Football in Gergary

Football is one of the most played sports in Gergary, along with Ice Hockey. The Gergarian Football Federation (Gergischer Fussballverband (GFV), Gergely Labdarúgó Szoevetség (GLS)) is the highest footballing body in the nation, that regulates the national league as well as sending national teams to different competitions, from senior level to the youth level.

The GFV/GLS established a national football league for Gergary recently, with the first season being held later this year. The organization invited amateur teams playing locally for years to be the charter members of the league. The established Gergarian Football National Championship (also known as Gergischer Fussball Bundesliga and Gergely Nemzeti Bajnokság locally) will feature ten teams, and thirty-six games. The top two of the league qualifies for Esportivan competitions, and they are in the process of applying for a UICA license in the future.

Team Info: One of the most known tennis clubs in Gergary, die Tennisleute ventured into football a decade ago, participating in local tournaments in northern Gergary. Having a backing from one of the biggest gas companies in the country, Gazgergaia, whose logo also appear in their kits since their inception, the team look to establish dominance in the national football landscape. Since the club is backed by millionaires, traditional football club fans around Gergary reserve and channel all their hatred to this club, calling them Gas Money FC (Gasgeld-Fussballverein/Gázpénzes Labdarúgó Klub).

Team Info: Originally founded by a cooperative of farmers, the team grew to a sports club with departments in Football, Volleyball, and Ice Hockey. The only sports club having a basketball club, die Vogelscheuchen is one of the best football clubs in eastern Gergary. Unlike VfR Steinigestrasse, fans admire the organization and running of the club, one of those who organize family day activities at least once a month.

1792 Season

Its a dawn of a new day in the isle of the Federal Republic of Gergary for the first season of the National Football Championship. Ten teams across the country competed for the top honors this season. The top two of the league will qualify for the Campionato Esportivano di Campeones.

The Germanic clubs take the top 3 after the first round of matches, with only goal difference separating the three clubs from Steinigestrasse, Wiesenblume, and Milchmaenner. The team from Balogs and capital club Egyetertes are not far behind, two points from the lead. Despite having a negative goal difference, Lelkiseg just stand three points away from the leaders. The other capital club, a club of football enthusiasts, are in dead last, having only one win to their name.

A strong second round from Egyetertes, having won eight matches and losing one (to Matrose Wiesenblume, a narrow 2-1 defeat on Matchday 14), and including an away win over erstwhile leader Steinigestrasse gave them the lead by the winter break. The club from the north though have a better goal difference, and that can be crucial by the end of the season. Matrose and Balogs are not very far behind, with the latter just four points behind the Tennis People. Bauern failed to keep pace to the leaders, allowing Lelkiseg to overtake them in the standings.

1802 Season

After a brief time skip, Gergarian football resumed, with all the clubs starting from scratch. With Solymok Tyres providing sponsorship of the league for the next five seasons, the financial future of the league is secured. All the teams are fielding young and hungry players, some of them will be capped in Under-18 and Under-21 levels, and a combined team is planned for the upcoming Campionato Esportiva and future tournaments.

The season end's date caused the association to miss the IFCF entry, but has negotiated with the CEdC competition organizers at Damukuni to let their clubs enter Esportivan competition.

VfR Steinigestrasse leads the table at the first quarter of the season, leading the last Champions, Balogsi ETO by four points, and seven ahead of Wiesenblume. Their healthy goal difference of +20 will look like a defining point in possibly taking the championship.

Matrose and Egyetertes are chasing the second CEdC spot but are four and five points behind respectively. AFRT meanwhile failed to score any points, and have leaked goals left and right, 12 points behind Evolucio who also seems rooted at second bottom.

Die Tennisleute remain unbeaten with one set of fixtures remaining, now 12 points ahead of the rest of the pack. Balogs remain the prime candidate for the second CEdC spot with four points separating them from the two chasing clubs from Borbely and Wiesenblume. At the other end of the table, 12 become 22 as AFRT still are looking for the first points since Matchday 6.

Final Table
VfR Steinigestrasse win their first national championship, with three matchdays to spare. Matrose was able to take the battle for the last CEdC spot to the final matchday, but with Balogsi ETO facing bottom team AFRT, the result was an obvious win, despite the capital club's ability to end their losing skid. Balogs managed to hang on for the second CEdC spot.

Regular Season
Teams are divided per heritage - A Deutsch Division, and a Magyar Division. Each team will play their opponents within their division six times (30 games) and the teams in the other division twice (12 games), with total of 42 games. Next season, it will be reduced to 32 games, cutting the intradivision games to 4 times per opponent.
The top two teams per division will automatically get a spot in the HCL. Top three teams per division qualify for the Virag Cup playoffs.

The Virag Cup
The bottom two of the three teams per division will face off in the division semifinals, in which the winner faces their respective Division Regular Season winner in the division final. The winners of the Division Final will face each other in the Virag Cup Final.
In the lower rounds which is a best of three, team with higher points gets home-ice advantage. The Virag Cup Final, a best of five, will have the team with higher points have home-ice advantage, where they will play Games 1 and 2, and 5 if needed at home.

Virag Cup winners will get the first HCL seed for Gergary, followed by the Regular season champions (higher points get the higher seed), with the remaining spot going to the team from the champions' opposite division with the highest points. (i.e. if a team from Deutsch wins the Virag Cup, then a team from Magyar gets the last spot.)

In case the Regular season champions spot gets vacated due to winning the Virag Cup, the division runners up in the regular season gets the spot in lieu of the winners, and the lower seed of the two regular season champions.

1807 Season

Regular Season
Teams are divided per heritage - A Deutsch Division, and a Magyar Division. Each team will play their opponents within their division six times (30 games) and the teams in the other division twice (12 games), with total of 42 games. Next season, it will be reduced to 32 games, cutting the intradivision games to 4 times per opponent.
The top two teams per division will automatically get a spot in the HCL. Top three teams per division qualify for the Virag Cup playoffs.

1807 Season

After several years of disorganization of the GNFC from 1802, the competition returns with the sponsorship from Solymok intact, and two clubs joining the existing ten clubs, Pasi TE and Esportive Oeldepot. As a result of the addition of the two teams, the four rounds of round robin were abolished resulting to a more relaxed fixture list, and each team only facing each other twice, for a total of 22 matches per team. The winners of the GNFC will qualify for the IFCF competition with the next three clubs entering the Challengers' Cup, with the runners-up also earning a ticket to the CEdC along with the champions.

League Results

After Matchday 5
The last winners of the GNFC, VFR Steinigestrasse, would struggle at the start of the season, losing to the likes of Esportive Oeldepot, and surprisingly Ingbert-Borbely AFRT of all teams in front of their fans. The shock result at the fifth matchday cost the job of their current manager, Arpad Balla who brought them to success five years prior. It was the clubs from Wiesenblume and Pas to grab the lead in the first quarter of the season, winning four matches, and losing one. Esportive also made a good start, placing fifth and scoring seven points which included the aforementioned win over the defensing champions.

Despite AFRT's win over Steinigestrasse, they remained rooted at the bottom of the table no thanks to their poor start of the season having lost all of their first four games prior to the shock result. Evolucio Szekely and Steinigestrasse join them in the bottom three.

By Halfway Point
Despite being third in the league standings after five games, Balogs remained unbeaten in eleven matches, winning seven and drawing four of them, to maintain a four point lead atop of the GNFC by the halfway point of the season. Pas and Bauern were level on points, but the better goal difference on the new team gave them second position at the moment, with Matrose dropping down to fourth due to poor form which had them losing half of the next six matches. Steinigestrasse meanwhile had a good string of matches, only losing once in six matches, which enabled them to climb back up to 5th place, but the initial damage may have already been done as they trail Balogs by 10, and Pas by 6.

AFRT meanwhile remained rooted at the bottom of the table, winning only once against Lelkiseg, and losing their other five matches. Evolucio, despite not being able to win a single match since the last check, kept their slender one point lead over the Fandom. Esportive kept being in the top half of the table thanks to just losing once in six despite having four draws in the same period.

After Matchday 17
Matrose reclaimed top spot at the end of Matchday 17, after a poor form of four defeats against two wins put Balogs two points behind the Wiesenblume club, and were now level on points with Pas, with Szilagy, Bauern, and Steinigestrasse just behind the three, with seven points separating the top six teams. Esportive failed to add a win to their name during the slump and only added a point to their totals, dropping them to 10th and seven points behind Blauwelle, the club directly above them. AFRT meanwhile put two wins to their name as they leapfrog Evolucio to get out of the bottom place for the first time in Gergarian football history, although the club from Szekely are just one pont behind them.

Final Table
It was an exciting final day for the GNFC, as three teams mathematically can win the title on the final day, and two clubs fighting for the last IFCF spot.

Balogs would go to Milchmaenner to visit Bauern, and Szilagy visiting the capital to face Egyetertes. The result that would change the course of the season is the match between Pas and Steinigestrasse, with the latter needing to win due to the fact that the fifth placed team, Matrose, will host AFRT in Wiesenblume, and a positive result would be pretty guaranteed there.

However, Dominik Steuben, new manager of Steinigestrasse, eventually would not have to worry about Matrose as they were held to a 1-1 draw by AFRT of all teams. They scored the winning goal in the 87th minute against Pas, eventually costing the latter their chance to overtake Balogs in the standings. Szilagy meanwhile lost to Egyetertes by a goal, which put them fourth at the end of the day as Steinigestrasse would overtake them to third in the final table.

Balogs managed to not rely on results elsewhere, a single goal by Erik Bartos against Bauern was enough for them to clinch the title as well as a spot in the Champions League qualifiers and Esportiva's CEdC. Pas would eventually take second as Szilagy failed to overtake them and even lost third to the former champions.

The Virag Cup
The two lower ranked of the three teams per division will face off in the division semifinals, in which the winner faces their respective Division Regular Season winner in the division final. The winners of the Division Final will face each other in the Virag Cup Final.
In the lower rounds which is a best of three, team with higher points gets home-ice advantage. The Virag Cup Final, a best of five, will have the team with higher points have home-ice advantage, where they will play Games 1 and 2, and 5 if needed at home.

Virag Cup winners will get the first HCL seed for Gergary, followed by the Regular season champions (higher points get the higher seed), with the remaining spot going to the team from the champions' opposite division with the highest points. (i.e. if a team from Deutsch wins the Virag Cup, then a team from Magyar gets the last spot.)

In case the Regular season champions spot gets vacated due to winning the Virag Cup, the division runners up in the regular season gets the spot in lieu of the winners, and the lower seed of the two regular season champions.

Due to the overlords at HCL not accepting the league representatives for HCL 20, the league has decided to send the champions and the team with the best regular season record as the GGY #2 and GGY #4 respectively in HCL 21. Thus EC Gruene Fluegel Blauwelle and JK Borbelyi Fovarosok secure their slots as GGY #2 and GGY #4 for HCL 21. If these teams somehow win the Virag Cup this season or get the best regular season record, in case of the latter, JK Pasi Darazsak (as the 1809 Virag Cup runners up) and EC Eisbaeren Ingbert (next best records from the three), are the standby teams for these two slots respectively.

The winners of the Virag Cup will slot into GGY #1, and the team with the best regular season record in the other conference will slot into GGY #3, to maintain balance between the Deutsches and the Magyars.
