San Francisco mass exodus

Postby Kramanica » Wed Feb 14, 2018 11:42 am

Dunno how to make this fucking link work.
The number of people packing up and moving out of the Bay Area just hit its highest level in more than a decade.

Carole Dabak spent 40 years living in San Jose and now she’s part of the mass exodus that is showing no signs of slowing down.

“I loved it here when I first got here. I really loved it here. But it’s just not the same,” Dabak said.

Of course people come and go from the Bay Area all the time, but for the first time in a long time, more people are leaving the Bay Area than are coming in. And the number one place in the country for out-migration is now, right here.

Russell Hancock with Joint Venture Silicon Valley said, “Silicon Valley has been this place that is growing. And it was mostly growing because…people relocating here and relocating from other parts of the world. That’s changing.”

Joint Venture Silicon Valley’s own study of the out-migration says workers are moving to Sacramento, Austin, and Portland due to a number of factors. But topping the list is the high cost of housing.

“You can’t even contemplate getting into the housing market here,” Hancock said. “And I don’t mean just service workers, I mean highly skilled professionals. The tech elite are having a hard time affording reasonable housing in Silicon Valley. So this is difficult, this makes it very difficult for employers trying to recruit.”

Operators of a San Jose U-Haul business say one of their biggest problems is getting its rental moving vans back because so many are on a one-way ticket out of town.

Dabak cites crowding, crime and politics as the reasons for her own exodus.

“We don’t like it here anymore. You know, we don’t like this sanctuary state status and just the politics here,” she said.

She plans to sell her home for about $1 million, buy a much larger place near Nashville for less than half that and retire closer to family and friends.

Nationwide, the cities with the highest inflows, according to Redfin are Phoenix, Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Nashville.

So it seems San Francisco, one of the most populous cities in America, is experiencing a mass exodus of people leaving the city and moving elsewhere. Chiefly among the reason for this, as the article states, are crime, high cost of living and overcrowding. I see this as an inevitable result of the city and the state's policies regarding both taxes and immigration. California as a state is no stranger to having large numbers of people leave. People have already been leaving California in large numbers. San Francisco in particular just seems to be taking it particularly hard.

Thoughts?

From what I hear, living in San Francisco just costs way too much for basically anyone who's not in the top 2% earners of the US.

This problem could be solved so simply. Rent control or rent stabilization for everyone and stop building luxary housing for rich people. There problem solved but politicians have to make it so complicated.

There are some problems with having rent control as policy. In locations where rent control has been implemented, owners of rent controlled properties tend to not spend money maintaining it, because the cost of upgrades might exceed the amount that can be legally gotten from rent. It often contracts the supply of housing instead of expanding it.

Or perhaps they just don't want to spend the money so when that person moves out they can renovate and charge 5000 dollars a month.

Yeah we should have policy like Uzbekistan where you need permission from the government to move to another city.

The reason there is a housing shortage is building luxary housing for rich people. If you stopped building it there would not be a shortage. This isn't rocket science.

Ok, why the hate for California again?

Ever since the election California has been getting hate on.

Kinda unfair really.

Anyway, housing market is too expensive and San Fran is losing people.

With all the selling, prices will fall and people will move back.

They didn't vote for Trump so therefore they are bad people to some. They could do the solution I gave in San Francisco which is Rent control or rent stabilization for everyone and stop building luxary housing for rich people. and the housing problem would be solved easily. Politicians always have to make things so complicated

If housing prices in San Francisco are soaring sky high, it is because so many people want to move there, but with a limited supply of real estate, only the highest bidders are going to make it in, and this repeats in a positive feedback loop.

If there is a desire to lower rents, I'd suggest that San Francisco's government is pretty much going to need to build more housing, maybe apartments that can fit in a lot of people. I'm not quite certain if keeping those places rent controlled would put any downward price pressure on the rest of San Francisco's housing market. The danger is that any rent controlled places are gradually going to deteriorate if there isn't incentive for maintenance if the rent is kept too far below market rates.

I certainly can't condone implementing rent control for the entire city if it creates new problems. The best way to reduce the price is to substantially increase the supply more so than the amount of demand there is. Or to find ways to reduce demand for housing.

If you stopped building luxary housing for rich people with insane rents and built only affordable housing the average person could afford there wouldn't be a shortage.

Why would there be no incentive for maintenance if the rent is below the market rates? The market rate is set by building owners on a large scale. They charge ridiculous rent because all they care about is profit so why not make housing something only the rich can afford?

Hating California is a past time with some people. Some just don’t like sunshine and beaches or something and some are so ideologically bent that if they accept a functional California it destroys their world view. So there’s some cat right now hitting “quote” so he can do those error arrows on “functional California”. It’s cool we’ll just be over here being awesome and the rest will catch up to us eventually.
