled zombies, began affecting humans as well. The fungus is transmitted via direct blood contact and spores in the air. When an infected is close to death, they find a dark, moist corner to lay down and die in. Even though the host has died, Cordyceps continues on. It continues to grow in the host, spreading to the walls and releasing spores. Infected are susceptible to fire due to the fungus growing in them, but can be killed just about any way you can think.

Stage 1: Runners
Runners are the first and weakest stage of the Infected who have just recently entered their transformation. People who have been infected will enter this stage within 1-2 days with increased irritability and hostility towards others being a key symptom. Since the eyes are first targeted by the fungus, Runners have poor eyesight, but maintain some human characteristics. For example, their moans are still human, just like their overall appearance. A way to tell them apart from normal survivors is their glowing orange eyes. They also stay in a hunched position when motionless or when moving around passively, unlike normal survivors. Their body language is sluggish while they are passive, suggesting they are resisting the fungus's influence, albeit usually in vain. Sometimes they do not attack at all, even when non-infected individuals are right in front of them. These non-aggressive Runners will only attack if attacked first or when an object is thrown at or near them, thus losing control. They will also become aggressive if a non-infected individual is extremely close in front of them. Much like sneezing, the urge to attack after such interactions happens involuntarily and unwillingly by the host. Runners are confirmed to be able to attack in packs, flailing their arms in attempts to trample the survivor.

Stage 2: Stalkers
“Stalkers” have the vision and speed of Runners, with the ferocity of Clickers. They make very Stalkers have the vision and speed of Runners, with the ferocity of Clickers. The most notable physical traits that define the Stalkers are the distinct croaking noises they make, the beginning of fungal growths on the head and face with only one eye left, the development of pseudo-echolocation, and their discretion upon spotting a victim at distance. They will strafe and take cover, eventually closing in on the victim, hence the name "Stalker". Up close, Stalkers are very aggressive and will charge directly at the victim. Stage 2 may take place anywhere between a week to a month after the start of the infection (Stage 1) and last up to a few years (Stage 3).

Stage 3: Clickers
Clickers are the third and most iconic stage of the Infected and take up to 2-4 years to reach this stage of infection. They have had prolonged exposure to the fungus, and now possess strength that significantly surpasses the average human. This makes them deadlier, but at the price of being completely blind due to fungal infection taking over their face. However, Clickers are able to maneuver through areas by utilizing echolocation, which produces noticeable clicking/screeching noises to locate sources of sound. Like Runners, Clickers can sometimes be found in a passive state.Clickers appear less human than Runners and Stalkers, with faces that are completely skewed and scarred by fungus developed from their infected brains. The fungal plates have apparently adapted to keep the host/pathogen alive and able to spread, as a direct shot to the face with a powerful weapon such as a revolver will more often than not just break off a chunk of the mold, leaving the Clicker's brain unharmed but exposing the victim's face and rendering them able to see once again (until the fungus regrows). Clickers are dangerous and much more aggressive than Runners, and like Stalkers; they no longer resist the fungus because their humanity has been completely eliminated. Clickers also possess what seems like very high intelligence, never leaving an area when they have heard prey run by them, and will constantly check every available nook and cranny to locate the source of the sound with little regard to give up on the task at hand. When provoked, a Clicker will immediately enter into a "berserk mode," aggressively flailing its arms and 'roaring'. At this point, if a survivor has been "spotted" by a Clicker, the Clicker will attack head-on and will not flinch when shot, unless the player is using high-powered rounds.

Stage 4: Bloaters
Bloaters are the fourth, final, rarest, and most dangerous stage of infection as they take the longest to develop, taking roughly a decade to reach this stage. They are covered in thick fungus that effectively acts as armor. Due to this protective covering, they can withstand multiple hits from weapons such as the Shotgun and Hunting Rifle, and even hatchets and machetes making them extremely tough to eliminate. Bloaters are extremely aggressive, but are rather slow-moving causing them to be more predictable than other infected. Like Clickers, Bloaters 'see' using echolocation to locate and trap a survivor. Because the fungus has completely deformed their face and blinded them, their echolocation is a lot less refined than the Clickers. If a Bloater grabs a survivor, it will violently rip their jaw apart through brute strength, killing them instantly. There is no way for a survivor to defend themselves if grabbed - the result is carnage. Bloaters will throw sacks of Mycotoxin, which explodes on impact, spraying the target with the toxin. The Mycotoxin is acidic and can hurt survivors, so it is recommended to avoid these deadly clouds.
Rules

1. My word is law, as is my Co-OP’s.

2. I don’t tolerate infighting in the OOC. While disagreements are bound to happen, do not make things personal.

3. Adding onto this, separate the OOC from the IC. Just because your characters are enemies, doesn’t mean you are out of character.

4. Players may only have one character.

5. One-liners are not allowed. You are expected to put effort into your posts.

6. I expect you to know at least a little bit about the world of The Last of Us. I’ve taken the liberty of explaining the most important things, but if you’d prefer a wider range of knowledge than either play the game or check out the Wiki.

7. Godmodding, powergaming, and metagaming are strictly disallowed.

8. As this is a survival-horror RP, characters may die. The world of The Last of Us is cold, unforgiving, and merciless. Do not expect it to cater to you.

9. On a similar note, there will be gore, blood, and vulgar language in this RP. However, I still ask you to follow along with site rules. That means keep your steamy sex scenes and your sadistic torture porn on a different website; not this one.

Gear and Information

Juliett Squad is equipped with the best equipment that the Atlanta QZ could hope to offer. Each soldier in the squad is given the typical gear that members of the military are given in this post-outbreak world. This includes the M16A4 rifle, the Beretta M9A1 handgun, a M40 gas mask, and the FEDRA handheld Fungoid Scanner, which detects infection in individuals. Not only that, but Juliett Squad is also equipped with MICH Helmets, green QRF issue plate carriers, and green QRF issue uniforms. While the fatigues are not camo, the green does provide a minimal amount of cover while hiding in the woods.

Team Leader - The Team Leader is equipped with the aforementioned gear, as well as a map. Team Leaders are picked not only because they are corporals, but also because they show great leadership skills in the face of battle.

Breacher - The Breacher is similar to all other soldiers, except for their primary weapon. The Breacher is equipped with a M500 shotgun, and as their name suggests, are the first ones in upon breaching a hostile building.

Radioman - Radiomen are equipped with, as you may have guessed, the team’s radio. As this is a technical job, they are required to know at least a bit about the mechanics of the radio. They carry spare parts for their radio as well, in case it is damaged in the field.

Rifleman - The Rifleman is the most common role on the squad. They serve as support and the forefront of battle during long range firefights.

Designated Marksman - The Designated Marksman acts as a scout for the team. They carry the M39 Enhanced Marksman Rifle, and as such take hostiles out from afar.

Automatic Rifleman - The Automatic Rifleman provides overwatch and suppressive fire. They carry the Colt Automatic Rifle, and as such they must be relatively strong.

Not sure if you're taking reservations or not, but if so, count me down as interested in a Designated Marksman role.

Name:Scott Irons
Age:30
Sex:Male
Faction:FREDRA
Rank (if FEDRA): Corporal
Desired Roles (only if FEDRA, pick 3)
Team Leader for Fire Team 1

Appearance:
Image

Height: 6'2 ft
Weight: 190 Lbs
Personal Belongings:
  • Photo of his young self and his family before the outbreak
  • Taurus 356 short barreled revolver
  • Hunting knife
  • Game of cards
Personality:Reserved and bitter, he tends to keep his life before the apocalypse as tight lipped as possible, mostly because he barely remembers it. Around the squad he works as best as he can, always being an efficient soldiers and leader, but when it comes to the past, he prefers that to just be dead.
Bio (three good paragraphs at least):
Born in the old world, witnessing parts of it, Scott barely even remembers those days of tranquility. All now heavily shadowed by the years of military preparatory school, food scarcity, his dad dying, and overall just horrific years of harsh life in the Quarantine Zone up to his joining of the Military. Scott's first years of military life was uneventful, with the usual checkpoint assignment, perimeter patrols, and sometimes going outside the walls. He never thought he would ever have to actually fire his gun on a person until he finally had to spray fully automatic fire on people trying to loot the ration distribution buildings. Things only escalated from there.

Despite it all, Scott still had his mother and his sister to look after, he thought that they where relatively safe inside the zone. Yes there was hardships, but at the very least things were okay inside the Zone. With the sudden arrival of the Fireflies that drastically changed. Scott's routine was very boring and basic once things calmed down in the Zone, guarding checkpoints, perimeter walls, and at times patrolling out of the zone. Eventually the Fireflies, whom he at first thought of as simple ragged trouble makers attacked the checkpoint he was stationed at. Many died in the firefight and Scott saw these sporadic attacks only increase as time went on. It came to the point, Gracie, Scott's sister died from a Firefly bullet in the middle of a crossfire between the military and the militia group, which seemed not to care how many deaths they left behind. Scott had his sister in his arms when she died, all while someone tagged the firefly logo in front of him. He hated the militia group since then. All that "Look for the light" bullshit only made Scott's hatred intensify. He had no problem with beating anyone that even remotely tried to justify or supported the Fireflies actions.

With time his squad started to begin training further beyond to the standards of the pre-outbreak, given pre-outbreak equipment, and was promoted to corporal after years of private first class and receiving the role of team leader of Fireteam 3 of the Juliett Squad. Through the years he's been in the military and in this unit, fighting infected and the Fireflies as well he hopes that someday things can get better once they are both gone, and he truly believes the military can do that, not some bullshit militia group that relies on hopes and dreams. He holds no sympathy for the fireflies and cares not about them other than them being dead. Through his time he has seen much death and destruction done by their hands, in his eyes they are a burden that only harms more than help as they claim. Now a team leader, bitter, and with nothing but determination for the Fireflies death he wants nothing more than finish this fight once and for all.

Strengths:
  • Leadership skills and determination
  • Physical strength
  • Good instincts
Weaknesses:
  • Aging and bitter
  • Resorts to violence too much, especially on captured Fireflies.
  • Paranoid about anyone being a Firefly sympathizer or spy
Likes:
  • Poker
  • Coffee
  • Chocolate
Dislikes (don’t say “infected.” I know your character doesn't like infected):
  • The Fireflies
  • Talking about the past
  • Thick headed people
Worst Fears:The quarantine zones that remains falling to the firefly's, or worse, infected.
Known Relationships:
  • His mother
Miscellaneous (anything else you’d like to add):He likes to have a smoke every once in a while.

Ay, thanks for apping, but I have a few problems with it. First off, I feel the bio could be a bit more specific. For example, specific times and specific locations would help a lot in the app. Second off, it shouldn't take him months to make it to a Quarantine Zone. In the first two weeks you would be placed into the closest Quarantine Zone. For his hometown as well, I once again need more specifics about it before I say anything there.

On to the second paragraph, it unfortunately breaks the lore. For example, why would he be building walls for the Quarantine Zone? The walls for the QZs are pre-built, and they won't be building new QZs after the initial ones are established. Also, he wouldn't be building military checkpoints either, because they're just sandbags and humvees. Also, why would his sister be at said construction site? Another thing that screws with the lore a bit is that it is very unlikely that he'd be a corporal at 38, especially for a specialized squad like this. Also, it's unlikely that he'd be able to just walk up and join the military in this society. All of the current military is the pre-outbreak military as well as pre-outbreak police forces. It also includes those who have been trained since childhood in the Military Preparatory Schools. His personality also leaves a bit to be desired.

As of now, denied.
I don't know what I'm s'posed to do.

Personality: A soft-spoken man, Stephen rarely raises his voice or swears, but don't mistake him for a gentle giant. His demeanor does not max his actions sometimes, and he has been known to strangle, beat, or even outright kill prisoners who got a little too cocky and self-absorbed. Despite this, many have described Stephen as "amicable", "likeable", and "kind", owing to his polite mannerisms and calm speech pattern.

Bio: Born in Mobile, Alabama, seven years before the Outbreak, Stephen was a bright, vibrant, and kind young boy growing up, and even through his first years surviving in the Outbreak, he mostly kept his sunny nature, as his family fled from failed QZ to failed QZ. However his sunny demeanor quickly soured once he began losing family members, one by one, to either infected, bandits, hunters, or disease, until it was only him, his father, and his friend Simon left wandering along the roads, before they finally reached the Atlanta QZ, one of the last stable strongholds in the old southwest, roughly three years after the Outbreak.

Stephen grew up in the post-apocalyptic school system, a definitively more brutal, practical schooling than that before the Outbreak, primarily focusing on basic survival skills, quickest ways to subdue and kill a target, and indoctrinating the young to be loyal to the military and FEDRA. Stephen quickly began to outgrow his peers, pushing six foot by seventh grade and clocking in at roughly one hundred ninety pounds by his freshman year. By the time he had graduated school, Stephen was a hulking 6'3", 206 lb monstrosity, and was as fast as a slug.

Stephen was still a generally nice kid during his post-Outbreak upbringing, but the loss of his childhood friend Simon to cholera and his father's distance and descent into drinking isolated Stephen, shattering what was left of his innocence and naivete by the time he had graduated school. He quickly joined the Army to save himself being relegated to menial labor, and was attached to the Civil Defence Battalion, in charge of maintaining order within the QZ proper as a form of martial police force. Though becoming well-versed in the use of the Beretta M9, standard issue in the CDB, Stephen's true mistress was the Mossberg 500, and he especially loved the rare occasions he could skeet shoot with it, when his CO approved his ammo ration.

Stephen remained within the CDB for several years, even meeting a woman he would later marry, a civilian mechanic named Karen who worked on the Army's Humvees, and they had a son, Lucas, not long after. However Stephen was transferred out of the CDB and into Juliett Squad when their last breacher was killed by a Firefly raiding party, and Stephen was recommended based on his proficiency and familiarity with the shotgun.

Stephen had been operating with Juliett Squad roughly three months when an accident with a grenade left him partially deaf in both ears, severely hampering his effectiveness on the battlefield, but he has since learned to respond to certain hand gestures to understand the message being conveyed, even if he can't understand it particularly well. On the other hand, this leaves him particularly susceptible to being ambused or surprised from behind, and as such he relies on his team to always be around to watch his back.

    • Field Jacket, Tartan
    • Sneakers
Personality:
Mischievous, Amy is rather hedonistic and lives in-the-moment. Outgoing but is ruthlessly blunt and bitterly sarcastic. Paranoid. Lies more than necessary. Takes pleasure in hurting others, especially those "deserving" of punishment, and could be considered a closet sadist with moral boundaries. Stubborn and obsessive. Doesn't trust easily, and absolutely hates the military (or anyone associated with FEDRA). Disrespectful, irritatingly so, but is loyal to her friends, and has dedicated herself entirely to the cause. Afraid to rely on others.
Biograhy:
Born approximately four years after the initial pandemic, Amy Tallow was the oldest daughter of a small family living within the confines of the Charlotte QZ. Life was difficult, her mother and father struggling to provide for the family, and because of their long hours spent away from home, Amy and her younger sister, Natalie, were often left alone and usually found themselves in some sort of mischief. Nothing serious, but enough to give their elders a headache. The two girls were inseparable. Natalie and her mother would be disposed of by FEDRA after displaying symptoms of infection. Soon thereafter Amy's father would join the Fireflies, he and his daughter fleeing the QZ after a successful raid against a FEDRA convoy.

In the coming years, the Fireflies active in North Carolina would prove troublesome to the military with Richard Tallow rising to prominence within the revolutionary militia. Amy, too, would share in her father's hatred of the military, and although never taking direct action she would assist whenever possible. Despite his outward motivations having been warped by a desire to seek revenge in the death of his wife and daughter, Richard Tallow would nonetheless prove himself a valuable asset to the Fireflies, and in time would find himself a priority target for FEDRA. He would eventually move southwest into Tennessee to reestablish the Fireflies in the vicinity of the Atlanta QZ; Amy would join him.

Now a teenager, Amy has assisted more-and-more in operations ranging from simple reconnaissance to spying on FEDRA checkpoints, patrols, and buildings to providing intel on sudden military movements. The Fireflies in Tennessee/Georgia have since grown in size, finding success against FEDRA on several occasions, both within and outside the QZ, and have proven difficult to counter effectively. However, some problems have come to light, notably the support for violence if only for the sake thereof. Amy is a vocal supporter of violence as a means to an end. Because of this, and because of her father's involvement in expanding the group, she rarely finds herself participating in major undertakings that require more finesse. As an unintended consequence she rarely sees her father who's often too busy. For the past few months, Amy has been living at a Firefly outpost in southern Tennessee, and recently was caught during a surprise FEDRA raid before much of a defense could be mounted. The daughter of a wanted man, she has since been taken captive.
Strengths:
    + Liar
    + Perceptive
    + Will Eat Anything
Weaknesses:
    - Clumsy
    - Limited Education
    - No Formal Training
    - Physically Weak
Likes:
    • Books
    • Cute Things
    • Violence
Dislikes:
    • Boredom
    • FEDRA
    • Sweets
Worst Fears: Having nothing to live for.

Neato. Accepted. Figured I'd go ahead and close off reservations for now as well, as we surprisingly got a lot more players than I thought we would. Also, roster's been updated.
I don't know what I'm s'posed to do.
