Your nation and languages

Postby Adrien Agreste » Sun Feb 18, 2018 3:40 am

Hello again. This time I'm interested in hearing about the languages of your nation. Here are my questions. I learnt how to make bold texts!

What is the official langauge of your nation?

-We don't have an official language. Everyone speaks whatever they want

Do your people speak multiple languages?

-Yes, French and English

Is there an indigenous language?

-Nope, our country was empty land before

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?

-cuillère, its very difficult to pronounce!

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?

-English is hard to learn I think. My teacher said there are no rules for grammar so everything is different.

What is the official language of your nation?
The official languages are English and French.

Do you're people speak multiple languages?
They speak both English and French equally, though a minority speak Spanish.

Not really, English and French have been in the kingdom for hundreds of years.

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?
From English: sesquipedalianists, paraskavedekatriophobia, or gneiss
From French: (OOC: I don't actually speak the language so I've no idea.)

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language
They're both quite hard to learn, English especially due to its complex grammar rules.
Hello! I’m a GAer and NS Roleplayer from the United Kingdom.
My pronouns are he/him.
Any posts that I make as GenSec will be clearly marked as such and OOC. Conversely, my IC ambassador in the General Assembly is Ambassador Fortier. I’m always happy to discuss ideas about proposals, particularly if grammar or wording are in issue. I am also Executive Deputy Minister for the WA Ministry of TNP.
Kenmoria is an illiberal yet democratic nation pursuing the goals of communism in a semi-effective fashion. It has a very broad diplomatic presence despite being economically developing, mainly to seek help in recovering from the effect of a recent civil war. Read the factbook here for more information; perhaps, I will eventually finish it.

What is the official language of your nation?
Afrikaans is the main language of the nation, though a fair amount speak English

Do you're people speak multiple languages?
Yes, bilingualism is required for all Afrikaaners in both Afrikaans and English

Is there an indigenous language?
Dozens of inherited nations are integrated into the Ryk territories, and, while most of their speakers are either genocided or residing in the Zulu resistance, some of the white settlers continue to use it for many purposes, especially in the military for code. To name a few languages, most of the best spoken ones are Zulu, Xhosa, Swahili, Namibian German, Sotho, Tonga, Shona, Equestro-English Creole and Portuguese.

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?

English: Floccinaucinihilipilification.
Afrikaans: Spookasem (meaning 'cotton candy')

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language
They're both quite hard to learn, English especially due to its complex grammar rules.

Year: 2076

After a brief 'racial summit' on the current situation, for the first time in the Ryk's history, the ponies have ceased being declared as 'onwaardige', and have now been re-assorted to 'undecided inferiors'. Around 200,00 of the remaining ponies have been released. 50,000 of the attempted to defect out of the Ryk, and were all either arrested or killed by riot police with mustard gas and swords.

Is there an indigenous language?

- Yes, Mimeryan and Saori were the native's languages before Danish conquest

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?

What is the official langauge of your nation?

-Russian

Do your people speak multiple languages?

-Depends on the republic. Common ones are Russian, Ukrainian and Kazakh.

Is there an indigenous language?

-All the aforementioned ones, with some minority languages like Polish in the Ukrainian republic's western areas.

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?

-Привет! = Hello, for a common one. Theoretically, it is possible to create Russian words of unlimited length. One of the longest originally-Russian words is превысокомногорассмотрительствующий (over-the-counter) which contains 35 letters, in its dative singular form превысокомногорассмотрительствующему (with 36 letters), which can be an example of excessively official vocabulary of the 19th century.

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?

-Really depends on where you start. Cyrillic languages can be harder for those used to ones like English while easier for those speaking languages with similar roots.

Official languages:
English, Spanish; government documents handled in English

Languages spoken:
The majority are English/Spanish bilingual, with Spanish used mainly in East Goverwal and English elsewhere. In Bechaka Wisiti Mesebisebi Yijemirali, many languages are spoken due to it holding a school (which serves as a comprehensive school in that state, a grammar school in the rest of Greater Goverwal, and a private school internationally. These include the OLs, German, French, Arabic, Russian, Mandarin, Persian, Japanese, Turkish, Latin, Greek (modern and ancient), Portuguese, Dutch, Italian, Romanian, Serbian, Czech, Slovenian, Hindi, Bengali, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Hungarian and Hebrew. The indigenous language is also taught, but is relatively unpopular and seldom used.

Indigenous languages:
Bechaka Wisiti Mesebisebi Yijemirali has one, which I believe is based on Amharic, among other African languages, since the state was originally formed by a variety of African migrants.

Coolest word:
zigzaguearíamos - we could zigzag, Spanish

Difficulty to learn:
English - v. hard; Spanish - v. easy.

For you all! :D

What is the official language of your nation?
- Valkyrie Sprak is the primary one.

Does your people speak multiple languages?
- Yep!

Is there an indigenous language?
- Yeah, and 50,000+ of them. Basically every single language on Earth.

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?
þ - Just the way it rolls your tongue, like Anglo-Saxon English.

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?
Very, very difficult. Given how Valkyrie Sprak can have 10+ sentences for something as simple as "Hello there! My name is Valentijn. And you would be?" Each word piece can be translated to many, many langs.

What is the official langauge of your nation?

-There is no official language, although Scots Gaelic is the most commonly spoken language.

Do your people speak multiple languages?

-There are many languages spoken, namely Scots Gaelic, Irish, Breton, Manx, Welsh, and Cornish.

Is there an indigenous language?

-Any of the Celtic languages, stemming from both the Brythonic and Goidelic branches of the original Insular Celtic language. All of these endemic languages are extinct.

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?

-Our favourite saying is 'Buaidh no Bàs' which means 'victory or death' in Gaelic. Incidentally, it is also the slogan of Clan MacNeil of Barra.

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?

-Gaelic is a tough language for English/Romance language speakers to pick up because of the peculiar spellings of the words and the unconventional pronunciations. The same goes for the rest of the Celtic languages. Nonetheless, once you get the hang of it Gaelic is one of the most musical tongues on earth.

What is the official langauge of your nation?
The official state languages of Hokkaido Sakhalin are Russian and Japanese. Official minority languages are Ainu and Korean.

Do your people speak multiple languages?
About 30-35% of the Japanese speaking population can speak Russian, while 28% of the Russian speaking population speaks Japanese. Estimates for Japanese-Korean speakers, Russian-Korean, Russian-Ainu and Russian-Japanese speakers is unknown. Pupils are taught Russian/Japanese in schools from 1st Class to 11th Class. Additionally, 34% of the total population can speak basic English.

Is there an indigenous language?
It is generally regarded that Ainu is the traditional language of what is now Hokkaido-Sakhalin, as it encompasses much of their homeland. Ainu nearly died out in the 1970s, with an just 200 native speakers in 1975. However, after a successful revitalisation program, the language began to be spoken by many more. Currently there is an estimated 3,000 speakers of Ainu, and the language is now classified as “endangered”, rather than “nearly-extinct”.

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?
Not applicable, multiple languages spoken.

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?
Both Russian and Japanese are considered some of the hardest languages to learn in the world, so it is advisable non-speakers have a translator close at hand.

What is the official language of your nation?

English is the official national language in which government business is conducted, while the Acadian and Quebecois territories have French as an additional official language.

Do your people speak multiple languages?

Many, but not all, do.

Is there an indigenous language?

Several, but all are dead languages.

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?
Parfait sounds quite nice, in both languages.

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?

If you already know a language in the same linguistic group, Germanic for English and Romance for French, not too difficult. If you don't know a language in either group, French is likely somewhat difficult and English is quite difficult. Additionally, knowing French helps with learning English, due to the influence of French on the English language. The opposite is also true to a lesser degree. Linguistic drift also means that even those who speak the French or English of another country will need to learn at least a few words here.

What is the official langauge of your nation?

Vataan.

Do your people speak multiple languages?

Yes. My nation is located in the Caucasus, and that region is filled with lots of different languages. The three biggest languages after Vataan are Russian, Ukrainian and Armenian.

Is there an indigenous language?

Well, it's the Caucasus...

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?

It probably has to be "hæpÿrigæqiłȹëcȯb́". It means "monarchist".

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?

Vataan is just an absolute catastrophe. It has three different writing systems, a cosmic amount of phonemes and the Latin Vataan script has lots of diacritics to represent all those different phonemes (some of them are really hard to pronounce as well). Just look at the first verse of the National Anthem:
Image
It also has really advanced grammar. One example is the fact that it has 5 noun genders, 5 noun cases, masculine and feminine pronouns etc.

More info on the Vataan language is here: https://www.nationstates.net/nation=vat ... /id=974875

Seriously, why did I make this language so god damn advanced?

What is the official language of your nation?

English, Turkish, Anollasian

Do your people speak multiple languages?

Since we have multiple official languages, most people speak more than one language. In addition, people are encouraged to learn foreign languages too, like French and Spanish. We also have many immigrants from different backgrounds, who may speak different languages.

Is there an indigenous language?

Anollasian is native to our country but its origins lie in English and Turkish.

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?

English: Serendipity
Turkish: Lütfen - 'please'
Anollasian: Sünsy - 'fancy'

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?

If you know Germanic languages, English would be easier. If you know Turkic languages, Turkish may be easier, but different for an English speaker because the language is agglutinative, adding on suffixes and words, and the grammar can be backwards. If you don't know Turkish or English, Anollasian would be hard.

What is the official langauge of your nation?
English and Swedish

Do your people speak multiple languages?
English is more widely spoken, but students are taught Swedish in school (or English, depending on their native tongue). Most forget a lot of the Swedish they learned by the time they reach the age of majority, 20.

Is there an indigenous language?
Toinan is the only native language, but the government refuses to acknowledge this. Many businesses and services unofficially offer a Toinan interpreter, and almost always have one on staff.

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?
Swedish: Mars - March (the month, pronounced Marsh)
English: There is no official record, but His Majesty likes the word Stupified.

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?
It generally depends on the students' native tongue. Students who speak Swedish learn English, those who speak English learn Swedish and vice versa. Some find it difficult, others find it easy - it is not generally accepted as either hard or easy to learn either language.

What is the official langauge of your nation?

We have three, English, Dutch, and Maori.
Do your people speak multiple languages?

Yes. Most people are bilingual.

Is there an indigenous language?

There are many, as the many islands that make up our nation have incredible native linguistic and cultural diversity. Indigenous languages include Tikopia, Anuta, Fatutaka, Sikaiana, Luaniua. After the arrival of the Maori in the mid-1400s, the Maori language became the de facto lingua franca for native people, and because of the Maori language, and later Dutch and English, several native languages went extinct and were replaced by foreign languages.

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?

That's hard to say really, as that sort of thing is subjective.

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?

For English speakers, Dutch is quite easy to learn. Maori can be more difficult, and when it comes to indigenous languages they vary in difficulty.

What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?

How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?

- Russian is a somewhat hard to learn language for english first language speakers, as the grammar is different and it is a Slavic language.

What is the official langauge of your nation?
The Kingdom has two official languages — Modern Hylian (Image) and Traditional Hylian (Image). Despite the nomenclature, the two languages are not closely related or even affiliated with one another outside of their official status.
    • Modern Hylian is the most widely spoken native language (approx. 66.2%) in Hyrule. It is named as such because, despite being the most widely spoken and de facto national language, it is of foreign source, introduced to the court by invaders from the West. It is the most commonly used language in business and politics.
    • Traditional Hylian is the second most widely spoken native language (approx. 12.3%), and is named accordingly as it was the most common language and the courtly speech prior to the encroachment of Modern Hylian. It still holds a place of special cultural reverence, and is used in religious and ceremonial contexts.
Do your people speak multiple languages?
Several minority languages are recognised as regional and protected languages within the Kingdom. Multilingualism isn't just common — it's expected from a young age.
Is there an indigenous language?
Nearly all languages spoken here outside of Modern Hylian could be considered "indigenous" to the area.
What is the coolest sounding word or sound from your language?
Subjective; depends on the language in question and the person asked.
How hard would it be to learn your nation's language?
Both Modern and Traditiional Hylian are considered relatively difficult languages to master.

The Midandian word for "serendipity".

It is actually very hard to learn Midandian, and even harder to learn Traditional Midandian.
I used to be very active.
Now I grovel all day about how inactive I am.
